Dr Hutson is clear and concise. She is really helpful if you do make an effort to seek her out. Lovely professor!
Professor Hutson does teach well. She lets you bring a cheat sheet for the test. But I still failed because it is a hard class. The average grade for the 2 tests of the class was a 60. Very few people passed with 80-90. I think her exams are a bit hard and confusing. She is a good teacher but, the class I think its not easy at all.
Lara is cool teacher. She did not make the test so easy and the lecture is fun also
Wonderful professor - Clear, dedicated, and very helpful.
She just drags on, on one topic and the lectures are just boring. No ones goes to the lectures because we can just listen to the online one. However, she actually tells what's on the test. It's still hard.
Very clear and Helpful
She is very helpful, very clear, and the slides contain everything you need. I never took the wrapping off of my textbook and got an A. Tests are difficult, but you are allowed a cheat sheet, so it evens out. I took it just because it was required and it ended up my favorite class. The lab portion can be hard due to weekly quizzes.
Wonderful teacher and a great person. Always helpful and understanding but gave a good challenge with the tests.
Her lectures are wonderful. It may seem boring but she does add a *bit* of humor to them once in a while. It helps to attend lectures; she explains and adds a bit more detail to the slides and sometimes, those extra bits are included on the exam. Cheat sheets are allowed but not all that helpful.
Bio 200 is not an easy class, but she made it a lot easier to understand. She speaks very clear and concise. Her along with Poulin are the best Bio 200 teachers so you have two good teachers to choose from! :)
Her tests are difficult and confusing, superboring and low voice.
We did not get cheat sheets, her exams were kind of difficult, but more than anything her lectures dragged on and she would go wayyy too fast.
Her class is boring, don't take her. we can just reading textbook instead of going her lectures. Tests are difficult and confusing and not easy to figure out the correct answer.
Her class was boring. I didn't use the textbook. Tests are quite hard. She is a great lady, and she expects all of us to learn whatever material she throws at us. It's college. Study hard, get an A. DON'T CHEAT. You ruin it for everybody else.
This class isn't an easy A. The labs are long, but they help in learning the course material. Read the textbook (haha, right? No, but seriously it helps.) Make SURE you do the practice questions she sends out every weekend, because THEY DO show up on the exam. Go to class. She does clicker questions for attendance.
This class is extremely difficult unless one has a strong background in chemistry and biology. She does not explain things very well and the tests are extremely difficult to figure out the right answer. She lectures very quickly and uses terms that she doesn't explain so it is hard to follow.
Dr. Hutson is very knowledgeable but can be very hard to pay attention to. Lectures can go above your head at times, but going to her office hours help clarify things. Do the practice questions and you'll be good for the class, as she tends to reuse questions. Reading the textbook when you don't understand things helps. Highly recommend her for 201
She's a sweetheart and probably the fairest professor I have encountered thus far (I've taken two classes with her). Not only does she get the point across, she tests you on the material she teaches very straightforwardly (most professor are ridiculous, but she is not!). Make sure you listen to lectures, study a week in advance, & you'll get an A.
She goes quick in lectures and I think it is hard to keep up however lectures are recorded. Lectures tend to drag on however everything you need to know is more or less in lectures. DO HER PRACTICE QUESTIONS they basically are the tests. Very helpful in office hours. Semi-good curve at the end.
Her tests were fair but she goes way too fast in lecture. Should've taken Hennessey, heard he was better!
Hardest class ever!! Don't take her, take the other professor. You have to have a clear understanding in bio if you want her because she goes fast and tests are hard!
Absolutely amazing. First science professor at UB who isn't out to fail you! Gives practice tests that are very true to actual tests. Also the textbook provided gives the lecture slides with in depth descriptions for each slide, so class is not mandatory. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH ANY OTHER PROFESSOR.
Tests are hard. barely any curve. do not take bio with Hutson
It's good if you go class or at least watch the lectures online. she's pretty straight forward about what you need to know and do to do well! used the textbook literally for one question.
Go to her office hours, do the practice questions she posts every week, study a week in advance for her exams and you will do great. This is a difficult class, but she is a good teacher and she is always willing to help you. Just be careful, if she is annoyed by you, she will definitely let you know.
Hutson is tough, she goes pretty quick in lecture, and really expects students to put in a lot of time, which you should if you want to do well in her class. Do the practice questions, they usually show up on exams! Barely any curve, go over material constantly if you want to do well.
Hutson is tough, she goes pretty quick in lecture, and really expects students to put in a lot of time, which you should if you want to do well in her class. Do the practice questions, they usually show up on exams! Barely any curve, go over material constantly if you want to do well. Must have in-depth knowledge of the material.
I didn't take AP Bio in high school (or any science electives for that matter) and I felt extremely lost. I worked my butt off in her course and I ended up with a B+. If you're not a hard worker, you won't get a good grade. I don't know if I've worked harder in any course before! Take Hutson if you're up for a challenge.
