Hes extremely hard. I read the book, studied, crammed, worked like crazy to get iClicker questions right, and went crazy to do good in lab. Still ended up getting a low C or below on EVERY single test of his. BUT with the lab points and iClicker question points, plus he drops your lowest test score, you can manage a B.
If you want to pass Bio 189- enroll for a different proffessor. This man's test will make you want to protest! ...think about your future people! DO NOT take his class. Please and thank you ^_^ (fair warning)
DO NOT
He is a good teacher. Goes over all the material very well and tells you what to expect on the exams. His exams are hard but its nothing you shouldn't be prepared for.
How to ruin your GPA...take this prof! There's a combo of iclicker points (attend class 4 these), BioL grade, & three tests in Bio. There are four tests, but he drops the lowest score. With all the poor grades he should drop the lowest score! Tips: STUDY, don't stress out if you miss the tricky/nonsense ?'s, & drop right away if struggling.
Hard course. Involves alot alot of studying, reading all the chapters, taking detailed notes, and meeting up with a study group.
Difficult.
Regner's 189 class is difficult. If you go to class, take good notes, and study more than a day prior to the exam you'll get a good grade. Make use of his office hours. He really prepares you for upper division coursework, perfect for pre-professional kids. He has four tests, first is okay, second is difficult, third is easy and so is the fourth.
I typically do really well in science classes and I get As and Bs. I received a B+ in Anatomy & Physiology. But right now I don't even know if I am going to pass this class because I never understand what he tests on. He is a horrid teacher who has a bad attitude towards students. If you can avoid taking him do! If you can't then STUDY STUDY STUDY!
If you feel like taking biology 189 twice, then go ahead and take this professor the first time. His tests are EXTREMELY difficult and it seems as if most of the information he stresses in class is not even on the tests. Do not take this prof!
I will never forget the name Regner! Attendance is mandatory because of Iclicker questions. He is so monotone that almost a third of the class starts dozing off. He has an audio recording of his lectures on webcampus, still monotone. Tests are difficult, be ready to re-take class.
He also talks to you like you're an idiot when you asks questions. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
I am a pre-med student who got an A in this class (the very small percentage) because I read the text before lectures, take notes on everything he says, read everyday, reread the notes, & listen to recordings.Although his tests were very hard,I believe this class is excellent foundation for med school. THIS CLASS IS NOT FOR SLACKERS!!!
I wonder how a professor with a Phd. cannot answer ANY questions even when asked with the most simplicity. His lectures are pictorial and dry at best. The guy can't teach. Take another professor
Lectures are clear. iClicker points eventually become extra credit. If you read the book, take notes during lecture, and review the night before an exam, there's no reason you shouldn't get an A. Definitely not as hard as people made him out to be. I'd recommend him (coming from a non-biology major).
He is extremely rude, his lectures have little to do with the tests and he loves nothing more than making the class as difficult as possible. I think he feels more important when most of the class gets a C or lower. I can't stand this prof! Avoid him at all costs!
Poor instructor. I highly recommend that you take another professor for this class. His exams are extremely difficult and he truly believes that you should devote 40 hours per week for his class. DO NOT take his class.
hes not a bad guy and he is helpful when you talk to him. I would defiantly take him in a smaller class but the giant lecture made it more difficult. The test were extremely difficult and there wasn't a lot of guidance but i would take him for a higher level class defiantly.
This class was instructed beyond a 100 level class. Do NOT take this class. Dr Regner is the worst instructor ever.
Your grade will reflect the amount of time and studying you put into this class. Difficult but he gives plenty of chances to get your grade up(lab, extra iclicker)and puts up powerpoints and past tests online. Many people complain about this class and those are most likely the people who don't go. Tests from material on slides and the book directly
GREAT PROFESSOR. Very clear about topics. Never opened book, everything can be found on WebCampus. iClicker questions are easy points. Exams are difficult, but if you study, you'll be fine.
Professor Regner was very very difficult. His exams were way too detail oriented and he expects you to devote way more time to his class than you have. I would definitely recommend trying to take this course with a different instructor.
Regner is funny, and pretty chill. Do not skip class! He doesn't take attendance but the iclicker points add up fast and you WILL need them because the exams are brutal. Do good on your lab too, it will make up for some of your grade.
Not as bad as people describe him to be. He really isn't very helpful though. Majority of his test come straight from his powerpoints. Book wasn't used much. Attendance is a must. Just study the powerpoints over and over [literally], read the chapter before coming to class and you will do fine.
He is arrogant, self-centered and very rude. I dropped the class because of his lack of effective teaching methods. I recommend taking this class from ANY other instructor on campus. He makes the material much more difficult than it has to be based solely on his inferiority complex to his collegues who are not "an assitant professor in residence".
Professor Regner is an excellent teacher. I don't understand why everyone keeps bashing on him. His lectures are really interesting, and he's really passionate about microbiology. If you go to class, take notes, there's no doubt you'll get an A or B. It's really not that hard, just take notes and pay attention.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He is the worst biology teacher I have ever had. He makes everything more complicated than it needs to be. He is really smart, but does not know how to teach. I have always liked biology, but taking his class he has made me reconsider changing my major a few times.
Likes to move around a lot. Words his test weird.
GOOD: he emphasizes the important concepts to understand for ALL Biol courses. His tests are hard but prepare you for the MCAT. BAD:test questions are cryptic. He is demeaning & condescending,RARELY answers a question. He is a bitter individual who is mad at the world. Shows no interest in students needs & cant relate material. Rock the lab & study
He is very difficult. The tests seem like they can have two answers when there is only one. I studied 10 hours for one of his tests and basically failed it, and i attended class regularly. However, i think he would be good to prepare students for further science courses or medical school.
OKay soi worked my but off in this class and got a B. he is a really confusing guy. make sure you pay attention to PICTIRES he loves putting questions on the test about pictures. pay attention to when he repeats something or circles something more then once. his tests are pretty hard. just expect to study going into this class it is very challengin
Exams are extremely difficult, very precise questioning and answers. Be prepared to study for long hours (5 hours per day if you can). Overall Professor is clear, and somewhat interesting. Not recommended if you have poor study habits or if you lack science background.
Avoid, avoid, avoid!! This man is evil! He makes his test soo difficult..he puts more than one feasible answer to his questions and he tests you on things he doesn't cover in class. The class AVERAGE for all 3 tests is a failing grade...and he PROMISES he will not be curving the class. Just avoid this guy!!!Worst prof EVER.
This class is difficult. You CANNOT slack off. Read his slides and make sure you understand them. Don't memorize, UNDERSTAND. He's a good professor, but kind of scary to approach in my opinion. He made the class interesting because you can tell he actually likes Microbiology.
I don't see what all the fuss is about. He's a great professor. I get A's on my exams. Just read the book and listen to what he says in lecture. He reapeats himself and circles things on the notes so PAY ATTENTION TO THAT. This class is very passable. He always offers his office hours if you need any help. I think he's a good professor.
The class isn't that hard. But you need to UNDERSTAND the concepts, not merely memorize them. Read the slides, chapters and the links he posts on webcampus. Studying part of college, you should probably get used to it.
In my honest opinion, this class requires much studying and you must understand the slides. The reason why many people fail is because the only memorize concepts. He gives much info. in the slides but only asks us 50 questions. I got a B on my past two exams and I studied for 5 days before the exams. You can pass as long as u get help.
His tests are killers. The questions are seriously out of left field and don't seem to match up with his lectures. I listen and follow along with lecture diligently with the notes from webcampus. I write down questions and concepts he circles and says THIS WILL FOR SURE BE ON THE TEST, and then it isn't! Go for the other Bio 189 prof for sure.
Horrible teacher. Notes have no relevance to the tests. Teaches all of the small details, but tests on everything else. Last test average was a D with almost 200 students, ITS NOT US! ITS HIM!!!!
He is the WORST teacher I have ever had. I was a solid A student until this class messed everything up for me sadly. He is very evil & it seems he wants to see his students fail & his tests are awful! They don't match up with the lectures at all. I used to absolutely love bio. until him & this class. If you can, definitely take the other professor!
He's a good teacher and seems nice. The problem is his tests. Where does he get SOME of his test questions from? He's too lazy to make test questions that relate to the assigned book or his own slides and lectures instead. I think he finds random questions on the internet.
AVIOD AVOID AVOID. I saw the ratings before the semester started and thought I could handle it...even though I ended with a C (because of the lab and iclicker points), definitely not what I wanted. Material isn't hard to understand, it's his tests. So confusing. Just take anyone else but him and I promise you'll do better than I did.
