Class isn't finished yet, but, it seems that everyone likes him. He's all about working problems the entire class time. He moves around the entire room dividing his time equally. Very helpful with a very nice attitude! I don't think anyone would regret taking him.

Horrible. He makes errors a lot on the board while explaining things and unless you have someone else in the class that knows more than him you won't ever learn because he won't correct those errors. Statistics is definitely not his subject to teach.
I hate math sooo much!! but seriously... he made it as easy as it could be for me. He smiles all the time, is very smart and had a good way of presenting material. He is so sweet and he really cares that his students do well. =) I will definately take him again for pre calc in a few semesters.
Very nice professor. Although he may make a few writing errors on the board once in a while, they are only minor mistakes that don't take away from the lesson and his knowledge about Statistics. He is always willing to help and answer questions. Tests are very fair, as well as the curves! Has very neat handwriting too!
He doesn't really know how to teach statistics. Our very first class average was 40% because he screwed us by telling us that he will give all the forumlas on the test, but forgot to put most of them on the test day. With his curves, he is pretty reasonable, but even if you get an "A-" average on all your test, you will not get an A! Hes weird.
He doesn't teach and reads straight from the textbook. Yet, his tests are hard. He is pompous because he has a Ph.D. from Berkeley. Whoever hires this guy (check out his bad ratings from UC Irvine!) needs to be reminded to hire someone who could teach, not someone with a fancy degree!
He seems like a nice guy but I ended up dropping his class around the first test (and signed up with Hochwald the following summer). Dr Pham was consistantly making a lot of errors on the board during lectures. If you need stats, consider Hochwald - I'm glad I did.
not a very good teacher, but his class is easy. He considered an 80% A. woot woot! also, i got only 2 A's and 1 F on his test, but i ended up with an A in the class.
great math teacher... curves grades and tells you exactly what he expects no tricks on his exams either. highly recommened
Obviously, I was not amazing in mathematics. He made math seem so easy, and it was. His lectures were very clear and understanding. Amazing teacher. I have never had a math teacher so good in my life. I really liked him. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND HIM. :)
Gr8 Teacher!
Highly recommended!
I love him...
he is awful. he had never answered any questions. terrible. dont take him if u want to get an A.
the class is based on homework. so if you do ever single homework assignment then you should do fine in the class. just be ready to teach yourself or ask your friends to help you. his grading is the best and if you show him that you are trying he will pass you.
He was awful. If you ask him a question, he just repeats the same sentence over and over again. He makes it almost impossible to get a good grade. Don't take this class if you value your gpa.
He does not teach good, his lectures are not clear, he does not answer your questions... you can get CR for his class not more !
He is HORRIBLE!! If you ask him any questions, he will ask you to take out your calculator and find out the answers by yourself. All of his lectures are simply from the textbook, you can just read it by yourself. Quizzes are not the same as the homework he assigned, and tests are terribly difficult!
If you want to work very hard and still can't get an A, I recomment you to take him!He never gives you the answers of graph questions for the tests. When you ask him how to draw the graph,he just says "JUST Do IT!JUST Do IT!"I think he may not know the answer either.DON'T TAKE HIM!!
RUUUUUUUN!!
Since I took a non-college level class, this class was easy. However, it seems like he is not that great on upper level classes such as MATH 10 and MATH 2.
He's not easy by any means, his notes come from the book and his test come at you with stuff you've never seen. Terrible teacher! Most of the class gets C's And D's on his test, but they are only 40 % of your grade. He expects you to figure out everything your want to know on your own. No Help what so ever...
Unclear and assigns even-numbered problems in the book. Late in handing back classwork/homework, and doesn't provide the answer key to the homework problems so we can learn from our mistakes. Also doesn't allow calculators--scientific included--on tests, making it very difficult for students to get an A.
Easiest class ever! Quizzes were open book AND notes. A range was 85% up!!
i took his class for my first semester in ivc. he is poor in time management. one example is he ask you to do loads of classwork within ridiculous time. he never review in any homework. not helpful. HE CANNOT TEACH! DONT TAKE HIM.
he dosnt know anything, dosnt know how to teach, gives unbelievable amount of homework, never works with you just tells you that you should already konw the answer hes not helpful at all, i was taking math 253 and he acted like he didnt care about the class at all, all in all horrible teacher do not take him
OMG do not take this teacher. Math is one of my strengths, and taking this teacher made me not understand anything!! He doesn't answer any questions, doesn't go over homework or tests. If you have any questions, its best not to ask him. He really does repeat what you ask him and thinks that's supposed to help you! I suggest you don't ever take him.
WARNING DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. His test are impossible and lectures are useless. People get C and D on tests and his hw is only evens so that we cant check our work. out of 41 students in first two weeks there was only 10students left in the final day of class.
WARNING DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. His test are impossible and lectures are useless. People get C and D on tests and his hw is only evens so that we cant check our work. out of 41 students in first two weeks there was only 10students left in the final day of class.
DO NOT BUY THE TEXT BOOK! You rely solely on the notes he makes you print out and bring to class. There are 1 quiz and HW assignment per week. It takes police-style interrogation to get a question answered by him, but he's nice. He has a vietnamese accent and is a Berkeley graduate i believe. There are easier Stats classes though so don't take him!
