the prof is very nice, excellent lectures, nice curve for the class. Highly recommend all to take her class.
She is condescending and her lectures are so-so. If you don't have previous lab reports and tests, you might have to work your butt off because there are so many cheaters in this class. I think Soowal is overrated. She's not that easy.
i hated that class. it depends on the average. as in u can do bad because everyone else has old stuff. and i know those people don't get any of it.
Her lecture is loud and clear, and some people who took it with other professors found her notes very helpful. She is very nice and cares about people learning the material. Midterms and final are fairly easy (straight from lectures) with exception of application problem.(tricky!) You need to know the experiments very well in order to answer those.
This professor is very helpful. her lectures are clear and detailed. she explaines the material usually before you get to do the experiment which is very helpfull. the mediterms are staight forward. usually there is a trick question, not a big deal. final is sort of hard
Soowal's lectures are very clear. Writes everything on the board. Tests are rep. of the lectures. The class itself can be very fun. Start lab reports early b/c they are very time consuming. Important tip to make your life easier: after every lab section, write down what you did & why you did it. That'll make writing the report muchhhh easier.
She makes sure that students (only those interested) understand the material. But she can be very very sarcastic sometimes, to the point you almost don't wanna like her. Exams are mostly from lectures and problem sets, so textbooks are pretty much no use unless you are willing to cover every single detail. Overall great prof, but personally blah.
Soowal is a good teacher. Her lectures are interesting enough, and she post slides online and on podcast which is really nice. Her test are mostly from lecture and she curves on a 80 percent. It's a easy class to do well. Especially if you go to discussion. Overall a good teacher to have for genetics
Lectures are not very reflective of exams, which often contain many tricks and things not covered. Take another easier professor who already has experience teaching BICD 100 (i.e. Smith)
This was Professor Soowal's first time teaching genetics! I got to say she is a terrible professor that does not know how to manage a big class. Her lectures are clear but doesn't focus materials on the exams! She's lazy, the TA write the exams and its multiple choice! The tests are tricky! Not a good professor to take Genetics with at all!
Took the fall 07 genetics with Soowal and i just felt that i was so unlucky to have picked her. Her first time teaching this class and exams are definitely not representative of lecture materials. Did not know how to study for "her" exams. Not taking her for BIBC 103 and don't take her for BICD 100 if she teaches again!
Seriously the worst bio professor i've had. She made one of the easiest upper div bio classes extremely hard for no reason. impossible questions that are more like puzzles than genetics questions. not representitive of any material whatsoever.DO NOT TAKE HER FOR GENETICS. its that simple.
her lectures are straight from the book and clear but exams are far away form what she covers in lecture. it was very unforunate that i took gnetics with someone who had no experience and was not helpful at all. take somebody else who knows the material and has experience..DO NOT RECOMMEND HER AT ALL
Lectures were straight from the book. Homework probs were trash after the first midterm. Knowing how to do the problems that were posted online and given out in section are crucial for doing well on tests. Tests were mult-choice, and some questions were weird and tricky. Doable class, though.
She was the worst teacher I had in ucsd. She acts friendly but when asking questions she is not,She makes it look easy with her slides but in the test she gives you totally different questions that you have never seen or heard in the class and each one is long and confusing and if you miss one you'll miss the ones after it. 50question/80min.
dont take her. lectures are understandable, except when she goes through 3 chapters during 1 lecture and expects you to understand it. hw problems are very doable but they aren't the type of problems you get on midterms/final. the questions are poorly written and vague, go in and ask for help and shell tell you "i wanted you to think this instead"
Her tests are extremely different from the lectures and the hw. Questions are really tricky. Even if you study a lot it is hard to get the questions on her tests right. Really bad lecturer she repeats everything written on her slides but doesn't explain what she is talking about, she is not helpful in her office hours at all. DON'T TAKE HER!!!!
Going to lecture is pointless, since all slides and podcasts are posted. Tries to act like she cares, but tests are intentionally tricky. You'll think you did great in the class and end up doing pretty bad. Doesn't listen to grading concerns, and can be quite rude when simple questions are asked. Maybe interested person in life, but bad prof.
