Nice, very clear and the assignments are well explained. The content is super interesting - happiness love stereotypes etc. But midterm was annoyin bc she asked more questions on who conducted which research instead of the main concepts , which is more important imo. Otherwise, shes great :)
Fun and energetic. Make sure you pay attention to the two 'course themes' which will be in the written. Hard to get an A even if work hard. Always answers emails cares a lot about students. Way to much detail is required for written things that dont even seem important.
One of the best professors I've ever had, and it was her first year teaching at SFU! Passionate and enthusiastic. Makes class enjoyable by using TV clips, getting students to act out experiments, bringing cookies to review sessions. Professional yet makes you feel like you're her friend. Would take another class with her, hands down. Delightful.
1st year teaching at SFU but easily seen already as one of the best prof yet. The course structure & engaging lectures are so well crafted it just blows your mind. She MAKES sure you understand with clear & colorful examples, videos, and demonstrations. Fair with marking if you put your time in it. I wish I went to UBC so I can be just like her.
Lara was the best prof that I have ever had at SFU and I am seriously looking into working with her in the future. She was so passionate about the content and very upbeat. Her slides were easy to follow and her exams were also straight forward and if you studied then you did well in the class. Take any class with her if you can!!! :)
Unbelievably amazing. Best prof at SFU. Lectures were very clear, and she set up meetings with students weekly to talk about anything related to course content or psychology. I wish she taught other classes, cause I would take them!
The best Prof that I ever have at sfu, she is the best beat Prof, her class is super interesting and she very helpful, and she try to do her best to teach the class, music before class every lecture, she make sure everyone enjoy the class. Must take her class!!!!!!!
SHE IS THE BEST PROF EVER. I didn't even get the grade I thought I would, but I am so happy i got to take her class. She really puts her students before herself. She replies to every email, and is very helpful with anything you need! Definitely wish I could be in her class again someday. GO LARA!!
Best professor I've ever had! She has both competence and attitudes as great prof. She is always well prepared and very organized, and communicates with students really well. She is the type of prof who makes her students fall in love with her course.I am very satisfied with her teaching, and I wish all profs at SFU were just like her.
An excellent professor I've ever had!!
The best prof ever, she is such an interesting prof, she try her best to give the best to her student. I would love to take another course with her again. Never ever meet another prof as great as her so far.
She is the nicest prof ever! It's not a super easy class, but it's fun and she is a good teacher.
Very good professor! extremely organized in her lectures and always has good class examples and videos.
She is the best professor ever. It's the end of the semester and I can't believe I've learned so many theories so well and clear. She teaches so well, lots of examples, interesting clips related to theory, activities, etc. she really wants students to learn. She made this course so easy and enjoyable. Just AWESOME :)
A really really really good professor!!! very organized, clear 65
Lara is AWESOME! she's enthusiastic, funny and even though lecture was 5:30 to 8:30pm it was worth it every time. My only complaint about Lara is that the emphasizes too much on different research and not enough on the theories themselves. However, I would take another one of her classes in a heartbeat. Simply awesome
Honestly she is hands down the absolute best prof i have ever had at SFU! She makes 3hour lectures really enjoyable by adding a lot of humour and she's very nice and approachable! her exams are very fair just know the lecture slides and your golden. i found that the TA marked the papers a little hard though
Really enjoyed this class! All the lectures and lecture slides are posted online within 2 hours, although she does show some videos in class that will not show up on the slides. Put in the time and effort and an A is attainable!
Group project is helpful and everyone can share their notes. Examples provided in class are interesting and really applied in our lives.
Lara has so much passion for the subject that every class was interesting despite it being 3 hours long. The midterm and final exams were fair and Lara goes out of her way to make study sessions where she tells you exactly what to study. Group assignments and individual papers are easy marks! would definitely recommend this class for sure!
Lara is one of the best profs I've ever had. She makes lectures fun, and really helps you understand the material. I actually looked forward to her 3 hour lectures because of this. I would definitely take a class with her again!
Shes super friendly, and very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Receptive to student feedback, always checking in and asking for suggestions and concern. Young, fresh, and full of charisma , keeps lectures light and interesting.
Highly recommend this class to anyone interested in social psychology! Lara is awesome! Lectures are extremely well-organized, she is very methodical with how the class will go. She offers awesome examples of every concept and encourages questions. Very approachable. Assignments are easy-peasy and the exams are very do-able.
Lara is the best prof I have ever had. She is so helpful and loves what she is teaching. Her lectures are long but they are entertaining and so informative. I didn't really even need my text book all semester. There are a number of assignments and they aren't that easy but they're worh it. If you can take a class with her, do it, so amazing.
