Attendance isn't mandatory but recommended, bases her notes from the textbook and powerpoint slides. She is very random at times and hard to follow but she cares about the material and willing to go over topics that are confusing. Very approachable.
She is a good professor and a very pleasant woman. She is always willing to help the students and gives great hints during the exams. However, her lectures are sometimes disorganized and unclear which makes it difficult to follow. Take good notes and you will be fine. READ THE BOOK!! 2 midterms, cumulative final, 4 homework assignments.
Prof Masoudie is a little bit intimidating at first, her lectures aren't super organized at times and she tends to move really fast. However she is kind hearted and will try to help you out . She does give random pop quizzes from time to time to check attendance in class and to see if you understand. Overall shes ok, you can do a lot worse though..
God screw this professor. You have to attend lecture to understand her models. The book that was assigned does not have examples for all the models that she teaches. Why would you pick a book that doesn't teach what you are teaching?!? A lot of students don't attend all lectures so they have trouble.
Masoudie is super hot. I thought this class was hard though. She is really nice, probably one of the better professors in SC's ECON department...but that's not saying much.
In all, a pretty terrible professor. It is sad to say because she is so nice, but I really felt like I was wasting my time in class. Really disorganized and confusing, refuses to post the complete notes to the website, so even though i went to class it may it hard to study. really no point to taking this class, you could learn yourself quicker
Masoudie has absolutely no idea what she is talking about. After a month I started to count how many times she responded with "I don't know" or "maybe i will have the answer at my office hours" and was truly disgusted for having to pay money to attend class. She is extremely unorganized and i can confidently say that I did not learn a single thing
She is really kind, helpful & clear in conveying about 90% of the class material! Industrial org is based on game theory concepts, but if you haven't had game theory B4 don't worry, she does a good and thorough brush-up on game theory! WANT A GOOD GRADE? take notes and do problem sets! exams are the exact same as class examples and problem sets
Masoudie is nice and approachable. Tests can be difficult but come straight from practice problem sets and class examples, so if you do the work not a hard A. Moves very quickly, slides make little sense wo lecture
This class is very easy if you do the problem sets and go to class. The tests are exactly like the homework problems. She's not the best lecturer but she is really nice and goes over confusing concepts until everyone understands it. She's also willing to boost your grade a bit if you're on the border and she sees you come to class.
Prof Masoudie is great! Even though she can be unclear sometimes, she is always willing to help you during office hour. I don't blame her for the lack of clarity, since Macro economic is full of "what if this happened" and there is never a definite answer to a certain problem.
Unorganized class, no idea what's being covered at any given moment. Syllabus is vague. Textbook is never used. No materials are posted online. You'll fall behind even if you miss 1 session.
I personally thought game theory was an extremely difficult subject to learn. Lots of thinking and math applications. Masoudie's lectures can be all over the place sometimes but in the end she's a sweet professor who even gives you hints on exams. Exams aren't too hard either
One of the best professors I had. Course is easy: you can pass without classes and you can get an A just by going to all classes and do the homeworks.
Medium hardness class. If you go to the lectures you will be fine. Book is very useful.
This girl is so confused!!! She also confuses you as well and since she doesn't follow the book you have no resource to study! Avoid her!
Difficult class. She is often very unclear and skips steps when doing a problem in lecture. Then gets confused why her own math is wrong. If she just wrote out all the steps, it would help everyone. Other than that one problem, she is ok. Very nice in lecture. Overall: average professor
Absolutely the worst professor in the entire USC econ department. She skips materials then put the same material in the exam. If you want to mess up your GPA and wanna experience such boring and confusing lectures, go ahead and suffer and take her class.
prepare to get lost in overly complicated math nice person but sooooo bad at explaining, make things way more complicated than it should be. on top of the, she takes slides out from the version she posts online, which is totally unnecessary and makes it even more impossible to study
there were many instances this semester where professor masoudie failed to provide adequate answers to students questions to the point where other students had to clarify her cryptic descriptions, and on one instance after answering a students question incorrectly, justified her mistake by saying "i wasn't really paying attention."
