She is a first time teacher and does not really teach in class. She is confusing and assigns hours of online homework that she admits doesn't pertain to the class or test. She scolded my class when the overall test score was incredibly low for not studying. She doesnt believe in curves either. This woman will ruin your GPA.
She was not very helpful at all. Her tests are full of trick questions that are very difficult to get right because she doesn't help you prepare for them. Stay away at all costs.
She's a horrible teacher. Doesn't explain things well, unclear powerpoints, and impossible tests. She also refuses to curve grades. She's not helpful during/after class. AVOID THE CLASS. Textbook is optional, but if you plan on actually understanding the material you should use it instead of going to class.
Avoid her at all costs!!! She doesn't teach, her tests are impossible, and then she blames you for not doing the work even if you put in the time. Other professors for the same class have tests that are actually fair and asses the material you learn in class. Chemistry is hard, but she makes it worse whereas others actually try to teach!!
absolutely the worst teacher ive ever had. she barely teaches in class, flies through her powerpoints then creates an impossible test where you wont understand a single thing. she doesnt believe in curving, EVEN WHEN THE CLASS AVERAGE WAS IN THE 30's!! dont ever take her, shes awful and will ruin your GPA
DO NOT TAKE HER!!!! She is an awful teacher, who is awful at explaining even when you get extra help. Her homework assignment take at least 5 hours to do, and they are nothing like what is on the exams. Also doesn't believe in curving even when her test averages we in the 40%. And a class average of 40%, that says something about her teaching!!!
This professor is the definition of a detriment to learning. Not only are classes useless, but the homework is boring and uneffective, and doesn't relate to the material that is on tests. Doesn't believe in curving, even if the average is in the 40's and believes it's the students' faults because they "didn't study well". STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS.
Avoid this teacher at all costs. Drop the class now, take the W, change your major, take a different science course, postpone pre-med requirements another semester... Extremely difficult but if you do take her class make sure you remember every single word she says in lecture.
She is not helpful in office hours and refuses to curve, even when the class average is in the 40s. Her tests are all trick questions (hence the terrible average) and then she blames the failure on the students not trying hard enough. The numbers speak for themselves, don't take her class.
She is extremely difficult teacher, even if you go to office hours you will have lots of trouble on exams. Tons of homework that have no relevance to exam, lectures boring. Exams are super hard, not curved at all and has "content you have not seen before". Do not take her, unless you like chemistry/are a chem major. Take chem at a community college
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She has a PhD in chemistry and youtube honestly teaches me better than her. The class average on the tests was a 49% and she does not curve. If you are in her class and cannot escape, good luck......
One of the WORST teachers I've ever had! Lectures are dense, graded homework takes hours, tests are unreasonably difficult (with avgs. below 50%), and she refuses to curve. Even worse, she wastes TONS of time telling the class why it's our fault we're failing and that it's because of our choices (ie "having a job, that takes away from study time")!
Dr. McClary really does have good intentions. This is her first time as a professor and she really just doesn't know how to do it. She will more than likely be changing her methods in the future, but I do not recommend taking her.
Ruined my GPA. I'm coming out of this class with very little knowledge of chemistry. When it came to exams she pulled random information and you never knew what to expect. Take the class over the summer if you get stuck with her!
This lady was an absolutely terrible teacher. In highschool I got a 4 on my AP chem exam. I took her class as a frosh engineering student to pad my GPA, and also because it was required. The class was the opposite of what it should be. As someone who did well enough on a standardized test to place out of this course, my grade in no way reflects it.
Let's clear the air. I received a 2 on the AP Chem exam, obviously I needed to take the class. She is WAY harder than ALL other classes. Her curving policy is she won't curve individual exams, but she did curve final grades. EXTREMELY good at responding to email and wants you to understand. Extra credit in-class writing assignments boosted grade A-
I know a lot of people have negative things to say about her, but the class' tests averages were only slightly below other sections. Also, I went to her office hours frequently and she was always will to stay and work problems with you. She did give a lot of homework though. I ended up with an A in the class and I worked for it too.
This teacher grades impossibly; she is arbitrary and unfair in grading and teaching: nothing she says makes sense. Do NOT take her class and stay away from her at all costs because she is not helpful.