Lara Aknin is really nice and she seems very interested into the topics! However, the grading system is different from other courses and the TAs mark the assignments really hard, while 50% is a pass for other classes, 55% is a pass for this course. And 56%-64% is a D. Got 71% as a final grade, and only received a C.
Lara is an amazing professor but the TA's graded really hard. The grading was also tough and it was hard to even pass. The course is really enjoyable but is definitely not an easy class.
One of the most genuinely nice people I've encountered, professor or otherwise. Very passionate about not only the subject matter, but her students as well and very receptive to feedback. Uses humour and real life examples to make the content more relatable. Very personable and approachable. I'd take any class Lara was teaching!
Lara made lectures fun and engaging, and to top it off, she is super passionate in her subject area, which is a definite plus. She incorporated a lot of real life examples and stories, which helped a lot. Tests were tricky and the TAs were strict in their marking, so study and do assignments ahead of time! I would definitely recommend this prof! Co
Lara is hands down the best prof at sfu! She keeps the class engaged by making the class fun & genuinley cares about her students! If you put in the effort you will definitely see results. Although the info is interesting the exams are quite difficult. Therefore go to her office hours! She cares abt her students doing well. Tho TAs are hard markers
This class was great. Dr Aknin puts a lot of effort into the class to make it relevant, and it shows. Very fun and interesting class. It's not a free class though, you still need to invest some effort, though I didn't need to work that hard to do well. There is a group project though
Very good prof, interesting information that is applicable to real life. As long as you do your work you should succeed! She uses a lot of relatable examples and is very caring!
Great teacher. Easy to talk to and willing to help dilemmas involving test times. She makes two part exams, in which the second part lets you talk to other people and retake the multiple choice in order to raise your grade. Her ultimate goal is to get people to learn, and love what they learn.
Best professor I've had at SFU so far! Lara is so passionate, engaging and caring. Her lectures are interesting and relevant to real life. I would highly recommend taking a class with her.
She was a really great prof. Just try not to have a family member die unexpectedly. She is unforgiving with due dates and being at a funeral is no excuse for a late paper.
Lara is a good lecturer. She explains information well. The problem I had with the class is that the criteria in the guidelines is different from what you're marked on. Also, she wasn't open to hearing my concerns about the marking of my paper and was dismissive of my concerns. Also gave a a 20% exam during the last week of classes.
Aknin is patient & kind in class. Her lectures are interesting & easy to understand. That said, the marking guidelines & criteria aren't clear, the assignments aren't marked consistent with guidelines, Aknin isn't supportive one-on-one, & Aknin wasn't open to discussing my concerns about the class even though I approached her very respectfully.
Lara Aknin makes the content really easy to understand and remember through stories and examples. She stresses an understanding of concepts over remote memorization making it easier to study for exams. Her online class was super organized and straight forward. She is super kind and enthusiastic about her class. Would definitely recommend!
She makes a simple course 10X harder than it needs to be. Do not take 260 with her. Hard marker
reconsider taking this class. Questions on the exam consist of things she spoke about for maybe .5 seconds. very strange. inconsiderate given current circumstances
I'm not sure why everyone is saying she is grading super tough and that the exam had unfair questions, if you studied, and literally just read the textbook/lectures, you should be fine. Her questions were fair and she made everything interesting with great examples and research. No need to lash out if you weren't prepared to study for a class.
Really tough grader. Her exam material is not fair, even if you read the textbook and study intensively it is hard to get above a passing grade. Her exams ask you to draw from a very specific example she would talk about for a sec and never mentions it again. Lots of papers to write when this is NOT a W course and you are graded on grammar andstyle
Dr. Aknin was an awesome prof! She's very approachable and cared a lot about her students success. She articulated concepts very clearly and had relatable examples. One of the best profs I have ever had at SFU. The only downside is the marking is kinda tough, but that could be because of the TA's I had. The course had 2 exams and a few assignments.
Dr. Aknin was an extremely difficult prof who gave very unfair exams not at all set up to show case that you actually learned something. All of her assignments were graded at a very high academic writing stand point considering this is a second year non writing course. Miss one experimental study she talks about, you won't pass
This class significantly lowered my gpa this semester. Although I studied hard and was very well prepared for exams, she purposefully formulates the questions to trip people up. Choose another class instead.
Lara is definitely one of the best profs I've had! She genuinely wants everyone to do well, and her lectures are extremely clear and helpful. Class exams/assignments are lecture based, but the textbook is useful in clarifying certain topics. Grading can be tricky, but the key is to not just be able to recite information, but apply it accordingly.
Dr. Aknin is very approachable and knowledgeable. I enjoy listening to her lectures as they were pretty engaging. What you learn is interesting, but grading is a little difficult. Overall, good class as I learned a lot, but it probably won't reflect on my grades. Recommended!
