Kiburi is an awesome professor. She's really excited about the subject matter, and it definitely shows. She goes over MT and final questions so you know what to expect when you take those exams. Best of all, she's pro-student. Definitely take her class.
She uses powerpoint for lecture (a lot of notes)and tends to ramble on about unimportant personal information. She's great during office hours. Readings are very important to class. Gives pop quizzes.
Professor Kiburi is a great teacher due to her passion for the subject. Her quizzes are tough and you must attend lectures. She gives out really helpful study guides to help you prepare for tests, but they can still be challenging.

She tries to be your "ally" but when you point out something negative about her teaching style, she gets offended. the reader was $50, very poor quality, though the readings were interesting, there is a ton of writing even though you dont get writing GE, midterm and final was hard
Great professor, interesting class b/c there is a lot of discussion but could be overwhelming. I hated the pop quizzes that took 15% of our grade b/c I never read. Lots of reading. Midterms are pretty easy depending on your TA. Switch if you can. Overall, good class and easy if you put in the effort
The course concepts are interesting, but the reader is way to long! She is not very helpful and when you try to suggest something to her, she gets defensive and rude. The final was too long and unfair. Don't take this class if she is teaching it!
Passionate about subject matter, open to free discussion/debate to a certain extent; times when clarity is an issue, TAs are very helpful, very knoledgeable about subject matter however, can be scanty w/ assistance when she feels she has done enough to supply adequetinfo, evenifstudentisstillunclear.
Horrible Professor. Her TA Tometi was even worse. They're both unclear and unhelpful. When you ask a question, they get defensive and tell you to go look it up. There were 3 papers, a midterm, and a final. BTW: Prof. Harrison uses the TWO ESSAY FORMAT, NOT THREE AS SHE MADE US DO. CLASS SUCKED
There's lots of reading, but if you do it, the quizzes and tests are easy. She says she wants students to do well, and she does. The study guides she e-mailed us were very helpful.
I loved Professor Kiburi--Her class was by far the best that I have taken at UC Davis. She was very approachable, very friendly, and very intelligent. She is always pro-student and will always tell it like it is. She's awesome!
Came 10 minutes late to class everyday and add another 10 for the time it took her to setup laptop. At times talked with sexual connotations. It was disgusting. Also mentioned her own sex life. As well, her lectures were confusing and all over the place. Don't take her if you can.
She is awesome! I loved her class. The study guides helped a lot! She is pro-student and entertains the class very well. TAKE HER!
The only word I have to describe this professor is ridiculous. She thinks that she is being helpful when in actuality she is not and is makes no sense in the process. And since when is citizen spelled cititzin, and teaches spelled teashes, and calvinism spelled calvanism, and coercion spelled coersio
I really enjoyed the class - she loves the stuff and it makes all the difference. very easy to talk to outside of class. grading is fair and she tries to help. she cares about her students. TAs were absolutely horrible though and discussion was pointless.
Dr. Kuburi is such an amazing professor. Her teaching style is very effective. Tests are on point and grading is very fair. She strongly believes in her teaching and what she teaches. Despite other students' negative comment about her and her "making-out", they just probably did not do well
Prof. Kiburi has been one of my least favorite professors at UCD. Her powerpoint lectures are insanely boring. Her tests are heavily based on applying theories to her poorly-chosen videos. The test format is awful. Take this class from someone else.
I honestly do not know what any of you guys are talking about Dr. Kiburi being unprofessional and making out with her husband. I took her 132 Gender class and let me tell you, she was extremely professional and warm to all of her students. She just was not a teacher, but in many ways she was a helpf

One of my least fav profs at Davis. It's hard to take notes from her powerpoint lecs, bc she would forget to show the slide that she was talking about, then not give you any time to copy the info down. She also didn't put the slides online. Very low average on quizzes; midterm essays focus on videos
She is great! She is passionate and stimulates the class during lectures. She is open-minded and eager to get to know her students. She's entertaining and is quite un-censored. Take her!
it's obvious that all these rude comments are being left by the same loser. Professor Kiburi is one of the BEST professors at UCD. She is REAL and very PRO-STUDENT. Her study guides were helpful. She is very helpful during office hours too. Take her classes!!
I love her teaching style. She realizes that we students are human, not machines and can only do so much work/reading. Besides, the reading was interesting. Highly recommended!!
thought provoking, engaging, insightful, and most importantly commited to students..assiments are fair and relevent..she'll make you smile...don;t leave UCD with out taking her class...strongly recomend Dr.Kiburi
Dr. Kiburi was very helpful in helping me succeed in both classes. She gives a very thorough study guide - she practically gives you the answers in the review session the lecture before the test. She is very pro student and is accessible - maybe naysayers should take her for upper divs instead!
Very approachable and she is a student ally. Quizzes are worth too much but tests aren't too hard. Do your readings and you should get at least a B.
She was an awsome teacher! Sometimes she beleived so strongly about a certain topic that it would seem like you were in a preaching church and it sometimes made you feel very passionate too about the certain topic that you wanted to clap afterwards. Nobody in the class sleeps, you are always attentive because she expresses everything interestingly.
she talks a lot about her personal life, which can get kinda uncomfortable, but at least she's open and honest about it. and her name is spelled Lalia Kiburi.
it was a fun class. she made gender an interesting subject! and yea, she does talk about her personal life a lot. the tests in her class are easy cuz she gives you a study guide!
Dr. Kiburi is very enthusiastic about what she teaches. By the end of the class you really actually care about the material she teaches. She is very pro student and tries to help you by clarifying the assignments to the point of handing you the outline you need to follow. Grading is challenging. You really have to work for the A.
Dr. Kiburi was a passionate prof. The exams were challenging but fair. She claims to be pro-student and is. Excellent class.
