She is very nice and easy. If you need help, she will help you before class, and her test are easy. If you can't understand her in class, just talk to her before class or do the required chem CD. I never really got chem in high school but I do now.
When I first took Oates, I didn't really like her. But compared to other Chemistry professors, she is awesome! She gives you ALL of her notes, she drops your lowest grade and she helps out. Show up for the review and you'll make an A on the test.
All her lecture notes are available at the library for copy. She is kind of hard to understand with her soft spoken accent voice, but as long as you have the notes it easy to follow along what she is going over in class. Also, old test are in the library.
sit in the VERY front or you won't hear a thing. Class was a rediculous waste, i dropped along with about 75% of the rest of the class. Take someone else!!!
Terrible accent. Nearly impossible to comprehend her. She's frustratingly picky and strict. But she tries hard to make you understand. There's a lot of handouts and examples. But that's not enough. A lot of people will drop out. Save your money.
Heavy accent, speaks in monotone & says "ok?" at the end of most if not all sentences. Too many transparencies, doesn't appear to be computer literate. Would drop her class, but need it & it was the last available. Nice person, but don't re
she is an awsome teacher.if you do your part of the work it is very easy to get an A.she is a brilliant lady, awsome persson
Spoke in monotone and has an attendance policy. Showed up dreading the classes and not computer literate, graded on a great curve.
Speaks softly and with an accent. The only thing you will understand is when she says "ok!" I didnt learn a thing from the lecture but you are required to attend anyway. The Chem Skill Builder was a life saver. All of her example problems ar
Agree with several of the posters on this site...drop her class as quickly as possible. Hopefully you found this site before you signed up for her class. Nice person, bad instructor.
horrible, gives no homework, boring lectures but tests are easy
Very nice person, but nice doesn't teach. Cannot understand (bad accent) She needs to be a scientist, not a professor
This woman was like forced to become a teacher. She doeasn't teach for the joy of teaching but just to ridicule and yell at the mistakes of her students. Then she tries to frighten you by threatening to take off points or even call security on you.
Can't understand, you will stay confused.
If you study & work hard in her class, you'll get an A. Although, she speaks low, she tries her best to make everyone understand the concept. She's an awesome teacher & her notes are excellent!
She made me cry!!! Would not answer questions in class when everyone obviously didnt get what she was talking about. Why teach if you dont want to answer questions??? DROP HER IF ITS NOT TOO LATE!
she is an awesome teacher. If u listen to her lecture and read her notes 1211 is just a piece of cake. even though he pretend to be strict about attendance and other thing she is really not. she is really cool. highly recommend.
(cont. from above)your allowed to bring 1 index card to each test and 4 index cards to the final. Gets a little paranoid if you take notes All in all, if your serious about this class she is a WONDERFUL teacher.
I took split smstr. w/ her. Does have an accent, very straight forward, could publish a chem 2 book w/ her great! notes(). Tests, for the most part, are very straight forward.1 page of homework per test. Strict attendance.(cont. below)
just do your homework, show up to class, pay attention, and copy her notes any you'll do just fine. i always over-studied for her tests...not as hard as i thought they'd be
Dr. Oates is a very good/easy chemistry Professor. She comes off strict in the beginning, but deep down inside she has a really big heart. Study, work on your chem skill builder and ask for help when needed and you will be guaranteed and a good grade.
Extremely miserable, shouts a lot and quite unhelpful. Gives a lot of fill in the blank questions. Her labs are aweful and she talks to you as if you are deaf in the lab. She teaches very fast and is always rushing.
Very hard to understand. I would not take her.
Hard to understand at first but not so bad once you get used to her. Her tests are pretty easy if you follow her reviews. I really enjoy her. She makes chemistry easy to understand.
Very understanding and nice. Content is not the easiet, but she does her best to make you understand.
Mrs Oates is one of the sweetest teacher in GPC. She made Chemistry easy for anyone. She gives review and extra credit on test. Organic Chem is not an easy subject but she made it a little easier for all of us. I highly recommend her!!!
Mrs.Oat stands as the worse teacher I have had. Throughout the entire class I was bored out of my mind. She seems like a nice person, but not a very good teacher. I found it pointless to even stay after class for help! P.S she counts people absent if you are over 5 minutes late. UGH!!
I didn't like her policy on absences. I was doing okay but by mid-point I had no choice but to drop, her accent is also hard to get around. Not a very motivating teacher.
excellent professor. made organic a breeze
She gets cranky sometimes, but she's really helpful when you ask the right question. Make sure you study and memorize you material when you ask this question. Just keep your head up, pay attention, and copy all the note that she is given. you will pass this class easily. Get help if you need to 'cuz the ISS people can help you understand.
This was my second time around in Org Chem after getting a C the first time. She is a good teacher, but I don't think I would be able to follow her if I had not already had the class before. Tests are clear and straight off review. She is nice.
Very hard to understand. Makes all the different equations and etc. sound more difficult. However, she gives out notes so you can understand the lecture. Just study these notes and you'll get an A. She also has take home assignments that are fairly easy and she has extra credit on her tests. OKAY FOLKS?
