Very good professor, lectures are very interesting and he makes class fun, would 100% recommend, quizzes are fairly easy and all notes are online.
His lectures are interesting and very informative but you do need to read the book for this class. His test are pretty easy as long as you attend class and read the book. Besides one paper there is no homework in this class. But he will yell at you in class if you talk or if you are on your phone.
Dr. K is awesome! The course material can get a bit dry and his lectures can get boring at times, but his sense of humor and niceness make up for it. Posts lectures online, is accessible outside of class, and takes into account class feedback. I'm thinking of minoring in sociology because of him. :)
Go to class and take notes. He takes attendance. Actually get the book and read it. Study for quizzes and tests and you will pass. Does give lots of extra credit opportunities.
His lectures are boring and are very wordy so you have to search for the definition and the main points on the slides. I never read the book but struggled in the class, and he only does 5 quizzes plus a paper so you have to do very well on the quizzes and show up for class in order to keep a good grade. i wasnt the biggest fan of his teaching/class
Dr K will work with anyone that comes to his office and actively attempts to learn. There are only five quizzes and he replaces your lowest quiz by averaging your top two. So, after the first quiz figure out how to study for them or you won't pass the class.
Dr. K is a great teacher. If you show up to class and study just a little bit you'll do fine. 1 easy paper, 5 quizzes, and final. Offers a lot of extra credit and really cares if you succeed. I would strongly recommend taking him.
He is an amazing teacher she worked with us and it was his first year and he was a inspiration to me and help me cagey comfortable with MSU and everything sontake him you wont regret at all...
Awesome class and awesome professor! Recommend Dr. K 100%! His humor alone is worth it. But he also knows his stuff. 5 quizzes, 1 paper, and tons of extra credit. You have to read the book and go to class to do well. Plus, he's cute ;)
Dr. K is the MAN! Really made my first semester at Missouri State amazing. Would def take again. Yes, you have to read and attend class to do well, but the readings aren't that bad, and his lecture style makes coming to class fun. Funny dude, obsessed with Queen Bey, and plays songs before class. Take him!
Absolutely loved having Dr. K. 10/10 Would recommend taking a class with him! He makes SOC easy to understand, and he does it with sass and class. Sad to see the end of his class.
Dr K, is a treasure to MSU. His passion for Sociology and society is inspiring. He is very willing to rephrase any and everything so you can understand it. Great in class discussions talking about relevant topics ( what happened that week in the news). One of my favorite classes and its not even my major
Dr. K is someone I would recommend to everyone. He makes everything clear as water from grading to quizzes to lectures. He is always so willing to answer questions if needed and is always very prepared and dedicated to teaching. Every lecture is available on blackboard and he has office hours that he sticks to strictly. Best professor I had.
Didn't know what demography was before taking his class, and now I am considering exploring career options in population studies. Dr. K provided a good introduction to the field and is passionate about the subject/teaching. A lot of reading, discussion, and student presentations. Attendance is required. NO TEXT BOOK! Funny guy. I recommend him
Dr. K takes a dry subject (research methods) and makes it bearable. Honestly enjoyed coming to class. He is a hard grader and expects a lot, but he also gives really good feedback. Meeting with him one on one definitely helps to clear up any confusion. Only issue is that the course is only out of 100 points.
Dr. K was definitely the highlight of my semester. Super funny and relates to his students. Class is only out of 100 points but he gives great feedback and actively wants you to succeed. If I wasnt graduating next semester Id take another one of his classes.
Dr. K was amazing. Never have I really had a professor that was as caring and concerned about his students as Dr. K. Literally did not know anything about sociology and the only demography I knew was from being a Marketing major, but he really forced me to think critically and develop new perspectives. I loved this class so much!
Amazing professor. His primary goal is making sure you succeed, and thats important! The course content is a tad bit difficult especially since most of it is new, but he makes learning as helpful and easy as possible.
Methods sucks. Dr. K is the man, though
He encourages class participation and discussion amongst ourselves pertaining to the subject, and does so in a way that is enjoyable.
You need the book for this course. His PowerPoint touches on key concepts but to be able to complete bell ringers or random questions you need to be more in depth with the material. Great lectures super funny. Material can be a tad bit confusing if you arent familiar with methods all you have to do is tell him you dont understand
He gives great feedback and wants you to succeed in his class.
One of the best professors I've had at MSU. Gives very insightful lectures that you can use beyond the classroom.
Dr. K is a professor that really cares about his students and their learning. There are two readings each week that are normally around 20 pages and then you post on a discussion board and discuss in class. Hes an accomodating teacher, but you really have to speak in class. Overall great professor that cares and is knowledgable.