Here is an honest rating. It's true that her tests are long and somewhat tricky. But come on..this is an upper division class. Although she doesn't explain everything that she puts on her exams...what she does explain in class...she explains it crystal clear. Stuff she doesn't explain is covered in section. Class, section, Review sessionget youthe
Lecture notes are straight out of the book.Do the problems twice. Not hard, but u have to be able to do them quickly b/c you can run out of time on the tests.Memorize some of the basic ratios for crosses b/c you don't want to have to work them out every time. This was her 1st semester teaching, so she'll probably have better lectures as time goes on
I do not recommend this teacher. Her lectures are not clear and the tests are very difficult.
She really wasn't that bad. The tests weren't very representative of lectures and homework but were still manageable. She was nice to me and I never heard her refer to anyone as an "idiot". Also, I'd tap that. You heard me.
Professor Soowal's class is quite difficult, but it is generously curved. It is obvious that she tries very hard to answer all her student's questions, as she spends a lot of time on WebCT. However, she is also quite stubborn when it comes to hiding her tests, as the only way to review your exams is to visit her during crowded office hours.
She seems really nice at first, and her lectures are actually quite clear. However, once you get to the exams it's a completely different thing. The problems are NOTHING like the hw problems, the test are long, tricky, confusing, hard, and never enough time. She is hard overall!!
She is hard. She has a big curve in the class which is ok. Overall Id give her a decent score.
Dr Soowal is a great professor. Her grading is fair and she has a thorough understanding of the material.
She is an awesome professor. Her exams are very fair, everything from the material covered. She throws a couple of curve balls in her exams but nothing impossible!
Lectures are strraight forward, but the tests are total shockers. Not represntitive of the homework at all!! Heard the T.A.s make the questions. tricky. and she has a bad attitude.
OMG!!! the worst class that i have ever taken. HER LECTURES WERE POINTLESS. you know why?? BECAUSE THE FREAKIN EXAMS were so different i mean SO HARD. She tries to act nice but she has some serious tricks under her sleeves THE WOREST TEACHER I've had ever since i got to UCSD run for your life DO NOT waste your time. SHE GAVE OUT SO MANY BAD GRADES
she actually isn't that bad. her tests are hard but she does go over the material in class and the curve is pretty decent. i thought i failed the final but i ended up getting my first A+. TA office hours are really helpful. Hers, not so much.
She's a good lecturer but very strict. Her exams are long and tricky, all multiple choice questions. I agree that she tried to be nice but not a helpful professor. Do not take her if you're good at Genetics .
She is ridic. There is no curve in the class. All tests are MC, no chance for partial credit. the material is easy but her tests are tricky so even if you know your stuff you can get a C. I did! my first C in college and I'm a junior. take another prof!
Lectures are very clear. Study whatever she mentions in lectures and you'll be fine. The TA for this class could be your god! I had an awesome TA that helped me get an A+ in this class. Genetics are tricky, so learn those tricks! Read test questions carefully and you'll do well. She doesnt seem so interested in helping students at all though.
Definitely the worst prof I've had at UCSD. She contradicts herself in lecture and when questions are asked, she never seems to have a response. If you get stuck with her, the key to doing well in the class is taking advantage of your TA. The TAs for this class are phenomenal and helpful - which almost makes up for the professor soowal's failure.
She pretends to be nice and helpful in lectures but when you need help or ask her a question outside of class, she makes you fell like you are wasting her time. She won't help u out on your grade either. I showed huge improvement from Midterm 2 the Final and received 1 of the top 5 scores on the Final & She wouldn't bump grade up .5 pt from A- to A.
Soowal is a good professor. Lectures are clear and podcasted. You don't have to read the book anymore than what she has talked about in lecture. HOWEVER, her tests are ridiculously hard. Your TA could make or break this class. I had an awesome TA and it made all the difference.
I actually liked Professor Soowal. She was clear in lecture, her tests didn't require you to read the text book - just do the homework questions and attend lecture and section, and you should be fine. I had an awesome TA, too. So that helps. Overall, it was a good class. She curves all the tests so the average is 80%.