Dr. McClary is a very good professor. ALthough her exams are pretty difficult, she is always willing to help her students. She will clarify anything as long as you ask. She gives a lot of bonus points and extra credit. As long as you read, pay attention, and ask question, you will do well in her class
Couldn't wait until the semester to leave a review. AVOID HER! Class is boring. Could teach myself on Youtube in 10% the time. Makes things more confusing. Worst is her online homework is significantly HARDER than all other teachers. I would avoid her lectures, but unfortunately she uses TopHat, a program where she asks questions during class
This professor wastes most of class talking about her running marathons, and often times gives incorrect information while explaining problems on the board...(even though she rarely actually solves the problems).
I think the people on here rating her are the slackers of the class. For those of you hoping to go to medical school; take her class! Her exams more than sufficiently prepare you for the chemistry part of the PS section. Her exams are really tough, but manageable if you study the foundations well enough. Watch out for sig figs!!!!!
Avoid if you can. While as a person you can tell she wants people to do well she does not facilitate that "want". Her ppts were very unclear and not helpful while studying. She cannot solve problems in class off of the top of her head. She has office hours and learning assistants who help a lot. If you do the work you will do fine. It's just a lot.
Great lady. She really does try to help you succeed. Her office hours are very helpful. If you put in the work, you will do well. She can be very picky, but it only helps you in the future. She'll make some mistakes here and there, but who doesn't?
Avoid her if you can. She is confusing, unclear and doesn't explain problems, rather, just does them willy nilly and goes onto the next. You have to be in class to do TopHat (clicker-like) problems. Learning assistant problem solving sessions are the only reason I passed this course. If you try, study hard, look at old tests, you should be ok.
Does not know how to teach to students which is ironic because she got her degree in chemistry eduction. The syllabus has no schedule on it not that it matters because we never end up covering what we are supposed to. Tests are so different and inconsistent that its impossible to prepare. They also focus on stuff we didn't learn.

Professor McClary tries to help students succeed in her class, but it is difficult for her to see where students go wrong with the material. She is not very accommodating in terms of make up exams and her exams are very long and difficult. I would recommend taking another professor for this course.
One of the most challenging Ochem professors. Averages were around 40% for most exams. She is good in the sense that she uses the whiteboard often to methodically go through problems, however she can be erratic at times in her teaching style. Kind woman and always willing to help students out in her office hours
This wasn't my first time having McClary, that being said, I think she was much better the first time. Exams were ONLY syntheses & mechanisms. Organic is a tough class, no matter who you take, she needed way better organizational skills to run the class and promote the effective learning she strived for. Hopefully she'll improve b/c she's nice
McClary is nice and helpful. She explains very well. She is willing to help you in office hours. Review the previous exams, recitation/class problems, understand graphs, do the visual concepts problem in the book and an A is probable and possible. Got an A.
She is easily the worst teacher I have ever had. When a student does not understand a problem, she is very quick to blame their study habits as opposed to her explanation (or lack thereof more often than not). Attendance is mandatory. Despite having to teach yourself solely from the book, you still have to go to her waste of time lecture.
You really have to work for the grade in her class. Avoid here at all cost. Any and I mean any intro gen chem teacher is better. Got in the mid 70 range for all three tests and an 82 on the final and left the class with a solid B+ but i really had to work for it. I got lucky but I know many kids who weren't. Couldn't tell you how many kids had to withdraw.
McClary is a great professor. She is really kind and genuinely cares about her students. You have to work hard to do well- especially outside of class. She is incredible preparation for the MCAT. She is much less likely to want to help you if you don't try to get to know her, so introduce yourself in the beginning of the semester. She is so smart.
Dr. McClary is cool- she is super hard but she cares a lot about how her students do. A lot of these ratings seem like they may be from students who didn't know how much work they would be expected to do outside of school. Get to know her in office hours- it definitely helps.
she is awful! not very clear about what she wants you to know and also doesn't fully understand the material herself. she is an organic chemist and thus expects you to know the organic nomenclature with out ever explaining it to you. if someone had told me she was this bad i would've waited a semester or taken is over the summer
She is by far the worst teacher in GW history with little to no care about her students passing. She won't be staying at GW for long.. Terrible professor and very rude sometimes.
I had a better understanding of the material before lecture than after. She somehow only confuses you more. I had to rely on the text, other students, and tutors to answer any questions I had. In class, she wants people to participate but then if you say something that's wrong she chastises you. Exams are tough. Avoid at all costs.