She is the best Professor I have had so far in USC. She is very caring and knowledgeable. The exams are hard and nothing out of that she teaches. I highly recommend her.
Please avoid, so awful and nonsense. She is the worst.
I LOVE HER! If you put in effort and take the time to study, you can easily get an A on her exams. She gives a pretty solid overview of what she's going to include. She does skip some material and go back and forth sometimes, but if you pay attention you'll be fine. Very interesting class, I recommend it if you like math!
Don't waste your time taking her class. She is nice but that is it.
NONSENSE, DISORGANIZED, UNCLEAR EXPLANATION. WASTE OF TIME
Great person, but horrible professor. Very unclear. She goes over math concepts and theories that are useless which will never be used in the real world. Jumps around topics. Would not recommend unless you LOVE math
Really great professor! I tend to be a slow learner, but she really takes her time to explain things. She teaches in a way that makes the concept very clear. She may spend too much time on one topic, but I think this makes for better understanding for faster and slower learners. Easy tests. Easier than the hw and exactly what she teaches in class
I took ECON457 with Prof. Masoudie in Fall 2017. I could not be more satisfied from the class. I learned a lot for her lectures. Be ready for a challenging class but a wonderful experience.
this class is the hardest class i have ever taken. Her assignments are extremely difficult and the exams are impossible. She is a horrible lecturer and very hard to understand.
Prof. Masoudie is a wonderful instructor. The class material is difficult but she has managed to teach profound material in an easy-to-understand way. People who do not work hard always nag but this is one of the best class I have ever taken.
GREAT professor. Caring and extremely patient. If you show up to lectures, participate, and do the homeworks, easy A.
Everything you need to know for the class is taught in lecture. No need to use the textbook. She gives a lot of examples which are helpful. There are weekly homework sets, two midterms and a final. The exams are basically just like the homeworks.
The best professor I have had during my time at USC.
Shes only nice to you if you fit the criteria of her perfect student which entails not having to work, having plenty of time to dedicate to the course and being passionate about mathematics. She was not very courteous with me about anything and she makes very simple subject matter extremely complicated. Probably the worst professor Ive ever had.
Professor Masoudie is nice but that's honestly about it. Her lectures can be very dry and somewhat confusing because she's not very clear about her expectations. I personally didn't enjoy her class, but the only good thing is that her exams are the same as the homework. If you can do the homework, you can ace the exams! I would not take her again.
Tests are just like the homework so you know what to expect. Lectures have a lot of information but not to much outside of the class work. Good teacher.
I'm usually a math guy and the material came easy to me, but a handful of mistakes cost me a great grade in the class. She taught well, tests are based on the homework and lecture. Not a difficult class, but you probably need to study hard to do really well
Class was very lecture heavy rather than textbook/reading heavy. Prof Masoudie is extremely caring and will work with students so that they are able to get their best grade possible. Test were very straight forward if you review the slides and look for clarifications in the textbook. Very adorable professor with a great sense of humor.
easily the worst class I have had at USC beware.
Not a difficult class if you even remotely read the textbook. Most of the time I read the chapter before class, and the lecture is taken right from the book so class time was just review. Prof is straightforward and she intentionally makes tests so that the class averages at least a B.
Masoudie is a solid econ prof. She grades you based on 3 tests each worth 30%, and 10% participation. This would be scary, except the tests are some of the easiest I've ever taken. The averages for the class were always above 90% and the medians were usually 95%. Her lectures are clear and she appreciates questions. Super easy tests and an easy A.
Her lectures may not be the most entertaining but she explains things well and you don't really need the textbook if you pay attention. Midterms and final make up 90% of your grade but they are weirdly easy, class average is always in the 90s and partial credit for questions is extremely lenient, just know the HW. She's very approachable too.
No need to go to class. The textbook is exceptional and you get nothing out of the powerpoints that isn't in the textbook. She does occasionally have quizzes that she announces in class. Tests are basic and straightforward
Great professor! Tests and quizzes are exactly what is covered in class. Definitely recommend!
Took Masoudie for 203 & 303. Her understanding and explanation of microeconomics and financial markets was great. Pop quizzes will happen, but she notifies you beforehand. Grade mainly determined by exams, the material of which is outlined clearly.
