Mr. Shiflet is not too animated and kind of serious. Not very motivational for leading a rock band - he's no School of Rock kind of teacher. Impatient with goof-offs. Nice person, though, and a great guitar player and musician - very good with theory. If you want to learn guitar, he's your guy.
Kurt is a shredder. He can rip on the blues, jazz, classical, and even MetaL. He touches on all. He is a cool guy. He knows the guitar inside and out and it is very easy to get a good grade in his class.
Shiflet is a great guitar player in every style. Very approachable and can explain pretty well. The class was easy and he took the pace as fast as the slowest student. Good class.
man hes so hot and I love his voice! he may not be the greatest theory teacher BUT he some times brings his guitar in and then well have fun!:)
This guy rocks! He is totally easy and a blast to talk to about music. He will occasionally stumble around with his words but if you pay close enough attention and ask questions, youll get an A. He explains everything and can answer almost any question you may have. Great teacher.
Good teacher....gives you all the notes you need for tests...easy going guy....fun class...listen to various music...and learn to like styles you never thought you would
Professor Shiflet is a great educator! I went into the class not knowing anything about guitar theory and I came out knowing way more than I wanted to, which is a good thing. He's very helpful and I'm sure he'd help you outside of class as well.
I took this class online. I am about half way done now and his quizzes n discussion boards are easy. Quizes can be taken up to 3 times, and do not blow off discussion board bc it is an easy 5 pts. Take notes and write down quiz questions in notebook and test is okay. Listening examples are the toughest part of an exam. Listen to the music examples!
Little bit unorganized but a decent class
Good class, challenging and useful.
I really enjoyed this class. There are 8 discussions that are mostly opinions on music, you get three tries on the quizzes, and the listening examples are fun to go through. The midterm and final are on campus, but you aren't there for too long and they're in the same format as the quizzes. Great teacher!
Boring monotone voice, however he is a fairly easy "A." Just show up to the extra credit and make sure you listen to the listening examples. He allows three half-sheet notecards to help you on the test so, it's not too bad.
Shiflet is really great. He really knows his material and he can even make it fun at times(he'll bust out his guitar). The course is extremely easy as long as you come to class. His quizzes are straight from his lecture notes, and he let's you use 2 half sheet size note cards. TONS of extra credit options as well. He wants everyone to get an A.
very boring lectures but take notes, they come in handy for tests. don't need to read the book. some cool video footage though.
Cool guy. Monotone voice. DONT miss any quizzes, because he will NOT let you make them up. Rater before says a ton of extra credit, but he actually only offers TWO options. And they're not worth many points. Easy A if you just do all of the work. For a lame class, he really should let people make up quizzes though!
i took the online world music class.all the quizes r open notes.the tough part is memorizing the different names of songs and singers all the quizes r multiple attempts so f u screw up once u can nail it de nxt time with ya book rite nfront of u..its easy A.u must b a really dumbass not 2 get an A n dis class.the dude even lets u bring notes during
Boring class, monotone professor. Tests are easy if you come prepared with note cards. Didn't actually learn very much, besides the small selection of listening examples. A lot more could be done to make the class more interesting, and he comes to class unprepared often. Definitely an easy A.
I took the online music class. The quizes were easy because you could take it as many times as you wanted to get an "A". The exams were a little but harder because you needed to identfy certain music but if you take good notes you will pass with an "A". Allows you too use notes on the exams. Cool teacher.
Kurt is an awesome guy once you get to know him on a more personal level and you've established trust in each other. There is a definitely a lot of democracy in this class; and by that I mean he doesn't monopolize the class. He's also a joy to perform with, and man can he shred! I recommend this class to anyone who loves playing music!
At first I wished he was more energetic..Like the voice like the others said. Then I grew to love him, he's a funny guy and a really talented musician. He just doesn't jump around like a spring chicken.
Took this class over summer it was a lot of work since you have to answer all the chapter questions and some weeks there were 5 chapters but overall an easy class as long as you keep up. Listening questions on the quizzes/tests were a little hard but nothing that wasn't posted in the lectures.