She is a bad grader. Even if you got the answer right she takes half point off of the total point if you forgot to write the units or significant figures. She doesn't give answers to her final exams after grading it. She doesn't give extra credit or optional exam. The subject is easy but the instructor matters. Don't take it with her.
Nice! She is really nice. The only reason people complain is because she is a tough and very picky grader - BUT she is to everyone which ends up curving. 80'sA. 70'sB, 60'sC. There you go. Go to class. Exams are what she teaches. Notes are great and she is very organized when she writes. Overall, I like her. Study and you will do fine.
A lot of work, but worth it in the end!!
She will challenge you! It is worth it in the end!!!
I loved McClary- I think some of the other reviews were a little unfair to her. You have to work insanely hard for her, or she won't even try to help you. If you really grind out your work, she can really tell who makes an effort. It's worth it in the end- she really does love her job and students.
She curves at the end of the semester and cares a lot about how much effort is put into her class. She cares about her students, if she sees you are trying hard and knows your name she will often be more generous with her grading.
shes just a horrible teacher. shes not much help and luckily this class is only 1 credit. she doesnt care about the class at all and doesnt understand this type of chemistry so just go with it. but there is A LOT of work for this 1 credit
While professor McClary is very good at chemistry and is good at teaching and keeping the class engaged during lecture, she is a very technical grader and is not very clear on questions for her test. She also is not always very respectful of students and can be quite rude.
One of the worst professors I have had during my time at GW. Exams are tough and she is an extremely hard grader. Going to lecture is important but most times the class leaves more confused than when they went in.
Don't get discouraged - Dr. McClary is a great person. As a professor however, she is super confusing even in this 1 credit class. Lab is lab, and it sucks, but these writing papers we have to do are bs. All this work to lead up to 1 big ass paper. She's not super helpful and clear, but she tries to be.
Professor McClary is tough. It is very helpful to have background knowledge when entering her class. It seems that some people are upset that she is a tough grader, and she is. However, if you take the time to study, and do everything that is required of you, you should pass. Do not expect to get an A though, that requires a lot of hard work.
She's very passionate and knowledgeable about her subject. She's though and you have to really like chemistry to find the experience enjoyable. Exam FRQs, she either took points for each mistake instead of weighting each part of the response, or small mistakes carried over. If you go to her office hours she's more forgiving.
I don't think a professor has made me had a subject more than McClary has. Not only does she undermine your intelligence in class but also couldn't understand why people did not understand concepts that she neglected to teach in class. She might be a decent human but she is a horrible professor. Avoid at all cost!
This professor knows how to turn you off to an extent you stop wanting to go to class. Teaching style is nice but it doesn't really help when it comes to the exms/ extra credit quizzes. Organic is hard but with McClary its UNCLEAR what she wants. Goodluck if you're still in Orgo 1 you have a lot to go through mentally & you'll need to grow so much.
Organic with McClary is awful! McClary doesn't really guide you for her exams. You are literally on your own. AVOID.
Such a difficult class. Lectures seem fine, but then exams are near impossible - there is a massive gap between what she teaches and what she expects you know. An exam or quiz every week, though the quizzes are all effectively extra-credit, which is nice. Hardest class I've ever worked for, and just barely going to scrape by with a B
It's Orgo II. It's a hard class. But she makes it clear what she expects and she doesn't throw anything on the exams you've never seen before. If you do her worksheets and go through her expectations you're not going to be shocked by the exam. Also, lots of extra-credit quizzes & the final is a breeze. Curve built into the class.
If you can, avoid her. If you cannot, take a deep breath, as I did, and just work incredibly hard for her class. Those who took Chem in HS had a much greater advantage since the material repeated. I personally didn't have any background, but I still managed to do well! She doesn't curve, but she will give you many free points for random things.
Challenging class but if you are premed , you SHOULD take her because her exams are very similar to MCAT questions . Some people found this class impossible and they are the ones who didn't pay much attention in class or just simply procrastinated all the time. It was a great chem class in overall.
Very picky grader. Thankfully, the final is all multiple choice and she boosts it a lot with extra credit. With the final and extra credit I went from an E to a B-. Keep on top of the online reading and practice problems, and definitely do the practice exams. Practice exams are identical to exams, but with minor changes that can trip you up.
