Good guy, very helpful. Really wants you to pass with a good grade. Quizzes can be tough, but he truly listens to feedback. Class is somewhat dry and a PowerPoint Presentation is the final, but still take Lancie if you have to take the class.

Class is useless at times, but you can get some good out of it. Quizzes can be tricky but he always curves. Take this class to bring up your GPA.

Boring, but if you have to take computer, take him. He knows what is fair and unfair. on one test he curved an extra 40 pts.

Good teacher, Easy quizes and projects. Requires you answer a discussion section for each chapter which is comprised of terms. Easy.

Loved this guy. It's been a few years, but if I remember correctly, the class was more helpful than I thought, and discussions were fun. Take it to get an easy A (just do the work!) and get your resume up to par.

Good stuff, open book, quizing is simple, attendance policy deff. Overall okay, not hot. lol

Enjoyed the class and final research project. open book pre test and closed book quiz for each chapter. Excel homework assignment took some time.

Lancie is an awesome teacher and comp fluency is a great course. i learnt a lot about computers and technology. class has 4 projects including a youtube video and website.

I enjoyed Professor Affonso's computer fluency class this summer. He provided hands on workshops on using new technologies and his lectures were never boring

Take Dr. Affosno - this is def a great class for all majors and he will show you to use cool technology like google voice and how to find internships/jobs.

Good professor - knows a lot about really cool free and useful software - fun class -be sure to show up for class as he will call on you to do a short presentation in class after a missed class. most quizzes were online (open book) before the chapter is covered in class

The material is difficult but he will spend time going over the problems in class.

I enjoyed the class with Dr. alfonso - he has real business experience which is a plus and he uses new online technologies in class- which can be good or bad depending on how much time you need spend learning to use them. Excel Casegrader was a pain but the grade was curved. Easy tests- but read the book well for the exams -which were difficult.

He is extremely intelligent, and gives his students to a ton of free computer software. He is helpful, and is easy to talk to. He jokes around, but gets everything done early.

He gave us a lot of useful information and although I am normally against group projects, this one went very well...also, the use of free technological resources was useful (not only now, but for future situations as well).

This class was a lot of fun and I am looking forward to taking Dr. Affonso's next class. The group and voicethread presentations were easy but I had to read the online textbook as well as the powerpoints tests are tricky - the two lowest test grades were dropped so ended up doing well in this class

Class is ok. You should read the book as the mid term and final exam carry the most weight. He does not provide detailed directions for the final project but you will learn about new technologies. - Make sure you ask questions and see him during office hours for your projects as he gave our group detailed feedback and we all did well in the course.

The textbook was outdated but Professor Affonso focused on a lot of new online MIS technologies which I think was the best and most useful part of the course. He had very high expectations for our green technology and final group project. Each group members contribution was graded separately after feedback and we could "fire" any slackers:)

I am a '09 grad and I also took DSCI 300 and CSCI 110 with Lancie. He cares about his student's career goals and knows how to make the material meaningful to the class. Be prepared for class discussions and a lot of group work in operations management and MIS. I benefitted from his technology and consulting experience and his network connections.

I figured the course would be about only word and excel but all the web stuff he taught us about was really cool and has saved me $$. I was not a big fan of the online textbook but is was a lot cheaper.

Mr. Lancie rocks!!! One of the best teachers I have had at the CofC. i learnt a lot in this class and I wish he taught courses in my major.

I took my first online business course with Professor Affonso and was pleasantly surprised with the experience especially since I am not too good with computers. The voicethread discussions were fantastic as I could hear the discussion comments from my virtual classmates. You can take this class in your PJ's I did not have to stay in Charleston.

Not an easy course. Prof. Affonsol introduced many new business tools/technologies (perhaps more than necessary for class assignments)to keep the course interesting. expect a lot of group work in this class.

We used google docs for projects and had a lot of group work. Some of the quizzes were difficult so read the book/powerpoints carefully

I took all the classes I could from this man. He will ABSOLUTELY make you a better problem solver using some amazing data analysis tools. Caring, approachable yet formidably intelligent, and it is obvious that he is very passionate about what he does. Very highly recommended, if you are serious about pushing the envelope with new technologies

Prof. Affonso is a pretty cool guy! He uses online material & therefore doesn't require a book for his class. The online quizzes can be a little tough but class participation and the individual & group projects can really boost your grade. You want a GPA booster? Take him!

One of the best classes I ever took. I was only taking it to get extra hours and ended up REALLY enjoying it and learning a lot.

