Besides the tonnes of work (some of which r unecessary), she still intends for u to study these thick pages of handouts that she gives u every class! Watch out 4 pop quizzes, as she expects u 2 automatically fail them due to ur heavy wk load.

She is one of the best professors in the Arch department, let alone at SCAD. Be prepared to work your butt off, but you'll survive. When you are done you will compare yourself to other sections and be proud of your suffering. As a person, shes a caring woman who will push you to limits you did know you had. Prof. Montgomery is the hardest professor I have taken so far. I spent countless hours doing work for her class. If you take her, be ready to not have a social life and not sleep. She will scare the life out of you as soon as you start the class, but in the end, you will have a good portfolio (if you put effort).

I had professor Montgomery for Studio II. I LOVE THIS WOMAN! Yes she is hard. Yes it is a lot of work. However, she is the best professor I have ever had. The most amazing instructor I have ever had. Though I only had one semester of college under my belt upon beginning DRAW 115, she pushed me to be the best I could and made sure I would not be overshadowed by the students with more knowledge and skill. Montgomery in the best professor I had so far. Her class on not hard, however time consuming. You just have to work on your portfolio every weekend and you will be fine. She is not clear with the assignments but your classmates are there for you. Make sure to take her class! You will see how your portfolio stands out from the parallel classes.

Be prepared to work! Montgomery will scare you away, but you will learn so much. I have several times to where I wanted to give up, but I saw a gap in the quality of work with the other classes. You lose some sleep, but your friends do the same, and you become really close. You may hate it at the time, but its definitely worth the time and effort.

At first I was scared,but I said I need to work hard and be patience,and it will all be worth it.At the end,nobody graded me better than her,nobody gave me better info on architecture than her and at the end nobody is open minded as her,considering good age she is at. In fairness, we we're her first prod class. The difficulty with that was that she was learning the difference between teaching drafting for architecture and production design, and didn't always know how to teach us. Best advice - be patient with her and she'll be patient with you. You also won't be a guinea pig class, so there's that.

This class changed the way I think about the world, opened my mind to so many new ideas and inspired me to make work that goes deep into my own identity. The projects all linked to one another in really unexpected ways. Learned so much about 3d design and also about myself. I'd take her again tomorrow if I could.

Lots of extra help sessions, gave us amazing opportunities like design competitions and exhibitions, gave more than 100%, direct feedback and constructive criticism. Never had a professor so supportive and compassionate. I'm not going into a 3d major but after this class I just might switch to one.

LOVED THIS CLASS. LOVED THIS WOMAN. Brought me to a level of work that I never expected I would get to. She believes completely in the power of design to make a difference in our lives and she pushed me to that level. As an advertising major I was pretty impressed by the integration of Maslow's hierarchy of needs into the final project.

She's so enthusiastic. I have her at 8 am which is not easy but she makes me look forward to her class. The project is different and interesting from all the other sections. She has us looking at all these other artists and designers too so it's research heavy but it helps me to see my work in context. She works hard for us. I will take her again.

She is a designer through and through and she teaches you to be one too, which means that you have to think like a designer, be clear in your decisions, and have solid reasons for doing what you're doing. by the end of this class, you will know what being a designer is and you will probably be as passionate as she is about all things design.

She provides great lectures with plenty of examples of the homework and gives you freedom to make your own decisions-some people are uncomfortable with that-but no one is going to make your decisions for you after school when you're working either. She's worked in the design professions so she's getting you ready for a competitive field.

This class is so much more than I thought it would be. We're learning to draw and draft like an architect but we're learning about good design in all the scales. From the city right down to a park bench she's teaching us how to recognize and analyze great design. I love going to this class even though it's double the hours. Definitely worth my time

Inspiring. She pours herself into the class and gives great feedback as long as you do your work. Available outside of class one on one and it's worth your time to go see her during her office hours. Brings lots of books and examples to help you. I want to take her for every class I can. She cares.

Laraine is honestly the best professor out there. She's caring for all her students, but gives A LOT of work. Sometimes the work won't even go towards anything, but in the end she made me so much more knowledgeable on design. Definitely be prepared to drop a lot of money for this class. She is a great teacher/person, and am hoping to have her again

Best teacher I have EVER had. She shares her excitement about good design every day and I love how she gets me excited about it too. Knows a lot. If you care about art and design then she's the one to take.

She is an incredibly kind and emotional person, and she is very understanding. Loves conceptual art. If your major doesn't have to do with 3D design, the class will be stressful on you, and there are probably easier profs if you don't think you need this. She is sometimes scatterbrained, which worried me, but in the end I got an A in her class.

She is so creative and gets super excited for projects. It's so fun to be in her class because she is passionate about the subject and will do everything she can to help you feel the same way. She is also very kind, we had to do a project I was nervous about and she helped accommodate me so I could get where I needed with it.

