Kushlani is a really cool lady. Her class discussions are the best and the movies you watch are really interesting. WAY to much text readings, you are quized about them at beggining of each class. she grades really hard on her outside assignments. overall it was a good class.
This class was interesting at times, but Kushlani says that shes open to everyones opinion but if you dont agree with her opinion then your wrong! she grades harshly and she makes you talk even ifyou not comfotable talking about a cetain subject. And we hardly talked about women it was all about minority groups.I wouldnt recommend her
I enjoyed this class. Very insightful. Probably wouldn't have liked it if this teacher wasn't as passionate about the subject.
This lady appeared nice on the outside but was the woman's studies equal to the "soup nazi". She really needed to prepare better for her classes and study the material so at least she knows what she's teaching! A terrible class. I would not wish it on the most devout feminist.
Kushlani is very enthusiastic about the subject she is teaching. She is a harsh grader. There is SO MUCH READING to do, which she doesnt even end up lecturing on. She is very disorganized and the class has little structure. I wouldnt recommend taking this class. I wouldnt take it ever again.
this teacher reminds me of one of my high school teachers alot of buzy work. i'm not really learn anything.
Kushlani is really passionate, but she can be really rude at times. She says your opinion matters but a lot of the time I found she wouldnt pick me to talk, she was just talk the entire time. A lot of reading, the quizzes aren't hard.
Wonderful teacher! A little vague but means well. Very understanding, helpful and passionate. Easy class and if you have the slightest interest in the material, you're likely to pass.
Very good teacher. Class was always interesting, and it raised awareness about topics people usually ignore. There is some book work, but it is very informative. I am going to take her next class. I would reccomend this class to everyone!
This teacher is rude and very condescending toward her students. She is also vindictive and she does not answer student emails which when teaching an online class you need to be. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS TEACHER TOANYONE
I dropped this class because the teacher was totally unprepared and she really doesn't care about her students and she will berate you in a flash. Ann Snyder is awesome! Take her for ALL your WS courses.
kushlani always presents an interesting class that covers some disturbing facts. if you read the assignment you will do fine. i am looking forward to her classes
Kushlani is a terrible instructor, she is completely biased, self-righteous, and will grade you down dramatically depending on if she likes you or not. She also grades down on papers if you use a college vocabulary. Dont be too smart! Youll be graded down for intelligence!
This is the worst teacher I have ever taken, online class, she gives due dates and doesn't even have the material ready. Her comments are rude and hurtful and not constructive, whatsoever. Avoid at all costs!
HORRIBLE prof. Condescending, rude, jugemental, degrading. Shoots down ideas not matching her own. Consistently picks on & embarrasses the same students. Unprepared & I never know if what she's teaching is fact or her opinion. Boat loads of unnecessary reading for each class, all reiterating the same info we never use. Wouldn't recommend her!
The class was fairly interesting. I thought Kushlani really had passion for the topics. We talked a lot about minorities, about 1/2 the time was on women. The readings were tedious. Assignments really demanded you have great notes, or a photographic memory. Take notes. Take notes. That's the best advice I can give you for this class.
Kushlani is very passionate about her subject, and encourages you to be also. Some students complained about her, I do not see how. Only take this class if you have an OPEN MIND. Take very good notes on the readings, and be prepared to discuss with classmates. Also you need to show up to class.
I put of taking this class for years because I was afraid I would hate it. Kushlani has such a passion for this field of study that it has kept me inspired and wanting to do all the reading and writing papers. The best thing about Kushlani is, she is REAL! This class is not a bird-course, if you are not there to learn, dont bother showing up.
Rudest most judgmental prof I've ever met! She doesn't like your opinions? Watch out! If you want to take a womens class, just know this is a minorities class not womens. Readings were all the same. Quizzes & tests were easy if you studied. The papers were easy if you payed attention. But easy or not, I'm not gonna be harassed for my own beliefs!
Kushlani is a great teacher. She really worked with me to get my understanding of the subject to a good level. every session there is a mini quiz on the assigned reading. Her projects and papers really speak to the subject and were fun to do, especially the media project.
