Great teacher! Chemistry will always be hard, but she explains it in a very clear and understandable way. Attendance is mandatory because of clicker grades, but you can miss up to 7 days without any negative effects. Always has time to help her students. She really does want everyone to do well in her class and to learn the subject thoroughly.
Great teacher, very good with homework extensions and reasonable amounts, easy exams, teaches thoroughly, many office ours, interesting (well, not boring), favorite class (Chem 111) of my first semester.
Easily class but you'll only do good on the exams if you actually go to class. Has tons of favorable course policies (ie, if your final exam grade weight is doubled if you score higher on it than one of the tests). I hate chem but class was manageable and al-Hariri definitely tries to make class interesting.
She was difficult to understand at first, but her accent grows on you. Her class is pretty easy for chemistry, especially if you attend class. I'd choose her over Botch even if her class is an 8am. Her tests are easier and she gives less OWLS (homework). She gets very flustered in class though so you cant really talk.
She is extremely difficult to understand. And when you ask her a question to clarify what she says out loud does not match up what she writes on paper. You have to look up and teach yourself from the textbook because her lecture slides are extremely confusing. I had to get help from another professor.
She does have an accent that is hard to understand at first, but you get used to it pretty quick. She does iClicker grades, so you should go to class, although every lecture is posted online. Her exams and homework are very easy. Sometimes you wish she'd ask harder questions so you'd feel like you're learning more. Very nice and helpful.
Professor Al-Hariri's class is pretty easy. The exams aren't that bad. It also isn't as hard to understand her as some people may say. I'd recommend her class.
She was awesome, funny, and really chill in class. It was a little difficult since it was an honors class, but it was still manageable as long as you did what she asked. I would definitely recommend her.
Very good professor, I hated chem before this class but she made me understand it.
She has an extremely difficult accent to understand. Furthermore, she does explain why chemical properties work the way they do, I only did well in that class because I had taken AP Chem in high school, but for those that haven't taken any advanced chemistry courses, they won't learn anything. She also has no basic understanding of English grammar
Although she puts her slides up on Moodle, you need to go to class. If you don't then you will miss valuable information that she does not write down on her slides. Her whole intention is to have you succeed but her English is horrible. She wasn't horrible but not the best
Best chem professor at UMass. Fair exams, clear in class, and homework was manageable. definetly take chem 111 with her!
I don't know why everyone's saying she's hard to understand, her English is fine. I was terrified to take orgo but she made it very easy and taught it really well. Orgo turned out to be easier for me than chem 1 or chem 2
I did not find her helpful, I failed her Chem class. When I went for extra help, she would only tell me what grades I would have to get to pass. Her accent is quite difficult at times.
Great class. Never thought I would enjoy Organic Chemistry but I did! It is a tough subject to grasp at times but she is great at explaining and helping. Pay attention, go to every class, do all the homework and go see her if you don't understand anything or need help and you will do good in the class. She is wonderful!
She's a nice teacher and by no means is her english bad. Sometimes it's easier to pay attention because you find yourself subconsciously keeping track and making sure you can decode what she says. Go through the lectures before the exam and do practice tests you should be fine. She does clicker grades. I failed AP Chem and she actually made sense
Overall all a good professor. It is very easy to understand her even with a somewhat heavy accent. Conveys the message well. I would prefer to have better materials to learn with than just the power points. It sometimes seems we rushed over important points and then were asked to use it extensively. Perhaps more demonstrations in class.
She teaches very well and is very thorough. Many i>clicker questions and examples help. Never opened the book, always used her notes and they were fantastic! Loved her
She was an overall good professor and made the material in class relatively simple, but tests could be pretty hard. Barely used the textbook except for occasional homework. Sometimes rushed over topics in class that were important for exams but overall effective professor. Would definitely recommend.
Literally the worst professor I've had so far at UMass. I highly recommend you try and avoid taking this class. She is unclear, does not to a very good job in keeping the students interested. If you want to pass this class read the chem book yourself.
Lectures for this class did not really help and I often found them confusing. Attendance mandatory with iClicker. A lot of the homework is optional in her class which isn't optional for other professors, so good if you don't want as much work. However found myself learning the material rather well through the homework system.
She was really nice and sweet. Although her accent was a little tough at first, she made great slides and she was funny on occasion as well. Take her class!
Very nice and knowledgeable. Generally helpful and knew the material. Only flaws were that she sometimes droned a bit in lecture and has an accent that takes getting used to. Otherwise great teacher, reasonable workload and difficulty, would recommend.
Lecture is usually clear and useful but she starts moving really fast through material and expects you to know alot of reagents/reactions. Her exams are so hard, timed, and at night, making it miserable to take. Not to mention her hw is hard and her practice exams and quizzes are nothing like the actual exams and quizzes.
Nice professor. I don't get the complains about her accent. It's not bad at all. She's very easy to understand. You need to attend class for clicker questions but everything you need to know to pass the exams is in the slides she posts. Very easy final which replaced lowest exam grade. Homework was different from class but there wasn't a lot of it.
I think she is okay . Her accent is very understandable and she is very helpful at office hours . But I must say this , Do not underestimate her quizzes . They could kill your grade I got 86+ in the exams (4) but the quizzes droped me to a c+ in the class . Learn from me and study hard . She is better than the other chem professors
she uses clear power points that are very straightforward and easy to understand, whereas other professors you have to teach yourself and then memorize...for her it's just a matter of memorizing what she teaches you.study hard!
She has an accent but you get used to it quickly. She's alright at explaining concepts but it doesn't matter so much since her exams are so easy. If you need to take this course I'd recommend her but you won't learn too much.
I don't think I learned anything at all besides the NMR stuff in the beginning of the semester. Be prepared to be lost a lot and struggle while she tries to teach you new stuff before quizzes. Ugh.
She's a very nice lady, and a pretty good lecturer. This is standard General Chemistry, so you really shouldn't have too much trouble with it. Provided you do all the OWL homework, you should expect a B+ or higher. The exams were pretty straightforward, though I disliked doing exams on computers. The lab component is a joke.
