One of the best professors I've ever had.
Very funny and well taught class. The ladies think he's sexy.
great sense of humor and presentation of the materials. definitely hot, too
Great teacher. Very well prepared for class. Also, the hottest man in the pioneer valley :-)
Pretty easy class, got to use notes on all the test and the TAs were helpful. Its a good class to fill the math requirement.
Kyle B. Johnson is my future husband. He is by FAR the hottest man in massachusetts, never mind the pioneer valley. A talented professor, with amazing teaching skills...and his intense physical beauty is icing on the proverbial cake!

My favorite class so far at umass, he makes it really fun
The lecture is really interesting most of the time. The textbook is optional so you don't have to buy it. We never used it (plus there were chapters online for free). Kyle is really great too. One of my favorite classes at Umass.
The class is challenging but intersting. He makes you think of things in a way that you never looked at it before. The class is always intersting and sometimes entertaining.
Easy class if you pay attention and go to all lectures. Really amusing prof. and keeps the class entertained. Just don't screw up your homework percentage as its 35% of ur grade..
really funny and crazy teacher..the material is a little confusing but if u go to class and discussions it will help u out alot and it will make things so much easier..do the hw because it really determines ur grade..but all around great class!!!

kyles the man. he forces people to participate, make fun of everyone in the class, keeps things very light. the material is easy enough, the discussion helps. tests are easy. hes kinda excentric, which i liked, but not everyone does
He is soooo bad at explaining everything. Only the Ta's can help you. I hate his class and dread going everyday
AMAZING professor. I love him. He's hysterical, and makes linguistics extremely easy. His explinations were clear, and he did his best to clarify any confusion. By far one of my favourite professors. If you have him for 201 don't buy the book. Tests are based completely off the material covered in lecture.
Professor Johnson is a great teacher. The subject matter can be somewhat confusing but if you go to him or your TA they will help explain it. I enjoyed the class he didn't speak down to anyone and tried to get people involved. I would love to take one of his classes again.
he's a great/entertaining professor who seems like a genuinely nice guy. was very fair in grading and testing and made a really boring subject somewhat interesting. also kind of cute. generally one of my best classes.
Funny guy, class is almost like a comedy routine. Sometimes takes him a while to get to the point, but he is always available via email or office hours for additional help. His homeworks can be difficult, but if you see him about them, he can really help you through them. Ask him to do the bumblebee dance 201 students.
a semi-difficult class if you know nothing about linguistics, but Kyle Johnson makes linguistics hilarious, somehow. definitely worth taking this as an R2 and the R1 exemption test. This teacher makes it an excellent class.
His use of humor helps increase the digestibility of the dry material.
This was my major untill I took this class. The material is absolutely ridiculous and unless you are willing to devote all of your free time in your T.A's office getting extra help then don't take this class.
Great guy. Truly wants his students to succeed & get the best grade possible. Don't bother buying the textbook becuase you don't use it! You must attend class but it is enjoyable & entertaining. Loved the class but it is very challenging. If you work hard and attend all classes, discussions & extra help sessions, there is no reason not to get an A!
Coolest teacher of all time. Going to class is vital but he is such an entertaining teacher I sit in the front row just to witness the show. He jumps up and down and is so enthusiastic it is impossible not to fall in love with linguisics.
I LOVE HIM. the class is extremely hard but he is the best professor ever- hilarious, and always available for help. he wants his students to succeed. he is great.
Professor Johnson is hilarious. I can't say I like this class very much, but he makes every lecture entertaining. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I've found myself going to every one because he's just so awesome. The subject can be tough if it's totally foreign but he's very very helpful, and always responds right back to emails. He's da best.
lectures are hysterically funny, and when he's finished, the material that looked impossible somehow makes sense. really good at explaining things, and very patient. does a lot to help students out. even though he doesnt take attendance, go to classes, because they're just so entertaining. best professor i had this semester, if not ever.
Hands down best professor at Umass. I needed linguistics to fulfill a gen-ed but ended up absolutely loving his class because he is so funny and clear with his material. Also very willing to help.
Professor Johnson generates interest. Whether he is greeting you warmly when he enters the lecture hall, or smashing elves to illustrate the importance of syntax and prepositional phrases, he makes you want to come back each class. He was also very useful during office hours... I can't believe more people did't go to those!
He's so entertaining that I sat in the front row everyday to see him "perform"
This guy is literally the man. He's got teaching down pat, and he'd better get the Distinguished Teacher Award. He's brilliant, definitely knows his stuff; you wouldn't know you were getting taught if there were no evaluations. He makes everything seem like common sense.
The subject matter can be confusing in the large lecture setting, but one on one, Kyle is extremely helpful! If you do not feel like you could handle calculus for your R2, take linguistics! It is difficult but as I do not like math, this was the best option for me.