Good professor. Lectures are concise and cover all that's necessary, and she responds well to questions. That being said you need to put in your own effort as well (reading the textbook, attending class, taking notes, etc.). Honestly half the people who complain about this class have probably never cracked open the textbook.
The worst professor I ever meet at USC. The content is not that hard, but she cannot organize the lectures with clear logic. I got totally confused in her classes, and have to spend a ton of time to go over the material by myself. The TA is also sucked. Very unwilling to offer any helps. This class is the worst one I had in USC f over 4 years.
Dr. Masoudie is one of the best professors in the department. The material in this class is really applicable to a career in finance, and she is good at teaching it in a understandable way if you pay attention. If you don't go to class and listen you won't get it. Pretty sure the person below me is just upset they did poorly, this was a great class
She's a really nice teacher, and I think her lectures are pretty clean and concise. I learned a lot from the class, and if you just literally take good notes and listen to her lectures, the exams are really straightforward. This is definitely not a hard class relative to the 400 levels, so take this class if you can take notes.
Professor Masoudie explains economic concepts clearly and effectively. She has a very engaging lecture style that will keep you focused and stop you from falling asleep. She grades on 3 tests and participation, and the tests look just like the homework. She is also super available outside of class and will happily meet with you for extra help.
Masoudie is one of my favorite professors I've ever had. I also took her for ECON203 and her class was why I decided to switch to an Econ/Math major. She is really smart and her lectures are well-organized. If you don't understand something, just ask questions, and she will explain it in a different way. don't listen to the negative reviews !!!
It's not that she's terrible. It's just that the course itself is kind of hard. She is helpful if you take the reins and ask every question you have. She can make you feel dumb, but as long as you get everything clear you should be fine. Tests are straightforward, but you have to develop an intuition for a bunch of concepts and graphs. Mama mia :O.
Ladan's lectures can get dull. She tells us exactly what'll be on the quiz and just review what she said, then the quiz will be on totally different things because she forgets her words. 90% of your grade depends on 3 exams, and the exams require you to not only know the material but also have an econ intuition to apply it on your own. Kinda hard!
90% of the grade is 3 exams, but imo they are fairly easy and had median grades of like 90 which is really high. Attendance not mandatory but she only announces quizzes in lectures so you kind of have to go. Lectures can be bland but she explains things well and gives detailed answers to any questions.
Fairly easy class. Listen to lectures and the tests are super easy. Good and nice professor
I'm not sure why her rating is so low, but she's one of the best profs I've had at USC. She is clear on her expectations and goes over material in depth throughout lectures. Make sure to attend class if you want an enriching experience.
She is a good explainer that makes her criteria known very clearly. She does pop quizzes during class that are easy if you've been paying attention to lecture. They seem annoying, but honestly help a ton for the midterm. Not a lot of study material to prep for exams, but the key is actually going to lecture and you'll do really good. Super fair.
She's not a bad choice for ECON 303, its just that the class itself is very difficult. She is clear in her lectures however her homeworks and tests can be kind of confusing, so just make sure to clarify exactly what she is looking for. Pop quizzes are announced during lectures, usually 1-3 points each.
Professor Masoudie is a great lecturer. She always explains things pretty clear and gives many examples in class. She is also very helpful and nice during her office hour. Grades are based on three tests, quizzes, and assignments. Tests are similar to homework, but there are some trickier questions. Good choice for 305!
No textbook, you refer to your notes. Very straight forward but her pop quizzes and homework can be a bit annoying. Final is cumulative and two other midterms that cover sections of the class.
Took ECON 305 and ECON 457 with Professor Masoudie. Her grading is fair, and assignments and quizzes are also manageable. She always clarifies what she wants, being very accessible through zoom office hours and email. Highly recommends for ECON classes. :)
Professor Masoudie was a great macroeconomics professor. She explained all of the concepts thoroughly, and as long as you do enough problems and go over the problem sets you will succeed. She was really nice and made a concerted effort to teach the material.