I've spent a lot of time with Dr. McClary over my 4 years at GW, and nobody is lying when they say she's tough. HOWEVER, she really is incredibly sweet and very willing to help if you have questions. She expects a lot out of her students, but don't be afraid to ask her for help because she definitely will. Especially with your final paper in 2123W!
Take anybody but her for Orgo II. She'll only be specific about one concept and expects you to know the rest even though she barely teaches it. She doesn't give partial credit and is very rude in office hours. She gets mad and condescending when you don't understand something she's already explained. I highly recommend that you do NOT take her.
Please avoid at all cost. No matter how hard you study it is almost impossible to pass that class.
Seriously, don't. This class actually ruined my life. I saw the rating and thought I could do it; do not make this mistake. I withdrew in the 7th week because it was horrible, she embarrasses students on purpose, makes you feel dumb, expects you to know tons of material she doesn't teach. Now I have to retake this and it's super inconvenient.
Chemistry itself isn't that challenging, it was just how she portioned the test. For example, if you have a good general understanding about chapter 5, she wont test you on all the different aspects on it. She will make like 20% of the test on 1 combustion analysis problem, but not have any other thing on the other things she taught on chapter 5.
McClary makes you work for it, but if you are a freshman in a hard major like engineering or chem then you wont be that sorry that you took her. If it happens that you have to take her then just chill out and take it as a learning experience. Most kids who take McClary do better than others in the future in other chem/science classes.
Dr. McClary is a wonderful professor and really knows the material. While her tests were difficult, this was her way of testing your knowledge, and if you study hard and go to her lectures regularly, youll do well.
Dr. McClary knows a lot about chemistry and she expects her student to. I personally didnt do too hot on the first test, coming in too cocky, but then started studying for her tests and got As on the next two and final and an A in the class. Theres a curve at the end also. If youre pursuing a major where you actually need to know chem, take her.
She was extremely difficult. If you had not taken ap chem, you had to self teach yourself all the basics. Tests are extremely difficult. Try to find a different professor
This was by far the most difficult class I have ever taken but just stick with it if this is the only class that fits in your schedule. If you can find a different professor I suggest you to take them. Taking AP chem in HS is huge advantage for you to do well in this class which I did not.
Dr. McClary was one of the hardest professors I have had. Her tests are very difficult and she often tests exceptions to general chem rules. She can be condescending in class, but if you go to her office hours or make an appointment she is very nice and more than willing to help you. She doesn't grade homework, so it is up to you to do the work.
Do not take. Simple as that
I really tried to give her a chance I really did, but this was the worst class I've ever taken by far. DO NOT take any class with her if you want to pass with a good grade and not put in excessive work. She is very inaccessible outside the classroom and not helpful when asked questions. Her tests are impossible.
To give you an idea of what this class will do to your GPA, the average on the first exam was in the 30s. McClary explains concepts in a really confusing way, even if you've already done the material in the past. You'll end up teaching yourself everything and just being confused on what she wants. **Make sure you go to her review session**
She asks you stuff in puzzles. The tests are never give me percent composition. It would be like give me the amount per whole of the amount of hydrogen in this reaction that involves you taking steps to decipher what she is telling you just to figure out how to do the problem itself when you find that.
In Dr McClarys class, you will get what you put into. There were something she did not go over in class but she would keep reminding you that stuff was important and please do not skip the reading. If you get to know her, she is not like what the others usually say. Focus on your readings, take practice test, and everything would be just great!
Focus on the things she wants you to learn. Begin the class practicing your calculations. Her exams throughout the semester are unbelievably diffucult, but if you work hard, she rewards you with an extremely, generously easy final exam. If you have another option of professor, take them. Dont wreck your GPA! She is a great person, but dang.
Dr. M is definitely a good professor. Although she is harder than some other chem. professors, she is incredibly knowledgeable about the subject, interested in truly having her students learn and understand (rater than memorize), and will set you up with a great foundation of chemistry. Dedicate to this class and you can definitely do well.
McClary was the only professor available for Chem 1111 in the spring. She is a super hard grader but is also very accessible outside of class. Make sure to go to her review sessions because a lot of those questions exam on the exam but still have a difficult twist to it. Get ready to breathe chemistry everyday this semester.
I highly recommend Professor McClary if you are premed/predental. I'm taking orgo right now and all thanks to her I'm way ahead of my classmates. To get an A, you must put in your best work--skim textbook, attend weekly review sessions, office hours etc. I got a D on my first exam and ended up getting an A in the class after doing all those.