He makes himself completely unavailable to his students. He complains about being too busy and excuses himself from grading on time but gives absolutely no leeway to you. He has extremely trivial rules and the course is straight from the book. I'm not LEARNING anything! The worst part--I love music and he's stripping all the joy from it!
I found this class to be very informative and allot of fun. Professor Shiflet?s instructions are very clear and his syllabus tells you exactly what is expected from the very first class. There was never a time I was turned away or wasn?t attended to when I didn?t understand. Great class, awesome instructor!
i liked his class very much. he is a very good teacher he is easy and if you listen to the music and do the work the tests are easy.i recommend his class a lot
Online class, not difficult if you spend the required amount of time with the listening samples and read the lecture notes and textbook. However, there's zero interaction with the professor; homework is just typing out the end-of-chapter review questions and regurgitating the answers from the text. Online quizzes/tests are open book/open notes.
EASY "A"!!! He seems boring at first, but you kinda get used to him. He's also funny at times, and he Never gives homework. Seriously, I never once opened the book! I only went off of what he lectured about and still got an "A". He also lets you use a couple note-cards on every test, which are ALL multiple choice.
Sometimes, his lectures were unorganized & were hard to follow. But he kept the class interesting. Very passionate about music. Learned alot & got to hear some great music!! Extra credit available. Go to class, take Really Good Notes & you'll pass. Never even have to open the book. =]
Great instructor if u want to learn how to play guitar I learned slot in his class and is very helpful
Great instructor if u want to learn how to play guitar I learned slot in his class and is very helpful
Online class was good. Take notes on audio clips so you remember what they are and sound like during test. You are allowed to take each test 2x, keeping the highest score. Be sure to do all the discussion assignment- easy and quick. Offers extra credit towards end of semester.
This class was very easy for me because I play the guitar. I thought it was boring at times, but it was an easy A. He's really good and pretty chill.
taking his 6 week american popular music online class. its very easy. I recommend it. shiflet isnt very helpful, altho, u really dont need him. but this was my 1st online class, and i emailed him with a few ?'s, pretty much he didnt giv me the time of day. not helpful @ all. i figured it out myself!
HE IS AMAZING AT MUSIC. :) I love this dude. He is funny too. Take CME! and his world and pop class is fun too, you'll learn a lot! :D Look him up on YOUTUBE he plays in a band! :) so awesome. !! Thank you for teaching at SCC!
OMG, what can I say! This teacher is the absolute BEST. I learned more about people, culture, music, & the world as a whole than any other class I've taken. There's a lot of info & you'll need to practice and continuously study the music, but he gives you 2 weeks to study and turn in hw.What you study is exactly whats on the test. TAKE HIM!!!
Kurt Shiflet is so laid back and a great professor. I had no interest in this class, took it because of the GE requirement, but came out with some real appreciation for world music and different cultures around the world. Do the homework and you will be fine. I didn't study for a single test and got a B in the class.
HE IS AWESOME! He is very helpful and very cool. Not a dorky teacher, boring teacher etc. His tests are funny, he will throw in little funny answers that throw you off, but make you crack up. Love it. If you show up, care and work hard, do your homework and READ HIS SYLLABUS! He hates it if you don't dude, then you will love his classes! :)
AMAZING MUSICIAN! HE PLAYS IN A STEELY DAN TRIBUTE BAND! Called Steelin'Dan. They are awesome. He is smokin' on his Gee-Tar! :) One of the best bands of sacramento! won awards! He is awesome! :D
Oh my goodness, this class SUCKED. Basically the quizzes are matching games- listen to a piece of music and tell me the name of the musician?! Really? How do we learn anything from that? No contact with instructor- he does not ever answer emails. Disappointing class- got a C with max effort.
Shiflet, is by far a very laid-back professor. If you failed this class or received a low grade then you really, REALLY did not put in as much effort as you claim. If you do the homework, take notes (open notes on quizzes) & took advantage of open note cards for tests then there is NO WAY you can fail this class...
