This guy is an interesting and friendly professor, I reccomend his class
SOOOO BORING, i dispised his class every time I had to go
He's great, loves what he teaches - just go to class and you'll do well!
Great class, kind of boring but an easy A
Lectures are complex, but if you can follow them, pretty easy
Nice guy, but most boring class ever taken!; teaches w/o pattern, not straightfw
King isn't real personable, but he's nice in ofc. hrs. takes attendance. READ!!
he made a tough course a lot easier. his tests are fair and relevant. good.
A very enjoyable proffesor who makes the class enjoyable.
not too difficult, just a boring class
Very fun class, makes you really think, not good for lazy people
a little too concerned with all of the african crap, a little ****
It's a world studies class, but yet all we talk about is Africa
very boring class.....i have to drage myself to his class every time i have him
No Comments
hes good, i find his class interesting, but im a history major
I cannot follow for the life of me this guys lectures and his tests... good luck
he makes no sense in his lectures...good luck! but nice guy
If you want to learn about African history take this course, but he's SO nice
Solid Professor. Not tough if you study/tests predictable. Learned lots
SO BORING! Tests were really hard but easy assignments for grades
knows his stuff. i like the class already
Dr. King is a great teacher. His lectures are good, though they jump a little. But they all tie together by the time you have to take the test.
I personally enjoy Dr. King's class. He does jump around in lecture, but, look at the short time frame in which he has to teach his pupils. I really like this class. He knows his stuff.

Dr. King is a fun teacher. Sometimes i walk out of there with no clue what he just taught in lechure, but he has so much info that he wants to get across he jumps around.
i was very confused in this class... it was supposed to be a current events class, but all we learned about was African history... i was never sure what i was supposed to know, or what i was supposed to do for assignments
my fav prof of the semester ... theres something about him ... he's so cute and adorable ... tests not bad (study guide) ... papers (if he says summarize ...SUMMARIZE ... just do EXACTLY what directions say don't try and do that whole thesis thing)
Dr. King is an interesting guy with intense facial expressions. He's a really great professor who knows his stuff but it seemed like he focused on Africa a lot. Either way his tests are hard and you need to study a lot but the writings are not to bad.
Papers were easy, two summaries and a history paper. easy-no typos means an A. Tests aren't bad if you know your material, USE THE STUDYGUIDE. helps to read over the material just before the exams, not too in depth.
hes a really good guy, and hes enlightening and he teaches well... hes prob my fav teacher this semester. he can have a few difficult quizes and such, but its all good bc hes so funny. get this dude
Very nice, enthusiastic guy who knows a lot about Africa! If you go to class and study your notes, you'll do fine. All tests have a take home, open note essay. Lectures are usually interesting!
Great guy and great teacher. Tests arn't hard if you study well and use the study guide. Papers arn't hard and he can give you pointers at office hours. Class can get boring, and he does focus a lot on Africa. I highly recommend him.
Interesting class, but he's very difficult to follow. The multiple choice questions are really tricky (a, b, a&b, all, none- kinda thing). does curve tests though.
Dr. King is a very nice man. The quantity of material he has to cover forces him to cover A LOT very quickly, and this is where I struggled. I didn't ever keep up with all the reading, and that wound up getting me...do the work and you should be fine.
The tests (w/ the exception of the final) were pretty straightforward--after the 1st one it is pretty easy to figure out what he's looking for on them. Great guy too, so this class is a good Non-Western.
Awesome guy. Very passionate about the material, and he knows his stuff. Almost always makes class interesting. Highly recommended, though you should be warned that he grades a bit tougher than one would expect. Oh, and he does have an "intense f
Loves what he teaches but sometimes jumps around in lectures. Very little homework. Study the vocab he gives for the tests and you'll be ok.
Second time taking a class with the man. he is always interesting, and forces you to "think outside the box of democratic values." Fairly easy class with easy essays. Class varies from extremely good to extremely boring.
Love Dr. King, his lectures translate to very clear notes, he takes attendence, but he's very likeable and straightfoward
How this man got so many good reviews--I will never know! He is terrible! CANNOT follow his lectures no matter how hard you try! Walked out of that class every day saying "what did we just talk about?!" Worst class I have ever taken! St
Long lectures that sometimes drone on, but pretty cool teacher overall
Great guy- lots of short notice reading, but relatively few assignments and one big reasearch paper at the end. for a 400-lvl, not bad at all:)
Dr King has a good approach to the subject. Lots of reading.. lectures produce several pages of notes. Two 3p papers and one 7p final. Lots of reading from several dif books.