She is very helpful, and expects just the right amount of effort from her students. Her tests were all multiple choice which made the problems less daunting than if they weren't. Take her if you can!
As long as you go to class you won't have a problem. Her lectures are clear. Her tests follow the same format as her in class problems, which is why going to class is key. Would take her again!
Great professor. Definitely take over McDaniel if you want to do better and learn more. Explains things very clearly, very generous with examquiz difficulty and grading. Caring person, very helpful and usually drops one exam grade in favor of the final exam grade if you do better. Exams are multiple choice and iClickers are only 3% of your grade.
She's the best!
This is the best class I've ever taken. She's so smart. She has great fashion sense as well, and super helpful! Would take again 1010
Extremely thoughtful professor in how she delivers material and grades. This subject is inhertiently hard and she does not try to make it harder than it has to be. Study, show up and try and you will do fine.
Very clear and straight to the point lectures. Not easy but definitely doable exams. Just need to sit down and memorize stuff. Most interesting class so far.
Organic Chemistry is hard, but she really tries her best to spell it all out for you. The course is based on her lectures, and as long as you memorize all the reactions and examples from lecture you will do fine. The course is very straight forward, and she is not out to trick you in any way.
Orgo is clearly hard. Al-hariri is great at teaching you what you need to know. She teaches by example which is honestly the greatest way to learn. If you can memorize reactions, study hard and go to lecture and understand her Iclickers you will do fine. She makes Orgo do-able and is really out there to help you out. Orgo is very doable w effort.
I love her. She's honestly one of the most genuine chem professors I've ever had. Too many people criticize her, but honestly, they're probably upset because they got a bad grade, and didn't work hard enough for their grade. You definitely have to work your butt off to succeed, but that's the sign of a true educator.
Dr. Al-Hariri is a pretty fair teacher and the class is pretty straightforward. Very clear lectures. Lots of OWL online HW but it does help you prepare for the tests which have a "pyramid" set up and are all multiple choice so that's nice. IClicker for attendence. If you have to take Chem 111, I'd definitely recommend it with Al-Hariri.
Overall good teacher. Sucks when it comes to the math in the course, which is about 1/3 of the course
For a 250+ person lecture, I found the professor to still be really helpful to students; I found the lectures to be clear, and she even added demonstrations to make it more interesting. The pyramid tests were more than fair, and at the end of the semester, she let us complete any missed HW for credit and then gave extra credit opportunities.
She really cares about the material. She would often do demonstrations in class, and she was very helpful during office hours. She also posts the lecture slides the night before which made taking notes easy. I felt prepared for all the tests. I would definitely recommend taking this course with her.
Great professor, was very helpful and kind. She's such a happy person and she knows the subject well! Recommend her.
All in all, Hariri's class was really fun. Her lectures are kind of long, but she explains the material very clearly. She uses great examples to explain everything. Tests are extremely straightforward as long as you study and know how to perform the specific calculations from every unit. Definitely sign up for her class if it is available.
She is very enthusiastic and knows what she is teaching. She deserves lots of respect. I would honestly take her again.
Extremely passionate about Orgo II. She wants all her students to succeed and will always have the door open if you had any questions. iClicker is required for this class with 5 days you could miss. However missing a class will definitely throw you off.
Dr. Al-Hariri is an amazing professor! She explains everything clearly & teaches through examples. She wants her students to do well. Go to class & all the SI sessions. You'll have memorize SO many reactions but its 100% possible if you put time in. She will try & trick you on exams so pay close attention to the questions! Will truly miss chem 262
She gives pyramid exams but that doesn't help, she hardly explains concepts and you self teach from the owls and theres a lot of them and she doesn't space them out so its easy to get behind, she has a super thick accent making the class vey annoying because you have to place close attention, if i clickers weren't involved i wouldn't have shown up
Al-Hariri truly cares about her students. Lectures a big but if you go to her office hours she is accommodating and answers questions very clearly. It is hard at times to understand her accent, but you get used to it and you'll see she's a great lecturer
Sometimes, in her lecture, I get so bored that I'm not sure if I've peed myself or drooled so much I've created a puddle. Sometimes difficult to understand, sometimes her writing is not clear and concise, and often she zooms through important lectures. Prepare to dip into your pockets to pay for a tutor or wait around for UMass to provide one.
Professor Al-Hariri is extremely reasonable. It's hard to get an A in her class, given that tests are worth 85% of your final grade, and she doesn't curve or scale whatsoever. Her tests are difficult, but she will always make it very clear what will be on the test. Takes the time to go over every test and give partial credit. Great professor.
She's a solid choice for gen chem. She's very clear on what you need to understand and if you ask her to explain she's very good at clearing confusion. She does clicker participation but if you show up twice a week then you're good. I have a strong chem background so I didn't struggle, but if you don't then she's still one of the best options.
She is kind and would upload lecture slides on Moodle. Workload is light -- only a few questions for homework each month/test. She does NOT trick you on the exams at all, which means that you can ace it by only reviewing lecture slides & doing practice exams. She allowed us to replace one lowest exam score with the final exam and gave extra credits
Prof. Al-Hariri is the best intro chem instructor there is. If you want a passing grade do all your owls, do the lecture notes (she preposts all clicker questions before class) before class time. Go to SI, and you'll get an A. Going to class isn't mandatory because you can learn a lot on your own and practice alot on youtube videos.
Dr. Al-Hariri provides you with all the materials to succeed. She posts lectures online and offers extra credit once a semester. Sometimes her lectures seem fast but there is a lot of material to be taught. Go to SI sessions if you need clarity and you will be all set. Tests are straightforward. She genuinely wants all her students to succeed.
I honestly loved Lara. She genuinely cares for her students by bringing in a lot of demos, goes through examples thoroughly. She is by far the best professor I had. Her tests are straightforward, and lower pyramid exams are very similar to the take home exams. As long as you look over your OWLs and practice exams, you will be golden.