He's pretty laid-back and really nice. It's a pretty straight-forward class. As long as you read and do your homework, it's an easy A. I learned a lot about other cultures and their music.
Took his World music 330 online summer 6 week course. There are a total of about 8 homework assignment, 6 questions per assignment. They are critical thinking and the book is needed. There is also a weekly quiz, midterm and final. I honestly don't see how someone could not get an A if they do the work, extra credit and actually invest some time!
He is great professor. Know what he is doing....
Kurt is a great teacher! Pretty funny guy, class is interesting. Tests are easy as long as you come to class & take notes. There are small writing assignments throughout the semest. based on some musical topic or musician - very easy w/ moderate effort. Some extra credit opportunities. Overall - nice teacher, easy & fun class, easy A. Just show up!
He's cool.
This class is super easy just pay attention to due dates and you'll do awesome!
I took the "Popular Electric Guitar Styles" class with Kurt Shifflet in Fall 2012. Kurt is a great teacher, and extremely laid back. He is very knowledgeable on the subject of playing the guitar. He has much experience under his belt, so you're definitely learning from a professional! I highly recommend him.
Maybe the easiest class I will take in college..that doesn't mean it wasn't a lot of work. Lots and lots of HW..but an easy A if you just do all the work. 2 EC assignments. Online quizzes can be challenging at points. recommended!
Ridiculous easy class. He knows it too, so don't expect a lot of help from him. Homework is really time consuming, but it is very easy. Just make sure you are organized enough to know when homework/quizzes are due. Oh and make sure you have Shazam!
Surprisingly interesting class. LOTS of textbook homework (took the 6wk summer class). Weekly quizzes with textbook questions and audio examples. Plenty of extra credit opportunities. Shiflet does not like emails w/ questions that can be answered by reading syllabus/notes. Do the work, and you will pass, AND learn a lot about the history of music.
Kurt is awesome. Hes pretty laid back. His powerpoints are easy to follow. He even offers extra credit! Take good notes and really make sure to listen to the listening examples those are key during exams.
This class was very interesting. There are a lot of hw questions, but they are in two week blocks, there are like twenty one chapters total of review questions, bi-weekly quizzes, discussions, and two exams. Offers extra credit, but you definitely have to put the work in to get an A. I took MUFHL 330 and 309, and 309 is much more work.
Simple: he's pretty laid back. The class is very easy, especially if you're in love with music like I am. Read your book, take notes, don't miss class, and focus. He appreciates studenets who put in hard work, and he recognizes that. I recommend him in a heart beat. I'm taking him in 330 this summer. He also likes to joke a lot..funny,easy,and fun.
This was such an awesome and cool class to take for general ed. It is an easy A as long as you put in the work and pay attention to the deadlines. The homework assignments from the book were pretty lengthy but very simple. Discussion boards are easy points and the quizes are straight out of the book. No reason not to pass this class.
Kurt offers clear instruction, is laid back and doesnt take himself too seriously. It wasnt easy at first but my playing improved with practice and time. You must be personally motivated to succeed in this class. Although hes cool, he doesnt have patience if you dont practice. Overall, I really enjoyed the class and would take it again.
The homework takes a while, but it's easy if you read the book. Make sure you do the listening before the quizzes.
Kurt was a nice guy, and had a sense of humor. As far as the class goes, it was sort of boring. If you arent majoring in music, or arent into instruments and chord patterns, this isnt the class for you. SUPER EASY A though. Show up, listen to the listening examples, do the very few assignments that are assigned, and you will pass.
I only took this class to get credits so I wasn't too interested in the subject but overall it was a pretty cool class. Kinda boring, but it was a super easy A, didn't even buy the textbook. Just do the assignments, take notes in class, and the tests are a breeze. Laid back guy, recommend taking him if you like the class/subject.
I took this class just to satisfy my arts/humanities requirement. Easy A! He's so chill and funny and makes the material enjoyable. Listened to cool music and learned about legends in music history. Really recommend taking him. You can use two 5 x 8 notecards on each test and they're so easy! All assignments are easy, you just have to do them.
