Young and new to the university. As a professor, I think he needs a little more experience, but he is helpful and available for students. He's even funny from time to time. The readings he requires are really good. I enjoyed the class.
I disliked this class with a passion. The tests were written poorly, the teacher is very closed minded and the grading is too hard for a 100 level class. If you ask for help he tells you your problems are in your head. The online quiz and assignments are always failing. Do not take this class.
He required reading out of the textbook almost weekly but then the tests were taken strictly from lectures. No one knew what to study for the test, it was poorly written, and then he did was not willing to disregard the poorly written questions. He is a new teacher and cannot keep the class under control.
I was not overly impressed with him. I LOVE sociology and was expecting a lot more. There was a lot of work in the beginning of the semester, but almost none at the end. Readings were not pertinent to tests, but were quizzed each week (very frustrating). Student and teacher frustration could be felt during every class period.
He is a good teacher, he is new and is still learning how to keep the class under control. If you do the readings (which are very interesting) the quizes are a piece of cake (open book also) and then the test is easy as long as you review basic terms and slides from class (as long as you attend and understand what the slides mean). I learned a lo
It is a fairly tough class as far as quizzes and tests. There is not much negotiating room on answers on tests. He is a very nice guy, but I just had a couple of bad experiences with negotiating with him. Don't let that stop you from taking the class. He is a new teacher--still learning so cut him a bit of slack. Overall, I would say my experi
this is a new professor. so.. he doesn't have it all together yet. this past semester was his first time teaching his own way. tests are only on lecture, the book is only used for open note online quizzes. it wasn't hard, but id take soc from a more experienced professor.. he is nice though. good guy.
Really interesting discussions. Basic Sociology but I still learned a lot.
Was quite excited to take this class but very disappointed with teaching. Attending is a complete waste. Often, most of class is taken up by irrelevant discussion. Ties to cram important information in the last 5 minutes since he wastes the rest of class. A supersenior friend who’s a soc major highly recommends taking this class from a better prof.
Pretty good teacher. He's a nice guy, and it's an interesting course. Quizzes are really easy, especially if you read the chapter first. Lectures necessary for doing well on the test - take notes!
Very interesting class. Made me think about a lot of different things. Tests are specific but he gives you a study guide. Study lecture notes. He is very smart and nice and will answer all your questions. Get his help on the paper!
Erickson is really helpful, he wants you to succeed. He's also pretty entertaining, and I enjoyed class. Tests are pretty easy, if you study you'll do well on the tests. The paper is a beast though, and pretty pointlessly hard.
Really enjoyable class, he really has a desire to help, go to his office and talk to him and you'll feel good about the class. Does a good job of making it interesting. He's younger, though, and so less experienced if thats a problem for you.
Cool class. The readings are very interesting and classroom discussions were entertaining and at times humorously heated. At times the discussions were good examples of what we were learning but very long and drawn out. Entertaining but we got the point 30 minuets before. Fun teaching style.
He's an ok professor. He's really nice but it's hard to pay attention to his lectures. They can get pretty boring. His grading scale is quite easy and its not a bad class. The paper you have to write is a pain but not horrible. If you just want a good and easy grade, then take it from him.
He's a funny, nice guy, but the class itself wasn't that great. Seemingly pointless lectures, but the textbook is easy to read and interesting enough. A few of the class readings are actually pretty interesting.
All about managing risk through insurance and tax law. Not at all what I was expecting. And the class is dull as all get out. He basically just reiterated the readings. Made it really hard to want to go. Too bad really. He's a really nice guy, and super flexible about due dates and such.
He's a good teacher and a very nice guy, but his lectures could drag on at times. He likes to include a lot of class discussion. He is very willing to help with application of ideas and the paper, and it is an easy course if you just attend class and understand the basic concepts.
I have a natural interest in people and this class was thus very interesting for me. I like Lance a lot. As written below, his lectures can get boring. Even though reading the book is not required, I'd recommend it because it's way good. If you put a lot into the class, you'll learn a ton about sociology in general. I'd recommend this class.
Not too hard. The material is pretty interesting. Prof. Erickson can be boring sometimes but he means well and has his students in his best interests
I really enjoyed this class, it was my favorite of the semester. Erickson was funny and made the material to understand. Easy class if you read the textbook and attend class. 1 midterm, group assignments, short paper and a final. Plus points for inclass questions and attendance (easy points). Highly recommend, So interesting!
Really funny, tests were easy, homework a breeze... No reason to not get an A in this class. Some students will try to debate terms and their definitions - just ignore them, their logic will only confuse you. Enjoy his humor, don't take offence.
Class was not too hard. Prof.is funny and he made the subject interesting. The book is great as well and I enjoyed reading it.