The Blue Book exams are timed! If you want a bunch of stress over nothing then take this course.
imposes wayyyyy too much anti-bush sentiment into her lectures when they are unnecessary. includes other irrelevant studies into her lectures. she just reads off her powerpoint slides, then reads the inverse of what it says on the slides, which really bogs down the lectures because she talks tooooo much and tooo fast. very unclear professor
The quizzes r easy (multiple choice n short answers). 5 total!! Stay away if u dont like essays> there's a ten page research pper (very stressful) and midterms and final contain essays. The lecture is really interesting. u read two chapters a week. there's the reader and an outside book. the outside book is short and interesting
Prof. is very clear and fair when it comes to tests and quizzes. Goes beyond text book defintions to applicable examples. Ten page term paper for class but she gives you over 2 monthes to complete it. Midterm and final study guides very helpful and direct. Gives you what you need to know, but you still have to learn it. Nice person and a good prof.
there is a huge paper on norm breaking in this class. very difficult. not hard to get a B, very hard to get an A. professor shows a lot of propaganda videos in class, which are used for the tests, so make sure you watch allll of them. gives all the test questions in advance. essay exams. is fairly understanding. you will learn a lot.
Prof. Kiburi is helpful, clear, and willing to gives students everything they need to do well in the class. Her office hours are helpful, and so were her ta's. Good GE to take; a little work, but interesting.
Very good class, talks about race relations a fair amount.
Overall, she was a really nice teacher, fun actually to listen to, but a lot of her lectures made it hard to find where they were coming from- she didn't seem to make any connections, if any, they were abstract. She did care imensely for the students and was interesting and fun, though. Know the class material and you will be fine.
she's really into her material, a really upfront woman. interesting reading, but her lectures can be confusing and she's so strict in the way she sets up her test essays...i don't like how there's barely any room for you to come up with your own ideas =/
I'm a republican and I'm not her biggest fan...this class is a liberals' heaven. If you listened to her lectures you would begin to think that everyone not named bill gates is on the brink of poverty and is highly disadvantaged. Karl Marx would love this professor.
she's okay, her lectures are interesting but useless for the test, she talks too much about things on the side. the lecture is suppose to be 130 but she spends like half an hour on irrelavant things.
I would NOT recommend this professor to anyone! She uses lecturing as a way to project her liberal setiments to anyone who will listen to her. Classtime is pointless, and I barely learned any sociology! Exams are 100% writing.
She's very enthusiastic about her work, and it shows. She encourages people to talk with her about what she's lecturing about, and her enthusiasm almost infects you. Unfortunately, the class still drags at two hours, but that's not entirely her fault.
Kiburi is really nice and encourages you to participate. She may seem a little intimidating at first, but she just wants you to learn. Make sure you watch most of the videos shown in class, but besides that lecture is pretty much pointless. The norm breaking paper is impossible to get an A on and takes a lot of time. Boring class, good prof.
Unclear teaching style. Lectures did not make sense and were not interesting. Poor transitions. Did not feel I learned enough, kind of a boring waste of time

Professor Kiburi is wonderful. The SOC dept. needs to give her an assistant professorship position already! Professor Kiburi speaks the truth and is very pro-student. Study guides were helpful. My only compliant is that Professor. Kiburi sometimes lectures too fast . Lastly, my TA (Raoul) was kinda hot, which made the learning process easier ;
Professor Kiburi is absolutely wonderful! she is an incredibly driven and intelligent free spirit. She loves what she speaks about and is funny too. She makes it fun to be in class. The class is pretty easy. Very simple format on exams. As long as you know the terms, you will do just fine.
Kiburi seems like she'd be really fun to talk to, but as a professor she's not ideal. Her lectures are all over the place, and she talks too fast most of the time. The class is very easy over all, the focus just seems to be very scattered. REading quizzes are easy; essay portions on the midterm and exam are fine but long.
She is a weird teacher...talks about her life and husband more than she teaches. I swear she had a new story about her husband everyday. like people wanted to know if her husband made her lunch...maybe he was preparing low fat lunch or something...Who wants to know if she told her son that the girl he picks need to eat tofu because thats all kiburi
I loved this class; she has such energy and brings life to her lectures. You will write a lot of notes and I highly recommend reading the books, but it's worth it! She sparked my interest in a Soc major and I just graduated with one. She is very knowledgable, bright, and lively...GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS! She's a great prof and friend. :)
Kiburi is one of the most passionate teachers I've had at Davis. Her gender class was EXCELLENT. Be prepared to step out of the box and your comfort zone. She challenges you to apply what you learn to the real world. Go to office hours. She is incredibly supportive and helpful if you ASK. She's had an amazing life and her wisdom is a bonus.
Places her beliefs in lectures and lowers the importance of other beliefs. Makes fun of Christianity in her own way and tries to give a lot of advice before class. Her notes are good and so are most of the videos that we watched in class. Puts a lot of importance in the project and term paper. Get help on writing papers if you're not good.
Dr. Kiburi is really nice and makes lecture interesting. Her exams all have study guides and she tells you what they will be on. Dont even bother with the book though she will give you 4 or 5 quizzes of which you can drop the lowest one. Your grade on essays totally depends on your TA. Very nice teacher, carees about her students alot.
OK class. Clear lectures, but a bit repetitive of the book. Lectures could be improved. It seemed as if memorization was the most important thing. Tying topics together and understanding them was important for the essays on the exams, but even then, if you memorize the terms it is not hard to connect them in the essays.
Dr. Kiburi is an incredibly nurturing prof who truly wants her students to succeed. Her enthusiasm for the material and supportive classroom environment encourages students to speak their mind and ultimately learn the material better than any other classroom. She is a wonderful teacher, and I feel really lucky to have taken classes with her. A+!
easy but confusing and unclear+++stay away and take it with someone else
lectures are all based on the book. She can get annoying because she talks too much which makes it harder to write all the long lecture notes she puts up. Also, shes always bragging about how shes pro-student,and helpful. shes kind of full of herself. I recommned getting a good, easy T.A because they are the ones grading everything.
Prof. Kiburi is one of the best professors I have ever had. She is extremely passionate about what she teaches and she genuinely wants all of her students to succeed. You have to work for your grade but she is fair. I have had the pleasure of taking her classes twice and I hope I am able to take her again before I graduate.
