her English is so hard to be understood and she always makes mistakes.Don't take her at all.
If you want to understand Clac III and pass the class with an A, take her!
She is OK, but you still need to read the book to understand the subject well.
She is one of the best math instructors I've ever had. Her exams are easy; they're basically right off the notes or the practice exams with different numbers or even the same numbers sometimes. The final was super easy. She gives lots of extra credit. If you wanna get an A in such advanced math class, TAKE HER.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! TAKE HER!!!
She is a great teacher! she gives a lot of help. She explains the material very well, so it is easy to understand. She is very nice and helpful and wants the students to do well. I would highly recommend her.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER if you want to understand math and attain a good grade. She is very rude and says she doest have time to answer questions. I dont know who allowed her to teach at this high level of math. The lowest math level is still too high for her.I would really hate it if I have to take her next semester,I wasted this one taking her.
DO NOT TAKE HER! if you want to really understand the subject dont take her! her lectures are boring, and she never answers questions about the homework! she wastes way too much time o useless stuff such as being late, but if you want to pass this class make sure you sit way in the front because you can barely hear her!
Lamia is a good teacher. She has a good heart and she is very respectful if you give her respect. You cannot rely on her lectures to learn all the concepts, so you will need to go over the book yourself. This class is an easy A if you do your homework and the study guides.
Respect doesn't help me understand math, not that this so called teacher has any for her students. Did the district run out of teachers or what? I am a hardworking, straight-A student and I got a C in the class. I relied fully on the textbook so coming to class was completely useless. Of course she will slack, theres no other 281 teacher. Remove her
My advice for students who are planning to take math 281 next semester, don't. Wait for the one after that if they have a new professor. Or if the college puts their brain in their head and gets a new one for this semester. Avoid teachers like this as much as possible. Don't ruin your transcript. Very bad experience i had in this class.
I don't know what these two below me are talking about; Lamia is a great teacher and she will help you a lot. She doesn't allow others to disrupt the class because she wants the rest of the class to benefit. At the beginning she is tough, but that is only so other students don't take advantage and walk all over her. I would highly recommend her.
Prof. Raffo is an excellent teacher and a lovely person. She does her best to explain the material and sincerely wants her students to succeed. Her quizzes and exams (including the final) are easy if you keep up with the class and do the homework (which she assigns a reasonable amount of,) and she offers plenty of extra credit. Take her.
I took instructor Raffo for Calc 3 and, despite all the negative reviews, I was pleased with the way she taught the class. Raffo made the class so easy that it was almost impossible not to get an A, let alone fail the class! If you want an easy A, then take her class.
I not recommend her at all. My grade was B+, but I got it depending only on my efforts. She doesn't know how to explain the material. In addition her English is incomprehensible, and a lot of times she can't realized our questions. Math 281 is a required class for many different majors, so avoid her to understand this class well.
Not the suitable teacher for math 281. not recommended her.
Good teacher... easy class! She is very nice and is available to help you if you don't understand. If you study outside of class, and pay attention in class, you should get an easy A. I would definitely take her again, and recommend her to everyone.
Good teacher... easy class! Very nice, and prepared. This class covers a lot of stuff so she teaches you what you need to know to get an A on the test, but if you want to really understand what you are doing you must work at it on your own! I've found her very pleasant, and enjoyed taking her. Would recommend!
I believe Raffo is a good teacher and she's very dependable. She is always one e-mail away. She was very intimidating in the beginning but became more lenient as time passed by. She teaches what you need to know and what is going to be on the test and gives you a lot of practice. But, there's also a language barrier.
She is a very tough grader. Her exams and pop quizzes are so so hard. She gives a lot of homework and expect you to study 15 hours a week. She have accent, and sometimes she don't know how to answer questions during lecture. She is strict about attendance and if you're late, then u are in trouble. I DO NOT recommend her.