There is no curve for this class, another surprise, McClary says the curve is your lab grade, which is pretty substantial but not enough to make you feel comfortable. 3 tests and a final determine your grade, and ALL are cumulative. Partial credit is UNLIKELY. Expect any mistakes you make on a problem to equal 0 points for that question.
Don't take this class under any circumstances! your GPA will go the ground, and you will be depressed the whole semester. The lecture is a thing, and the tests are a completely different thing.
She just doesn't teach what is relevant to her exams and compared to other professors, her exams are at least twice as hard. He curve doesn't really exist and in past years I was told other people had to grade her exams so they could actually pass.
This class was awful, If you ever want to feel worthless everyday then take McClary. Her tests reflect nothing that you learn in class, and forget about going to her office hours unless you want to feel like you are stupid and worthless. Partial credit? Not a thing, she will give you no points even if you understand what you are doing. Avoid this!!
This class has been almost impossible. I have never studied harder for a class yet there is no good results. The class is fully based on tests and they are extremely difficult. I would never recommend to anyone taking this class.
By the first week you realize that McClary only responds to questions by blaming you for not being prepared and telling you to review your notes. Mcclary's tests are the hardest relative to the tests of other classes and make you wish you hadn't been a fool and not checked rate my professor before signing up for her class.
This class made me never want to ever do chemistry ever again in my life. Get one of the other more reasonable professors, avoid this class.
She's nice, she can explain the concepts well but her tests are insanely hard. She expects too much of the students. Ask for as much help as you can, always go to her review sessions, stemworks, and office hours. Basically, take all her advice on how much you should study. If that doesnt work at least you have freshman forgiveness.
She is an absolutely nice person but she should avoid teaching. She is accessible out of class, she hosts review sessions every week but this does not mean this class is easy. The lecture is heavy and she wants you to understand everything perfectly. For those who made the mistake taking her class; she curves at the end.
The other reviews are correct. She is a really terrible teacher and and even worse lecturer. Expect no help out of class and insanely harsh grading. Avoid at all costs.
Worse professor I had in the university. Will make you hate chemistry for the rest of your life. Even studying hard and giving your best will not be enough, you won't learn a thing. Any other professor will be better, avoid her.
WORST TEACHER EVER! In order to PASS this class you have to be on her good side. If you do not participate in class and go to her office hours then she will not know your name when she is grading and grade you harshly! I withdrew from the course the last day possible and then to reward all the kids that had the balls to stay, she gave extra credit!
Her exams have gotten easier but she can still be a harsh grader. McClary can skim through a few of the topics but she definitely cares for her students. Participate in class and go to her before/after class or during office hours so she knows your name and she will be less harsh when shes grading you!
She is a very intelligent and kind professor. However, I believe that she is way too smart for us. I would suggest to her to dumb down her lectures. I really like how every week there are multiple opportunities to get extra help from a TA. She still grades hard, but sometimes she will regrade a test. She will know your name if you let it happen
Do not listen to the comments that if you are on her good side she will grade you less harsh. You should not have to be on a professor's "good side" to be graded fairly. Do not take this class if you want a good gpa. Other professors have a 20+ better test grade avg on every test. Obviously, something is wrong. Anything is better than this class.
She's a wonderful human who is actually trying to help you without spoiling. She memorized the names of everyone in the class by the second week (+70 students). Some people might not like her teaching style, because she wants you to learn, not just pass. For example, during her office hours she would only help you if you know what you want to know.
Shes a terrible professor. Has two words on her slides. and the exam is like from chegg but the hardest questions which i wonder if she can even do considering the fact she obviously has solutions and her teaching doesnt correlate the hear heavy exams. She really needs to understand that if shes going to give a hard exam she has to teach properly.
SHE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR
Get to know professor outside of class!!! She is an amazing person and establishing that connection can really be the deal breaker if you are in between a letter grade. If she sees you are putting in the work, she will take that into consideration. You still have to work your hardest outside of class using different resources!
McClary is a very difficult teacher. She goes over topics very fast and overcomplicates almost everything. The exams are very difficult and the multiple choice is brutal. Beware!
Though Dr. McClary was a bit difficult, she was extremely nice which helped. Further, she took requests for office hours, making sure you understood everything.
