shes helpful and with good intentions, but not very clear in her lectures. her notes are useless when you try to do your homework. be prepared to do lots of independent studying.
This professor is by far the WORST professor I have ever had in college. While it is true that she does have good intentions, these "good intentions" do not outweigh her lack of understanding her students. She does not connect well with her students AT ALL! She is very, very oblivious!
just do the work. easy if you understand the work. over all she has a accent that is some times hard to understand. also she assumes that the class already knows what she is talking about.
Loved her! I think she's fabulous! I have a math aversion and she completely helped me defeat it. Her class was coherent, concise and fun. I wish there were more like her.
You'll regret it if you take her class, unless you really like a challenge & have lots & lots of free time to learn the material outside of class
STEER CLEAR OF THIS PROF!!! Exams are nearly impossible to finish and very difficult, with questions completely different than in-class examples. Homework assignments take 12 - 18 hours. She confused this Calculus III class with Vector Calculus (three courses after this one),so her expectations are that of much more advanced math students.
Teaches at high energy. Does teach by the books. Hard to follow. Make up her own test and homework. We had a take home final and in class final. Take home final was 6 pages long with 4 questions with parts "a" and "b". That sucked. Didn't have time to study for inclass final.
Dude. She just have a different style of teaching. It's rare to find a good teacher, who knows their stuff. Just study hard and get to know her. She's actually cool.
Lan has an overwhelming lack of empathy for her students. She is constantly saying the material is "really easy","baby level for math", or "a piece of cake". She said she has no idea why students do so poorly on the exams because the material is so "simple". She says each hw assignment should only take one hour, which is rediculous! Avoid her!
Lan has a great sense of humor and a smile on her face at every class. It's clear she enjoys what she's doing and cares about the students. Her tests are tough (compared to problems in book) but she is very fair and gives ample opprotunity to pass the class. She will require you to think so if you don't like to...stay away.
Great teacher. Good sense of humor, willing to help anybody. Also great knowledge of subject material, she makes it interesting.
She uses a lot material from Linear Alg. (254). So if you plan to take both 254 + 255 the same time, find someone else. She's got thick accent, but understandabel. However, her course requires some programming you TI or Excel.
she is nor very helpful if you must pass this class this semester i dont recomend her because she assign hwk and dont collected which its good if you dont how to get the answer you has to go to the tutor because she doesnt explain any problem she assign for hwk, if you r a business how gpa n sat score can relate to business
Hong is really smart and she definitely tries to work with her students. Maybe sometimes she's a little flaky (like posting homeworks on the website) but otherwise she is very helpful and slows down when you need further explanations. The only complaint I have is the crazy amount of chalk particles on her hands, but that's the school's problem.
Lan is one of my all-time favorite teachers. Math255 is a difficult class but Lan's practical teaching make it enjoyable. Her handouts and practice exams were beneficial. She held additional review sessions for those who were a bit rusty with basics. Don't hesitate to take her class; she's a kind and knowledgeable teacher.
The Good: Lan Hong is very caring and wants her students to learn. Her explanations are usually good and clear. The Bad: She works at a frenetic pace and then panics she has lot people. She strangely was worried that students would sue her for not covering all the material. Her HW assignments take on average 10-15 hours per week to complete.
Got a B out of Hong's class. Hong can generally explain concepts well. She is terribly disorganized and was usually 10-40 minutes late for appointments. I would recommend not taking her as she gives ridiculously long homework assignments. Introduces extra material yet she never could finish the topics on the syllabus. Avoid like the plague.
Hey guy ! she was great teacher, she was much helpful. If you try to do all the homework, then exam will be easy, just like piece of a cake.
Avoid this teacher!! Spend very little time on each section, and gives quizes once a week. She uses MathXL so all homework is done online. Has an accent that sometimes makes it hard to understand. Sometimes gives the class trick questions to see if the class is understanding the matireal, but it only confused me even more. Had to drop the class.
While taking Lan Hong's multi-variable calculus class, I would fantasize during every class session about her using a triple integral to find the volume of my car as I was running her over with it.
