Not a horrible professor but not a great one either. All the work you do is online so you really only have to show up for your lab session to get the grades. As long as you stay on top of all your work and meet all the due dates (lots of work) + be prepared for the test, there's no reason you cant get an A or a high B.
He made one confusing class easy. At first, it took time to get used to the structure of the class, but once you understand it, it can be really easy. You have to definitely work for it, but it is definitely an easy A.
He gives the in class lecture online so coming to class is optional but worth going incase you run into some trouble, he is there for help. The assignments are difficult and so are the labs but working with your group makes the task simpler and less stressful. 4 exams, final cumulative, but allowed a cheatsheet. 1 video project, not hard.
Honestly, a lot of the class is common sense. If you have a Windows and stay on schedule, it is very easy to succeed
Great class with a great professor really made sure you succeeded.
The class structure takes a bit to get used to, but once you do, it's really easy. There's at least four assignments each week with one quiz during lab time. He puts his lectures online, so you don't have to show up. He takes attendance during lab, so you have to show up because there's always a quiz. Overall, easy class if you do the work.
Great Teacher! His class is not that difficult if you put in the work. Attendance is not required because it is not a grade and lectures are online, but it helps to go to class. Study for the tests and you'll be fine.
Tons of assignments that aren't worth much but somehow will hurt your grade significantly if you miss a single one (unclear grading). Exams don't relate to assignments/material covered. The TA's aren't friendly or helpful. Would consider taking another professor over Schmitz if given the option again. Not the worst but certainly not the best.
Good class, lots of work. There were around 5-6 small assignments due weekly (nothing hard). Lectures are great but don't relate to the test material which is mostly purely just textbook material. Textbook was free. Attendance is mandatory for weekly Lab quizzes and not for Workshop days (Excel). Overall, take him! Grades do weigh heavily sometimes
You don't need to show up to workshop (lecture) because its all posted online and he doesn't track attendance. You DO need to show up for lab because attendance is mandatory there and you need to do the in lab quiz to unlock another weekly assignment. Stay on top of the deadlines because workshope, indiv, and collab challenges are due on diff days
This class was really completely a hassle and makes you work hard instead of working smart. Lots of little assignments every week that are hard to keep up with for the beginning of the semester, the lecture is nearly 2 hours just to show us tutorials that are 15 minutes on YouTube, the exams are based on things we teach ourselves completely...
Alright, i was lost as to what i needed to do until like a month into the class lol... so let me help you all. there are 4 assignments due every week, spread out so its chill, if you want help go to the lectures (i didnt). make sure you go to the labs to complete the colabs and the quiz, that affected me hard. second half of class is writing code.
Fairly easy class as long as you keep up with the work. All the assignments due are spread out so its easy to keep track. He made all the lectures into videos so you don't have to show up. There is a curve at the end.
The professor is only useful if you go to the workshops, other than that you never see him. I forgot his name multiple times throughout the semester. The TA's in workshop are helpful but the ones in my lab were rude and snooty. Tests are the most challenging part b/c you get a study guide but there's no clear guide for what's on the test.
I personally think that this class is unnecessary. I didnt like it. There are like 4 assignments due every week. You dont have to show up to lecture, but you have to show up to lab. The tests are based on book information that you have to teach yourself.
Lectures are not mandatory, but they are helpful when you do your weekly projects. When you do your labs, one part will be with a group. Read your modules ahead of time so that you can be prepared for the quizzes. Biggest tip for studying for tests: review everything that is assigned to you. + Lab attendance is mandatory
difficult 2nd half of sem, workshop videos online, do not need to go to workshop, must attend lab bc lab quiz is given 1st 10 mins of class, collab/individual challenges are difficult, tests are hard, study vocab for tests, gives curves, deadline work, put name on all work, study guide is helpful, homework is consuming, great prof & many resources
You don't have to go to lectures but I recommend it because some of the work can be confusing g and you can get help from the TA's in lecture. Go to the labs because there is a mandatory quiz. The tests are mainly on the module quizzes you take and he gives the study guides so do those and you should be fine. Do video project early!!
1 module a week: contains roadmap (aids in understanding of material), workshop challenge (recommend following lectures instead of videos), collaboration challenge (in lab with group), and individual challenge (at home by self). Video project is easy; also has lab quizzes and 3 exams. Don't be overwhelmed by the workload; it's not a hard class.
