I hate biology, putting that out there. But taking Laci was such a joy that she had me actually enjoying lecture and the content. She is so devoted and interested in the content, and genuinely cares about the world. Funny and understanding. She records her lectures. Her lectures are super great, and study guides are VERY SIMILAR to the tests!

Laci was by far my favorite professor at Davis. She makes the material interesting, you can hear how passionate she is in her lectures. Always makes sure students are making sense of the material throughout lec. Do the study guides ahead of time and study them for the midterms/final and you should be good.

Pros: Everything! Wonderful lectures, super kind, caring, posts lecture slides before class, very available in OH/email, study guides for each test (2 MTs + final) that are super close to the actual test, down to Earth, hilarious, and hints at what to study. Cons: Discussion is mandatory which is boring, some concepts explained too fast. Take her!!

She's Great. Gives lots of good examples in lecture so show up and write down what she is saying. Also gives study guides that are spot on to the material covered on exams. Take her she's awesome, caring, and funny.

She is extremely passionate and I never feel bored in her class, her 2 midterms have all the figures and examples from lecture, so as long as you can repeat her examples from lecture and apply it to the concepts learned, you're good, my only complaint is lab practical was hard.

I took Laci for a summer Intro to Ecology course. Her lectures were interesting, informative, and she told a lot of anecdotes to help us remember difficult concepts. I love that her slides are mostly pictures, and her lectures explain what's important, she doesn't just read text off slides. Take any and every class you can get with her.

If I could take all of my classes with her, I would. I am so sad this quarter ends. Although we had so much to cover, Laci managed to make every single lecture very informative and super easy to follow. She made sure every concept is understood before she moved on to the next ones. I LOVE LACI!! She is by far the best professor I've had in my experience at UCDavis. Loving, Inspiring, hilarious and such a cool person. Very prepared on the subject and easy to follow in lecture. She is just a very down to earth person, accessible out of class and very understandable. She's also very clear on what her students will be tested on.

Absolutely amazing professor. Always asks, "Does that make sense?" after every single slide. Most of the time we do because she's so clear, but when we don't, she pauses everything to explain it even more throughly. Her examples are fascinating, and although this wasn't an "easy A", by sheer interest in the subject you'll find yourself doing well.

Laci is one of the best professors I've had at UC Davis. BIS2C was taught by her and two other professors. Laci taught the plant section, which I had infamously heard to be very difficult. Professor Gerhart-Barley is my favorite professor at Davis. I had her for Bis 2B, and I was excited to have her again for 2C. She really cares about her students and makes her lectures great. She is also greatly available outside of class!

Professor Gerhart-Barley is a solid choice. She loves teaching and tries her best to get more students involved in plant science. She would rush through lecture slides if she was running out of time though, which combined with the dizzying amount of material we had to retain, made her unit of the course much more difficult than it had to be.

My favorite professor at Davis! Had her for BIS2B and 2C. She truly loves what she teaches and her passion for plants in infectious. She makes it clear what you need to know, tests were long for 2B but if you know the material you can get through everything fast. Didn't take notes, just watched lecture videos 2x speed before exams to get an A.

Laci is my favorite professor at UC Davis! She truly cares about the students and converted a course that was meant to be exploring around Davis during a large portion of the class time to something along the same lines but wherever students were during quarantine. This quarter was rough, but her class and enthusiasm was honestly a highlight!

She took the time to meet up with groups over Zoom to help with presentations and individually checked in with people for their capstone. I had Gerhart-Barley and Furrow for BIS2B. The class was a breeze, it was async and if you listen to the lecture you can get an A in the class no problem. The lectures are a bit long and dull so pay attention and take notes maybe, but I didn't study at all... The lab was easy, you just have to remember it's there.

Laci is a very nice funny teacher. Taking her online was good and she explained her lectures very well. She curves drops on of the lowest homework. Also her concept reviews are easy if you watch her videos and do the study guides she gives out. Easy grade if you try.