Took Hutson for BIO 200,201,205. We have become close over the years and she's a great lady. Her lectures are straight to the point. She posts lecture audits so don't have to go to class. Her office hours clears everything up. Her exams are easy if you learn the practice exams/ extra questions. What she teaches in on the exam, textbook not needed.
It's biochem, so there's a lot of info. HW are easy grades, so do them on time. Highly advise you to do well on the first 5 exams so you don't need to take the cumulative final since it is optional. Go to lecture and do the readings, you'll most likely get at least a B in the class. Practice exams are exactly like the real exams. Def recommend!
Dr. Lara Hutson is a great prof. Her lectures are pretty clear and the practice questions in class really help; she often recycles material from the practice questions and tests. Her lectures are usually posted so if you miss a lot of classes you'll be alright as long as you review a lot.
Hutson is a great lecturer. Her lectures are very interesting. Do the assigned readings before lecture and take good notes. Exams have questions similar to the practice exams and TopHat questions.
Shes an awesome teacher. Her lectures are interesting and not boring. She answer any questions you need. Her exams aren't bad as long as you study a lot and do the practice questions she gives. Enjoy going to class because its a fun class. She gives extra credit TopHat points which help. Totally recommend her for Bio 201.
After taking Evo Bio with Poulin, this class was a breath of fresh air. Hutson is amazing and so sweet and funny. As long as you do and understand the practice exams and questions you will do fine on the tests, as a lot of the questions from there show up on the actual exam. Highly recommend her!
Retook BIO201 with her after I took BIO205 with her in the fall. She's very clear on her lectures and her lectures have a lot of notes written on them already so you just need to study those. Gives weekly lecture questions for practice and some of it appears on the exam. No cumulative. Definitely recommend her over the other BIO201 professors.
There is no homework for this class which is a good and bad thing because your grade is dependent solely on exams, Tophat questions, and lab. It is a lot of material and you definitely need to study for the exams if you want a good grade but she does post practice exams and practice questions beforehand and the final is not cumulative.
I have absolutely no regrets about taking BIO201 with Hutson. She was such a nice lady, very intellectual, and she explains everything very clearly. Her notes are perfect and explain everything you need to know for the exams. Her final isn't cumulative and it's copy and pasted from the practice questions. However, do NOT blow the class off.
Dr. Hutson's Cell Biology class was extremely interesting. The class is divided into three parts: The Fundamentals of Life, Cell Energetics, and Heredity. During the heredity unit, she ties a good portion of her lectures to cancer development and evolution, which is super cool! This class is one of those classes where hard work DEFINITELY pays off!
There's like 80 clicker questions throughout the semester, but it's only graded out of 40, so if you get 40 of them right you get 100% credit (the clicker questions are also extra credit). After that I stopped showing up, watched lectures online, found that more helpful than going to lecture. Hybrid lab sucks, super boring and pointless.
She is an amazing professor. Go to lecture and do the top hat (clicker) questions. They help. The best thing about this teacher is her practice tests. They are like identical to the test. 90% of the test comes from her practice tests. I got an A in class and I would take her again.
Dr Hutson is bae. She is by far the best introductory biology professor. Take cell and biochem with her. Seriously take it with her. Like seriously.
Dr. Hutson is probably one of the best professors I have ever had, seriously if you ever get the chance to take her, do it. She explains everything so well in lecture and that's all you really need for exams, textbook is helpful but not extremely necessary, Hutson is very clear about what you need to know to do well. Study!
She answers our questions in class unlike most proffesors she seems to care more than normal
Best professor I've had at UB so far. She makes the class interesting and speaks with passion and shows a very strong understanding of every topic we discuss. I would take her again for sure
Her class is easy, and if you study you will get an A however as a teacher she is borderline horrendous. Its a biology class, why does express her political views? Or her husband who 'knows everything about energy and makes tons of money'? Coming from a school of diverse political views, she comes off as obnoxious and unprofessional at best
Hutson began class by stating that she is not a professor and is a dr and should be addressed as such, and liked to flaunt her degrees. She has daily top hat questions but does not give students enough time to actually think of an answer. Not very caring about her students and is full of herself. Would not recommend.
Dr. Hutson is a pretty solid choice for BIO 201. She gives a tons of practice questions and practice exams, both of which are identical to the real tests. On the downside, her lectures are super boring and monotone, there are also clicker questions. She also isn't the best at explaining things but the TA's luckily make up for that.
. She gives student every detail you should know about the test. Even though her lecture seems boring, she teaches well. Her lecture slide is very organized. Make sure that you understand every detail she emphasize instead of memorizing. Also practice test is very similar to the actual. Didn't study but no time, then go over the practice exam! AAA
She is a good professor but its really hard to get an A in the class because you are only allowed to lose 40 points in the whole semester to get an A. She does give you weekly homework but its only 10 questions and help to study for the exam because she recycles questions but tends to flip/reverse the questions.
