Kyle is such an awesome instructor. The material can be dry and heavy at times but the analytical tools you develop by being in his class will improve your entire academic career. Make sure to attend every lecture and attend as many office hours as you can. That is the best way to do well in this is course!
If you're looking for a knowledgable, caring, and charismatic professor who does his best to keep lectures relevant and engaging, Kyle is your guy. Prepare for lots of laughs at his witty remarks and meme obsession. While this class was my favourite, it doesn't mean it was easy. The paper, and two exams require an understanding of course concepts.
Kyle was a great prof, if a little nervous. Great readings!
Kyle is an amazing prof!! He is genuinely enthusiastic about what he is teaching and is extremely educated on the subjects he talks about. Due to the fact it is a 4 credit course there is two appears, but they are laid out nicely and quite easy to understand. The mid term exam was VERY fair, everything was discussed in lecture and was major topics.
Kyle's lectures are super informative and they are important to attend as many questions for tests are from class exercises. He's approachable, friendly, and gives great lectures. He is a fair marker and asks very reasonable questions for tests. I would definitely recommend any of the classes he teaches.
Hands down my favourite class this semester. Kyle made the lectures really fun and communicated the material effectively; I didnt even need to use the text book! Our Ta Gyuzel was also good& kept discussions interesting.I slacked off second term and barely tried but still managed to get an okay mark. This class has made me want to switch my major.
Kyle is a passionate professor who makes his lectures very engaging and relatable. I found that this helped to make the material easier to learn. Despite tutorials being 2 hours, they had a great impact on making sure the material learnt in lecture was understood well. I would recommend this class!
Kyle is an awesome prof! His lectures are really engaging and very clear, but he does tend to go fast. There are no trick questions on his exams, everything is straight forward. Definetly would take his class again.
Kyle has been my favorite prof. of all these 3 years in Sociology. He is very intelligent and knows how to communicate the material in an accessible, fun and exciting manner. The content of the SA 327 was very relevant for any student pursuing an university degree, not only for sociologists. I really look forward to have a class with him again!
Passionate and funny. The class is easy enough but all depends on the T.A you get. My T.A was horrible but still enjoyed prof Willmott
Love Kyle, great instructor great lecturer, super funny and really nice
Kyle was a great prof! He made lectures very interesting and was such a funny guy! The class was based on 2 papers and Midterm and Final. It is important to read the textbook to get good marks on the exams. Fairly an Easy A if you study well and have a good TA!
kyle was awesome, he made his lecture super interesting, although I would suggest really studying hard on concepts for the mid terms!
I really enjoyed Kyle's class. I found him to be very friendly and personable. The course was really interesting and made me think about issues in a different way. He is very passionate and you can see it in his teaching style. Would do another class with him!
Kyle was an awesome prof! His lectures were funny, interactive and informative. He prepared us well for the tests, which I found fair. I was not sure about sociology before taking this course. Kyle has convinced me that it's a great field of study. I would definitely take another course with Kyle.
he's honestly a gem slides are primary source - treat textbook as supplementary reading does test on additional reading - not long / very interesting tries his best to connect with the students through memes hilarious + connects concepts to real life grading scheme is fair - grade depends on the TA eye opening class to society's norms
Kyle is super hilarious and made lectures super fun! His lecture slides were informative and kept my attention the entire time. I would suggest reading all the material he assigns because you will be tested on EVERYTHING. Super fair guidelines on assignments/tests. Although, two hour tutorials were not fun - get ready to speak up.
Kyle is one of the most charismatic and knowledgeable professors in the entire department. He goes above and beyond to help students in class and in his office. Lectures are fun and engaging even when they go on for 4 hours straight. Take any classes he offers, they will all be super interesting
Kyle is one of my favourite professors. He's got a great sense of humour and his lectures are super entertaining. He's very passionate about his discipline and doesn't read off his slides, it's all from his own intelligence which keeps you listening. 2 hour tutorials are eh, but my TA was great so it wasn't that bad. Take any class he teaches!!!