If taking this course, definitely need to STUDY & put in a lot of effort. Teacher is alright, but taking someone else if possible would be a good idea.
I can't believe all of these horrible reviews. His lectures are incredibly clear and easy to follow. He breaks down difficult biological processes into easy to follow steps. He provides recordings of his lectures/slides. His tests are fair and require thought-typical of a science course, right? Very nice, smart guy. I would take any class of his.
This is by no means an easy class. I was constantly studying and preparing, especially after I saw his horrible reviews. Eventually, I ended up with an A. Don't slack off! You cannot just memorize the concepts he presents to you - you have to understand. Listen to the recordings of the lectures - they are very helpful.
I'll admit that this class isn't the easiest, but it really is not as bad as everyone else makes it seem. And no, I'm not a science obsessed nerd or anything like that. If you take this course, you just have to study more than usual. I got C's and B's on his exams and still passed the class with an A. He even drops the lowest exam score.
I agree with most of the other reviews. I took tons of Biology in high school, and I still ended up with only a B. I suggest going to class, because iclicker points are easy to get. Make sure to get at least a C on your tests, because in the end it averages out to a B. MAKE SURE TO DO VERY WELL IN LAB! It makes a big difference in your grade.
He is very big on reading the text. His tests are hard being that he words everything in a complex way. MUST read carefully questions on his ewxams. Lab grade will boost you up one whole letter grade too. Good instructor!
He is a really difficult prof. Be prepared to study! He posts the notes online, so it is best to print them out and bring them to lecture. It is possible to get an A but very challenging.
Dr. Regner really does care about his students. He does an excellent job teaching and you learn a lot in the class. The tests are what get you. They are ridiculously hard and you basically have to memorize everything, like small details, but he tells you some of the things to memorize. Go to Lab! That will save your grade!
never take biology with him. DONT DO IT!!!!! He never answers questions and he always make smart remarks to students that ask them
Dr. Regner is passionate about Biology and you can tell. He is an extremely interesting person with a lot of knowledge. Hard hard tests! You MUST STUDY to do well in his class. He is a funny guy and nice. I rated him as hot...he's not sexy but he emanates goodness and intelligence which I find pretty hot!
OK. Biology 189 is basically a class that sorts out the people who think they want a career in medical, biology, etc... and those who actually have what it takes in those fields. Prof. Regner is smart, but not very approachable. He gives you every resource to pass, you have to REALLY apply yourself and put in that time though. He test tough!!!!
Difficult for this level of bio. Regner's personality makes him hard to approach. Use every aid possible to study (e.g. online resources), as his tests are complex and require deep understanding. Do well in lab to boost your grade. +1 point for him offering his recorded lectures online.
one of the BEST prof. i have had, he is very knowledgable of the subject, trully cares about his students and their success(not all students percieve it that way) but he tapes his lectures-highlights important concepts that will be on exams;makes a point to provide additional resources; he is an awesome professor;study !!&review recordings!!!
Coming from a non-biology major, it's not that hard to get a B, but it's really hard to get an A. I don't think he curves, but lab boosts your grade a lot.
Kurt Regner is an enjoyable professor, he knows how to explain the lecture very well and throws in some funny comments to keep students awake. If you want a good grade, you must read the book and it's imperative to invest much time into studying and listening to the digital recordings. He can be very tricky in tests, but he still is a great teacher
I like Regner, he was one of the best BIO professors I've ever had, funny, knows his stuff, easy class if you actually study.
The first exam is simple you just need to study. There's no hope for the second exam so don't even bother. The third should be studied for at least two weeks prior. You need to get a good understanding of the material. The fourth is just memorization of readings. He's not that bad but he's certainly not the best teacher. Just try to not to get him.
Class isn't as hard as people make it seem. Got a B on the 1st exam, failed the 2nd, got a B on the 3rd, and didnt have to take the 4th cause he drops the lowest grade and I was going to have a B in the class overall whether i took it or not. 3 suggestions: GO to lecture, pay attention, and STUDY HARD. Use the web links he posts. They helped some.
To me this class was hard. I suggest either switching to a different teacher, or just sucking it up! READ THE TEXTBOOK. His notes do not really help much.. also, get a study group! that will help so much.
I did not like his teaching style. The textbook will save your life in this class, but I really just suggest switching teachers. It's obvious that Regner knows what he's talking about, but he just doesn't do that good a job of teaching it.
The class is hard if you don't put in the effort, I know because I failed this class before at CSN then took it again with Regner and got a "B". You actually have to study, don't blame the professor for your laziness. He was an overall good prof, he even tells you what kind of stuff he'll ask on the test.
He doesn't particularly care about his students and gives difficult tests but he is a good professor. He does cover a lot and doesn't really emphasize what's important.
SO i know every has complained how regner but really hes a good teacher and knows hes stuff. You really need to read the textbook and understand not just memorize. were in college now grow up its going to be difficult. overall hes an okay teacher. i mean test are hard but thats why you have to do your studying and do your part. suck it up ppl.
I am taking 251 w/Reg right now and my midterm grade is a B. I bust my chops in his class and I just can't overcome his midterms. I read and study and attend lectures and I know the material. His tests are just WAY TOO DETAILED. I will never take another Bio class with him again. Material is too difficult to have him play games with trick questions
I honestly would not suggest taking Regner. He doesn't answer questions during exams because "the lecture hall is too big" and rarely clarifies what is important for the test and what isn't important. So basically, study the whole book and hope you remember the 5 words he uses in the test to answer the questions.
This class is HARD. I recommend reading the chapters multiple times, joining a study group, and attending lectures. He is helpful in some ways and not in others. I understand why he's tough but the last test nothing that he said was going to be on the test, actually was even on there. Just try hard!!
It's a tough class, but very doable. He is very clear and knows what he is tanking about. He also drops the lowest exam grade. Just make sure to study a lot and read the text book. He also post PPTs online. Just study and you should be able to get a B
Compared to other 100 level classes this is not easy, but doable. YOU have to apply yourself and use the resources availbile, because he himself is no help. Class is understandable but his tests are tricky, and require a thorough understanding of the topic.Make use of the mp3's he puts up they are very helpful
I've heard many horror stories about Dr. Regner, but once I got into his class I realized that he wasn't all that bad! Once you get over his sarcasm, you realize how interesting he is with his teaching methods. I really loved taking micro with him and I found the material not so difficult. Don't be afraid to take him!
not easy. pay attention in class and take good notes. listen to lecture recordings and review notes. got a B. basically no curve. dont rely on that mess. If you pay really close attenttion to everything he says maybe A.
Before I took this class I heard everyone saying he was such a bad professor and his test are impossible. Well that is not the case he is one of the best professors I have had, he explains everything very clear and really enjoys teaching. If you read the power points and pay attention in class you should have absolutely no problems with the class.
I had heard many horror stories as well, but I am so glad I took his class! I can see what people mean about him being sarcastic, but if you pay attention and put in the effort, he does his job and really helps you learn. Loved this class!!!
I took the class twice and the second time around I learned a lot. That said Regner's tests are near impossible. I studied really hard for all of his tests and still barely passed his class. If you have a job, I would avoid him because his class alone will become your full time job.
I took the class twice and the second time around I learned a lot. That said, Regner's tests are near impossible. I studied extremely hard for all of them and still barely passed the class. If you have a job, I would avoid him because his class alone will become your job.
Regner is a great professor. He is also extremely helpful especially if you go to his office hours. His tests were kind of hard but if you actually study you will pass.
Horrible teacher. I do not recommend him. He will fail you with very hard test questions. You will study all 6 chapters and questions on a test will be some 1-2 insignificant sentences from book or Internet. You will get very bad grade and will be forced to retake this class. Get somebody else
Bio is not easy,If you don't study you will not pass,However i hate studying, only ever cram for 2-3 hours right before the test, got all A's on his exams. for reference i usually average a b- for bio exams.he even drops 1 of the exams, and gives an extra credit assignment. he wants you to learn, not just to show off his phd. took w P. Amy got a D
Terrible. Notes are unorganized and unclear. He is not fully involved and is not understanding. The notes are broad and not always specific to the tests. Avoid this professor.
very good at what he does. Considered hard because he actually requires his students to learn the concepts behind the terms rather than giving away the answers in a study guide. You will be prepared for the next years of biology if you take his class. READ THE BOOK AND YOU WILL PASS. It's that simple with him.
AVOID this professor. Not worth it. Take someone else. You will be worked up, stressed out and feel sorry if you take this class. Very misleading. Attending his lectures is not worth it, you can attend every lecture and do every homework, you get no credit for that. Feel very discouraged. All my hard work feels like it wasn't rewarding.