A good professor with decent lectures, but a really amazing guy. Take advantage of his office hours and he'll help you in anyway that he can.
Everyone calls him Dr. Smiles for a good reason. Dr. King is so nice and is always around to help. His tests are hard, but basically just because African history is a generally hard topic. 10-12 pg research paper due at the end, but hell help if you need it. He rules.
The only thing I can say is do the reading before class because he jumps around in lectures and you won't know what he is talking about. His tests are only hard because he includes "all of the above" and "none of the above" for almost all of the questions..that's the only thing that gets me. A lot of things he lectures about seems pointless to the class. He is a cool guy but I would reccomend trying to get someone else for the class.
Take him!! He is easy but a bore... make sure you take notes, his tests are based on them. There are three papers which i put little to no effort into and recieved good grades. The presentation was easy considering everyone read right from their papers and recieved good grades. Lets just say I didn't read anything and got a B.
totally agree with person below, do well on tests or hope there's a big curve again. Really cool guy but is a little confusing. Take the class in a time when you at a very awake point in your day, little boring so try not to fall asleep. good teacher, and very knowledgeable
eh, it's an ok class.
interesting class, and he's a great guy. got an a- and didn't do a whole lot of work. couple of papers, tests can be kinda tricky with multiple choice and fill in the blank. he gives out study guides, so use them. what makes the class a little difficult is many african terms which can be somewhat hard to remember. good experience overall though.
Great Guy!!! his class is hard, but if you study for tests and make sure you write the papers well, you'll come out fine! he sounds like he's preaching when he gives his lectures, and it gets you into it b/c he is SO into it and SO excited!
Awesome Guy, Crap Class. He is that class, otherwise Africana Studies would be suicide. Gives A TON of readings, but he sums them up for you. If you go to class, you will pass!
Mediocre class, but a great professor. I think he could teach watching grass grow 101 and it would be interesting. You might try to take another class but AFST 200 is ok.
Dr. King is a teacher who loves what he teaches however his class is somewhat boring at times. His lectures are all you need to pass the course. He assigns 40 page readings but I never read a single article fully and I got an A in his class. Only 3 assignments, critical review papers, and 2 tests, the midterm and final. You will learn alot of info
Dr. King is boring. Or perhaps it is just the material. GAFST 200 is a history class, and if this isn't what you're expecting, then you may be shocked a little. I'm really dispassionate regarding him and the class and have no opinions. It just kind of is...
his class is really boring, but he is really nice. there's a ton of reading in this class though. the tests aren't bad, but you definitely have to study for them!!
This class was really really really interesting but hard and all completely new. He is REALLLLLY smart and it is a bit harder than my other gen ed classes but i learned alot!!!
He seems quite passionate about what he teaches. He's also very nice. The class was just much more difficult than what I had hoped for. Being in a class of 70 learning a difficult subject is well...difficult. The midterm was pretty hard even though he gave a study guide and the papers are graded extremely harshly. Take the class though!
this man is amazing...i learned so much from this class every other professor calls him a "prophet" i can see why..he is amazing!!! LOVE THIS GUY
midterm, final, 2 movie reviews, 1 book review, and participation makes your grade. he loves what he teaches, I didn't. midterm and final were hard, study more than just the study guide. The reviews were hard to write but if you try you can easily pull a B on them.
Dr. King is great. Not a lot of actual handed in assignments (look below) but SO much reading from articles and book chapters on blackboard to go along with discussion. He'll like you if you show interest and participate in discussion. The midterm and final were not bad at all the study guides help a lot.
Dr. King is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is very excited about the information he teaches and knows it well. Not an easy A but study guides help a lot.
Really interesting class, makes you look at history from a different perspective. Fair grader with papers and tests. Pay attention in lecture, thats where all test info comes from. Gives lots of readings, do them if you want but I didn't and I feel I did just as well without them, they just give you more background info.
