Awesome prof! Always comes up with funny comments and goes off on interesting tangents in lecture. Makes cell bio about as interesting as possible. Great guy!
Very helpful and knowledgable! Will go out of his way to help his students.
makes no sense! kinda funny though.
Sometimes his lectures can be a little boring... but I suposse thats expected with cell biology. Really great guy though and is willing to dedicate a lot of extra time to helping his students!
tests are tough... weird marking scheme... funny?
Lectures can be boring, and tests can be somewhat difficult, but goes out of his way to help students understand the course.
His tests where hard. The review session times are better spent eating chips in front of a TV. Overall he was ok.
NIce guy. actually took the time to talk about different types of questions.
The M/C part on his tests are brutal, the written is not too bad, the study sessions get better as teh semester goes on, just ask lots of questions. Warning... the classes do get a little bit boring..
Really Awesome Teacher. M/C part of tests are really difficult but short answer is easy. He gives lots of hints in lecture about test questions.
I thought he was great...tended to go off on a tangent every other sentance, but other than that His tests were not too bad at all. Really approachable too.
dont take any class with this guy
great notes and made the class interesting. If u are to take this course, i strongly recommend him
His notes are really good, but his lectures enhance them considerably. His tests are fair, if a bit lengthly. I would recommend him, just be aware that he does drift off to tangents a lot!
sooo boriiiing
Excellent overall. Supplies good lecture notes; thorough in his lectures. Tends to try to cover too much material in some lectures. Moderately difficult exams.
He's awful! The guy is just bizarre! He goes on these tangents and you don't know if he tests you on it or not...it's just messed!
Class material was pretty dry, Selinger managed to make some of it fun and interesting. Went on a lot of tangents about his research but it made the class applicable. Very funny guy. Tests were fair and if you study, you will do well. Great teacher to begin biology at university.
One of the best at this school
No Comments
He just didn't seem to care about the people who may be struggling with the content, nor did he seem to care that his tests were too long. Just didn't seem to care about the students.
Tests are very long, Tangents are annoying, hes a bit of a firecracker, seems to get mad at questions and doesn't seem to care much about students. Study though and you will be ok.
Very rude to people who asked questions that he must have thought were not worth answering. Very boring and went off onto sooo many random tangents. DO NOT TAKE CLASS WITH THIS GUY
I thought he was really rude if you didn't understand and tried to ask questions. Also i found him very condecending when your class didn't do well on a test( which is most of the time).Bio is my major and i was very disapointed with this class.I really wish he was not the only bio 1010 teacher!
There was no mystery out of what was expected on exams. clear and condensed notes online. Before exams he held 2-3, 1-2 hour long review sessions out of his own time. Makes funny but corny jokes. And to top it all off, he says almost every year he pads at least 5%+ onto final marks. When hes sarcastic in respns to ppl Qs u will find its foun
This teacher has very useless and random lectures. His notes do not contain enough information, and what you need to know for the test is UNCLEAR. Too much is expected from this class. DO NOT take it from this prof, but i`ve heard other teachers for this class are IMPOSSIBLE TO UNDERSTAND. Be careful.
first midterm (and all other tests after) were a kick in the pants! studied hard but it didn't matter. lectures were boring as hell, can't stand this guy. I will never take a class with him again. too bad he's the one that teaches 1010
Really good teacher. Go to his review sessions for exams....he drops hints about what is on the tests. Also study his old midterms he posts online....he seems to use questions off them. its a tough class with a lot of material to learn, but if you go to lecture and read each assigned chapter a couple times there is no reason you cant do well
When you attend his lecutres, you think that you understand all of the material, but once it comes to the exams, his questions can be totally random. He has review sessions that do help a little, but he expects things from his exams that he never really discussed in class. Definately not my favorite class.
what he emphesize in class has nothing to do with the questiions , not enough time in the first midterm, the questions in exam is not clear at all.
This professor loves to hand out 1% assignments that he deems "easy" which are extremely difficult and will require hours of time to complete. His class time is a waste of time. His marking is unfair. The workload in this course is about 3x heavier than any other course I've completed and I'm in my last year of a science degree. Do not recommend hi
Terrible prof. His lectures are pointless and dry, his tests are ridiculously hard and on completely random stuff that isn't covered in lecture. Always talks about his research, although it has nothing to do with the course. Awful! Avoid him at all costs!
People who complain about Brent just aren't willing to put the work in. He is very willing to help outside of class time and if you just WORK HARD then it is a very do-able class. Study and you shall succeed!
He posts all the notes online, so it is not necessary to attend. I missed a week, and just read the notes, and I passed everything that was asked. The tests are pretty much based off of his notes.