He is so awesome! I can't believe how easy this class was. Definitely take if you're trying to get in a GE. I plan on taking world music with him as well.
On-line summer class. Helps to be interested in music history. Textbook needed for exams; active music listening required. Very structured and clear grading criteria. Be hyper-aware of deadlines if taking this accelerated class. Multiple quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final, 5 essays (2-3 pg.) Easy A if you study, read the material and do the work.
Fair. Expectations upfront
Although some class days were boring because the lectures were heavy, Prof. Shiflet kept the class alive with his jokes and stories. Tests were easy to pass since notes could be used. There were short summaries (2 pgs) we had to type every week or so. Overall, I enjoyed the class, and now, I listen to more varieties of music.
Was sometimes a bit unorganized but a really hilarious and passionate professor. Grading was clear and most tests students were able to create notecards. Although, test material is presented IN CLASS so do not skip.
Solid Choice for a music prof. Clearly passionate about the subject and helping students succeed,
He usual takes roll every now and then does not. Very fair grading.
I took his online MUFHL 330 class and it was quite easy. I would recommend using an e-book rather than a physical book because it is easier to look certain terms up. The assignments were due every two weeks and were not that much work. The examples include some listening which is one of the most important parts of the class.
Take his online MUFHL 309!! It was the easiest class! You wont regret it. You have three tests for the whole semester, a handful of quizzes and discussions, and a couple of "essays".
I would take this professor again because his class was very straightforward and I appreciated this. He assigned papers every few weeks and these weren't too hard to complete as long as you look at the lecture notes and do a little outside research. I would take his course again in a heartbeat, great professor overall!
Professor Shiftlet assigned papers frequently, however, a lot of times he would give sources to help you. A little research on your own will help too.
Great Guitar instructor very patient with his students, funny keeps it light, selfless teacher encouraging and he wants to see his students succeed and be confident in their abilities. Breaks down music theory well. Great environment for learning
Very approachable, funny, wants his students to feel comfortable and is understanding makes time for each and every student if they are struggling or have questions
Took guitar in the middle of the pandemic, Kurt made the transition as smooth as possible and was helpful with lessons and created a forum for us as well. He gave us really fun but challenging music pieces but in a non intimidating way. Going to take the next level guitar class, he is a great instructor in person and online
Took this class as an elective and for general education requirement, but class was really easy. You can get the textbook online.
I love this class because the way professor shiflet structures it. It's so easy to follow along. Theres a quiz that's bi-weekly, a weekly discussion board and a 2-3 page summary that's fairly easy. All the assignments are short and to the point so there's nothing to be confused about.
The class is graded of quizzes and and homework, the homework can be found on google easily, and the quizzes are questions straight out of the notes or google. you can listen to the notes while you take the quiz so thats super helpful as well. doesn't accept any late work at all and doesn't answer emails so i consider him a weirdo. but super easy
I hated his quizzes. I'd google the answers to certain questions after the fact, and found that the factually correct answers weren't options on the quiz. I'd cross reference this with the book and multiple other sources. Essentially, this guy's quizzing you on information that's all completely bogus. Other than this, he was an ok teacher.
Kurt Shiflet isn't a bad prof, but definitely not the best online. It's not too hard, but he gives papers that are due bi-weekly. Papers can take some time to do especially if you're busy with other classes, lots of busy work. Make sure to prepare for tests & quizzes, you have to read the textbook a lot. Take him for a relatively easy A.
Kurt always keeps the class interesting and World Music is definitely eye opening. I found myself listening to new music that I didn't realize I would like and probably wouldn't have given a chance prior. It's definitely enlightening the significance of cultural diversity and the role music plays. Definitely a must for a Music Major
An average professor with homework, papers, and quizzes.
He is very hands-off with his online class. He assigns textbook readings, listening examples, and biweekly quizzes. Pretty straightforward, easy A. I wish he was a bit more engaging, maybe with more involved discussions or any lecture videos. Also the assigned textbook is nearly 20 years old. Fine if you are good at learning a course by yourself.