You have to go to lecture because of the Tophat Question points, which worse 40 points. The exam is easy if you have done the practice questions on UBlearns for many times, I would say about 70% of the exam is practice problem. But be careful with the change of word.
Lara is a really nice woman and wants everyone to succeed in her class. She will go over things numerous times until people understand. She always takes time to ask if the class has questions and answers questions after class. She gives practice questions before the exam which almost mimics exams. Great professor.
Great professor but she won't curve even if your 0.1% of an A. Still prefer her over Snyder for BIO 205
Best bio professor at UB hands down. Amazing teacher and very knowledgeable.
Dr. Hutson is very intelligent and that's actually what makes her class so difficult. She talks extremely fast and I think overestimates most students' prior knowledge. Fortunately, her class is extremely forgiving with many extra credit assignments, easy labs, and hw assignments. Managed to pull off an A after doing awful on her 1st exam.
Hutson is a great professor. She is really passionate about what she is teaching that she goes into depth about it which may confuse people during her exams because she asks very broad questions.
Hutson's slide shows were very broad but we were expected to know much more. She would talk very fast and it was difficult to understand everything she would say. She would ask multiple clicker questions in class many which were from the current lecture which she expected us to understand already. She assigned homework every week, exams were hard.
Probably the best Bio proffesor at UB. She doesn't try to trick you and makes it so simple to prepare for her exams. There's 6 exams, but that benefits you, because she drops one. Her practice exams are basically the exams and she really cares. Someone who isn't great at Bio, can do well in her class with a good amount of effort.
Professor Hutson is a compassionate teacher. For this class, the only way to succeed is to read the text and go to her lectures! For my section lectures were recorded, but don't rely on these because you will get backed up. She does speak fast so I suggest reviewing lectures prior to class. 6 tests, but one is dropped. Use the practice tests!
The fact that she said she likes to give As but her exams are hard/ tricky even for people like me who study for this class everyday + she doesnt curve ! So you must earn your grade.. A is not easy and she wouldnt give it even if u deserved it and close to it .
She should know that 45 minutes is not enough for a biochem test! Its an important class for prehealth students and she pretends like she cares BUT she dos NOT care ! SHE DOES NOT CARE THAT YOU STUDIED AND JUST NEED FEW MORE MINUTES !!!+ her confusing lectures !!!! + She goes over time for lecturing but not for us to take a hard test! Worst prof
Dr. Hutson is an amazing professor. If you go to class and take good notes as well as read the textbook you'll do fine. Her exams are fair and she gives 2 practice exams which are really good indicators of what the actual exam will be like. The textbook is personalized to what she expects you to know so there's no extra information.
Clicker questions make you go to class. Very knowledgeable professor, knows what she's talking about, but can tend to make you feel really dumb if you don't know something... Difficult course, but very good professor
Lara has great lectures that I didn't mind watching. She does talk fast so watching them recorded helped. Overall she's so nice and wants you to be as excited about Biochem as she is. If you cannot make her office hours though she recommends you go see her TAs instead of her which can be frustrating. This class was a lot of work but worth it.
Great professor with engaging lectures. Very energetic and explains everything thoroughly.
This professor is a good professor, and if you have the desire to do well in her class, you will enjoy your time
she is amazing. and give u many opportunities to pass her class. Just rewatch her lectures. She gives u hw assignments and clicker questions in class. Attend and you will pass. Attend help sessions
Goes FAST, + covers a lot of material in ever class. MUST keep up or you will get buried under a ton of information without enough time to absorb it all. Also beware -- her tests are LONG, almost 40 questions, and you only have 45 minutes to take them. If you are a slow test taker, pick someone else. She's incredibly articulate + great lecturer
She is a pretty good professor. She does tend to cover a lot of material in a 50 minute class and goes fast. This course is pretty difficult, and a lot of terms may be confusing. The tests may be about 40 multiple choice questions, but you must pay attention. She offers extra credit, and you should take those for your advantage. Get to know her.
She loves little trick questions, you DO have to pay attention but her lectures are recorded. She does iClicker questions, has help sessions, weekly hw and a lot of extra credit opportunities. You do have to study and review but its nothing crazy and she is really sweet and caring.
At first she seemed a bad lecturer, but do not be deterred by this as when you get used to her teaching style, it is worth it in the end. She gives weekly homework's but they are very very helpful for studying and understanding the course material. Her exams are very similar to her homework's. Do not take Hennessy as his tests are usually harder.
Loved her, she is very understanding and helps student out thoroughly. However, her lectures seem very fast paced and it's sometimes very hard to take notes while she is speaking. The tests are very easy if you are able to understand the material. Don't slack in class, or you won't be able to pass the class! she also doesn't curve the grades.