Theres videos posted online for you you dont have to come to lecture but you do need to go to lab. He lets us work collaboratively in lab. USE THE TAs they help a lot ! He is a very nice teacher and a great teacher as well ! Make sure you read your online book it helps a lot his test questions come from the book and lab quizzes literally!
I really was nervous to take CIS, but he laid the class out perfectly to me. I knew what was expected every week and what was graded. It was a lot of homework, but it wasn't neccesariliy hard work. Definitely join a group chat with your class for help when you need it.
This is class is very straight forward. Do work and you will get good grades. There are 2 quizzes and 3 assignments a week and you have to pay attention to him and the book to get good grades in this class. He is really good at responding back and will answer pretty quickly. He doesn't budge on grades. Get ready to do a lot of work.
Hes a great professor I absolutely love him! Everything is pretty straight forward do the individual challenges collaboration challenges and workshops the workshops videos are posted online you dont have to go to class & you do the collaboration activities in lab which is once a week!
Honestly you didnt really need to go to class because all the slides are online and he also post videos explaining them. Although I didnt come in contact with him once and I wouldnt expect him to respond to your emails. Labs arent that bad!
Stay away from this guy. Don't waste your time asking for help, because no matter what the situation is (and I've had plenty) he will immediately say "It's your job, not mine." Even in the middle of a flipping pandemic, he isn't willing to help. Numerous assignments due each week. Exams teach yourself the textbook. Very disrespectful as well !!
COVID REVIEW There are group meetings, but you don't have to actually do the work with your group. There are videos, slides, & quizzes for each assignment, & looking at them is key to understand anything. He has really good communication, & his TA team is really good when you don't understand anything. You get one cheat sheet during exams as well
(COVID) He's great! Structure is confusing at first so stay on top of hw/deadlines. The assignments have to be done in order or you can't move on (Workshop > Collab Challenge > Individual Challenge). Go through the book & FILL OUT his exam study guides (not just the vocab) and you'll get A's. Class is more tedious than hard, but you can't be lazy
There are a very components to this class. Non-graded workshops that you have to do, Collaboration Assignment quiz and file that you have to submit and well as a Individual assignment file and quiz you have to submit. 3 Exams that you have to take notes for ( a cheat sheet is allowed), and a Video Project. Easy A if you keep up with the work.
This class is an easy A IF you take the time each week to do your assignments. Expect to turn in 3 assignments and complete 3 quizzes each week. It is time consuming, but pretty straightforward and manageable. Professor Schmitz is a very thorough professor and makes instructions clear! 3 exams with lockdown+webcam and 1 video project.
Kurtz was great, he was readily available during his office hours or Via email, he seemed to care about the students. He has tests that he let us use one sheet of paper for if you prepare by writing down all the terms in the book and paying attention during the workshops you will easily pass. There was one project and it was pretty easy.
Great professor that will help you when needed. Just need to read the material and be hands on with your assignments and team.
This was one of my favorite classes Ive ever taken. I learned real life skills from this class that Im still using. Professor Schmitz was the nicest professor Ive ever had and he is amazing. If you are lucky enough to get into his class you need to take it. As long as you do the HW, study for the tests, and do the assignments you WILL get an A
The single most Nitpicky grader I've ever had. Through with the material but beware of the little mistakes they will cost you.
there are pretty much three assignments every week. the first one, all you have to do is follow everything he does in his lecture, the second one, you work with a group to answer quiz questions, and the third, you answer quiz questions on your own. follow study guides for the exam and itll be an easy A. theres also a project thats pretty easy
I liked this teacher because he was always straight to the point. His grading criteria is very clear and every week has the same schedule. He also responds to emails and his lectures help you step by step. Although he does give around 4 assignments each week, they are fairly easy and you can get through them quickly.
The class is set up pretty simple. But its very time consuming. next to that, i worked very hard for an A plus but he decided not to give me less than half of a point to get there. very frustrating. And this, after a horrible year during COVID-19 in which students have to learn online and figure out everything by themselves. This is not motivating
You get your own little group you are with for the rest of the semester. The work is not bad at all, exams can be pretty tough. Uses lockdown with webcam.
EASY CLASS! Passed with an A. Just keep up with your work! It can seem like a lot when you first start but its so easy, dont overwhelm yourself. Lots of due dates (mon, wed, fri) Attend the help sessions when you need help! Do the work and youll get an A.. simple as that!
