Prof Smith is a great teacher. He is always ready to help you with assignments or material. His tests are reasonable and he lets you know what is going to be on them. I had Global Business with him and i definitely recommend him.
Professor is very articulate, knowledgeable, and helpful. Probably one of the best Professors in the business department.
I recommend this professor, he was very helpful and I walked out of that class with a lot of knowledge about global business. The test are resonable i studied the powerpoints and passed.
He is a good teacher, very organized and he knows what he is teaching. Tests are hard, but if you go to class and review the material, you'll be ok.
The tests are based off the slides. No need for book. He knows his business! Test questions are a bit confusing so you really need to understand what he is talking about.
Tests are not as easy as you might think. Most test questions are based off slides. Download 5th edition Global Business book online for free it covers the same material.
He is a great teacher Yes his test can be tricky. But this guy knows it all He tries very hard to bring examples into his lectures. Make sure you go to class He counts attendance. If you struggle talk to him go see him in his office Make sure you do your writing papers perfect he will count all grammar and punctuation He is a great guy also
Great professor well-educated and shares real world experiences to help grasp the concepts better. He really cares for his students you are not just a number to him. Make sure you study and work hard on the essays he assigns. He is tough on his grading. But it was still and enjoyable class.
Took this class during Maymester. He's a really good teacher, and will work with you. He explains everything in depth, to where there is no confusion. Knows his business. I recommend him! OH! And he's funny.
This class is probably the most boring class I have taken at UTEP. Keeping myself interested in what Professor Smith is trying to say is nearly impossible. His essays are just as boring as the class and are hard to get a good grade in, no matter what you say. Good luck paying attention and getting a good grade in essays and tests.
Really awful experience, the most boring class I have ever taken at UTEP. and i thought history was boring. Lectures are boring, too picky with essays. You need good handwriting to make him happy. He tries too hard to make a joke, but hes just too lame. Avoid this teacher.
One of the most boring classes I have ever been in!
I thought this was a business class and not an english class. He just made it really difficult with 3 essays for his class, and they have to be hand written in class, he is insane.
This man should stop teaching business courses and go to the English course and teach there, better yet he should retire or get help teaching his course. Nothing to do with the material, he expects too much of you in a short amount of time. He isn't considerate, has no empathy and tries to much to make the class interesting. NO!
The class is not THAT bad if you go every time and are able to not get bored with his lectures. He lectures every time. There are 4 exams worth 100pts each. There is 2 essays each worth 200ppts. The final draft has to be written in class by hand without internet or notes just one index card. If you can avoid him, do so.
I have got to say that professor Smith is one of the best professors teaching at utep, he cares about his students, he gives great advice, his class is pretty straight forward if you make room to study, these is no reason why a student shouldn't receive a B or higher in his class.
you must read
Very hard, gives an excessive amount of assignments to be turned in every week online, a lot of them are essays and papers. Big projects are done in groups that he assigns which means you end up doing all the work, barely even talks about Global Business which is the whole point of the class and gives very brief instructions on assignments.
Great Guy, he is there for you although I did not think every student actually go into his office to talk to him. He might seem a bit tough sometimes but if you talk to him, do the essays and reports on time, you'll do fine. Don't be lazy, guys!
Too many assignments due at once. Puts you in groups so you don't get to choose. Makes you do a group presentation which is unnecessary. All his quizzes are pop quizzes on information not covered yet, so you must learn on your own. I don't recommend him unless you're willing to work for a "good grade", not an A.
Good teacher, overall. The writing part isn't as bad as everyone makes it seem. They're SUMMARIES of articles, and out of those articles you make an essay, not too hard at all. Test questions are a little more critical thinking, but if you go over the lecture slides, you will be alright. The group project wasn't too bad either.
The professor is very specific. I learned a lot in his class and he challenges in a good way.
Amazing professor who only makes you do SUMMARIES of articles during the course and then do an essay on those summaries. Anyone who can't do that doesn't belong in college. The other essay is a summary on one article with clear instructions. He actually went up to me to tell me to redo a test I missed. He cares about his students a lot!
Enjoyable class. It helps to take the intro to International Business before taking the Global Business Environment (BUSN 3304) class even though it isn't required.
Good professor, class is very clear. He gives assignments per week but very easy ones that can be done in 20 min.
Tests are from the book, you must read to pass them
He's a cool guy. Very interesting lectures. The only thing is that he gives a ton of homework mainly summary articles and essays. Felt more like an English course to me.
More like an English class than a business class but overall a pretty rewarding class to have taken. Smith gives clear lectures but doesn't go much detail into projects or papers in person. Most of this information you need to read online which can be a bit confusing. A very respectable teacher with lots of global business experience.
