This teacher is very cool... But if you're looking for an easy A, try Pape. Burrill will do a great job teaching but you better be ready to do all the work!!!
Not an easy A, but a very cool class. Cares about her students a lot
Very good class, but like everyone else says, you want an A, you have to work hard for it. Goes the extra mile for her students. Always energetic to teach with a smile on her face. Want to actually learn something, take her class.
Ms. Burrill is an exceptionally devoted instructor who goes above and beyond the call. She is clearly knowledgeable, as well as passionate about the subject matter of which she teaches. Burrill creates a comfortable and welcoming academic environment that
Her Eng 1B class was awesome. I had a lot of fun. Her teaching is simple and easy and she helps you out a lot with essay's if you tell her what exactly you wanna write. The reading she assigns are also interesting.
a really nice lady w/ a great sense of humor. never want to find an excuse to miss her class. turn in a paper each time you attend a class. but it's a piece of cake. a fun writing class you'll enjoy in college.
Little skeptical about the women's focus, but loved it later on. Reading/essay topics were interesting and easy to write about. Really helpful
Really helped my grow as a writer. Much more focus on the actual writing process rather than mundane technical details. Not an easy A, but you learn a lot.
burrill is a fantastic teacher! i recommand you to take her english classes, anyone is fun. take advantage of this teacher cos she's there to help you improve your essay writing skills. although she's very tight about your grammar. awesome teacher indeed! thanks so much, you're my life saver.
Don't expect an easy A in this class. She hates it when you don't cite on your essays. This class deals with gender. If you are a femanist, this is the class for you! The first couple of essays, she grades them easy, but after the 3rd, she is strict. She is always helpful in and out of class.
This class should be called an Honors class. If you have superior writing skills and are looking for an intellectual challenge, take this teacher. She is very kind and understanding as well. Great teacher!
Burrill was very helpful, and class was always nteresting. There is a lot of reading towards the end, but she is usually very flexible with the schedule. Always willing to help a student, interesting class material
AMAZING! Burrill is by far my favorite teacher I've ever had at west valley. This class was awesome, I learned so much about myself and women. Thank you! Class topics were random and controversial yet intriguing. Everyone should take a class with her.
She has great knowledge of the material, and is very commited to helping her students with their needs. I would absolutly recommend her for someone who is serious about the subject of English.
Great teacher, makes things interesting. Will work with class if changes need to be made.
Great teacher, willing to help you when you need her, understandable teacher
She was a very helpful teacher. She knew the subject matter very well and made class interesting. Helped me learn how to write better essays. Allowed us to write about whatever we wanted, so we were interested. Gave lots of feedback.
AWSOME TEACHER!! HIGHLY RECOMEND TAKING!
One of my favorites! She has a passion for literature and free thought. You will work in this class but the class discussion are very helpful.
Leigh is the bee's knees!!! She's the only teacher I've taken consecutively for three semesters, and it has been well worth it. Tutoring at the Writing Center, I can report that her courses are the most sought after in the English department. If you want to challenge, enlighten, and reconstruct your perception of the world, take one of her courses!
I took her over the summer. It was her first time teaching a Women's Studies class but she did a GREAT job! The class was interesting and everything was based on group communication. We had journals that we had to write based on personal topics and it was really easy. Lots of sharing and class discussions. Everyone had this sort of "bond" too! =D
Leigh is an incredible teacher and an incredible person! She brings a sense of humor to her teaching that makes even the most boring of topics (i.e. proper puncuation) intersting. She genuinely cares about her students and her class is challenging enough to make you think ... AN EXCELLENT PROFESSOR I hope she continues teaching for years to come!
This was an interesting class with good readings and good movies, everything ties together. Leigh is a great teacher, she is always ready to teach and have fun. She is also very helpful. All in all a great person.
Leigh is a great, dedicated, and enthusiastic teacher. One of the best! Do the work and follow the rules of what she is teaching and you'll do fine. Yes she's strict in citations... it's a College English class!
Great teacher. I hate English, but it's always nice to have a teacher that makes it fun. Talked a lot about sex in her gender studies class, good times. Grades are very fair, no problems at all. Highly recommend!!
Wonderful teacher. Very straight foward. Keeps you entertained. Highly educated and on sensetive subjects is very open, understanding, and unbiase. 6 pop quizes on reading. reading due every class period. 3 essays and one project for final. Easy class if you attend and gives out extra credit. TAKE HER!! SHE WILL CHANGE YOUR OUTLOOK ON MANY THINGS
Leigh Rocks - Plain and simple! She is one of the greatest teachers I have ever had an opportunity to take classes from. Subject matter is interesting, entertaining, and challenging. She makes you laugh, makes you work hard, and is willing to help you every step of the way. I would highly recommend her classes to anyone. WVC is lucky to have her!