Heres the reality. She's a fantastic teacher but she is very difficult. You can not just squeek by you have to study alot and figure the material out. Do her recommended problems and do all of her practic exams. She can explain things very well, which I love in a teacher. She is also very fun to have as a teacher. I have taken three cls's w/h
I've had Hong for several of my math classes. If you need to know the material, she's great, but very difficult. Demanding homework, extensive learning, and all-but-required group work will get you an A. Good teacher, but you have to make the effort.
Wow! If you are looking for a challenging class then this is your prof! She is smart and she expects the same out of you! Homework is a must; study and you'll be fine! Hang in there because you're gonna need it. Don't pick her if you are looking for an easy A. If that's the case then she's the wrong prof for you!
DAAAAMMMMNNNNN.... she is hard but very helpful after class in explain Math 255, yes you will get made at her but at the end if you do your homework and study then it willbe all worth it i would take her a again
Very helpful, one of my favorite professors, don't be afraid to ask questions in class. Go to her office hours if you need help because she can focus on you more. I took this class during summer and it was not bad. If you've got a knack for math than it'll be much easier, if not just study hard and do he recommended problems and practice tests.
If I had not spotted Ms. Hong had calculated my final exam wrongly, I would have failed. She is extremely hard, hard to understand, and not flexible in the least. I advise to avoid, at all costs.
Lan is so nice and seems to sincerely try hard, but it's hard to give her a good recommendation. She knows her stuff, but teaching lower level math isn't her thing. Class participation is limited, the pace of the class is very fast (she blames it on the pre-req classes).. she was constantly late to class! To get an A, rely on your own hard work.
She is fabulous! Knows her stuff. Always prepared. Hw every week, worth 20 pts, practice finals, take home problems worth 30 pts of your exams. Willing to help during/and outside of office hours. Show that you want to learn, and she will help you to the best of her ability, and with her this says a lot. Slight problem with being on time. 141/252 got A's
Lan is a most capable math teacher. I think she uses just about every teaching method to explain. She often tells us how to get an "A" in her class. She's tied for my favorite math professor. BTW she has a small voice, so: no talking is allowed when she's lecturing; you might want to sit toward the front.
Ms. Hong is really smart, maybe too smart for math 96. I took her during the summer time. There is usually a low success rate during summer, but I found that it was impossible to pass her class. I studied 4 hours a day and got a D. She might be ok during the normal semester, but dont take her during summer! I found it difficult to understand her.
Prof Hong is wonderful! I adore having an instructor that loves her subject. She genuinely wants her students to succeed and is always available for help. This was the hardest math class I have ever taken but she is the best teacher I have had and I would gladly take another course with her.
Prof Hong explains concepts VERY WELLand is FAIR. She wants you to pass the class, but not without learning the material. Even though her tests are EXTREMELY difficult, she tries hard to prepare you. Will not test you on things she hasn't lectured on yet. She's always there to help during her office hours, all you have to do is take the initiative.
Pr. Hong is a great teacher. If you really want to learn the subject, please sign up and take her courses, of course her class is very challenging but after your done, you will feel like you have learned a lot. Feel free to ask her questions, she can help you a lot.
Prof. Hong is EXTREMELY intelligent and knowledgable throughout her lectures. She is also very funny, and along with her accent, the jokes she crack liven the mood in the class and make it that much more enjoyable. She tends to move a little fast; you won't be too far behind if you study and do the assigned work. Overall a good Calculus instructor.
Forget learning the concepts, she places much more emphasis on convoluted calculations. She heavily favors those that visit her in the office when grading time comes, even if they aren't that bright and get little from the class. Pretty snobby as well. Avoid if you are really interested in learning or need good a GPA to get into university.
She's nice, sometimes funny, and very helpful in office hours. She goes to great lengths to be fair. She only tests on what she's lectured.
My favorite part was the HW. The HW is short, but very challenging. The problems are not from the book. She is very fast because she wants to get through all the material. She really cares about the learning, visit her during office hours and you will see. One of the best math professors in the SDCCD system.