Kushlani is an awesome teacher. I enjoy her class, she gives interesting examples from different parts of the world for better understandings. She knows what she is talking about. If you want to learn, take her class.
there were unclear lines that she did not want crossed durring discussion, there was a huge amount of reading to be done that she said she would not even want to do (and i doubt she has) and in my oppinion treats feminism like a religion and wants to force others to see if her way.
This was an overall easy class. She is strict and does not like distractions or interruptions!!! There is a lot of reading but not too much homework. She is pretty easygoing. The tests are easy!
She is a great teacher. You learn alot and she makes it prett interesting. Cannot slack off in this class because there are daily quizes. The papers are really easy and she givespretty good explanations. She does not like distrations but if you are not a distration and do your work you will not have any problems. I highly recommend her!
In the online class she doesn't give A's grades for accomplishing everything she asks on the forums or assignments. She says that 100% grades are for those who do extra. She also has about a page long list of article and blog reading you have to do each week for a weekly test thats about 10 pts then there's a few 100pt assignments.
This class opened my eyes to so many issues I have overlooked. This class was fun, interesting, and most of all challenging. If you go above and beyond you can count on an A. Kushlani is very clear as to what her expectations are and is always willing to help. There is a lot of reading, but worth it you learn so much. I will take Kushlani again!
I was really interested in taking this class. I thought that a 3 credit class would be somewhat hard especially online, but when you have to read at least 7 articles plus chapter reading and the 3-4 page forum postings you get burnt out. She seems like a great teacher but just needs to ease up on the assgned readings and other homework.
Yes it was a summer class but seriously! She only lets you use the assigned readings to create essays. She is so strict and ridiculous to communicate with. She requires you to use a format to speak to her. I emailed her like I normally would and she only replied that I need to use her format. Yes almighty god Desoyza..queen of the world.
I am an A student, so following Kushlani's syllabus was not problem nor was e-mailing her with the proper subject heading. She is an amazing teacher who really cares about her students and wants you to learn. She does provide a lot of work, but its necessary to really grasp all of the concepts. I have had her for two quarters and love her!!!!!!!
Women's Studies is actually a very easy class. Kushlani however is "okay." She's intimidating, she is mean and it's hard for me to approach her when I need help but take as many notes as you can and you will be fine, she's not too hard to deal with.
Pretty awesome teacher. Some think she's strict, but she just doesn't like to be talked over. I plan to take other classes with her. Awesome lady.
I think she is a great instructor, very well prepared. Expects a lot but gives a lot as well. She is very socially conscious and attempts to instill that in her students, although some do not appreciate it -- their loss!
She never let you say your opinions, she was rude and made us watch pointless movies. I hope I never have her again.
Didn't appreciate her attitude. For somebody who is teaching a subject about respect, she doesn't show it very well. Likes to listen to herself talk but doesn't always listen to what students may have to say. You might get a good grade in the class but expect to be shot down if you voice an opinion or ask a "stupid" question. Difficult to approach.
there was a lot of reading but overall it related to the concepts studied, this class was an eye opener, whether you liked listening to her or not, the issues still stand. great class!
She assigns an outrageous amount of reading and then you have to basically memorize minute details in order to get an A on the quiz. I'm a 4.0 student and expect to only earn a C in this class. Every 5 days at least 100 pgs to read + multiple videos to watch and activities to do that are extremely time consuming. Do not recommend.
Do NOT take a class from this Kushlani! You have a quiz everyday on the homework readings that cannot be made up if your absent. You will have at least 6-8 hours of reading and taking notes per week, not including studying or writing the papers assigned for this class! This class is more work than every other 5 credit class I've taken at Clark!
she knows the material and I enjoyed her lectures because I found the material very interesting, but she was rude and disrespectful. I took a 5 credit sociology class last quarter and Desoyza, teaching a 3 credit woman studies class, gave me 2x as much homework. dont take a class from her. she sets you up to fail don't take a class from this women
Such a great class to sit in. She grabs your attention, the class is never dry. So easy to stay awake and pay attention.