She is absolutely amazing! Very helpful with essays. She totally kept my interest in the class. Her reading material was amazing. A definite must take because she will change your perspective. The best part was her class discussions, because she won't judge you. I also got to see some great movies!
Leigh is an amazing woman and professor! She is so knowledgable and her class rocks. She has very thought provoking material which she helps the class to dissect and understand. GREAT teacher, AMAZING material, WONDERFUL class! Take WS 001 with her! A lot of girls take it, but its important guys do too...it will change your perspective entirely!
Leigh is an amazing teacher. I also recommend taking her Eng 1C class. She will change your entire perspective on life! She's a fair grader and very approachable. I always love the textbooks she gives us. She has amazing taste in literature. My best experiences were in her class because she involves the students in very insteresting discussions.
I've taken 3 different courses tought by this great women. She's passionate about what she teaches, and a great person. She is the best teacher i have ever taken Every one needs to take a class from her. She challenges you to think for yourself and to be creative. She is one of the most insperational feminist I have ever been so lucky to have met.
Ms. Burrill is an excellent teacher; she is the best at West Valley College! She is knowledgeable and full of energy. Very open-minded and helpful! Teaches very well and is very clear! Not an easy grader but a fair grader.
You'll love Ms. Leigh, she is pretty cool and funny she makes English seem easier. take a class with her. she is the best
I love this teacher..she is awesome..she always made me laugh in class. Highly recommend her and i would definitly take her again!!!
This was my favorite class/prof. I have ever taken at WVC(out of 70 units!)I learned so much from her it was amazing.I got 100% in her class. She offers opportunities for extra credit, unlike a lot of professors!I wish I could take her classes every semester. She is easy to approach & makes time to meet with her students despite her other jobs at WVC.
Leigh is an excellent professor and a great person. I have taken three classes from her: English 1B, Women?s Studies, and Modern Fiction and always looked forward to her classes. She is passionate about what she teaches and is always willing to go the extra mile for any student who asks for help. The selection of books and material in Modern Fic
( rest of comment below) The selection of books and material in Modern Fiction were thought provoking and always interesting. I especially loved her women?s studies class, which changed my perception of many things in the world. She is part of the reason that I was inspired to be WS major. I would highly reccomend her to anyone
Honors Modern Fiction was a class that fit my schedule and helped reach my goal of graduating with honors. Leigh brought this class to life the minute she walked into the classroom. The books and discussions were so wonderful we didn't want to leave at the end of class. Leigh gives each student every opportunity for success.
Leigh is a wonderfully enthusiastic professor. Her class discussions were incredibly engaging and she creates a respectful and supportive environment for students. Not only is the class material unique and interesting, Leigh's scholarly approach doesn't take itself too seriously-- we analyzed Lady Gaga's Telephone music video on our final.
This is the best teacher I've ever had, I would highly recomend her. Her women's studies 1 is such a great class, she has time for every student. I don't think I've ever learned more from a teacher.
I had ms. burrill for two classes, modern fiction and WS 1. By far the best teacher i've had at west valley. She makes her classes fun and helps her students out. I got As in both of her classes. HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TAKE HER! you wont regret it!
Professor Burrill is the best teacher I have ever had! Easy A as long as you attend each class, keep up with the reading and participate in class discussions. She is very enthusiastic about her job which make for a great class.
She is one of the best teachers I've ever had! She is very helpful, she would review all my essays with me before they were due. She's always there for her students.
She is a very good teacher but she pushes too much towards the students. This can be very difficult for the ones that are working and trying to balance school as well.
Amazing Professor, she loves what she does and it really shows. She really cares about her classes and students. Took Four classes with her, learned something new every time. Not super easy, but very interesting. Not just one of the best @ WV, but one of the best instructors I've ever had, period. She has magical powers to shift the metal paradigm.
Easy A if you do the reading. (So do the reading.) She might have been too easy. But I liked her all the same. Great subject and her way of teaching it does it justice.
Great teacher! She is obviously passionate about what she is teaching which makes coming to class so much better. Lots of writing involved(it is an English class) and lots of reading so stay on top of the reading. There will be pop quizzes on the reading. Come to class every day, you get extra points for not missing a class.
She is great! She improved my writing so much. She is so helpful. Go to office hours. Her class is very fun!
For English, you literally don't get better than Leigh. She's thoughtful and energetic, truly loves the material and genuinely wants students to find a personal connection to works. She can be tough with work standards and grading but, if you go to class, read , and participate in discussions, she'll throw you a bone. She made my WVC experience!
Leigh is an awesome English teacher. She's definitely one of the best at West Valley. She's very enthusiastic about her job and offers very helpful insight to assist in the development of students' writing skills. If this wasn't my last English class, I'd take her again. She has definitely made an impact on my writing skills.