Pros: 15% grade scale Cons: Unclear teaching, hard tests/quiz with some questions he hasn't even covered before, assigns a lot of HW
Took him Summer for Calc 3A. Although this class was very hard, i enjoyed is teaching style. Class had about 40 students first day and about 15 at the final. scale: 60%=C,70%=B,85%=A. 5 tests and final. numerous pop quizzes. every test was curved significantly. final was VERY long. hw 15%, quizzes 10%, final 25%. he's a nice guy.
i took him in summer 2009 and he is a very hard teacher! assignments done in class everyday are due at the end of class. his exams are impossible! you really need to rely on the book for help and his notes are ok but didnt help very much because questions he asks are very abstract from what he actually teaches :(
At first he was very hard, and confusing, but after you get use to his style, you'll do fine. Do all homework, try hard, don't skip any classes and you'll be fine.
so i took math 10 2yrsago, & it was probably one of the easiest classes i've taken. he's very straightforward about what he wants you to know for his quizzes/etc. at first i was intimidated by other ppl's ratings, but his mistakes don't have a negative impact on the material he's teaching, you can correct him. he's very approachable and nice!
He is not a good math teacher at all. FInds the hardest possible questions and assigns them as homework and puts them on the test, but the examples he uses on the board are teh easiest possible questions. He also talks like "Fwy Wice" and its impossible to understand sometimes. half the class is failing and those who arent already took the course!
Pretty hard class. More so because of the types of problems and the way he grades. Lots of hw, be prepared to spend the time on it. 15 point grading scale, so 85=A, 70=B, 60 is passing so that helps some. Only take him for math2 if your really good at math, otherwise you will fail.
He has a knowledge, he cover everything, he might be though but he teaches a lot of info,
Run away!!!
Run!! Run. Supper hard teacher.
Is this teacher going to fail everybody? Everyone in class is getting C's or D's on average. Regardless, he doesn't seem to care about our GPAs, so I dropped the course.
I took him last fall for math 2... he knows his stuffs.. and he teach pretty well.. I love the way he explained everything. but u need to put an effort on the homework. the homeworks help ur grades in that class.. not really recommend him if u never take any math classes before. this class need really good algebra and familiar with trig.. the final
Never have I had a professor more disengaged and disinterested in actually teaching the material to their students. Furthermore, he consistently makes mistakes that sometimes have a great adverse affect upon the understanding of the material. Unless you are prepared to become a completely ind student, do not take this prof or any of his classes
Pham's 24 class was no joke. Very very challenging course. He had in class quizzes nearly every week, rarely did he collect hw. But overall he forced you to learn the material. I am a pretty independent learner but if you require help/advice/tutoring from the instructor to succeed I would not recommend Pham. Off to UCI!!!
Class with this teacher is HELL!!!! RUNNNNNN BEFORE U DIE!!!!
In the beginning, the class seemed way too easy for me and he was really slow at explaining (which is something I wasn't used to). Towards the end the material was very hard and I had always aced math classes and this time I got a B mainly due to the fact that he actually GRADES the homework (which really sucks). I wouldnt recommend.
I took the summer 3B class with Pham. Although it went fast, he did appropriately cover material he found necessary, yet tested us on things that he didn't cover. All parts of the section were tested, even if they were not covered in class. Overall, he does know what he's talking about, but it takes a lot of work to do well.
He has pretty ok course. We take daily quizes, only sometimes he said no quiz. We are allow to take out 4 worst scored quizes. And if you did poor on a test, it will be replaced by 1/3 of the final is replaced. However, you have to study to get A or B
HIS CLASS WAS MY FIRST SEMESTER AT THIS SCHOOL. HAVE TO STUDY HARD TO GET A. BUT VERY HELPFUL FOR NEXT STEP COZ MATH8 WAS NOT MY GOAL. IF U TAKE MATH11,3A,3B AFTER MATH8, U SHOULD TAKE HIS MATH8. CLASS IS NOT EASY BUT FOR SURE YOUR MATHMATICS SKILL GOING UP
DONT TAKE IT!! He just read out of the book. does the examples and tells u to work on class work. He doesnt go over anything and when you ask him a question he just looks at you like your dumb kinda like you ether know it or you dont. He makes a lot of mistakes and it confuses you. I'm not sure he even knows what hes teaching
cant learn from him. has to strong of an asian accent. doesnt really teach well. the only good thing about his class is that up till an 85% is like an A 70% B 60% C 50% D and below F. so that can help you alot but not a great teacher. he does offer office hours and hes good with that though. wouldnt take him again though.
Very difficult, took calc 1 with castroconde. I spent about 3 hours a week and got a B. Then I had pham for Calc 2. I'm having to spend about 15 hours a week and have a C+. Around half the students dropped the class, but I really need it so I had to stay.
Worst prof I've ever taken. Every lecture he's ALWAYS making mathematical and conceptual mistakes, and yet gives zero partial credit on exams (he even makes mistakes on his solutions!) Never answers emails, and won't be helpful in office hours if you missed class(even for good reason). Class went from 50+ to 10 people, and not b/c of the subject.
I will never take any his class!Worst math professor I have ever met. I just finished his math3B in summer. We have quizzes every class, which included at least one chapter material. We had test every two weeks. All of quizzes, tests, exams were just hard! They were just hard!It was a summer class, please.
I couldn't understand anything he said because of his strong accent. He seemed to be disinterested in teaching and his lectures were often convoluted and all over the place as well.
He is a great teacher, he makes sure to stop periodically and make sure students understand the material. If you were to ask a question he would eagerly answer it for you. The quizzes that he assigns weekly are really helpful in making sure you stay on top of your studies. Give the oppurtunity I would take more classes with him.
Never have I had a professor more disengaged and disinterested in actually teaching the material to their students. DONT TAKE IT!! He just read out of the book. does the examples and tells u to work on class work.