Bad Professor, take her at your own risk
She is a pretty difficult teacher. Her exams cover a LOT of material and covers everything she went over in lecture.. You must read to clarify the lectures, and there is a ton of reading that you must do. She seemed very nice in lecture, but when i went to her office hours, she was VERY mean. be prepared to study a lot if you take her
Professor Soowal is an excellent teacher who makes time outside of class for her students. I am a freshman at UCSD and was scared to take this upper division class, but she was such a good teacher that i managed to pull off an A-. i really really enjoyed my fall 08 quarter in genetics with her as my teacher.
Took this in the summer and got an A+. The curve on the final was very decent (20 points) and there was only 1 midterm. Lectures are very clear. Textbook is useless as long as you attend section. Do the practice tests and finals and review lecture notes. Office hours (both TA and prof) are very helpful (TA's basically go over hw answers).
shes pretty easy, just do the hw and the study questions. id for sure take another class from her
she teaches well. very clear during lecture. however, she is extremely rude when you ask questions. her attitude says, "don't waste my time". i wouldn't take another class from her.
dr. soowal is a really easy professor. all you have to do is skim the chapter shes going over prior to class so you have some idea of what she is talking about. do the problems she assigns before the exams, it doesn't take more than a couple of hours to do. also do the practice exams she puts up on webct. if you do those things you'll for sure get
I have her for BICD 100 and BIBC 103 this quarter. She's is a good lecturer b/c she's enthusiastic. Most of the stuff she goes over in class is pretty clear. Her genetics tests can be tricky, so read carefully. While she seems nice and caring in class, if you ever talk to her in person, she's really rude. I wouldn't take her again.
i agree with the person who commented before me. she's a clear lecturer and the material itself isn't too bad. she is just very rude. i talked to her a couple times in person, and she gave me such an unfriendly attitude. never wanted to go to her OH. I never want to take another class with her again. I do not recommend her.
I got 4th highest on final still got a B+ because I did bad on clicker questions and i didn't do the survey thing. plus, my TA gave me low grade even though I didn't miss a single TA section just because she didn't remember my name. so don't ignore those things if you want to get an A in her class.
Lectures are pretty clear, and the exams are based on what she covers. Lab is not hard, but with a good/helpful TA, it becomes pretty fun. 2 lab reports, 3 exams. Pretty fair grading, not that hard if you keep up. DON'T WAIT TO START ON THE LAB REPORTS!!!
She teaches the class in a clear way. Her tests are a little tricky, but definitely not that hard. The recommended problems weren't useful. The difficulty of her tests doesn't require too much reading or studying. Overall, she makes this one of the easiest upperdiv classes.
Dr. Soowal is clear and competent. Her lectures are easy to follow and really help you understand the material. Her tests are tricky, read the questions very carefully.
This professor lectures very well and she is good at keeping your attention. However, the book is completely USELESS for her course because reading doesn't do you any good since she tests off her lectures. Also, the suggested homework problems and her practice exams are 10000X easier than her actual exams. I think her class was completely unfair.
Professor Soowal is great! Her lectures are interesting and keep one awake :) She bases her tests primarily on concepts covered in lecture. The book is an extra help when concepts are unclear in lecture. She can get challenging but as she said you will walk out of her class knowing genetics.
Dr. Soowal is a really nice professor and is very helpful during office hours but her tests are really tricky and time consuming for 50 min tests. You run out of time and the questions are difficult and all are MC. Doing book problems and practice tests are useless. If u dnt do well under time constraints and pressure DONT TAKE THE CLASS.
When people ask her questions she is just rude. She says she doesn't want to spoon feed her students like she does her children....but how are we supposed to learn something foreign to us? She is a good lecturer, but when it comes down to the test all that goes out the window. She wants her average to be a B- but it was a C-....bad bad bad.
in this class i'm just hoping i pass. Subj is easy. Tests are impossible under time constraints & super tricky. She lectures great, you think you get it, but when it comes to the pressure of the exams, u'd be lucky to get a C- (avg). Hw's are time consuming but helpful however if you want to keep your gpa, take a different class!