Great professor!! totally deserves the Distinguished Teaching Award. The subject matter is kind of difficult but Kyle is great about taking the time to explain it and is really available for offices hours! Loved this class! I'd take it again if I could
Kyle Johnson is the man! He is so entertaining and so funny. I looked forward to this class every day. Each class flew by, and when it ended I wished it could last longer. He has such a great sense of humor, he makes the material interesting and easy to learn, and he makes the class worthwhile. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH KYLE JOHNSON! HIGHLY RECCOMMEND!
Incredibly challenging, eccentric, and enthusiastic professor. If you're willing to put in a great deal of effort and send an occasional e-mail or two asking for help, you'll easily pass his class. The lectures capture my attention, even though the material can be confusing. Recommended professor if you don't mind really working.
I'm a senior and this is by far the most difficult course I've taken. Kyle managed to make a very complex subject enjoyable and comprehensive. He is fantastic!
Hilarious, entertaining, and clear.
I love this prof - so funny and really warm and kind.
Absolutely fantastic! His lectures were nearly always interesting and his teaching is incredible. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.
SUCH an easy class...as long as you go to your discussions and you have a good TA then you're good to go. Kyle was helpful too, but not everything he teaches shows up on the exams. There are only 3 exams, and they were all easier than the weekly homework assignments. Go to discussions, go to your TA extra help sessions, and you're guaranteed an A.
Best professor I've ever had! You certainly need to put effort into the class, but it is so worth it. Only reason I got a bad grade is because I didn't put in enough work. He's witty, renowned in his field, and incredibly nice! IF YOU DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS, YOU WILL PROBABLY REGRET IT.
Fantastic professor.
Very quirky and fun professor, I had a lot of fun in this class. His tests are very easy (didn't get lower than a 96) and the homework wasn't unreasonable, though it could sometimes be demanding with the grading. Large lecture, but he added a lot of participation and exercises including elves and such ;) I took this in place of a math for the R2.
One of the most intelligent and entertaining professors I've had. Very challenging, but definitely worth it.
Pretty funny guy and is good at keeping your attention. The concepts can be difficult to grasp but he is super helpful, especially when you see him at office hours.
Awesome professor.
This class had some very tricky concepts as it progressed, but he made them very clear and made sure all questions were answered. He was also very helpful during office hours. The workload was reasonable but the problems required a lot of thinking. Very funny guy. Would definitely take another class from him.
He's super funny and personable but this class is terrible. Do not take unless it's an requirement cause the class is a lot of work. The homework assignment is hard and sometimes very long. Professor Johnson, is not very bright (he did not know how to use able in a sentence). He tries to make class enjoyable for everyone which is nice.
This was my favorite class last semester! The information is very interesting but can be a little difficult, but he understands that and tries to make the class as interesting as possible without boring you to death. Easily my favorite professor I've had so far!
Kyle is the best! If you go to class, pay attention, and do all the assignments, you will get an A. There is no book, which is great. Only 3 tests the whole semester, including the final. He was always willing to talk after class or during office hours and was so helpful and passionate about linguistics. I Definitely recommend this class.
Kyle is passionate. That really sums up his teaching style and his personality. He truly cares about what he's teaching and wants his students to comprehend it. He has the entire class laughing each lecture. He does put his Powerpoints online, but you are really missing out if you don't go to class, for the sheer enjoyment of the classroom.
great class. crazy hard grader. Hard to take this class online since scheduling skype office hours is hard and there is no TA.
Kyle's persona is definitely one most college kids would be able to relate to. He is awkward yet funny---beware, however, of sexual innuendos (and yet its somehow not creepy) Definitely learned more from this class than Ling101. I would honestly just skip to Ling201 with Kyle. Also, I had an AWESOME TA!! Felt Iike both wanted me to succeed.
I expected a class about language to have a lot of reading and writing - which I was dreading - but Kyle's 201 feels much like a math or computer science class. He's hilarious and has consistently been helpful when I've emailed him questions. The material's tough, but I've never thought an assignment was irrelevant or not useful. Would take again.
This class is fair, and kyle is passionate. If you are bad at critical thinking, math, or wrapping your head around difficult ideas do not take this class. You should pay attention, everything builds on what was taught previously. No textbook, no readings, only one hw a week--but they take a while and count for a lot of your grade.
Kyle is hysterical. Funny guy, loves linguistics. Absolutely terrible at answering questions in class. Definitely go to your discussion sections, my TA ended up teaching me every unit, not Kyle. Not a bad class if you go to office hours and stuff like that.
Professor Johnson is absolutely amazing. A total legend. Linguistics 201 was amazing and entertaining but I also learned so much. You learn a lot in lecture BUT a good TA will make your grade. Definitely show up to the discussions.
You didn't have to go to lecture. LING401 was mainly problem sets that relied on knowledge from lecture notes. Lecture notes are long and tedious, but Prof. Johnson is still one of my favorite professors at UMass.
I took 201 with Kyle in the fall and 401 in the spring (and 401's what I'm rating for difficulty here-- 201 was easy by comparison.) Kyle's an absolutely fantastic professor and I'd tell any student to take at least one class with him. You have to put in a lot of your own time in for 401 but it'll be worth it at the end! Great guy, awesome teacher.