I think she is the easiest teacher for chemistry ever. She gets into detail on working out certain difficult problems. Her test are very easy and you must read the chapters and you will get an A.She does not like when phones ring in the class, and does not like interruption in the class.
She's AWESOME.....if you like to be yelled at, insulted, scared to ask questions. she expects you to know the material before you even step foot in her class...always says 'u should know this from high school'!! why would we be in the class if we already knew everything about the subject? YELLS ALOT! unhelpful! did i mention she yells alot!
Ms. Oates is a good teacher. Please note that Organic Chemistry is not an easy class. If you sign up for her class, study BEFORE each lecture. She drops one test grade and one homework grade. Want more than that?
I liked her teaching style. I thought her tests were easy too. All u really need to do is just pay attention to her wen she's lecturing and then do about 5 or so homework problem and u'll be fine. Also make sure u really study the review sheets she gives before each test.
Where to begin..I got by in her class only because I knew a lot about Chemistry already. Do not expect her to help you if you do not understand the material & do not expect her to be friendly. You'll do well only if you know what you're doing before you walk in there. Her lab is also a HUGE pain.TONS and TONS of extra work. VERY HARD for 1 credit
Speaks very low a& with a thick accent, so it is hard to understand her. Not very helpful or clear. Tests were very easy, though. Now that I have had the 2nd part with another professor, I realize that I didn't really learn anything from her class, so Org II was very difficult for me. Oh, & the annoying "OK folks" after every sentence gets old.
Thick accent, unorganized, but if u read the material u'll be o.k. ... i made an A, but i taught myself.
Terrible class!!! Terrible teacher! Strong accent, NO QUESTION ALLOWED during class, or why she took off some points on your tests. I got an A, but the book taught me, NOT HER!
Would not allow you to ask questions, would not allow you to leave early (not even 5 minutes) , seemed more concerned with attendance than teaching. Not willing to help you-refers you to your syllabus. It was a hard class for me and her accent is hard to understand at times and she says ok alot and quickly goes to next steps, chapters, etc.
this class was basically self taught. you will not get anything from coming to class. must read and study . you cannot rely on her notes. sakuta's notes for chem is very helpful. her attendance policy is crazy. its a student choice if they want to leave the class. we are the one that payed for the class anyways
She was very rude whenever you had questions. Seriously, it is the teacher's job to clear up any difficulties a student is having with the class..she gets angered whenever you need help. She's ridiculous and needs to find another job..
She is a nice teacher, shes very helpful, cures a lot, this class is a piece of cake with her, uses simple l;anguage, wonderful egs!!!!!and her tests are great...i made an A without studying nmuch ...i wuold advice any weak students 2 join her class ...coz shes really gr8!!!!!!!!
I couldnt understand her. Bottom line. I learned a lot of it in high school and I just never clicked with her way of teaching. Dropped it! SHES NOT A GOOD CHOICE!
Oh please. This teacher isn't all that bad. You just have too get used to her. Don't question her and don't ask too many questions (she doesn't like explaining the same thing over and over again). Students tend to be embarresed by her attitude but that's just the way she is and she isn't trying to be mean. Work hard and you'll survive.
Ok, she's a sweet lady, but she has a very thick accent. I took her over the summer, so she cut out a lot of chapters and the bulk of her tests came from her study guide. Will NOT let you out early, and her voice is kinda monotonous. If you don't remember much chem from high school, I wouldn't take her.
worst teacher I've ever had. seriously.
she is the best teacher ever...she is ready to help u wheneve u need help...i was never interested in chemistry before..but after taking her class i have changed my major..she is very helpful..she will stay after class to help u..
omg! do not take her the test were crazy and lab thats another story! if u dont remember much from high school do not attempt.
extremely easy teacher. very helpful. tests were directly from the study guide and homework. drops one test and homework grade at the end of the class. as long as u attend class and act as if ur paying attention, you'll b ok and pass with an A :)
Heavy accent, but you will get use to it. She can be a difficult teacher, but is helpful. She does drop lowest grade and gives extra credit work. Do not be late, do not leave while she is teaching, and do not leave early. I was suprise, but I did get an A in her class.
This woman is one of the rudest, most disrespectful person I have come across will attending several colleges. She has no problem making you feel like a fool in front of people and refuses to answer questions. I dread coming to her classes.
The beginning of the course I wasn't a huge fan of her teaching style, however by the end I realized she is an AMAZING professor. There is NO REASON why you can't get an A in her class. Attend class everyday, read text, take notes and do ?s in the book and homework handouts. What you out out, you will get back. She's helpful if you make the effort.
Very good teacher, but she takes a little while to get used to. She has a thick accent and talks endlessly! Over all, she makes chemistry understandable and sticks to her syllabus very closely. She is very good at breaking down concepts and giving short-cuts for problems. I would definitely take her again!!!
excellent professor...very helpful, very clear, easy A...take her..!!