Do not take this class online if you want to do well chemistry. She's a nice person but is too smart for the class she teaches. She speeds over topics and expects you to know things she is teaching. Office hours and review sessions don't help and are not accessible to everyone. Trust me, the positive reviews are either chem geniuses or class pets.
She is a terrible teacher. She has review sessions and office hours at times that I couldn't always get to and she would straight up teach new topics in those review sessions and would just skim the over in the ACTUAL lecture. If you want proof of how bad she is, the exam average for our first two tests the averages were a 62 and 59 respectively.
She's a wonderful person, but if you want a good grade do not take this class. Lectures and exams were not consistent with each other. Not to mention, new content was taught during review sessions, which was held at night. No curves or bonuses, and test averages were lowest of all other classes. You can work hard, but you won't be rewarded for it.
Lectures are very unorganized and unclear. Exams are primarily multiple choice and no partial credit is given even on questions with multiple parts. The online ALEKS homework is fine but should count for way more of the final grade just because of the time it takes. No curve or extra credit was given. Don't take this professor if you don't have to.
If you take this class with this professor, there is a 100% chance that you will not learn anything. Expects you to be at the level of expertise in chemistry as she is and don't dare ask any questions because she will grill you. The exams are impossible and I genuinely believe she does not want her students to succeed. Avoid this professor.
Avoid Dr. McClary if you can. Her class was extremely difficult, and was even worse since we were online due to COVID. Our class had the lowest exam averages of all 3 CHEM1111 classes and she was not helpful. After reaching out to her SEVERAL times, her only advice to the class was "keep reviewing." Also, barely any partial credit and no curves
If you can't come to office hours, or the study sessions she has (where she teaches new material and where she stops she continues in class from the same place) like fam this isn't my only class. When we brought up how there was a grade difference with her other classes, she told us to study harder, even though we spent so much time studying.
This professor is a nightmare. The ALEKS homework takes hours to finish and you don't even learn things that are related to the class or exams. Her explanations of concepts and problems was mediocre at best or completely unhelpful as she thinks the students are at her level. Exams had negative credit with averages of 50-60%. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
If she is your only option for a chem1111 class, I strongly recommend you take it next semester with another professor. I did not feel supported as a student or was provided resources to succeed. She has the lowest test averages of any chem prof and discourages questions of any kind. She is not good at teaching and not worth your $80k education.
Honestly, Professor McClary gets a lot of hate but I really think that's just because she teaches Gen Chem. It is a hard class and you will need to put in the work to do well. Everyone knows chem is hard, but Professor McClary takes the time to learn everyone's name and is really nice despite her hard grading and very rough subject matter.
If you are not a chem major and are just taking this class to fulfil another requirement, I strongly advise seeking another professor. Professor McClary basically just lectures and does so really poorly: be prepared to learn on your own. Also, the exam averages were the lowest among any other chem 1111 class and grades are not scaled.
Terrible professor. Exam averages were the worst out of any professor. While the exams might be the same, she is a much harsher grader than the other professors. I'm 99% she doesn't know some of the stuff she teaches. Other students have pointed out flaws in her explanations.
The worst. Grading is punitive. Almost impossible to receive above a B due to her absolute grading. I came to class twice at 9:00 on the dot (when it starts) my grade dropped automatically to a b-. One of those times it was the first day and I got lost. I am not exaggerating. I have never heard a single person say a good thing about her teaching.
I urge you to take any other chem professor. Her lectures are so hard to follow and you have to be a teachers pet to get on her good side. She actually recommended to my class that we consider dropping a class if our workload was too much. She pretends to care about the well being of her students but refuses to take any accountability for herself.
Racist professor towards arabs. She thinks this is a chemistry timed competition. I took her 4 and she still makes me mad I hope she loses her job.
Part 1: If I could give professor McClary a 0 I would. This lady has done nothing but make my life a living hell. I don't understand how anyone can be such a lousy professor. She gets sidetracked very easily, contradicts herself continuously, and fails to teach the class. We are in general chemistry there is no reason to talk about Organic Chem
Part II: She is very unapproachable and even when you go to her office hours I was met with nothing but a nasty attidue. The conversation between us did not feel like a teacher and student but a friend to a friend. Her tests are very hard, and she is a terrible person and teacher overall.
Part III: I will never understand how GW will allow someone like her to teach a class. She is actually the worst person that a chem person can come across. If you have the option, please PLEASE avoid taking her class at all costs. Find a different chemistry teacher or get your gen chem credit elsewhere. The tears and stress are not worth it.