This class requires a lot of homework. There is a lot of reading and a quiz at he beginning of each class. She is very biased and doesn't accept of other opinions very well. However, if you follow the syllabus, and work hard it is possible to get an A.
Do not be afraid of all the homework she assigns the first 2 weeks!!! It get's easier. However it is a very challenging yet thought-provoking class. If you are willing to work hard, you will receive a fair grade. The teacher can sometimes be arrogant and politically-incorrect but you don't have to agree with her (I disagreed with %50+)
I took WS 101 and ENGL& 102 as a learning community class and enjoyed it. The workload is scary and vast, but you learn so much in those 10 weeks. I recommend Kushlani to my friends and if I am able to I will take another class of hers.
This is a feminist class. Kushlani seSoyza, does not give common professional respect. She continually ignored, would not reply to emails. As other students remarked, your "opinion " is not appreciated. Expect to be overloaded, overworked. She does not give A's. I would not recommend to anyone
This is my second class with Kushlani, and she is absolutely amazing. I understand that she gives a lot of work, but I honestly did not expect any less from a college course. There are 4 major writing assignments, weekly quizzes, and weekly discussions. I would take another class taught by Kushlani again.
Expect her to compare you to other students by telling you how they did better, after providing a lack of proper information for a required post. Not helpful at all and provides the student with absolutely no help when requested. Unless you want to fail the last class you need to graduate, don't take this class with this instructor.
This class was extremely difficult for a 3-credit class. The teacher was unresponsive, and graded really harshly. I put in more than 12 hours a week to pass this class and barely made it out with a B. It is treated more like a 5 credit class. I would not recommend this teacher unless you have a spare 15 hours a week for 3-credits.
She is a fantastic teacher, a natural leader. Do not take her class just for fun because it's pretty extreme amount of work. However it is not hard if you are doing the reading and following directions, just time consuming. Her personality makes it totally worth it, she is smart, and on her A game. Great teacher and very interesting class!
She is a very hard grader, and each extra credit response is a lot of work and only worth 0.3% .
She is a tough grader. I have not received full credit on any discussions or assignments. Discussion posts are long , you need in text citations, word count and works cited, basically you are writing an essay. Same goes for responses. Each week there is about 40 pages of reading. Extra credit is a lot of work and only worth 0.3%.
Kushlani is a really nice and helpful instructor. Women's studies was an amazing course, I learned so much from the class and really enjoyed the way she taught her online class. We had no textbook and read articles that related to everyday life instead of dry material from a book. You must do the work, read and watch everything she assigns.
I learned so much in this class and really appreciate the fact that she's a tough grader, made me work even harder to perfect my analyses and discussions. There are a lot of interesting readings which are all relevant to the topic and to our current society. Definitely recommend taking this class, de Soyza is an amazing educator!
Kushlani is funny, and a good teacher, sometimes sarcastic. She grades pretty tough on the two short papers you have to do tho. You also have a lot of reading to do each week if you want to pass the weekly quizzes. She shows a lot of in-class movies that relate to what you study which were awesome. I recommend her, her and her class was great.
As a guy who took Women's Studies, I'd say this class went smoothly. Kushlani is upbeat and knows what she is talking about. That being said, I feel like she holds some bias, and I did not agree with everything she tried to prove. She doesn't force anything on you though. Follow her directions exactly or your grade will suffer like my friend's did!
Assigned a wide variety of reading and videos which made things more interesting, thank goodness because the text was horrible. Each week there was reading/watching, a short quiz and a writing assignment which required citations and often a discussion comment was required. Three big assignments for the class with plenty of time to work on them.
Professor De Soyza is well versed in the material she is teaching. If you are looking for an easy A, her class is not for you. However, she does give a lot of opportunities to make up bad grades, and drop low quiz scores. She is very easy to communicate with, and what she expects for you is made clear. I highly recommend her as an instructor.
She was very difficult - worked my butt off and wasn't able to get full credit on any assignment. Toward the end of the class she starts to get fair and the harsh grading is lessened.
