Very interesting class. A quiz after each section based on class lectures, which are fun to go to. Easy class if you go and take notes. There's a final and term paper. I feel like I learned a LOT about religions around the world (their histories, practices, etc.) Probably too easy for relig. majors.
Great teacher! His lectures are very intersting and you learn a lot. He made learning about religion a lot of fun. Taking his class also gave me whole new outlook about life. Take his class...it's worth it!
The best teacher ever. He is nice, funny and caring. I loved going to his classes. ALl you need is to take notes and go to class and I guarantee you will at least get a B.
he made philosophy seem so interesting..and i was able to pull off a B+ in that class. what does that tell you?? he's awesome :) very reserved guy and understanding. just express interest in philosophy and he'll love you!
Dupen is a Kerouac mountain-top poet, knowledgable and sensitive to each subject and student. Interesting, wonderful lectures, this professor is not to be passed up for any person interested in scratching surface of problem of humanity, philosophy, religions, man's purpose. Thoughtful, great class.
Great and caring teacher.
Very understanding teacher, textbook interesting and fit well with subject, great class
His lectures are really interesting. He grades farely. He doesn't take attendance, but his quizzes are based on lecture. You don't really need to read the book.
The best teacher I have ever had. Made the subject matter interesting without imbedding it with his own opinions. He posed the philosophical questions in such a perfect way that the only way to understand them was to think about them ourselves. Fantastic class, and I would recommend this teacher and class to anyone.
Great Teacher, explains philosophy perfectly. Grades are basically completely based on essays you write in which he grades pretty easily. I learned alot and would recommend this teacher.
best phil teacher. super humble. will hear you and try to help your understanding if you put forth the effort. makes it interesting even if your not into philosophical thought.
Apparently I'm the only one who thought this class was way weird. I agree that Dupen did a great job at being objective to the matter, but this class was so boring and he was so monotonous. I thought that instead of memorizing greek words for things or w
He was awesome- totally changed my way of thinking and perspective on life
I have takes this teacher 4 world religions and philosophy of religion. He weas the best teacher i have ever had. I would highly recomend him to anyone.
HE's agreat teacher, and funny, who else says "It's all Jiva all the time." Haha, great! He's good at explaining the concepts of the material we study as if very nice and very helpful to his students. If you take good notes and go to class every day you should get Bs and As on the tests. I recomend him for any philosophy and/or religion class.
Best teacher I've ever had. No finals, just essays. He explains everything really well and has a lot of discussions. All the reading isn't necessary if you pay attention in class. Take his class!
Kyle is a great teacher. He is interesting to listen to, as he is very learned. It is not hard to get an A in his class- you do need to attend though. I do admit, however, there were times that I was a little bored.
One of the best, wisest, most inspiring professors I've ever had...can't believe how much I learned. His world religions class blew me away! Highly, highly recommended!
he's a really good teacher. i go to class everyday however, he's exams are really really hard!
This is an awesome class!! You should take it! The subjects make you think about things that you have never even thought of thinking about before, if that makes any sense. Prof. Dupen is a wonderful teacher. His class really isn't that hard, no exams, just 4 essays, and they are on very interesting subjects. Take this class!
Very interesting class, with interesting topics being discussed. He is very open to other points of view and teaches well. Grades a little tough on papers, but still a great teacher!
Very passionate about the subject, very interesting class. Tests got harder as the semester progressed. TAKE NOTES!!! Show up and study and you'll be fine. Grade based on quizzes and 1 paper. I really enjoyed the class.
Gets you thinking about life and if you really take the class seriously, you'll realize how hard it is to write about the things he talks about. Great professor who knows his stuff. Do not recommend to people who don't like philosophy.
if you like philosophy this is your class. as long as i went to class and listened, not only did i enjoy thinking about the concepts he covered, but the writing assignments were a breeze with a little thought and effort.
I love this class! It's one of the few classes this semester that I really enjoy going to (even though attendence isn't manditory). He has a really good grasp on his subject and brings up a lot of really interesting topics that make you think. There are 3 papers and a bunch of other little assignments but he's a really easy grader.
One of the best Philosophy teachers I've ever had. The man got talent in teaching and very understandable. Even if you dont like Philosophy, you will find and appreciate it because the way he teaches the class. He could be the start to find your Brahman.
The greatest phil prof at SF.Very passionate about subject, caring to your situations, funny in a subtle way, kind hearted, understanding. He fits what he teaches.TWO thumbs up.