Excellent professor, the best I have had at UCD. She is extremely passionate, knowledgable, and pro-student. Because of her, I have decided to major in Soc. Her assignments are challenging, but only in that they make you think critically. It seems like some people on this site don't want to think at all. Take her class!!!!!
Dr. Kiburi was very interesting and for the most part good. Her tests are simple for the most part. Make sure you read the book and take very detailed notes because her quizes can be on the most random details from the assigned reading.
if you are good at memorizing then you will do good she gives study guides before exams videos are very important to watch, this is where the essay questions come from. She knows her stuff
The last entry is ignorant of what "academic" means. Prof. Kiburi is very theoretical and theory application is the highest form of academic endeavor. She's great! Listen to the positive reviews and take her class!
Prof Kiburi is one of the best! Lively lectures & discussions, funny, relates topics to real life, very pro-student, makes you WANT to go to class. Not an easy A, always watch videos! Essay & MC tests & fun research project, gives review sheets & sessions for tests, so you know what she wants! A must take! You get what you put into this class.
Prof. Kiburi is one of the most passionate prof.i've had at ucd.She knows her stuff but is always open to new material.Having been a student at ucd herself, she's aware of what it is like to be a student & She's very fair and she does all she can to help her students.I recommend her to other students and i'd take more classes w/her in the future.
Great Professor. Take her if you can.
Great Professor. Take her if you can.
kiburi is clearly passionate about what she teaches but she can be rather unclear in lectures and goes off on wierd tangents. She also bothered me bc she often teaches her (sometimes offensive) opinions. She seemed to talk alot about race relations and it felt like she sort of would talk down about middle class white people.
Professor Kiburi is one of the most passionate professors I've ever encountered. Don't expect to get an easy A because Kiburi expects you to really LEARN and gain something out of her classes. In addition to her brilliance, she's a very caring and understanding professor. She genuinely cares about the well being of her students. Show her some love!
passionate about what she's teaching and funny (at times). Her tests are straightfoward because everything on the test is given to you in a study guide. Make sure you pay attention to all the videos she shows. There is a 10 page paper to write, but its not too bad.The only thing I didn't like was how she tends to go way off topic during lecture.
Extremely passionate, opinionated but very open to other's opinions as well. Encourages input from class and shows alternative views. Videos are extremely interesting and important for the midterm and final. Pay attention to the info she gives when she speaks on a tangent- it's likely to show up on the study guide for the test.
Very passionate teacher but extremely biased. I'm liberal but found I couldn't stand lectures because there was such a huge liberal overtone. The classroom is not the place to project political views.
she comes off as nice and helpful, but really doesnt do much to support those claims
I agree with those who say she is totally confusing her lectures are so fast it's hard to copy her slides and listen to her comments at the same time. Is a nice person but sucks at teaching i got more help from my TA than her. She is so picky about her title i once on accident called her ms.OMG she practically chewed me out for that I say stay away
Great class, pretty good teacher. She plays favorites and she will lash out on you if you disrespect her. She gives you everything you need for the exams- tons of memorizing. Same for the research paper- lays it out for you. I liked the class overall- got an A-
Entertaining lecturer! Her exams are essay format, and she gives you the prompt ahead of time, so memorize what you're going to write to avoid problems with time. TA's grade everything so write what they want you to! Soc is a fun subject, so keep an open mind.
Dr. Kiburi's pedagogy is supreme. Her class is difficult but doable, synoptic in nature. I learned many concepts and connections. As for those who have problem with her Liberal bias, I suppose it is difficult to go your whole life learning the compulsory conservative point of view only to meet Dr. Kiburi who challenges those deep seated biases. =)
So many vocabs to learn! Lectures are disorganized, quizes and midterms are hard!
She's obviously passionate about the subject, but she is really sensitive to disrespect and will call you out in class for ridiculous things. She considers being corrected a form of disrespect. She acts like she's open to everyone's opinion, but when someone disagreed with her on something, she tore into them until the person cried in class.
the class topic: race relations is interesting, she could have taught it differently. honestly didn't learn anything new from her class. thank goodness for a good TA (tim).
Kiburi often went on tangents and was biased, to the point where it would at times detract from her lectures. Some of the info provided seemed pointless- it was common sense and not imperative to the course. She appears to make up her own words, which bothered me because it sounds silly. Tests are challenging but just require effort to do well.
Dr. Kiburi is a great professor. She taught race relations as best she could for such a controversial topic. As far as putting down middle class whites, she doesn?t. She simply instructs students on the reality that is washed over in mainstream society. If that makes anyone feel bad, that is on them. Class was challenging but doable if you study!
Interesting subject matter. Tons to learn but well worth the effort. Tests are long so write your essay in advance so you know what you are going to say. And learn the theories, they will make or break your grade.
Now she is very nice and wants people to participate but her lectures all over the place. She talks way to fast and expects you to know the terms. She put concepts on midterm that SHE did not even discuss. She comes off to me as one of those professor who likes to show off how well they know their subject but does not do well with teaching it.AVOID
Lectures were really unorganized and information was copied from the textbook verbatim. She was a really biased professor and her tests contained more information than was taught. It was almost impossible to finish the tests in the allotted time. I don't recommend taking if you expect an A.
Do not take this class if you think it is going to be an easy A. Her midterm was so unfair. She put on terms that she never went over. Very hard. She is also very moody. One day she is talking about how she is so happy and how her husband loves her, blah blah blah, the next day she is snapping at the class. Avoid her. She should not teach
Kiburi was a pretty cool teacher. The class was extremely easy. Just attend lecture, take notes (it's really not that hard), and go through the book. She gives you a review sheet for tests and the T.A's are very helpful too. She shows movies in class that appear on her midterms and finals, so make sure you go watch them. Overall, fun and easy class
It's like a repeat of her Race Relation Class.
Maybe we all wouldn't be struggling to copy down lecture notes at lightning speed if she actually came into class on time. However, lecture=textbook's words. Some key terms she wants us to use on the midterm and final are ones she doesn't really go into in lecture. Average grade for MT was a 79%. I DO NOT recommend her for Social Stratification.