Don't take this professor. I was very interested in subject before I took this class. His is sarcastic- which is unnecessary - I don't want my teacher to be sarcastic, I want him to be helpful. I lost all interest I had.....terrible teacher. Out of 300 2-3 get good grades and they are the ones to post good rating, don't be fooled. 297- C grade
I took Bio 189 with this professor, and received a C. What I lacked was proper study skills. Which is about 90% of the students taking that class. Microbiology was awesome to take with this professor! Get a recorder for both classes! Use your smart phone! Read your text! Get a study group! If your confused on a topic go to office hours and class!
i never rate my professors BUT the world should know how HORRIBLE he is. He's really useless and his exams are the HARDEST because no one knows where he gets them from. seriously wither i study or not for his exam, there is no difference!he's the only professor that teaches bio 251 so i'm stuck with him!GOOD LUCK everyone.
I just took the Summer 14' class and the actual lecture was not hard at all. With just reading the power points and watching the videos I could've gotten an A in the class. One thing I don't like about the class is the lab instructor. She's very picky when it comes to grading the term paper and I have never in my life received a 50% in an essay.
It's a lot of info to absorb in a short amount of time, but the exam questions were never "tricky". They were all straight forward from his slides. Lab was actually tougher because the TA was a little strict on the lab reports, but the quizzes were super easy. The final exam for lab was rough! Study for that! I would definitely take Regner again.
I suggest recording all lectures and taking notes. ALL of his exams come from his powerpoints and lectures. Also, he allows for extra credit at the end to watch movies and answer questions on them for the final. He takes the best 4/5 Exam scores! Hes clear and helpful! Class ended up being very interesting.. Hes a diff teacher in 251 then 189.
His tests are very confusing. You have to be able to apply the concepts to life. He doesn't curve but does drop the lowest test score. You have to study non stop to pass his class.
He is a tough teacher, but really expects you to understand the material. There are plenty of options for extra help. Definitely attend the SI and drop by library tutoring with Bahare! It was a huge help! Good luck and make sure to read.
Dr. Regner is very passionate about Biology and really wants his students to do well. He is very clear with his lectures and what he wants you to understand. He tries everything in his power to help his students. You will have to study for his class but to get an A you must know the material and expect to study.
This class is very hard for a Bio 196 class. Tests are the only basis of your grade. Without my lab class I would have a C in this class. The exams are very tricky. I guess you really have to understand your stuff to do well. good luck if you do take him.
I'm taking BIOL 189 and I'm doing well. He's very straight forward and many people respect him. I learned a lot in this class but the tests are in depth because he wants you to apply and understand and to be honest it's fun to get it. I recommend this class for learning, but if GPA is important to you then you shouldn't take him
If you want an easy A, seek elsewhere. You basically get what you put into it. He provides plenty of resources that you could use for tutoring. His lectures are really clear and he tells you exactly what is going to be on the test as he goes through the powerpoint. Test are very specific so STUDY! GO TO SI and ask questions. Good luck!
I took Regner for Spring 2014 and I did get an A in his class. The key to succeeding in his class is to read the chapter before lecture, print his powerpoints to take notes on because you will never be able to keep up with taking notes & study! He is fair & his exams are multiple choice. He even drops your lowest exam grade & there if you need help
His lectures are just descriptions of the online notes w side comments that do not apply to the test. The online quizzes are more helpful than the actual lecture.
Kurt regner is sarcastic to say the least. He was kind of mean when you would ask for help and make you feel stupid. You definitely should use a study group or else you won't pass. Tests are TERRIBLE. He even said that he just comes up with random questions off the top of his head the night before. Really gotta work for your grade.
Professor Regner was a good teacher, the way he writes his tests forces you to study and actually understand the concept. It's very interesting once you actually understand it but the hardest part is that there's no time because you have to balance out other classes too. He recommended us to take SI with Bahare and she was the best. Fun experience.
Regner is an interesting guy. He knows how to teach, so you have to be prepared to actually learn. His tests are difficult because he makes you read through the lines. I never skipped a class, because you just cannot afford to. If you read, pay attention and actually put effort into this class, you will pass. He is not going to gift wrap you an A.
It took me halfway through the semester to realize that the textbook rarely helps. His tests are based off his powerpoints, but he always uploads them a couple days before so you can take notes on them. Have a high grade in your lab because it really helps bring up your lecture grade
If you're lazy and looking for an easy A then you won't pass. Just study, do your work, you'll pass. He's not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. Do your work, you'll do great, and if you aren't willing to work for a grade then why are you even in college? I will take him again for Biol 251. If you're not a slacker then he should be no problem
I'm not sure why this guy has such a bad rep. I found his lectures to be interesting. You will have to work for your grade, but his exam questions are reflective of notes and textbook. I enjoyed his sarcastic sense of humor.
Regner is an okay professor. He isn't amazing, but not horrible as well. His lectures are kind of dry and he has a monotone voice so for some people (like me) it makes you kind of sleepy. You can go into his office hours or call his Skype for help. Sometimes he doesn't help at all and sometimes he doesn't even know the answer.
Worst professor I have ever had at UNLV. Does not care bout his students, and if they learn anything or not.
He thinks his exams are hard because he tests comprehension but that is not it at all. His exams are poorly written and some questions are subjective. I'm an A student and it's difficult to get an A in his class because he barely uses the textbook. It's completely reliant on what he thinks and his lectures, so there is no supplemental material.
Not my favorite professor. His powerpoints are a bit vague, and his handwriting was unclear, so it was hard to know what he was talking about at time. His lectures aren't very interesting so that didn't help with understanding either. Independent studying and reading is the best way to go. Tests were pretty difficult even with a cheat sheet.
Great Professor. Lectures are very well organized and explained. Tests are straight off of his power points. Iclicker questions during class give you exam questions. This isn't high school. If you study, you will get an A on his tests.
If you go to his lectures and study at least a week before each exam you'll do fine. He gives i-clicker questions that pertain to exams and even lets students know if a certain part of the lecture will be on the test. There is also SI which I recommend you do.
His exams are difficult, but everything on it is from his powerpoints.
Horrible teacher who is generally disinterested in teaching biol 189. His lack of interest in the subject made it difficult to stay away and made for sleep inducing lectures.
Dr. Regner is a hilarious man. Class is challenging, but what do you expect ? It's a college course. There are 3 exams. Lowest one is dropped. Come to class for iClicker points (trust me, they help you boost your grade). He also tells you. in class, what might possibly be on the exams. Not an easy class ... you really have to work to get an A.
Dr. Regner's class was pretty tough. Got 2 C's and 2 D's on his exams and got a C on the comprehensive final, but I still managed to get a B for the class. Read the powerpoints and come to class. Difficult A for sure.
I suggest to read the book or look over powerpoints before each class if you don't have any background in Biology or else you'll be pretty lost. It's handy to print his powerpoints, because there's no time to write everything down in lecture. You'll do well on tests if you attend class, and better if you read the book.
Hes an amazing teacher for Bio 251. Just need to put in the effort. Read the book and go to lecture and you will do fine
I could not stand this class. His powerpoints were extremely sloppy (unreadable text placed over pictures). Also, iclicker "test" questions were given, yet very few of the questions appeared on the test. Tests are difficult, I would read the book and powerpoints, but still perform poorly. Notecard given for exams. Ask lab or SI instructor for help
Professor overall is very knowledgable in course, which is reassuring. However, exams are very difficult, even if you read the lectures and the book and powerpoints are a bit on the messier side. Good luck getting an A.
He's a great lecturer, and even made me laugh a few times throughout the semester. Feel free to skip class if you're familiar with material being covered that day. Tests are hard but prepare you for the harder ones in upper division classes. He's clear about what will be on the exams, and also reuses some of the iClicker questions.
Professor Regner is very knowledgeable and great. However, his exams are extremely difficult bc you have to apply concepts, he will never ask definition type questions. Many intelligent ppl are discouraged because they are horrible test takers despite studying effectively. I'd learn much more if I wasn't always stressed out about his hard test ?'s.
Expect tests to be concept based. If you plan to do well you must study. Regner is willing to help if you go to his office hours, though he hates stupid questions. His lectures are helpful and hes pretty funny.
The worst Biol 196 teacher on campus. His lectures are nothing like his tests and even if you go to his office hours (like I did), he's snarky and unhelpful. His tests are concept based but nothing in his lectures is helpful for the test. I recommend going to SI sessions in hopes of passing.
Regner's tests are concept based, and the level of difficulty fluctuates from how he's feeling when he's writing the test. I went to his office hours once, and he was condescending and unhelpful. Read the book and go to SI sessions if you want to pass the class. Biology tutoring center is also a good resource.