Hard!!!! Class is like taking another language, very intense. read the book and study in groups. going to his office hrs don't really help much. He's a nice man
Dr. King is a baller, heard he has whiskey for breakfast. On the reals, follow his notes as fast as you can cause he speeds through them then expects you to know it all on tests. Go to class! missing one day can screw you. Tests are hard, essays are easy to ****.
Dr. King was a wonderful teacher. A lot of reading, 3 papers, a midterm and final. The test are pretty hard but if you go to every class (required), you should be fine. He shows a lot of interesting movies in his class. There isn't anything you have to write a paper on that you can't get assistance with by using wikipedia. Take him for GAFST!
Dr. King is very knowledgeable. He is a powerful speaker, and he keeps you awake with this voice. In the class, he has a mini outline projected for you to take notes off of. There is a lot of reading for this class, and, though you can sometimes get off with not doing it, doing the reading helps you understand! Exam study guides and fair grading!
Good speaker, fair grader, difficult tests (but fair). 3 (4 page, double spaced). Quite a few articles to read. Sometimes nobody in the class would read the articles, and he would just skip that topic until we had read them. Take the class for a good experience and a fair A or B.
LOVE LAMONT!!!!! 4 papers, all straight forward, fair grader, midterm and final. He is the nicest guy, makes me want to wake up at 9am to go to class because it's sooo interesting. would have never thought id like the class, lamont made me love it! TAKE HIM
I had zero interest in the subject before taking this course and it ended up being my favorite of the semester. Dr. King is a GREAT professor. His passion for the course makes all the difference. I strongly recommend him!
Dr. King is a well rounded professor. Everything that you need to know is pretty straightforward. There's a big research paper due at the end of the year for the class, so, if that scares you, don't take GHIST with him. He's not too difficult and his lectures are entertaining. I've never fallen asleep in his class :D. Plus, you get to watch movies!
Dr. King is very nice! His lectures are very fast passed and you have to take tons of notes, but you learn lot and the information is interesting. two papers, a book review, a mid term and a final. If you don't want to work hard then dont take this class, but i would take him again.
Dr. King is a great professor and he's so nice!! He is extremely knowledgeable and I learned a lot. There's kind of a ridiculous amount of reading, and the exams are hard, but just make sure you take A LOT of notes. The papers aren't bad if you take a lot of notes on the movies.
I had Lamont for 3 semesters while an undergrad. If you read everything and take notes in lectures/speak up, you easily can get an A. If you're like me and don't do that, you can easily get a B. I did.
Unless you absolutely love history, don't take his class. To fulfill cluster one needs- i'd advise taking something easier. He is a very tough grader- especially on the papers, and his study guides are a list of terms, that we're supposed to know everything about. OH YES LETS KNOW EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT TIBET. attendance taken daily.
He's just the sweetest man. He's super passionate and always has a smile on the entire lecture. This class is hard though, because his lectures are so fast-paced and the exams were pretty tough. I learned a lot though.
He is a really nice professor, but the class is hard in general. I had to work really hard to maintain my B but it's an interesting topic and he is the coolest ever!
Lots of reading on blackboard, but he goes over almost all of it in class. 2 movie review papers & 1 novel review (Devil on the Cross) & 2 exams. Exams are easy if you keep up with the reading & study. Don't buy the textbook, you won't read it. Take this class if you're interested
Dont take this class unless you already know alot about history. doesn't post grades on blackboard. So much reading- the quizzes are tricky, you can do bad on them even if you read. He jumps around in his lectures and expects you to already know everything. Study guides are thrown together and disorganized. I dont recommend him for this course,
Dr. King means well, because you can tell he is extremely passionate about Africana studies, but his lectures are way to fast paced, and he assumes you know everything about history prior to attending his class. There are a lot of big readings and something as simple as a movie review turns into a 4 page analytical essay!
He is very passionate about the subject and knowledgable and I was a history major while in this class and he made me dislike my favorite subject. He is hard and confusing and BORING.
Prof. King is so sweet and really a nice guy. That said, this class is SO boring and I found it way to intense for a gen ed! There are a ton of readings and you need to know so much information for the midterm and final. Your grade is made up of: 2 movie reviews, 1 book review, midterm and final. I wouldn't suggest taking this class.
King is a really nice and such a sweet guy.He really cares about what he teaches. That being said the lecture is poorly organized and it gets very boring. If you read the chapters carefully and attempt to take notes in class you will do ok. He does not put up notes, just a rough outline and then talks about each subject.
