I was so bored in this class that I actually counted the number of times he's said Um in a 10 minute interval. (About 150) You basically have to learn on your own in this class.

I um don't um think um...that's basically what you'll hear in the class. He's very knowledgeable but it's hard to get passed the uhms. He has very poor public speaking ability. Take him if your interested how many times a person can say um in a class.

All you gotta do is read the text book. The book is not hard to read and it is straight foward. Yeah he does studder A LOT but his test are things you read in the text book...use the study guide...it had colorful charts that are a summary of the chapter

hes a good guy, hes tough in class and its better not to ask questions, but if you talk to him out of class hes very cool and understanding. Its alot of studying for motivation and with his new book you should at least take physio psychology first

not clear to understand at all. if you must go to class, because you don't want to disappoint your parents, you can always sit in the back and go to sleep. you're teaching yourself the entire semester anyway!!

Considering he says UHhH UMHHA AHHH before any and all sentences, the tests are the easiest part of the course. Its your typical psychology class with the disadvantage of a very boring and terrible lecture due to the speech problems he has.

Ok, after the first 2 nights I was totally convinced that my class was the experimental group...and the control class didn't have to hear ummmm & and, emmmmm. I really think he was experimenting on which class fell asleep more.

Interesting material,its hard to understand what hes trying to get at some times.I forget the begining of his sentence by the time he gets to the end.His tests are from the book, but if you get a D or below he flat out tells you to drop the class.HARD!

While in class I watched people sleep, doodle in their notebooks and play snood. This is class is ridiculous. I studied for a good week for an exam, and I still failed. His tests are so hard and don't make sense. Hard to understand as a professor.

ok, so he's pretty boring because he says ummm like 50 billion times during class but if you bring in a disk he'll copy all his notes for you, and he NEVER takes attendace. so just read the book, and study the notes and you'll pass!

this class isnt that bad. you can skip whenever you want just read the book because its the same thing.... he seems like he tries hard. and its not that bad getting past the studdering after the first week or so u dont hear it anymore.

I agree with what everyone else has said. He's not the type of person who should be teaching a lecture-based class. Go to class, take the notes, and read the book. That will still just get you a C at best.

One of the worst teachers I have ever had. Dont take him. This is the only class that I have fallen asleep in. Its so borring and his test are not on what is covered in class. It is a complete waste of my time.

Porter is evil. Avoid him at all costs. He seems to enjoy making his female students cry...Not helpful, doesn't explain anything cleary and doesnt have exams. You have to read the whole textbook and memorize everything.

dropped his class b/c i couldn't understand a damn thing the guy said. too much stuttering, and that's terrible for a lecture class. class size is huge. either flies through notes or doesn't leave them up long enough to copy. NO NOT TAKE PORTER!!!

This is a very hard course and if it's your first semester and you find that you have him. Drop the class as soon as possible. It is a very hard class and he is really hard to understand. I asked him for help and he sugguested that i drop the class.

If you get anything less than an 'A' in PSY100 you should really reconsider if college is for you. He imposes a SUBSTANTIAL curve on tests AND overall grades, and all the test material is taken VERBADIM from the text. SO JUST READ!

He stutters and holds his jaw to keep from stuttering. He uses jargon and does not always explain himself. He is very dull and does not keep the interest of the students. He is a very tough professor who expects you to know all the details, but if you study really hard you can get a B maybe.

don't bother going to class, it doesn't help, but read the book! it is very important to read the book, the material really isn't that hard but his lectures can get a little confusing and he doesn't give you enough time to copy the power point.

He stuttered every 5 seconds and couldnt teach for his life. I failed his class, and so did 120 out of 160 of his students. No one got above a C in that class.

EXTREMELY impossible!!! I read each ch. 3x like he told me and still did poor on my exams. he tells you that you don't study right w/e that means b/c every other class I dont get lower then a B and the tests are on the smallest details. I wouldn't take him unless ur good at remembering every detail.

His lectures are very boring, and the tests are tricky and pretty hard... but his grading is curved a little bit so that helps. Doesn't really answer any questions that anyone in the class asked, doesn't know your name at all. He just teaches to a lecture hall, and doesn't seem to care who is in it.

He is HORRENDOUS!I'm in his class now and all I can do is think about what tiny miniscualdetail he is going to put on the test. I am not even learning because his tests a based on every little thing. He will tell you that you are studyign wrong, when in fact he is a horrible teacher, that is why everyone fails. He is a scientist not a teacher.

Not a horrible man, but a VERY hard class! If you are good at remembering details this class will be easier! MUST BUY BOOK & READ EVERTHING! Best test grades will come from reading the book in full detail. Not a class for someone who isn't willing to study ALOT!!!

Dr. Porter is not the easiest professor to take but his psychology courses are mainly scientific in nature and students are not required to have appropriate prerequisites. He will help you if you need help. He will practically tell you the answers to your questions. Both Motivation and Sensation and Perception are interesting.

I wouldn't take this class unless you are a psych major and perhaps a jr. His first two tests were hard-but the last two were much easier (still not easy enough to get an A!) He drops a test grade. I usually read the night before-or the day of test..and am getting a C. Not too bad, but making it. Just got to read.