Prof Gerhart-Barley is such a great prof. Her lectures are clear and the entire class is very organized. She always wore a costume in the discussion videos and made learning fun, connecting her own experience to the class. The tests are fair as long as you pay attention in lecture and do the homework and study guides. The class is not curved.

Laci is so wonderful. Like a cool nerd. She makes me smile even in online lectures. The tests were all as expected. Watch ALL the lectures (normal speed!) and then you'll do great on the homework and tests. Do the study guides! I recommend printing them out with spaces and then copying down the key by hand on the guide. Never used the textbook.

Laci is great! She makes it super easy to understand hard concepts. My one gripe about the class is that the grades in Canvas are incorrect to the true grading scale for most the quarter. When the grades were corrected, they dropped anywhere from 3-6%. This happened a week before finals. A lot of people thought they were fine and ended up failing.

Professor Gerhart-Barely is a great lecturer. She's very clear and concise, and also makes the class very engaging. For the discussion videos she dressed up in costumes which was hilarious, and it only made the class all the more fun (despite remote instruction due to the pandemic). Would definitely take her again.

Where do I start? At first, I was fearful of how classes would be online but Laci has truly gone above and beyond to make the class interesting and fun even while fully asynchronous. Her weekly discussions in costume bring a smile to my face and her lectures are fun, consise and engaging. I whole-heartedly would recommend taking one of her classes!

She was awesome! Super nice and her lectures are great. She also had great communication with her students during remote learning and her homework was always doable. The labs and prelabs are graded pretty harshly and the midterms were a little difficult but overall a great professor.

Professor was good and explained things well, I didn't do as well on the 2nd midterm and thought for sure I'm getting an A-. Study well on the final and you can still walk away with an A.

prof laci is so funny and sweet! only downside is shes a really tough grader and not very lenient (esp with COVID, lots of ppl were failing). Class is about 70% test-based with little to no EC, no rounding, and NO PARTIAL CREDIT. she was a great lecturer and gave a ton of resources to succeed; still a tough class to keep up with during a pandemic.

Professor Laci made my intro to biology as a college freshman very smooth. The class was very organized and was easy to stay on top of. Her lectures are engaging and easy to understand and aren't too long. Watch out for the 'choose all that are correct' questions on exams. She doesn't give partial credit for those kinds of questions. Prof Laci was always prepared. You have to actually understand the material in order to perform well on tests and homeworks. She offered extra credit points on tests and tons of office hours and also dropped a lowest hw and a lab. The average for the class was 80% without curving. Overall, great and sweet professor, always willing to help you.

There is weekly hw which is fairly easy if you look at lectures. The two concept reviews (basically midterms) as straightforward. The lab practical is very easy, and final is cumulative. It was an amazing experience being taught by Prof Gerhart. You can tell she is so passionate about teaching and the subjects she teaches. She is very light-hearted and doesn't take herself too seriously, cracking jokes and wearing funny costumes whenever possible. Her content is really easy to understand and I loved her class.

The pre-recorded lectures were awesome and pretty easy to keep up with, but this class is very conceptual when it comes to exams, so if you don't think about what you're watching it's really easy to mess up on exams. She's a good lecturer and the lectures themselves are well structured. Each asynchronous lecture is broken up into several parts and gives a lot of questions which help with understanding and keeps you engaged. Labs take a while to do but are easy.

The weekly to do list helps you keep track of what you need to do. Basically watch all the lectures, finish weekly quizzes, prelab, postlab, and discussion video.

Professor Gerhart really is a blessing to have as a biology professor. She makes difficult concepts super simple and is really sweet about answering what you may think are silly questions. The exams are very fair, so if you put in the work for her class, you should do well.

Amazing lectures! The content was interesting and not very hard, tests were fair. The study guides were very helpful in preparing for the HW and tests. Some of the labs can be a bit time consuming and tedious but not too bad.

Her lectures were pretty good, explained everything clearly. Class exams consisted of 2 midterms, lab practical, and final. Weekly homework/quiz with answers given at end of the week. There were also study guides. Lectures/quiz were low work, labs took longer to do. She also answers questions on an online website if you need help.