Pham likes to brag about what kind of great reasearch and profiles he has, but yet he does not say anything when you ask a question. If you are enrolled in his class, make sure you know that you are not going to learn anything.
Very sloppy teaching style. Didn't have our workbork ready until a week after the first day of class. Almost all of his answers in the workbook were wrong and his excuse was "typo". Then he was missing a whole chapter in the book he printed for us! Very unorganized and not very helpful, I do not suggest this professor.
$30 workbook was missing a chapter and had a dozen incorrect answers in every chapter. No partial credit on 6 exams and final. No nonsense professor that powers through material efficiently as soon as class starts. No jokes, no stories, just math. Pretty good lecturer in that regard and uses tablet well. Other than his WB errors he's pretty good.
Horrid professor. I could barely understand what he says. The class is extremely difficult due to his inability to teach. Stay away from this professor at all costs.
Stay away unless you want to teach yourself. Very unclear about whathe is doing, and will not give credit unless you use his exact notation. Also, he only teaches for about 50% of classtime, and the rest is wasted on basic arithmatic. It takes him 5 minutes to multiply fractions so it is very easy to lose interest.
Ok i took this class online ! Super hard because he powers throgh info I was so over loaded with class work never felt like I could pass a class until I took this one .By grace I got a C don't know how? Really fast pace and he messed up on test several times and even got review question answer mistakes he made in math
he just teaches straight from the book. i remember we had a sub once (yeah, i know right? what?) and she taught better than he did the entire year. he doesn't have a straightforward answer to your questions and he's not very clear or helpful. avoid taking his class if you can.
He can't teach at all, has a strong accent, and messes up repeatedly whenever he does the problems. If you can teach yourself the material, go ahead and take his class. I received an A in both of his classes(353 and 253), no thanks to him. I recommend going to the math center if you need help instead of his office hours.
One of my favorite teachers. yeah, I agree his teaching isn't amazing, but he is truly preparing you for what high-level universities will be like. Instead of giving boring calculations and handing you an A, he makes you actually use your brain! To cut it short, Take his class if you value learning, stay away if you want to keep your GPA.
Took eight week 353. The class was very fast but Pham gives so many options to help students. Weekly test, but it breaks the material up. Gives lots of extra credit and truly cares about his class.
Very hard and goes over material way too fast, make sure to pay attention or you're going to be left behind
He's honestly not as bad as everyone says he is, atleast for upper division math. His tests are hard, and he doesn't always answer questions thoroughly, but this class is totally doable, and with hardwork, you can pull off a B, for an A you need to be inherently good at math.
Love this teacher! He truly cares about his students and does everything he can to help pass. Tests are a bit hard but he gives out a lot of extra credit opportunities. If you are falling behind, he is willing to go back and answer any questions.
He has 3 Degrees. Physics, Computer Science and Math. So he knows what he's talking about. If you're physics based, then he'll be able to clarify things in physics as well. If you study for the class then you'll get a B or better. If you don't do the problems in the back then it'll be hard to pass. Do all the worksheet and study for the quizzes
took calculus 1&2 honors with him and got an A in both. he is smart, nice and helpful. He is pretty flexible with homework due dates and exam dates.IDK about the regular class but it was a bit stressful for the honors classes but nothing u cant handle.A worksheet each week. and a few quiz every once a while. If you are ok in math you'll be fine.
I've had many teachers and this guy is one of the best I've had. He's nice, smart and reasonable, compared to other teachers who make you feel stupid if you ask easy questions. He has 3 degrees! His exams are reasonable and he gives you more time than needed. Study for quizzes, do the problems in the back and you can get an A like I did
Professor Pham was extremely helpful! I did not understand math before I took his class & though out the class I learned a whole lot! He teaches everything consecutively so it helps us students understand whats coming next. He's definitely very straight to the point, I would recommend him if you're interested in actually learning math!
His tests and homework were hard. if you want to keep your GPA, do not take him. study very hard to get an A for me
What is this comment that his homework and tests are hard? It's probably from a jealous co-worker. Seriously, I was a student of his and he is a great TEACHER. YES HE TEACHES. He's very memorable, too.
You will practice in his class, you don't need much time to practice at home, he is Excellent professor and Orgnaized
I'm not kidding when I say that Prof. Pham is the BEST math professor I have ever had! He explains things clearly and takes the time to make sure everyone understands the concepts. I love that we use his own workbook for the class. Very user friendly. All of you giving him a bad review didn't try. He is very intelligent and truly cares.
His 8 week classes are fast, so you have to make sure you can keep up, and be willing to put in some work. He does offer the math center (20 hours extra credit), and he WILL help you if you ask. Kayla is a big help to review with before tests. he grades differently too, since it is accelerated (60C or P). He is an AMAZING teacher, and very kind!
If you truly want to understand math from a neat and intelligent professor, Pham's your guy. If you want to get an A, you'll hate him. He grades homework for correctness so they're essentially take-home quizzes that really hurt your grade. Tests are hard but that's because the subject itself is advanced. Study haaaard and ask lots of questions.
Good teacher who is actually too nice
he is a very good teacher
He is a good teacher and gives pretty fair tests, but the quizzes and worksheets really end up hurting your grade. He grades tougher on those than the tests, so you'd have to put in a lot of effort on hw and studying regularly to get an A. He's a pretty nice prof, not extremely helpful when you have questions, though.
Professor Pham is the best, he is very kind, I took him for math 353, 253 and I got an A in both. He is very clear in his lectures. I would take him again if he teaches more math classes.