Math 96 is tough. Professor Hong is great. She is fast because she has to be. She is patient, caring, respectful and has a sense of humor. She will make time for you in her office hours and is good with returning calls and emails. Her homework is reasonable. If you are having a hard time, use office hours and get tutoring help from the college.
I took this class online, so I had very little interaction with her. But the two times I went to get help during office hours, she was very helpful. One time she spent 30 minutes on one thing until I understood it.
Had her for trig and she was very nice, but very fast paced. Take advantage of her office hours and the tutor - that's what pulled my grade from a D at the beginning to a B at the end. The examples she gives on the board are a lot more simple than the problem she gives on quizzes. I'd take her again.
She is the best Math teacher I've had in a long time! She explains everything very clearly and makes sure you understand all of the background work so you understand the problems, which most Calculus teachers tend to leave out. She is hilarious and makes Calculus fun even though I was having a tough time. I am now getting an A.
NICE TEACHER, EXPLAIN VERY CLEAR, TEST AS HOMEWORK
First off, she has a very good sense of humor. Take notes during her lectures, do the online homework (which is very easy), a bunch of quizzes, 4 midterms, and a final. Sounds intimidating, but it's not bad if you get it. She's very helpful and goes at a slow pace to make sure students get it. My fav class and I'm taking her again for Math 96!
She is slow to respond to problems and is extremely unhelpful, and even gives out misleading or false directions. This was an online course, and it has required a minimum of teacher interaction. The slowness of her replies suggests she's too busy to give this course the little attention it requires of her.
ENGINEERS: do NOT take professor Hong if you have another option!!! It was pure math with hardly any practical examples. Ms. Hong is brilliant and nice, but she did not cover applications at all.. even though 90% of class was engineering majors.
Professor Hong was difficult but fair in grading. Do the homework, do the practice tests, go to office hours and you'll be fine. If you are a math major, do extra, class was steered to the engineers since the majority was engineering students. This class will prep up you for upper division work, but do more proofs then assigned.
She was a very good teacher, as a first year college student I learned a lot from her and prefer her to be my teacher in higher division math courses but at times class can get boring but it becomes manageable.
She is extremely helpful and cares for her students. Gives lots of examples and has a lot of patience. Definitely take her class. gives online hw which is extremely easy. The test are somewhat similar to practise test.
I took Prof Hong's Math 121 class last fall. It was a hard class, but she was an excellent teacher. Always helpful if you visit her during office hours. She provides you with the necessary tools to do well on the tests, however the tests will challenge you. I made a B in her class, but easily made an A in Math 122.
DR. Hong was the best math teacher i had at SDCC. She is very helpful, willing to take the time and help you with anything you need. She keeps the class interesting with her little historical tid bits about math. Her tests are tricky, but if you pay attention it's a guaranteed A. her class over prepares you for the final exam. Best teacher I had.
AWESOME, very good teacher, lecture is interesting easy to understand, tons of examples, easy quiz and hw is easy, always available in her office hours, attendance not mandatory but you'll get really behind if you miss class, test are bit tricky but are easy, not an easy A if you dont put effort just show up to class do hw n yu'll be fine
Very, very helpful professor. Will take the time to help you and will even do study sessions prior to tests. Show step by step solution and explains everything very clearly. GREAT professor. She is very funny and her class is interesting, she is definitely not one of those boring professors who just writes problems on the board.
You can tell she's a programmer. She writes her own handouts that are summaries of the textbook. Has a sense of humor. Make sure you can execute all problems she has assigned in class.
She is a very helpful professor! She always took the time after class hours to her her students that needed more help. She clearly knows what she is doing and she keeps the class awake with her funny little remarks she makes about the subjects. By far the best math prof I've taken in SDCCD.
she is simply the best
Homework..challeging;Quizes..none;Test...Anxiety; In the end, worth it. She is a tough, but FAIR professor. To get an A, you will have to work, but it is not impossible. She is helpful at times, and available at others. She expects a lot from her students, but what good teacher doesn't. Do not take with other diffucult classes. Good luck
Not recommended for summer. She teaches like this is a full term class by expecting us to memorize everything. To be fair, she is helpful. Unfortunately I did not enjoy her explanations or teaching style. For a compressed summer class, please add some leeway in terms of memorizing equations and formulas. That took away from learning the concepts.