This professor is very strict in terms of grading, attendance, and participation. She also does not allow students to come up with their own solutions. Because of these reasons she's not respected by her students. Take a course of hers if there's no other option. These reasons have made coming into class dreadful.
Initially, professor Raffo is a little intimidating, but warms up as the semester progresses. Test are fairly easy as long as you redo homework and do the practice test. There's a bonus question on each test, your lowest test score is dropped, and she gives plenty of partial credit. If you don't get at least a "B", you just didn't try.
Professor Raffo is perhaps the best Math professor I've taken to date. Her test aren't easy but she's more than fair when it comes to grading. Keep up with homework and other assignments and you should be fine on quizzes & Exams. If you love math, take her!
She is very organized and provides clear lecture notes. Stay up to date on your homework as there is a lot to cover in Calc 3. She does have an accent but it is very easy to understand her. If you put in the effort she is willing to help; she will not carry you though. If you've made it this far in math, you shouldn't expect handouts.
I had her for Calc 2 and 3. Calc 2 is easier than Calc 1. You must do the homework and put in effort. She provides very clear lectures and handouts. Practice tests are harder than actual tests but prepare as if they were the same. She does have an accent but she is easy to understand. Would take again in a heartbeat.
Do not expect the test questions to be patterned after homework, quizes, practice exams, groupwork, or lectures. Good Luck. English is not her first language making her lectures hard to sit through and distracts from the material. If you struggle with math do not take her class.
Mrs. Raffo is really bad. she has treated students as children. She made the class very hard.I don't advise to take her class. she is not fair.
she is very nice and helpful teacher. me and my husband took the class with her. we got A. her lecture is very clear, and she explain in very simple way. her exams are fair . if you read her lecture you are good to go.
She is the worest teacher ever she treats student like a kids i droped the class because of her way of teaching and treating students
She was a great professor you just have to know how to apply yourself in this class. You should always pay attention because her lectures are hard to understand because she has an accent. If you talk in the class out of turn she will get very upset. Her tests were pretty easy because she always provided a study guide one class before the test.
Honestly, just a really solid professor that's always there for you when you need help. In terms of her accent, if English is your first language, it shouldn't be a problem. Those that don't do well in her class probably struggled through Calc I and II or just don't put in any effort whatsoever. If you put in the effort you'll do well. Great!
she is a good teacher, and if a person want to learn math then I recommend lamia.
She is well prepared for the class and really nice professor. she pass out some handouts at the beginning of each section and they are very useful when you go back and read them on your own. always show up to her class and show up to her class because if u miss a lecture u wouldn't understand on your own great professor and I would take her again
Took this class concurrently with a class at SDSU. Professor Raffo is very clear and her material is easy to understand. Very easy to approach as well. Practice exam was just like the final. To the people complaining about her "accent," try going to a university and trying to understand the professors there. You wouldn't last a day.
Lamia is definetly a nice lady to know outside of class but she is not a good teacher at all. The class had a difficult time understanding her, she made us write essays... in a MATH class. If she took more time to explain the content I'm sure everyone would be able to pass but she rushed everything. Doesn't speak good english either
Raffo carefully proves all concepts to her students, which is a plus. She expresses great care to the class, and has made herself a source of courage. A very flexible teacher that wants to see you succeed. Math is hard, I agree, but with enough hard work, you'll find that it's for everyone. Offers excellent prep for tests and plenty of group work.
Awesome teacher. She really cares about your success, just give her the respect she deserves!
Average... Her lectures were boring, but the class was't hard. I took calc in high school. She makes practice tests. Note: the practice tests are about three times as hard as the exams, so don't stress over them as long as you know the concepts.
All you have to do is try hard like any other class. Professor Raffo is an excellent teacher as well as an excellent example of real college learning. If you put in the effort you'll see results. She can be a bit intimidating at times, but she definitely cares about your success if you show her you're putting effort in her class. Easy as that.