I think this class was difficult when it came to the writing assignments. And after spending days working on a 6 page paper to get only a c was discouraging. Do the extra credit because it will save your butt. Most homework is reading but prepare yourslef to be quized the next class. If given the opportunity I would have taken a different class.
She is undoubtedly the best teacher at West Valley College. Highly recommended for anyone hoping to actually learn.
I don't recommend her. She only reaches out to you if she has bad news for you. She's quite strict and does not allow any possible exceptions to be made. Her ideals are just as strict and if you and her differ in your ideas or opinions your grade will suffer for it. Save yourself the trouble and take this class with someone else.
Fantastic teacher, very engaging and interesting course. I recommend it to everyone.
She is an awesome teacher! Very fun and easy-going class. Enjoyed all the interesting topics we discussed. Discussion based class, so you're able to get others opinions and thoughts. Very much recommended!
Super nice, super clear, very good class, easy if you read the books (Dorian Gray, Maurice, Mrs Dalloway, Giovanni's Room, The Price of Salt, Girl meets Boy), can't miss more than 4 days of class, can be a very minimal work class, interesting discussions, funny, very welcoming, top notch teacher, plus she is very good looking.
Awesome instructor. Tons of experience and very knowledgeable. Cares about *all* her students. Material was treated with lots of respect. Easily approachable. Do the reading and participate in discussions! You will be rewarded and enriched in so many ways for it. Loved this class.
Having had Leigh for multiple classes before, I can say with ease that she is one of the best professors on campus-- really cares about students. She inspired me to pursue Womens Studies! Her courses are always very discussion intensive (do the reading!), which makes classes engaging and really helps the material to stick.
Leigh does not teach easy material, and for that, she is one courageous professor. Her classes are reading intensive, and require one to engage with both the emotional and the intellectual aspects of the course load. Personally, I definitely felt a huge sense of accomplishment after completing her English and Women/Gender Studies courses!
I must admit that woman studies still isn't my thing. Leigh really helped me out and knew I was struggling. She never gave up on helping me out. She really cares about her students. Her course was pretty intense but hey if I managed, so can you.
I had high hopes for this class but was ultimately disappointed. It's okay for the most basic grasp of feminism but not for anyone who's even remotely aware of concepts beyond the most basic ones beforehand.
I normally don't really like English but I really loved this class. She is really fun, entertaining, and has a great sense of humor. She makes the subject very interesting. I really looked forward to going to each class. Best English teacher I have ever had. Do yourself a favor and take her class!
Focuses a lot on gender studies which I was pretty interested in. She's incredibly helpful. When you go in during office hours she will actually sit down and actually help unlike some teachers that just kind of rereads the instructions. If you don't do well in the class it is because you don't follow directions and have no idea what's happening.
She is seriously the BEST teacher I have EVER had. She wants people to participate but it honestly helps you in the long run. She is so cool and makes it super easy to learn everything she teaches you. Honestly the best English teacher I have ever had and I plan on taking her for every single English course I need! The class was perfect.
Leigh Burrill is FANTASTIC. She makes you want to participate and pushes oneself to think abstractly from what your used to. I look forward to taking another of her courses. Great sense of humor. Pretty much want to be her.
Leigh is an amazing professor. Her class is heavy on discussion and participation, which paves a way to get to know your classmates and the subject. She's passionate and everything she says is thought-provoking. She tries to get to know her students, which will give you the confidence and ease to speak out loud. Would recommend this class.
I took Burril's English 905 class over the summer of 14. By far the most inspirational, and most helpful teacher I've experienced in my academic career. She really challenges you when you ask questions, she makes you think and will incite great conversation, so she's really easy going. Definitely going to take another class with her. Take her!
I am so glad I took Leigh's class. She is def a tough grader, so go to the writing lab to make sure everything is perfect; she will take lots of points off. The below comment is very accurate but she is so inspirational and makes you think above and beyond. Just don't know if anyone is up to her standards.
We essentially read a textbook cover to cover. 2 presentations were the majority of your grade, and class discussions were based around an individual's presentation/interpretation of the text. Poor class time management. 1 (hard) test, 1 paper. She takes points off if you miss/are late to class, and participation is a must. Difficult to follow.
She's a nice lady but this class was all sorts of bad. Four assignments make up your grade, so if you get even one low grade... good luck. It was very self-taught and the midterm was basically memorizing half a 800 page textbook + additional text. I could have just bought the textbook and memorized it, and it would have been the same.
This was a very philosophical, metaphysical class that probably isn't for everyone. this class integrates postmodern literature, mythic revisions and queer theory in a challenging but rewarding way. Leigh always explains things well and works to make the class accessible to people. Don't take this class if you're not ready to think critically.