Kupen is awesome, he's passionate about his subject and he's overall a kind hearted person. Not only is his class easy, its really interesting too
Easy A but if you are into philosophy don't bother taking this class. It is really obvious stuff he teachers and repeats, nothing special, only take it if you want an easy A
A brilliant teacher, nuff said. Unlike the guy who rated below, i recommend going to this class not because its also an easy A, its an engaging class for sure. And that easy A doesnt come without effort. If you're looking to slack, dont take this class. Thoughtful essays are key to acing this class.
Whole class is lecture based. Never read the book, only holds you accountable for what he speaks on in the class. A quiz at the end of each religious section, so about 6 or 8 quizzes total. Drops lowest score. One large paper on a religious topic of your choice due a week before finals. Doesn't take roll, and usually goes over class time a few mins
World Religions Class. He's a nice guy who's really excited about his subject. Has about 5 quizzes, don't slack off on them because they are important! You must attend the lectures, take notes, and study in order to ace them. There is a final 8-page paper on any topic of religion of your choice, he grades hard on length. Good teacher.

This man is incredible. He's so passionate about what he teaches and he knows a lot. He's very objective about each religion, which I really appreciated. I also took him for Nature of the Religious Experience, which was also very good and thought provoking. He's a GREAT teacher. Take him for any class you can.
Kyle is probably the best professor you will ever have. Take my word for it. He's awesome.
He is very objective which is helpful in the learning process, you won't get stuck on a disagreement. He gets back to emails quickly and is very helpful/understanding with issues that may come up. He has great real life examples and an amazing ability to maintain his chain of thought no matter how abstract it may be. I reccommend him highly, its a
Loved him, I thought he was adorable. He's loves his subject and it shows.
Dupen is a great prof who is extrememly passionate about his subject. He will change your whole perspectives revolving around religion. He manages to be unbiased and extremely informative. Very nice, charismatic, and obviously enlightened individual. He is kind of my role model.
I stopped attending this class after a few weeks. His lectures were monotonous, redundant, dare I say pointless at times? He was a really nice guy, but very boring. And I love philosophy! If you're looking for an easy A without having to attend class too much, take the class. Just complete all the assignments.
One of the best teacher's i've had. this guy loves to draw, and he's really sincere. it is easy, but if you want an easy A there are other classes to take. it's in your best interest to attend
This man is a philosopher in himself. He stands up during class and gets so into what he is saying, that you can't help but listen and get absorb by the information. To get an A in this class you need to deeply think about what he is saying and give your opinion on it. This class will definitely make you look at the world differently.
He was only my instructor for a short time, but I found him to be one of the best teachers I have ever had. I learned so much just by listening to him. His lectures are like candy for the brain. I highly recommend him as a professor.
dupen seems to be extremely passionate about philosophy. great teacher. NOT a hard grader.. just wants to hear your opinions about the topics discussed. highly recommend him. his class definitely isn't a class to stress over esp. if you have a load on you already
I loved this class with a passion. At times the lectures dragged on, yet if one was to really pay attention to him, Dupen is extremely entertaining and has a lot of interesting information. Attendances is mandatory if one wants to do well in the class. I really recommend this class. It changed my life
A very interesting class. Dupen is very into the subject he teaches about. If you attend class it is a breeze.
Prof. Dupen is very passionate about this subject. There is no exams for this class, all essays. He gives essays about every other Tues. or Thurs. based on his lectures. I recommend anyone taking his class to literally jot down things he says because that's what he will look in your essays!! Pretty easy A if you take good notes and like philosophy
Awesome teacher. Knows a lot about the subject, easy going, humorous. Lectures can be somewhat boring at times but honestly it's not that bad. NO TESTS, only papers that are super easy. Attendance not mandatory, but if you want an A you should go to class and take some notes. Easy class, cool teacher, easy A.
he's very interesting and you should go to class to to get the info for the papers but you could go half the time and google the rest and still do ok. he's funny and the best stick figure artist ever.
I took this class over a year ago,and am about to take his PHIL525 class. One of the nicest and well spoken teachers I've had at state.Very manageable work load, light reading on very enlightening topics, and simple essays.Even if you don't go to all of his classes you'll do well;but do go and listen to what he has to say;he is incredibly insightful.
hmm, i beg to differ. i had a hard time staying up in this class. a little monotone. i dropped immediately.
He uses really clear, interesting and funny examples. He is extremely knowledgeable and has an endearing personality.