Okay, Listen up! As long as you attend lectures, pay close attention to the material and understand overall concepts you will be fine! Midterms are mostly like the study guides but beware of the 'select all apply' questions because there are ALOT of them. Final was just like midterm 1 and 2. Overall she is a great lecturer.

She was amazing and so kind! My only drawback with this class is that she talks and moves through topics so quickly, and none of the presentation slides that she posts on canvas have next-to-nothing on them. So, it was really hard (for me at least) to get a better understanding of the topics.

My favorite professor this quarter. Explains things really thoroughly, and if one person doesn't understand it she's willing to explain it again. Really caring, friendly. laci moves fast, but her lectures are amazingly comprehensive. she is so kind and caring and passionate about her class; she made learning genuinely fun. her midterms and finals are very fair (not hard if you attend all the lectures/do the study guides). lecture hw is a breeze. i wish i could have her for 2b; i miss her so much.

Extremely passionate about biology. Organized. Engaging. Provides study guides for all course material. You must put in the work to succeed (go to lectures, do the study guides, study ahead of time). Labs are easy, and so is the lab practical (as long as you pay attention during labs and study a decent amount).

If you're going to take BIS002B, I highly recommend taking it with Professor Gerhart-Barley. She makes lectures interesting and has a great sense of humor, she provides a lot of helpful resources for studying, and she's generally very approachable. One of my favorite professors for sure.

Professor Laci is great for BIS2B. She lectures fairly fast, and there are a lot of lectures, but midterms/final will only cover content from the lectures (textbook reading optional). Recorded lectures are non-mandatory but labs are attendance required. If you can keep up with the content you'll do good in this class.

professor gerhart-barley is such a gem! she makes lectures very enjoyable with lots of jokes and frequent polls to see how students are understanding the material. it is biology, so the material is a bit hefty, but if you attend lectures and complete the assignments, you're on track for a good grade. definitely recommend :)

Loved this class, but beware because it can be difficult at the end of the year. The only downside to this class is that it is not curved ever, regardless of how the students do on the exams. So, make sure that you do good on at least one of the midterms.

She's an amazing professor. For BIS 2B, our exams were based entirely off of her lectures so there was no need to read the textbook. If you review the lecture slides and use the study guides and pay attention/take good notes during lecture, you should get an A.

She's the best and she also has really cool outfits. She made ecology actually interesting and you could tell she's really passionate. The pre labs and post labs were a bit tiring but it's pretty easy to get an A as long as you study her study guides.

Laci is an awesome professor. EVE120 with her was super easy, very lecture-heavy, but also lots of room for good discussion. The class can be a bit depressing, but I liked how we ended on a positive note. She's a really sweet professor, clearly good at her job, and it's a perfect elective to take if you're burnt out.

Took class Fall 2021. I was really good at bio in HS (no AP/IB), if I pulled my leg a bit more in this class, I would've gotten a B for sure. More effort must be put in science classes in college. Review and understand lectures before hw + tests. Don't be like me, seek help when confused! Labs are easy. Take her! She is amazing.

BEST PROF EVER!!!! She really cares a lot about her students, and passionate about her subject. It is actually hard to get an A and above for this class since there is no curve or extra credits stuff to make things easier, so study hard, and please do come to her office hours, it's super helpful.

As a student majoring in Ecology, having a professor with similar specialization is exciting. Professor Gerhart is funny, well spoken, and easy to talk to. Her lectures are the highlight out of my classes, and she utilizes easy class participation. I hope to learn more with her!

Laci is AWESOME. You can tell that she cares about what she teaches as well as her students. Although she teaches over 1000 students, she is accessible to reach if you need help. Her lectures are very engaging. I found the midterms to be difficult, but she provides study material and outlines what you need to know. You will not regret taking her.

I would say that not attending lectures don't necessarily hurt but it'll take time out of your day to watch the recordings to take notes. Dr. Gerhart is the BEST! Lectures & discussions are engaging. Material is dense but Dr. Gerhart made it easy to digest and even encouraged Qs. MTs are identical to study guides. No curve but exams are fair and offers extra credit. Grade is based on 2 MTs, final, HW, and lab. Very accessible in OH. Truly wants students to succeed. Highly recommend!