Be prepared to have your papers marked like your in graduate school, either than that the lectures are engaging and Lara is very approachable as well as her TAs.
Great professor, great lecture. you can learn a lot from her lecture. but grading is difficult. be prepared for that.
Awesome prof. So passionate about the course content which really helps you care too. Classes were prerecorded which allowed lots of flexibility. I dont know that youd get much extra out of having the class in person - the lectures were still very dynamic. You need to take her class. She preps you for the exams and is very easy to contact if you.
Her exam questions were way too specific considering the simplified nature of her lecture material.
She's really nice, one of the best professors Ive ever had.
Dr. Aknin was a wonderful professor. Not only were the lectures interesting and filled with lot's of cool elements, she was overall a kind and approachable person. Would take a course with her again.
You can tell she likes teaching! Pay attention to examples of studies and take notes she will test you on being able to give an example of a phenomenon. Read the text book. Assignments and tests are fair. Would definitely take another one of her classes!
A very fun class about happiness. Dr. Aknin is very passionate about the topic and it shows in the way she presents the material. No exams to study for which was nice. Very flexible grading as she gave us the choice of dropping 1 of 3 assignments. Weekly reading assignments and some individual and group projects were pretty self-explanatory.
Lara is the most compassionate prof I have ever had. If you ever have a personal issue, she is very accommodating. Her lecture material is fascinating and applicable to the real world. Grading is precise, and assignments are given well in advance. I wish she taught more UG courses, I would take them all. I highly recommend it!
This was my favourite class ever, Lara is an incredible prof. She is very receptive to feedback and structures her exams and assignments purposefully and clearly. I even had fun writing the midterm, I don't know how she does it. She is an engaging and thoughtful speaker, I loved attending lectures each week! If you can take Lara's classes, DO IT!!
She is amazing! She responds to emails quickly, follows up with you and tries her best to accommodate as much as she can when it comes to scheduling office hours outside her regular times. Read the textbook, and highly recommend to make quizlets based on the lectures and readings, it'll help before the final and midterm! Also, know the examples!
Best prof at sfu! Lectures are engaging, criteria is clearly articulated and concepts are well defined with lots of examples to facilitate knowledge. The class is test heavy but if you study the material and connect the research studies discussed in class with course concepts you will do really well. Highly recommend!
Lara is incredible. You're not graded on much, and the exams are fair and very straightforward if you study.
Aknin's midterm and final were both pretty easy--just focus on the core concepts, and don't bother memorizing names or dates. The criteria for projects was a little vague, but she asks for feedback at the end of every class and I think it really helps her improve. Beware that when she says 10 minute break, she'll usually restart class after 7 mins.
She loves the material and it shows, she loves teaching and it shows, really concerned about getting feedback and she implements it the next week. She is also well-known in her field of research. Overall, she is legit. Take this class with her, it's super interesting.
I wish that I had more credits left in my degree to continue taking courses with Dr. Aknin - I'm not sure I've had a more compassionate professor at SFU. I use the word 'compassionate' because it truly reflects in Dr. Aknin's teaching style, interactions with students, and course material. I cannot possibly offer high enough praise for her.
great prof but I felt like this class consumed so much of my time. No exams in the course but spends way too much time doing the lecture which is pointless and has so many class activities going on, its a little much. On top of that, there's a weekly worksheet & 3 paper & podcast assignment. Must attend class as well.
Class felt so dragged on and never ending. Lectures were always so long and multiple assignments.
Her teaching style is really engaging and makes everything very clear. You can tell she really likes the topic and wants you to learn and apply it to yourself. The weekly readings are not much and the topics are more discussed in the lectures. If you go to the lectures and read the chapter for the week, you're good for exams.
Class content is very interesting and highly applicable to daily life, but there are so MANY things to remember which makes the exams a bit hard. Prof is very caring and enthusiastic; she always try to make class interesting. She seems to genuinely want to know students outside of classroom and really open to conversation.
Lara is passionate in what she teaches, which makes the lectures very entertaining. Although the exams and assignments were fair, the grading criteria was a little vague. However, Lara is an amazing prof as she genuinely wants everyone to do well in her class. The readings are manageable and the course itself is super interesting.
Great prof, you can tell she is very passionate about the subject. Will happily answer any question you ask her in class, cares a lot about her students. Textbook is provided and you should read it. Make sure to pay attention to the studies and theories that she talks about in lecture, as her short answer questions will ask about them.
Lara is a very passionate professor who cares about the success of her students. A very detailed syllabus with clear guidelines so students know what to expect from the class and lectures are designed to be engaging. Textbook reading is definitely necessary to do well on exams, but the information is interesting so it's easy to retain.