Go to class, take notes and, measure how much you understand by answering the clickers. Then... GO TO SI. SI was the most helpful part of all this. Especially if you find yourself tuning her out during class for whatever reason.
In comaprison to other professors for chem 111 she is harder. Theres WAY more homework and about half the amout of time for exams
She's helpful and caring. Though she gives more work than the other Chem 111 classes, it's pretty light. As long as you plan ahead, you will do well in her class. All homeworks are due the day of the exam, so you have lots of time to do them! In addition, she posts all her powerpoints on moodle and drops 5 iclicker grades.
Orgo 2 is tough but Dr. Al-Hariri is really good at explaining everything and her slides are very well done and organized. However, it is a lot of memorizing so give yourself lots of time to prepare for exams and go to SI sessions. Compared to other chem classes, she doesn't give much HW at all so that's a plus.
Orgo is not about memorizing, it's about understanding. Al-Hariri is an extremely fair professor; the lectures are fast-paced and dense, and this is by no means an easy course, but if you go to the SI session, then you should be totally prepared to do well on the exams. She has a lot of material to teach us and does a great job explaining it all.
Extremely helpful in office hours. Drops 5 clicker scores, 10% of OWLs (there aren't many anyway). Does not give extra credit or curves/scales the grades. 3 exams and final amounting to 85% of grade; All MC and she gives partial credit for some MC answers. Replaces lowest exam with final if it's higher.
Very good lecturer, arguably the best in the department. Clear, never makes mistakes and is always on time. Professional too.
Really nice teacher, but class is really difficult. You have to attend class because she does iclickers each class. Take chem 110
Lara makes Orgo 2 actually enjoyable. She cares so much about her students and she is VERY CLEAR when lecturing. She posts the slides before and after lecture, and types out important concepts. Obviously, you need to put in effort in this class, but its definitely possible to get an A if you try your best.
Even though orgo itself is difficult, there is something so rewarding about learning it to the extent that you do in Lara's class. Yes she teaches a lot of material but she teaches it VERY well. Definitely print out the slides before class so you don't have to draw all the structures. I've used my knowledge from this class in other classes!
Lara Al-hariri is one of the best professors I have ever had. She is very inspiration, loves organic chemistry, and loves helping students learn. Student success is very important to her. Exams are EXTREMELY fair. You do have to put in the work, do practice, study, and go to SI sessions, but she truly helps along the way!
She cares about her students and is very helpful when you go to her office hours. However I don't agree with her style of teaching where she makes us memorize every single reaction. This is mostly where my time went while studying rather than learning the application of it. SI sessions were extremely helpful so I recommend going in order to pass.
Professor Al-Harari really knows the material and cares about her student's success but I often felt overwhelmed in lecture. The subject material is very difficult. You have to put a good amount of time into studying or you won't do well. Go to the SI sessions, especially the review sessions before each test; they were very helpful.
She teaches the material well and is very clear what we are supposed to know for exams. The material itself is not impossible if you stay on top of the work. Do yourself a favor and GO TO SI REGULARLY. If it weren't for that, I probably would've failed.
Dr Al Hariri had clear lectures and really made sure you grasped the material. MANY Iclickers each class but they were there to help you out. There was also a lot of homework but she gave you enough time to complete them. No quizzes, the exams were very easy if you reviewed lectures. Would definitely take another course with her!
I took chem 111 and 262 with Lara and both were great experiences. She wants her students to succeed and it very fair with her exams and grading. It is chemistry and therefore the classes are long lectures, which is expected, but she really try to make it a good experience by breaking up the class and trying new techniques regularly.
I absolutely loved Chem 262 with Dr. Al-Hariri. She is extremely knowledgeable and her lectures are worth attending. She encourages people to talk amongst themselves about the clicker questions, which helps clear up any confusion. Most of the class is based on your exams, which are challenging but fair.
She is an awesome professor one of my favorites from my time here. The way she teaches helps you do practice problems so that you stay engaged during lecture. Her exams I would not say are easy but if you study they are doable. I would say if you are scared to take this class don't be you can get an A if you work hard for it. I recommend 100%.
Professor Lara Al-Hariri is an amazing teacher who is always willing to help her students. I easily understood all her lectures and the tests were easy because she taught the lectures well. I highly recommend this teacher for all chemistry classes.
Dr. Al-Hariri is one of the most amazing professors I've ever had. Her lectures are so straightforward and easy to follow. She's fantastic. I would also recommend going to every single SI Session. Literally this class is so easy just make an effort to learn because Orgo gets a bad rep, but Dr. Al-Hariri makes it manageable.
She will teach her class and explain things front, back, left, right until you are able to understand the concepts. Her way of grading is extremely fair, she's approachable and sweet, and she cares a lot. I learned so much, and her class has helped me in other courses.
Prof. Al-Hariri does a great job at explaining the topics necessary to pass the class. I will definiely take her again for Orgo if I can.
Prof Al-Hariri is very good at explaining the material for this course. iClicker is used so you have to go to lecture. Overall, if you took a chemistry class in high school you should be fine with this course. Use the practice tests to study for the exams, they are pretty similar. Labs aren't fun but nothing too hard, as long as you do the OWLS.
She really cares about you as a learner and understands the class is hard. if someone didn't like the class they probably didn't take the learning process upon themselves enough
Dr. Al-Hariri is one of the best professors I've ever had. She's so good at explaining complex topics and makes her expectations very clear with the extent to which you should understand the material. All of her exams are super fair, and, if you study the materials she's given you, you'll be just fine.