Kyle is an amazing professor. He made my 8 am class worth it, as for SA150: His tests are mostly composed of his lecture slides and specific examples that he uses and discusses within the class, so the lecture is a must. And also his papers are worth more than tests. He's very funny, lenient and accessible out of class. Would 100% recommend
Kyle is such an amazing and hilarious prof. Attendance is not mandatory but it's definitely worth it to sit through a whole lecture with him, he relates class topics to things in the real life and makes it easier to understand (with a good sense of humour). Great semester but didn't have a good time with the TA
Kyle is HILARIOUS! Such an amazing prof who is very personable with students! The marking however was BRUTAL! But that is the TA's fault, very inconsistent and would give zeroes for definitions that are exactly from lecture as she wanted it to fit her view. However Kyle was excellent! No final exam which is a plus
Kyle is the BEST professor at SFU, guaranteed. The thing that makes his lectures so great is that he finds ways to relate course content to everyday life, which makes it interesting. He is a very funny lecturer who LOVES memes. Tests are very fair, with no surprises at all. Two term papers are easy. Easiest A+ have ever earned.
Kyle is a great prof. Explains difficult concepts very well in class. There were 1 or 2 lectures where he tried to push a certain view or was biased but other than that he was great.
Hands down one of my favorite profs at SFU. I originally took this course just for breadth but Kyle made the lectures extremely interesting and you will learn a lot of Sociology from him. Only 2 midterm exams and most of the questions come from lecture examples and Kyle makes sure you remember them because of his excellent teaching style and memes.
Makes you work for it but extremely well organized and have amazing lectures.
I had him at the UofA and he is one of the best lecturers I've ever had. Show up to class cuz even tho he posts his slides, he elaborates and explains info orally that is tested on but is not otherwise available. He doesn't like email and he's a little hard to get ahold of outside of class but either that, You couldn't pick a better prof.
I actually remember what we learned in class. Interesting classes and especially, the discussions are engaging. I have a feeling he reads ratemyprof (with all the memes he show in class)
If you are someone taking Soc 100 as GPA booster, avoid him! I got an A in the course and I am 4th year with 3.9 GPA, I actually think the course is hard! There are too much work for an 100 lvl soc course, tones of reading each week, 1 self 1 group paper, 3 exams with some very tricky questions. Average on 2nd midterm is 66% before grade boost.
I loved Kyle's class. He is really passionate about what he teaches and he's enthusiasm and lame jokes makes the time pass by a lot faster. Other than that, SOC 100 is a pretty easy course. Wouldn't recommend taking his class for credit though because he gets into the nitty gritty with the exams sometimes which might affect your score.
Kyle is funny in lectures, but lecture attendance is very encouraged since the handwritten tests are super lecture content-specific. The TAs can also be pretty hard graders when writing papers with very lacking feedback. Tutorials are also do not help with prep for midterms or assignments.
I do not recommend this class at all! He try's to be funny by using memes in class and trys to teach us with trends that are going on within the students and you won't understand it all. You have to participate in tutorials as its worth 15% of your grade. The test are all Written so you have to really understand the course.
Professor Willmott is super funny and he seems like a really genuine caring dude. However all he does is talk about memes and real world social issues and assume you understand what he really is talking about. Lectures are a hit or miss, Tutorials are 2 hours long too and TA's are incredibly hard markers. Tutorials don''t prepare you for anything.
Lectures were amazing, interesting topics and very entertaining. He is very direct, clear with what he is looking for. Very little homework other than readings. Tests are a great format, as long as you understand the concepts clearly you'll do well, no random memorization. Great class, highly recommend
Dr. WIllmott is an amazing professor! Very funny & knowledge guy during lectures & officer hours. But, this class is DIFFICULT. The tests are only composed of WRITTEN QUESTIONS. Tutorials are 2hrs & TA's mark harshly. Tips: Study lecture notes, talk in tutorials, attend lectures, & DO THE READINGS! Only 2 exams, 2 papers, & tutorial participation.