Interracial Dynamics - biased professor, plays favorites. There was material on the midterm that she never went over in class. Not very organized. The actual course material was pretty interesting - take the class with a different professor.
Dr. Kiburi is an outstanding professor! The lectures were full of interesting and informative material. I looked forward to going to class everyday. She really seemed to care about us students. The best professor I have ever had at UC Davis. I learned a lot. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! It will be one of the best classes you ever take.
class is really unstructured. do not recommend.
I took Dr. Kiburi for Soc of the Family and Race Relations, and absolutely loved her class. She is a strong and extremely intelligent woman, and very open minded when it comes to the views of her students. The way she structures her class enables her students to do well if they try hard (you get an outline before each exam, plus she does midterm/
(continued from below) final review sessions. Great discussions, creative opportunities in projects, and a really pro-student teacher. DEFINITELY take her if you have the chance, she is a very special professor. And go to office hours!
Dr. Kiburi is the best professor I have ever had at UC Davis! She is extremely intelligent, thoughtful and caring. The class ignited my true passion for sociology. She was also very helpful, accessible and warm during office hours. I really feel she cares about her students. Make sure you take this class!
Dr. Kiburi was by far the best professor I had at UC Davis. She was always available to her students for office hours and meetings, and she truly loves what she does. She also teaches with very open, unbiased views and is respectful of everyone's opinions. She is very understanding and encourages her students to become engaged in the class.
Dr. Kiburi is great. She made her expectations very clear throughout the course. There are no surprises or unexpected items on exams, go to office hours for extra help she is always welcoming. Theres a good amount of reading and writing for this class (this is upper division Soc, it should be expected) but it is all relevant and pretty interesting.
Dr. Kiburi is one of my favorite professors at UC Davis. The class was lots fun because Dr. Kiburi incouraged participation. She is also a very talented professor and very helpful. I incourage everyone to take her class.
Dr. Kiburi is the bomb! I will take her for as many classes I can and I recommend anyone else to do the same! She is very informed and welcomes differing viewpoints. I really think she is the best professor I have ever had at the college level. In a university setting that is extremely cut-throat and competitive, she makes it more tolerable.
nice lady but cant teach. she plays favorite, hence the good reviews.u need to write everything she says in lectures or u will regret when it comes to exams, becuz 50terms in studyguide and most are hard to find+ random. one paper10pgs,midterm/final bluebook(ids+essay). i dont recommend the class, unless u know u can suck up to her.
Professor Kiburi is the best professor that I've had at UC Davis. I've taken other classes from her in the past, but this one was by far the most interesting and enlightening class. She is a very intelligent woman and it is evident in her teaching style--she is challenging, but work hard and it is so REWARDING! What you learn will help you in life
It's a life changing class! Very interesting, prepare 2 read a lot of interesting articles abt the history & theories abt AA. 1 mid+1 research pp+1 final. The studyguides R long, but if u took good notes & study with other ppl, u'll have no problem. GO 2 HER OFFICE HOURS, she answers anything within and outside of class! She'll do her best 2 help u
This was definitely a difficult class. However, it was really worth all of the hard work. What's most rewarding in this class is not the grade you receive at the end, but the amount of valuable information you really gain. If you want an easy A, don't take this class. If you want a challenge and to actually learn something, then take Dr. Kiburi
She's enthusiastic & up to date with current events, which she uses often as examples to aid in her teaching. I've come to close contact with Professor Kiburi before & she's been one of the most understanding and compassionate human beings I've ever met. Overall a great teacher & a wonderful person. If you attend class, you will learn a great deal!
She is great! She really cares about her students and her job. Take her, I really loved her and her class. Shes not closed minded like many other sociology professors and shes really fun
She is terrible. Her tests are way too hard and she doesn't test you on any important information. She talks a lot in class about these abstract things and then we watched movies and we had our whole midterm on that! There was nothing from the book and no real Social Psychology information presented or on the test! I HATE THIS CLASS
I really can't tell you how much I enjoyed the two classes I had with Dr. Kiburi. She is not all about theory, but actually teaches things I found useful in life. Readings were very interesting, discussions were relevant and exciting, and midterms had no surprises. I changed my major because of her, shes great. HIGHLY recommended!
Class is engaging, cares about students, lectures are interesting, although she goes a bit fast with powerpoint. Bring a laptop to take notes. Good professor, but if you want to get an easy A, take another class.
Professor Kiburi was extremely nice. However, I completely disagreed with her teaching styles. Oftentimes, she would go off into strange political tangents that were irrelevant to what we were learning. She clearly favored the students who sucked up to her. I honestly thought this was one of the worst classes I've ever taken.
Dr. Kiburi is a challenging professor, but she challenges her students to make sure they get a quality educational experience. I'm not paying all this money for a UC education just to hear about things I already know! She is warm, funny, brilliant, and has a great understanding of the material. I became a Sociology major because of her .
this class is easier than her 129. tworeaction papers, bluebook midterm (ids+essay),takehome final. i like how this class, she tries not to forget any groups, especially minorities.her prompt can be overwhelmed with too many requirements to use terms and soc theories.teach students to know how to apply soc theories in life.should go to every lecture
This was an amazing class because of the instructor and the diverse makeup of the students. We shared alot about ourselves and had fun - you need to read and study but Dr K gives you study guides and help. She tells you the truth and actually cares about her students - they love her. Check this class out, it was never boring.
Dr Kiburi is very engaging, interactive and cares about all her students. She takes the time to get to know each student both in class and during her office hours.Students enjoy her; material covered in class can be challenging at times but she makes it fun& relatable. Clear guidelines given with all assignmnts, exams. Never any surprises.Gr8t class
Dr. Kiburi provides detailed instruction on applying theory, critical analysis, building personal pedagogy and requires students to respect each other and the subject matter and contribute to the academic community. She models academic excellence and expects the same from students. Kiburi is a FEARLESS advocate for students and VERY approachable.
The best teacher I have ever had. If you get an opportunity to learn from and with Prof Kiburi, congrats, because you have an opportunity to create a relationship with a professor during your college years that you will cherish for a long time after you graduate.