Be prepares for tough exams!
bori ng class. Didnt need often to pass. just read the material do the homework easy a
He makes you write summaries on articles read in class and a big part of the course grade is an essay that takes him all semester to grade. Feels more like an English class to be honest and the tests are kind of tough. Don't take if you are one of those who is looking for an "Easy A". You actually have to put in the work.
Good professor who gives interesting lectures. He expects a lot from students, but if you show up & do the work you will do well. He provides a clear syllabus + calendar. There are lots of writing assignments + two group presentations. He provides an exam review sheet prior to exams; if you study what's on there you will pass the exams.
If you're looking for an easy A, look somewhere else. He's a tough grader and treats this class like an English class. He does not like to be "challenged" and can be condescending at times. He's an interesting guy but I would recommend a different professor. He doesn't take attendance but missing class isn't a good idea. The textbook is a must.
If I was casting for a T.V show about college life, he would be the no nonsense professor. If you are a focused student you will come out of it with an A. He applies his real world experiences in global business dealings into his lectures. Group presentations and deadlines are nerve wrecking but you come out the other end feeling accomplished.
He needs to retire. Yeah he's inspirational but will hate you if you ask too many "stupid" questions (really just questions about clarification) and doesn't like to be challenged. Don't take him if you can take another professor.
Worth taking, he will challenge you and group you with some strangers for the whole semester! He will relate chapter topics with real world situations he has gone through to better illustrate, which makes it a lot more interesting. Learned a lot in this course. Recommend!
Workload is heavy upfront with lots of written papers and a 7 page essay due w/in the first couple of weeks. If you can get passed that, you will be fine. Tests are based on lecture and book, must attend to get all possible test questions. Very intelligent man and has high expectations of his students. Not crazy about the group project assignment.
If experience had a voice, it would be that of Laird Smith. He makes you work for the grade both individually and in groups (I wasn't very fond of the latter though). Be sure to take notes and read the chapters. His tests are all multiple choice but challenging. Take a class with Smith, and in the words of Kevin Hart, "You gonna learn today".
This Professor changed my life! Easy A
Challenging class due to his high standards for student compliance. Tests are challenging, and he is a tough grader when it comes to the group projects. Essay is due at the beginning of the semester, and he does not offer extra credit. If you like a challenge, take his class. It will be rewarding in the end due to his high intellect.
This professor is pretty decent. You MUST pay attention to his lectures, as his example stories are always on his exams. Take good notes on what he says. He can be a tough grader, but he does seem to care about his students. He's really knowledgable on this topic through life experience.
If you're lazy and don't study, you won't pass. Took him in the Maymester and it was fast paced but fairly easy. Essays, Mindtap Quizzes, and 3 tests, but everything in his lectures are on the test; there are no surprises. Makes the topic interesting. Strongly recommend.
Professor Smith is a strict teacher. Tests consist of what he lectures and book. Very strict on essay. Easy A if you write fluently, attend class, and read the chapters.
His tests are confusing because of the questions he asks. He tests about the examples he provides during the lecture. You have to be good a writing because he gives a major essay as an assignment.
This professor is somewhat hard to get a read on-- sometimes he is friendly and funny, other times he is unnecessarily harsh. My main complaint is that he has effectively made this an English class (LOT of writing). There is also a group project (yay!). Everything on the tests come from his lecture, so definitely attend every class if possible.
Long and boring lectures. Do not argue with him, he does not like the idea of students being smarter than him.
He looks a little scary but he's actually an easy going guy if you go talk to him. Tests are based on online reading and he will give a review sheet. For the group project he won't grade you too harshly if its very obvious your partners didn't practice or do their part.
Had a very upsetting experience with Professor Smith. Had a simple question about blackboard & my grade from the previous semester, but Mr. Smith responsed as if I was asking for a ridiculous favor. God forbid you care about your grade and challenge a mistake.
He is a good professor and knows about what he is talking, but the lectures are long and sometimes boring. He's kind of rude with the students because he doesn't like to be wrong. There is one essay and a group presentation, but he provides good help. Study, do your homework, and you will be great.
He's the worst professor I've ever had. He is not helpful at all. When you try to ask for help he makes it seem as you're doing him a favor. Had a very bad experience with him. I don't recommend him at all.
Very opinionated and doesn't like to be wrong even when proven to be inaccurate. Ridiculous about the paper and has worthless study guides for the exams. I have never had a professor that can be this rude to students. Extremely unprofessional. I would tell you to take someone else... but there is no one else.. Good luck :-)
I was really dreading this class because I thought it would be difficult. Trust me the comments about too much writing are not accurate. You have to give a very short summary of 3 articles and one paper. His lectures can be boring, but his exam questions are about examples only provided in his lectures, so, you should attend all lectures.