Not recommended for summer session. Had to memorize every single formulas/equations along with non-math equations (physics, banking, etc). She does give a lot of examples but glosses over steps. Would like to see some good core examples explained all the way through. Her lectures made me more confused. I was better off studying the concepts myself.
I wished she taught all Mathis so I could only take her. She's an amazing dedicated professor. Love her!
Pros: Very helpful and clear. She's a very good teacher overall. Cons: Ideologically opposed to extra credit, dropping lowest exam, note-cards on tests, etc. Not recommended for summer school, but she's pretty good overall. I think the lack of extra credit and notes probably did me in, (I got a C). But she's still a decent teacher.
Great Math Prof. ever in City College.
I have to say this not a good teacher to learn math from. This was for an online class, she commented only 6 times in the first month and then after that didn't post again for over 2 months. She didn't respond to emails and did not answer a math question on the forums in a Pre Calc math class. There was no help given to students for 2 12 months.
I took prof. Hong's calc 2&3 and linear alg. classes. Great math teacher. Very organized with a clear plan for the entire semester. She grades fairly, but she's not going to make it an easy A. Take her classes if you actually want to learn, not just pass a requirement.
Extremely unorganized. Horrible grader. Tests are extreme in comparison to what she teaches you. I used to love math until I had this instructor. Ive always excelled in my math classes but this teacher made it a struggle 100% of the way.
Prof. Hong was perfect for summer calc II. Crystal clear on examples. Very helpful one-on-one during office hours. No quizzes, but fair amount of homework. Has study guides on her website for various concepts. Tests are very time constrained and difficult, but nothing that is beyond lecture. She has a great personality and sense of humor.
Easy class and learn a lot of important lessons during each chapter.
Love her a lot, her teaching was awesome and helpful for HW, Midterm, and Final.
The best professor that I have had after 7 years of school. Notice I took every class with her that I could. Her lectures are very engaging. She reads students body language and adjusts her lectures to her specific class. She's very humble, funny and makes class fun. City College is very lucky to have Dr. Hong. If you want to learn, she's the one.
She is by far the best math professor I have taken. I have also taken math 96 with her and she is still amazing there. She cracks jokes here and there to keep the class awake. The material is hard at times but she makes it understandable and is great at explaining it. Her office hours are always available and she is always willing to help out.
I thought I wasn't going to do well in the class but Professor Hong is good at what she does. She explains well (with humor) and encourages questions. Keep up with the homework and you'll do great.
Uses powerpoint, captures images after each sheet and uploads them promptly. Summarizes each section of the book and also provides outlines for the school semester. Very concise and clear office hours, and even offers refundable deposits on the textbook. Tests do reflect the homework given every class, due at the next class.
Prof. Hong is a GREAT math professor and I was not ready to take her. Overloading myself with 5 classes (I was taking stat on top of her trig class) was not a good idea. She's awesome, very clear, and will make you work for that A (even that B)! If you think you're good in math, she's the one to take! Otherwise, heed my words, she's a tough one!
Well I took prof. Hong at City College, and she was professional. However, her tests and teaching the material was not realistic. She is very tough with grading. The last two tests, the whole class failed and I decided to drop her class! Take a different professor. She not really helpful.
Most Accurate Review: Writing of the problems in the correct form is very important to her - she will deduct points for small issues. If you plan on using math in your future career and are already good at it - take her class. If you're barely learning and came from math 038, I don't recommend her class, she's very fast. She will tutor you though.
If math isn't your cup of tea and you're a slow learner like myself. Don't take her. She will only set you up for failure. I had to drop her class. She is just terrible.