4 assignments every week including a reading and a quiz, pretty easy as long as you understand the workshop video. collaboration challenge most weeks so you meet with your group members to get it done. test are mostly from the readings & some questions from the workshop but you can use one sheet of notes.
At the beginning of the course, this class seems scary. But you'll realize the work is fairly manageable and help is always easy to find. There's groupwork in the class, and it helps to have someone to work with. Lots of due dates, but if you keep up with the work you're fine. Plus, the professor explains things in depth so it's easy for beginners.
Took CIS2010 in the summer (online), the class seemed like a mountain of work at first but it's usually completed within 1:30-2hrs, twice a week. Great professor, really in-depth. Overall, awesome class to take for a beginner in computer science.
The lecture is optional; labs are mandatory. Labs: you work in a team of 4 and do basic activities. (Team is free pick and permanent). Exams are passable if you have been reviewing the study guide and studying off of it. For excel 3 parts every week, the workshop is given, CC is the lab, IC is solo activities. Overall, decent class and super easy.
He is so clear and organized! Offers in person lectures where he walks you through the assignment and insures a 100! Each week you have 3 quizzes but as long as you put in the slightest amount of effort theyre easy As! Also requires a group lab with other students which makes your lab much easier to go to understanding! Overall would recommend!
Anyone could understand his lectures. There are so many quick (and easy) grades throughout the week that you could fail an exam and still be okay. There's a cute video project that only takes a day or two even if you don't know the software. Take notes from the textbook (.5-2 hours a week), go to class, and do the homework and you'll get an easy A.
Was gonna wait until after the semester was over to rate him, but I cannot stand this professor. CIS 2010 in general isn't hard, but he is strict about a lot of things so attendance will count towards your grade in this class. Tests weren't that hard, but he throws a lot of curveballs and confusing questions. He was also rude too.
Theres literally no reason you should take him. He is literally relentless with the amount of assignments he forces students to get done. I did him through hybrid.
-lots of assignments -its not very difficult, it is just a lot to do -mandatory labs, gotta work in groups -TA's are there to help -course is strange, not everything feels cohesive and he doesn't have the best vibe -exams are on lockdown but you have to go into school -exams are mostly over book material and roadmap questions
Honestly one of the best classes I have taken at GSU. It was really easy and straight to the point. There was A LOT of work but all was very manageable. Nothing much to study for except for 3 exams. We would work in groups weekly so try to find people you get along with the first week of class! Take his class for an easy A.
Lectures aren't mandatory because he posts them too, but lab IS mandatory. You work in groups and the assignments on icollege can be challenging so make sure to complete the assignments before you get to the collabs. Some group assignments can take longer than the time given in class so be prepared to stay after. There are assistants to help.
I wouldnt say this class is hard but you definitely have to put in work for a godos grade. Good professor, I can tell hes passionate about this subject.
I dont think I even interacted with this man once, his lectures were optional. Class was easy and as long as you can learn things kind of our your own this class gives you the framework for that.
honestly a great professer work is not hard pretty simple, 4 assignments due every week , and group projects happens throughout the semester during lab
He is very accessible and you can tell he is very passionate about this course. A lot of work which is very time consuming but it is not too hard, lab attendance is mandatory and TAs grades your work. He gives extra credit and curve the grade. You have to study for test since there is a lot of information that you are expected to know.
Lecture classes weren't mandatory, however; the lab portion, where weekly collaborative challenges were taken, was mandatory; he gave a detailed lecture on the chapter's objective, and the workshops for each chapter were straightforward, which made the following assignments for that chapter easy to do on your own.
If you are focusing on many other things at once like classes or work, do not take him. The workload is absolutely insane for no reason at all. He makes you work in groups at the labs and they usually take quite a bit of time.
The online lectures/workshops were great. Just be sure to understand the weekly flow of assignments. Lab section of the course you will have to collaborate with classmates to complete some assignments.
Loved the structure of this class so much! It was so organized and easy to navigate. Prof. Schmitz uploads video and written tutorials to literally every assignment. The grade book always updates quickly so it's easy to track your grades. He is lenient about late assignments as well. 10/10 Definitely recommend!!
Tough class and it is hard to force on my other classes.
The amount of work can look intimidating but if you manage your time properly you will do good! 3 tests and an easy video project at the end of the semester. Attendance is not mandatory but the lab is, make sure you pick good lab partners! Class was not bad at all just do your work and study. Will probably end with an A after the final. Great Prof!