She is great!! You have to pay attention and study. I never thought I could get through chemistry but she made it interesting and the way she breaks everything down I surprised myself by passing all the tests. Study hard,do the HW,and ? in book and you will pass
This is a great professor. I must admit I thought this class would be hard. But she made it very easy by explaining everything. If you take notes, study and come to class, you will make an A in her class
I took Professor Oates for 1152 lab. Great teacher. She does grade your lab reports hard, she takes off points for any little mistake. But over all she's great. She gives extra points for attendance. I recommend this teacher. Make sure you come to class to learn and not socialize because she will call you out for talking.
she was not that bad at all. she is a little hard to understand but she is ok.
She is a good professor. I took Chem1151 and Chem1151 Lab, and she kindly explained when I asked questions. I wondered how she teached for 6 hours a day without having Lunch because I didn't even have time for Lunch.
I had professor Oates for Lab and she was awesome! She is a little difficult to understand at first, but you quickly learn her accent and I didn't have much trouble after the first few weeks of class. She makes the subject interesting and is extremely clear when giving directions. She is a tough grader but will do anything she can to help.
She was a bit tough to understand but...eventually it was clear. She did kinda make me feel like an idiot one time in front of the whole class. For the most part though she was very thorough and detailed. Makes it easy to understand. She has a sense of humor too.
This woman is one of the rudest, most disrespectful person I have come across will attending several colleges!! She has no problem making you feel like a fool in front of people and refuses to answer questions. I dread coming to her classes.
Sit in the VERY front or you won't hear a thing. Class was a ridiculous waste, i dropped along with about 75% of the rest of the class. Take someone else!!!!!
Ms. Oates is a good teacher. It took a while for me to get over the language barrier, but once I did it was easier for me to understand her. She will explain the information but will not spend no more than 10 minutes and will encourage you to go to the tutoring lab. However you must raise your hand before you can answer or ask any questions. Sh
I love Mrs. Oates! She is such a great teacher. Her notes are amazing. There are 4 tests & 4 homework assignments that are turned in before each test. She gives you study guides about a week before the test and if you study them, then you'll be fine. Also, doing the examples in the book help a lot. Take her! She is great and so sweet :))
She is a wonderful teacher. She teaches in a way u just have to understand. Come to class and pay attention, do ur best you will get an A. Her tests are not hard at all. Plus she honestly cares about her students.
Professor Oates was awesome! Not too many professors can manage to pull off making chem interesting but she did. He class is straight forward, no busy work!! 4 test and 4HW assign. in Lec. Lab is a little more but you work it as you go. I would recommend her. I though the accent would be a barrier at first but I was over it in a week.
All i can say is, the material was a lot, but she is a great professor and gave extra credit. You will have to study your butt off, she made it clear and understandable.....Good teacher, wish she was teaching other science classes...
dr oates is an excellent teacher. she uses simple analogies to explain concepts.
Do not take this class. She is a horrible instructor. THIS IS A WARNING - STAY AWAY FROM THIS INSTRUCTOR. She needs to retire, because she does not have any passion to help the students.
sot a good teacher don,t take her class
not a good teacher do not take her class ,my friend told me to take her class. this is the worst class i have ever taken.i struggled to make a big in her class
Do not take this class. My friend told me to take her.i regretted taking her class.she is too strict with scores.i struggled to make a B in her class.i will not advice anyone to take her class
Professor Oates doesn't have the passion to teach nor have the patience to assist students with difficult questions about Chemistry. If you are looking for a professor that cares, she is not the one!
Chemistry should be about learning new things.I learned that having a professor that cares is just as important. Oates doesn't believe in giving extra credit work but she did offer one.She tells the students it is worth 10 points.I took the time to travel to the school and spent two and half hour and found out it is only worth two points.Stay Away!
Dr. Oates is a very nice and helpful teacher. She knows Chemistry, but sometimes makes it hard for her students to understand. Please do not waste your time asking her questions in class, she does not answer them she just continues with what ever it was she was discussing, she's funny. However she does take time out to meet one on one.
i thought she rocked! she was very helpful as long as you knew how to approch her. She likes to know your doing your best! Her test were difficult but she always gave bonus, and tryed to curve. i took her for summer and got an A, and im no chemist! and also she is so funny! she helps you really get the subject! i would take her again!
So hard to understand, and has limited office hours. Would have been better to just do online
Can't hardly hear her, but when you do, a lot of the things she says in lecture are pertinent to the material needed in order to pass. Also, her tests are easy if you pay attention in class and actually read the NOTES SHE MAKES! :D she makes notes for you ! What else can you want easy easy A
The tests are laid out very clearly so if you take good notes there will be nothing tricky about the test. She can be a little hard to understand at times.
Test don't have any trick questions. Listen in class, study the notes she gives you & it's an easy A.
It was easy enough class as long as you showed up and did your work as she told you to. But whenever someone asked a question, she always raised her voice like she was frustrated that students didn't understand something. She also expects you to show up early but doesn't open the door until it's time for class to start.
She is sweet and just do what she asks to the best of your ability.
She's very old school and not in a good way. she makes lab kind of unbearable but she is a doable person.