Worst professor ever. Seriously. She never goes over any problems on the board, just a bunch of useless definitions that she doesn't even test you on when the exam comes along.
Questions in class will be met with teasing ridicule. She is a good lecturer but the lectures are worthless because she makes the tests a mind game full of tricks to fail you. Although the tests are multiple choice, you are constrained by time. DONT TAKE HER!
I've never heard her be rude when students ask questions. Her lectures prepare you for the test fairly well (although, the HW is very different from tests). Yes, the averages for the tests were low but she curves the class, although I think she curves to a C+ after I calculated the numbers (although she claimed it was a B-). She's nice though.
She is very cool, because she thinks the stuff she taught is the most important thing in this world. She curves but it seems like she does not apply curve to this entire class. She will not count people who drop this class at the end of 9th week to make sure the average is about C-. Final is extremeely hard, you can't finish 90 quetions 3 hours
Probably one of the worst professors at UCSD. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Tests were very tricky, hard to finish under the time constraint. Did i mention, she's rude as f***.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR like the person below me said. She said the grades are curved, but DO NOT TRUST HER. If you are expecting your grade to go a bit higher after she curves, trust me her curve is NOT going to be any of help.
I went to her office hours to ask for help and she is VERY kind--not rude at all! She has a very friendly disposition during lecture as well. As for her exams, they kinda HAVE to be tricky--genetics would be way too easy if it was just memorization & regurgitating facts. And her final is completely doable--90 MC for 3hrs = very reasonable!
Her class was so hard compared to the other professor's class during the quarter. The homework are not graded based upon completion but what you got write. Her lectures made the course sound really easy but she tests you on concepts much deeper than what she teaches.
Took her for BIBC 103 last year and I strongly advise you to stay away from her class. You think 6bl shoulda been worth more than 3 units? wait till you take Soowal's class... knowledgeable but difficult to approach and came off condescending in office hours. Final isn't representative of lectures and is way more difficult than what she goes over.
She really shouldn't be teaching. Honestly, the midterms were only fair if we had TIME to do them, absolutely not enough time for any exams. This is the second time taking this course and I did better the FIRST time (with a diff teacher of course, she's a great lecturer and yes u learn, but ur grade suffers anyway...STAY AWAY!
I took this lab class hearing bad things about Soowal, but it was just the opposite. Soowal is very clear in what she wants you to know and her tests are representative. Plus, only TWO lab reports instead of 3 for the other professors. Take this class, do the work, and it's not bad at all. Your grade depends on your TA more than the professor
easy class if you go to lecture and lab. TA's are all pretty cool. Lectures rarely lasted the full time, and labs were usually three hours at most. Two big lab reports (15-20 pages), but you have lots of time to do them. Overall an easy class with Soowal
good professor. she was really clear and her tests were pretty fair. it was representative of the hw she assigned.
WORST PROFESSOR AT UCSD. Lara is by far the rudest, hardest, and most UNAPPROACHABLE professor at UCSD. I don't know why this woman is still teaching, especially with all these horrible ratings. DOES NOT HELP DURING OFFICE HOURS. HER SUPPOSED "CURVE" DOES NOT EXIST. take GHIARA instead.
Shes a very clear lecturer but unlike many other lab professors and classes, she tends to go over material that is not in the lab manual during lecture and subsequently tests this material on her midterms. Very condescending. Assigns more work and detail for lab reports than other professors but definitely possible to get an A.
Professor Soowal is extremely clear as to what she expects from her students. During labs she is always available for students to approach her about class material or just fun discussion. Take her class is you actually want to enjoy a lab class at UCSD. Relatable and knowledgeable :)
No curve, stupid free response exams, rude and agitating-- avoid, take any other professor and you should be just fine! There are seats in her lab sections for a reason...because she is terrible!
Relative to the number of hours spent in the lab (about 4 hrs, twice a week) and the commitment required outside of class, this class should be worth 6 units. Exam questions are very specific and lab reports are long. No curve, which is disappointing. Overall, I don't recommend.