I have taken two classes with her and she is amazing. As part of her public pedagogy, she relates challenging abstract theories to students' lives. I have met and continue to meet fascinating people through her classes; close friends and probably future colleagues. People flock to her like Aristotle, and she literally changes students' lives.
I liked Kiburi's class because it was challenging, but also engaging. The tangents that people here are referring to are actually useful because she is basically giving you examples of what she expects in an essay. The topic she teaches is obviously not easy for some to stomach, but the way she instructs allow people from all ethnicities to relate
if you had her before,i suggest you to keep all those notes/id definitions from that class, very likely she will use the same terms again.so write everything she says, even if it sounds not related to article/class because it will be on tests/papers! i suggest going to her office hours a lot or u will not find the definitions online
Overall, if you work hard in this class it is possible to get an A. Chris, my TA, was amazing and even burned everyone in her sections a CD based on what we said our favorite music was on the first day. There is a 10 page paper but it really isn't that bad- its actually really easy to write once you get going. Pretty good class overall.
Professor Kiburi is great! Not only is she extremely knowledgeable in the world of sociology but she is also open to new information and different points of view. I highly suggest taking her class ? especially if you want an in-depth look into sociological theory that is also completely relevant for us all in our daily lives! Thanks!
PS - That was meant to be a ! not a ? There is no question about taking Professor Kiburi's classes. She rocks!
Kiburi is a very eccentric character. Lectures are interesting but they're just based off the reading so attendance isn't a must but it's more fun that way. She can be kinda of spacy and incoherent with her points sometimes. The final project is fun!
I took 3 classes with her and she is great. I like her because she has an eccentric personality that is not for everyone. Her class is extremely theoretical so beware. She creates an open discussion class environment that students tend to love. However, after the first midterm, people realize that its more than just storytime and its actual theory.
This teacher sucks. At first I thought she was nice and cool. She grades so hard for a lower division class. She expects way to much from her students. She is also the laziest teacher I have every met in my life. She doesnt give you the power pointsor upload them, instead she makes you go to the TA's office hours to pick up the power points.
This teacher sucks. She gave us a 7 page final and she gave the prompt 4 days before it was due. WE HAVE OTHER FINALS TO STUDY FOR!!!
I had her last year. Unprofessionally late and disorganized. Sitting through her class was painful. I refuse to take any other soc classes with her.
This professor is insane--I had to drop her class. I don't think I have ever had such a narcissistic instructor. She really thinks she is all that and I have no idea why. Her lectures are all over the place, and she talks about her husband and family more than anything. I was warned by a friend not to take the class. Wish I had listened!
Prof Kiburi is outstanding and highly intelligent. An advocate for all students. She brings out the best scholarship and underscores the need for theory and critical thinking. I love her! Take any class she teaches.
When I had first taken Prof. Kiburi's class, I was new to the field of Sociology. She teaches students to write critically and analytically. Her classes prepared me for graduate school where students must be able to apply theory to research. I found the classes challenging. In her class, you have to study, write, and I welcomed the dialogue.
All the negative evaluations on this page are written by students and the positive evaluations are written by herself. "Teaches students how to think critically and analytically" by talking about her husband all over the time? She copies her syllabus here but does not reach her goals.
I'm currently taking my third class from Professor Kiburi, and I know from networking with other students that the positive remarks made on this site are made by her devoted students. We know that she is well respected and consistently earns awards for her excellence in teaching.
I just finished my first course with her and she is absolutely amazing! As a new sociology major she definitely shows you what you are getting into. Prof Kiburi knows her stuff and wants her students to know it too, not just repeat it and agree because she's the professor. Two thumbs up! Can't wait to take more classes with her
Professor Kiburi is my favorite SOC instructor at UCD! She is very personable in her teaching style which I enjoy, but I understand it doesn't always work for students looking for rigid clear instruction. She outlines her expectations, defines and focuses a lot on theory, and if you participate in class and do your homework you will pass with ease.
I see both sides of what people are saying. She does have a HUGE personality, so my advice is to take one of her classes and find out for yourself if you can handle it. She started to bug me after a while. Also, she expects a whole lot out of a lower division class. She expects you to know how to write with theory and I'm just a freshman :(
I am freshman too. Loved the class, liked her, and learned a lot. She set us up well for future classes here at UCD.
Kiburi is not a good teacher. She is always late to class, talks about her husband all over the time and sticks to a simple textbooks (when she is not addressing her husband).
I took this course last quarter, and while the course work was very challenging, Professor Kiburi was very helpful in explaining every component. She is very pro-student and is always willing to help her students. She is very personal and compassionate. I've had her before and am always trying to take a course with her again. I learned so much!
I've already graduated, but looking back my favorite classes were those i took with Prof Kiburi!! She really knows how to teach so that everything is actually interesting!
Prior to taking this course, The African-American (Black) Experience in America, I thought I knew everything there was to know about the contributions of African Americans. Boy, was I wrong! Professor Kiburi is compassionate, passionate and extremely informative. Her love for the discipline is truly transparent and imparted on her students.
Dr. Kiburi's courses are very challenging and requires a lot of critical thinking & theoretical analysis. Her courses aren't one that you can excel in without hard work. I took 3 courses with her and learned more than any other courses I have ever taken. She is always willing to go out of her way to help you understand the material. I recommend her
this class is just based on simple materials you are asked to learn by heart. it does not stimulate critical thinking. take it with someone else.
I am such a follower of Prof Kiburi that I took both courses she taught winter quarter. She didn't teach Soc 1 and she is an amazing educator that stimulates critical thinking at its highest. Take her.
Her frequent rants on her personal life and views became a bit too much at times. I really disliked how she was unorganized (don't expect to follow the syllabus) - changing due dates, assignments, readings. It felt all over the place. Also, don't expect her to help you through email- she just gives you attitude.
Professor Kiburi definitely has her favorite students makes it obvious to the rest of the class. She is very uninteresting, with her exams mainly based on films we watch, even though for the most part of the course we do readings. The films are barely applicable. The course is definitely interesting, but don't take it with Professor Kiburi.