I don't even know where to start with this professor. If you miss more than 3 days you will be dropped, no questions asked. Practice tests are nothing like the actual test. Every lecture is just agonizingly boring. And the finish off the semester, only 18 students out of 41 passed the final. A class is only as good as its professor...
Professor Raffo is one of the best Math instructors I have ever met. She is excellent in lecturing the lessons, and she cares about her student's success if she sees that you're putting an effort in her class. Although she gives lots of homework, I recommend doing it because the homework problems help you pass her tests. I highly recommend her.
A good professor, but a little too fast paced for somebody who isnt that great at trigonometry.
Professor Raffo is a really good instructor. You do have to put effort if you want to pass. She makes you write explanations about how you solved questions. Some of her lectures did get boring. The practice exams are way harder than the actual exam. I wasn't able to finish the practice exams but I would still get A's on the exams.
Professor Raffo is really caring. She cares about students but she needs to see you make affort. She is always there if you have any question about the meterial. ALWAYS BE RESPECTFUL AT HER CLASS. Professor Raffo is nice she is always prepared and she does the best she can to deliver the meterial for you.
Lamia Raffo is one of the best math profs she cares a lot about the learning of her students and she explains very well she is always ready to answer any question and she is available to help outside the class during her office hours. If you really want to learn I recommend taking her
Typical day, gives you packet. Fill in the blanks, solve examples from packet with her in class. Sometimes felt really rushed. Assigned alot of HW (webassign). 3 Exams, 1 Final. Her quizzes are usually take home, some are in class but wont be "pop" or unannounced. She will make you work for an A.
Raffo has to be one of the best professors I've ever had for a Math Class. I honestly hated math until I took her class, she makes everything so simple and if you don't understand the material, she will go back until you understand. I would wait a whole year just to take the next level of Math with her just because I know I'll pass and understand.
Raffo is very good at giving lectures, is very organized, cares, and demands your respect in her class and she deserves it. You will leave her class understanding the material. Doing the WebAssign homework she gives will only reinforce what you have learned and fill in any gaps. Practice exams are always much harder than the exam, which is good.
Took her and failed. If you take this class in summer you wont pass, mess up your GPA and possibly not get accepted to school of your dreams. I however had it easier and studied hard and still failed a semester long class while most of the people in my class decided to take this course in summer and potentially fail. I don't recommend it.
Professor Raffo is the best Math teachers I ever had. She cares about students' learning, offers extra credit assignments, and gives all clear information (grades, announcements, homework and quizes reminders). You still need to study for the class of course, but it wont be really hard.
Raffo is a very bad teacher, she goes too fast and her heavy accent does not help with understanding material. If fail to show up 3 times she immediately drops you also, if you have an A but bomb the final, you fail the entire class. She's a very picky person and treats her class like children, homework and material is okay, her teaching, is not.
Showed up to class few times late due to my work schedule, shell embarrass you and then drops you if you have showed up late too many times. 5 min late thats all it takes. Class has Harvard standards and yet its a kids class. You wont learn much either. Studied so much and nothing helped. Easy failing class messed my gpa. thats all that counts no?
very helpful
she is a very nice professor, don't listen to the reviews below. They're crybabies and lazy. you have to put in time and effort to understand her work, and if people are still struggling, there's extra credit. If you don't understand her, drop the class or teach it to yourself, its not that difficult. it will help tremendously having past tests tho
She is one of the best math professors I've taken at Cuyamaca. She provides a lot of extra credit opportunities, gives you a lot of resources, and she's a good lecturer. Took her for summer and wasn't as stressful as I'd thought it'd be. I will say though, that final was very hard. Beware. As long as you do your homework and pay attention, you're k
she's the best math prof I have ever had. AMAZING woman. So intelligent. Not an easy class, but her passion& knowledge make it a great experience. Taking her again.
She is an amazing professor. full of knowledge .explane every thing just pay attention ans you will make an A
She is an amazing Professor. Just do the work and study your current events and you will make an A.
If you do what you were asked to do you will pass with an A
Really good professor!