-Exams: 100 points each (4 exams) -i-clciker: 30 (participation) (can miss up to 5 classes) -OWL: 100 points (EOC and mastery OWLs)- can extend 2 mastery owl deadlines Very hard class because its exam heavy- but she's an amazing teacher
I have taken 4 semesters of chemistry at UMass and I think Al-Hariri is one of the lower rated professors. She goes way too fast in lecture and is not through when she is explaining the complex reactions that come with Orgo 2. She also only provided 4 points of extra credit out of 500 which compared to other professors is basically nothing
Overall great professor, she makes organic chemistry very feasible. She's very sweet and understands that students need a minute break every once and a while when she goes over a lot of content in class. The questions she asks in class along with the homework on OWL help a lot with exam preparation. Remember you always need to try with organic chem
Orgo 2 probably the one of the most difficult classes you will take in your undergrad. However dont let that scare you. If you work on orgo every week, attend all the SI sessions, and do PRACTICE problems, you will get an A. You made it this far trust me, just practice like you would in math, and you will be set. SI sessions, practice and lecture
Al-Hariri is the best chemistry lecturer I've ever had, and she won the distinguished teaching award this year for it. She explains things super clearly, and if you go to SI sessions you'll be fine. The average on exams was around a 70, but they were very similar to practice exams and clicker questions. Put in the work and you'll do well.
Lara is an awesome person- but this is a terrible class. I found lectured totally uninteresting and had difficulty with the material. Nothing against the prof.
Chemistry is my worst subject and I got Bs in all my chem classes in college so far. Al-hariri is the absolute best! This class does require a lot of effort but with studying, SI sessions and owls, there's no reason why you should not get an A. Exams are very easy!
I didn't realize how good I had it with her. She is very good at explaining things and I wish I had done the homeworks and taken class more seriously so I didn't need to withdraw. The OChem dept at umass is very hit or miss- taking Orgo 2 with Lara is the best move you could make.
She really understands that Organic Chemistry is a hard subject, and she does her best to do different teaching styles to make things as bearable as possible for everyone. She is extremely caring and willing to do anything to help her students, but it's just in the nature for the exams to be hard, so definitely prepare yourself for a lot of work.
Al Hariri is a caring professor but it is hard to link the connections of the topics being taught. The owls are where I learned mostly with the exams having Marvin drawing which poses a large challenge. The lectures are long and I would tend to mentally check out and could no longer grasp the information. She does take 1 min breaks knowing though.
Yea so Orgo 2 is definitely harder than orgo 1. Lara is good tho the class isn't too hard but you need to work for a good grade
Although Prof. Al-Hariri is great at explaining concepts, she is not the most organized when explaining their purpose, resulting in me being a bit lost for the first part of the class. Also, her class did not overlap that much with the OWLs so the EOCs were a pain. This class was definitely harder than orgo 1 but an A is achievable.
I didn't take CHEM112 before taking this course but CHEM111 has proved to be a solid foundation. Dr. Al-Hariri is excellent at explaining concepts and how she solves problems. She has inspired me to try harder in this class than any other! Definitely would recommend taking Dr. Al-Hariri for any CHEM course(s) at UMASS.
Don't take the class during COVID times cause all exams are proctored through a program. She does nothing for the transition to online. She posts pre-recorded lectures and her TA's answer everything so I really don't know what she's getting paid to do. Worst professor ever.
Dr. Al-Hariri is a really caring person and wants students to succeed and understand the material. This, however, feels impossible because of her teaching style. Would NOT recommend taking this class online (during COVID) because she just uses old lectures. Exams are WAY TOO HARD. I know far too many of her students that are failing.
Extremely lazy. All prof did was post pre-recorded lectures from PREVIOUS SEMESTERS. Used an anxiety-provoking proctoring system on extremely difficult exams. If it wasn't for SI, TA, and hiring a private tutor to help me with homework's I would've failed like a lot of other students. Worst class to take during COVID.
I took Chem111 with Professor Al-Hariri, which was completely asynchronous. You got points for watching the lectures, but beyond that the grade is almost completely homework assignments and tests. The tests and homework assignments line up with the textbook, so if you read it you're pretty much set.
Professor Al-Hariri is a very sweet person who genuinely seems to want her students to succeed. However this class is not one any student with anxiety, etc should take. Professor used pre-recorded lectures from past semesters and use a highly stress inducing online proctoring system.
In the beginning of the semester it was hard to understand her because her style of teaching is somewhat different. This class was asynchronous which did make it hard. There was chapter homeworks due, but they werent so hard. SI sessions were super helpful and the professor always responded to emails. It was a lot of content each lecture.
I took this course over winterterm. It is the single hardest course I have ever had. If you take it over 6 weeks, just accept the fact you will have no life outside of orgo, which is sort of expected. The amount of info crammed into 6 weeks is CRAZY.. LOL! Al-Hariri was good! I liked her! She let me have 2 exam extentions, she wants you to do well!
You will not understand her recordings. She does not know how to edit them and leaves her answers cut out. Her accent can be extremely difficult to understand but she is aware of this and says the funniest things.
Im currently enrolled. This class might work for some if you hate yourself. Not well adapted to online due to Covid. The lectures are old recorded content. The editing is bad. Hand writing like a child. The online proctoring service is invasive. I shouldnt have to show my apartment to my professor. What a joke!Dont be lazy Alhariri, fix this!!!
She was caught singing 100 Gecs in the background of her lecture and always makes Spongebob references in class for whatever reason. I be the only one laughing but it's all good.
She has been the best professor I have ever had. She is a great teacher and you can tell she really cares about how we do in her class! I would 100% recommend taking her class for orgo because it is a tough class, but I think the way she teaches it makes it so clear! LOVED AL-HARIRI!!! Could not recommend her more! also as far as textbook it's owl.
I absolutely love Professor Al-Hariri. Could not recommend her more. Her lectures are concise and she goes over many examples that are similar to the ones on the exam. If you put in the work, you will do just fine.
As someone who struggled in Chem 261 with a different prof, I really appreciated Al-Hariri. She kept lectures concise, gave enough OWL hw to practice but not overwhelming, and cares for students. Attending SI sessions helped a ton to help me learn the material so definitely do so if you need help!
Professor Al-Hariri is the BEST chemistry teacher!! The class is content heavy & difficult in general but if you put in the effort, youll do great. Her lectures are to the point and she gives examples similar to the ones on the exams. Go to the SI sessions, especially exam reviews, theyre literal life savers! 10/10 recommend, loved her class!!