His class is really fun. He is funny and has pretty good jokes. Don`t take offense, he tells embarrasing stories about himself, too. I liked being in class, but sometimes the lecture can get confusing. The test whatsoever is kind of hard, espeically for internationals, based on the grades.
Great professor. Can get by without the expensive textbook as long as you always attend class and take freakishly good notes. Lectures were SUPER good and informative. You get that "hey that's actually true isn't it." thing going quite a bit. Enjoyed his lecture on the marriage meat market. So fitting for byu :)
Professor Erickson is great! His lectures are interesting and very informative. You can get by without the textbook. Tests are easy, assignments are easy, and you get points just for going to class and answering questions with your iclicker. Great class!
Lance was my favorite teacher at BYU so far. His class was amazing, and it helped me realize that I might even want to major in sociology. He is way funny, makes class interesting, and tells good stories. He is really helpful. The textbook is great- you could probably do okay without reading it, but I LOVE it! It's SO interesting. Take this class!!
I liked Lance a lot. The class is super interesting (and beats the heck out of the beginning Anthropology classes) and I have learned a lot of things that I can apply outside of school. The work is pretty easy, just stay up with the chapter reading and get the few assignments passed in. Take from Lance, he is pretty funny and really down to earth.
Funny guy. Makes it interesting. Really not too difficult of a class if you just do the assignments and take notes.
He is a great teacher. He is pretty funny and teaches the subject well. It will make you think about life from a new perspective. You don't really need to read the book much, but it is fun to read anyways. The first half is better than the second, but it is all better than psychology. It is not very difficult.
Professor Erickson is such a nice guy! He's so willing to help you, but only if you ask for it. Sometimes classes get a little hard to pay attention to, but at the same time, some of the topics are very interesting. The TA's are great, just make sure you go to the review sessions and go to class.
A very easy and interesting class. Two exams and one paper. Both relatively easy.
Interesting class, not very difficult if you show up every day. Sometimes I didn't agree with his views, but it wasn't hard to understand what he talked about. Not a bad class.
Professor Erickson was such a cool guy. He brings interesting viewpoints to class and makes you think. This class changed the way I look at society, loved it. 2 tests, 1 essay = CAKE.
So long as you show up to class and read the book you will likely get atleast 1n A- in the class. He's hilarious and puts more than enough time to each of his students if you just ask. Great guy, easy class, recommended if you need the credit.
This class was really easy. Proffesor Erickson is really nice and doesn't try to overwork you. The class consisted of reading all 10 chapters of the book(super easy read),1 Midterm, 1 essay, 1 final and 5 assignments. Got an A easily definitely a fun class. The tests are way easy if you were paying attention. Go to test reviews overall great class
Course is well-organized. Complete the mini-assignments on time! Go to the TA's office hours weekly and you'll do fine. Pay attention in class and ask questions!
Cool guy, terrible class. Unorganized. Everyone learned everything from the TA. I don't remember anything from the class, I just wrote what the TA told me to write into STATA. Take it from someone else!
Take this class from someone else if you can. The TA did all the work. He believes in trial and error as the best teaching method, which makes for some really frustrating assignments. No rubric and hardly any instruction, but will dock points because you didn't guess what he wanted you to do.
An A is possible, but be prepared to set aside around 4 hours weekly for homework. STATA isn't too bad,if you need help with the syntax both Lance and the TA are really helpful. I don't recommend missing class or skipping the mini-assignments(even though they're worth barely anything) they build on eachother and prepare you for the exam.
Here is your chance to be bored and get a C.
He's a terrible teacher. He doesn't teach anything useful in the class and we never know what he wants. Tests are poorly written.
I learned a lot in this class. There are not a lot of assignments so you need to do well on the few he has. Tests are completely essay form. Nice man
Lance is a really good teacher and I loved SOC111 ( I'm a soc major so I am biased) However, a lot of people didn't like him, but that's because they were so one-minded. DO NOT TAKE SOC CLASSES IF YOU ARE NOT OPEN-MINDED. One of my classmates posted a rude comment about Lance, which made me so angry, it was so unfair, because he's an amazing teache
Made an introductory sociology course far too difficult. As a senior studying microbiology, and with many humanities classes under my belt, there is no reason that I should be struggling to keep a B+ in a 100 level class. Tests are ambiguous and poorly written, and with 500 points in the class, every point counts. Take someone else!
I'm a Junior minoring in Sociology and I completed this intro class last (ironically). I can honestly say this class had the most confusing layout of any of my other sociology classes. Reactions were graded harshly. Tests were completely ambiguous and poorly written. In his defense, he hasn't taught this class in about 6 years so he is learning.