This professor is very very very very very veryyyyy rude to her students, she has no respect for them, treats them like high school students. I don't know who she thinks she is.
Prof. Raffo gives packets on all of her material so its easy to go back and see how to do something. She works some of the packet with the class and then lets you do the other part of it on your own. Her study guides are harder than the exam so if you get the study guide you'll get an A on the exam. You have to put the work in for an A, take her.
I took math 180 with prof Raffo she was the best math instructor ever I really hate math but I passed it with A! The only reason I gave her 4 stars not 5 is because shes mean she need to learn how to respect students!!!
He is the best Math professor I ever had!!
Take her and she will prepare you good for your 4 years college
Be aware if you are few minutes late then you get dropped The class was horrible, can't go to the restroom the accent barrier is a serious issue that makes you confuse and can't understand, the class is like a prison where students jail in! The first thing you will need to know is RIP GPA, she gives non-realistic reasons to drop your test grade.
Raffo is definitely the best math professor I have ever taking. She cares about our learning she explains well and she is very nice. I love her a lot
The best
She is a not just a great professor but an incredible inspiring person. SHe is brilliant and prepares his lessons so well for understanding and discussion. I really learned so much.
SHe's a great math teacher.I highly recommend her
Raffo is best math professor.I highly recommend taking math 180 it with her if you wanna understand
SHe's a great teacher. If you know the subject, and you pay attention in class and take good notes, the tests are fairly easy to get. SHe is pretty easy to get to if you don't understand something and she will talk it over with you. Good study guides. Good jokes. I would definitely recommend her, just make sure to ask questions if you don't get it
Raffo is caring helpful and friendly professor l love her she helped me al lot when I missed the class because of my daughter sickness I went to her office and she went over the lecture again and explain everything during her lunch time .luv her
I have taken professor Raffo for math 280 over summer and took math 281 with her as well. Shes one of the best math professors that I have ever met. Shes a very hard working professor, and definitely helps her students whenever they need help. The key to being successful in this class is to work hard and respect professor Raffos rules!
SHE IS THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER! I took Math180 with her last semester and got an A and I'm currently taking Math 280 with her and still have an A. She is very considerate and cares about her students. As long as you try in her class, you'll be good. She gives great lectures and makes sure that her students understand the material.
Grades exams in 2 days. She was very accommodating during the virus. Exams are really easy compared to practice exams. Not sure why she has so many bad ratings. Easy A.
I took two courses with professor Raffo. She's honestly one of the best professor I had. She deeply cares about her students. Her classes are very organized. Also, she's always there for extra help outside of class. Take Raffo you won't regret it!
This math Professor, is one of the best math teachers. Professor Roffo, is very clear in explaining the material that the students needs to move foreword in his/her career. I would recommend this professor for any math class, specially the upper division classes.
Such an awesome professor. Took her class during summer which was a little bid challenging but I passed with A
Raffo is a very respectful professor, myself and so many people can vouch for that. Ask any student literally any student that has taken her class they can say how much of a great teacher she is. If you want to pass with an A, you 100% should listen to lectures and do the homework, because they will show up later.
Raffo has a very specific way of teaching. If you don't learn the way she teaches, you will have to teach yourself. Relies heavily on concepts rather than examples. I personally learn best with examples, so I had to teach myself most of the year as her lectures did not help me. Still had to sit through them because attendance is mandatory. Hated it
For an easy A, just do your work.
A good professor. I did not use the textbook I just payed attention to the lectures and I was fine. She gives a-lot of extra credit opportunities.
Worst teacher ive ever taken doesn't speak good English and makes fun of people trying to ask her stupid questions VERY RUDE
very rude very hard to understand what shes saying i dont understand how shes a teacher in this school.