This class was honestly pretty easy and was a great introduction to college as a freshmen. She posted all lectures and discussions online. As long as you keep relatively up to date with watching/attending lectures you'll do good on exams. Labs were mandatory but really easy. Only time-consuming things were weekly pre-labs.

Gerhart is an extremely sweet professor whose lectures are thoughtful and entertaining as she obviously loves her job. The exams are not very difficult if you study fairly well from the lectures but they weigh a lot. I felt like I was able to learn while not being pressured about the grades and the labs themselves stemmed from fun to standard.

One of the best professors I have had so far at Davis! Lectures are interesting and she explains them very well. Always willing to help and go through the material again if someone is not understanding. Midterms can be difficult but as long as you study you will do well.

I absolutely loved this course! The tests require a lot of memorization of terms and concepts, but Laci provides so many study materials like study guides with answer keys and videos to go over homework. Her lectures are so entertaining and she has a fun personality that keeps you engaged! If you put in the effort, you'll definitely ace the class.

Her lectures were amazing! Her lectures are recorded, and she teaches the content with lots of passion. Grading is clear; test questions were a great reflection of the content. The only thing I didn't like was how her presentations only had pictures, so missing a lecture ends up using the time to watch the hour recording and take notes.

I went into this class terrified. I have no previous college-level science experience and always hated high school science classes, but I I had to take this as a CS major. Gerhart made this class a breeze. Her lectures are fantastic and help you understand concepts with ease. In addition, her tests align with the lectures and study guides.

She is super funny and has a great personality! I really enjoyed her lectures. Her lectures were engaging and she would make lots of jokes. I was scared going in because I never took AP bio, but it wasn't bad. To do well in class, take good notes from lectures and discussions, use the study guides, and go to office hours.

amazing professor- teaches extremely well and is passionate about the subject. lecture homeworks and test questions from her can be tricky, just read thoroughly and take your time. tests are frustrating sometimes because FRQs require very specific examples and answers that aren't implied in the question, so you really need to know your stuff.

Your grade pretty much was based on your exams, but they were all based on her lectures. Go to class and you'll pass. She is such a kind person and dressed up for some of the lectures, engaging her students and actually wanting to teach the content rather than reading off a screen. By far my favorite of the BIS series. Take her!!

Take Laci! She is laid-back, approachable, truly passionate about bio, making her lectures very engaging. Homework was reasonable, consisting of 7-10 question lecture homework and pre/post-labs. Tests aren't too bad, although they are highly specific. Lots of overlap with APES and AP Bio, so her class is relatively easy if you took those.

Since this is a stem course it was really hard and I didn't end up with the best grade but this course wasn't super overwhelming and Laci is amazing. She is very understanding and her jokes are the best. She has lecture videos so you don't even need to attend the lectures.

This was the first college-style lecture I ever had and I am glad it was Prof. Gerhart. She cares so much for her students, gives easy-to-understand lectures, all lectures are recorded and the homework is so simple. Easy class.

I loved that attendance wasn't mandatory and her lectures were really interesting and digestible. She records lectures and you are tested on 4 lectures every week so it forces you to be on track. The tests were really easy and similar to the study guides and labs were pretty simple too. Love Gerhart :D!

Laci is a great professor! Her lectures are very engaging although sometimes it's not entirely clear what the general idea is. She uses a lot of specific examples to explain a topic as a whole. The course was not that difficult, I just found it extremely time consuming to review and learn the topics well outside of class.

Really engaging lectures with very funny personality. Exams are super easy with only a few trick questions and are super fair. Re-explain concepts when she sees there are students that seems confused and will give time for students to ask questions during lecture.

Took her in fall quarter, genuinely one of the nicest professors out there. Always tries to make sure you understand the concepts before moving on. Class including lab wasn't bad, I lucked out with a wonderful TA too. Exams do take up a lot of the grade but I would say her weekly study guides (with answer keys!) are on par with what's on her exams.