Dr. K is a cool guy, but his point system is less than favorable. His classes are only worth 100 points, and everyone I knew who has taken one of his classes hated it. He takes attendance every class period. Also, DON'T BUY THE BOOK! I spent $120 on the book and I used it maybe twice. Don't buy it!!!
There is a reading due almost every class with a discussion question due the night before, but it helps to get all those points and you can skim the readings and be fine. Participation in class discussion goes a long way and helps your grade. The assignments are tedious but easy, and Dr. K is always available in person or email to help!
Dr, K simply put is awesome. Honestly I thought I was going to hate this class, but he did a good job of keeping it interesting. Probably one of the best teachers I've had at Missouri State.
I loved this class a lot. For a Gen Ed, Dr. K makes this class a lot of fun and worth coming to. The quizzes and reflection papers are easy and going to class is definitely worth it. You get 3 free days to miss class before points are deducted but if you're someone who doesn't use them, you get a certain percent of extra credit on the final.
Dr. K is legit. He's a good speaker and is very funny. Enjoyed coming to class. 5 easy quizzes, some easy papers, and one final. He gives extra credit which is dope. Highly recommend this Gen ed course
Highly recommend Dr K! Makes demography interesting and fun. Not too much math (though there is some), and plenty of good conversations. Not too much homework, ton of reading, one presentation and a short final paper. Well worth it!
So the class was supposed to turn in their final essay (worth 25% of the class) on the final day of class online. I however turned mine in in-person about a month before the actual due date. Turns out he gave me a 0% on the project I worked my ass off on. Dropped my grade from a B to a D. I emailed begging for any credit at all. I got nothing.
For a gen ed, intro to society is actually pretty interesting. Dr. K makes sociology fun and relevant to our lives. He values student feedback and tries to adjust his class to meet our needs. Not too much work, though you will have to buy the book and come to every class. I recommend him.
Lectures are easy to pay attention to because they are interesting, but don't bother taking notes because he puts all the powerpoints on blackboard. He gives you a study guide for every quiz and he says, "I make the quiz before making the study guide" Wink wink the info on the study guides are pretty much what is on the quiz and final. Go to class.
Dr. K does a nice job explaining things and makes this gen ed fun. He posts all of his slides and gives pretty good study guides. He also drops your lowest quiz score. Attendance is mandatory, but coming is class is fun, so its not a problem. Great professor!
it's a lecture class, and you don't have to do the book readings if you pay attention during lecture. Dr. K is very entertaining and funny. Super chill dude and only has a few papers and multiple choice quizzes throughout the semester. Made this class super fun. Reasonably easy content.
You have 5 quizzes total, no tests. You have to write reflection papers every so often but as long as you answer question you are guaranteed an A. Highly recommend this course.
I LOVE Dr. K. He's super laid back and casual with lectures, but he really knows his stuff. One of the best courses I've taken at MSU. He gives study guides for every quiz and drops your worst score. He also has a few reflection papers that are easy points throughout the semester.
Straight forward study guides for all 4 quizzes and the final. Reflection papers after each test. Easy and interesting class. Interesting lectures.
I LOVE this class! Dr. K is obviously an expert in his field. If he taught another class, I would take it in a heartbeat! Material is relevant for critical thinking and he makes it all very interesting with his examples. There are reflection papers, but they helped me make connections to the content we were learning in class. Amazing course!
You will for sure enjoy Dr. Ks class! Hes an entertaining professor, you wont ever get bored in class. Make sure to complete homework and study guides are straightforward. Youll be successful in the class if you put effort!
Dr. K is an awesome professor. This is my second time having him in class. He knows his stuff. He expects you to come to class prepared to discuss readings. He requires you have the textbook, but I didn't use it. There are weekly assignments, but they're pretty easy. There's only one test (the midterm) and the final is a research proposal.
Dr. K's class is not one that you can half-ass and still get an A in. But if you're willing to put in the work, it's a really fun and interesting class. Dr. K is funny and real and makes the material applicable to the real world. Be prepared to write a lot, but you can always go to his office and get helpful feedback on your writing.
I really enjoyed this class. There was an assignment every week, but he goes over the homework assignment in class before you turn it in, so you can always add on to your answers. One exam, and it was open note. You have one paper to write too, but he helps you immensely. Overall an amazing class! He also loves Beyoncé, so he is pretty great
He is a great professor; counts attendance, so definitely go to class; very funny and enthusiastic to teach sociology, which makes his lectures enjoyable; posts the PowerPoint slides on Blackboard, which have pretty much everything you need to know (he also posts study guides) so you don't have to read the book to get an A--sorry Dr. K!
Dr. K is a really great professor. The lectures are interesting and the assignments are reasonable. There are 5 thought papers, 5 quizzes, the final, and attendance factor into your grade. The papers are 1-2 pages long and graded fairly. The lectures are interesting. If you take his class, print out the powerpoints and take notes on them.