Worst professor I've taken so far. Doesn't understand what you're asking.. regurgitates the textbook at you not really helping you understand what is actually going on. Comes off rude to student when they ask "dumb questions". Teaching myself the course via YouTube. Do not take her unless you want to spend time out of class doing the lectures. F -
Lamia is a really solid teacher. She's really caring as well. Talk to her if you need anything, she's very understanding & works with you to make sure you're doing good.
She always talks about how she never has enough time. She right really fast and erases even quicker during every lecture. Her explanations are awful and you have to teach yourself after. She quickly solves a problem with a lack of explanation. Shes rude when answering your questions and will make you feel dumb.
Shes a tough grader, but a good teacher. The subject itself was hard, so she tried her best to help the students understand it.
She required you to attend mandatory lectures but was good because they were recorded for use after. Exams were from notes/ homework but still challenging. Study!! Utilize the practice exam because of those help for the exam. Attend lectures because she'll do random whole-class quizzes sometimes. Otherwise, pretty decent teacher.
No zoom meeting for exams and the exam is usually easier than the practice exam. Records lectures and nice grader. Strict on attendance and she does randomly call on people during class and will mark you absent if you don't answer. If you attend lectures, take notes and do all your hw it's not too difficult of a class.
Shes nice and helpful for the most part, but when you ask her questions in class/if you answer something wrong she can be a bit rude and does not do a good job at explaining. Shes not the worst, but im definitely going to avoid taking any other classes with her instructing.
I took her for Calculous 1 (math-180) I had a vary hard time following her during lecture. She took forever to explain one question and would contradict herself a lot. She would not go slower with explaining or re-explain a concept b/c we should already understand it. I had to use a lot of outside resources b/c she wasn't very helpful.
Passive-aggressive monotone uninteresting lectures.
She is really condescending if you don't understand the material immediately. Practically shames you in front of the class if you dare say you don't understand. Lecture attendance is mandatory and you get dropped if you miss 2 meetings. Doesn't allow outside tools/ youtube to be used to learn lecture material whatsoever. She's the "only right way"
The reviews say it all. Yes, she will ridicule if you ask a "dumb" question. She expects us to know concepts that were not covered in lectures. She accused me of cheating, along with other classmates, on the first exam because I used a different method to solve a problem that she did not teach. The study guides are harder than the actual exams.
Simply put just don't take her. She's passive-aggressive, condescending, and most of all has no kind of flexibility. Her lectures overall are extremely dry and leave you more bored than focused. Not to mention in the off chance you can pay attention the material she is covering she is very vague about it.
She accused me of cheating for getting the same WRONG answer as another student. Almost sent me to the dean until I showed my work and process. A literal joke. Take another professor who actually cares about their students. Fyi- I never received an apology for it.
In all honesty, she's far from the worst professor I've ever had, however, that doesn't mean she's that great. As many others have said, she is very condescending to those who don't know what she thinks they should know. Keep this in mind if you are nervous about sharing answers with the class, you will more than likely be ridiculed for it.
Has exam reviews outside of class time she records and the problems are similar to what's on the exam. Gave us a week to turn in the final and gave us extra participation points she added to the final. She does want you to do the problems the way she does and sometimes write out conclusions on how you did it so make sure to take notes during class
she is very good
Not sure why there are a lot of negative ratings, Raffo is great! She has been very flexible during the whole semester and you can tell she wants all of her students to succeed. Follow along, participate during lectures. The exams are way easier than her practice exams! Pay attention and asks questions and you should get an easy A.
Took her for the summer session, even though I was warned it would be a difficult class due to the topic and rush. Made lecture videos that we could watch outside of class, were very useful & explained the topic clearly. Class time was for going through examples & questions (she was patient & not condescending at all) Ended up being an easy A.
Great teacher, gives lots of extra credit, not sure why there's any negative comments and reviews. she is very patient and cares about her students.
Professor Raffo is a bit cold but her MATH180 class was okay. I would take her again because of her policies and all the partial credit she gives.