Study ahead of time for exams bc it's a lot of memorization especially for the final. MAKE SURE u go to class bc you'll be granted points for iclicker n if u have over the required amount it will become extra credit. Go to TA review sessions, bc it helps clarify any doubts and u can get help with the hw.
I thought Dr. Hutsons class was very interesting. She was very open to questions and was overall very kind and helpful. The class consists of 5 exams with an optional final and weekly homework assignments. The tests were of average difficulty and were very similar to the practice tests she posted. I would highly recommend taking her for any class
She's a very good professor and explains her topics very well. However, you do have to re-watch the lectures in order to pick up the things that will help you on the exams. The clicker questions tend to show up on the exams a-lot, so pay attention to them. The concepts are hard, but with her explanations and practice problems you will pick it up.
Dr. Hutson is a great professor. I personally loved learning the concepts in her class. She goes a little fast in lecture but rewatching the lectures will maximize your understanding. Practice questions will help you so much. She is quite intimidating in office hours, as if you say something wrong she will call you out, but she means the best. :)
It is a hard course just make SURE YOU REWATCH THE LECTURES. AND U WILL BE FINE
As long as you study and listen to the lectures, you'll pass. Don't take the class expecting it to be easy bc it's not. Reef/ iclicker used every class which is annoying
Great prof
This teacher has been my favorite science teacher so far at UB. She definitely gives you challenging material but its extremely interesting and if you do her practice online problems religiously you will do great on the exams! She uses in class questions but they end up boosting your grade at the end of the semester and she gives ALOT of extracredit
This is one of the hardest classes I have taken at UB. Dr. Hutson goes through lectures fast and is not good at answering questions. It is so easy to fall behind in this course. I did not like her class and would not take another course with her again!
Lara is a decent professor, she was over rated. She will tell you they don't take attendance but she does it anyway just to throw you off. When ever you try to ask question, she won't answer none of your question so don't expect anything. Professor claim she will alway available for question but she won't ready to answer any of it
Shes very sweet and genuinely cares about what shes teaching. The class is very interesting and she gives tons of opportunities for extra credit.
I know a lot of people like her, I just I don't like her teaching style. She goes over materials so fast in class, it is so hard for me to catch up her speed while trying to digest what she just said 5 seconds ago. The tests are very easy, and there are a bunch of office hours, but her lectures are just noononono....
I really like Dr. Hutson. She knows what she's talking about and I like the facts she gives at the beginning of each lecture. Her clicker questions are confusing and sometimes asks things before she explains them. Weekly homework and has flipped classrooms (you need the book for this). Her exams are fair, as long as you know the material.
Great professor. You aren't only graded on exams, you are also graded on homework and given few extra credit opportunities. She is very clear and understanding. Her tests are fair/easy, the questions are usually the same as her homework and review questions. As long as you practice & study her review questions, you will do great on the exams.
Best professor for Bio201. Goes over A LOT in lecture and goes very fast, but lectures are recorded. She takes iClicker so go to class. She gives you so many helpful resources to succeed in this class, but you have to put the time and effort into studying. Very approachable and kind prof. Also, ALWAYS do practice problems before exams.
Professor Hutson is VERY knowledgable, ask her anything related to Biology and she will answer with no hesitation; she is a true legend hands down. She is very sweet and caring and desires the best for her students. The practice problems are very similar to the exams so do them! She is always available to help even outside her office hours.
My experience with professor Hutson was for both online and in-person classes. The textbook for this course is needed as there are multiple hw assignments that require it. You will be asked questions every lecture and those will be counted for credit. Bio LAB counts in your overall grade for this course.
Dr. Hutson is awesome. Her lectures need to be rewatched and material seems overwhelming at first but she gives so much practice questions and extra credit that help you pinpoint the important things she wants you to learn. I wish I can take biochem with her.
Dr. Hutson was my favorite teacher/professor I have ever had in my life. The class material was very interesting, I enjoyed learning from Dr. Hutson every lecture. The material is made clear and what you need to do to succeed is very straight forward if you do your best. I loved this class and am honestly sad it is over.
Hutson is brilliant and knows her stuff. She truly cares about her students doing well in her classes and isn't out to fail you. Her classes aren't the easiest option but you can really gain knowledge from them. Test questions are similar to practice exams and she gives a good amount of extra credit to help boost grades.
Nice Chances
God awful professor. Not enough time for the tests. Also thinks she's better than everyone because she wrote a lab manual.
Love Professor Hutson, she is one of the few that cares for her students especially during COVID. Although this class is not a curved science class, you have many opportunities for a good grade. The only slight problem I had was understanding the lectures. She often used words like "this" and "that" which made things confusing and unclear.