Lectures are mandatory because Dr. K takes attendance for points, but they are usually pretty entertaining. He is super funny. Dr. K posts the lecture notes on Blackboard, so either print them out before class, or just take notes on what he is saying. Sometimes he goes through the notes fast. There are 5 quizzes that are pretty easy if you listen.
This class was a good class for me to have over the semester but, I wish it was better in terms of extra credit work. Overall, the class was fun; our professor was hilarious and I enjoyed coming to this class three times a week.
Dr. K is such a good professor. He really wants his students to succeed. He is always willing to do whatever to help you out! I have taken him for two classes now and he is just all around a really funny awesome professor!
I would die for Dr. K. He's literally one of the nicest people ever. I want to be his best friend. He's hilarious. The course is not difficult -- he focuses on you understanding and applying the content and if you do what you're supposed to do, you will understand and apply the content. I've taken 2 classes with him and I wish i could take more.
I'm not going to lie, going into this class, I was stressed out because I have serious math anxiety. Dr. K was awesome though. I found Dr. K to be responsive to student feedback and he slowed the course down after the midterm and spent more time going over problems in class. Though I can't say I'm a fan of stats, I can say that Dr. K is the GOAT.
Dr. K is my favorite professor that I've had yet. His class is an easy A if you just show up and pay attention. His lectures are never boring, and he is also making jokes. Take him if you get the chance!
I had Dr. K for methods, and it was my favorite class of the semester. Not an easy A, but if you show up, do the assignments, and meet with him outside of class, it goes a long way to increase your understanding. I wasnt excited about methods going in, but Dr. K made the class worth it. Will be taking more classes with this professor.
Great professor with a clear passion for sociology and teaching. Really gets you and the rest of the class invested and involved in the lecture and class topic. Assignments are enough to keep you interested in the topics while not being intensely time heavy outside of class.
He cares more that you understand concepts rather than memorizing equations. If you hate math and need a stats class I highly recommend him. Tough grader, but if you pay attention in class and use office hours you'll do just fine!
While this class is something that most are forced to take and don't go into it with much interest, Dr. K does a great job at keeping the class lively. As long as you are willing to participate in discussion the class can be as enjoyable as you make it.
He is a great professor. He is funny, gives good lectures, is really helpful if you need help, and is understanding of extenuating circumstances. There are readings every week and discussions every other class where you get to engage with everyone in the class.
His lectures were so interesting and he made it so you actually wanted to go to class. He taught very well and made sure that everyone understood the material. He has 4 quizzes and if you show up to class and study for a little, then it is an easy A. He passed role around everyday and you got 1 free day, but otherwise counted attendance.
Professor Sherman-Wilkins is very intelligent. His lectures are very thought provoking and extremely helpful on quizzes and papers. I enjoyed thinking like a sociologist and have decided to take SOC 152 because this class! Super interesting class that discusses real world problems.
Theres a normal amount of weekly reading/discussion board/occasional homework. Two papers and a midterm. Always enjoyable during class time leaving for COVID was hard, I missed the in-person connections! Grading is even mix between effort and quality so bring your motivation and participation to this class and youll do well!
To say that i really enjoyed this class is an understatement. I do, however, wish I had devoted more time to it. I genuinely got the grade I deserved. Be warned: there is a group project involved with this class, as well as a book report and policy brief. Both are fairly simple, but make sure to carve out time for each.
Dr. K is my favorite professor I've had at MSU so far, and he really helped me discover my love for sociology as a social science. He genuinely cares that you understand the content and presents ideas in a clear way. He also organizes the course work into smaller doable tasks that make it fun! The research proposal project was so fun.
Dr. Sherman-Wilkins, or Dr. K as he has you call him, is fantastic. He teaches a stats class that is less focused on straight calculations, and more focused on interpretation and the understanding of the theory behind the stats. He is very funny, and willing to take time to help individually after class. If you can, take a class with him.
AMAZING PROFESSOR TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HIM!!!
If you are planning to take this class as someone who isn't a sociology major and is a humanities student: DONT. You have to do a ton of math and equations, it is not like any other SOC course I had taken. Dr. K is a fantastic teacher, but if you aren't good with math concepts this is not the class for you.
Kyler is a great professor; really cares about the material and student's interests. There is an excessive amount of reading in this course. Multiple weekly readings and reading quizzes. A midterm (essay and short answer), and a policy brief as the final. I cannot stress how important it is to do the extra credit. You'll want the extra points!
I really enjoyed this class, and I feel that the reason I enjoyed it was due to Dr. Sherman-Wilkins. I was really dreading it originally due to a very unenthusiastic sociology professor in a previous semester, but after this class I feel more excited about sociology and appreciate all of Dr. Sherman-Wilkins advice and knowledge.