Lovely, caring professor with engaging lectures, fair marking (as long as you do the readings and work!) and super accessible outside class hours! Highly recommend.
Dr Aknin gives very engaging lectures and properly communicates clearly about any updates or rescheduling to do with assignments. Her enthusiasm for social psychology is contagious! Highly recommend this prof!
Dr. Lara Aknin is one of the nicest professors I have ever had. The lectures are really engaging and most of them are posted so it is easy to catch up if you miss a class. I didn't totally understand what was asked of me for the MeSearch assignment, but the class was generally fair and actually quite fun.
Lara is arguably one of the best profs at SFU. She genuinely cares about students, responds promptly to emails, and takes feedback into consideration. She made her exam criteria very clear and hosted final review sessions that clearly described what she was looking for. She was very fair and made it easy to learn. STAN LARA
Lara's lectures are awesome, she is probably the best prof I ever had. Super caring and accommodating, and explains concepts really well with real life examples.
Dr. Aknin is a good professor and does her job well. The content of PSYC 260 is easy, therefore it is easy to do well, but the marking of exams and assignments made it difficult to really control your grade I found. Was not a fan of her TAs and their marking/feedback at all, which really impacted how I view her, and the course itself.
Lara gives entertaining, straightforward lectures and also lays out what kinds of questions will be on the exams so there should be no surprise. Her midterm/final guides are extremely helpful, she is caring and makes it easy for you to do well in the course. Lectures are audio recorded as well.
She's a legend for a reason! I enjoyed the format of her class; it helped me better understand the concepts that were introduced to us. Make sure to keep up with the readings as there are a lot of articles to read, but they were manageable. Your grades for papers are highly dependent on the TAs, which can make or break your grade in this class.
Lara is an amazing prof! she is super passionate about what she teaches and has a very in depth lecture. However, most of the stuff that is on exams are based off the lectures, not too much textbook although it is still good to read. She takes feedback very well and does her best to incorporate it to make things easier for us
Lara is such an engaging professor. She makes lectures fun and interesting. The three hours is horrid tho. I will say that the TA's wrecked this class for me. Lara was so accommodating and seemed like she was clear with what she wanted. The TA's were unfair and graded HARD. I studied too, this isn't a "you didn't try, so your grade reflects that".
Amazing prof, take her class!!! 3 hour lectures suck but she made it so fun and easily absorbable. TA's were fair and her exams dont try to trick you like lots of psyc exams do, if you study youll do really well. she uses sooo many real life examples and gives constant lecture outlines and updates to make 3 hour lectures feel super manageable.
Dr. Aknin is an amazing professor who is clearly passionate abt the course. The 3hr lec was rough, but tried her best to make them engaging. The TAs graded harshly, especially for an intro course. Didn't like the peer pod concept, members rarely showed up (fair enough) left all the work on you, and received a mark only if you stayed till the end.
Aknin gave engaging lectures. Clearly passionate and knowledgeable about materials. Went out of her way to give accommodations. Lectures are a little long but in general a good experience.
Lara was an amazing prof. I loved her lectures, they were super engaging and she gave great examples of social psychology phenomena in action. Her review sessions before exams were extremely helpful. If you have listened to her lectures and follow her review guide you will be prepared for the exam. Loved her energy as well.
Lectures are interesting & engaging. There are very few assignments with only two papers and an online mastery quiz. The quiz is super easy & the papers seem easy at first but are graded very harshly. The midterm and final were reasonable but difficult. However, I would definitely recommend taking this course as Dr. Aknin is an amazing lecturer.
Provides engaging lectures, and breaks info down to where it feels easy. There were two papers that seemed straightforward but were actually graded pretty harsh. The midterm and final were both two-stage exams which were helpful for a little boost!
Expect mandatory groupwrk at the end of every lecture & bring earplugs to exams in case she still lets TAs chat loudly w/ eachother throughout. "Two-stage" structure might've helped some students, but 2nd stage HAD to be written in self-organized grps, so only sociable folks were able to benefit. Quiet/neurodivergent individuals seemed to be SOL.
One of the best profs at SFU! She is caring, accessible and an excellent lecturer. She has a bunch of different assignments (writing assignments, group work, reading comprehension and a final) and obviously cares a lot about her field and her students. There is a lot of reading but, if you put in the work, you learn a lot and will do well.
Took her class in Fall 2024. I couldn't handle the 3 hour lectures. The midterm and final were a bit difficult. Whoever is reading this, just like what other ppl before me wrote, FOCUS ON HER POWERPOINT SLIDES for the midterm/final. Remember the studies/experiments mentioned in class/on the slides & understand what happened in those experiments !!!