He seems like an awesome guy, willing to take criticism and suggestions on how to do better, but he doesn't cover the material well in class, he will spend tons of time on some subjects and completely skip over others. The notes have soo much information it is hard to know what to look at. Tests are hard.
Brent Selinger is an amazing professer. He covers everything in class and the tests really test if you have been listening and his classes really do help you learn. He is my favorite teacher, and I love his classes. He is an amazing professor. He works hard to create material for class and he should get lots of vacation time and lots os money. <3
This was the worst class I have taken in my entire University Career. I am a straight A student and found this class brutal. The expectations are unrealistic. He does post his notes, and you are expected to rote memorize all 100 single spaced pages of them. In class explanations are rambling and awful. If you don't have to take it don't do it!!
Enjoyed his class, tests were fair if you studied hard off the online posted notes. Having the lab worth 50% of grade is tough. Lab is marked really hard.
He does not hand you the answer, instead he makes you work for it; if you actually pay attention in class and have a good biology background you will do well without studying. However if you do not you will have to work in his class.
He gives you 15 pages of single spaced notes for each topic. All the test questions come from those notes. Basically, memorize the notes and you will do great. I didn't used the text much. He can't go one class w/o mentioning E. coli 0157:H7. Makes fun of himself a lot. He is overall a decent guy.
Test are difficult, studying and attending lectures are mandatory
Tests were brutal. Unless you religiously study his 8-page single spaced notes, you will be completely lost on his tests. He's helpful enough and wants to see everyone do well, but his tests throw you off too much. Basically, the lab portion of the class is what saved my grade.
Memorize his notes for tests, basically. He does not do a good job in the lectures of sticking to the things that will be on the test. Lab is marked hard. And why does he not just make the tests have fewer random questions that no one studied instead of making it super hard and bell-curving the crap out of everyone's grade?
His tests are basically his notes for bio 1010, in saying that, there are an absolute ton of notes. If you are willing to memorize his notes, you should be able to do just fine. Brent is a really nice guy too.
I'm sure brent is a good researcher, but not a great lecturer... He over complicates everything, goes on and on about stuff you don't need to know and never want to know. He is difficult to approach, can be quite condescending and difficult. Overall the class was easy, just memorize his lecture notes, but you'll be so glad when it's all over.
Brent is a great prof. He makes lots of jokes and does his best to boost marks with bonus assignments. His tests are difficult so prepare to work hard for your grade. He is very approachable and I felt comfortable asking questions in lecture, even someone was dead wrong he wasn't rude about it or embarrass anyone.
His class almost put me to sleep, definitely not the most inspiring prof. But he posts his notes for every chapter, and all tests are based of those. If you just study his notes you'll be fine.
I've had lots of profs - Brent is the most scatterbrained I've ever seen. His lectures are all over the place, he goes into depth on things that he really shouldn't so you don't know what's important. He over complicates the simplest subjects. He uses iClickers so you have to show up. I just do homework in lecture cause I can't follow his thoughts.
Although he knows his material well and he is a nice guy, he is not a very good teacher. He is unclear in his explanations while teaching. He does provide notes, which are somewhat helpful in their content (however, they are messy).
Don't take this class unless you have to; if you have to, I'm sorry. This is the biggest waste of your time. You have to go to class because he does in class questions, but whether you pay attention or not you will still have to teach yourself the material on your own time. Worst. Class. Ever. I was a bio major but switched because of this course.
Worst professor I have ever had. Nice man, but scatterbrained. Disorganized/non-linear lectures that are useless to got to but you have to because of clicker questions. Tested on the extensive notes he posts on moodle (only teaches 1% of this in class). Many students fail midterms. He didn't teach me anything. I taught myself this whole course.
Probably one of the worst profs I have had. His lectures are unorganized, non-linear, non-informative, and basically pointless, but since you have clicker questions you have to go. Claims his tests are easier than they used to be, but he still pulls super specific material he didn't even lecture about and throw it in the midterms. Taught myself.
I really enjoyed Brent's class, though the course itself was very difficult Brent tried to explain things as thoroughly as possible and was always available for outside help. His clicker questions were fair and were a great way to get bonus marks if you showed up for class. Would highly recommend this prof!
Hes an okay teacher just expects students to know exactly what he is teaching no matter if its new or not. his exams are based heavily on his notes. when the class does poorly on a test he can be quite condescending about the marks
His lectures are hard to learn from. He looses his train of thought often and gets sidetracked, but you have to go to class to get your iclicker points. If you study his notes really well then the exams are doable. The average of the second midterm was only 52% but by the end of the class he scaled up the class.
His tests are ridiculously hard. Most people I knew were sure they would fail the course. The lecture notes were pointless as his tangents didn't show up on tests. Study the notes he posts online well and you'll pass at least pass.