It's easy to pay attention in his class, because he is engaging and charismatic. However, he delivers the content in a tacky, contradictory, and inflammatory way. He makes it quite difficult to respect Sociology as an academic discipline, considering the hypocrisy imbedded in his lecture material.
assignments were more difficult but the lectures have memes and are worth it
Marking on the exams is insanely difficult. Tutorials are mandatory. content is not difficult but the TAs are tough. In tutorial they say that you understand the concept perfectly, then when you carry that into the exam, it's wrong. The class will not be a GPA booster and the grade appeal process is extremely difficult.
I did not enjoy this class. This is a third-year class and this professor taught this as if it was a Master's class. I am normally an A student but for every assignment, I received back I got a C+. Dr. Willmott was not useful to talk to during office hours.
I started out not liking the class because I didn't understand it, but soon grew to love it as the TA I had was amazing and the professor's lectures were informational and fun to listen to as the professor added some entertainment. Showing up to class is necessary and so are the readings, but worth it as it is straight forward.
Kyle is super funny and knowledgable and his lectures are amazing. The exams are short and long written answers only, but they prepare you well for this if you attend lecture and tutorials. His style of teaching is genuinely hilarious and you'll also learn a lot about sociology and different ways of thinking about the world. Highly recommend!!
The prof and TA's would mark everything so tough, without any explanation for why they marked you as poorly as they did. Additionally, for the final exam, it was all written answers and they gave out horrible grades to myself and all my peers and won't give you an opportunity to see your final exam???
Dr. Willmott is absolutely wonderful. His passion for the subject really comes through during his lectures! Super engaging lecturer and great sense of humour, loves making sociology memes. Course is a really great intro to sociology and his TAs are great! Assignments/tests are fair if you go to class and do the readings. Can't recommend enough!
Dr. Willmott is fantastic. Every lecture is fascinating and he seems to really be passionate about the subject matter which makes class even better. His assignments and exams are pretty fair as long as you keep up with the readings and talk to your TA. He's got a great sense of humour and is just an overall cool guy. Can't recommend him enough.
Kyle is a fantastic lecturer, attended every lecture in person just because of how enjoyable his classes were. Kyle explains everything very simply and in an engaging manner. Cannot recommend him enough, also my TA was FANTASTIC, although a bit harsh for marking. overall amazing class, however not an easy A expect B range.
Funny guy, always brought in current events and memes into lectures to keep them entertaining. Class itself is fairly easy: 2 assignments, 2 tests. Explains things clearly and gives you hints about what might be on exams. Tutorials devote lots of time to preparing for assignments, which are also fairly easy.
Dr. Willmott was a fantastic professor. His course is very organized and he makes every lecture super engaging due to his clear passion for the content. TAs are great and tutorials are really helpful for clarifying the sometimes complicated subject matter. Assignments are straight forward and he prepares you well for exams. Overall awesome class!
Kyle was an AMAZING professor! He made me understand the content of SA150 really well!! He incorporates memes and GenZ type of content in the lecture, which I found really fun!! The only con is not Kyle himself, but rather the TAs. Holy- my TA gave my class a C average on our 1st assignment, which was unreasonable. Just pray you get a good TA tbh.
Uses LOTS of memes to teach. The tests are very difficult so is his grading.
Kyle was a great lecturer. His lectures got boring because sociology is pretty boring but he tried to liven it up with memes and his sense of humour. The issue I had with this class was my TA. If you get Ying Zhang (Winnie) as your TA switch out of that class immediately. The 2 hour tutorial with her, was pointless. She doesn't know how to grade SA
this course was a bit dry with it being FULL of definitions but Kyle did make it more enjoyable with his enthusiasm and his love for SA. this is the hardest marked 100 level course I have ever taken. TAs mark very harshly with little feedback. As a 3rd-year whos an A student I really struggled.