I highly recommend this class! It's one of those classes you should attend, but won't feel too bad if you miss. His manner of speaking may induce drowsiness at times, but he has a lot of interesting things to say. Work load is minimal, Midterms are take home. He loves to draw stick figures!
One of my favorite teachers. easy class. makes things very simple. show up as much as you can and write a few papers that are mostly based on your opinion and some info you pick up in lectures and reading. very kind and helpful. makes a very lofty subject seem more down to earth. very funny.
Dupen has been one of my most interesting teachers. His character definitely keeps you engaged in the subject. He makes everything interesting! He also acts highly amused many times (like a kid)
I barely went to the class. The only times I went to the class were to pick up homework assignments and exam instruction sheets. I never read the textbook and never read the novel but still pass with a B.
Kyle is down-to-earth & peaceful. His philosophy class is centered around the the question of "Why?" Eventually, you will feel as though there are no right/wrong answers. The grade: 4 essays(80%) & 10 short, weekly assignments(20%). You're mostly listening to the lectures & minimal note-taking. Warning: The pace is laid-back that you may cut often.
This class was awesome. Super interesting the whole time you are there, because if its not then just leave and you dont fall behind. Just be sure to do the weekly half sheet papers and your good. And remember you cant be wrong in phil if you back up your point.
He's a pretty chill guy and super laid back. The class itself is pretty easy and there's only one thing of hw a week usually which takes 15 minutes tops to do. I'm glad I was able to take this class and would recommend it for anyone in need of a GE class. Only con: you will get sleepy during the lecture at least a couple times.
Great professor. Has complete grasp over the subject and teaches it in an engaging and effective manner. The class isn't easy to the point of boredom but completely reasonable as far as workload. Kyle is so knowledgeable about the subject! You will definitely gain a fresh perspective from this class. Best GE course I've taken thus far!
Dupen was an amazing professor. It was obvious he still has passion for the subject he teaches. He lectures in a free style that is refreshing and completely interesting. He is a little shy in the beginning, but towards the end he comes out with a little bit of hilarity in his lectures by way of personal stories. the class is rather easy as well!
Dupen really enjoys philosophy! He's extremely passionate about it and just wants you to put in effort. I actually ending up failing one of the exams and he still ended up giving me a good grade! He's chill. Show up, show interest, and you'll do great/
Dupen is incredible. Done.
He is such a knowledgeable professor, and goes over material in detail. There was a lot of readings, and a total of 3 essays. Great Class, must take this teacher.
He's a very nice and interesting teacher! He made this semester bearable for me. He wants his students to do well, so he makes himself available for students who might have questions about philosophy. He knows how to connect with his students too, which is a plus! Very funny guy! Thank you Dupen!
Really cool guy, but his test are pretty hard and he's a hard grader. Class gets VERY boring... def not an easy A, but if you keep up and study, your good to go.
The class is pretty easy going. Three papers, and that's it. On one paper I did the night before and still got a B+ on it. I'm not sure what it takes to get an A-, I got a B+ but that's good enough for me. Some of the books you can the text online, so save your money.
I took intro to phil and religion and nature of the religious experience when I was at SF state my freshman year. Dupen changed my whole entire life. he is the most amazing prof I have ever have. He really knows how to teach and is such a smart and caring guy. I highly recommend him.
I took Dupen for World Religions and The Nature of the Religious Experience about 3 years ago now, and I still find some of the things he said in class memorable. One of the best professors I've ever had.
He's a great teacher, funny and makes things really easy to understand. The homework is easy and class is generally interesting.
Professor Dupen is an amazing teacher. The first day he started teaching was mind blowing,he started talking about interesting subjects we all think about everyday! he is super nice and will pretty much help you with anythings and has a great open mind and humor. Take this teacher you will learn a lot and remember everything :)
I had Dupen for Intro to Philosophy and Religion, and he is a great professor! He has a very soothing voice, though, which I found put me to sleep until I started typing my notes instead of hand-writing them. Homework and quizzes are generally easy as long as you do the reading, which can sometimes be difficult; but he often goes over it in class.
Very easy class. Just do the readings. His lectures are based off of the text, so he is mostly reiterating what you read. Only two exams, both of which are very easy. Final is a take-home report. Weekly homework in the middle of the semester, but all very easy. He can be boring, but a very nice guy.