Prof. Kiburi is ne of the most pro-students professors I've ever had. She teaches in a very interesting, clear theoretical style. I feel this class was life changing and I'm glad I took it. Take her!
Had no previous knowledge regarding Prof Kiburi, and was happy to find her amazingly engaging and one of the best at teaching and supporting students. She is unique and devoted to making her courses interesting and highly informative. She's a must take!
Great class. Kiburi teaches students to value critical thinking and theoretical analysis.
There's a course reader ($30) and a book. Her lectures are really interesting and you actually tend to pay attention. However, her papers/midterms are more "follow the directions" than graded for your thought process. Maybe that's just the TA, but Kiburi is awesome (:
This class is easy but you will learn nothing new. Her teaching is average.
I do not recommend this class!
Kiburi is one of the best professors I've experienced here at UCD. The course presents a unique experience in critical thinking and personal insights.
Class and professor is great. I've learned so much. Bayo, the reader is incompetent and rude. The professor has had to work at damage control to be fair to us students, and we appreciate her efforts. Take this class. Kiburi is excellent!
I took this thinking it was an easy A however it wasnt... I got a C+ after working hard. I really did not like the way the TA's graded the papers and I hated her guidelines for the papers. However she is a great lecturer is very passionate about the topics we covered. However I wouldn't take it again just because it ruined my GPA.
Professor Kiburi is excellent! Very easy and interesting course. She definitely loves her students and will always work with them to obtain a higher grade. Take to increase GPA ASAP! A+
Absolutely love this professor. Utilize her office hours and always ask her questions. She will definitely be there to help you if you're struggling in the class. I did well, but I had to work really hard for the grade and always went to her OH. Very passionate lecturer and empowers young women!
I loved this professor, she really cares about her students and is always available to help. The only thing I did not like was how hard they graded on the papers. Personally, I would not take this class if I knew how hard they graded beforehand. I got a B in the class.
An amazing professor. Kiburi gives informative, lively, inspirational lectures. She is sincere in her desire to promote the value of multiculturalism. I worked hard (B+)and learned a lot.
Her teaching style is straight up indoctrinating. Way too much work for 3 units. Changes the prompt and deadlines on you last minute (changed the prompt 48 hours before our midterm [30% of our grade] was due). She claims to promote ideas and opinions, but leaves no opportunity to discuss opposing thoughts and theories. She is VERY narrow-minded.
OMG! Dr. Kiburi is exceptional and one of the best professors at UCD. This class will change your life. . Exams encouraged students to express their diverse views. The midterm "changes" were "clarifications" focussed on helping all students. And the negative attitude on grading, confusion, and inflexibility came from Amara Miller--the TA.
Her teaching is anything but good. Her frequent rants on her personal life and views became a bit too much at times.
Class was amazing and lectures very interesting! Prof. Kiburi is very pro-student and passionate about multiculturalism. Along with sociological theory, the life skills you learn are invaluable. Don't skip this class with her!
The lectures are meh . . . she kinds of repeating what she said every lecture. only 2 assignments in the class (papers). The TA graded way too harsh on them.
Course material is very interesting and relevant to everyday life. Prof. Kiburi gives lively, interactive lectures with great class participation. Assignments can be challenging but doable. Just be sure to follow the prompt closely. I go to her office hours and I love the class!
Great course, great professor. Many of us have expressed during our dialog discussion group how fortunate we are to have taken this class. Highly recommend.
The professor does not clarify what is required in the class. The grading is arbitrary and there is no rubric. The professor and the teaching assistant do not communicate to formulate the same grading criteria. The class goal is meaningful and powerful, but the way the course is taught,I would not recommended!
this class honestly changed the way I viewed things! I loved the material but the final paper was difficult. Midterm paper was very easy and I actually looked forward to class. I recommend going to office hours for thorough explanation of what is expected on papers.
The class material is good but Kiburi talks in circles around the same things that it becomes repetitive and boring. Dialogue groups are good, the TA is helpful. Way too much reading for 3 units. Assignments are extremely confusing, making the class a lot more stressful than it should be. I would not recommend taking her class.
I took both this course and the Soc30A honors course. Kiburi is one of the best professors I've had at UCD. Although challenging, the course requires you to use personal experiences from your life. And I noticed that she only uses examples with permission and without any names. I liked the course material and the passionate way she lectures.
My favorite professor at UC Davis. I'm not one to go to office hours, but even when I am not taking a class from her I go just to talk and learn from her. She inspired my passion in sociology, and I cannot recommend her highly enough.
I tried so hard to like this class because of how much she cares for her students. However this was the hardest GE. 10 pg. research paper and 10 pg. midterm paper. Also the class is graded in a way that only so many can actually receive an A, so it is really hard to get an A. She cares so much about her students, but its not worth the work required
Class has a lot of work, but getting an A grade is manageable. Professor is very clear and interesting. If you go to office hours and get your papers revised by many people, midterms and final will be very simple. Also want to highlight, no pop quizzes and ALL midterms and finals are take home writing assignments.
This class was ridiculous and I learned nothing. Religious beliefs do not count as sociological theory. I felt like I was in the audience of a daytime tv talkshow, not a university classroom.
One of my favorite professors at UCD. Kiburi gives extremely interesting lectures and offers many unusual events in the course. I worked hard, earned an A. The norm-breaker assignment is 7-10 pages and the midterm and final are 5-7 pages. This class will alter your understanding of our social world. A must take.
She is an insightful professor and values student input. It's easy to get a B or A-, but more difficult to get an A, because the department has a grading quota. The prompts for the essays can be convoluted, but they are fun topics. Some of her lectures were more interesting than others; her lecture on transgenderism was inaccurate.
I despised this course with a passion. Essay prompts were confusing, TA's aren't very lenient grading the papers. Classes were long and topics were random, did not see how the material connected. Attendance to both lecture and discussion is mandatory, she passes around a roll sheet. Advice, take Intro to Soc at a community college.