I found Brent to be a great instructor. He uses lots of visuals to aid learning. He goes slow and repeats concepts as necessary. Exams are fair but study hard for them. Nice and willing to help all the time. Great class; would take again.
AMAZING
Amazing at teaching and made the course interesting. Also very nice and caring.
Lots of material covered, lots of memorization. Practice questions help. Course was co-taught with Laurie Pacarynuk, which made it quite disorganized in my opinion. I know a bunch of people who complained about how hard it was, but I ended up doing ok.
Lecture was fairly straightforward; he provides detailed notes so attendance is not mandatory. They were pretty boring anyway. Weekly quizzes were kind of a pain as they sometimes had some pretty tough questions.
Lectures provide no insight into what is actually going to be on the exam. The lectures are boring and not the least bit engaging. He's not encouraging AT ALL, and provided a speech before the final that increased stress-levels. He does not explain concepts but rather just states what you should know. Does create and post helpful notes though!
Brent was a really nice person, but he was extremely boring and failed to inspire me to care about anything in this course. He assumed we knew a lot more than we (or at least I) did. His slides were a mess which made it hard to take my own notes in class (however, he provides other supplementary notes). I would avoid him for bio 1010 if possible.
He is ok: not great, but not bad. But it definitely wouldn't be tolerable if he didn't post his chapter notes on Moodle. Didn't read the text, went to lecture about 5 times, BUT I read all of the chapter notes in great detail, and got A+. Seems hard to approach and takes his time to reply to emails. Seemed pissed when I asked a simple Q on final.
Brent's lectures are disorganized, loaded with unnecessary information, and his quizzes frequently focus on minute details. He does provide lecture notes of everything you need to know, but be prepared to learn EVERY detail of 200 typed pages to earn that A.
Brent was an overall average prof. Entire course is based on the textbook so attending lectures isn't a must. Lectures can be very boring and he doesn't cover the material as well as he should. Midterms are quite difficult so study the textbook chapters to do well. DO NOT rely on the lectures alone.
Brent's tests are awful. They are a combination of random science facts, details, and application questions where he gives marks for ridiculous "common sense" answers. Sometimes his questions are hard to understand as well. Memorize everything there is to know about science and read his mind and you'll be fine. RIP ME
He is one of the worst profs i ever had. Saving grace is he gives word docs with decent notes... But the notes page and the power point hes teaching does match so it doesnt even matter. Going to lecture is useless because he rambles on about random stuff.. Labs are fun but good luck trying to learn anything.
Brents lectures always get off topic, he always talks about burgers. today he went on about a chocolate factory that had nothing to do with bio. He always explains stuff that has no relevance to his tests. study his online notes hard cause the tests are hard.
Brent is brutal. please find a different prof for this class, he talks about everything but bio
Brent seems like a nice guy, but his tests are impossible. I even tried asking my lab instructor what the answer to one of his test questions were and he didn't even know. Brent's lectures have nothing to do with bio, he always talks about burgers.
Brents notes online are very good, but they don't explain anything on the tests, his lectures are boring and he always tries bringing in excitement in the room by talking about burgers. nobody cares about the burgers as they all want to learn!
The lectures were all over the place and the slides used did not match with the notes provided. The notes were excellent however the lectures were poor. The lectures were pretty boring and dry. I love bio and this class proved to be a disappointment because it didn't excite me anymore. Brent also was extremely rude to a student who had midterm Qs.
Worst prof ever. Goes on random rants that are irrelevant to bio. Gives details on personal life we dont want to hear.
One of the worst. Don't take him. Lectures are awful and he just talks at you. Try to avoid taking him!
Not good, can NOT break concepts down or explain well. Lectures are all over the place and lecture slides do not match up with notes given, would NOT recommend
Brent was an excellent professor. His exams were relatively straightforward if you actually put in the work. Also, Brent was just a genuinely nice guy that was passionate about seeing students succeed in his course.
Brent is very unorganized, jumps around a lot in lectures, and very vaguely describes complex topics. He does post summary notes of each chapter which is nice. His exams are oddly specific, usually a combination of multiple choice and long answer, fairly difficult if you don't study extensively. Lab is also very difficult.
This first year course is very dry, and the tests are very specific. Whatever you think is not going to be on the test probably is.
Brent is an excellent professor that really wants you to succeed! He even gives you the possibility to get bonus mark (5% !!!). AND he is funny and interesting. If you study the lecture notes in detail + read through the textbook + online exercise + mastering assignment then you'll get an easy A. Yes it's a lot but it's a biology class!
He lost himself in most lectures and by the end of the semester; we didn't go over the last 3rd of the module for the final which made us work for it. For this one midterm, there was a short answer which he only explained after the midterm closed which made me mad as it would have been useful to know how to approach it before that.