Incredible, absolutely a joy being in her lectures. Even in a room of several hundred other students she made each of us feel unique and seen. Her team was great to work with, the class was manageable with effort and thought. She made me consider switching majors.

Laci is the best professor for BIS 2B. Content was very straightforward and not difficult to understand. Labs are not bad just make sure you attend them. More of a memorization class than anything, only reason I ended with a B+ and not an A is because I didn't do as well as I thought I did on the final.

Amazing professor! She's super funny and really cares about what she's teaching. If you took APES in high school, this will be a breeze but if not, it's still pretty easy compared to other biology classes. Honestly, if you show up to lectures, discussions, and labs, you will get a B at least.

Very charismatic and clear lectures, more-so than Professor Bay. Easy material with AP Biology background, but grades are unweighted, so review before midterms, especially the final.

The grade depends more on labs and weekly homeworks than midterms and finals. The professor makes the content concise and easy to remember. Attending the lectures are a must in order to understand the content. The lectures are engaging and easy to understand. She genuinely loves teaching this subject which is reflected through her enthusiasm.

Taught by Gerhart/Bay. BIS 2B is NOT an easy class; I walked in thinking it would be. Graded by HMWK, Labs, and Tests. Tests (2 Midterms and Final) are hard AF, even if you study your ass off. Expect a B.

She's a great professor, she's very passionate and teaches very well overall. the grading scale isn't too bad but don't be fooled by the stellar reviews, the class is not as easy as it seems. Most of the times it felt as if my studying didn't pay off. Also there is NO CURVE which really sucks.

Prof is super knowledgeable and great at explaining concepts in bio. She answers all questions clearly and likes to make jokes. Her lectures are so interesting that I forgot about my registration pass time until after class was over. She uses lots of pics on slideshows, wants answers that are too specific on exams imo, lab attendance is mandatory.

Great lectures and teaching style, surprisingly easy for a 5 unit class. The final is weighted a bit heavy but the material is all covered in lecture and isn't textbook dependent.

Gerhart's lectures are relatively interesting and she explains things clearly. She will basically answer everyone's questions because she genuinely wants her students to do well and understand the material. The class content may seem simple upon learning, but I would suggest studying more than you think you should, and do the study guides!

She is amazing at lecturing. What she taught is what is on her exam. As 5 units class, the workload is not that intense. Do the lab and discussion. Go to her lecture and jot notes. Make sure LEARN the concepts instead of memorising only. Exam is little bit challenging but definitely approachable if you know the concepts throughly.

Don't underestimate Bis2B! You need to study if you want to do well because there is no curve AT ALL. Second midterm had a D average and a lot of students were upset by this. Besides that, I loved Laci in lecture, she's very interesting but she goes fast so take notes prior to class. Lab practical is like the practice. Discussion hw can be tedious.

Everyone saying that her lectures and practices don't help prep for the exams are wrong. Her exams are insanely generous (easier than the practice given on canvas so DO THEM) and she is so passionate about the subject during lecture and the concepts are easily digestible.

Engaging lectures. Concepts are straightforward and simple but you have to study a decent amount to get a good grade, in my opinion. Amazing lecturer! She is so kind and caring, I would recommend attending her office hours she is very helpful. It gets kind of confusing near the middle of the quarter, but she answers questions constantly and explains concepts very well and lectures were enjoyable.

Loved her! She is an incredible and inspiring professor. She is a great lecturer and wants her students to succeed. She even recorded additional videos to help us with tougher topics. Points were based off of two midterms, homework (lowest dropped), labs (lowest dropped), a lab practical and a final. Attendance is not required. Highly recommend!

Gerhart is a great lecturer. I took BIS2B with both Gerhart and Stacowicz as co-instructors; Gerhart led half of the lectures This course has 2 midterms + final, Labs + final report, and discussions, lowest lab and discussion dropped. There is no curve. Beware of due dates that I missed (for practice midterm 1 and final lab report)!