I appreciate the work Leigh puts into her classes. She does have a lot of material to read, but each piece expands your knowledge on the subject and makes you capable of forming and sharing an opinion in the class. She creates an environment for students to own their views and discuss them with the class while encouraging changing view points.
Do your readings and share your opinion. This is a great introduction to the history of Women's Rights and Feminism as well as discussing and critiquing current feminism and where it is headed. The class is wonderful for academic as well as personal development. Highly recommended. Leigh is a wonderful professor who is passionate about her classes.
Only four assignments, including the midterm, make up the grade, but they are worth crazy amounts of points; nothing is worth less than 200pts. I did not like how the class was basically led by one student each class session and then conversation was spurred by the students. This didnt help me learn because class felt lacking in direction.
There was a lot of reading, but honestly it was always super interesting. If you don't do the reading, you'll have no idea whats going on in class. Love the feminist perspective she takes on everything. She offers extra credit in the form of "bonus points", she says the max she will award is 20, but I did everything so she gave me more. Love her.
Love her so much !! i was going through it last semester and she understood everything and she worked with me to help me get what i needed don. she went out of her way to help me and i couldnt have been more grateful i love her so much and i hope things continue to go well for her shes the sweetest person <3 love you leigh !!!
I took Professor Burrill's online English 1B class in the Summer. Even though there was lots of reading and writing assignments, it was fairly easy. She is very clear on her expectations and she is always willing to help if you need it. Do not buy the books, she provided all the reading assignments via PDF.
She's a pretty chill professor. A lot of the class time was spent on mini presentations that prepare you for the final. Reading the book(s) is very important, but they're really interesting so its not hard. Her feedback is specific and kind and she tends to mention something you did well when giving feedback which is nice.
Not good, very liberal approach to everything. If you differ on views then she grades you differently. She is a very tough grader and you only have a view essays which are the bulk of your grade. If you're looking for an easy A then don't take this class. You pretty much have to bash men in every way for her to give you an A.
Good teacher, terrible class. Unless you really enjoy reading about mythology, and I mean REALLY enjoy reading mythology, this class is NOT for you. Look, I'm a pretty good student, and I happen to like English, but I enjoyed none of this class. She's a really caring teacher and she'll help you succeed, but it's a semester snooze fest.
I took online English 1B with Professor Burrill in the Spring. Definitely my favorite online teacher so far and a great professor. Interesting material. She gives thoughtful feedback on nearly every assignment and all her assignments are reasonable. She is very understanding and even checked up on me when I missed a few assignments in a row.
If you struggle in English and youre looking for a good professor. Dont look any further! I honestly struggled in the class (personal issues) and Professor Burrill understood and helped me pass the class! I am seriously grateful for her! We definitely need more professors like her!
Leigh is one of the best professors I have ever had. I took 2 classes with her and she was amazing for both. She's very passionate and caring and puts time and energy into her teaching. Gives some extra credit opportunities which are always helpful! I love her touch of feminism and social justice in every class she teaches. Definitely take her!
Professor Burrill is a fabulous teacher. She's very engaging, always on top of everything with the class. There's a lot of reading and participation but she makes you want to do it and enjoy it. Her feedback is the best I've ever received from a teacher, she takes the time to criticizes in a positive way & also praise and cheer you for good work.
I love Prof. Burrill! They were incredibly clear on their assignments' criteria and listed exactly what was needed for an A. It was very hard to get less than an A on any given assignment. I struggled with quizzes personally, but they will be very easy if you prep. This class in particular helped me learn so much about female/GNC art. Super fun!
LOVE THIS PROFESSOR. Lots of work but easy if you just open and expand your mind to the curriculum. Would take a class with this Prof again in a heart beat. Takes the time to respond to everyone's discussions. Class is a few quizzes at first, then structure of discussion and replies on reading twice a week. Big research project at end of semester.
My favorite teacher I've had at my entire time at WV. I've never had such a well organized class before. The amount of reading and work definantly reflects the credits for the course but its all pretty interesting stuff. They reply to emails quickly and are willing and available to help you but not in a pushy way. I cannot recommend her enough.
I took this class asynchronously over the summer while visiting family abroad, and the workload was manageable. Super interesting material that the professor is clearly passionate about. Prof responded to all students and was quick to reply to emails. Class is geared towards English majors, be ready to read and write! Take this class with Leigh!
I had Leigh for American Lit 1 in the fall. I needed it as a pre-major req and just wanted to get through it. Despite studying a lot of difficult topics and essays, she always kept class engaging. I wish I had taken more classes with her. She's amazing!!!! Take any class she offers, especially if you're an English Major, you won't regret it at all!
Had her for a Ethnic Studies class in 2023. I once asked her for feedback on an essay before I turned it in and she told me it was really good. Then once she graded it, she gave me a C. I figured out she didn't actually read it the first time but glanced through it. She never pointed out those errors before. Got a B instead of an A because of that.