She is super sweet, but her examples don't usually make much sense. I did just fine in Chem 261, but am so lost in her class. Maybe it's just me since everyone else seems to like her. I have to watch her lectures twice to absorb the material. But one time she randomly extended our homework to the next week just so we could enjoy our weekend.
I hate this class #awful she gives me #trauma
Hard class but a great professor. She is very straight forward and the exams are exactly what you learn in class/homework. She is very reasonable and truly wants her students to succeed.
Do not take this class. It's literally the worst thing I've ever done. Very nice lady but her lectures are very confusing and it's very easy to get lost during them. After every lecture (which I have to go for participation points) I go to the library and teach the material because her lectures are not helpful.
This is by nature a very hard class, but Dr. Al-Hariri is so reasonable and kind! The OWL homework load is light, and she encourages engagement with peers during lectures which is a nice touch and was helpful for me. She also gave extra credit for our second exam and gave us no homework during halloween. She clearly cares about her students a lot.
She's a nice person, but holy cow, she can't teach. The OWL homeworks are pretty stupid, they're totally confusing and pointless. If you like science and math, you'll probably survive, but if you don't want to stay up all night double checking calculations and trying to figure out equations, good luck with this class.
If you aren't already great at chem, this prof is NOT for you. I hadn't taken chem since high school and she barely reviewed the basics & went straight to the hard stuff. I teach myself how to do everything on my own because her lectures go very fast & are confusing. Do not take this class if you don't want to have daily mental breakdowns lol
she's nice but lectures can be confusing so i have to rewatch them & pretty sure we're behind on material. owl hws take me hours to do and I hate them but the owl practice exams are similar to the actual thing, I just hate how they're only 25 q's. iclickers usually everyday so you should prob attend, if ur not a great chem student good luck lol
This class absolutely sucks. She is a nice lady but I do not understand anything that is going on. SOOOOO much OWL homework, it takes me hours (sometimes even days) to finish. The people who are already advanced in chem seem to enjoy the class but if you aren't, save yourself from mental breakdowns and take another professor's class.
Lara is a nice lady but she teaches the material in a much more complicated way than it needs to be taught. The homework is very difficult and super time consuming. Lectures also make me want to die.
Dr. Al-Hariri is so kind and caring but I struggle to understand the material when she teaches it. She tends to overcomplicate things or just doesn't explain thoroughly enough. Her lectures are also so boring but you need to pay attention to everything because the course moves very fast. Exams are multiple choice and very easy to make mistakes on.
Ms. Al Hairi gives pretty basic lectures that could be given in half the amount of time. OWL will be teaching you chemistry rather than the professor. she rarely answers in class questions and yells at students for discussing answers. she manages to make basic chemistry concepts confusing. 3 exams make up most of your grade.
I got an A pretty much by just doing all of the SI worksheets and taking the practice eExams. It's hard to pay attention in class and she tends to over complicate topics. You can get a nearly perfect score by using class resources, though, so it's not a hard class at all. I just wouldn't say her teaching style is very effective.
Professor Al-Hariri is great. As long as you do the practice exams before taking the exams and then prep using those, do the homework, and ask for help if you need, it's easy to get an A. You do, however, have to put a little bit of time and effort in. Be sure to take plenty of notes. Chem111 is hard as is, so don't expect it to be a cakewalk.
Professor Al-Hariri was very accessible before and after class to go over tests, quizzes, or answer any questions. If you do all of the OWL assignments, pay attention and take notes in class, and do the practice exams/study, you will receive a good grade. The amount of practice and effort put in will reflect in your grades.
The lectures in orgo 2 are extremely dense and hard to wrap your head around, but I believe this is inherent to organic chemistry. Prof. Al-hariri, however, is a very caring and passionate person, who clearly wants to see students succeed and enjoys chemistry immensely. A little dull at times, but a great professor teaching a very difficult class.
The class itself will be hard if you skip or don't do homework. If you keep up you should be fine and Al Hariri is a great professor and very understanding and helps you as much as she can for exams.
Thinks that everything coming out of her mouth is the most important thing you'll ever hear. Attendance is mandatory and she gets rude and whiny if people aren't paying attention. Tries to force you to care about chemistry despite teaching a basic gened. If you're like me, who needed this for some requirement or gened and doesn't need chem, avoid.
Al-Hariri's the best professor I've had. She understands that orgo is unreasonably hard and really wants everyone to do well. She extends deadlines all the time and really makes it clear exactly what will be on exams. She makes it easy as possible and really cares about her students.Would love to take another class with her. Definitely go to class
Prof. Hariri understands that Orgo Chem is difficult, and does her best to help us learn it. She responds to emails quickly, and outlines exactly what would be covered on the exams beforehand. Do the practice exams, some of the questions do come up in the exams.
I am a visiting student at UMass for the summer session. Professor Al-Hariri is the best lecturer ever! She is very accessible and overall I didn't have to use other resources such as YouTube videos to understand the topics, her lectures were enough. I wish I had taken orgo 1 with her she made orgo 2 easier than orgo 1! I would 100% recommend her!
First class and all I thought was Dr. Al-Hariri is so full of herself. Super egotistical. She kept praising her own teaching. She wasn't lying though -- she is an incredible teacher, as much as I hate to say it. Very clear lectures and the homework is annoying but it forces you to know the material. Super easy class as long as you care enough.
professor al-hariri is great at explaining chemistry to those who do not have any chem background. Class attendance is important, but if you go to class, take good notes, and do the homework you will do well. She is very clear about what is on exams and she gives good study tips. She genuinely cares about the success of her students.
Lara is a pretty good teacher and I would recommend her, she seems like the best chem111 teacher at umass. Concepts are difficult but lectures give you step by step on how to solve equations and theres lots of practice problems for homework. Exams will be hard if you dont study/practice.
obnoxious person but not too difficult
she is heartless and the most cruel human being ever to walk the earth. I genuinely hate chemistry solely because of her dead blonde hair
She did give me an extension for a exam I was not prepared for, but the course in general is a tough one. Even though Ive learnt all of it before, I forgot it all by the way they teach it.