I thought the class was pretty easy. Yes he did go through it quickly, but that is to be expected! 2 classes condensed into one semester! He reviews often and the work can be repetitive, sometimes. Just show up and make sure you do the work and you'll be fine. Make some friends in the class and help each other out and ask questions, it'll help!
Best professor out there he honestly is the reason why I started loving math. I Highly recommend him .. He gives you study guides that are similar to the test so you'll do fine
One of the best Math professors out there! He's so smart. He is also very understanding and easy! As long as you do your homework and be willing to learn (not to just sign up to get credit and hope for an A,B). So many spoiled students blaming their profs for having bad grade. If you are not a Math student, spend extra time in math center, officehr
Took Dr. Pham's Math 353-253 class. It was fast-paced and there was a good amount of work that had to be done. The lectures and work were out of his workbook; the hands-on experience made the class less difficult. Tests are tough, but there are extra credit opportunities. Show up, do the work, ask questions, and you'll do fine. Would take again.
This class is indeed a tough one. But prof. Pham really wants you to understand everything. He gave us daily homework which is quite short and not graded. But the homework really helped so I would recommend you to do them. The overall grade depends on your final a lot but the final was easier than the usual tests.
This class is freaking tough and you're not going to pass without any sort of studying. Half of the class either dropped or failed. However, he's a great professor to learn from and I understood math sooo much better from him than I did from any of my other professors. Just be willing to put in the effort and DONT SKIP CLASS OR YOU'LL FALL BEHIND!
Great professor. Makes you do homework. Not an easy A. Learned a lot of stuff
i miss this class, future math students please take this class if you want to have a more proficient understanding of calculus. also all the negative reviews don't make any sense :)
Highly recommend him, he gives you review test that are similar to the test so you'll do fine if you study them.
Horrible professor, do not take him.
One of the worst professors at IVC. Granted that Math is not my strong suit but this professor made it unbearable. There were quizzes and homework everyday and tests every week. He told us that there will be one or two questions in your test that you won't be able to solve. If you ask him questions on how to do a problem he will reply just do it.
I took the accelerated course and it went great! He's an amazing professor I'm usually really bad at math but he really makes you understand math and he's always saying at the end of each lesson any questions which I love because it actually makes me want to ask questions i recommend him if you're looking for a good math teacher!
Super solid professor. He is very thorough. He teaches concepts rather than just throwing formulae at you. Pace can be hard to keep up with but he's so helpful during office hours. He helps you understand everything you need to know. As he says, all you need to do is practice. If you struggle he is very accommodating and wants you to succeed.
Professor Pham doesn't provide lecture notes or powerpoints so you have to study everything on your own. He does offer help if you ask and has online office hours for extra help. We are also using MyMathLab for homework which is a pain in itself. He's a nice man but I'm planning on dropping the class since I can't keep up with the homework :(
Pham is a really nice professor. My class also emailed him to push a test a day back because we did not understand the material and he did. But sometimes his homework is unreasonably harder that what he teaches. I usually received A's on my tests but on my final I got a D. He also taught us a new lesson the day before the final with no review...
Online class. He doesn't provide any lectures or any notes. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN!!! You can email him, but that doesn't help because he doesn't tell you how to do the problem. I'm good at math and this was ridiculous.
He gives us no notes hes terrible at explaining things (the people on youtube do it better) and i would not choose him unless you want to be miserable
Prof. Pham is pretty good. He knows his stuff, and explains things well. Tests are pretty tough, but he'll curve a bit or replace a grade. I probably could have done better, but 3B is a pretty tough class with any professor so I think my grade is justified. Would take again. As with any math class, get lots of practice and it's easier.
The best, but most challenging math Prof at IVC. To succeed, this class needs to be your bae. No surprises on tests, but the sheer volume of questions will kill you. I suggest looking at book examples before class, so you can pay attention during. Doesn't over-complicate or -generalize; he'll teach the book way, and then the better way.
Pham is one of the best math professors that I have ever had! Very straight forward and good at lecturing. Doesn't spoon feed, but it's college. Your professors shouldn't be handing you test questions and answers at this point. DO THE HMWK, come to lecture, and you'll be fine.
He is good professor but the only thing was that his test were hard however, he does offer extra credit which is nice of him.
Took him for Math124 and took him again for Math2. The level of difficulty for his class is harder than most other math2 courses because he pushes your knowledge to the limits. As the class went in deeper into the semester, the tests got longer and harder to finish. I respect him as a teacher because he is really smart and tests your knowledge.
It was manageable guys! Stop blaming the professor because of your own laziness and be more responsible for your own actions (or lack thereof). He was always happy to help. Simple and practical lectures. Fair grading. Read chapters ahead. Think conceptually. Ask questions. If you didnt get an A it was because you couldnt draw a simple cone.
Beware, Professor Pham doesn't provide lecture notes or power points so you'll have to study everything on your own, which can be difficult for a math class. There were quizzes and homework everyday and tests every week. He told us that there will be one or two questions in your test that you won't be able to solve.
I took his class for the accelerated trig & precal class. He is an incredibly bright person but he is a terrible professor. He doesn't teach concepts well enough for you to be tested on it, plus despite it being short classes, his tests are at least 60 questions long, and sometimes he would squeeze in a lecture after the test. Incredibly stressful
DO NOT TAKE HIS STATS CLASS. He is very unclear and unorganized during lectures. Even if you raise your hand and say something is unclear he doesn't try to help clarify in class he simply restates what he already said and then says what we is common sense. I would never take one of his classes again.