3 Tests all MC, if you come to class & read you'll do fine - they are not tricky and usually bumps the class average up. 12 Short papers due weekly - put some effort into it and you'll get 100%, 2 are dropped. I liked the way he taught. The course opened my mind and gave me new perspective. NOT A HARD CLASS. I spent 2hrs/week on homework &reading
Very kind and understanding, super nice guy and a great class, very discussion oriented and he is very patient with questions. Tests are harder than you would anticipate, run through the review sheet with him to make sure you know what you're supposed to, take good notes, slides aren't posted, run through writing assignments with TAs beforehand.
Lance was a great sociology professor! His tests were derived directly from the book and the lectures so there aren't any surprises. Put some effort into your reactions and you will be fine. Super easy class, never did the reading until a few days right before the test.
Lance is my favorite professor that I have! He's such a kind man and is so willing to explain things in further detail and help you with anything you may need outside of class. He's a great professor - hilarious, personable, engaging, and great at explaining things. Take sociology from Erickson! I'm considering switching my major because of him!
Great professor! Very understanding and willing to help to any need that students may have. His grading criteria is very clear and lectures are very discussion oriented. He expects you to come prepare to talk about what you think on the readings. You get full points for attendance if you go at least to 80% of the lectures. Take SOC111 from Lance!
Lance is a great guy, the kind of guy I'd want to invite over to my house for dinner lol. I really enjoyed his class. He got through all of the course material without ever rushing the class. The weekly reactions are nothing to stress about and the tests aren't long and are reasonable.
I really enjoyed this class. Lance was good at listening to opinions and explaining himself. He made me very interested in sociology. The weekly reactions were hard at first, but got easier as we went along.
Professor Erickson is a really great guy. The class is hard to get used at first if you've never done sociology but he does a good job making it relevant. There are weekly assignments and quiz questions throughout the class, so you have to stay on top of things and attend class to do well. His tests aren't hard if you study the vocab from the unit.
If I could say one thing about Dr. Erickson it would be that he CARES. He truly wants you to do well in his class and he is very available outside of class. He was willing to bend over backwards for our class and was extremely understanding. I loved taking his class and would recommend him to anyone interested in sociology.
Lance is such an interesting dude, like the reviews before me state, the reactions were hard at first but easier as you went along. As you start out in the class a lot of people can agree that it's quite boring. But the further you go into the course, the more interesting it gets.
A researcher pretending to be a professor. He should be working in a lab or some place that requires minimal human interaction let alone teaching.
Class wasn't super hard (especially if you skim the reading and go to review sessions) but there are only a handful of things in the gradebook. Weekly essays can be confusing. And it should really not be 1.25 hours long. But Lance is funny and I learned a lot. This class made me think, even though I already had a very liberal-minded education.
Erickson is my favorite professor and this has been one of my fav classes, and I'm not even a Soc major. The class was incredibly easy and he is so chill and funny. Weekly papers are short and get easier throughout the course. You get full attendance if you show up 75% of the time. If you have to take Soc 111, take it from him.
His lectures were not very well organized and honestly it was really hard to stay awake. every friday there was a writing assignment due and they were really hard and complicated.
he is a really nice guy and i genuinely enjoyed sitting and listening to his lectures in class but the tests are really confusing and hard and the essays each week are graded very hard also.
Lance Erickson is the worst teacher I have ever had. I'm a senior, so I've had my fair share of teachers and no one comes close to this guy. He has NO idea what he is doing. Every time I sat down, I bonded with some random person over the fact that this was our least favorite class, we had no idea what was going on and he just absolutely sucks. Run
If you are required to take sociology, I would recommend completely switching your major and career choice before I recommended taking this class from Lance Erickson. Class was the biggest joke and the only reason people show up is because there are in class quizzes. If it weren't mandatory, no one would show up. Total shmuck. Peace out Lance.
The professor Is very layed back. (except about masks) Lectures are really boring. You have 1 assignment every week and then 2 mid terms and a final. Go to the reviews to the tests, because they are basically word for word of the tests. He was a good professor, I just wasn't interested in socially and took it as a GE.
Must be a mind reader to pass this class. He has a hard time dumbing down material and wants you to be "intuitive" about the assignments, but doesn't teach you how to do that. He expects you to learn more in the prereqs than you actually do. He wants you to do it his way but won't teach you what that is. He isn't specific in assignment prompts.
If you did well in 307 you'll do great here. His grading criteria is not always clear, but the TA will help you if you go to her. It's was hard but I really learned something new each week and he pushes you to really understand the material instead of just copying interpretations. That's what I liked about it. Labs take awhile.