Not a difficult class, there's just a lot of OWL assignments. But, the OWLs are really helpful and prepare you for the exams very well....I lowkey only learned from the OWLs. She takes attendance through iclickers so you have to go to most lectures, but if you can't make a couple she records all of them and uploads her notes.
As an intro to chem class, and a student who has not taken chem since sophomore year of high school, she expects us to have a lot of prior knowledge. She discourages questions and moves quickly when students are lost. I taught myself everything outside of class because lectures rarely gave any insight on how to complete the homework. Get a tutor.
Every orgo course is lecture heavy, its just the best way to learn it. Al-Hariri is very patient and can explain concepts in multiple different ways. All the orgo profs at umass are great, but her explanations worked better for me than for some of the other chem profs I've encountered.
OWLs were tedious but definitely prepared me for exams. She moves quickly but as long as you complete the optional OWLs on material you need extra practice with you will be fine.
she's a great person but okay as a teacher. her lectures aren't that clear but if you took ap chem in high school this should be an easy class. she is pretty understanding. there were 3 exams and a final. i would only take her again if there were no other good teachers available.
PLEASE READ ME: Professor Al-Hariri has a pretty thick accent that you cannot really understand half the time. Her lectures were pretty difficult to watch and learn from but her i-clicker questions were really helpful and engaging. If you cannot learn from her lectures, that's okay. I mainly learned CHEM111 from the OWL homework and practice exams.
Professional Al-Hariri is a great professor that really wants you to succeed. She provides many resources for you. She does have an accent but I could understand her. There were 4 major tests and owl homeworks to complete. Really suggest completing them because I used them to learn the material so I understand what was happening in the lecture.
Professor Al- Hariri is extremely qualified and is very easy to understand. She leaves a lot of room for questions during lectures and talks about available SI and UTA sessions every class so you know your options for help. As long as you understand homework and do the practice exams, you will do really well in the class.
I loved Lara, she is truly a great professor even if chem is not your thing definitely recommend taking any chem course with her and you will do great.
Prof. Lara made organic chemistry 2 so easy. Her iClicker questions are usually difficult so that the questions you see on the homework or exam will not faze you at all. They highlight different scenarios that you may encounter. She's clear in showing mechanisms and I haven't had to touch the textbook all semester because she teaches very well.
I took Orgo 2 with her so it was a naturally difficult class, but her lectures were efficient and clear and helped a lot with my comprehension of the material.
No surprise that Orgo 2 is hard, but the way Dr. Lara teaches makes it doable! The best thing you can do for yourself is attend every lecture. She does lots of iclicker questions, many of which are tricky, but they prepare you well for hw and exams. She provdies lots of resources to help you, and there are a few opportunities for extra credit.
Professor Al-Hariri made Orgo 2, a very hard class, possible and enjoyable. Her lectures are very clear and she often clears up any points of confusion. Lots of Iclicker questions which are very helpful. Many resources available outside of class. Your grade will reflect the amount of effort you put in. Overall great class with a great professor.
Lara was a good lecturer with a pretty good setup for the class. Orgo 2 will be very difficult with any professor, but she did her best to make it manageable. She isn't great with the little things, such as getting test results out quickly or setting the correct due dates for homework, , but she was solid overall
Orgo 2 is much harder than orgo 1 but Prof Al-Hariri did a good job. I thought that it was hard to pay attention in lecture sometimes and I highly dislike the way she takes notes but she cares about your success and learning. She is VERY slow at grading exams though (which I don't understand since we take them online).
For me, Lara was a little below average. She is a good professor but does not have much personality, which made it hard to pay attention. If you are able to pay attention and put in the extra work required for orgo, you will do well. Outside of lecture, I feel she did a subpar job of managing minute details for the class. Overall, she is fine.
I am not a fan of the way Lara lectures, her explanations feel so confusing sometimes. But, she is very kind and she offers a lot of extra credit opportunities. As someone who is generally average at chem, I had to put in a LOT of effort into this class. SI sessions were helpful to me. Everyone says it, but take advantage of every resource!!
Fantastic professor! If you put in the work by going to class and understanding the material, it will come to you easily. If not, go to TA/SI sessions or her extra credit PLTL sessions and you are set for an easy A for the semester.
Gives a ton of opportunities to practice, both in graded homework, non-graded worksheets, & practice exams. There's like 20 points of extra credit over the semester. She makes it easy to pass the class, extremely doable to get a good grade, and you can absolutely get an A if you put the effort in. Take O chem with Al-Hariri if you have the chance.
She is one of the best professors at Umass. She makes sense. She explained the concepts in an efficient and easy-to-understand way and you walked away actually understanding what you are learning. Her exams are fair. As long as you do a lot of practice questions and make an effort. It should not be bad at all. A lot of iClicker practice. Fantastic.
Very kind professor who truly cares about student success. Lectures can be difficult to follow and explanations are not always clear, but there are many ways to practice the problems. Memorizing reactions and understanding how they work is very important, do the practice worksheets, participate in PLTL.
she's the best professor I've ever had. She truly cares about student success and is excited to teach chemistry. She answers questions readily and it has been a breeze to meet with her if necessary. I wish I could have her for future classes but I'm a visiting student over the summer session. lectures are easy to understand, just take lots of notes
Great professor, truly cares about making sure you understand the material. Honestly, class isn't hard so long as you do the OWL and pay attention in lectures. 3 Midterms, 1 Final. Online, 25 questions. Make sure you study well, since they're small tests. Overall, not bad at all. Labs are annoyingly long, but easy enough. Always take this prof!
Al-Hariri cares about her students a lot by using Echo360 and giving lots of accommodations for those who need it. She carefully explains all topics in different ways so that students can fully understand her. She gave only multiple choice exams on OWL too! She's great professor with great energy!