Professor Dupen is the best f the best when it comes to philosophy. I took a class with him before and fell in love with his teaching style. He makes a boring subject very interesting and has such an adorable sense of humor. Very easy class, easy homework, easy tests. Just attend class and listen to his words of wisdom and you'll get an A.
I second the other students comments. What an awesome guy! Highly recommend!
amazing teacher, very nice and funny, everything he says is very interesting.
He's the best teacher I ever had and fun. Although the lectures maybe boring, he makes them interesting from time to time. It's good to go to class all the time because he constantly goes over the material and that's what makes his exams easier. He's pretty straightforward.
Great teacher definitely one of my favorites
The texts are really interesting! In fact, the readings have impacted me on a personal level, which is unlike any other class I've taken before. All in all, it's an easy going class, and the prof is an easy going guy. I hope to take another class of his.
interesting class. loved it.
A dull but easy class. If you like learning about various religions then this is the class for you. He's a nice guy and a good teacher, but the content is sooooo boring. 10 short writing assignments and 4 exams all worth 20% each. Take it if you have no other class to take.
Very interesting class, funny guy, and simple material. He gives ALOT of homework. Tests are fairly easy. I feel bad for saying this, even though he is nice and a good professor, I passed out almost everytime due to his monotone voice.
Brilliant professor. Passionate about lecturing. He explains the material so well. This class is by far the best class I have taken at sfsu, and its mostly due to his style of teaching. Open minded about different points of view. I went to every class meeting, Its impossible not to go, because that's how good he is. Take his class, you will be glad
Amazing teacher, perfectly clear and engaging lectures. Also he is a beautiful man.
Interesting lectures but they get a little boring sometimes. Great teacher great speaking style and very entertaining images to explain theories and ideas! Helpful in email and grades are pretty simple, weekly responses and 4 exams last one is take home attendance isn't taken but you'll definately miss out on a lot over all I would reccomend him!
This class is a fresh breath of intellectual air! Dupen's lectures are undeniably very inspiring and will always leave you in a good mood. He is a very sincere man and always gives you his full attention. He is a powerhouse of knowledge yet as humble as they come. TAKE THIS CLASS. EXPAND YOUR MIND!
Loved this professor! Attended every class meeting and never studied once, yet aced all his tests. Recommend basic notes for the first test. After that, if you just listen to him and do his hw (takes 5 minutes!), it will be a breeze! He truly cares and is inspiring but has a monotone voice so if you fall asleep easily, I recommend someone else.
Dupen is great! humorous and insightful. weekly readings are interesting, hw consists of short opinion papers ~biweekly. Exams are easy, final is take-home. Attendance not required but necessary to learn concepts you'll be tested on :)
Dupen is very intellectual and has great insight. I loved this class and felt like it was very meaningful and intriguing. I do agree however that he is pretty monotone, but he has a very cute way of being humorous.
passionate professor. his interest in philosophy was very enlightening. did 1/3 of the reading, and 10 mins of studying for each exam and ended up with a b+. weekly short essay or worksheet (about 45 mins of work) and a take home final! great class, and excellent discussions!
Holy crap! One of the best teachers i've taken at state! His lectures are so clear and his ideas are so eye opening. I never really did the readings, just came to class and listened and still managed to get an A. Very nice guy. All you have to do is listen to his lectures. It was easy because I enjoyed the topics we discussed. Loved this class
He's a very easy-going professor and very friendly. Sometimes his lectures put me to sleep, but more because it was an 8 AM class. I barely used any of the textbooks so save your money. Just do the responses, take notes and you'll be fine.
He is an amazing teacher. He helps you understand complex subject matter and exams are fairly easy. He is more concerned with your learning and not the stupid minutia of school. Take him , he's awesome! I will take more classes just for learning and fun.
Though I felt this class moved a little slow and I wasn't a huge fan of William James, I found that Dupen's paper prompts always got me thinking and writing on topics that were dearly important to me. I learned a lot about myself and my own beliefs over the course of the semester. I recommend to Phil majors as well as to fulfill GE.
This class was very interesting and pretty easy. Grade was based on your tests and short weekly responses. he did not take attendance but going to class is highly recommended. Everything on the tests are from your notes plus he hands out a study guide. come to class, listen& take notes and you'll for sure get a B.
Dupen is probably one of my favorite professors I've had so far. His lectures are very interesting and the tests correlate perfectly to the readings and lectures. If anyone is unclear on the reading he goes over it and explains it really clearly in class. Plus he wears corduroy almost every day.