Labs are mandatory! I found it easier to watch the videos than to attend class since I can pause and continue at my own discretion! Lab work was easy until the end of the semester when it took a while to figure out! So much homework that at one point it felt like I was drowning.Exams were kinda stupid in my opinion since the study guide didn't help
Dr. Schmitz is a great professor. He is dedicated and helpful. His class is not hard at all if you put some work into it. If he tells you to start the video project early, take his advice. The project is worth 10% of your grade. Being 40 yrs old and not good at technology, if I can make an A, there is no reason for anyone to fail his class.
This class was pretty much self study but it is structured so its easy to learn and study for the tests the hard part is just doing the assignments.
Do not believe the rating he is not a good teacher.
Do not believe the rating he is not a good teacher. Students are better off taking this same class at perimeter college. Good luck asking for help he doesn't care if students fail or pass the class. The assignments doesn't prepare for the exams. Make sure you have a good group to work with if you to take this class.
Dr. Schmitz was a pretty good and knowledgeable professor. I took him in Spring 23 and received an A+. CIS is slightly difficult no matter who you take, so you have to apply yourself as well if you want a good grade. Make sure you go to your lab every week (attendance for lab counts toward your grade). All exams are taken in the proctored lab.
Attendance is not mandatory but it can be difficult to follow if you do not go. There are a lot of assignments. For the group work make sure its a good group or you can be in trouble.
This professor was alright, don't get me wrong he is very smart and good at what he does. His lectures were posted online and they were straightforward. But he is a super tough grader, and his responses could be a bit brassy at times. The class average for the exams was about a 70% so take that as you will :/ Make sure you turn things on time.
As a student who does not strive well in typical academic settings, class tyle was to my liking. I will say, you must complete assignments on time, and there are consistent assignments every week. I did not attent a single one of his lectures as attendance was not mandatory, but you will be required to attend the workshops. Tests require studying.
I enjoy his lecture. It is well-explained and the content is very straightforward as long as you pay attention. However, for test preparation, if you aim for high A, then you MUST really know your material because he won't just purely ask you definition. Choose your lab partner wisely as you will work with them for the whole semester.
Assignment heavy class but if you pay attention the first week and get the schedule down it becomes clear and you quickly get into a routine. Though it is a lot of content, the way he breaks it up makes it more manageable and digestible. Online Textbook required, use it to study for tests!! In-person lectures can be followed online.
Attend the lectures if you're not good with tech. Manageable workload if done on time. Crucial to find a good lab partner for the semester-long collaboration. The class provides a realistic exposure to tech in business. Tests are challenging, so study all terms and focus on the provided guide. Achieving an A+ is challenging, but an A is attainable.
Dr. Schmitz is a really great professor. This class teaches you so many useful skills for the business world. Lectures are not mandatory, but the collaboration challenge is mandatory. Tests are hard if you don't study or else you will fail. You MUST read the textbook in order to succeed in the class.Take notes on the textbook reading to succeed.
Honestly he was VERY nit picky with errors in excel/ python/ sql/ tableu hw and would take off points for the most minimal error. He posted the entire lecture ahead of time however and it was the same as the one in person class that week and that saved me alot of time. Work was pretty easy tbh
This class requires a lot of work, but it was well structured which made it really easy to stay on task. Every week is laid out with the same type of assignments and it's easy to know when everything is due. I was confused for maybe the first week or two but it definitely got easier. Tests are IN PERSON, attendance is only req for labs.
He is great! attendance is not mandatory during lectures only Labs!! The entire coursework is manageable and very organized all tests are in person!! offers extra credit!
This class was easy to understand but also very work heavy. Lectures are not mandatory to attend since they are also posted on icollege but labs are mandatory. It is crucial to read the textbook and ace the module quizzes in order to get a good grade on the tests that are in person. The TA's in the class were also very helpful.
I didn't really have much contact with Prof Schmitz because my lecture was online and my labs were run by TA's. Class was overall pretty easy. I know the name of the class might sound scary but we had workshops, collab work we did with our group during lab, module quiz, and an individual assignment all through excel, pearson, and Tableau. Not bad.