His teaching method is the worst. When we came across hard questions he wouldnt go thru or explain he would say things like do it yourself so you learn better!!! Like what? We are here to learn from him and he told us figure out ourselves??? Well then whats the point of coming to school? He will only explain simple questions which I can do myself
He gives out a sheet of paper with problems on them nearly everyday and a review for each exam. He allows a cheat sheet on the exams, front and back. He curves pretty much every exam. He also gives out extra credit. I'm beyond surprised by the negative comments because this class was a walk in the park. Just come to class and you're set.
Absolutely awful. Refuses to answer questions or even give hints. He laughs in your face if you make even simple mistakes, and refused to go over concepts the entire class was struggling with. If one or two students understood it, he decided that was enough. Made students explain lectures FOR him but wouldn't say if they were teaching it right.
DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR STATS! Professor Pham is very smart and assumes everyone in his class has prior knowledge in the subject. He is unclear when it comes to explaining things. He would often leave students questions unanswered and move on to something new. he does offer a lot of EC but you need it to pass the class. You've been warned!
Nice guy. Knows what he's talking about, but he's not a good teacher. If you need to take his class just know it will be a lot of self teaching. No textbook but you'll NEED to buy a work book ($25). Quizzes almost every class, no calculator on quizzes and for half of the test. No grade for homework, only tests/quizzes. Fast paced even for an 8 week
I suggest not taking the 8-week course for Trigonometry. Professor Pham is very smart, but expects you to be the same. At times you cannot understand the concept he is teaching you due to the fact that he is not a good teacher. Quizzes are every Tuesday's and Thursday's (5pts), 3 (50pt) exams, and a final (100pts). He drops the 2 lowest quizzes.
Professor Pham is one of the most intelligent men I've ever met, but not the best teacher. I took his 8-week trig/pre-calc fast track and it was the hardest thing I've ever done. However, nothing feels better than solving one of his proofing or modeling problems after trying for 20 minutes. Won't take again, but what I did learn will stick with me.
If you're not willing to put in 100% effort, do not take his class! You will, without a doubt, fail.
Great professor! He's really intelligent, but he's not the best teacher. Personally, I work well with accelerated math courses, so taking his 8-week Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus course worked well for me. But he doesn't explain concepts very well after he does a preliminary explanation, so you may have to go to the Math Center for more help if needed.
Very approachable and clear but fast paced, which should be expected in an accelerated class. His teaching style is straightforward, lectures are given right from his workbook. Every test including the final is curved. I really feel prepared for calculus because of Pham. He cares about his students and does his best to help you succeed in Trig.
This is a tough class, not necessarily because the material is difficult but because I didnt read the syllabus before registering. This is a PROBLEM BASED LEARNING class. Don't expect a traditional lecture where a professor walks you through a problem, you need to know your trig/algebra before starting. The dude's a genius though.
Super nice and intelligent. However, I also worked and had three other classes. Keeping up with this class was hard. He is super fast paced, will not explain problems, and this class was actually meant for people who have experienced trig and precalc before (I took 8 week trig/precalc). I have not so I won't hold it against him.
He is one of the best teacher's. He is not an easy teacher. But you can learn a lot from him with his teaching style. He will also prepare you for your next Math class.
Took him for the accelerated Math 124/2 course, he's a very nice guy but not the greatest professor. You are expected to know basic algebra/trig before you take the course, so beware. I took this course while working and taking 3 more classes, so if you push yourself you can do it. Use resources like the math center and study, you'll be good.
I took this class in the summer and it was fast pace. I've taken pre-calc in HS before so I expected this class to be somewhat the same but a little harder since it's a college course. He tries to teach calculus in a pre-cal class to prepare you for math 3a. That was something I found hard. This class is challenging for me to maintain a C.
horrible! he is aggressive to the student when approached with a question. His time management skill we extremely poor due to the fact he was late to class and ran over his time. Attending office hours didn't help due to him having poor teaching ability. This was reflected in averages on test scores HW is easy but test r nothing like the homework.
Pham is probably the best Math professor I've ever had. He's super accessible and really wants his students to learn the material. Lots of kids don't really show up/care for the class, but if you show up and participate in lectures you will get a lot out of his teaching. The class is hard, but if you put in the work, you'll pass
He is a good professor. He cares about your grade. however, he's homework might be easier than exams. You might need to work hard to get a good grade. But his final is easy if you do all the homework. make sure you understand all the homework since it may relative to the final.
This professor was mediocre at best- his incompetent teaching abilities are overshadowed by his vague and arbitrary grading style. For example, he's lazy at grading, creates exams that don't accurately reflect the material covered in lectures, and grades SOME quizzes; Homework is optional, his lectures are bland. Overall, self study to get at >B.
He is a really nice and brilliant teacher not only in math. But because hes too brilliant and he teaches lots of classes with different levels of math, sometimes he doesnt understand there are questions with some students who have poor math skill. So if you are a math students, you wont regret to take him, but if you are not, dont do it
Pham is a bad teacher. Lectures are vague, unclear, and error filled. If you are a STEM major, stay far far away from this teacher, as he will not prepare you for other classes. His tests do not reflect the lectures or homework at all, and you will do poorly on them if you do not self study the entire class. Do not recommend.
In my 2.5 yrs at a university, I've never had such a bad prof. When I'd ask a question, he'd often give an unrelated answer. I gave up asking him questions and had to ask a prof from my university. I learned betteer when I skipped and taught myself. It's easy for me to get A+ in my other univ. math classes but his style is TOO HARD. DON'T take him!
Even though I dropped his Calculus Honors class, it was because I was struggling with basic algebra. Overall he's a good instructor who gives detailed lectures and answers to specific questions. Meanwhile, take plenty of time to study hard outside of class so that you don't fall behind.