He is a great professor who is passionate about what he teaches. This class is all about going to class and taking notes about what he says. 3 quizzes and 4 papers with readings for hw. Quizzes and papers are based off of exact material from class. Take this class
He is the most helpful Prof I have come across, will go above and beyond to accommodate the students and help in anyway possible. A great teacher who inspires you to learn and live better. Tests are easy and based on lectures, don't miss the class as you only hinder your learning process. I will take more classes with him if possible. AWESOME!
He is a pretty easy teacher that knows what he is talking about. Although sometimes the picures that he draws on the board to illustrate what he's talking about makes no sense,I still understand most of what hes talking about. I would recommand taht people take his class.
Professor Dupen has such enthusiasm. There isn't mandatory attendence, but it's definitely beneficial. He goes over the reading and everything on the exams. Only three exams and four papers - no final exam. 100% Recommend!
He is a cool dude. Weekly discussion papers are due, he makes you sleep sometimes, but all in all, it's interesting. Philosophy is boring, so if you get bored, don't take it.
Professor Dupen lectures in an extremely scholarly way that can sometimes be very difficult to understand. Attendance is not mandatory and is not necessarily needed. Your grade is based on 3 papers throughout the year so as long as you can write you should be fine.
Hands down, one of BEST professor I have EVER had. His lectures are VERY well prepared, no boring PPT. He has a definite purpose and never rambles. He presents the topic in a way that kept me highly engaged, and I thought I would hate the class. Attendance is not mandatory, but you need to attend to have material for exam. Highly recommended.
The most soothing voice ever. Attendance not mandatory, HIGHLY recommended. Passes out study guides before midterms which are very helpful. Just go to class, you shouldn't get less than a B. Only reason I got a C was because I didn't do 2 of the reading write ups. And we were only assigned 10 for the semester. Very intriguing class!
Dupen is amazing. I took three of his classes because I enjoyed him so much. He is extremely articulate and expresses beautifully-composed thoughts with fluidity and care. He is pensive and insightful, and gives wonderful feedback on all papers. He can be unexpectedly witty and charming, and it appears as though he surprises even himself at times.
He is a really good teacher. He is very fair and understanding. If you like philosophy, then you should take this class.
I absolutely loved this class and honestly developed a tiny crush on Dupen as the semester came to an end. He has such a peaceful voice and everything we discussed reflected our daily lives. It was the kind of class i've been wanting to take in college. Helped ,e examine my life and and choices I made and really wanted to be a better person. :)
This guy is awesome. He's very enthusiastic, and you takeaway something meaningful from almost every lecture. While not mandatory, attendance is important if you want to do well on the exams. One of the best classes I've taken because you learn about different concepts and ideas that you can apply in your approach to your everyday life.
Great teacher! don't even need to read the books because he explains everything multiple times! Easy A i would say.
Please be aware before taking this class. If you are NOT a Philosophy major. SKIP IT. I took it to fulfill my upper division general ED. The name of the class sounded interesting but it is one of the most boring classes I have ever experienced. The material is hard to understand, there is SO MUCH reading to do, and it's not Professor Dupen's fault.
I have absolutely no interest in philosophy at all and honestly just took the class because I had no other choice, but I don't regret it at all. Kyle Dupen is super chill, funny, and knows what he's talking about. He gives out study guides for exams and offers extra help if you need it. I skipped a couple of classes and still managed to do fine!
Wise, experienced man with a soothing voice and great sense of humor.
If you want to do well and actually want to know what is going on, show up to class. I skipped a couple and felt lost. But he is an easy grader as long as you address all his questions and explain well. I always received A's on the assignments and tests. The final was take home and easy as long as you pay attention in class. He is very clear.
Ross Geller's Doppelganger, have the same exact voice. Quite stylish night I add (Rocking those earth tones). As long as you read the material, you don't have to show up to class or if you want to skip reading then show up to class, he just summarize the material into interesting stories. 4 in-class written essay.. maybe
Mr. Dupen is the best teacher I have gotten to work with in our Philosophy Department. He really does a fantastic job at making the material interesting, understandable, and relatable. I looked forward to his lectures every class!
I loved this prof! Dupen has clear & reasonable expectations. He is open to critique & alternate views, laid back, approachable, passionate about teaching, and builds student's confidence. If you show clear effort towards homework, you will do well. Tests are no curve balls - no tricks or stumps if you listen to lectures and actively participate.