Took him during maymaster best decisions would not last all semester he is extremely rude and does not care if he gives ugly comments infant of other classmates. He always has to be right and changes the subject when proven wrong.
Three exams, online quizzes, one essay and one group project. The exams aren't crazy hard, just study the slides and pay attention in class. He tells a lot of stories. He is a very knowledgeable man but you probably won't learn very much besides some vocabulary if you don't already know it. He lets the class do a lot of teaching for him.
His PowerPoint lectures are pretty interesting, however he doesn't seem to give that much of them.. Most of his class is doing articles, an essay, and a group project. He always confuses the class with random assignments lol. But overall, he is not that bad. His class is definitely passable. Do all the work and extra credits, and you'll pass.
The first few weeks of class are the hardest. If he knows your name you're likely to pass with an A. He only remembers the name of the students he likes.
This class is the English class of Busn. Many articles to read and many papers to write. Group project was the most intense part. You use the book only to study for exams. I find it funny that most students get offended when called out for talking through his lecture. He WILL call you out. Grades very easy as long as you complete assignment.
BUSN 3304 taken with him was the only class during my whole studies at UTEP that I enjoyed. He shares a lot of experience based knowledge, and most importantly, you learn things that help you towards your business life in this class specially with Laird Smith as the professor.
Professor Smith himself is great, he's super knowledgeable and rather engaging for the topic. The assignments are many and the points are limited. The entire class is only worth 400 points with the tests and an essay being majority. There is a group project which he seemed fairly lenient over. Ace the tests and you'll be fine, READ THE TEXT.
You are required to buy Cengage with MindTap access. In my class, I had to write a paper, 4 discussion boards, and 2 case studies. During his lectures, he is very open and friendly while also giving more information that can help you on the assignments or the exams. The MindTap assignments don't reflect what will be on the exams, so study.
This class was not hard, its just a lot of work from the very beginning. Be read to read every chapter, and listen to his narrated slides. His test are not hard, but give yourself time to study because its a lot of information. If you fail his 3 test you can still pass the class with doing all the other work.
There is a lot of work to do in this course, but as long as youre organized and keep up with his calendar youll be just fine. Professor Smith is also extremely helpful and holds Q&A sessions to address any question or concern you may have. You can also email him directly and he responds within a day. I loved this course just because of him
Make sure you are organized with this class and pay attention to due dates. He assigns two papers they are not that bad but they are due within the first month of class and he also assigns a group project due towards the end of the semester. Not that bad, he also assigned my class three case studies plus discussions every two weeks or so.
This class is NOT HARD it is just a lot of work. If you organize yourself you will be able to pass with an easy A. Professor is very willing to help out his students and make sure they understand the material. Great guy .
Easiest class to take! It is a lot of work but its very moderate, not super long or time consuming. Will have a group project and an essay but will split the essay into parts which makes it a piece of cake. Has a lot of dad jokes that arent super cheesy, hell make you laugh every now and then.
Professor Smith is a nice man and is very accessible outside of class. The exams are easy as long as your read and go through his narrated slides. The work is a lot and can get annoying but just put in effort and be consistent and it will be easy to get an A. Good luck!
His class is not difficult as long as you put in the work. Essentially it is an essay, a group project, homeworks, and exams, some people said it was a lot of work but it was really manageable. He is extremely well versed in the subject, I really enojyed his class.
Professor Smith is not a bad professor. His lectures are really boring, and it is difficult to stay engaged in class. At times he can make you feel dumb so if you want to participate make sure you know what you are talking about. Tests are difficult, you will have one essay at the beginning of the semester, and a group project. He is okay overall.
Dr. Smith's class is work heavy. I wouldn't recommend taking him if you have other hard classes that semester. Attendance is mandatory and gives in class work. He assigns a big essay within the first month of class. Lectures are boring but he gives good real world examples. Studying is a must, our class failed the first exam with a 64 class avg.
All written assignments. All inconsistent grading. Too explanatory or not explanatory at all. Wack class. Cool guy. Not cool as a grader. Take someone else please. You think it's easy but if you like getting A's probably don't take him. You have to answer everything according to the text book. The text book sucks
Grade relies on a group project and an essay he wont grade until the end of the semester. Attendance does count, so don't skip class. He's a good teacher, but the content is boring some. He allows you to redo most assignments and offers credit if you are absent for a class participation, but doesn't curve. If you do all the work, you'll get an A
Mr. Smith is a nice man, but not the greatest educator. His exams are difficult and his reviews do not help. His lectures are not very entertaining, but you must attend class because you get graded on "exit tickets" . There's also a 8-10pg essay that drags on for 6 weeks, and a group project that takes up half the semester. Boring class tbh
Take it ONLINE!! it's easier. You only get 2 exams plus the group project. The exams are essay form and can use your notes/book.