Professor Pham is a very nice person. His class is not easy but he curves your grade a LOT.
Prof Pham is really helpful. His lectures are quick-paced, but easily understandable. He gave notes to print and fill out to follow his lectures. There were 1-3 quizzes a week. The exams were on the harder side, but if you know the topic well, you should be able to ace it. There was also a lot of homework to do and you can easily get behind fast.
Unless you enjoy 2hr of straight lecture, plan on teaching yourself. Fortunately its not super hard to learn calc from a book. And if you think youre gonna do well on the tests- no youre not. Also takes a VERY long time to grade all assignments. (math3AH online)
Professor Pham was an incredibly difficult professor and made his classes really hard. I know Calc 2 isn't easy, but he acted like everyone already knew what he was talking about and did not seem to care about his students. It would have been nice to have a professor who really wanted to teach his students for the hardest Calc class I took.
He teaches well and gives good lectures, but gives out tests that are unnecessarily difficult. He grades very slowly and it is quite tedious when attempting to contact him which is nearly impossible. He shares very little contact with students which further makes it hard to predict what he would do for a test (for example, curving a test).
The main problems with the online class was it was hard to communicate him via email because he didn't always answer it. You really need to ask questions because the way he explains things is confusing at first. A lot of people messed around during lecture and didn't listen/ask questions so they class test average was poor. Gotta work for the A.
Professor Pham is good at adapting to COVID times. He is a very reasonable teacher and teaches everything that he will test/quiz you on. Pay attention to lectures/take notes and you should be good. He responds to emails and is very transparent with his class, no monkey business. Highly recommended!
He is probably one of the best instructors in math at IVC. He is knowledgeable to the nth degree. I not only learned the material, but a new way of thinking. His tests are hard, but fair. Perhaps Covid brought out tougher tests since open books and open notes were allowed. A graphic calculator is also allowed, and its use was encouraged.
Linear Algebra is the hardest class that I ever have take, so far. Abstract math happens to be Professor Pham's favorite class to teach, and it shows with his enthusiasm. Personally, I learned things in his class that made my brain hurt, but it was worth every headache. This is the third class I have taken with Prof. Pham - he is the best.
He is generally pretty funny and knows his stuff. He is patient even when the students miss certain concepts that are so fundamental I dunno how they got em wrong(jk
As a Math and CS major, this guy rocks. The best part is how flexible he is with his class. Want in-person? He does that. Want to just self study online? That is fine as well. Weekly take at home quizzes, with only two mandatory attendances which is the midterm and final. His exams for honors can be tough but non-honors is straightforward
Professor Pham is one of the best math teachers I've even had the pleasure in knowing. He goes beyond the norm and teaches what he calls "Street Math". He does separate the 'B's from the 'A's via his tests and makes one go the extra mile to earn the 'A', but if you keep pace and know the material you'll do fine.
Exams and Quizzes are straightforward, and are not graded harshly. I took this class over summer, and it was very easy to maintain a B. You would need to put a lot of effort for an A, but it is definitely possible as long as you stay on top of things. The professor is very nice and extremely approachable. Highly recommend taking DEs with him.
He makes algebra mistakes but it doesn't matter much as he still explains things very clearly
Professor Pham is by far one of the passionate lecturers I've ever had. Because I took this in the summer, there were a tiring 8 hours of lectures per week, but Pham made each hour engaging by giving real-life applications in engineering, physics, and chemistry. He cares deeply that students understand the coursework and is kind and approachable.
I love his lecture, and he explains everything really well. I took him during the summer, and I loved how he explained all of the problems. His homework is kind of hard because he wants us to understand what we learned. His exams are easy. If you really wish to learn, then take him.
here is one homework packet every week which takes a few hours and besides that every week there is either a take-home worksheet due on thursday or a quiz. He lectures well but tends to only go over easier examples than what is on the tests and hw. Overall not too hard but make sure to pay attention, do the hw, watch YT videos and go to the tutors
Tough math class, claims he is preparing you for calc 2. I believe him but his tests are incredibly tough, only after the first two did they start to become easy and prof starting giving us review sheets. Great lecturer, just the problems on his exams are incredibly tough, make sure you study and do the work and do them a lot, so the exams are easy
Professor Pham made the process of learning Calc 3 very straightforward. His lectures are very clear and he makes sure that the material is clarified. One thing I would watch out for is his tests. Make sure that you practice and iron out any confusion before his tests; brush up on earlier material too. Doing so will help your grade tremendously.
my goat
Super cool guy; great at lecturing and cares about his students. Pretty funny, too. However, he often misinterprets questions asked by students during lecture. (This shouldn't be a problem if you're an attentive listener and take notes; his lecture pace is quite comfortable.) Use office hours if you're struggling, and don't skip lecture.
Take this class if you want a low-stress intro to data science. Weekly homework is to follow along in his lectures then complete short coding assignments using what you just learned. Really loved that this class wasn't too much work but allowed me to explore more deeply the topics that I was most interested in. OH are in person and online.
professor pham's lectures were straight to the point and he always found ways to make it interesting. however, he tended to only go over easier problems for certain topics and never explained how to do the harder ones. he also put problems on the tests regarding topics that he barely skimmed over or didn't put on his study guides.
Enthusiastic about the material - I just would of preferred being online - I find these types of courses students leave a lot to be desired with class implicit bias - I don't want to be watching my back between the teacher and the students. I can read the book and do the homework myself at home. Class had a police alarm button. This is an elective.
i understand that this course is difficult especially in the summer, but professor pham did not do a good job with going over the material. the homework is fairly easy and follows the lectures but the questions on the tests are so much harder and barely taught in depth. the exams take up about 75% of your grade too with no curves or extra credit
Nice lecture and explain concept very well, the examples are easy to follow, homework is kinda alot for taking it over the summer, but learn a lot from it. Tests are fair, do your homework and review the examples given in lecture, then you will do good on the tests.