Dr. Hutson really cares about her students. Lots of students emailed her about not having enough time for Exam and she offered a 2nd Optional exam which have extended time limit in the following week which boost up our grades a lot. Altho her lecture may be a little bit confusing, if you keep working on the questions, you will get those.
I loved having Prof. Hutson. She's very articulate and seems like she actually knows what she's teaching. She was also very flexible given the pandemic. Her lectures cover a lot of information, so don't get behind.
This was one of my best profs yet. Very nice professor with very clear grading expectations and course format. She gives you all you need to succeed. If you work enough, you will get a great grade. No questions asked. She is also extremely understanding.
Professor Hutson explained the notes really well, so if you pay attention in class you will succeed. She was very understanding during covid and offered some extra credit.
Best professor I've ever had. She gives you all you need to succeed. You can tell she really cares about her students. Go over the homework and practice exams many times and you will do fine. Very nice professor with very clear grading expectations and course format.
Professor Hutson is amazing! I was not doing well at first and met with her and she told me exactly what I needed to change & once I did, I started doing great. For her exams, just redo the practice questions a bunch of times and you will be very successful in this course. Her lectures are very interesting and engaging, even online.
Dr. Hutson is an amazing biology professor. She puts a lot of effort in to simplify the material for students and make it easier to understand. Additionally, she focuses a lot on different experiments in the scientific field, which is beneficial to anyone pursuing biology in the future. She also offers a lot of extra credit and has very fair exams.
Dr. Hutson was extremely understanding this past semester. She gave us so many opportunities to improve our grades through extra credit and more. The exams were not bad at all, just do the homework and practice exams several times!! I highly recommend Dr. Hutson for cell bio!
Professor Hutson did an amazing job teaching cell bio (I took her class in spring 2021). Her lectures were clear and easy to follow. She assigns weekly homework with multiple attempts, so always do your best and look at your notes. She offers extra credit opportunities. Just review the homework and practice it (along with mock exams) to do well.
Makes you watch lecture videos prior to class and Quizzes you on it. Very hard to understand her in class explanations.
30-40 min lectures posted in bw classes that you watch then do questions in class. Wld be an ok format if the questions weren't so complicated and based on 1 random detail she mentioned for 5secs in lecture. Also will mention lectures arent easy to follow at all (make sure to take own notes and rewatch). Exams r very easy compared to practice qs.
flipped classroom setup is terrible, often wastes the first 20 minutes babbling about covid or some random experiment. the rest of the time is spent on iclicker questions, she rarely explains why the answer is what it is. if the majority of people answer wrong she says "okayyy lets do that again, talk to your neighbor" we don't know just teach us!
If you're very invested in learning about cell biology, then maybe this is the class for you. But if you don't care about it and are taking it for credit, DO NOT take this professor. You are required to watch lecture videos before attending actual lecture and are quizzed every day. On top of still having homework. Other profs are better
Dr.Hutson is one of the best professor I've had so far. I will definitely take her course again.
Dr. Hutson is a great professor.
It is very clear that she got comfortable making videos as a substitution for teaching during the pandemic; she doesn't teach during lecture time. You have to watch the lecture before going to class to answer questions about the lecture in class. It makes no sense. She doesn't go in-depth about anything in the videos and the questions are tough.
She makes you watch lecture videos prior to every in person lecture. She will then use up half of your class time talking about Covid or stories that arent useful for the course. She does not explain the material well in class and you can barely hear her talking. Makes you answer IClicker questions that are hard and doesnt explain them.
although i disliked the flipped classroom style.. you get points for answers questions in class & watching the videos. cell bio is not simple/kinda boring but if you can answer the clicker questions in class you will do well on the exams given the questions are similar or easier. Dr.Hudson does a good job at making tests fair, so you can do well.
Dr. Hutson is easily the best Cell Bio professor at UB. Everyone complaining about lecture videos and in class questions simply did not want to put in the effort. She offered almost 30 pts of extra credit, I ended up with over a 100% in the class. Material on practice test was just like the exams. Easy to study.
Dr. Hutson is very passionate about what she teaches, and is without a doubt the best Cell Bio prof at UB. Take her if doing for credit. Offered a lot of extra credit and exams are pretty simple if you study. People who complain about the iclicker and lecture videos are just lazy, class is easy to get an A in if you know how to study. Got a 100%.
She makes you watch lecture videos before coming to class and you have to answer them correctly to get a decent grade. There is a quiz every time during the lab and she gives homework at different times. It was a workload because watching lecture videos prior to class just made it double the work along with other courses.
Dr. Hutson is a good professor and there was a lot of extra credit given just for going to class. Flipped classroom was kind of annoying but if you go to class and participate during iclicker questions its really easy to do well.