Regner is definitely a tough professor! He doesn't like answering 'stupid' questions and has a very sarcastic sense of humor. Attendance is basically mandatory because i-clicker questions are done daily and count for a grade. His tests are OK but he does drop the lowest test, and if you get an A in the final, you get an A for the class.
His lectures are nothing that is expected in the exam, and he does't explain things clearly. I have heard the Si sessions are helpful, but have never been able to go. He goes through material very fast. He has no review guides for exam so you are never sure of what to study. Study the books and lecture notes like crazy for the exam
Regner is a very straight forward teacher. His powerpoint slides include everything you need to know for the exams. For the first exam I studied from the book and received a C however, for the 2nd and 3rd exams I studied the lectures and received Bs. His class is definitely manageable and really isn't that bad if you put in the work.
Biol 196 in general is a tough class. Professor Regner is a relatively good teacher, though. His lectures are helpful at clarifying the matieral, but I still reccommend reading the actual textbook if you want an A. There's three exams and a final; he drops the lowest exam score. I-clicker questions do count as a grade, but they're pretty easy.
Regner is a wonderful professor. His lectures are interesting and he is well informed about the topics he discusses. His exams are tough, however if you read the notes and listen during lectures you will get an A. Some iclicker questions do end up on the exams, and he gives hints as to what will be on the exam during the lecture.
Regner is very clear about the setup of his class. People struggle b/c its an intro bio class, so they don't realize how much they have to study. His tests are based off of ppts. If you study his lecture and go to SI when needed, you will do well on the test. I studied hard for all the tests on got A's. It's very fair, just study for the exams.
Don't waste your time reading the book. Focus on his lectures. Everything that you need to know is on there. Overall great lecturer and very fair class. Exams are not that hard if you study and understand what you're studying. Very doable A, plus you'll learn a lot since he is very knowledgeable about the subject.
Though he can be a little sassy and intimidating, he's s an exception teacher. His lectures are clear and his ppts are organized. He answers all questions. Sow up and do iclicker questions for a slight grade boost. He critiques the textbook a lot so I would rely more on lecture notes. He also reuses some iclicker questions on exams.
Without taking AP Biology, I was completely lost. My friends who took AP Biology were slightly less lost, yet still struggled. He does not answer any question asked in class, but rather dances around until he's talked for about a minute, or he will tell you to wait until you learn that concept in a later course. He's also a very rude person. Very.
Although his exams are difficult AND tricky, his lectures are incredibly thorough. If you utilize his lectures as review sessions and attend SI, you will have a higher chance of passing this class and perhaps even receive an "A". Some people do not suggest reading the book, but for me its easier to understand the bigger picture if you read the text
Regner is a tough professor. I struggled and got a C, D, ad F on the first three exams. Thankfully the lowest score is dropped. I ended up getting a B in the class. And if you get an A on the final, you get an A for the class. My best advice is attend class, go to the SI Sessions, read the book, do well in lab, and study a little bit everyday.
He's a great professor but his exams are hard. Memorizing the slide isn't enough and the notecard is mostly useless. Going to SI every week really helps clarify concepts.
Truth is, you won't pass this class if you are lazy about studying. If you are serious about your major, you will get an A. Recording lectures and having a good study group helped me a lot. It really comes down with how much effort that you put into this class. Do well for the lab REPORTS since they will help to study for the practical!!!
He's a good lecturer, but the exams are so detailed and nuanced that studying every bullet point for 25-30 hours a week wasn't enough to get past a B even for a straight-A student. Other A students had similar experiences here. Also, there are no curves or +/- grades. I only recommend this class with a very light semester course load.
Regner gives off a bit of the sarcastic arse vibe but he really does know what he is teaching about. Utilize lecture recordings and slides the book did not really help. The tests are specific so remember his exact wording. The final was ridiculous and not cumulative like mentioned in class. Make sure to do well in lab, it helps.
I'll be honest, this class wasn't the most exciting class I've taken, but Dr. Regner is great at teaching it. He truly cares about his students sucess and is a really nice guy. Plus, if you show up to class you get extra credit (Iclicker). Best part about this class? The discussion is a free 20% of your grade, and it helps solidify concepts.
I passed his class, but I did not find him to be approachable. Tests were in fact nuanced and not straightforward. He does not provide any kind of review session before exams, which would have been very helpful. Don't let this discourage you from trying though! Go to his office hours though, work hard, & you'll do fine.
Dr. Regner was very clear. His exams came straight from his ppts and his lectures. The book was only necessary if a topic was unclear. He drops and exam and allows a notecard on all of them. If you show up, take notes, and review the material about once a week, you'll do great on the tests. Definitely would take him again
None of his lectures were helpful. This is the type of class you want to take if you're the type that likes to read and soak everything you read into your head. Otherwise, do not take this class because you will truly regret it and wish to die. After taking this class, I lost all my interest in biology. I usually like biology but this class kills!
Doctor Regner introduces too many topics at once, tests on things he never covers and is terrible at answering questions. The general attitude of both him and his graduate students is that if you don't already understand the material he's introducing before he introduces it, then it's your fault. Memorize the book and all his outside resources.
Very nice teacher but at times confusing. Lectures are long and hard to understand. Tests are hard and determine your entire grade. Must study the notes and the textbook to pass.
Biology is usually one of the subjects I love, but I hated it this semester because of him. He isn't very clear when explaining lectures and expects you to know the material before going to class and makes you feel bad if you don't. Exams are extremely hard and he tests you on things he did not teach. Last test about 60% of his students got F's.
Wasn't very clear when teaching his lectures. Went on and on about material but then didn't test you on much of what he talked about in class. Tests were very hard. Most of the people in the class struggled to get at least a B, doubt many people ended up with an A. Definitely wouldn't take him again.
The class was very interesting, and even though the lectures are long, Dr. Regner will keep your attention. The only thing about him is that if you ask a question, you kind of feel like you're being an inconvenience to him. Definitely attend class and study hard. SI helps a few people, but I did not find it helpful myself, but at least try it.
This was easily the hardest class I've ever taken. Exams were difficult even though I studied for 10+ hours a week. Would not recommend.
Was a good class. Overall the material was not that hard but applying the concepts gave me some trouble. His exams are difficult but I recommend seeing your lab instructors or going to SI if you need to hammer in some concepts. Otherwise, I feel like there were just somethings that you couldn't anticipate being on the exam.
Regner is a very knowledgeable professor honestly wants all his students to do well. But unlike other professors, he wont just give you a good grade. He wants students to do well but also really understand the information, so his tests are fairly difficult. Difficult enough to have a rule that says if you ace his final, you get an A for the class
He was the worst teacher I had ever had! If I had a question, he would make me feel stupid for not knowing and doesn't care about his students. He makes you feel like the biggest idiot alive. Because of him, I am switching majors because he made me absolutely hate biology.
Dr. Regner was an amazing teacher. You can tell he was very passionate about what he taught about and tries to be humorous when he lectures. But his tests are hard but if you study and know the material you will be fine. PPT helps the most. But when you study hard and do well it feels awesome. He provides an SI that helps a ton. I loved his class.
Regner is a great professor and, although many times very sarcastic, he tries to help you the best he can and tries to provide as many opportunities as possible for you. Also, he drinks a lot of coconut juice I've noticed.
He's a cool guy, but definitely not for the easily offended or lazy. Worked hard to get my grade and that was kinda satisfying despite not getting the grade I wanted. He provides a lot of opportunities for you to get help, but he's a little curt in his emails. Exams were hard, made me question my existence.
Dr. Regner knows Biology, but struggles to teach biology. His slides for lecture seemed a bit thrown together and he often struggled to present the topics in his slides. When students had questions (which was often) he would almost always say that he doesn't understand the question and then just move on, leaving the student without an answer.
His test questions are not too tough, but each test had a few tricky questions that makes the difference between an A or B. Also there are short answer questions on each test and the final. Doing really well in discussion will save your grade! not many people got an A this semester with regner. I barely scraped by with an A, but i learned a lot.
Dr. Regner is a great lecturer. I suggest going to lab TA's or the SI instructor for help, because he can be condensing. If you want an A or a B you WILL have to work hard. Focus on his slides. GO TO SI. Study frequently&record the lectures His sildes and lectures have everything you need for exams. Study from the beginning it's possible to do well
Was holding an A all semester up until the final. His MC test can be tricky some of the questions may possibly have a few correct answers. The short response always brought my grade down. You never knew what it was and he always asks a very broad question and expects multiple points to be listed that expand your answer. Wasn't always available.