The problem is not the professor - it is the students! Many of the students at our school shouldn't even be in college - they would make a better contribution to society digging ditches on the side of the road somewhere. I weep for these student's future employers who expect them to work.

I have him for two classes a day, i want to shoot myself. aside from his constant stuttering, this class is ridiculously hard.Nearly half the class failed the last exam and he told us that we werent studying enough. His exams are basically verbatim from the book but that doesnt mean its easy,the language is so hard to understand.AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

I had him for Motivation, but I am also taking him next semester for Psy 470 (Sens & Perception). If anyone had this class, can you please tell me if there is computer work involved and if it is difficult computer work? Are you graded on computer work? Or is it all exams? Please let me know!

i'm not a huge fan of porter. nice guy, but he's just way too smart and his explanations are pretty hard to understand. drifting off is pretty easy in his class. exams: on a scale from 1-10....about an 8. REALLY study....read the text! Labs: 1....they're take home and there is really no reason to not get full credit for them. Good luck.

I had him for both motivation and sens. percep. Its not easy I didnt study much and failed some exams like everyone else, because it IS NOT easy material. But if you actually study youll do good, I managed to get As on an exam here and there. Some how I pulled B-'s in both his classes....im still trying to figure that out

He's not as difficult or horrid as some ppl have made him out to be. I had him for Motivation and I am now in S&P. He drops the lowest grade out of 4 exams - which is quite a good deal. I like this man's passion for his specialty area. You do have to read the chapters thoroughly a few times.

He's nice and very smart, but he can't teach. The book is fascinating and tests are mostly from the book, so just stay home and read. 4 tests and he drops the lowest grade. Totally doable.

He said quote, "my job as a teacher is not to teach you, it's your job as students to teach yourselves." He also gives tests on chapters that he never talked about in class. Don't take him...

His lectures are extremely boring; I practically fall asleep every time I go. There are 4 60-question multiple choice tests, and he drops the lowest grade. He also does not count attendance towards your grade. Do yourself a favor: just stay home and read.

This course, with Dr. Porter is not for the slacker. If your looking for an easy A, and a walk through course...This is not the course for you. He is very serious about the material he presents, and does so in a manner that can be intimating if your not well versed in the concepts and material. He suggest reading the text before lecture. Great idea

This class is nearly impossible if you aren't dedicated to reading the book like it's your Bible. The book is a necessary and the chapters are unbearably in depth. Exams are essay and test you on actually fully retaining information way too much information at once. Try hardest to avoid this professor for this class.

Louis is a nice guy, but you can't understand him at all. Skip class and read the chapters a few times. Show up to class on test days and get an easy A. The test questions are based off of definitions in the text and highlighted experiments. Drops the lowest of 4 grades...easiest A I've ever earned! (THIS ONLY GOES FOR PSY254. OTHERS ARE HARD!)

Perhaps the best teaching prof I have ever had (and I've attended some name universities like Lehigh, Wisconsin, UConn). Shows up absolutely prepared, knows his material inside-out, very thorough explanations. Had him for psy 100 and 362, he is excellent in both. Exams can be tough, so do the reading.

had him for 254 and 362, i think he was going through a rough time last year. probably the most interesting professor at WCU. his mind is like an encyclopedia, and lectures are fascinating. 254 tested super easy; 362 not so much. he doesn't coddle students, and he shouldn't.

Everyone needs to lighten up on criticizing Dr. Porter with these reviews. You need to read your textbook to do well in the class. This should not be a surprise or an unnecessary effort on anyone's part. His lectures are very straight forward and interesting if you pay attention! He even tells what sections to look over for the essays? c'mon

Porter is not as bad as everyone says. It is important to read the book, I found outlining it the best tool. He only takes your best 3 of 4 tests which is really nice. As long as you study the book's definitions and understand it, the tests are not that difficult. He is a very smart guy and has a lot of knowledge

He is a very Smart and nice teacher, but what he doesnt know not everyone is on his level. Porter doesnt answer to his emails. You have to call him. And if you got an F on your first exam, make sure its all Cs, Bs, or As on the other exams or you will fail the course. If i had to take one of his courses again, it would be in the summer.

I have tried two times to tolerate Porter's class and I just can't. He knows his material but gets easily side tracked. He is by no means an orator, and that is quite a problem since all he chooses to do is lecture. I have no problem reading a textbook, but I do have a problem with having my ti,e wasted by useless lectures.

I agree that Dr. Porter would be a phenomenal teacher for the graduate level, but he was for the undergrad level as well. I have had him for 4 classes, and he has always been very well prepared, very interesting, and passionate about the material. If you go to his office hours, he is extremely helpful. I feel he answered student questions clearly.

I agree that Dr. Porter would a phenomenal teacher for graduate classes, but he was for undergrad as well.I have had him for 4 courses and have gotten much out of each one. He is always prepared, knows the material, and is passionate about the material. He does answer student's questions in a clear manner. He is extremely helpful in office hours.