TAing for Dr. Hutson was a pleasure. Would highly recommend for any student interested in helping other students with Cell biology (Bio 201). She gave clear instructions of how to present in reviews and gave each of us roles to help students. An experience I will never regret doing :)
Flipped classroom was amazing. Watching the videos the first time around taking my time and not feeling rushed made understanding the material much easier and comprehendible. Then going in to the class and facilitating the learning by doing many problems allowed to solidify the understanding. Great professor and exams were easy if you spam the hws.
Dr. Hutson did not do in person lectures. The entire class was in a flipped format requiring you to watch 50 minute lecture videos before every class. Class time was used for iClicker questions. In addition to the lecture videos, we were given homework weekly to complete as well. Too much homework, not enough time.
Although I think Dr. Hutson is very bright, her flipped classroom (watch the lectures independently and then do questions in class) did not work well for me. I need to hear the lectures in class, in person for me to really learn. If 30-40 minute lecture videos are your forte, then shell be fine for you.
She deleted the exam of over 300 students and forced us to re-take it in a 24-hour period. She clearly didn't respect any of the many, many hours we put into learning and memorizing this material DURING SPRING BREAK, as the exam was the 1st day after returning. She quickly opted to force us to take it again as soon as she discovered an issue. Awful
Assigned a remote test, only to send out an email several hours later saying everyone needs to fully retake the test due to a vague "technical issue." Pre-lecture videos are way too long. If you're not a very academic person save yourself the stress and don't take her class, even though she's well-versed and interested in the content.
Her flipped classroom did not do well for me. I am from a foreign country and using the computer is too hard. Her learning is online, and she does many pop quiz that unprepared for.
The class is styled to be flipped classroom, which doesn't work for me so. She also deleted our midterm and made everyone retake it. Without an apology the day after spring break. On a day where we didn't have class, so if students didn't check their email they were screwed. Handled the situation very poorly. The class itself is easy though.
IClicker questions are so irritating and difficult. You can tell she is very intelligent but proves that very smart people often make bad teachers. The whole midterm disaster left a bad taste in my mouth. Take another professor if you want a good grade.
Completely bungled the midterm situation mentioned in other reviews. In her initial email she said you're welcome followed by a laughing emoji as if she was doing us a favor by making us take the test again. I was forced to skip a different class and retake the test as it was due the day after the original test.
due to a vague "technical error" everyone's exams were lost leading to everyone needing to retake with the next 24 hours because she didn't "feel like" waiting until the next class. Lack of apology, no acknowledgement, even ended the announcement email with a laughing emoji. Labs are set up and written poorly. Very irresponsible and unprofessional.
Although she is very passionate about the course, her passion often causes her to lose sight of what students should be able to grasp. Take the online course, her in-person lectures are pointless and an excuse to act like she's teaching.
does not teach at all. worst professor ive ever had
Horrible DO NOT TAKE! DO! NOT! TAKE! She is terrible do not listen to the good reviews, take the online version if you can.
Worst professor I have taken, she doesn't teach, spends her lectures drawing and showing random videos. Laughed at the midterm situation, and has a flipped classroom. terrible professor please save yourself and don't take her.
I think these negative reviews are a little unwarranted. There was allegedly some issue with UBLearns that forced us to retake exam 2. Could it have been handled better? Absolutely, which is why she is literally dropping exam 2 for the people that its negatively affecting grade wise. There are no pop quizzes and her lecture videos are very good.
She's received some heavy criticism over her handling of the course this semester, but I don't think she's as bad as a lot of the reviews say. The course is tough and lecture videos can be annoying, but having so many hw assignments and extra credit is super helpful with bad exam grades. She's a very kind woman and passionate about cell bio.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS with this professor. Yes, reviews seem great, but her hybrid classes are just a way for her to be lazy and not teach during class. The questions in class don't help anyone but the teacher's pets in front of the class to show off. Since the exams are randomized, you might not get the same questions from the practice tests.
Terrible professor, she never teaches in class because you have to watch lecture videos before every lecture. She just does "practice" questions in class and isn't even helpful. The exams are difficult and most of the time, nothing like the practice exams. DONT TAKE HER CLASS!!!
I can tell Dr Hutson is passionate about bio but she just doesn't give enough info. The recorded lectures and then in-class clickers just aren't enough. I feel like the questions are too difficult for the info we're given. I haven't been able to get an exam grade above a 65 even when studying her material and reading the book
Her lecture videos are often vague and the Iclicker questions are incredibly specific and difficult considering the material covered from the lecture videos. The only good thing about her and her class is that you can get extra credit from iclicker points towards the end of the semester, but most of them might as well be in a diff language.
had tech issues on remote exam, was told we should be thanking her for second chance to retake exam. points deducted for incorrect guesses on multiple select Qs, cheat sheet was allowed (didn't help), 1/2 of questions on actual exam contained material not covered in practice exam/class/hw, exam 3: 26 pts less than avg of other exam scores, no drops
Dr. Hutson is one of the best professors I've had at UB throughout my freshman year. Her class is challenging and the course concepts are difficult to grasp; however, she provides plenty of opportunities with iClicker questions to comprehend material. Tests are fair, and she offers an abundance of extra credit - finished the class at above a 100%.
it seems like she has changed for the worst. I took this professor because her rating was a 4.9, but after taking her class I don't think she even deserves a 1. She refused to give us exams online, even though all of the other professors allowed exams to be taken online remote. Don't take this class with her.