Kyle attempts to make the class interesting. He is not personable and difficult to ask him questions. TA's all over the place and unhelpful. Wrote 2 papers and 2 tests. I liked the content but unfortunately the lack of support and help from the TA's ruined the class. Taught one thing then told it was wrong when I put it on the test or in my paper.
Kyle is a great professor and makes SA extremely interesting. I have learned a lot from this class. Lectures were easy to listen to due to Kyle's passion for sociology. However, grading was really tough. Assignments were roughly graded and exams were difficult. Read the textbook and do all of the readings if you want to succeed.
He was okay. I found his lectures to be a bit boring but that may have just been my interest in the subject. He sends out his slides but says many important things that are not mentioned in the slides so make sure to write down what he is saying. My real issue with the course is the tutorials bc the TA's mark VERY hard. Read every article deeply!
Kyle is a really great prof. Although he comes off a bit intimidating at first, the way he presents material is straightforward and easy to understand. He also keeps the class engaged with memes in his slides and a break during lectures. The number of readings are also very fair where they are easy to understand and are pretty short.
I had them in my first semester of university, and he explained expectations exceptionally well. I learned a lot of skills I can carry on in my time here, so I am very thankful. Also, my TA, Yun Zhang, was incredible
Kyle is a very interesting guy. He seems intimidating at first but he is really a great guy who wants the best for you. Where things got tricky was how much he left up to the TAs. If you are like me and ended up with a bad TA good luck. There are two papers and two completely written exams, so everything is VERY subjective and all over the place.
I have mixed opinions on Kyle. He was hard, rude, and unwelcoming towards the beginning of the year, but at the end I weirdly was sad his lectures were done. He makes people feel dumb and scared in class. I found his tests easy and straightforward, he doesnt want you to fail. BUT Winnie is not a good TA. Marked so unfair and many people had issues.
if ur TA is mary berger you won. made everything so easy, idk why ppl say he's rude, he rly is just quiet w/ dry humour. 1 paper, 2 exams & tut participation. exam 1 will be marked hard regardless, avg is always low, so don't worry abt that. read the readings (main ideas), and small definitions bc they will be on the exams. paper was fun.
Dr. Willmott is a decent professor and his lectures were somewhat engaging. He goes through the lecture slides very fast, which makes taking notes hard. SA 150, includes 1 paper, midterm, final and tutorial participation. The midterm was unnecessarily difficult, the class average for the exam was like 50 % and the exam was mostly on articles.
Kyle does not care for you to succeed in this class. He goes through slides extremely fast and makes you feel dumb if you don't understand. Grading criteria very unclear.
An awesome prof. All of the reviews here are from SA150 so I just wanted to give perspective as a student of an UD course he teaches. He is passionate about sociology and student success. He can be intimidating, but he means well and is not as rude as he comes across lol. Best class I've ever taken at SFU. Approach him for an insightful convo!
In his lectures Kyle moved really fast and his slides were very text-heavy. Did not post the lecture slides in advance, but rather waited until after the class making it very difficult to follow along. The TA's were all over the place, but I got luck with Yun Zhang who was an easy marker. 2 papers and 2 exams which solely rely on articles read.
His lectures were content heavy and the midterm and final exams were based on the textbook and lecture material. Slides had so much information on them so it was hard to follow along. The midterm and final had lots of questions on the articles so make sure you take good notes on the articles he mentions in class. Pre-readings are also in exams.
He is very rude when approached with questions and makes it very difficult to feel comfortable or welcomed to approach him. The handful of times I have asked questions, I found him to be very disrespectful and rude with the way he speaks. His lectures are content heavy and it is hard to follow along. Do not recommend.
The class can be enjoyable. Lots of words on slides that makes it hard to follow while he talks. He's very particular about his midterm & final, you need to be VERY specific. Spend lots of time studying the textbook + notes, literally try to memorize EVERYTHING. Gave our class 'advice' on how to study, basically said "KNOW the answer." Obviously?..