This is the only class I actually liked going to. I would medicate quite often before class, because of my back pain, and i was still able to full understand everything he would lecture. Mr. Dupen, is really passionate about his job, and does a good job at explaining anything you have trouble with. He's a cool dude!
Long lectures that get boring but the homework and tests are super easy. The study guides explain exact what you need to know! I never went to class and still passed just by doing the readings!
Kyle is an awesome professor. If you're struggling with identity, religious beliefs, beliefs about the world please take this class. It helped me open my mind and relax because no one, especially college students, have any idea what the hell they're doing and that's 100% okay. This class helped put my mind at ease. Kyle's the bomb!
Professor Dupen does a fantastic job using various religious perspectives to build a layered understanding of the central subject matter, I found it to be incredibly illuminating and inspiring. His lectures clearly demonstrate his passion for the subject matter and he uses very genuine personal anecdotes poignantly and humorously throughout. GREAT!
Kyle left me feeling so much more clear on my religious standing and I really appreciate the unbiased perspectives he's left me with. Some lectures are harder to follow than others, but he will always explain in more depth if needed. A very gentle person, and his voice is incredibly soothing. Plus he looks like a more down-to-earth Fonzie.
He was really passionate about the topic, but it did get a little boring at times because class wasn't very engaging. He talks pretty monotone and you just sit there taking notes every class. Homework was just a response question every week and 4 tests. No midterm or final. Just understand the material and show it.
This professor is very passionate about philosophy! The lectures can be quite boring. He doesn't take roll, but I strongly recommend going and taking good notes. He gives you a study guide for tests and homework once a week. Tests are hard if you don't study since they're free response. I would recommend him!
Very easy going professor, you just need to stay on top of the reading and take notes in class. 4 exams, 10 homework responses. It might get boring where you start doodling (me) but not a hard class you just have to learn and think a lot.
The class is very boring and he DOESN'T make it interesting at all. He speaks in monotone and honestly I find him weird. Attendance is not mandatory, but I find it hard for me to be motivated to attend his class. Hands out a study guide & grades the tests base off of if we understand it somewhat. The tests are hard & his wording on it is horrible.
Class is really lecture heavy, and he can talk for the whole class time. I respect him a lot because he knows his subject well, but because attendance isn't mandatory, I didn't show up to class as much as I should have. His notes are messy so just make sure to take really good notes. Response questions are easy.
Dupen is honestly a phenomenal individual, however his class is really boring. The class basically consists of him lecturing the entire class period. Class consists of 4 exams and 10 response questions. Honestly, the class can be a bit difficult but Dupen is incredible and works with his students to ensure that they do well. Take Dupen!
Dupen is an amazing passionate guy. Take him if you want to let your deep thoughts out. Every week there's a response question you have to do which he grades easily. Exams are easy as long as you go to class and pay attention to what he says and take notes. Exams based on lectures, not recorded, answers cant be found in the reader
Kyle Dupen is by far the best teacher I have had. His class was another level. I guarantee if you engage yourself in the topic, you'll find that time passes by so fast. Dupen is caring teacher and is always willing to talk if you reach out. Want to fulfill a GE while having a class that keeps you sane and actively learning? Take this class. DO IT!!
Dupen genuinely cares about the subject matter and it shows - he FEELS what he's saying. Sincerely wants students to understand the material & will do what he can to help (though he needs to see effort!). Good to talk to about class topics and all kinds of ideas, and is knowledgeable on various subjects. Excellent human being & truly solid teacher.
Dupen is an interesting teacher! He makes the class intriguing but he also has a monotone voice that makes you sleepy and bored. Attendance is not mandatory. Weekly responses were easy and the exams are mainly take home. Easy A in my opinion!
This man is a GOD. Please take his class, whatever it is, you will not regret it. He is one of the best professors I ever had. He makes his class really interesting. Dupen is a genius, and should be worshiped. Please take his class if you have the chance!
This class is very much lecture based; however, Dupen makes it interesting. I will admit that when he drones on, his voice can get a bit dull and make you sleepy, but I can tell he is genuinely passionate about the subject he is teaching. Only about $15 total for textbooks.
Took him for Phil 525. He's a really great professor, attendance is not mandatory but recommended to show up at least 60% to understand his essay prompts. He explains very very well, and he's quite funny. I messed up and typed a small section of our textbook into a 6 page essay however, and ended up failing the class a result of it.