Gerhart is very sweet and understanding. She clearly cares about her students and wants them to do well. Her lectures are well-organized and easy to take notes on.

Took Dr. Gerhart and co taught with Dr. Bay. 2B is EXTREMELY easy but somehow she makes it even easier, explains things really clearly. They're also topics I don't find the most interesting from bio but she makes things engaging during lecture. Very nice too.

Best prof I've ever had at Davis. Graded on 2 midterms 16% each, mandatory discussion 13% Final 25%, Lab 30%. Shes very kind and accommodating and always made lecture entertaining+records lecture. She gives lots of study guides+keys similar to actual exams so take advantage and go to OH if ur stuck. For Lab Exam study the practice lab Qs heavily

Really good lectures

Very nice professor who you can tell cares about her students' success. She made lectures easy to follow and had fair tests based on practice problems that would be put out weekly/bi-weekly.

Dr. Gerhart is a great professor -- clearly likes the subject, knowledgeable, clear explanations, and funny! She co-taught with Dr. Stachowicz, and they made a good team. The discussions and labs were pretty easy, nice to have real-life examples of the material. No curve, so make sure to study the practice exams, study guides, and go to OH!

Awesome professor, made me like biology when before i absolutely hated biology. Exams are very similar to practice exams, so many optional study guides given and she is very helpful during office hours.

Dr. Gerhart is an incredibly engaging professor. Her lectures are story-like and compelling and she sincerely cares about her students' comprehension of the material. She does her best to answer all questions and creates an environment where no question is too rudimentary or small to be answered.

Laci was one of the best lecturers I have had in my time at Davis (2nd year NPB major), she was empathetic, personable, answered questions any students had, and overall very approachable. Her class (Bio 001) was easy to follow, very test heavy, but she posts the slides + lectures, gives extensive study guides (PLS DO THEM ALL) which helped a LOT.

Dr. Gerhart was amazing!!! Super engaging and funny lectures & she made sure to answer everyone's questions thoroughly. The exams were really fair and the study guides were super helpful. She was co-teaching with Dr. Bogar and they both did a great job. Take bio with her if you can !!!

Gerhart had consistently great lectures that were inspiring, brought in fascinating current knowledge and studies to reinforce concepts, she's extremely clear and concise. She has great control of the classroom and is overall a fantastic professor, I greatly enjoyed learning biology from her. Plenty of quality study materials. Does that make sense?

Absolutely amazing

She's so funny LOL and you can tell she really loves biology. I love how she always asks the class if what she's saying makes sense since you can tell she cares about course clarity and understanding. Loved taking bio001 with her and Dr. Bogar as well!!

Dr Gerhart is an amazing lecturer, super clear, and consistently pauses to make sure everyone's clear. Attendance not mandatory but the slides that went with each lectures contain mostly pictures so you need to rewatch recorded lectures to understand what's going on. exam is very fair if u study. also answers q's on piazza very quickly

Amazing lecturer who makes every ounce of content so easy to digest. The amount of additional help provided by both her and Dr. Bogar (two professor class) was amazing, and the study guides they took the time to produce were incredibly helpful preparing for each exam.

A great lecturer, passionate about what she teaches, approachable. Her tests aren't too bad. Her lectures are entertaining and she presents information clearly/will be straightforward on what she expects you to know. Provides loads of practice problems and study guides.

The tests were very easy. I got an A by doing study guides and rewatching lecture videos. On the final, there was extra credit opportunities. There is NO curve in the class and the grade solely depends on discussions, midterms, and finals.

-lectures were paced great and covered interesting content -short practice quizzes before midterm, but not representative of all content that will be on midterm -no curve but not really needed -helpful during office hours, but very full on weeks before/during exams

she's very passionate about biology and accessible during office hours. sometimes the questions on practice tests and study guides would be confusing and it would be hard to get an explanation but it was her and Dr. Bogar who would write the questions so its not her fault. Super good lecturer.

Her lectures make learning bio fun and easy. She is the best professor I have had in Davis hands down.