I took my first online course (Macroeconomics) with Professor Affonso this summer. Although I had some initial reservations with the online format, I found that his online materials and video discussions were a lot more engaging than most of the classes I have taken on campus - I wish the cofc would offer more online courses during the semester.

Take Prof. Alfonso - he is fun and made this required course really interesting and relevant. Pick a good group as we had to do two presentations for this class as well as an online simulation.

It's been 9 years since I took a course with Mr. Affonso and it's good to see the comments from others in his class a decade later. I was not the most dedicated student in his class because it was difficult to use a computer on folly beach but I still remember him encouraging us students to go the extra mile within and beyond the classroom.

Easy class and a good guy

I did not think I would learn much from this class as I was not interested in operations management but I am glad I took the course with professor Affonso because he has a way of making the material relevant with cases & simulations - I had taken him for MGMT 301, DSCI 300 and CSCI 199 and this was the most difficult course that I took with him.

Prof. A rocks!!!!!! and i am outta here. A lot more work than i wanted in my senior year but thanks for the interesting course

I had a great experience with Professor A. during my first online class - global tech ventures this summer. I wish the cofc would offer more of these online courses during the regular semester as it would help us save $$.

I loved Global Tech Ventures, my first online class, with Dr. Affonso over the summer. The class interaction was surprisingly good in this fast paced maymester class with the online tools we used and he was very helpful with feedback on online assignments and when we had technical difficulties.

Goes off on a tangent at times but his stories are better than the textbook and the class is never boring. one of the few dsci courses worth taking.

Neat class. I was initially intimidated by the assignments to create a mobile app design and poster but prof. Affonso was very helpful and took the time to help the entire class when we had problems

One of the best professors I have had at the cofc...Ask any of his former studens.He is passionate about his subject area and it is aparent in his teaching with a lot of classroom discussions. He really cares about his students and our academic and carrier goals and helped me get my internship (which turned into a full time job offer)

The best online class I have taken. Dr. Affonso was very helpful and the class discussions on the voice thread were really good. I work during the day so the flexibility of online courses really helps. The free online textbook was interesting and up to date...hopefully it will be used again in future semesters to save students some $$$.

Every student should take this class to learn more about mobile technology. One of the few professors who cares enough to take the time to know his students and help them.

Daunting at first for someone not technologically savvy. But very helpful on projects and other assignments. Clearly loves the subject and wants his students to do well. Almost always ends class early by like 20-30 minutes.

Attendance is taken. 14 open-book quizzes (25 questions each). Online textbook. One simple project and presentation with a partner. I took the class MWF and we had Friday's off. Weekly participation required on VoiceThread recording an answer to a textbook question. Easy class but make sure not to fall behind on VoiceThread. Do quizzes on time.

This was a very interesting class. A quiz on each chapter but the textbook was great and so were the class discussions

TAKE HIM! If you can you should take him for your FYE class or for a computer science course. He is so helpful and is always willing to answer your questions by providing sources to help you out. He is also interesting so the classes are always fun.

One of the better professors at the CofC- you can tell he enjoys teaching and will challenge students to engage in the material beyond the class. Interesting and interactive class (even at 8am) with weekly quizzes and a final project.

Prof. Affonso is one of those professor's who may seem a bit intimidating at first, but once you get to know him, he's incredibly inspirational and really makes you think. My class was small but, because of it, Professor Affonso got to know us on a more personal level and truly cared about our opinions and goals. Very intelligent man!

Will scare the crap out of you on day onethe first week so stick with it. All it is, is weekly chapter quizzes that are 4 questions long, easy grader. 2 tests that are online and in class. You get to use 2 index cards to cheat. You do a semester long simulation thats really tough but you get a lot of hints, but find a good group to work work.

This was my first online class and Dr. Affonso was very helpful in assisting me resolve some technical issues I experienced (I am not good with technology). We used a program called voicethread for discussions which I ended up loving as I could hear from other students in the class too. The textbook was excellent and there are weekly quizzes.

super easy and interesting class. only weekly quizzes online and he lets you drop the 2 lowest grades. you can do "control find" to find the answers in the online textbook. he didn't make us come to class on fridays

When I signed up for this class, I didn't know that it would be so computer science based but it's still very interesting (my FYE is Technology, Innovation, and Sustainability). There is a fair amount of homework, but if you read the two books that are assigned, it is simple.