Not good about responding to messages promptly. Pretty good otherwise. Easy class if you put in some effort. Substantial amount of weekly readings and videos. Discussion and quizzes every week. would take again
I absolutely love this course! Kushlani is very knowledgeable about the material and supplements the reading with lots of videos for you to watch. Discussion every week was interesting, and got students engaged. Nothing too difficult, a couple papers I think. Everyone should take WS, and kushalni was a great prof to learn from!! I recommend her.
My fault I failed. I hated the class though. Made it sound like it was a women's culture class. It was actually be a feminist and if you have different views you're in trouble.
Amazing professor with a very sincere and big heart. Knows what she's talking about and explains things very thoroughly. You can tell she cares about her students and is well respected. Class itself is fun and although there is a heavy workload it's worth taking. Try not to miss class and try to participate in class discussions (:
Lots of extra credit opportunities with this class! This class has impacted me the most of any class I have ever taken. This class is absolutely amazing! Kushlani does a great job of explaining everything and is good about respecting others beliefs when the material may conflict with them.
Kushlani is an incredibly knowledgeable professor. I strongly recommend attending every day, so you get the most out of the class. Feminist theory can be a hard topic to teach without displaying your own bias, but I felt that she did so well.
I wasn't looking forward to this class because I have very solid views about feminism and women. While her opinions weren't shoved down my throat, I definitely saw a trend in her lectures that made me sick of the class. There's a ton of reading online lectures every class; she wasn't bad, but if I could go back, I probably wouldn't've taken it.
I've taken three classes from Kushlani, and she was great before she got tenure. Now, she talks about things that don't matter, very froofy. We watched Netflix and Pepsi commercials. If you're into that sort of thing, great, but don't take her if you actually want to learn something. She's very critical, and picks favorites.
DeSoyza was very informative and super cool but her class is sometimes a tough. The videos she shows made me sick and from what I heard from other students, they agree. Super easy tests if you know how to find the control find button on the 33 pages of mandatory every class readings.
Great class. Tons of reading, has quizzes after every reading-- which is daily. Reading is from articles and videos she find, not textbooks. Listen to her, but she does have her own biases. Class can be eye opening.
I absolutely loved professor Kushlani, I loved her lectures, she would always encourage us to think about things in a different way and I loved that. She was a little tough on grading, but she gave really awesome detailed feedback. lots of reading but not too difficult. A quiz for every class based on the readings, the 3 essays were a little hard.
Kushlani is an amazing teacher, honestly the best professor Ive ever had at Clark. Ive taken two of her classes and loved them both! While her classes are definitely not easy As, if you show up and you do the work, you shouldnt have any trouble getting a good grade. She makes all of the concepts clear and easy to understand.
Took this as an online class, had to monitor every grade she entered in the grade book because she gave me incorrect grades multiple times. Gave me an F on a huge assignment bringing from an A to paling the class. I emailed her multiple times didn't respond for a week so i went into Clark and had to have the student ambassador handle it.
Kushlani was my professor for Women Studies 101 last year. She is amazing at lectures and describes everything to a T, very clear and is always there to answer your questions- she is funny and always has us in groups which lets you get to know other classmates when doing assignments. She grades tough but only if you dont try your best. Easy A!
Show up to class. Not because you need the lectures, but because Kush is a riot. Great prof
Kushlani is nice and personable. She's a tough grader when it comes to discussions, and her feedback is vague so it's hard to meet the specific criteria. You'll probably lose points even if your post is eloquent, which is ironic because she isn't the most well spoken professor I've had by a long shot. If you take her, be ready to work for that A.
Kushlani canceled her class a lot so be prepared. She is very opinionated but this class was a game changer. She forgot to post assignments on various occasions. Seemed a bit unorganized. But she is funny. I felt there was a lot of stuff we didn't actually cover in class.
Kushlani was a pretty awesome prof. She always made us laugh, and her lectures were super interesting. Some of the videos we watched in class were hard to watch, but she always gave us a warning before any hard spots. We didn't use a textbook, but we had several online readings and a test before the start of each class. She had extra credit.