People that rate her low probably didn't try as much. I can't assume but she is a bit cold but ALWAYS helps no matter what. She never looks down on students and stops to check if everyone understands freq. She is also willing to learn how to utilize her tools. If she doesn't know, just show her and she will learn on her own. Very good explanations.
I took her in Fall 2022 so I'm editing this review from November 2022. I don't understand some bad reviews. She was chill and merciful when it came to grading. She was rough on lecture teaching, but it was probably because it was online at the time. Overall I thought she was alright.
I've taken her class from calculus 1 to differential equations to say the least every time I took her class she managed to get better and better. That's the thing that what I thinks makes her a good teacher. She always Improving her teaching methods
The bad reviews view Lamia's feedback as negative when she's just direct and succinct. It's a lot of material to cover and she doesn't always get through it because Calc 2 can be confusing, especially if you're weak in algebra. Watch the chapter videos, take notes, ask questions, study homework to understand the material and you'll easily get an A.
Easily one of my favorite math teachers. She is easy going and is willing to work with you if you put in the effort.
Prof Raffo is very organized and clear in her teachings. She offers extra credit and drops lowest exam and homework. She teaches Calc 1 and makes sure her students are actually learning. Her exams are not too bad, just study the study guides as well as examples from previous tests that she uploads.
Prof Raffo is genuinely a hidden gem at Cuyamaca. She's super caring and passionate about calculus. I highly recommend her to anyone, as she's one of the best professors I have ever taken. Clear expectations and always available to students. Her teaching style is designed to make students succeed; study the practice exams and you will do good!
Professor Raffo is direct but cares about student success. Stay engaged, watch lecture videos, and use tools like unstuckstudy for extra practice - you'll likely get an easy A despite the material being tricky.
I was nervous for this class since I'm not very good at math. But this was one of the best math classes I've ever taken. Professor Raffo explains new concepts throughly, gives you time during class to start on and she'll even go over a few of the homework problems so you have a better idea of what to do. Overall a very great Professor.
Professor Raffo's teaching style was very clear and great for the calculus classes. she gave examples on everything and would go over them in detail. Everything on the test comes from the lecture and study guides she provides so make sure you're writing everything in the handouts during lecture and finish the study guides before the exams.recommend
Lamia is truly a great teacher. Some may perceive the language barrier and personality as criticizing, but it's just the way she communicates. Explains why incorrect answers are wrong, then explains it correctly. This was the first math class I took where I didn't need an online calculator outside of class to show me steps for some solutions.
She is very knowledgeable on the subject and she teaches very well. She makes sure to use lots of real world applications to make the material easier for students to learn and to increase engagement. Overall, if you pay attention during lectures, do your homework, and do the practice tests you will do well.
One of the worst professors I've had. Doesn't give partial credit unless all work is shown. Attendance is strict—more than 3 absences and you're dropped. Always has an attitude and makes asking questions uncomfortable. I don't recommend this teacher to anyone. Take only as a last resort. I've never written a review but she made it my first.
This Professor doesn't explain concepts clearly and often leaves students confused. Grading is harsh and inconsistent, half the class is failing. Lectures are not well structured.Overall, the class felt disorganized and frustrating. Also can't forget about the 7 minute break in a 2 hour class. Would not recommend unless improvements are made.
If you put in the work, Professor Raffo will help you. You just need to ask. Her manner of speaking can be a bit off putting, but she truly wants everyone to succeed. There are no poor questions and she makes herself available to go over concepts and is quick to respond. Planning to take Differential Equations with her in the future.
Don't waste your time with this professor. Take your math classes at Grossmont, this class was an absolute nightmare. If they try to offer math help (080) with Lamia, she will turn it into an extra hour of Calc instead of helping teach you the basics. 0/10 wouldn't recommend
Best calc teacher. Her online textbook is helpful, since I had a hard time paying attention. Study guides are harder than the exam, it helps because you can do all the easy questions on the exam. At the end of the semester she gives many re-attempts for homework. Attendance matters, miss too much she will email you saying that she may drop you.