Dr Hong should teach how to teach.: by far, the best professor I've ever had. Incredibly organized and caring. If you really want to understand math, she's the one that will guide you through the essence of it. If you're looking for something easy where you don't have to learn much to "pass", go somewhere else. Took her for M151 and M255.
If you're not so great in math Do Not take her class, she goes through her lesson very quickly. We were always ahead than what she had originally scheduled in the syllabus. I'll put it this way, there were times she "taught" an entire section in 10 minutes. She is a very taught grader. She deducts major points if your work is not "clear" enough.
Best professor ever! I took her twice.. she's the best.
This professor is so fast pace and hard to understand. Her grading criteria isn't the greatest she's a tough one. I failed her class and I have not failed any of my classes here at City College. Take her at your own risk.
Got 102% in calc 1 and had to drop calc 2. Calc 2 in itself is a very hard, intense class, but she doesn't sooth the pain at all. I am a pretty mathematically-minded person and I could not keep up with her. Take the 121/122 series if you can; it will make your life a lot easier. My best advice is to know identities in and out for calc 2.
Helped with all things math. Has a TA that also is very helpful. Inspiration teacher. Have the feeling she does it because she is great at not for money!
Don't take her class! she won't let you know your Grade until the very last day! she won't even let you know how your doing so you can take precautions to drop the class (if needed) She doesn't have a way to check grades/midterms/quiz/homework Very disorganized and gives way to much homework all you do is write notes.
She is a great professor, she explains everything well and gives you tips to solve math problems faster. Homework and quizzes are mandatory to pass the class, so don't expect to pass the class if you missed more than 2 quizzes. Also if you miss one class, you could get behind because she covers about 2 chapters per class.
Having just finished my BS and looking back on my CC experience I would say CC left me woefully underprepared for the rigors of STEM work at a university. I didn't know it at the time, but professor Hong was the best math teacher I could have taken at SDCCD as her lectures, problem sets and exams were the closest to the real thing. Highly recommend
Leaves tons of homework, expects you to know everything, goes super fast not caring about students understanding. Tests are super hard and complex. Gets annoyed when students ask her questions. Is even sarcastic when discussing grades. Partial credit is almost impossible. Not a good experience!
She's a very nice professor, but she expects way TOO much from students. 20+ Hours in tutoring must have a 90% in class hw online, and instead of going over study guide on a day before the test she puts in a lecture. Don't skip class if you don't know the material.
She gives you all the tools to achieve an A , it's up to you to use them . She has accesible office hours, allows(and encourages) group homework, and will drop 2 lowest homeworks. You don't need to buy the textbook, but you will use it. She doesn't give extra credit. I would take her again if she teached 151.
I was so pleased with her class that I was disappointed she wasn't teaching 96 in the spring. This was the first math class I had taken in 20 years and I enjoyed myself. She was so excited about her subject and was fantastic at relating how we would use what we learned in class in everyday life. I will be searching out her classes in the future!
To rule out cheating, she implemented policies that made the course even harder. Students signed for in-class for a reason, and with the recent switch to online learning, she made the tests longer and exponentially harder than usual to prevent students from looking answers up. On top of that, late submission went from 1 pt to 1% deduction.
A solid professor that understands how to teach in an online environment. Lectures are optional. Practice exams are just like the real ones. Exams are open notes, and she'll often give partial credit on missed problems. I'll try to get her again for Calc 3 and future math classes. My favorite class this semester.
8 Assignments, 3 midterms, and 1 final. She was very accommodating throughout the semester. Linear Algebra is deceivingly difficult, so be prepared to study independently much more than you think. Tests were a bit easier than the homework/practice test. Lectures were very helpful to understand the material. Disorganized, but not a big deal.
The most time consuming course Ive ever taken. This class should be considered a 30 unit course because thats what it felt like, it took up more of my time than the rest of my 4 classes/16 units combined last semester. If you enjoy taking exams then youre in luck because professor Hong gives about 5 days between each exam. 6 hours of studying a day
I've never gotten anything but an A+ in any of my math classes before so I felt pretty confident going into this class but prof hong made this class near impossible to pass the topics she went over were way over complicated and the exams went over things that she never mentioned. If you care about your 4.0 like I did, take someone else.