Lecture heavy, but always interesting. Dupen clearly loves what he teaches so you can't help but pay attention. Subtly funny. Grade depends only on a few papers (one per section) that he grades pretty thoroughly. One textbook (small/cheap/interesting) for the whole semester. Definitely recommend this class! Just try and you'll pass.
Good Teacher in my eyes. He loves what he teaches his lectures are really heavy but he only grades 10 responses that are easy A's and the tests are somewhat difficult but they were not too challenging. Just his notes on the board are a little bit wacky his voice VERY monotone so try not to fall asleep I did! Only 4 exams and the last one take home!
at first i thought his class was so boring, but the more i came to his class, the more it got interesting. his voice is very monotone which makes the lecture boring at times, but he can also be funny. u should show up to class bc lectures help explain the topic u are learning w/o even reading the book. tests were manageable, ull just need to study.

This professor is alright, being lecture-heavy and a simple grading criteria. His class is easy and allows you to practice philosophy, unlike others who only study philosophers. Most of the information is presented in class so attendance is mandatory and the class itself is fairly easy.
This man is a genius. Sure, he has a monotonous voice, but he's clearly so passionate about what he's talking about that it works for him. He presents his lectures in a very easy-to-follow manner, and often recaps big ideas a couple times throughout his lectures to really solidify the information in your mind. Take his course!
So just go to class and take notes on the words that are non-english and if you do so the study guild will carry the weight. so if you show up and listen you will pass easily. Also if you can make it to quiz day he can help you reschedule it .
I had trouble staying awake every lecture but the study guides for the exams help a lot.
Professor dupen is the gem. Hands down the best professor in SFSU. His voice may make the lecture seems boring but if you pay attention, its very interesting and inspiring. Attendance not mandatory but you wont pass if u dont go. During pandemic, switched to short quizzes frequently. i exam 1 paper. chill class. Take him, thank me later.
I sometimes didn't do homework but if you go to class he goes over homework and DOES NOT collect!! It's really for your own practice. If you do the homework or go over it in class with him, you WILL pass quizzes and exams. Lectures get boring so don't try to take notes on everything. JUST HOMEWORK!!! GREAT PROFESSOR!! ORGANIZED! (easy A if I tried)
literally my favorite. the stuff he talks about is hella interesting if ur into that stuff :)
Absolutely fantastic Professor. He's passionate in what he teaches and he's always there to help you out. Would take another class by this professor any time
His lectures were pretty boring because of his monotone voice but class can get interesting. He assigns response questions that are pretty much limitless and you can write about absolutely anything and get an easy A. He gives three exams which are all 5 short answer response questions but he grades pretty tough on them.
One of my favorite professors. Took his Nature of Religious Experience course back in 2012 and always regretted not having taken another course of his. I recall it being extraordinarily easy, but that may be due to how effortless it felt given my intrinsic interest in the lectures and material. Rather than impose learning, he inspires it.
Best professor at SF State. His lectures are extremely interesting and his assignments are actually fun to do because they apply to real life. I didn't like philosophy before his class but now I've already signed up for another one of his classes! Definitely recommend if you want to gain a lot of knowledge and get an easy A.
Kyle Dupen is so far my favorite professor at SF State. He is engaging, thought-provoking, and pretty laid back. Listening to his lectures is like thinking about life while sitting in a recliningd chair. I barely even read any of the materials and I was able to get an A based on his lectures alone. 5 Stars, 5/5, 10/10, 100% without question!
If you like listening to lectures that are monotone, confusing, and all over the place for an hour and 45 mins then this is the class for you. I was so excited to take World Religions but this class was so horrid and boring I regret ever considering it. I learned nothing because his quizzes are just as ridiculous as his lectures. DO NOT TAKE!!
This has been the worst class I have taken in my entire college experience. The most BORING lecture ever. There is no homework only multiple papers (Exams) you have to write throughout the semester on the religions but the questions are impossible. This class was harder than any of my upper divisions. If you are not a PHIL major DO NOT take this.
I agree with other review that his class is definitely hard and you have to work hard. His lectures correspond to the exams and so in my opinion they were more time consuming to complete them rather than difficult. I am not a PHIL major and I this class was no doubt hard. He's nice and respectful but don't expect an easy A
Although his voice is very monotone try to pay attention because what he is discussing is very Interesting! There are 10 response questions(half page), you share your opinion. I did not find the exams to be difficult, it's just time-consuming watching the lectures and looking at the readings for the info to incorporate into your answers. He's cool!