Professor Masoudie is a great choice for Econ305. The tests are fair and she explains the concepts well. She was accommodating given the pandemic and she truly just wants her students to do well in the class. TAKE HER!
I was never the textbook reading type, but for 305, the textbook was MORE helpful than lectures. The textbook did a really good job summarizing materials, on the other hand, Prof Masoudie's lecture can be confusing (maybe cuz it was online). Her tests and homework can be harder than the examples she demonstrated in class.
Midterm/Final are 80% of the grade. Random pop-quizzes make up an additional 10%. USC's ECON department is subpar in general but Masoudie is about the best you could do. She has a bad habit of wasting time on anecdotes and then speeding through material quickly. That said she's very approachable and always answers questions.
great choice for 305. one of the best at usc.
Not bad at all for 305. The class is generally easier than 303 and that is reflected by the level of difficulty of homeworks/exams too. She has "pop quizzes" throughout the lectures which are usually easy if you are listening. Reading the textbook is extremely helpful in this class!!
303 is difficult, but she makes it manageable. Lectures are super clear. She is always willing to answer questions and help students in OH. Graded by weekly HW, three tests, and pop quizzes. All tests have an average of around 90. The second midterm had a median of 98. This class should be easy if you go to the lectures and do your assignments.
A good choice for Econ305.
Ladan is my favorite econ professor at USC - she explains concepts really well in class and is approachable during office hours too. You really have to listen in class, and if you keep up with the weekly assignments, you can sail through the midterms. You definitely need to put in the work, but if you do and you like econ, this'll be a great class.
457 requires a LOT of memorization from definitions to formulas. Final is cumulative, but if you put in the effort it's not hard to walk away with an A. Great Professor, I've taken all three of her classes with her. No curve balls, fair tests.
Amazing Professor. Succinctly explains concepts and really goes out of her way to answer questions with thorough explanations. She is super helpful, smart, and inspirational. I honestly really look up to her and will take more classes with her.
Professor Ladan is an AMAZING professor who is really caring and kind. Her lecture is clear and easy to follow, and even if there are few pop quizzes, they are very easy and are based on the course materials that are just taught. She is really accessible outside of class. Tests are very similar to HW and quizzes in the class. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER.
Professor Ladan is one of my favorite professor at USC. Her lecture is very clear, and quizzes is extremely easy, covering contents that she just taught. Midterms and final are straightforward. She is extremely accessible outside of class and is happy to answer your question. SHE'S THE BEST. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER.
Masoudie is a solid choice for any of the intermediate courses. She's doesn't really have a sense of humor but she's good person nonetheless. The lecture material can be kind of boring at times (especially for 305), but if you do the homework, attend class, and study hard, you'll do very well.
Ladan records her lectures, which is great if you want to go back to review things she talked about. 305 has a lot of graphs and models that quite frankly you'll never use in your life. She goes over a lot of topics and final is, like her other classes, cumulative. Hw questions are very similar to her exams. This is purely a memorization class.
Prof Masoudie's 305 is very straightforward and fair, so I have no complaints. Tests are weighted heavily, everything else like homework and pop quizzes carries little weight. Lectures are comprehensive and she does a good job explaining topics. Her accent is kind of thick and sometimes it can be hard to understand her, but otherwise great class!
Prof Masoudie's 303 is very straightforward and fair, so I have no complaints. Tests are weighted heavily, everything else like homework and pop quizzes carries little weight. Lectures are comprehensive and she does a good job explaining topics. Her accent is kind of thick, and there is a lot of math in this class. Otherwise, great class!
I took 303 and 305 both from professor Ladan, she has clear lecture note and is always willing to explain more if you have questions. Textbook is not needed if you have a good command of what was taught in class or what appeared in homework. Test questions are similar to homework, and will not have new things outside the class material.
Former student here just starting in banking... the materials come in handy when you're prepping for the SIE/Series 7 license exams. Saves you a lot of time going through the materials. Overall a pretty informative class if you're interested in finance and financial products. Enjoyed the class!
Her financial markets course is the worst of both worlds: hard and uninteresting. Very little time spent discussing or applying -- most of the course is granular memorization of processes that you could complete on a spreadsheet in 1/100 the time. Nice person but 95% useless course. There is also no curve at all -- beware!