While she is very knowledgeable about chemistry she expects you to have lots of prior knowledge on the subject. There were several instances that the material covered in class did not match the homework or exams and you have to put in lots of time practicing out of class to understand concepts if you do not have much prior chemistry knowledge.
Chemistry is super hard. Dr. Al- Hariri does make learning the subject a little bit easier with all of her examples. She's super understanding, and offers lots of ways to get help if you are struggling. I especially recommend her if you have little to no chem background like I did.
Prof Al-Hariri is amazing. She is super caring and understanding. Highly advise you go to lectures because she does cover a lot, and she does a lot of iclicker based questions which also count up for participation. You only have weekly OWLS for hw and the tests are all multiple choice! Def recommend her.
The hw for chem 111 is the same for every class but Prof. Al-Hariri gives you can opportunity to make up work which can help be a grade saver. The practice problems are exactly like the exams which are all multiple choice. She also does exam reviews during the lecture. Some chapters felt rushed but the content was usually easier.
Dr. Lara was a great professor. She had plenty of examples and exam reviews that were helpful for the exams. I had no chem background and struggled learning the subject but her lectures, iclicker questions, and exam reviews were helpful. The labs were super easy. Very lecture/content heavy, iclicker questions for attendance, and weekly OWLs.
Dr. Al-Hariri was by far the best professor I've had so far. She is a great lecturer who clearly explains concepts and readily answers student questions. The homework is very reflective of the exams and helps master the concepts and she offers many opportunities for additional help and feedback.
In high school I hated chem, but I really enjoyed Professor Al-Hariri's class. There's a good amount of homework but it is super helpful in understanding concepts and studying for exams. We also got practice tests that were similar to each exam. I'd recommend her class if you need to take CHEM111.
Dr. Al Hariri is extremely kind and truly cares about your success. The homework is definitely doable if you plan for it, the quizzes are all multiple choice and there is nothing unexpected on them. She is great at explaining her material and is very accessible outside of class. Definitely take her class if you can!
Overall you can tell she really cares about this topic and wants students to do well. Do all her extra credit opportunities, iclicker, PLTL. She can be hard to understand at times and forgets to explain the basics in major topics, so watching other videos and other resources help. She assumes we knew the first steps so she would skip to the 3rd.
Prof. Lara cares abt student's success but it's up to u to study and grasp the material. I think Orgo is a tough subject overall. I watched youtube to grasp the material better coz the online lectures move fast, she wants you to already know the basics from Gen Chem. Take advantage of all the points she gives in class for OWL Hwk, Extra credit.
Lara is a really sweet and caring professor! She's really good with answering questions and making sure people understand the content in a meaningful way. Exams weren't very difficult and questions were fair game compared with lecture. There was so much homework, though, so be systematic with how you get it done.
She was a good teacher. I took IB HL biology therefore it was a boring class for me since it was a lot of repeat but she is a great teacher for people that are learning these concepts for the first time. She cares a lot about her students, answers questions and provides resources to study. The PTLT program is really nice as well for extra credit.
She goes very fast but leaves a lot of time for practice. She provides a lot of resources (worksheets, ch. summaries, etc). There are multiple min. effort extra credit opportunities.
Easily the best organic chemistry professor that the school, if you're going to take orgo, take it with her. Her lectures are fast paced but she does a bunch of practice problems and in class exam reviews before every exam.
The sweetest professor ever. She offers extra credit throughout the semester and does a lot of practice problems during lecture (especially before exams). Organic chem is hard but she helps make it more enjoyable and understandable. Definitely take her if you can!
This queen may not have the best lecturing abilities, but she offers you every which way to learn the material and get a good grade. She makes her exams sound hard but taking them is a different story. She offers so much extra credit. Quizzes are hard so have friends and do the PLTL!
Lara is one of the best teachers ive ever had in my life. She is very kind and clearly wants her students to learn the material and succeed. She does a ton of practice problems in class which really helped me understand the material.
Made it very easy to understand and provides lots of extra credit opportunities. I wished she taught first semester orgo too.
Orgo 2 with Professor Al-Hariri was far easier than gen-chem in my opinion. As long as you review and practice outside of class, you will do well. The exams were always easier than the quizzes and practice exams and there were never any surprises. Al-Hariri includes lots of opportunities to learn material depending on individual learning styles.
AWESOME professor, gives so many resources that make studying super easy. i was sharing the flashcards she gave us with my friends in other classes because they are so helpful. answers questions well, makes sure to go over the underlying mechanisms well, explains her teaching methodoly in detail, just a really fantastic professor. hugely recommend.
A truly infamous class guided by the best possible professor you could ever get. Her lessons are organized perfectly so that additional material is perfectly sequential and relevant to what you just learned, combined with super well-structured lectures, slides, and extra practice material beyond homework. She's amazing and hands down the best
Look, if you want someone to really give you the WHY something happens, she isn't the one. But if you just want to do well in the class (pretty much everyone), she will make sure you at least pass. Her exams are honestly not difficult if you are on top of things (coming from someone who SUCKS at chem). Also offers a shitton of extra credit points.
Professor Al-Hariri is a caring and supportive teacher. The class has a lot of homework, but it's helpful for learning the material. Using unstuckstudy and other resources like practice tests can make studying more efficient.
Very caring professor, my best professor so far. Chem 111 is a tough course and she moves very fast through the topics but guidelines are very clear and there's opportunities for extra credit. Tons of OWL assignments but they are just like the test. She responds very fast to emails and cares about your learning!
dr lara is such a caring professor who does everything she can to set students up for success. if you want to do well, take the practice iclicker problems in class seriously because they are the best way to make sure you know the material, and sign up for PLTL! if you put effort in you will do well, she explains concepts well and really cares!
Hard to understand sometimes. Very boring lectures, easy to lose focus.