Pretty good for my first ever Linguistics class, only big complaint I have is some lacking in clarity in regards to questions on several HWs. Was pretty good at answering questions when I had them though. The way he sets up the class makes it really hard to get 100% right on any given HW or test - you can still do well, but perfectionists beware.
Literally best professor I've ever had. He's hilarious, incredibly smart, and cares about how you're doing. Made me love linguistics! Highly highly recommend.
Kyle is a fine lecturer but he is a bit harsh. There are two exams that are 25% of your grade that are challenging. The final is worth 30% so if you do bad your grade will suffer. The homework is hard but if you go to office hours and do it with the ta every week you will get an 100% for the assignments.
Kyle's class is a lot of fun. Honestly can say that I learned a lot. One of the hardest classes I've ever taken, but I really felt like I earned my grade. If you want to preserve your GPA maybe not the best decision, but this class is totally worth it!
He is a really smart and funny professor, but the class is really hard if you are not a ling major. I do not suggest taking this for the R2 requirement to get out of taking math, it is very confusing and oftentimes the lectures go a bit fast. A lot of the slide content could use some elaboration and homework is graded critically and by correctness.
Kyle Johnson is an amazing human, which I have only realized now after graduation. Take a course with this man and engage in lectures and in office hours. They say you forget most of what you learn in school, but I bet you won't forget any of the people who impact your life. And work hard in the course, hard to engage when you're behind in work.
Honestly I went to this class once and didn't pass but Kyle was always wicked nice and helped me whenever I needed it. Really cares for his students.
great big bear and very soft we love him
Kyle is a really good professor. He is witty. He cares about students situation. Although I am not an English native speaker, 201 is easy for me to take. Also josh lee is a really responsible TA. If you are in his section, his discussion will help you a lot on HW and test. I got full points in the second midterm, and everyone else also did great.
Super funny guy. He explains concepts well and is always willing to help. My grade dropped a lot so he would sit with me in office ours and we would work together on stuff and I got a lot better. I thought that in college you would have to do everything yourself, but Kyle is proof that you don't have to always be on your own. Best ling prof at UMA.
i really like kyle as a person! i think he is a good professor, and is very open to answering questions, but doesn't necessarily seem to know the answers quite so often. he moves INCREDIBLY fast through the material, and it seems as though many people (linguistics majors?) have prior knowledge. super funny and relatable though!
Very funny and engaging, made a somewhat dry subject interesting. Clear in his expectations. Not a hard class with a little effort. Good at making sure students understand the material and answering questions.
kyle is a phenomenal teacher!! 201 was one of my favorite classes and if you can take it, you absolutely should (provided you're interested in linguistics and problem solving esque things). his lectures are hilarious and highly informative at the same time so make sure you attend them! beware of the elves.
Favorite professor in the ling department easily. Amazing lectures and manages to get you used to the basics of Linguistics in 201 while also not dumbing down any of the concepts introduced.
Overall probably the best professor I have ever had. Clearly passionate about what he is teaching and really took into account students' opinions regarding exam questions and grading. The class material was sometimes hard, especially phonology but he was very open to helping people during office hours and made things so much clearer.
Lectures could use a lot of elaboration, many subjects are sped through leaving the class with an inadequate knowledge of material. Homework is lo graded for correctness, since lectures subjects are sped through with little elaboration the homeworks are very challenging. He expects students to grasp concepts more in depth then he is teaching them.
Kyle Johnson is easily one of my favorite professors. He's really funny, & he's someone who makes the members of the class comfortable enough to participate/ask questions. He's good @ teaching the material & making it engaging. For some reason, he highly dislikes dogs & ESPECIALLY elves. This might not be relevant @ first, but it will be later >:).
I am a linguistics major, so take that into account - but this course was absolutely fascinating. Kyle's passion is clear in his teaching, and his lectures are both engaging and easily digestible. Expectations for coursework and grading are clear and incredibly fair for a 200 level course. This class was easily my favorite this past semester.
hilarious, insightful guy. he really cares about what he teaches. lectures were engaging because of his passion. three exams which i didnt find too difficult. the hardest was weekly homework assignments which didnt take too long, but were pretty tricky and grades heavily varied based on which TA you have.
Kyle was really great! He was funny, down-to-earth, and knew a lot about the topic. Because it was a big class, I didn't get a lot of one-on-one experience with him, but the lectures were great and he was always happy to take questions. There were no papers in the class, only weekly homework assignments and three tests, which were very manageable.
I kind of did this to myself. This class is so hard especially since attendance is optional. Kyle is great but my TA was frequently late and frazzled. Didn't really help at all. Grading wasn't very clear.
Great class
professor Kyle wasn't the issue with this class, it was linguistics itself. if you're not passionate about it, don't take the class. you will not have fun. it's like learning a whole new alphabet and you have to relearn proper english pronunciations (you have to put in a lot of effort, if you're taking for a gen Ed, its not worth it). love kyle tho