Kyle is great, he speaks in a way that keeps your attention but there is so many words on the slides that it's so hard to follow because it sort of jumps around. For me, this class is horrendously difficult. For the midterms its all writing.
(For SA325) I really like this prof overall... He's super caring and really funny. I just found his explanations of course concepts really tough to understand. The PowerPoints have mostly long quotations from tough reads, and participation activities are difficult (and I don't know exactly how they're graded). But he's 100% willing to help students
worst course I've ever taken, huge differences in marking between TAs so the TA you have definitely makes a difference. Lecture slides were content heavy and often impossible to take notes on
TLDR; Passionate prof, unfair grading The midterm and final are unfairly written and graded. All written answers, looking for you to write things that are not specified in the question. The TAs aren't forgiving either. Made me lose a lot of respect for his teaching style. Lectures are interesting and tutorials are helpful
Kyle does not care about the class grades, nor do the TAs. The class average on the midterm was low 50s, and he doesn't do anything. Maybe change the way your TA's mark?? Not good with office hours and simply not very approachable. I took this course as an elective, and it was my hardest class, im not longer interested in Sociology.
Lectures and tutorials are engaging (I had Sarah who is great), you get a lot of help with the paper, and the tests are fair and straightforward. To do well, you need to make sure you can clearly explain the five main theories and the concepts discussed in lecture, and do all the readings. The tests are heavily based on the readings.
I'm a first-year student and took a third course with him SA325 and ended up with a B+. He is one of the most SUPPORTIVE instructors I've had. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. I 100% recommend him.
one of the profs I've come across. You'll never regret taking his class as he is extremely supportive.
AMAZING prof:)))))
do not care about the negative rate here as he is an AMAZING prof. These people just did not make the time to approach him I'd say. Otherwise he is very inspirational.
W lecture skills. L everything else. PLEASE dedicate time to this class. ;(((((
I knew Dr. Willmott personally since I would visit him during his office hours. Dr. Willmott is reliable. Recommended.
All depends on TA. It is ridiculous that the midterm average in my tutorial is lower than 40, and after we receive our grades, TA leisurely told us how her rating policies works. No one cares students succeed. If you are not a related major student, avoid this course.
tests are absolutely ridiculous. Smallest details that aren't even mentioned in lecture and he'll mark u down "just because"....if u ask him why he says KNOW THE MATERIAL???
Took course in 2022, the reason why I'm majoring in Sociology! Lectures were engaging and entertaining & material wasn't too difficult. Keep up with the readings to succeed. Written assignments were fun. He is direct, but a kind and helpful professor. I encourage everyone to take a Sociology course, especially with Kyle if they have the option! :)
If hes your prof, find another time to do this course. The midterm average was 50%, he talks so much, moves around a LOT during his lectures, can be moody. This class requires you to KNOW AND FULLY do your readings otherwise your chance of doing well are very slim. Only took as a req, skip if you do not need, take a different course.
your mark fully is dependent on what TA you get since they mark literally the midterm, essay, and final. Kyles a nice guy, but I wouldn't taking a course with him. the lecture slides are wordy, he moves a lot in class making it hard to follow and he talks fast. Doesn't give you any info of what to expect for the final, simply "study the material".
the professor is an ok but talks way too fast and writes either way too much or way too little on his slides. the class average for the midterm was 50%, he dosent tell you what to expect on the midterm or final it honestly depends on who your ta is because they do all the marking and basically re teach you all the important stuff...
Hardest course of the sem. Lots of reading. Midterm average was below 50%. Participation in tutorials matters - tutorials saved my life. Without them I would be screwed. You need to get lucky with TA otherwise getting good grades is tough. Prof is moody and unapproachable. Lecture slides have so much info and confusing content
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH KYLE! He is very forgetful and will often not respond to emails. The exams weren't even focused on lecture or textbook but on small things that he would talk or mention about during lecture. the grading horrible all depends on your TA. I heard the worst TA will be leaving this semester so that's probably a good thing.