This class was so hard to me. It is very interesting but his voice is so monotone it is very hard to pay attention. He is very passionate about this topic though. You have four exams and they should be easy if you actually go to class. They are open notes and you should get a good grade if you answer it like you know what you're talking about.
Ive never taken a more spiritually engaging and moving class than this one. Every lecture seriously had the class in a fugue of self-questioning and human awareness. I never even glanced at the clock. The material is dense but accessible. Take Dupen. Really regret not adding more of his classes.
Great phil professor. I liked him but others found his monotone voice a bit tiring. I liked that we learned actual skills and not just contemplated life. It is a bit hard because if you don't understand it then you never will, but all pretty okay concepts.
The best! This man is why I want to minor in philosophy and take ANOTHER class with him! He teaches the material so well, he's so passionate. People complain he's monotone, but they fail to mention he's also got heart and love for what he teaches. He has the best lectures, the material is life-changing and meaningful, I highly recommend him!
Interesting material and the exams were not that difficult if you think about and relate the material to your life.
take the class you wont regret it. no assignments and his lectures really get you thinking about life. voice is super relaxing
Study questions where you give your opinion on a philosophical question every once in a while. Tests are generally just like the homework, so not so difficult. Philosophical lectures are good but stay very focused/don't allow people to branch out too much into other ideas or anything too "extreme." Most don't interact as they're there for an easy A
Kyle Dupen's Philosophy and Religion class was an amazing introduction to his teaching. His course reader is clear and well-thought-out, and he is passionate about the subjects and always loves to get the students engaged in his lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it's better to be there in order to answer the questions he posts on iLearn.
Extremely likable professor. Rarely gives any assignments, the ones he does assign are extremely easy to do. Tests are relatively easy, just pay attention in class/take notes & youll be set. He doesnt take attendance, but its in your best interest to come since his lectures arent posted online. You just have to buy a small booklet for the semester
Dude's great. Lectures on the topic are fascinating. Attendance is not mandatory. Easy grader for the most part. Final is a take home exam. You do have to purchase a textbook from him but it's cheap. He's also very nice and understanding. Taking him is a must.
super fun & interesting class! he knows his stuff & is really lecture heavy. he is monotone but is passionate about the material. he doesn't use a slide show so all the info is auditory besides the vocab words he writes on the board & cool diagrams. honestly never used his booklet as long as you show up to class. easy hw, 3 exams & 1 final.
Dupen was amazing! Your grade will be based on 4 exams - he gives study guides out before each one and as long as you do the reading or take good notes , they are extremely easy. The thought questions he gives out are extremely interesting and all in all he' s an amazing professor. Very entertaining classes.
This is one of the best professors I have ever had. His teaching style is perfect to me. Make sure to go to every lecture (even though he doesn't count attendance) so that you can do well on the exams and homeworks
Attendance isn't mandatory but it's much easier and interesting to go regularly. Only one reading response due a week and maybe 2 tests, he's a generous grader. Connects the lecture to daily life and makes you view life differently-- I suggest him to everyone needing a philosophy credit.
Kyle was a good professor. It was a very straightforward course and honestly kind of interesting he just talked kinda low so I'd get distracted or bored. He grades mostly for your exams which are pretty easy if you read the course reader it's all there. There are a few assignments popped in here and there but those are mad easy. I recommend!
Engaging professor who makes philosophy relatable. Attendance recommended, with easy exams if you keep up with lectures and readings. unstuck ai was super helpful for synthesizing key concepts.
This was personally the best class I have ever taken. Professor is extremely knowledgable, and if you are at all interested in philosophy the topics discussed here are fascinating. As long as you go to the lectures, the tests should be easy to you. The weekly readings/writings are short and very interesting. Take this class!
This was a truly enjoyable class. The professor is very knowledgeable on the subject and works to makes his lectures engaging to his students. As someone with no background or deep interest in philosophy, I found his lectures to be engaging, fun, and relatable. Overall, wonderful class that I am happy I took.
He's all right
this guys amazing. i took his class like 2 years ago and i STILL think about what a wonderful teacher he was. i check every semester to see if theres a class hes teaching so i can join it bruh i wish i could take his class again. i hope to meet u again professor dupen
Professor Dupen was great. His lectures were interesting and very calming to listen to. Attendance for this class isn't mandatory, but homework is due every week. There are also 4 exams. 3 are in-person, and the final is a take-home exam that is essay-based. Keep up with the lectures; online material often isn't enough to study for exams.