Dr K was my favorite professor this semester. I took it online and it was very easy. Just make sure you get all your assignments done right and on time. He gives you all the materials and information needed. Some reading quizzes but easy to take.
Dr. K is not only one of the most intelligent professors I've ever had, but he really knows how to communicate information! Aside from that, he is equally passionate about his field and caring about others. AKA: give a reasonable effort to care and he will meet you halfway. Great class, great prof. Thanks Dr. K!
Professor K has to be one of the best professors I have had the opportunity of meeting at Missouri State University he is real and has a great way of giving great constructive criticism that helps you in the long run. I have much respect for him as a person who cares if his students are successful.
Dr. K is an awesome professor and you can tell that he loved what he taught. He is very understanding and flexible, and I felt like the class taught me a lot. The textbook is mandatory but he provided it, and he stuck to a schedule so you always know what goes on in class. Definitely one of my favorite classes.
Fantastic class, learned a lot and loved every second. Highly recommend Dr. K!
He is one of the kindest professors I've had and you can tell he is really passionate about his field. Take him for SOC 150, you will not regret it. As long as you show up to class and take good notes and you'll do fine. He offers great insight into the topics we discuss and I appreciated that he created a safe environment to share our opinions.
I have never liked and respected a class or a professor so much. He made everything interesting and funny. He knows what he is talking about. One midterm, one final paper, one presentation and two assignments that he explains well. Weekly quiz, reading, and discussion questions. 10/10 recommend. Attendance is needed, but I wanted to go to class.
Dr. K was by far one of my favorite professors here at MSU. He is so passionate about what he teaches, which makes the class more enjoyable. There is extra credit and very few points in this course. As long as you are participating and showing effort, you will do amazing in the class. He is human and very understanding.
Dr. K is a great instructor and can get anyone interested in sociology. He's big on participation, so if you can find someone you like talking to, sit by them so you can do the partner discussions. Left-leaning students will love him, but right-leaning students might not - however, he makes every effort to depoliticize when possible.
Loves his field and cares for all.
Attend classes, and study, and you will do fine. If you struggle, reach out to him during his office hours. He enjoys teaching, and it shows.
Dr. K is awesome and really cares about students and the class. He is very willing to help outside of class and during class. He made statistics understandbale and easier than expected. And fun!
I took SOC 150 with Dr. K in fall 2021 and he was fantastic! He is hilarious, cares about his students, and obviously cares about his field. He is one of those professors that is so passionate about what he is teaching that he can hold anyone's attention. This class was always the highlight of my day and inspired me to do a sociology minor!
Dr. K's class was very interesting and easy. There were Pack Back posts and a reading quiz due every week, but they were easy. His lectures are interesting to follow and hold the answers to his tests. There are about three book reports throughout the year. He is kind of hard to get ahold of outside of class, but he is very smart and a great prof.
Do yourself a favor and don't get on ur computer/phone during his class. He will call you out and yell at you. You will always be in lecture the full time but he does do his best to make it as interesting as possible, and he does. Difficult to get ahold of outside of class. if you need help, attend his office hours. Tests are online and proctored.
Dr. K is an amazing teacher that cares deeply about what he is teaching. He is super down to Earth and although the classes only consisted of lecturing he did make each class interesting. I will say do not get out your phone in class. AT ALL. Overall an amazing teacher & person. Would 10/10 recommend. (5 papers, 3 exams, quizzes, and pack back)
As mentioned by previous raters, Dr. K's course is lecture heavy. However, as long as you take notes, ask questions, and turn in assignments on time, the course isn't too difficult. Dr. K. consistently keeps students informed on what is required and is willing to listen to students complaints.
My favorite teacher i've had so far. Very passionate about his topics and has a very funny personality.
Dr. K is an amazing sociology professor who truly cares about each and every one of his students. Make sure to participate in his lectures, and attend his office hours. He is unbelievably personable and very funny.
Dr. K is great at what he does and also loves what he does. Very content heavy, so buckle up, but majority of the semesters points boil down to a few assignments. Just one exam, the midterm, and the rest are all small weekly reading quizzes and end-of-the-year projects. Great option if you need a honors college elective credit.
The course lacked organization, with materials often being confusing or poorly structured. Furthermore, the instructor was not very approachable or receptive to feedback, which made it difficult to get the help or clarification needed.
There was little opportunity for student interaction or discussion, which made the class feel one-sided and dull.
There was not structure or flexibility. The teacher went on a leave in the middle of class.
I have had Dr. K in person and he is great! Though this is an online course, the structure was on point and I feel that he uses Brightspace very well. Lots of reading, but it is interesting (especially if you're into health related topics). Highly recommend.