Professor Affonso one of COFC legends! He is a great teacher. Never met anyone who teaches like he does it's a bit crazy. I learned so much. He is hilarious. You will learn so much from him and will want to come to every class. He's always there to help if you need it anytime. Just be on your toes. One of the best professors at the college and he won a bunch of awards teacher of the year best FYE teacher since 2010. If you can take his class I would highly recommend it. Really good teacher and knows what he is talking about.

This was an extremely manageable online express course. Affonso was awesome. Emailed regularly with encouraging words and wanted us to succeed. There was a lot go online homework, but that's what you get when you take a 7 week course. 100% recommend Lancie!!

He's fantastic! he is ready to help you get the job you want and prepare you for the real world! He is all about helping you in the class too. He'll try to scare you into dropping by sending you emails over the summer and being hard on you until add drop is over then he'll lighten up. Totally worth it! He's great!

Great professor to have, pushed students to do activities outside of the class but didn't make require you to. Helped me make very good connections with people my first semester and elevated me to a position where I could get the best insight on what I wanted to do. I plan on taking him again in the future if I can.

Professor Affonso is a phenomenal teacher who actually cares about his students. He truly wants you to land a great job upon graduation and he teaches things that would help in the real world. Show up to class or else he will actually call you on your phone. I can't recommend him enough, he represents the quintessential CofC experience.

This was a great online computer science class on Cybersecurity. It was a lot more interesting than I expected and the voicethread discussions were a great way to hear from classmates in this online class.

I love Affonso, but his teaching style is something that structure oriented students should avoid. He truly does care about each of his students and wants us all to succeed, but he is very disorganized when it comes to actually collecting assignments. You will be able to get an A as long as you actually participate in the class and around campus.

Affonso is a great guy, but I wouldnt suggest taking him for core CS classes. The assignments are in the syllabus and the course will definitely follow that, but class-time is spent discussing various opportunities that most of the class (being an introductory class) isnt qualified for. Hed make a great advisor, but hes a disorganized teacher.

I am glad we did not have to pay for a textbook. Class is a good class for students like me who did not know much about Cybersecurity. The GENI labs were not easy so i am glad we could workin groups for them and our final poster. Got the most out of the class discussions -the online modules were ok

He is a funny guy who gives a lot of advice on many things. Affonso gives you the sources and you can take what you want from it. He is BIG on getting you out of your comfort zone and makes you do random presentations. He seems to really care and wants to give you connections. No attendance but he remembers your face and name. I promise!

I have taken Affonso for several classes, and he is a great professor. His classes are mostly discussion-based and don't have many graded assignments. However, if you show some effort, you'll likely end up with a good grade. He gets to know each and every student and wants to help you succeed beyond the classroom.

I took this class for my FYE as a freshman, and I loved Lancie ! He is truly a gem, and such a smartie pants. He loves when students asks questions and is usually always available out of class hours. The best! I had no desire to pursue entrepreneurship, but now that I have taken this class I have completely changed my mind. The projects he makes you do are so valuable and the guest lecturers provide great contacts and great lessons for the future. your grade is pretty dependent on showing up to class and the cesim simulation. cesim is difficult but if you spend time on it, you'll understand it pretty quickly. If you show up to class and participate you'll probably get an A. He is also super well connected and wants all of his students to succeed after class so make sure to connect with him!

Not a traditional lecture class. Lancie prefers to give you multiple paths to learn the content of DATA210 and let you figure it out yourself...meaning some self motivation is needed. Highly connected professor. Good mentor

Not only are his classes geared to give you real world business experience, but he truly cares about your success and professional development. At all of my time at the College of Charleston- Professor Affonso is the most success-focused faculty member I have come across.

He is the best! There are barely any quizzes in class and it is all Coursera work which is super easy. He is inspirational and cares so deeply for students. He talks a lot but he brings in guest speakers from fields you are interested in per request. Just listen and participate and this class is the easiest you'll take.

Dr. Affonso is one of the best professors I've taken, he teaches via discussion-based classes. He teaches you stuff you would ACTUALLY USE in your professional life. Very funny individual, truly does care about his students and their futures. You'll learn good information and hear from his past alumni and they'll give good advice.

Prof Affonso's class is an interesting mix - while discussions can veer off-topic, he's genuinely invested in student success. The CESIM simulation is challenging but helpful for real-world experience. unstuck study AI proved a useful study aid alongside class participation.

Most of your learning will take place outside of class. Class is mostly about discussion and guest speakers, as well as making connections. Some people hate the "LinkedIn" and "2 data points" part, but he does it because you need those skills in the real world. He cares about his students like nobody else at CofC, and really wants you to succeed.

Affonso is so personable and he has been at the college forever so he is so knowledgeable.