Avoid at all costs. Extremely fast paced, rude, and difficult. Has quizzes every week, and insists on teaching the hardest material. Is egotistic, and gives cancerous tests. Teaches material from higher math classes for no reason, and rushes through material so no one has a chance to learn. Take it with someone else.
If you want to keep your sanity, take someone else.
He claims to be preparing you for future classes, which while true, makes this class itself so much harder. First exam, 75% of the class failed, 2nd one 50% did, most people dropped out before 3rd exam. His lectures are good, but his HW and Exams are completely different and way harder than what was taught. Very hard weekly quizzes and no reviews.
to be fair i did not put an insane amount of effort into the course but his lectures are barely strung together and his advice boils down to "just think harder" which is infuriating to hear after I spent 30 minutes thinking about a problem before asking him for help.
DON'T LISTEN TO THESE OTHER REVIEWS. Professor Pham is a sweetheart. He's very fast paced in lecture and can come off as a little intimidating, but just go to office hours and it's so much better. He speaks twice as slowly, he genuinely wants you to understand the material, and he'll give you insights into what the next exam will have.
Horrible. The tests are extremely difficult and nothing like you learn in class. The tests are weighted extremely high too so even getting a B takes you down so much. Rude, arrogant, and mean. Gives out extremely difficult reviews for the exams which makes you want to rip out your hair. I studied like a dog just to maybe end up with a B. Avoid him.
Pham is a great prof! Calc 2 is obviously not an easy class so don't expect to have an A handed to you, his tests are very fair & make you work for your grade. Alternating in-person & take-home quizzes each week. 4 tests & a final. Make sure to go to his office hours!
decent professor,
PHAM IS GENUINELY THE GOAT FRFR. His lectures are clear and easy to follow. I genuinely don't know why he is labeled as a tough grader since as long as your work shows that you clearly understand the idea behind each problem he'll grade generously even if you forget a negative or do some algebra error pham will be nice. He is also very caring.
I've taken Professor Pham for the past 3 semesters, and each class with him has been better than the last. He has great lectures and is easy to reach out to outside of class. His exams are a little challenging, but if you understand the concepts from the lecture and textbook and reach out to him, they are much more manageable. THE DERIVATIVE
Cool professor. As a procrasinator, I still somehow did pretty well on the exams. I recommend having a group of ppl (prbbly discord) to share hw solutions with. Knowing how to do hw problems gets you the A in this class since exams are pretty close to what is on the hw unlike what other ppl are saying. Dont be afraid to ask questions! The derivative
I LOVED Pham! Make sure to stay on top of the homework or else it WILL pile up. I felt that his exams were very fair (study the review guides that he provides instead of redoing HW problems) & make sure to attend his office hours for extra clarification. He's super helpful & kind and I wish I had room in my schedule to take another class with him.
Professor Pham is a great professor. He teaches really well and is very fair with homework, quizzes, and exams. He's funny in a way that the humor relates to the lecture itself, but he doesn't make too many jokes to save time. He gives great study guides which are very similar to exams, and he gives a lot of partial credit.
Take Pham if you genuinely interested in learning. He is a kind of professor that answers "well, think about it" when confronted with a direct question. He says that not because he doesn't care about you, but because he wants you to use your brain, and if you are not used to do it, don't take the class. It is hard but very rewarding.
As an engineering student from Purdue University, let me tell you: Dr. Pham teaches so well it made the class seem easy. The detail that he goes into while remaining straightforward has helped me retain the information and use it in my classes back at school. Study Guides are good, test = hw, know things conceptually for quizzes not just memorize.
I took Pham in Spring 2023 for Integral Calculus (MATH3B) and in Fall 2023 for Linear Algebra. He is absolutely AWESOME!!! His lectures are great and he explains concepts very well and clearly, step by step. He is very kind and frequently pauses for questions. Exams are fairly straightforward as long as you do the homework and study lecture notes!
The professor does a good job of explaining the material. Linear Algebra is a tough concept to grasp but his lectures and homework making learning it effortless. The final exam was tough for me but as long as you do well in previous quizzes and exams you should be fine.
Prof. Pham is a real one.
Professor Pham is really good at explaining these core mathematics concepts, I would highly recommend taking his classes if you are looking to truly understand the material. Great for STEM majors.
Professor Pham teaches this class very well, the lectures are put together in a way that makes you think. Actually do the homework, and fully understand each problem. I struggled for the first exam, but that is because I did not anticipate it to be as difficult as it was.
I don't understand what this guy is about. The class only has a stats prereq. It is supposedly designed for people who are completely new to programming - which he reaffirmed. I was having difficulty in the class, I go to his office hours, and he says drop the class, learn programming, and then come back. Bruv, you are getting paid to teach me.
Good professor, he does not give a lot of homework and no need to have computer science skill to learn this class, he will teach everything you need for his assignment, is so relaxed in his class. Whenever I stuck, there is always answers in his recorded lectures.
If you ABSOLUTELY enjoy math, he is one of the best professors out at IVC that will help challenge you and deeply understand the concepts. He is adept at lecturing since he is extremely knowledgeable on the concepts and organized with his work. His class is not meant for an easy A but he is willing to help you if you attend his office hours.