The worst prof at UB. Not once did she have a fair test, the practice exam questions were nothing like the exam, some even mentioned the wrong lecture. Never maintained a decent level of professionalism (had a TA write a rude comment and made an excuse for him, swore on her exams, laughed at us, told us it was our fault we all did bad). DON'T TAKE!
run!!! lecture heavy, unfair exams.
If you did bad in this class, it's honestly a skill issue. Stop blaming the professor when you do poorly because, in this class at least, you have no one to blame but yourself. The practice exams are nearly identical to the exams, her lecture videos are very thorough as she goes into more detail than the slides and the homework is simple enough.
This professor knows a lot about what she's talking about, but there are easier professors you can take for this class. All tests were in person, while the other professor had all tests online. They also had "homework help" that gives the student all possible questions for the homework. If I took the other professor, I would have at least a B.
Biology has been my favorite subject since I was a kid and I was this close to hating the course because of Lara but I did like the glycolysis rap video. I paid so much for the lecture textbook and did not use it for anything. The lab manual needs to be updated because it's hard to use and hasn't been updated since 2019-2020.
She runs a reverse classroom (lectures at home, practice questions at class) so only take her class if you believe you would enjoy this setup. She does a pretty good job explaining topics and a fantastic job at providing visual aid to support concepts. The class content is not easy, but there is a lot of extra credit from participation.
This was a flipped classroom which does not work for this subject. Her videos were vague and made you look up more information outside of videos. The iclicker questions were tough and questions the outside of the material. She's definitely love biology there's no doubt about it. I would take a different professor for this class.
Worst professor by far. was extremely rude when I tried to ask a question a very simple question 15 minutes before the start of class and told me she was too busy in a very nasty tone and rolled her eyes. She was texting and putting on music videos...
Hutson provided such a large pool of resources. Whether you succeed was whether you tried at all. I'm convinced those who do badly want their hand held throughout. To succeed, you had to put in the work (honestly not too much): watch the lecture video for notes, show up to class for practice questions, and take practice tests (similar to exams).
Awful, everything little thing counts for credit, You are forced to watch 40 min pre lecture videos before class and answer questions which are taken for a grade, the once in class you have to answer iclicker questions and every questions is worth points based on correctness. awful
She runs a reverse classroom so don't be too surprised by that! (Lectures at home, review/problems in class). Her lectures are long but very informative and easy to take notes on. In class, you do iclickers and if you get a decent amount right (80 or 90% probably) those points will roll over for extra credit. Content is difficult, need to study
She ate down, yall should definitely take her. She will get you just right. She used to have a worse score but she decided to get on her zoom and get that score up. And she did what she set out to do cause that score went from a 3.0 to like a 3.8. Emphasis on she ate DOWN this semester.
Absolutely awful. Often contradicts her own words, so the answers for many things are never clear. Not a good professor at all and half the time acts like we already know what she's talking about. Nothing is ever clear, and sometimes the right answers are what she "likes the most" even though multiple can be equally correct. NEVER take her class.
I switched professors. They're all better and more reasonable imo. It's absolutely crazy how every video where you're supposed to be learning is basically a quiz. It's like getting quizzed on things you've never learned. Then on top of that you need to answer questions in class. First class I dropped at UB.
SHE DOESNT CARE IF YOU DO WELL OR NOT
Does a flipped classroom, only way to absorb the material is if you spend at least 2 hours watching and rewatching the video and taking LOTS of notes. And then in class is basically useless. She is the only teacher for this class that does NOT allow cheat sheets/open notes for exam (which is setting everyone up for failure) DO NOT HAVE HER
Does a reverse lecture style of teaching. Does not give cheat sheets like other professors which is a reason behind low scores within her class when compared to others. Attending lectures doesn't add anything to what she shows in her lecture videos. Has only had one "teaching" lecture throughout the whole semester.
She runs a flipped classroom. She makes the class extremely easy to be honest and she makes 100% sense if you just listen. I do agree though, that her in person class is useless and she can be a little rude at times, but she offers extra credit and easy assignments. Shes a pretty good professor despite the hate.
Had her as a lab coordinator. Her pre-lab videos made me want to rip my hair out! It is so hard to watch them without getting angry at the way she talks (like she's in an anime) and there was no CC. She couldn't explain the procedures, so I was always confused during lab. If it were anybody else making the vids, I would've performed better.