She is the worst teacher I have had in my entire life. I genuinely do not understand how this university hired her. I could not advocate for you to take ANY OTHER teacher more. She is unbelievably unfair, her test grading includes ZERO partial. credit. 20% of class was passing... barely.
Worst professor at GW. Her grading policy is cruel and disheartening, no partial credit, no extra credit. Seems nice in class, but it's fake- go to her office hours and find out. Exams are not based on anything from lecture, not that you'll learn anything from lecture anyways. If you care about your GPA take this with literally anyone else PLEASE.
You can read the other student's ratings, I just have to say that she's the only professor I've ever thought was evil. She does not want her students to succeed, she wants you to fail. She thinks she's better than you and wants you to know that. Take with anyone else or take anywhere else.
This best describes how I feel about this woman: "And I don't even want you back, I just want to know If rusting my sparkling summer was the goal And I don't miss what we had, but could someone give A message to the smallest man who ever lived? Were you sent by someone who wanted me dead? Did you sleep with a gun underneath our bed?" - Taylor Swift
I found Prof McClary caring & nice, & she wants her students to succeed. But, she's an extremely hard grader, with limited partial credit. Her tests and teaching seem to be better for students with gen chem foundation. Her difficult tests combine with the chem dept having a grade system -
If you couldn't tell by the 100 other 1 star ratings, do NOT take this class. I have studied EVERY DAY since the semester has begun, yet I'm still failing. The grading criteria is so terrible, it's impossible to pass. If it's the last thing I do, I will warn everyone else in the world to do ANYTHING but take her class. Don't find out the hard way.
I think having this professor was the worst experience I have had college. She is truly just out to get you- does not want to see you succeed. Like half the class dropped before the grades got scaled up (which she never told us would happen) and still a lot of the class hardly passed. Take ANYONE else, the emotional trauma is not worth it.
She clearly resents having to teach gen chem instead of orgo. Tests are completely unfair and unrelated to the aleks assignments. She was being investigated for unfair treatment and grading. You can work your ass off, but you still aren't going to get the grade you deserve. The test averages were in the 30s.
She is the absolute worst professor at GW. Aleks is long and annoying: you basically have to teach yourself everything. There are 3 tests and NO partial credit nor leniency. Homework and lab adds up to maybe ~30% but if you do poorly on tests, she doesn't count that 30% of Aleks or mandatory lab. Don't take her, she is a horrible professor.
I think she honestly has a lot of loneliness in her life that she takes out on students. Over half the class was failing and she emailed saying when she was in college she had to drop a calc class even though she got an A on the first exam. She also randomly said she never has guests over at her house which was kinda telling if you ask me.
Where do I even begin with her? Taking her class feels like walking on shards of glass every day. She is the most discouraging person you will ever meet. She never fails to boast about herself while bringing you down. I beg you, take any other professor. She's not worth the tears.
I don't know if you could tell by the other awful reviews, but there is no way this lady should be teaching. She will make sure that you know she is smarter than you and go on different tangents about her boring life. I need her to have a wake-up call and quit; she is not meant to teach any class, let alone be ahead of the department.
Tough class with an unforgiving grading policy. Tests bear little relation to lectures or assignments. But unstuck AI helped me prepare and salvage my grade.
good professor, ;learned a lot
This lady was a nightmare. Her exams were so random no matter how much we prepared. It was like a gamble guessing what was gonna be on the exam. We never had proper lectures, it felt so disorganized. Never take her. If there is no other professor, wait another semester. Spare yourself of the PTSD.
This professor genuinely made me want to drop out of college fully because she demotivated me to the point where I thought I was incapable but in reality she's just sad with her life and takes it out on teenagers. She is impossible. Don't take this class and save yourself.
We could earn points back on the first exam, and the extra credit opportunities really helped my grade. It's definitely a class where you should make sure you have enough time in your schedule to dedicate to it. She's welcoming at office hours, and going to as many as you can makes a big difference. Exams are in line with what's covered in lecture.
Prof McClary understands what she is talking about. Chem1111 is a hard course in general, but all professors utilize the same exams and the content is correlated to what we learn. If you put in the work to actually understand and know how to apply the concepts, you will do well.
I don't know why tf she has so many bad ratings. She taught my class very effectively. She is also very nice and social. I am a big believer in rate my professor but her rating is not accurate.