Professor Masoudie is a good choice for 305. The midterms and finals draw heavily from the homework assignments. She is a lenient grader and will restructure the weight of your tests if you do poorly on one. Overall, a pretty interesting lecturer and caring teacher. I would take another class from her.
This was the hardest class I took as an Econ major at USC. Professor Masoudie is a good person, very approachable, but that doesn't overcome the difficulty of the exams. I'd say she was decent at teaching material, but too much time in lecture is her showing us proofs of stuff we didn't need. I learned way better on my own using the lecture slides.
Prof Masoudie is extremely clear about her expectations; tests line up exactly with lectures/homework/pop quizzes, which consist of textbook material plus a little extra. She's open to being asked questions in class, and the TA is as well; if you're willing to go to class, she's easily the best choice for 305.
Prof.Ladan is super kind and caring who is willing to answer students' questions. Her lecture is pretty dry. There are several pop quizzes but are really easy and is based on content that she just told. Exams are almost like a memorization test that if you memorize her PPT, lecture notes, and HW questions, you will be good. Great prof.
She is such a lovely teacher--I've taken her for 3 different econ classes and considered taking her for a fourth. Her class is not an easy 'A' but it is definitely achievable if you put in the work. Material includes random 1-3 question pop quizzes, problem sets and tests. Pay attention during class; you get used to her style after the first exam.
This class was miserable, unless your really into math and abstract puzzles without much practical purpose I really hated this and it took up a lot of time that would have been better spent elsewhere.
Masoudie is a pretty good option for 305 - the content is hard but make sure you understand the homework and you should be fine. She also restructured my exams so that midterm 2, which I did the worst on, was less weighted which helped my grade a lot. Highly recommend!
Professor Masoudie is great. Out of all of the econ classes I've taken, she was the one professor I actually learned from. There are a lot of quizzes, but she reviews the material before and were super helpful when preparing for exams. Final is cumulative which is a LOT of material, but she is great at explaining and using real world problems.
Tough but rewarding! Weekly quizzes (easy), bi-weekly problem sets. 3 exams - 30% each, and she tells you what will be on it the lecture before- just memorize the slides. She's super passionate about what she's teaching, so def go to office hours- she loves getting to know her students. Highly recommend, given the limited options in the Econ dept!
Sets very clear expectations. Lecturing is very clear and the pace is good. Very friendly and understanding.
i do not recommend this professor. The homework and examples she provides in class do not line up with what's on the exams which is especially unhelpful since the exams are 90% of your total grade while homework and pop quizzes are only 5%. Her teaching style also made it very hard for me to follow along with her lectures and in class examples.
She's a nice prof + teaches well but her exams are kinda vague and different from the hw, especially for theory-related short answers, making expectations unclear. The assignments are weighted too little imo. A fairer distribution would be 20% per test and 20% for hw + quizzes. Not an easy class but you'll learn a lot as she's passionate & engaging
Never knew one can only learn about economic growth model in macroeconomic class. She goes deep with mathematical understanding of models, but not quite so explains how model works or how can it be related to the real world. And it is hard to use what she has taught us in group projects, so I really do not know what is the point of doing one.
If you want the feeling of a most proper way of university education.
Prof Masoudie is straightforward and fair. Tests are the main focus, but homework and quizzes also help. Lectures are clear, and unstuckstudy is a great study tool alongside the class materials.
Dr. Masoudie is the best. Her ECON305 course is so far the best course I have taken at USC.
Masoudie is very intelligent and delivers strong lectures. Sometimes the content can be repetitive from previous lectures but serves as a good review. The content can be challenging, but attendance helps. Two midterms and one final make up 90% of the grade. Textbook reading aids your understanding. Fair grader.
solid elective. content is pretty interesting & she does a good job of teaching. they can be a bit repetitive/boring to listen to at times. pop quizzes which are so easy but count for attendance. 2 midterms and a final + hw. if you study slides and textbook content is exactly the same as exams, so you will do well! overall easy, she is super sweet!
Good Econ 501 Teacher.