Her lectures cover what you need to know. If you pay attention and review them, you'll do great. She gives extra credit, summarized handouts, and is a great lecturer. The practice exams are key for doing well on the exams, they're very similar. It takes some work but if you want a professor who'll make sure to help you do well, it's Lara.
After a rough highschool chem experience, this class totally changed my mind on the subject. Lara is a very nice lady, who really cares for student success. She provides a lot of material and extra problems for students to study with. The exams are fairly easy and very similar to the practice exams/homeworks. 10/10 class would recommend to anyone.
Dr. Al Hariri was a very kind professor. She truly cared about how the students performed and gave us the resources to improve our grades. That being said, the material was pretty difficult for me and there was so much to remember going into the exams. I found myself studying for the exams for hours, just to get a mediocre or below average grade.
I love Professor Al-Hariri, she genuinely cared about other students' success and provides lots of extra materials to help students study. Sometimes her lectures were just a little boring, but for the most part they explained the material pretty well. The quizzes and tests were fairly easy. Would definitely recommend for Chem 111!
Pretty easy class but exams weighed a lot and were multiple choice, so very easy to get a B in the class. Iclickers for attendance and she does have an accent but it's pretty easy to understand.
Thick accent and sometimes boring lectures. Owl assignments were difficult sometimes. Overall decent teacher but required extra effort to pay attention and learn during lectures.
Lara's slideshows are organized and easy to follow. She explains concepts to a great ability, but I think there is some room for improvement. Homework was manageable if done over time. A sweet woman who you can tell cares for her students success.
For orgo 2 she was good at doing practice problems while learning the content and before exam she would dedicate a class to reviewing the chapters, then the class right before the exam she would go over problems on practice exam that most got wrong. Answered questions in class with detail. HW and quizzes weren't that bad. Would recommend!!
Very nice and willing to answer questions. Lots of practice questions included in the slides. iClicker is kind of annoying in general, but they're only graded for participation so it's an easy A. No extra credit at all. Would recommend PLTL for this class.
If you pick any prof for 262 pick her. She's very patient and gives ec. Material is a lot but she picks the easiest examples from every unit for exams. I got a 100 on 3 exams.
I LOVE LARA!! Best chemistry professor I have had! There is so much repetition and resources for learning; she explains everything so well and clearly shows that she cares about her students succeeding. She also gives many extra credit opportunities, like watching videos! I was so scared to take Orgo 2, but this was better than Orgo 1! TAKE HER!!!
Lara explains everything very clearly, teaches at a pace I could actually keep up with, and has forgiving grading criteria. It's very obvious she cares about her students and wants us to do well. I was pretty apprehensive going into this class but came out with an A and a genuine interest in organic chemistry.
If you do bad in this class it is probably your fault since she gives you literally every resource possible to succeed and hella extra credit. Lectures were long and painful sometimes, but she prepares you for the worst with difficult iclicker questions and tough practice exams. The actual exams were light work. Lara is so pookie bear. What a gem.
Orgo 2 is difficult no matter who you take it with but Lara makes it as easy as possible. Her lectures are useful, she offers extra credit, and her exams are straightforward. I'm not going to say this course was easy but if you used all of your resources and put in the work, it's definitely possible to be very successful.
This is a hard class because of the content but she is a great lecturer. She provides so much support and materials to help with studying. The exams are similar to practice exams, they are not too difficult. I loved this class!
This was my second class with Dr Al-Hariri, and she was amazing. She made understanding the mechanisms behind chemical reactions simple, and expectations were always clear. Orgo II is a class where you have to put in work, but she makes it much easier. She also offers lots of extra credit, and real exams are very similar to the practice exams.
Loved my class with Dr. Lara! Orgo 2 isn't easy by any means, but she offers extra credit opportunities, worksheets, and more to help students practice. Exams mimic in-class questions and practice exams to a T. It's difficult, but if you put in the work, you will pass! Overall she's a lovely person who genuinely cares about her students' learning.
Left class feeling like I didn't even need to study for the exams, her lectures were clear and well-structured and she provided lots of practice. Made Orgo 2 easy.
Very nice professor! She uses lots of i-clicker questions and OWL textbook homework. Exams are all multiple choice and very similar to the owl practice exams. She has a thick accent that makes it hard to understand her lectures at times. If you get confused, look up the topic on youtube or try the optional OWL to see it explained differently.
I took her class a few years ago, but I think it is important to commend amazing teachers who go above and beyond. She really gives you a lot of opportunities to succeed and she is great at lecturing. Definitely recommend her for Orgo
I'm almost done with chem 111 and just had to compliment Lara and her teaching. She is genuinely such a sweet woman and you can tell she really cares about your success. She lets you redeem yourself even if you didn't understand content at first by offering to drop your lowest exam grade and double your final if you do better. Clearly cares a lot!
Lara is an amazing professor. She teaches well and is very caring and passionate about chemistry. In class lectures are very important to attend and are graded via iClicker. The course can be challenging at times but she does a pretty good job at making it make more sense. Probably the best professor to have for CHEM111
Dr.Lara is an amazing teacher. She is very considerate and passionate about Chem and her students. She truly cares for everyone of them and wants to see them all succeed. Class is really easy, the tests are very easy, and the final was also very light.
this is my second time taking this course with her because I failed It last semester. it's just really hard material. she's very kind and understanding though and I think she's a good lecturer. if you're willing to work hard I think this is a good class.
Lara is a teacher who cares about the success of her students. She explains material in lecture well. Her iclicker questions are helpful and great practice for exams. She gives 4 extensions on homework, and the practice exams are very similar to the actual ones. Best teacher!
If you start thinking of this class as a cooking class and the reagents as ingredients, you will do well. Flashcards are you friend and take ANY extra credit opportunity Dr. Al-Hariri gives you! It will all add up and give you an unexpected boost in the end. She's loved for a reason!
Dr. Lara is clear with her expectations of you during this class. Her practice exams were almost exact to the exams on owl. For exams, go over each lecture and make a cheat sheet for each chapter. Use this sheet when going over ch review problems on owl and iclicker questions on the slides.