All content was taught through videos you had to watch outside of class with questions regarding the material you were learning for the first time graded on correctness with only one attempt. She is the only professor that doesn't allow cheat sheets on exams and often came across passive-aggressive. Before this class I never had a B in my life.
It is very hard to learn anything in class if you already do not understand much from the lecture video you have to watch before class. If you ever fall behind in the class there is no recovery. If you have the option, pick a different professor.
Absolute worst professor I have ever had to take in my life. You have to watch her videos before class and her voice alone is making me go bald because of how much I rip my hair out listening to it. I am probably going to drop out of college because of her class. I just can't do it anymore. Save your precious GPA and don't take it with her, okay?
Not kind to students and views them as ignorant baby slobs who are incapable of learning anything for themselves. Unrealistically high standards. She takes things way too seriously not understanding that making the class harder in dumb ways won't help us in life. I would take another professor. She no longer likes teaching it would seem.
The worst professor I have ever had, she talks down on all of the students. On top of that, she is the only professor for Bio 201 that does not let you bring a "cheat sheet" to the test, and does a flipped classroom. The flipped classroom was the worst part. You would answer questions during the video lectures and only got one attempt. (very hard)
Save yourself the headache and take another professor.
No cheat sheets, flipped classroom, and just practice questions in class. Nothing is incredibly hard in this class. Make sure you take as many practice tests as possible and get the extra credit points. She answers student concerns/questions pretty poorly. Class isn't impossible, but the other professors make it easier to succeed.
She doesn't give cheat sheets, but honestly how does one succeed in higher level courses if they're not able to do this material. Take Hutson if you want to master cell bio. Her in-class iClickers are tough, but so helpful. Sometimes she can be intimidating, but keep at it and don't ever be afraid to ask her questions about course content.
We don't get cheat sheets but it forces you to learn more, so if you're pre-health def take it with her. However, I am intimidated by her, and emailing her is scary. Attend her office hours???, but I went to TA office hours. Besides the attitude, she's good at teaching. If most of your class is failing she'll give good extra credit.
Would recommend taking with a different professor. Thought the flipped classroom would be super helpful but is wasn't. The stuff you do in class isn't super helpful. The clickers are often trick questions. Only class section that doesn't get to use cheat sheets (the others got to). Lab was fun and easy though.
Dr. Hutson is a good professor and she does care about her students success even outside the class room. Cell bio is hard if you don't study so study. Active learning heavy.
Prepare to work hard in this class. Professor Lara doesn't give cheat sheets, but the flipped classroom and practice questions are helpful. Unstuck ai was a great study tool alongside the textbook. Attend office hours, stay on top of the material, and you can succeed.
I took this class back in spring of 2023 and I forgot to leave a rating. Honestly I passed this class due to the help of the practice tests, homework, and the TA review sessions. (idk if they still have those) The lecture videos never helped me nor did the Iclickers. I had to watch a lot of youtube videos as well. Other than that the class was meh.
Dr. Hutson does a flipped classroom, which I loved. Her lectures are well made and very interesting. I think she is super nice and among all the BIO 201 professors, she is the only one that will set you up for success.
Umm if you have phd level vocabulary as a freshman this is the teacher for you! 😃
Dr. Hutson is one of the most challenging professors I've had at UB. She overcomplicates lectures to a certain extent, however all the knowledge you are exposed to here will help you with all your future courses. I would not recommend this class to non BIO majors.
Should be fired, flipped classroom is terrible for learning.
Dr. Hutson is a great professor ! Her teaching techniques are engaging and helpful. Shes a tough grader and expect from her students to put on the work and show up ! If you need HELP please go to her office hours , which a very welcoming and you might leave with some candies. Overall, I will totally recommend Dr.Hutson an excellent professor.
She finally incorporated cheat sheets into this class and I could not imagine this class without them. She cares about what she teaches alot, very accessible. only downside is a flipped classroom with iClicker questions during class that often barley ever make sense with what the lecture video was. Exams with even a decent cheat sheet are very easy
Dr. Hutson is a great professor, she cares a ton about her students and the material being taught. She's extremely available to meet with to discuss the class and provides extensive resources to better understand the course work. Practice tests are always provided and heavily reflect the exam questions, a cheat sheet is also allowed.
Attend class every day for iclicker. Even if you miss half the questions it will roll over as bonus points. Also make your cheat sheet from the practice tests. She reuses most of the questions directly from those exams.
Honestly my favorite professor. Hutson is an amazing professor who showed me that flipped lecturing helps a lot. Class is easy as long as you do the lectures on time. Print then out and take notes as you watch and practice exams 6-8 times as well and make sure you understand the material.
I really liked Dr. Hutson. Biology in the News was a super easy class, there is only one major assignment and if you do it right you'll probably get a 100. If you miss any other work due to absence you can turn it in late and likely still get full credit. She likes it when people participate. If you want an easy and interesting seminar, take this.