The name of the class sounds intimidating, and there is a lot of work in the class each week (5-6 hours), but it's the most useful class I've ever taken. I do the lecture work from home and just attend labs. Make sure to use the study guide and do the practice quizzes to study for the exams (they are not hard). Love the class overall though.
lectures are easy and he guides you through workshops. Labs can be difficult and are led by TAs, not him. The tests are hard and the study guides don't match what you need to know. KNOW and UNDERSTAND the Excel functions and what they do for the test. This class is very detail-oriented, so pay close attention to the questions and answer choices.
4 difficult tests, each one in a testing room. What you learn in lecture and lab is only about 1/4 of test material. Everything else, you have to study on your own. 4. assignments each week, lots of reading and studying, study guides are useless. Would not recommend.
The class work itself was not as challenging as others said. Class wasn't mandatory, but labs are. Pick a good lab group or else you're gonna have trouble understanding. Tests are quite difficult and you need to know all the content in that section.
I don't why he such good reviews. His class is so hard, he is a tough grader he takes off points for every little thing its almost impossible to get an A on his assignments. I told him I was struggling in his class, and he didn't seem to care or help me. His test are hard and his tests are nothing like the study guide and his finals are even harder
I loved his class, the lectures attendance was not mandatory and posted online to do from home. It is easy to get an A on almost every assignment and quiz. I got all A's for the assignments but for the tests, i never did well considering i never studied but was able to receive a B! The tests are hard but do well on everything else and you're set!
Part 2 of my last review, the readings are helpful to study and all but I only ever opened the textbook to do the quizzes and never studied. I failed 1/4 exams and received less than a B on 3/4 exams and yet was able to pass this course w/ a B! (got A's on everything els) This is a review to encourage those who are also bad at taking tests like me
He is a good professor, but a tough grader. Every little thing will be graded and there is a lot of homework. The class is enjoyable though and he makes it very accessible and easy to pass if you do his work.
I loved the fact that he had his workshops both in person &online! U dont need to come in person on lecture days if u do the workshops before! It all honestly depends on ur collab group. Make sure u find a good group, v important. Its a make-or-break tbh. There r 3 tests, as long as u actually study u'll do good!! If u barely try u'll fail!
Best professor I have ever had and explains things clearly and this class helped me to see why I am glad i chose CIS as my major and I made many friends along the way! Amazing class 10/10 recommend!!
Professor Schmitz is a good professor. He explains everything and even has videos that you can access of him explaining the work. He does move fast though. So you gotta pay attention and keep up
Great instructor. You can attend the lecture in person or watch the video he provides to complete the workshop. The instructions are clear and easy to follow! While the lectures are not mandatory, the collaboration assignments are. Keep in mind, you'll need to be in a group of three for these assignments, so make sure your partners participate.
Really good professor and explains everything really well(even though he talks slow). Lectures aren't required, but the lab is required, where you work with a group. Stuff can get confusing, but the TAs are really nice and help out. Tests are a bit hard, but as long as you do well on the other assignments you can do really well in the class.
Just a chill guy, the class labs are kinda hard though.
Class wasn't bad, there just isn't as much feedback because of how big the lectures are. I liked his way of teaching though, and he posted lectures online which helped with the work throughout the week. Labs can be tough but he has office hours and if he can't help, the TAs won't mind helping. Would take him again.
Extremely rude to me before the semester even started when I explained a situation, only to find that he's never in class himself. The assignments are pointless- the class is over emphasized like it's the most important thing on earth when an incapable donkey could figure it out. Everyone gets 70s on the tests... so many assignments.
For CIS2010 he has a lecture class that is optional and another collaboration class that is mandatory. The collaboration classes are ran by graduate students. He also has weekly videos that are very helpful.
Probably one of the best professors I have had, as he's super detailed. The class is work intensive, but if you stay on top of the work, it's very doable. The tests take super long to study for, around 15 hours of studying, as the content is really spread out across multiple places, making it hard to capture everything. Overall, great professor.
Very easy explaining and it's a lot of collaboration work in the labs which are mandatory his lectures not really mandatory.
This class isn't hard. There is a lot of work but he lays out exactly what he wants you to do and it doesn't take too much time. The tests def require studying but you have all the tools you need to excel
The assignments aren't hard and he walks you through how to do them. I liked learning the new programs, but sometimes he does too much. The tests feel unnecessarily difficult. I took the lecture online and the lab in person, and the TAs handled most of the lab work. Overall it isn't a bad class.