This class was my easy class and my easy A. I didn't study too much and the questions were almost entirely from the powerpoints or discussion manual. I did terrible on free response questions. You don't have to be a genius to do well, you just need good study skills. This class is easy if you know how to study. There are much harder classes (ochem)
Worst professor at UNLV. Genetics is supposed to be an interesting class but Regner makes you hate genetics. It was unnecessarily hard and I put work in for an A and got a B. Hardest I've ever worked for a B. He doesn't curve and does not care about his students. Don't take this teacher.
I took Bio 189 before this class to prepare and was told by many not to take Regner but he was the only open class. Do not take this class unless you are only taking say one other class and study a lot. His tests are extremely tough.
I loved this class! It was my favorite class last semester, despite how tough Regner's tests were. You REALLY have to put in the time and effort to earn an A because he doesn't curve despite low averages. Regner himself wasn't very approachable, but he made the lectures very interesting and entertaining with his sarcastic remarks.
People on here complain about the difficulty of Regner's tests. Not really accurate: I read the notes everyday, once or twice, never opened the textbook, and my lowest test grade was a 93. People always complained about the test questions being too tricky, with the truth being they probably just didn't study hard enough. All material was covered.
If you have a love for biology, you should do absolutely fine in this class. His lectures were extremely interesting and he repeats things often for you. He is also very welcoming of questions DURING CLASS (probably not the best office hour professor to visit). I learned lots. (He might throw extreme sass at you and some see that as intimidating.)
For those saying that people only do bad because they didn't study, check the class stats. The average on his second exam was a 54%, meanwhile the other 304 section average was around 80%. Did they really study that much harder than us? Perhaps they were just so much smarter than us? I doubt it, this professor gets excited watching students fail.
Here's the thing, BIO196, in general, is a class with a lot of information to learn in such little time. People that failed Regner's class probably were the ones that skipped class and studied only the night before. He took attendance through an app, where students have to answer quiz questions. His class is basically 98% lecture. So study up!
This class was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. His lectures were clear and helpful, definitely the best I've seen for bio, but his tests were crazy hard. He doesn't seem to care about his students' questions; send a long eloquent question with theories and examples, and he'll say "yes" "no" or "read textbook - sent from my iPhone"
I could not study more for his class. I am studying 3 hrs, 3 to 4 days a week, not including weekends which is an additional 5 hrs. I attend SI and follow his tips for studying. I am a psychology major, this is a prerequisite. I want to take physiology of psychology. I am not trying to be the next Mendel. Bummer.
Not a hard class, but a lot of material is covered. Be ready to study 1-3 hours a night. His tests are difficult. He uses mostly application problems not definition problems. Some of these questions were fair, most were not. I memorized all of the material and couldn't get higher than a b because of his tests. take someone else if you can.
Worst class I have ever taken. I have 60+ college credits coming into UNLV and have taken other biology classes.I had to audit this class. Exams were impossible and the questions were difficult to understand. Would not recommend.
His exams are ridiculously hard to prepare for. Reading the notes and book is clearly not enough. He engages you outside of the classroom, making you watch videos or read articles, as he will put them on the exam. Study guide (only made for exam 2) given by SI instructor was not helpful. Would not recommend taking this class.
Good guy who tries his best to keep the students interested and entertained but offers no real help as to what will be on the exams. Thank goodness the lab covers 30% of the total grade.
Regner's lectures seem very fair when he teaches and he's very clear during lectures. BUT somehow his tests don't reflect his lectures. I think his expectations are too high and most of us our nursing majors. I get more anxiety in this class than A&P. The lab is almost as if you're taking another class, so that doesn't help lecture material at all.
He doesn't answer your questions properly on email. He can make you feel dumb. Don't take his class! Search for other instructors.
He's not a bad professor. His lectures are mostly clear and he always explains if you have any questions and he does quizzes during class which motivates me to pay attention and attend. He is a little curt in his emails but he seems very approachable and his class is genuinely enjoyable. His tests are very hard and not curved.
It seems like all his test questions come from the powerpoint lectures but the somehow still end up being super hard. Some of the questions you just can't study for. Oh and he snapped at a kid for eating because he hadn't gotten to eat yet...?
Beware. Worst I ever had at UNLV. Do not take his classes. Yes he will snap on you. I took his class, he snapped on me so bad for asking questions. I guess he gets annoyed or mad, and I commented on some of the notes like other students do. For that he started tried to create problems for me at the BIOL department. Take somebody else.
Dr. Regner isnt that bad. Test are really hard, but most of it comes from LECTURES. Each exam has a short response, during lecture he "tells" the short response! 3 exams, drops the lowest one. If you get an A on the final, then you get an A for course. He is super sassy. Honestly dont take him unless you have no choice. There are in class quizzes
Regner was actually a decent professor if he wasn't so unapproachable and sassy sometimes. Tests are hard because they're applications of what you learn in lecture, so it's important to really understand the material and not just memorize it. That said, he seems annoyed when people ask questions so go to a tutor or lab TA if you need help.
Study the power points. Read the text for clarity. If it's not on the power points, it won't be on the exam. 2nd test is the most difficult. First and third test weren't too bad. Test question can be tough. Analytical in nature. Youtube videos help a lot. Regner can be difficult to approach so make sure you have done your h/w.
There are daily quizzes which he uses for attendance. These questions are a bit harder than the exam questions, but not always. The exams are pretty difficult. He is kinda short when answering questions. He often refers you to the book so make sure you have done your reading before hand. 3 exams w/ lowest 1 dropped+ Comprehensive final. (4 total)
Great instructor. Entertaining lectures. His exams are very difficult as many of the questions require you to analyze and apply the information you have learned as opposed to just rote memorization of facts. Attend every lecture, study the notes, and take advantage of all the extra resources he posts, and you'll do fine.
Not the best professor. The lectures are super boring but you have to pay attention to them in order to do well. Along with that, you must read the textbook and study his slides. The only way you can do well in this course is if you study and understand the material well.
While Kurt is a funny guy, he is a terrible professor. Impatient, disrespectful, and does little to help students understand the complex material. The textbook, as expensive as it is, serves solely as background info. The lectures and slides are the keys to success, but you're on your own from there. The class isn't impossible. The teacher is.
He's sarcastic during his lectures sometimes and he can be intimidating to talk to. He does mention some of the things that will be on the test during his lectures. At the end of the lectures we would go on tophat and towards the end of the class he would use that to take attendance. The tests are difficult and you must study hard to pass.
if I had to take him again or remove a limb, I'd cut off my left arm. If you ask questions, he'll make you feel like an idiot. When he tells you "it'll be on the exam", only a few of the questions will be relevant and everything will be things he either skimmed or didn't go over. I studied for hours and it didn't help because of his trick questions
Kurt is an interesting guy. He posts his lecture slides ahead of time, and it'll help immensely if you read through them before class - he likes to call on people, and you should be prepared. As for exams, he's big on application of ideas, so memorizing isn't enough, you need to really comprehend it and know how to apply it. A great professor.
Lectures are good and not too difficult to understand. Tests are almost all application which makes them very tricky. Not an easy class.
The lab really isn't too bad, much easier than 197. The actual material isn't that hard to grasp but his exams are really tricky!! The questions might have multiple right answers and you have to pick the "most correct" one. 80% of my class failed the 2nd exam. When I asked around, most were surprised because we thought we did good while taking it.
Very hard class, teacher is not very caring about his student. No matter how much time you study and read you will probably just do okay in the class.
He recently started curving the grades in his class, which is awesome. His tests are difficult and you really have to work for an A. You can get by without the book as long as you have the lab manual, which might be replaced in the near future. I am not a fan of the Top Hat quiz app he uses, which costs money and is only 1% of your grade.
You will need to dedicate ALL your time to his class and work VERY hard to pass. He likes to trick you and he asks very long questions on exams. I would HIGHLY suggest not taking him and choose a different professor.
Dr. Regner is not a bad professor for 196. The fact is, this class is an intro bio course with many students who find out after this that majoring in bio is not for them. Go to lecture, review the notes about 3 days in advance, and you'll do just fine. His criteria is super clear and he's actually a generous grader, dropping the lowest test score
I got a biology degree from UNLV, so I have had many biology professors. Dr. Regner is the worst professor I have ever had. Studied for his class harder than any other bio class, and his class is the lowest grade I have gotten in any class period. The other sections for this class do just fine while his averages are really low. That's enough said.