DO. NOT. TAKE. His lectures are long, boring, and unclear. There is an excessive amount of confusing readings. There are only five grades and he can be a pretty harsh grader. There is way too much material and content to cover for the midterm and final. He expects way too much for a general education course.
Dr. King was great! He was really funny and very knowledgeable. His grading is pretty fair. There is a lot of reading. He shows a lot of films that are very interesting and help you to retain information, but they're pretty heavy.
Dr. King is a very interesting professor & clearly knows a lot about Africana studies. His lectures are a little long, but if you pay attention & take good notes, you should be fine. 3 film reviews a semester, 1 midterm, & 1 final. Take your time & edit your film reviews & you should be fine. Shows interesting (yet intense) films.
Dr. King was super enthusiastic. However, the content is boring and its confusing. If you take the class you have to take extensive notes, not on just what the powerpoint says but on his comments too. Study really hard because there arent a lot of filler grades. He does give a study guide which is helpful. wont need the textbook, readings online.
The presentations are frivolous and I learned next to nothing. Tests are more difficult than they should be and there is a great deal of reading. Nice guy but horrible class.
He teaches the material well although sometimes he can ramble and it can get a bit confusing. Take notes of what he writes on the board and says!!! there's 3 tests which has some fill in the blank questions so make use of the study guide he provides! tests have a 3 page essay portion. Lots of reading! But you can get a good grade if you work for it
King is a sweet guy who knows a lot about history, however he is a horrible teacher! He gives you notes that have no information in them and makes you read an unrealistic amount from the textbook each week. He expects that everyone knows history just as well as him which is obviously not the case. If you take this class, avoid this teacher!
Very passionate about the subject, but it seems like King much more focused on the memorization than the understanding.
So much freaking reading. Literally gave us over 80 pages to read one night for homework. The lectures are only interesting sometimes. He's older and technologically inept. You only have two tests and three papers for a grade. The class isn't awful to take, but not something I'd recommend for an easy A gen ed
I love Dr. King. If I could design my "perfect professor", it would be Lamont King. He is passionate and vested in your education. I took him for GHIST 150 and then chose to take him again for AFST 200. Now, because of Dr. King, I am minoring in Africana Studies. Highly recommend if you want to become an enlightened student.
Dr. King really knows his stuff there's no doubt about that. His class can get a little confusing and go far deeper into the subject than a GenEd probably needs to. However, he's an interesting and nice guy. The AFST 200 class is taught across disciplines so if you like history take it with Dr. King. Readings are long and difficult but necessary.
Hands down, the worst professor I've ever taken at JMU. "Lectures" are all over the place, and he just puts a bunch of random words in a word document and rambles on. Before the quizzes, you have to read all the scenarios in a book, and he asks 12 T or F questions that are impossible to remember in the reading because the reading is like 100 pages.
This class was very poorly organized by Dr. King. He was very confusing to understand in lectures and tests were pretty difficult. Good guy, but made this class boring and confusing.
Dr King was very boring to have. He doesn't do much to help you when it comes to exams. He has a 7 page paper you have to do and very little for you to work with when it comes to it. Gives out no rubrics and hard to please. He stutters and makes way too much eye contact. His lectures are uninteresting and he rambles a lot.
He is a very nice man and loves teaching. He is really knowledgable in his teachings and I thought a lot of the lectures were interesting but at 8 AM it was sometimes hard focussing for over an hour. There is some reading and you will find more success on the tests if you do the reading.
Lectures can be very boring but informative. He'll meet with you and explain in depth. He's very passionate but can go off track. Youtube videos of the vocabulary terms really helped me to connect the dots and understand the material
Read and do yourself a favor by learning basic african geography or you'll never understand what's going on. You HAVE to STUDY. The final is cumulative but he grades on a curve
Be ready to write two hard papers. King is nice, but boring. Papers are difficult but tests are easy. READINGS and quizzes on them were the WORST. He doesnt use canvas and rarely is available. Class is not an easy A.
Although Lamont King seems passionate in what he teaches, he speaks very slowly to the point that the class is quite boring. he is not clear on instructions so its best to ask him any questions... there is also no rubric for any papers you do or quizzes, etc.