Going to lecture is pretty much useless. The papers had no clear grading criteria and they make you connect terms that don't even relate to each other. I hated this class with a passion because I would spent days on these papers and still ended up with Cs on them because my TA graded them harshly. The TAs are not even helpful either.
Kiburi is excellent! Insightful, caring, creative. I loved this class and was eager to go to lectures. She also offered interesting guest presenters who provided unique sociological perspectives. I will take more of Kiburi's classes.
She is a nice woman, but she does not do a very good job of presenting the material in a clear way. Everything she talks about seems so vague and repetitive. You will have a very hard time in this class because you will have to learn the material on your won if you want to understand the sociological concepts.
Professor Kiburi has an amazing teaching style. She is upbeat and passionate about sociology and how it can help students understand both their academic and personal lives. I looked forward to her lectures as I learned sociological theories and concepts. I especially liked the way she uses contemporary examples to explain social interactions.
This was the worst GE I've ever taken at UC Davis. She's so unclear, vague, repetitive, and more. I felt like I learned nothing. Mandatory attendance. Pretty sure it's easy to get a B though.
I would take any class this that Professor Kiburi thought!
Prof. Kiburi knows sociology and her students. She is passionate about social justice and helping students understand the course materials. I especially appreciate her unique lecturing style and the way she relates to music and current events. Dialog group is mandatory,
AMAZING lecturer, but not a good teacher. 1 midterm, 2 papers (one for final), 1 group presentation. Eye-opening to social justice issues. Very linear, only teaches her opinion as "the truth." Ironic bc she encourages multiple perspectives, but only teachers her's. Overall, very interesting material. Easy class if you go. TA grades really harshly.
She was a spunky teacher that made me laugh at first, but over the quarter I felt like she was very one-sided on most issues and didn't teach from many angles. Very unclear about what she wants in essays, & not at all helpful when you emailask questions, then graded very harshly on essays and participation. For a 3 unit class, it's a lot of work!
she is inspirational. the class will change your sociological perspectives. But it is not a easy class, 3 papers (1 for midterm, 1research paper 6-8 pages, and one take home final) Too much writing but writing GE is not provided. can be confusing sometimes, did not explain some concepts well. Be careful, if you have to take it, put some effort .
Prof. Kiburi is my favorite prof. here at UCD. Her style of teaching is fair from a social justice perspective. And she has a transformative style of lecturing containing clear sociological terms. Requirements are: midterm (mostly multiple-choice), two short papers, and one group presentation. Take her for an exceptional quarter. Loved her!
was a fantastic instructor! i am trying to find more classes that have her as the professor teaching them! she inspired me in so many ways. A great leader for her students!
Although she is a very passionate professor, I sometimes felt that the sociological concepts we learned about had too much of her own opinion in it, making me dislike the class. However, it doesn't really matter because the TAs grade your papers, so make sure you have a good TA!
Prof is super unorganized, but enthusiastic. For example, files for the 10 page paper were all over random folders in smartsite; once I had collected them all, I found the resources confusing yet repetitive. Final is a take-home paper. She only uses the textbook for 2 quizzes. Didn't learn much. Definitely way better/easier GEs you could take.
I loved this class!!! I usually don't go to lectures, but I didn't miss one of Prof. Kiburi's amazing lectures. I find her style engaging and authentic. She always tells her students when she shares subjective opinions. Kiburi is helpful during office hours and lectures because she cares about her students.
Dr. Kiburi was amazing and she inspired me a lot during my time in Davis. I really appreciate how she is always trying to help people and shows interests to all students.
Ok guys, Kiburi is the real deal. I am enrolled in another of her classes next quarter. Take her! Reading and using the text is essential because you use it for: 2 quizzes, midterm IDs and essay, research paper analysis, and the final. Prof. Kiburi is clear, funny, dedicated and knows her stuff. I learned so much.
Professor Kiburi is a hilarious and inspirational professor. However, as the course goes by you realize how one-sided she is and most of her lectures are about racism rather than sociological theories. There are also a few long papers to write, however the prompt for the papers are very unorganized and unclear.
I have taken many of Dr. Kiburi's classes; she is a true professional in her field, who takes theory and applies it to real life in a meaningful way. Soc 128 was a transformational class for bringing to light issues that plague our society and can be difficult to confront. She has high expectations, and is available outside of class to meet.
Kabuki is a great lecturer, and covers a variety of topics with great enthusiasm and knowledge. However, the structure of the class was vague and often times, confusing. Many of the essay prompts I received had either extremely vague and often conflicting criteria. Groups were very large for project (mine had 11 people).
Professor Kiburi is just amazing! Her lectures are full of sociological importance and relate to students' real lives. She is very passionate and truly cares for her students. I found that the dialog group work and presentations worked well with a larger number of people. The class was transformational. Take her any time you can. I loved her!
It certainly is an easy class. Just read the reading materials and you are fine. However, I do not understand why this instructor does not publish anything. She does not have a single publication. Why aren't certain professors required to publish at all? Research informs teaching and vice versa!
Professor Kiburi is one of the very best at UCD. Her lectures are so informational, intelligent, and essential. Although she does international research, her role at Davis does not require her to publish. Teaching is her expertise and her passion. You will not be bored by a professor who publishes consistently--and can not teach! Take her.
I took this class thinking it would be focused on the self and society. Instead, I got a women's studies class which I did not want to take. Sometimes her class can be interesting with videos and a fun research project breaking norms but lectures are dull and repetitive.
Prof. Kiburi is outstanding in knowledge of the ways that the self interacts with society. I have found her approach to be interesting and focused on how students can learn to use the course information to understand and improve their lives. Lectures are interactive, lively, and well appreciated by her students. You will not regret taking her.
Highly recommend her classes! She is every approachable and always gives valuable lectures.
Professor Kiburi is really funny and she really tries to talk about recent stuff to make things more applicable to students. I just feel that her lectures were somewhat disorganized and a little bit unclear. Read the book to do well for the quizzes (it's almost verbatim). The paper is graded by your TA so go to their office hours.