I would not recommend Brent, he is very disorganized in his lectures and most of the material being tested is very specific. Unforgiving marker and very specific in what he expects for written response. Blamed the bad midterm marks on 'lack of effort' from students. A nice guy outside of the classroom, but did not help my success.
Long lectures. No idea what he's going on about half the time. The diagrams he drew were really helpful though
Brents teaching style is horrendous. The lectures would stir you away. Most of the time in lectures, hed go off tangent. His tests were horrible as well. I had Im in Bio 1010 as well and he was horrible. If there was another prof teaching the course, i would of taken it with them.
his lectures just felt so pointless and off topic all the time, I did find his word document notes very helpful but would've done better just studying those then going to lecture and being very confused
I knew my material and attended lectures. Barely passed the first midterm. There is no in-class participation. He jumps around a lot. All I can say is not only know the material (Which there is ALOT), but know how the heck to use it. The questions are hard, and are applied questions. Keeping up in this class is a full-time job. Hard marker.
I am going to avoid taking another class with professor Selinger for the rest of my degree. Very difficult to follow in lecture, he does provide word documents to help you study but he often reads them word for word during lecture and does not actually teach the material. Lots of learning was done outside of the classroom. Nice guy, bad prof.
I really loved this class when I took it. He was super helpful!
You won't know any material if you don't go to lectures, even if lectures don't help you
Brent did not teach this course well. The lecture grade is made up of two midterms and a final, which were extremely difficult with very limited time. He doesn't care at all about his students' success and is very unapproachable for questions. His lectures come straight from the textbook, so the course is basically self-taught.
Brent made this class the hardest class I've ever taken. Inconsiderate, made tests impossible on material not from lecture nor textbook, and did not give us close to enough time on midterms. No sympathy because he "has a photographic memory". Don't bother asking him questions because "you should know this". Don't take a class with him
I will try to avoid taking another class with him again. As an online class, he treated the zoom classes like office hours and then ended up cancelling them. he was never clear on what was required for testing and was very vague in answering questions. Overall, try to avoid a class with him
Professor treated online learning like a vacation. He only gave midterms and any course material from his lectures meant little to nothing. You could go to his zoom lectures (if he decided to come) and it wouldn't help with anything in the class. Also, all of his midterms are 60 questions in 60 minutes and the final is 120 questions in 3 hours.
Brent treated online schooling like a holiday. His attitude that online learning was easier than the in class learning led to him giving insufficient times for midterms and the final. Which in the lecture portion midterms and finals are the only things that count toward grades. He was very inaccessible to e-mail and would frequently cancel Zoom's.
The absolute worst professor that I have ever had. That seems like an over-exaggeration, but he treated this as a vacation (as others have noted) and hardly shows up for his Q and A sessions (if he doesn't cancel them) and sends out a mass email after every test stating that we didn't know the material well enough. I wonder why......
Literally the worst professor I've had. As if the materials weren't already complicated enough, he made it impossible to get a good grade for this class. His exams are impossible, Finals are 120 questions under 120 minutes since he said it was 'fair game'. It's only considered fair game if he actually did teach.
This class was one of the hardest classes I took at uofl. I spent weeks studying for every single test only to have not enough time to even finish it because of the rediculous time limits. The amount of stress from this class was way more than it was worth for the credit. I got in trouble everytime I asked a question. Don't take this class.
Honestly this class was a joke. He acted as if switching to an online mode of learning would automatically make things easier for students. His recorded lectures didn't seem to provide any help at all, neither were the 'textbook notes' he provided. Furthermore, you are graded by two midterms and a final exam (as well as the lab).
He was the worst professor I have ever had. His exams were difficult. The first midterm was more questions than time. Always cancelled q and a's.
Professor Selinger was not a good professor. He would read word for word off the slides and never really go into depth on what we were learning. He would constantly give attitude and end the Q and A's which was unacceptable if you ask me. The test were crazy hard and the final was so hard to the point that most people failed it.
The worst professor I had this year, showed little regard for the success of his students. Exams were extremely difficult, and you were given a very short amount of time to write. He was very unapproachable, often cancelled Q&A sessions and degraded students who asked questions. I would avoid a class with Brent at all costs!
Another teacher could teach you more in a day than Brent could teach you in a whole semester. Save yourself the tears and take something else.
terrible lecture videos, montone, hard to follow and never went into depth about anything but somehow each chapter video ended up being 120 minutes. condescending and laughed at us during Q and A sessions. Very very low class average (which isn't something to brag in class btw) . Very confusing questions on exams and too short of a time limit.
Brent was extremely helpful and approachable all throughout the semester. He can sometimes over explain the material but I see that as a good thing as it shows his dedication and love for Biology.