I was honestly excited for this class having done pretty well in my previous calc class, but professor hong shut down any hope I had of doing well in this class when she basically made the students teach themselves all the material, leaving us clueless for what to expect on the exams. I had to take calc 2 again and Aced it with a different prof.
Nearly impossible to pass if you're not doing your own research outside of what she teaches in class. She will test you on material that is hardly gone over in class. The material isn't necessarily difficult but she does not prepare you for exams whatsoever which is the most important part of the class.
I dont think a single person passed her course with anything above a B. I took this class alongside some of the smartest people I knew but even they struggled to maintain a good grade in this class because of the specific way she wants everything to be done and the insane grading criteria she has. Exams are also way too long for the time given.
As far as calc 2 goes, this class was not too difficult. If you do the homework and practice exams (practice exams are exactly like the actual exams) you'll definitely pass. She also allows you to use notes on the exam and if you took notes on the practice exams/homework you should have an almost identical reference to the problems on the real exam
Ms. Hong is very understanding! I'm dumb at math but I passed with a C+ because her lectures helped a lot. It's a twelve week course with two assignments given each week but don't worry if you don't get the lectures, she provided a lot of outside materials and lectures to help you better understand the material.
This class was honestly mentally draining and I hated the though of having to go to one of her lectures. Although she was a kind professor she wasn't good at actually teaching her students. Students are expected to learn by themselves. 3-4 homework assignments a week with ave 30 problems each (also including multiple parts for each question).
Lan Hong has a lot of compassion for her students and seems to want to see them succeed, but the format of the lectures needs to be improved. Gave lectures about sections we already had hw due for and spent entire lectures reviewing previous chapter material. Relies too much on Pearson to teach, would tell the class to just watch the videos online.
I have had Professor Hong for four classes now, and there honestly couldn't be a better math professor. She makes learning hard material fun, cracking jokes in lectures about the material and keeping the lessons engaging. You can resubmit work if you are unsatisfied with your original grade, and the tests always follow the material in the homework.
Took this professor for both online (Math 151) and in person, and in person is much different and better. Self teaching is needed as always for math but not as much. Her lectures cover a lot of the material and they help clear the air and strengthen your understanding. Going to her office hours is very helpful and she will gladly assist you!
Lan wants you to do well, but doesn't really set you up for success. She breezes over important dates and things to know. In my class, she got behind on the teachings, which made doing the homework very confusing. The class average on the majority of tests was 50%.
In class, she expects students to have a strong grasp of concepts beforehand and often leaves problems incomplete, assuming we know how to finish them. Her homework assignments are incredibly difficult—so much so that even the tutors struggled to figure them out. The exams are even worse: some of the hardest and most complex I've ever encountered.
I took precalculus with Hong and she was amazing! Online homework was optional, so I was able to just get a book and do the paper homework. She allows you to check your homework with her before you submit it! Tests were very appropriate, homework not too long, and she cares so deeply about her students.
Prof. Hong runs a challenging yet rewarding class. Lectures are engaging, and the textbook is essential. For study prep, ChatGPT and unstuckstudy were super helpful. Overall, a tough but worthwhile course.
Professor Hong is caring and funny. BUT I did not like the lack of feedback on HW. If you want any feedback you have to go to her office hours and quite literally try to review every problem. Gives challenging material. Get prepared to put in a lot of hours studying on your own. Lectures are quick and feel rushed. I personally would not recommend.
Got behind on lecture since the start of the semester because she was making sure everyone was on the same pace. Although she assures students that they aren't liable for content that she hasn't taught (even on final). Gave feedback on HW on the last day of class. 2 tests and 1 final. She's funny. I would take her again.
She cares about students. I think she felt defeated this semester due to new state curriculum requirements. Class fell 3 weeks behind. DO NOT MISS A LECTURE, you fall behind. HW due dates where not clear. Learned it at home not in class. 65% of class failed and had a high dropout rate. I struggled to keep up due rushed curriculum.