Spring '16. Required reading and really short quizzes on it. She tries to make the content applicable to modern society which I found interesting (and helped me stay awake in lecture). She is truly an inspiring person, but her lectures are not too organized. Her final project/paper was fun and not too long. I would say moderately easy GE.
Dr. Kiburi is such a great person! I loved going to her lectures because they were interesting and she related the course content back to our modern lives. The lectures did tend to be unorganized so it was hard to keep up and write things down. Essays are graded by TAs, so make sure you are clear of what they are looking for
Prof. Kiburi is outstanding in her knowledge and connection to her students. Under her guidance, I found Soc 2 last quarter to be the best class I have taken here at Davis. The theories and concepts I leaned in Self and Society will help me continually understand myself and others. You must experience Kiburi!
A 4.0 Psych major I thought Soc2 would be a fun different perspective. It's not. Class is incredibly unorganized. Need to read the book for section but the exam uses her own weird definitions. Got a C on the first midterm. Spreads her liberal ideology and gets facts wrong constantly. There's a 10 page paper, 2 novels, textbook, quizzes, documentary
I am always aware of Professor Kiburi's intent to encourage critical thinking within a theoretical frame for her students. Her lectures are amazing, engaging and right on point. Take her!
My experience makes Professor Kiburi and Soc 2 the best professor and university class I have ever taken. You do have to work, but I have never been prouder to earn an "A". Her lectures are inspirational and full of narratives that make social psychology very understandable in your everyday life. Soc 2 is an exceptional course under Kiburi!
This class was not well taught. However, to be fair it was a very easy class and an easy A.
My experience with Prof. Kiburi has been outstanding. Not only is she clear and provides unusual examples to understand the theories and concepts in social psychology, but she provides well organized PowerPoint slides for each lecture. I am totally engaged in this course and look forward to each interactive class.
If you don't read every single word of the textbook twice, don't expect to do well. Tests are heavy and detailed. Lectures can be "inspiring" but aren't helpful in supporting the information you're expected to know--sometimes they aren't related. A midterm, 2 quizzes, a research project/paper (8-10 pgs), take home final.
Dr. Kiburi is honestly the most passionate professor I've met. I did not expect this class to more difficult than I thought, but it's super interesting. Her lectures apply to her life as well, and the example she uses for her lecture are super interesting. Exams are a bit hard. Don't mess up on the quizzes (2) they bring your grade down a lot
Kiburi is a most exceptional professor. Her passion and caring regarding her students is obvious. This is the first class I've taken at Davis that is focused on theory, and I loved it. Exams are clear with study guides, and review sessions. Additionally, the norm-breaking research is both challenging and fun. I loved this class, so take her!
Kiburi makes learning social psychology fascinating! Take her.
Kiburi is by far one of the best professors at UC Davis. She is an amazing, caring and inspirational professor. Yes there is A LOT of reading to be done for her class but in the end it is all worth it. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS, I went to her office hours 95% of the time & learned so much from her. She cares a lot about her student's wellbeing.
Professor Kiburi is so approachable. The class was super interesting too, so it isn't hard to learn the material. The problem I had with this class is that it was unorganized and it was more difficult than it needed to be finding out what assignments were asking us to do or what we needed to know. Overall not a bad class, but not an easy A.
Dr. Kiburi is a gem. She is very passionate about social psychology and its use in everyday life. Theory is highly emphasized. There is a fair amount of reading, but the books relate to the lives of us students. Exams are fair and I loved the take-home final that allowed students to write about their experiences of "hook-up culture ".
The prof is okay, but the grading is way too strict. Your grades can hardly alter even if you argue with the TA and prof.
Professor Kiburi is a very pro-student educator. She is invested in teaching students to be comfortable with theory and dedicated to critical thinking. This class on multiculturalism is informative, inspirational, and very needed. Kiburi's grading policy is clear and fair if you follow all instructions. Highly recommend this unique class.
Attend lecture and pay attention. Her lectures are very straightforward and slides are uploaded onto canvas. Tests are multiple choice and short answer. One group project at the end of the quarter. Pretty easy class, I hardly ever studied or read the material but still passed with a B+.
She was a great professor, there was a lot of reading, but I didn't read and still passed. Her midterms and finals were specific though.
She does not tie in the required readings to the lecture material. She's very focused on her own beliefs. Quarter is almost over and she has not discussed two of the three required books. She doesn't connect the material we've read to what she's teaching. Doesn't give much more information than what's found on her lecture slides.
Dr. Kiburi is one of my favorite professors here at Davis. I look forward to taking more of her classes in the future. Her exams are creative, and she is very clear about what will be required. The readings are interesting and inspirational.
Prof. Kiburi tends to ramble. As a student that doesn't study social psychology as a major I found this class to be very difficult. There's a 7-page research paper assigned (exactly like SOC 01) and the final is a take-home two essays with unclear prompts that even the TA's are confused about. The material isn't hard, the class is. :
Kiburi is a rare gem of a professor. The midterm was challenging, but the final is so easy and creative. I often do not go to lectures, but I really enjoyed attending class and appreciating course content. She really does teach you how to apply social psychology to your everyday life. I loved my experience.
Kiburi is by far one of the best professors at UC Davis. She is absolutely caring of all her students and really wants you to succeed in her class. Lectures can be a bit heavy but overall you learn a lot from her class. TAKE IT!
Kiburi is obviously passionate about her work and that's respectable. However her lectures often go into tangents. You're never sure if she is discussing actual coursework or going off on a story. The TA is a tough grader for the essays and is unwilling to change your grade and is not very helpful overall. Interesting class, bad execution.
Professor Kiburi is as dedicated and learned as you will find at any university. I appreciate an educator who mixes facts, concepts and theories together with examples and narratives. Take her and enjoy a special learning experience.
I thought the class was very interesting, but Dr. Kiburi did not provide real lectures. She only posted slides and a document explaining the slides. This was really disappointing and made it harder to engage with the class. Pretty easy class though, and Kiburi is accessible by email.
Professor Kiburi is learned and creative.
Creative, caring, innovative, and very concerned with the safety of all her students. I loved the unique quality of this class. Take her!