Avoid her if you can. Her exams are really difficult and to top it off she has an attitude problem. Take coleman or bozinivic instead!
Soowal must take pride in asking ridiculously specific questions (and sometimes unclear) on the midterms because she does it exceedingly well. Be careful with the lab reports, more careful with midterms, and ALWAYS, ALWAYS!!! go to lecture. But honestly? take someone else if you have to take this godforsaken lab
Soowal is absolutely terrible and has big time attitude issues towards students especially if you ask questions in class. Her tests are tough but manageable until they get graded and you get marked down for stuff that she never went over. DO NOT TAKE SOOWAL AND DO NOT TAKE BIBC 103 if you can stay away from it. I hope she gets fired soon.
She genuinely cares for her students and her tests are straight forward. Only 1 lab formal lab write up, and 1-2 pop quizzes a week on lab manual. DONT BE LATE FOR CLASS or you will miss attendance points/ quiz points. She is approachable and doesn't do research so her passion really is teaching. Don't be afraid of the bad reviews, I liked her.
Awesome and clear professor. Tests (3 total) are very straightforward if you study her lecture slides and go to class. Does clicker participation the first 5 min of class, so BE ON TIME. Easy in-class pop quizzes if you have read the lab manual. You have 2 mini-lab reports and 1 major lab report, which was a pain to do. She's really chill!
This lab is super reasonable. Minimal lab reports, manageable exams, generally not hard to do well. Definitely go to lecture. The tests aren't difficult as some people say, just study professor's lecture slides and you will do great (they're online too!). Really pretty easy for a lab and I always got done early :)
She's the kind that teaches for it's a job that feeds the kids. She doesn't teach like a scientist, reading off sldies and elaborating on really obvious things because she knows she wouldn't know more than the students. The attitude problem is because she DOESNT CARE. All she wants is just the pay and the "satisfcation" of having ppl listen to her.
She has a really bad attitude. If she tells the class not to do a reading or that there won't be a quiz: there is almost definitely a quiz. She doesn't care about teaching students and is definitely not there to help you succeed. Soowal does not have office hours and doesn't like people who ask questions in class. Avoid taking her if you can.
Worst professor I have ever taken at UCSD. Do not take her.
She actually cares about her students and has pretty good attitude if you try to ask questions. Even though she doesn't have OH, she's always in the lab! Tests/pop quizzes are tough because you have to pay attention to even some really small things on the slides/in the lab manual. Lab report is reasonable. Avoid her if you want to get easy A.
Took her fall quarter and she was okay. Her attitude needs work. I wouldn't trust the reviews on here since she keeps an eye on it. If you really want to know how she is, ask friends who have taken her before.
One of the WORST professors I've ever had at UCSD. Cannot explain questions in more than one way to help learning, impatient when answering questions, imposed a great amount of stress on students and caused many to drop because of grading policies (impossible to pass with A). Unbelievable test: memorize slides and read her mind, no learning needed
She got clicker quizes in the beginning of class in an 8 am morning class. Lab report and exam almost every week, and the grading is really tough. For her lab report, she wants analysis with data for some reason, but that's her way of doing it. Exams are pretty difficult, too. She's a tough grader too.
Although you do not really gain hands-on experience due to the online format, Professor Soowal was the reason why I (a mostly Bs student) got an A after a long time. She kindly received our feedback about lab reports/quizzes grade criteria and (as long as you ask her) gave you hints on what she expected from us in our work, which was pure theory.
she definitely does not care about students, she can cause you of anything if she wants to, very bad communication, she needs work on her attitude and the level of offensiveness she puts out, overall, very unfair and rude.
Don't ever take her, really selfish and very not understanding. your grade is based on how much she likes you!
I can't for sure rate her because she was only there for the first three weeks of class. She left because of surgery. From what I've seen, she seemed friendly and mostly understanding and chill during lectures. She seemed easy to engage with compared to other professors.
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. Definitely do not take her class. She's selfish, has attitude, not understanding, and not a really nice person in general. Wish I knew this beforehand. Going to her class twice a week was like hell. I am traumatized from that class so much that thinking about it gives me anxiety. PLEASE do not take her class.