I personally didn't love SOC111, but that has noting to do with Professor Erickson. I thought he was funny and a great teacher. He knows a lot about the subject and although we have differing political views, I didn't feel like he taught biases in class. Great class for a GE. TA reviews were super helpful to the tests.
Very impactful! You can tell he really cares for all of his students (and loves Stata!). Yes, the class isn't the easiest, but everything hard he has the students do has a reason. There is a textbook but he just had us use an online copy of it that he gave us access to for free. Prof. Erickson is one to take if you want to learn a lot!
Hard class, tough grader for sure, but he and the TA were super accessible. Labs took a long time, and I definitely recommend working in groups / learning from each other and helping each other figure things out. Don't skip class! You need the lectures.
Clear requirements and expectations for the assignments and lectures. The tests are straightforward. There are in-class quizzes to help record attendance. He brings up topics tactfully and it was an inspirational course
Erickson was awesome. Obviously the class is hard and he can be a bit vague at times but he genuinely cares and the class is seriously not as hard as the reputation it has. He really wants to help you so definitely reach out! He's also awesome with extensions if needed. Take a class from him!
During the class, I didn't like it a ton. The lectures were sometimes boring and the weekly write-ups were graded harshly. The tests were also super specific. But I got into a rhythm and by the end of the class, it was ok. Now, I use my knowledge from this class all the time. It might sound cheesy, but it's changed how I see the world honestly.
Very interesting class, he cares a lot about his students.
Dr. Erickson's papers were incredibly difficult and his test questions obscure. In addition, he had trouble getting through lectures despite the class being 75 minutes long. When he asked questions during lecture he seemed to be looking for specific answers, and many of these questions were inappropriate to ask in a classroom setting.
Not going to lie, Dr. Erickson grew on me. His lectures can get boring sometimes but if you really listen, you can learn some pretty cool stuff. There are 3 exams (2 midterms, 1 non-cumulative final). You have a writing assignment due every week on Friday. Just pay attention in class (I didn't really) and you could get an A.
Course was pretty clear and straight forward. There are few things that you are graded on.
The class was not too hard. It has very little homework (1 assignment a week). The tests are not too hard either. Make sure you listen and follow guidelines or else you will receive a lower grade. There aren't many assignments so do them on time because you cannot submit late work. It is a very interesting class and Dr. Erickson is awesome.
I really liked how open-minded Professor Erickson is. His lectures are super interesting, and his only assignment is writing a one-page paper each week. My only complaint is that his tests were pretty hard for me but I barely studied and never read the textbook. He also will give you 50 points as long as you don't miss 7+ days. Super nice guy.
There was a written assignment every week and if you follow the instructions you should be fine. Sociology was such a foreign concept to me and it made the class a little bit more difficult but if you go into the class open minded you should be fine.
He is very liberal and tests are very foreign. I wouldn't recommend taking the class in general.
This class is hard, but Dr. Erickson does a great job of teaching and making sure you actually understand the material. There is a lab due each week that is hard, but the TA's are SO helpful and make it doable. There is a midterm and final, both of which are open book, open note, open everything--still time-consuming though. Highly recommend!
Love Dr. Erickson! He really cares about his students and genuinely believes in what he teaches. Addresses controversial topics, but respects other viewpoints and encourages people to think for themselves. Relates content to scriptures a lot. Teaches with activities and funny stories. This class has made me a better person. Lots of reading, though.
Dr Erickson knows what he's talking about, but he's not good at teaching it. His lectures were confusing and meandering. His answers to student questions were often unhelpful. And on the labs, expect to get points taken off for stuff you didn't know you had to do. My main tip? Visit the TA, and they'll explain it better.
Does not care about accommodations, won't give straight answers, TA's didn't give any help and always said to ask a peer. You could tell his political stance and it always bled into the lesson. He doesn't care if you lost a loved one (I did), still have to go to class. I really hated this class even though I liked this subject previously.
I was probably a very annoying student for Dr. Erickson, but despite that, he was super respectful to me and genuinely cared about what I thought. The course design is simple and the exams are very doable. If you just show up to lectures, do the reading, and go to the TA reviews, you will be just fine in the class.
Holyyyyy he was horrible. I had him last semester and it was my last semester at BYU. NOTHING made me want to leave more than this class. He grades so weirdly- he seems to have OCD or just likes to be mean and condescending to students. He likes to be smarter and I got some of the most rude emails from him. DO NOT TAKE FROM HIM! RUN AWAY. SO BAD.
I personally didn't learn too much in class, and there was never a clear answer on questions asked from neither the teacher or the TA's. None of them were helpful. I received a few rude emails from the teacher and he seems very condescending and non accommodating. Exams did match the criteria very well from what you learn in lectures.