As a Music Enthusiast, I thought this would be a great class to bring my passion for music. This class was so helpful, easy layout, and overall great at first. But when it came down to helping a struggling student that reached out personally about an incident, the proof of the incident was ALL THAT MATTERED. So I don't recommend, F.
Not very engaging but the class is very straight forward and a relatively easy A. He accepts no late work, allows few extra credit essay assignments, has a mid-term/final, & requires a lot of reading to be done, in order to do well on quizzes. Had to complete 5 bi-weekly essays throughout the semester and 7 pretty easy discussion assignments.
Although this professor was not engaging at all, that didn't bother me. Most of the work are based off of the textbook where you read and will be given a chapter test on it. There are a few essays where you have to watch documentary and write an essay on. Other than that, this class was pretty easy and chill in my opinion.
He is caring, and gives TONS of extra credit (equivalent of missing a whole midterm). Class is very dull because the only content consists of reading chapter after chapter (with listening examples too). He is very clear about his expectations, but due to the monotony, the class felt grueling. The class would've been much better in-person.
His online class was pretty simple, he stuck to his syllabus and it wasn't hard as long as you don't wait until the last minute, you get a quiz on the unit you are and you have to write essays on each genre. He isn't a hard grader on the quality of your essays as long as you meet all the requirements he wants in the essay. He also gives EC
Very easy class to pass, not a tough grader as long as you follow the instructions given. Pretty hands off with the online class
Considering this is a music history class and taken to meet IGETC, it was fairly difficult. There is SO MUCH reading, we pretty much read the entire textbook. Unless you are genuinely interested in music history, this class is such a pain. The Essays are long and dreadful and you have to watch 2-hour long docum. The quizzes aren't easy either.
Great professor with clearly marked assignments. Although this class is relatively monotonous, it doesn't bother me because the content is relatively interesting and easy to get 100% in.
I took Professor Shiflet's World Music Class in the spring at SCC. Although this class did involve monotonous reading, biweekly quizzes, responding to questions, and watching three documentaries to write papers on them, it was all graded very lightly and interesting. As long as you do all of your work on time, Prof. Shiflet will give you an A.
there's not a lot of instruction, but the expectation of a really good result. we need better people involved and stricter guidelines on what is and is not allowed. you gotta speak up and get your ideas out there other than that he's a great guy just this class needs some development.
Minimal instruction from prof S, but nothing too complex that you can't make sense of. Had little to no contact w/ prof. Book is fairly cheap on Amazon. 3 assignments every 2 week: Discussion post, CH quizzes, and Essay. Does not give EC easy and NO late policy. Had little to no contact w/ prof. Mid-Term and Final are accumulated from CH quizzes.
Lots of reading in this class. The good thing is you only have a few assignments and a quiz due every two weeks. Professor is pretty hands off and good luck getting a response when emailing him. I really enjoyed learning about different music thru the world. Great online class.
Very cool class if you have any type of interest in music. Prof. Shiflet pretty often gets sidetracked during class, but his stories are usually interesting and somehow related. Notetaking can be a bit of a struggle if you don't pay attention as he doesn't write much during lecture. There are multiple opportunities for extra credit as well.
Took this class as my first dual enrollment class and I had a nice experience! The grading and expectations are very clear and assignments as well. I took it over the summer but was able to finish the weeks work in a couple days! Would recommend this class!
Doesn't give you emergency passes. Be ready to still finish homework even if you're at someone important's funeral cause that's what i've been through. Doesn't care and have zero compassion, do not take him! You've been warned
Class was not hard, however if you miss two or more assignments, either been weekly assignments, quizes, or discussion posts, he will drop you from the class. While they are not hard, it seems a bit excessive for a class that is intro level. If you aren't taking a lot of units/are good with work managments its good, but if not, do not take.
Lots of reading and writing. Overall, the material was fine as long as you read the chapter. However, there is an essay about every two weeks.
Most of the assignments involved reading textbook and then regurgitating knowledge onto quiz, he had one recorded lecture and the rest was not taught by him, super boring overall and he didn't put any effort into grading essays.