Regner is a good professor, I had him for 196 and 251. Lectures are funny and interesting as long as you pay attention. He gives a lot of hints of what's on the test, however tests can be a little difficult if you don't understand the material well. He is easy to understand but concepts can be hard, just requires at home study time. Would recommend
While Kurt is very knowledgeable in his field, the lectures that are given are quite sloppy compared to other bio professors. Its difficult to understand the material well when his lecture and pp are all over the place. There's a reason his known as the worst professor on campus based on his condescending and disrespectful personality. Stay away.
Regner is an amazing lecturer, he is clear with his thoughts. The class does have a lot of information but it is doable if you study. Go to SI if it is available for group study. The best way to get a good grade is to take good notes and USE THE SLIDES to study. Going to class is helpful for tophat (which can give extra credit) and hegivesexamhints
Regner is the worst professor I've had. His class is very hard and he is not helpful at all. He makes all of his PowerPoints and tests, so some are confusing. I asked him questions, and he gives sarcastic and unhelpful responses through email. Do not take his class! He is the worst professor and he does not care about his students at all.
He'll call on you in lecture to answer questions if you're wearing a hat. Decent teacher, everything is in the powerpoints but he isn't that good at explaining things deeper. The powerpoints are confusing to understand unless you attend class. Will generally point out things that will definitely be on the test, tests easier than Strong's
Regner as a professor is a good professor, very enthusiastic about the subject, and tries his best to help the students. The class, however, is tough as s#!%t. You have to really study to work to get at least a B. The lecture is fine but lab is challenging. Take good notes cause Regner explains concepts more easily than what's on the powerpoint.
I heard so much negative feedback from other students. To be honest, your grade is reflected on your work. If you want an A, get ready to read, go to class, and study! His Exams in my opinion are very fair and his PowerPoints help too! Good luck and study! This is a biology class if you cant pass, you shouldnt be a bio major then.
This is my second course with Dr. Regner, I took 196 with him and now this class. I really enjoyed him as a Professor, hes very funny and if you show that you care about the course, he will truly help you, you just need to put in the effort and not give lame excuses. This was a great course if you get the chance, take it!
I throughly enjoyed this class and have the upmost respect for Regner. Not going to lie, his class is tough, especially the lab. Advice: Study a little everyday, as their is a lot of information to understand. Dont take notes in class, instead pay close attention to his lectures. Side note: Regner is hard to approach, very awkward.
Dr. Regner is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about microbiology. His slides are a bit confusing if you don't go to lecture, because most are shorthanded. He tends to be sarcastic in class, but during office hours, he is tremendously helpful. This class does require a good amount of studying, but you do learn very applicable information.
His exam questions are from his lecture (sometimes not on PPT, but pay attention to what he actually SAYS) as well as the websites he emails frequently. Exams are very straight forward, and short answer portion is easy as long as you pay attention to the RED words in his PPTs. His class isn't super easy, but if you put in the work, it pays off
Though the class is undoubtedly challenging, Regner is a good and respectable professor. Study hard for tests, the amount of work you put into this class will reflect on your grades.
I had Dr. Regner previously for Biol 304 and people only say that class is hard when they don't study or come to class. He really is a great professor, really funny (semi-nerdy), and genuinely cares about his students. This new Phage Discovery class gives you real hands on experience and is very laidback. Overall a great time and I recommend.
I don't understand why his average is so low. He is an okay professor, not incredibly bad. He was straightforward with his questions on the test compared to another professor I had for the first half of sem. You know what he is asking for. He does make some inappropriate jokes occasionally, so if you are easily offended that could be a downside.
Regner is a great prof. and explains the material thoroughly. Students who are complaining about him probably never studied. Go to class, pay attention, study and you should have no problem getting an A. He's pretty funny too which makes lecture more enjoyable.
I was confused during majority of his lectures. By far one of the worst professors I've ever had. I do not recommend him for this class. The tests never measured up to the lectures. I am retaking the class now. I studied weeks for his tests and still didn't do good. He is known as one of the hardest/worst professors, I do not recommend.
Dr. Regner has clear grading criteria and is very caring. He wants the students to understand the concepts and is always ready to answer any questions. The exam questions are straight from the lectures and if you pay attention to what he says, the class will be interesting and challenging (in a good way). His class is for people who like to study.
He goes really fast, but always asks for questions
Professor Regner is very passionate about what he teaches which makes it more interesting to learn. He is very funny and sarcastic. Be prepared to be called out on because he calls out on students. Biology is a hard class so just make sure to make time to study. His exams weren't too hard but they were difficult.
Definitely a hard class. Just go to class and listen to his lectures and you'll be fine. Tests are hard, but not too bad. He's not as "tricky" as previous posters say.
Biology 196 is a tough class overall so studying for it at least three hours a day is manadatory. Going to class is optional because the information Regner tells you is in the textbook & when he says that a image will be the on test. It most likely a lie. So just get the textbook because it is your lifeline and you should be fine.
Professor Regner definitely has a tough class, but I thought he was a great professor and he knows his stuff and is good at what he teaches. He offers several extra learning resources and is available for extra help. If you study and work hard you'll be fine. I'd definitely take him again and recommend him.
I dont know why so many reviews say he is condescending with questions. Every few slides he will pause and ask if anyone has any questions. He always answers to the best of his ability. Not once did I hear him be condescending or rude. Its a tough class but not impossible.
Very willing to help over email and in office hours. Can have misleading powerpoints (ask lots of questions if you aren't clear on something), but points out what will be on his exam in lecture, so GO TO CLASS. Write down ALL the i-clicker questions and the correct answer in detail, because they're not all posted online. Exams aren't that specific.
Have (Had a 4.0) in far more difficult classes than his but got a B+. His graders grade inconsistently for the written sections of exams but he will not review said grading. No curve, lose points for missed attendance. I don't generally care about personalities but very pretentious considering his limited knowledge base.
Its a Typical bio class. Dr. Regner is really good about meeting with people and answering any questions about tests, etc. love his class!
Although I somewhat respect him, Regner is one of the worst profs I've had at UNLV. While the info he teaches is complex, he isn't always clear when teaching. Forces class participation, belittles and dismisses students when giving incorrect answers. Can tell he cares about students, but doesn't know how to show it. Lies about what will be on exam.
He reads off his PowerPoint slides and doesnt explain much on any of it. Each lecture has like 50 or so slides and is a ton of information. Tests are multiple choice but if you get a few wrong you wont get an A. Be prepared to learn the material on your own/teach it to yourself via other methods
Bio 196 is a difficult class but Mr. Regner lays out the information in a way that is easiest for me to understand the topics. His class, as all biology classes, require you to take notes, read the textbook, re-read lecture notes, and use outside information to get a good grade on the exams. His office hours and SI hours are really beneficial.
Class is based on his powerpoints, defer to those for studying. Its is no where near as hard as people make it out to be. Kind of like AP bio with a bit more information. Guy is snarky occasionally, which is hilarious. Take it in good spirits, humor for thick skinned. I think he has a hard time understanding why people dont get the concepts.
Most, if not all, of the questions from straight from the powerpoints and diagrams that are done in class. Make sure you write down the answers to the iClickers because they tend to show up on exams. Very accessible outside class, smart guy who knows his stuff. If you struggle with concepts, find him in office hours. He's hilarious. DON'T WEAR RED.
Dr. Regner does seem like he makes this course a lot harder than other professors, and may come off as a jerk but he genuinely does want students to learn (he just has very high standards). Although it was a very hard class, I learned more than I could have asked for. Go to SI sessions and take notes on I clicker questions. He makes you earn it.
If you do bad on an exam, then you do badly in his class. His class grade is literally just exams. He's a horrible teacher and his lectures don't even make sense. If you have the opportunity to have a different professor, then I recommend doing so.
Exams are 60% of the grade so if you do bad on an exam theres no coming back from that. Quizzes are hard to study for because you could get an A on one and a D on another by studying the exact same way.
He is very hard to listen to and his powerpoint aren't very well organized. He likes to openly make assumptions that his students are lazy and procrastinate, particularly those who ask questions on topics he already covered. Homework is online, approximately 60 questions per chapter, along with a quiz. Just study the topics he focuses on in lecture
he loves calling out on people to check if they understand the topic he is talking about so do not wear anything that makes you stand out.
Only had Dr. Regner for the first half of the semester but he was great. Powerpoints are straightforward and he makes sure to add fun little trivia on the side just in case you're bored. He picks on people whenever there are discussions, but he won't force you to answer if you say you don't know. Study the slides for exams early b/c there are a lot
Only had him for half the semester, but I wish I had him the whole time. He has a great sense of humor about biology and makes it clear about what you need to know for the exams. He's very straightforward and has clear expectations; he loves famous experiments for exams questions.