Weekly quizzes are easy and based on lectures' examples. The tests are extremely difficult and often do not reflect what the study guide or HW cover. I got 5 on AP Cal AB in HS and about 95% from Math 3B last sem but couldn't handle his exam's difficulty. If you are taking his class, I recommend going to his office hr regularly and understand HW.
Difficult grader. Class average for the final in Linear Algebra was a 56%, and the highest grade was a B. Resentful and rude at times. Berates students for asking questions that he doesn't think are smart. His only redeeming quality is that his lectures are (mostly) clear and straightforward.
I think that this class is generally easier than MATH3AH, Pham is an amazing teacher, though a bit rough during the first half of the semester. Once you enter the spirit, the second half is a piece of cake. There will be lots of homework but it's always doable and interesting, if you do all the homework, you get an A.
He's very passionate about what he teaches, you'll never catch him without a smile on his face as he's lecturing, and his lectures are as understandable as they are engaging. My only issue with Dr. Pham is that he makes his tests near impossible to complete in time. Fortunately, the final was doable, there was less of a time struggle.
Prof. Pham's lectures are engaging and make even tough concepts like linear algebra accessible. Do the homework, use resources like Unstuck ai, and you'll be golden - his exams are challenging but fair.
Incredibly difficult professor, I took DEs over the summer, and found the content easy. But when it came to the tests, they were impossible. Also, when I asked questions, he told me to work out the problems on my own rather than helping, which was ridiculous, it's literally his job. Class avg and medians always hovered around 60% post curve.
Easiest professor of my life. I don't know what the others are talking about the freest honors!
Math24H and Math26 were both extremely challenging. His exams in these classes were mainly based on the harder homework problems and others where you need to think deeply. He grades relatively harshly on exams even if you are close/show sufficient work. Nevertheless, I've still learned and retained the most by taking him. Thank you, Professor Pham.
Super chill yet contentful introduction to data science in R. Zoom lectures are once weekly and recorded. Great way to learn R over a semester without breaking a sweat. Final project was a fun way to put everything together by doing a report on anything you are interested in and can find a dataset for.
I love you lan pham
Professor Pham explains the material clearly with plenty of examples, making it easy to understand. He gives in-person quizzes that impact your grade, so staying prepared is key. Test reviews before exams count as extra credit, and exams are similar to the reviews. Calc 2 is tough, but with him, you can pass while truly learning. Great professor!
Homework is hard as hell, tests are a breeze compared to them, but that's pretty good I think. Lectures often seemed unhelpful. Class seems like unwinnable slaughter war until class is over and W curve. Hardest and most confusing class I've ever taken, but man the curve is like magical.
Pham has extremely good lectures, almost everything is clearly laid out and easy to understand, however when you ask a question about the lecture there is a good chance he'll tell you to think about it and move on so hope to god you get it the first time. Other then that his hw is usually harder then the exam so as long as you do the hw you'll pass
lan pham my GOAT. i saw him at phoholic one time
THE GOAT!!!
Do not take!!! The content it self is not hard. However he gives unmanageable homework and NO STUDY GUIDE FOR ANY EXAM. So the 200+ homework problems you did. Thats your study guide. weekly quizzes are just as hard as the exams too. He curves but his averages are still very low (less than 50 percent) Save yourself. Don't register for this class.
As a math major, I dropped early on because I didn't like how he teaches it like a hardcore physics class instead of a math class. If you are a Gupta groupie, you know the difference. Might be a good fit if you are an eng or physics major who wants the experience of a UC weeder class with D average exams. Curves, but harder than it needs to be.
Every time I cross the parking lot to go to this class I pray I get obliterated by a car.
His grading criteria is not the one in the syllabus, you don't really know whats going on or how much each exam is worth until you take it.
This is the hardest math class I have taken in my life, the lectures are extremely confusing (goes into every single detail and teaches math like physics) and homework are not based off of what he teaches. There are hard quizzes every week, no study guide and no posted notes. Don't take
This class is not for the weak, coming from someone who's good at math. But there is a curve—a letter grade curve at the end—and this class really transcends your math to another level. If you want an easy A, don't take this prof, I only recommend him if you're up for the challenge and, preferably, good at math.
His lectures are decent, but he is not good at answering questions. His exams should be simple/moderate as long as you DO THE HOMEWORK and have a deep understanding of the topics, rather than just memorizing. A lot of the people who complain about him are bums that either don't lock in on the homework or skip his lectures—average exam scores: 70.
You need to make this class a priority if you want to do good. Go to office hours and ask questions as he wants you to understand the material well. He's great at explaining concepts. DO THE HW. There's a lot but naturally that becomes your study guide as test questions are based off them. Every test was curved. Amazing prof.
He's teaches concepts well, but this class was very difficult. Show up to lectures, do office hours, and don't fall behind in the class. The exams average score was always around a 50-65%, so be prepared to lock in. He curves your final grade by a few percentage points, so a 77% could be rounded to a B. A class not for the weak
This class was probably the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. Pham is a good professor and explains things well but there is SOOOOO MUCH homework; Exams will demoralize you but towards the end there is a big curve and you will definitely pass if you put the work in.
Many people dropped, class averages were below 60 and theres weekly quizzes as hard as the exam. The amount of homework is tremendous and unless youre a part time student and have no social life/job outside of this the class is pretty unmanageable. Its time consuming and the professor isn't the nicest
Great class, lectures are definitely complex and difficult, but they give you a good idea of what to expect for exams. Generous grader, and gave a 10-point extra credit/curve on some of the tests. Homework is around 30 problems per week. Funny guy as well.
Prof. Pham truly cares for his students. This course is challenging, but he makes it manageable. Absolute goat.