This professor was terrible. First week into class we had an essay regarding your background due then after 2 more weeks we had another essay due for something very irrelevant for the course. I emailed him twice and he didn't answer. Group project that accounts for most of your grade and exit tickets that count for attendance
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN. At the beginning of the semester he gives a cultural essay just to turn around and give you another essay that 9 pages. He makes you pay for Cengage($125) for only 10pts all together. Backhanded responses to concerns. Confusing instructions for assignments. Overall the whole class is a mess and he should be reevaluated.
Not sure what to think about this professor, at the beginning he gives a cultural essay that has nothing to do with the class, he also gives another essay and a group project. He requires to get cengage which is worth only 10 points. He does gives a lot of work and it takes a lot from your time, even more than your major classes.
The only thing that I didn't like about this class is the group project. The exams are easy, he gives a study guide. At the end of the class there is an activity that counts as attendance. There is also a paper due at the beginning, it seems a lot at the beginning but the last few weeks of class is just the group presentations. No final exam.
If possible take this class as a Maymester it goes by really fast and the Professor takes into consideration that it is only two weeks. He is a really great and funny Professor and his lectures are interesting. All you need to succeed in the class is to be present, work hard on your essay, and study for the exams.
Took professor Smith for a Maymester course. This was the best idea. He was very funny, personable, and make topics easy to understand. I was nervous about taking a 2 week course, but this was very do-able and easy! I thoroughly enjoyed this professor! We had homework for each chapter and one essay to do.
It's a lot of work in the beginning but as the semester progresses the material will gradually get easier. It's worth it because there is no final exam. The practice quizzes in the textbook are literally the exams so use them! He gives extra credit, and this helped me bump up my grade. Check winter semester for alternative professor.
Graded by very few things. Group project is worth the majority of your grade. An essay is assigned that has nothing to do with the course. Was not sympathetic to any personal struggles. Any opportunity to satisify and avoid this course with any alternative should be utilized. All test are based upon in class lectures and in class work.
One of the worst professor at UTEP. I dont know how UTEP hires like this professors. Very unprofessional fully depends on his mood and very egoistic. he thinks professor is like god we all have to give them a separate respect type person. Not committed to the syllabus he tell during beginning of the class. I would just say Utep should replace him.
Dr. Smith is a very smart guy. However sometimes his mood affects class so just be careful when you hear him say comments in the middle of class. His class is somewhat hard but only because it is so boring. You have an essay that is given to you right away but it is easy as he breaks it up week by week and literally tells you what he wants. Beware!
This class was so stressful it had 3 in person exams, 3-5 page essay, cengage homework, mandatory attendance, and a final group projects. On top of these things we also had to attend 4 workshops out of class for a grade. If you need this class please try to find another professor as his lectures are very boring. Heavy grader on essay too.
Prepare yourself to fail. UNNECESSARILY hard class, 40 questions per exam (confusing wording), attend workshops out of your own time (not considerate for students with jobs), two month essay, project. One of the worst classes I have ever taken.
Professor Smith is very knowledgeable on this topic so his lectures are very fluent. The essay is fairly easy, I do recommend reviewing it with the TA to get a better understanding of what is being asked for to get a good grade. Exams can be a little hard if you do not study for them, but if you study they should be simple.
This was the worst teacher I took well attending college. He was super strict and even racist in some cases. He made class boring and made it hard to want to be there, he is narcissistic and grades depending how much he likes you. If he dosent like you then you simply won't pass his course no matter how hard you try. Can't stress it enough AVOID.
To sum up, my experience with this instructor is that he is assignment-heavy and requires mandatory attendance, and like all other comments on here about his class, it is pretty much the same. However, none of the tasks were hard; he gave self-explanatory instructions on what he wanted to submit. Do it right and pay attention.
Professor Smith is smart, caring, and gives clear instructions, so you always know what to do. Assignments are easy if you stay on track. Take this class during Maymester. Grades: 2 tests (study lectures!), Cengage work, exit tickets, and a culture essay. The only thing i did not like was buying a $150 book we only used for two weeks.
I truly wish UTEP had more professors offering this subject. I took this class during the summer, and it has been very demanding. The professor has mood swings, affecting how he talks and behaves, creating a weird vibe. The class isn't too hard, but the essay is confusing. The rubric and class instructions don't match at all. TAs = tough graders.
This class and professor were both rly good. The exams are based on the lectures he gives, & attendance is graded. You do need the textbook, but more for the assignments, but he never touches on it. The essay is easy, & the group project is a little confusing. But he is open to questions and isn't discouraging at all, & actually encourages them