This class was an overall easy class, but iclicker was used so you must attend lectures. Pre and post lecture quizzes. Only con is that what he said was going to be on the test during lectures rarely appeared on the test; however, other than that forming a study group is the best way to go.
IF YOU DONT HAVE TO TAKE HIM DONT. 4 exams throughout the sem plus a final. post and pre lecture quizzes which aren't too bad. The only reason you shouldn't take him is because your grades are NOT TRUE AT ALL. You basically have to go through the semester not knowing EXACTLY where you are. My final grade was 10% lower that what was shown on canvas.
Dr. Regner was THE worst professor that I have ever had. There are 4 exams plus a final. However, beware the tests are very difficult. The wording of the questions seem as though they are meant to trick you. He relies heavily on his lectures, which are extremely in-depth, yet majority of the information is not on the exams.
Tests contained trivial information - if you want to do well, focus narrowly on the slides. To include information with little relevance to being a biologist or physician. He also thinks that he's a lot funnier than he is. I don't think he doesn't know no one is laughing at his "jokes". He also calls on students during class, if you're into that.
This is a bio class so expect it to be difficult. The tests are designed to make you take the info that is presented and create the connections between it. Pay attention to the iClicker questions. Regner truly wants his students to do well, but he isn't going to just give A's away. He is excited about biology, and it shows.
Regner is a very easy going, friendly guy. He knows the material he is teaching, but be wary of asking questions, as he usually cant answer them... He makes the material very easy so keep it easy. Be careful, as exam 1 was very easy, and exam 2 is much more difficult. No study guides, make your own and dont use the textbook as it is useless.
I wouldn't take this professor. Ended up believing my final grade was a B+ but due to the inaccuracy of final grade on WebCampus, I recieved an F. Very lecture heavy. iClicker and pre/post lectures were somewhat helpful but don't rely on it too much. Tests were confusing and tend to trick you! Beware, he calls out people to participate.
Dr. Regner tries to make the class difficult to initiate new bio majors. Even so, it's not that hard of a class. Be prepared to study. If you know everything on the slides and his commentary, you'll be fine. When I took his class (a few semesters ago) he used tophat to take attendance and give quizzes.
If you can help it, take someone else. He's not horrible, but he grades tough and isn't the best lecturer. If you ask him a question, for about a minute or two he'll talk about something unrelated to your question then suddenly stop mid sentence then ask, "did I answer your question...?"
Not the easiest to converse with, however very knowledgable with 196 concepts. Class is not without difficulty. Make the most of 196 lab, study regularly, read the book, attend class, ask questions when needed to him or the SI & you might surprise yourself with how much you'll learn. Good teacher, straightforward, but you need to put in the effort.
Dr. Regner is very unprofessional at his way of contacting his students! He also reads off his slides and his exams are made to trick you into rethinking about your answers.
Absolutely horrible. I was so eager and excited to learn more about Biology as it's one of my favorite subjects! He made lectures boring, hard to understand, complex, and absolutely disorganized. Instead of learning BIOL for the fun of it, I will be taking an Anthropology class instead. Thanks for nothing Regner! :)
Many people reviewing this professor don't take into consideration how hard the class itself is, Regner makes learning in this class much more convenient if you're really paying attention as he notes what topics will be on the exam. A good grade is more than possible to achieve with his lectures just like any other professor.
He's not as bad as the ratings says. Go to class, re-watch the lectures and do the assignments, which were actually the annoying part, and everything he says is on the test is really on the test.
I was scared of his class at first due to these reviews but he's honestly not that bad. Not a very approachable person though. Curves his exams if the median is lower than 76.9%. Exams are narrowly focused on his powerpoints. Do well in lab and it'll boost your grade up. Also don't bother using the book for anything except the online HW.
Great teacher! A lot of students really hate him but I think if you want A, take his class. a).dont buy textbook, just buy access code. b). Only study powerpoint+Lecture videos. Some say his questions are tricky but they aren't. c).Some reason his lectures makes me really tired.
Such a bully and a ball buster!!!! He doesnt deserve one star. Hes ridiculous.
He is so boring. His lectures are terrible.
This class is not as bad as the reviews say IF you really put the effort in. There are 4 tests plus a final (he does curve sometimes), iClicker points (required for in-class attendance and credit), and online textbook assignments (do not buy any hard copies, wait until the school year). I recommend studying and showing up to SI as much as you can!
He is a very easy and fair professor to take for Biology. As long as you rewatch his lectures a few times you will get a good grade. Tests are based of lectures entirely. Curves exams when class median is lower than 76.9%. One of the easier professors to take for this course. If you put in the work you'll get the grade you deserve.
Prof. Regner isn't a bad instructor, however he is very specific with what he wants on exams. Despite that, he is also very clear in class about what we are expected to know for the exams and written response answers. Studying his slides and rewatching lecture is what Id recommend to do well, as well as taking lab seriously.
Dr. Regner is a great professor and only wants students to succeed. The textbook is useless just buy access code. To prepare for exams review and understand the concepts in the lectures that are posted online so you can re watch. He also points out the written responses that will be on the test. Attend SI and office hours and you will pass.
Couldve gotten a better grade if I spent more time. Uploads his lectures and barely uses the books. WATCH THE VIDEOS/MOVIES!! Tophat quizzes every class for participation, helps grade. Just take time to really study powerpoints and you can get an A. I had him for bio 196 and did not like him. But hes much better in 251! Very passionate about micro.
Professor Regner is an amazing professor. Biology 189 does not cover easy material so don't expect an easy A in any BIOL 189 class. However, he made it less difficult. He records all of his lectures for you to access later and lets you know what he will expect on exams, which are very straightforward and not meant to trick you. I recommend him.
Prof. Regner isn't the best person to listen to. He talks really slowly, and he lost me a lot of times during class (I mostly never been distracted in class, except in his). But he posted Panopto recordings of the lectures, WATCH those (at 1.75x or 2x speed)! They help! Come to class, take Tophat questions and take home answers. Test is on Tophat.
Worst professor I've ever had. Lectures heavy and is rude.
Have questions? Dont ask. You will get an unhelpful and rude response. Very rarely have I taken a professor that so obviously thinks every single one of his students is a moron. The best part about his class is that he posts lecture recordings. Its a very helpful resource.
Tough class but I think his lectures are clear and really easy to follow. He gives you iClicker questions that are straight from the exam, save them and the answers and study them. He also gives you pointers in class on what exact diagrams you need to know for the exams. He does panopto recordings so you can watch it if you miss a class.
I hope you don't trust the reviews that rated him poorly. The class is only hard because it's a transition from high school bio to college bio. His exam questions are fair and only asks you things that are covered in class. He's extremely helpful during office hours and wants you to learn. Has dry/sarcastic dad humor. He's a good prof!
I've taken Regner for multiple classes and he's honestly really good at teaching. He's very clear on the things that he wants you to know. He makes the material smarter and not harder. Exam questions aren't tricky as long as you study the ppts and take good notes/pay attention. He's funny and is very helpful in office hours.
Please don't be afraid of all the bad ratings, he really is NOT that bad. His tests are straightforward, he uploads all his powerpoints to Canvas, uploads all his lectures to Canvas, and gives you review sheets to prepare for tests. Very solid professor, pretty funny at times too.
Professor Regner loved to overcomplicate concepts and just constantly made things more difficult when he did not need to. He changed his testing formats and syllabus almost every week. He was a tough grader, and never answered questions. He tested us on concepts that were not covered by him or are found in the textbook. My advice, take someone else
Mr. Regner overall is a great professor to have for Bio 189. His lectures are exactly what's on the test. He helps curve the test which is helpful! He is funny and sometimes can be "sarcastic". You can be nervous to ask him for advice but don't he means wells! Go to S.I.
Regner is an amazing BIO189 Professor. The iClicker questions are very much helpful when studying because he talks about it during class to get to the answer. They also will most likely be part of the test! Attendance isnt required since he post lectures online but go to class for iClicker points!
If you show up to syllabus day and see both prof Edwardo Robleto and prof Kurt Regner, drop the class. The semester is split between the two professors. Each prof has a diff teaching style and diff test format. Regner takes questions directly from lectures: simple and straightforward. Tophat questions will show up on the test. 3 exams weighed@ 48%
I honestly dont understand why he has such a low rating. He makes the class a lot easier than what it is and hes definitely someone you want to take for 189. During his lectures HE WILL TELL YOU WHICH ONE IS ON THE TEST. His clicker questions will also be on the test so take notes. He lectures good, STUDY THE SLIDES. He also reads RMProf LOL.