I don't understand the low ratings. His lectures were difficult to follow but reviewing it after class and putting in a decent amount of time to understand the material is also to be expected, especially for a 4 credit course. He's kind and offers extra office hours Do what you will with the 1/5 but don't let them scare u, put in effort and it's ok
Avoid this prof at all costs he is terrible. The marking is super tough and the assignment was not clear at all. Kyle tries to make this lectures interesting by literally yelling and pacing around the lecture hall but its very annoying and doesn't help. He is also extremely rude and unapproachable in lecture and has a very condescending tone. AVOID
Kyle is a prof who is extremely well-versed and passionate about sociology. Yes, his exams are difficult (all written), but they are fully based on lectures and READINGS!! He sometimes uses words nobody understands. He only had a major paper and two exams. Honestly grading is all up to the TA. Overall a good class.
he yells when he teaches so I rarely went. tutorials are mandatory and the TA's are rlly nice and engaging but they mark SO INSANELY HARD. rubric for the assignment didnt have any points on it, they just circle the letter grade you got with no explanation, and dont have office hours after to explain. if you dont have to, DONT TAKE THIS COURSE!
He was engaging and passionate but often condescending and unapproachable. He gave us no information on what to expect on the midterm, and exams and paper were graded extremely tough. The readings are long and required thorough understanding, but tutorials were helpful to actually learn the course material and understand the readings.
I hated this class. He is not a horrible professor, but his TAs are awful (or at least the one I got). I went to her for help on a specific part of my paper, and she said the part was great but gave me a bad mark on it. The TA was also no help at all in tutorials/emails and possibly had the most monotone voice.
Kyle is very passionate, kind, and funny. His lectures were engaging. Towards the end of his lectures there are usually a few slides with a lot of text, and on an off day he'd move through them quickly, but it generally didn't impede understanding. The exams were long; many students had trouble finishing them. Overall Kyle is a great lecturer:)
The prof is very enthusiastic about teaching but his lectures are incredibly unclear and hard to understand. The only way to learn the info is in tutorial. The lecture slides are almost useless. Many of the slides have no information or have way too much writing. After taking this course I don't think i'll willingly take sociology again.
Pretty good prof. you will be expected to read a lot to perform well in this course but he makes topics very interesting. He helps answer questions and makes class interesting as well. I would recommend if sociology is something you are interested.
Kyle was a good prof. His lectures were good and the textbook was fairly easy to understand. I didnt really enjoy the material itself (im not a soc major) but he was a good prof. If u have this class as a requirement, Kyle is a good prof to take it with.
As long as you do all the assigned work (read the textbook, participate in tutorials, review lectures), you will succeed. The midterm and final are all written, be prepared for that. Otherwise I love Kyle, he's a silly guy.
Took his class even after reading all the bad reviews. Should've took them as a warning to not enrol instead of giving him the benefit of the doubt. Wordy slides, inconsistent and harsh grading (some TA's being easier markers than others). Barely scraped by in this class and I studied ALL the time (even went to office hours). Truly unfortunate.
Kyle knows what he's talking about & is a great professor overall. Exams were VERY fair & were on topics covered in lecture. Lots of room on exam for partial marks too. Tutorial participation was mandatory but was very useful in learning questions that were on the upcoming exam
his lectures are funny but do not take this class unless u want a shitty mark. he says his exams are based on your interpretation of the articles. HELL NO! it is based on his interpretations of the articles. when you write the exams, he wants his perspective of the articles, that is the only way you will get full marks.
Kyle's assigned readings were intimidating at times, but mostly focus on the main arguments, concepts and evidence that each article provides. The exam is written answers and really pushes you to be comfortable with the key arguments, but I think I learned a lot of valuable ideas in this class, and they are going to stick long after I've taken it.
Willmott was a pretty good prof. His TA's were great, his only shortcoming is that in my opinion he tried to hard to relate and make jokes that would resonate with his students.
Overall a pretty good professor, you kinda gotta write what he/the TAs want to see tho, and glaze a lil.