I took this course online and expected it to be a little more rigorous than in person. I did not expect to not know if I was going to pass or not because she doesn't grade things for weeks. She also consistently doesn't have the modules unlocked or completed for the week. No assignment sheet is given so you don't really know what to expect.
Kushlani was a really kind and intelligent professor. The weekly assignments were not very difficult or lengthy; just lots of online readings. This class taught me so many great things and I highly recommend her. My only negative is that she was slow on grading and it made it difficult to see my class progress.
Kushlani was really understanding of everyone's circumstances this quarter (COVID-19 and global protests about police brutality). Each week consisted of readings/videos, a quiz, and a discussion post and there were 2 longer writing assignments throughout the quarter. Kushlani really cares about her students.
I wish I never took this class. Kushlani is nice, but she grades WAY too hard and gives way too much reading. Definitely choose another teacher.
Professor De Soyza creates an organized 1 page module every week where you are listed the required readings and videos to watch to prepare you for one weekly discussion post (and respond to another student) as well as a quiz. She is flexible with due dates and class is very interesting and worth the work you will not be disappointed in this class!
This is one of my favorite classes I've taken. Unlike most professors I know, Kushlani is very flexible with due dates if you communicate with her. There aren't too many assignments in this class, and the ones you do have are pretty straight forward. A discussion and quiz every week with the lecture and other materials, and three essays throughout.
I had a really good time taking women's studies with her. I'm doing running start, so this was one of my first college classes. I felt like there was nothing unfair about her grading or amount of coursework. I ended up doing really well and leaving the class with super impactful knowledge.
Prof is nice, but... expectations for assignments were inconsistent and scattered. Used lesson plans from different semesters and didn't update ANYTHING in the post. Were instructions that were for assignments that weren't in the current lesson plans. Depending on what part of canvas you're reading, there were different assignment instructions
Her class literally consists of reading random Op-Ed articles (seriously) and then taking easy quizzes on them. Sometimes she is so lazy with the class she flat out gives you the answers. Any written work is also easy and she often will grade it 6 weeks later. It's an easy class but the professor is a rambling mad-women.
There are some readings, a discussion post, and a quiz every week; replies for discussion are rarely required (but you get extra credit if you do them). Two 750-1000 word essays throughout the quarter. Flexible with due dates! Does take a long time to grade things though. Still, I learned a lot and would take her again!
De Soyza was friendly and understanding, but the actual subject was.. eh. Nearly all of the material was based on opinions but passed off as fact, and it was kinda weird answering quiz questions where the "right answer" is just the p.c. *opinion*. De Soyza was an alright prof overall, tho. Usually just 1-2 assignments weekly. A few papers as well.
This is the 2nd class I've taken with this professor. Each week you read a couple articles, a chapter in the textbook (she provides for you), a lecture, take 1 test & 1 discussion. One week they didn't assign anything so we could finish our midterm, then gave us another week on top of that. May take a while to respond and grade though.
I feel like she was a super understanding professor! I enjoyed her in-class lectures and didn't bore me out. We in the beginning had actual quizzes but were turned into discussion quizzes instead of actual ones. We had a couple of articles to read before each class to understand what was going to be talked about in class. I would recommend her!
Professor de Soyza is a fantastic and realistic professor. She does a great job of realizing what her students do or don't need, and how far they may or may not be willing to go. She is a fantastic professor and I highly recommend her classes.
Takes forever to grade. Very strong opinionated. Assignments are scattered and not very organized.
I absolutely loved Professor de Soyza. She covered a lot of topics regarding feminism. This class covers more than just women's studies. We went over media and everyday life portrayal regarding sexism and racism and homophobia. I think everyone should take this class, it's very educational. Homework load isn't too bad, lots of short readings.
Took de Souza in 2018, felt a review was needed. As a male leftist student of color, I felt like I may be able to learn a lot from this course, but instead she ostracized me publicly to the class. When I lost participation points (despite trying to participate), she claimed I was being inappropriate. Made me reconsider college completely. Thanks dS
Very easy class got a 100% just do the weekly discussion and easy final project
Professor was really nice, but topics/readings were biased and one sided. Not a hard class. Assignments weren't very difficult.
Underrated.