His grading rubric 50% 3 exams, 25% lab, and 25% final exam. The lecture videos are helpful and provide great explanations on the material but his tests are wordy and extremely difficult to answer. His test questions are biased and very detailed and he gives you the general topic in the question then has detailed question options. Don't take him
I like him personally and I think his lectures are great, but the test questions is why I give him such a low rating. The exams are extremely difficult even for A students, and he says specifically in his lecture what will be on the test but then none of what he says is actually on the test. Extremely confusing question and thats your entire grade
I really don't know why people are complaining about the exams, the questions are usually straightforward and right from his slides. I honestly feel like Regner makes this class easier than a microbio class usually is. My problem is that there is an overwhelming amount of content we need to know for each exam, but memorize the slides and youre good
Please don't take Kurt Regner. I wouldn't recommend taking this Professor to anyone. Just because someone knows information about topics doesn't mean they need to teach it, Regner knows what he's talking about but he does not need to be teaching this course. I don' have enough characters to type everything I need to say but pls just trust me.
To have Prof Regner as a professor is a challenge in itself. Everyone knows Microbiology is one of the hardest courses to take as a Biology major, but having Prof Regner just made my life 10000x harder. His exams are based off a HUGE test bank that makes it extremely difficult to know what topics even matters to study.
Professor Regner is knowledgeable in his area of Microbiology, but SHOULD NOT TEACH. Each exam has 8 lectures worth of material. No study guide. Indicates "this will be in the exam" and is not. I will be retaking this class, I have the opportunity at UNLV, but I refuse to waste my money. The Microbiology department is terrible for student success.
He's proud that not many of his students pass with A's. Doesn't even respond to emails and is complicated when scheduling office hours. His tests are VERY lecture heavy, the smallest detail will be on the test. Not to mention, he's bias for his opinion written response, he will mark you down if he doesn't like what you say.
Avoid at all cost... many students complain about Regner and yet nothing is ever done.
Do not take professor Regner whatsoever. You may think you can slide by from some of the reviews but do not. Coming from a student that has passed all of her previous courses with A's which includes Kin, Chem etc., and now I am not able to pass the course with a B maybe not even a C. Take this class else where. He does not care about his students
Dr. Regner was organized since he posted lectures on time/earlier, but it might take additional communication for office hours. The lectures are quite detailed, so it feels overwhelming, but the exams focus on those notes. Make sure to really understand all the concepts. Have a study group or make a study guide. Pretty decent given the circumstance
(I don't know if I 'm allowed to post averages here). But the averages for his exams are really low. There were 3 regular exams and 1 final exam. I think he is one of those professors who is so passionate about the subject they teach that they forget to break things down to the level of students who are learning about it for the first time.
I was super scared to take him because the reviews were so bad but I was pleasantly surprised. He makes it clear what he wants and even curved the tests so I think the people who complain are the ones who wanted an easy A. It's not an easy class but put in the work and you'll do good. He also cares for his students and sends out tons of resources.
Kind of confused about the negative reviews. Hes a great lecturer and tells you whats going to be on the tests. Hes good at explaining things. No surprises. One of the fairest professors Ive had at UNLV. Personally didnt use the books at all just used the lectures + notes & studied them!
He really is that bad. If you need accommodations or unexpected health issues, TAKE SOMEONE ELSE. He was incredibly hard to deal with for anything outside the syllabus, is a stickler, and doesn't even follow his rules. No compassion at a personal level. Exams were from an extremely large bank of Qs, no study guide. It isn't hard- he makes it hard.
3 tests and 1 final exam all worth 75%--lab is 25%. Test heavy, but if you have a good memory and take the time to study (even just a few days before the exams) everything is based totally on the powerpoints and you'll do totally fine (plus it ends up being super nice not having to do a ton of work as a ft student). Akila is the best for lab!
After the first day in class I didn't show back up to the lectures since attendance was not mandatory. I watched lectures online, and most at 1.75 or 2x speed. Watch the lectures a couple times, take notes, and do a bit of studying, and should walk away with a B or better.
I'm not sure what the negative reviews are about. Dr. Regner is very straightforward. There are three lecture exams and a final exam. Textbooks are optional, all test material comes DIRECTLY from the lecture slides. If he highlights it or circles it during lecture, take the hint, you'll see it on an exam. You have to put in the work to get an A.
So i'm torn on Kurt. He's a nice enough guy, I just didn't care for the class. It just seems so incredibly lazy that he had no assignemtns other than the exams. Most students learn where they are following behind, not having to wait until a test. A little condescending to students, but I always found it just dry humour.
Save yourself the stress! Everything on his tests are on the slides he provides but each test there is maybe 4 different PowerPoints with 50+ slides. Even the tiniest detail could be on the test. I took this class thinking I would be one of the few to beat the odds and I was not able to because the class is too hard.
Yes, the class is challenging. Microbiology is complicated. Period. 100% of the tests are from his lectures, so do not skip lectures. I learned more from his class than from any other class I took. The lab was easy, I learned a lot, and it was fun. His class requires some discipline to study, but you will do great if you take school seriously.
Regner has to be one of the worst professors I've ever had at UNLV, he doesn't seem to care much about his students and it shows. On top of that there is a complete lacking of any supplemental activities such as homework to help your grade in the class, it's all based off of his very poorly made power points that are tough to follow or comprehend.
If you expect to be respected by your professor, choose someone else. He is very rude. Others said he has dry humor but it is far from that. If you ask him a question, he will try to make you look stupid in front of the whole class. It is extremely hard to get him to make simple accommodations. There is no homework or quizzes to help your grade.
I saw all the horrible reviews and was terrified of taking this class, but he ended up being decent. This class is straightforward, exams are STRAIGHT from the slides, and if you have a good memory you should be good. The bad thing is that he doesn't have additional work to help with grades, so STUDY.
Prof Regner is fine I am doing good in his lec, but the lab portion of his/this class is HORRIBLE. It's ok to read ahead from the required lab book, but we have to watch MANY youtube vids for the prelab 10min-10LONG type Qs/wk. Lab reports are confusing too as it is written a week or 2 & even 3 after the experiments. Ridiculous lab setup overall.
The class consists of three exams and the final only. No assignments or extra credit. Everything on exams comes directly from the slides. EXACTLY EVERYTHING. The final was weird because there were many questions that he never covered in class or spoke about. Exams get curved but only so that the average score reaches 74%.
He's pretty straightforward teaching wise and has a dry humor which I actually found funny sometimes. There is no other work except the exams but I actually liked not having any homework due. The exams are directly from the slides so as long as you put in the time to watch the lectures, take notes, and study, you'll be fine.
Hello, I've taken Dr. Regner for BIO 207 and 217 (currently). He is often given a bad rap on rate my professor, however, I would have nothing but praise. He has sass and is blunt, however he truly cares about his students and his straight-forwardness is refreshing. If you have been hesitant to take his courses, then this is your sign to enroll.
I am currently taking this professor for Bio 217 and he is great. Assignments are easy to understand and straightforward. They don't take a long time to do and the class is an easy A. He's very funny and the class is a great time. Always excited to go to class! Don't listen to the bad reviews, he's fantastic!
Professor Regner is not someone I recommend for microbio. I went to the lectures, some info were not given explanations & so much was on the PowerPoints. Only grades were tests & I went to the office hours to go over them but he would rush going through my questions & was impatient. He commented a lot & was unwelcoming when I truly wanted to learn.
If you show up to class youll do fine because he goes through whatever information is on the slides and gives easy examples of them. He only has three grades in the class which are the exams but he also has a thing where if you get an A on the final the entire grade changes. His exams are pretty straightforward and he wont do any paper exams.
I do not recommend taking Professor Regner. His class is strictly exam-based, so there are no other assignments to help boost your grades. Exam material comes strictly from his PowerPoint slides which are heavily dense, at times 50+ pages long, and a lot of times make no sense at all because the information seems to be scattered all over the place.
Please do not take him if you can take 251 somewhere else. If you do end up taking this class I suggest you show up for every lecture. In his lecture, he will tell you what info you should be studying for the exam. He does not provide homework to help you, grade is based on exams only. He does not care about his student so you are on your own
I scores consistently well on exams. There is no resentment lying beneath this review. You might be wondering - why the low score, then? It's because Regner is not very receptive to constructive feedback. For example, if there is something wrong with a slide, think twice before questioning him after class. He might treat you differently afterwards.
Professor Regner's BIOL251 class is challenging but rewarding. The exams are tough, but if you attend lectures, study the slides, and use tools like unstuckstudy ai, you can excel. The material is dense but engaging. Overall, a worthwhile course.