I learned so much. About designing and creating and conceptualizing. But also about empathy. And thinking about others when you're designing, not just myself. She's inspiring and makes you think hard. You do a lot of maquette and research and drafts. I'd take her again in a second. We didn't do just representational work, we did ideas.

The professor was the best part of the course. Montgomery is a highly skilled teacher who cares deeply for her students as well as her work. She fostered a highly professional learning environment while carefully paying attention to the development and progress of each student.

I am taking her now. It's hard since I am an animation major. But her support for my ideas and how I go forward from one project to the next is pretty amazing. All I can say is, if you wanna learn how to be an actual artist who works with actual ideas and concepts, this is the one. I really love this class.

I just got home from a trip to NYC after spring quarter. The whole time I was there, I was seeing stuff she talked about and showed us in class. It was freaking me out at first. Now I can get what she was giving us: the zeitgeist, the things that are getting built or designed or crafted that are influencing us whether we realize it or not. Awesome!

I LOVED THIS WOMAN. Phenomenal professor that actually cares about you as a human being. I feel like I learned so much from her classes, even if projects were sometimes a little challenging, but I grew as an artist from it. She is so sweet; just follow directions and you are golden. Im finishing this class as a rising senior in high school so this is a first look at what college classes are like. Shes giving us a good outlook on what its like. Research, process, studies, thumbnails, planning. Thats why Im here. I got so much help and advice on my projects so I have advanced drawings in my portfolio. Shes tough but great.

She will make you do research and a process book, it really sets you up for major classes. My biggest regret is not having taken her earlier. Please take her, it will make you a better artist.

Okay so my friends who are taking other 2d design classes are kind of jealous. Lpapa takes us down a different path that's much more demanding and challenging and she makes us come up with reasons for everything we do in our designs. She also gives great tips for how to succeed! I'm taking her for my next design class bc I like her structure.

She's inspirational a strong and wise woman who always makes class seriously interesting. She makes us go deeper and deeper into our subjects instead of skipping around making crap that means nothing. Insists on us thinking about our decisions and not our grades. I've signed up to take her next class but I'm on a waitlist. She's worth waiting for.

My favorite class. I am going to miss this professor. We have discussed so many things about being and thinking like a designer- our values, our message to the world, our ability to make the world a better more decent and kinder place. Tough but fair. Makes you work for it. Grades come back with fairness and inside of a week. Shes teaching as if we're about to get an internship. Sounds good to me, I want an internship, why wouldn't I? Makes you document EVERYTHING. I feel like I could go into a design firm and speak like I know what I'm talking about. We had productive work sessions in class where she gave lots of individual attention and help, sharing her own tools and materials with clear demonstrations. She showed her love for architecture and design drawing by the assignments she gave us that now occupy the top position in my portfolio. Ive learned so much I dont even know how to thank her.

LaRaine Papa Montgomery is a name I will absolutely never forget. She is extremely well-versed in the design field, and a huge proponent for modern art and architecture. I was very nervous about doing 3D design, but she is so good at helping you get over your hurtles. SHOW UP TO EVERY CLASS-- she will give extra credit for perfect attendance.

Today was the last day of the most amazing class with the most awesome human being ever, and Im a little heartsick that I wont have her again. Shes the kind of teacher that you know youll only have once in your life. Shes imprinted on my mind and in my way of thinking about what Im capable of doing with my life. Design never ends. Im not a 3-d major. But the things i learned in this class went way beyond 3-d. She taught us how to think like a designer by using the design process, something i never knew about before. I'm a dramatic writing major and find myself using this process in my own work. She is an inspirational and wise person and I think I'm going to owe her a lot.

If you're excited for the Sculpey character design projects that most 3D design classes do, this class isn't for you. She seems like a good teacher, but I dropped the class because it just wasn't for me. She's very concept-oriented and philosophical, and the projects are very fine artsy and minimalist.

Her enthusiasm is contagious. You can feel the energy level go from 0 to 100 when she starts class. Knows what she's talking about and has a lot of experience and tips to share if you're open to it. She's tough love and I respond well to that style bc I know it means she wants me to succeed- doesn't coddle- take her if you can.

I appreciate how she makes me think about design as a discipline. Going in, I dreaded taking 3D design bc I'm a film major. It's the way I'm thinking about things that's been new. The design process is a kind of a mental road map so I get how I can approach film production or a screenplay. It's making me feel a lot more confident in my decisions.

I'm a first year student with not much expereince in design. Monty is incredibly patient and positive with me and gives me confidence. She knows so much that she makes me look forward to coming to class. Sometimes, after class, my head feels so full of ideas and things we discuss in class that I have to go home and take a nap jsut to settle down.

In my first quarter at SCAD, I got really lucky. I got this lady. A lot of work but she helps you to manage time and work and you get more confident with each day. I'm actually sorry that today was the last day.

Please take this class. She gave me so many perspectives on the type of art that I was bringing to the class. She wants you to put your personal touch to everything, and if you do so she'll love it. The lowest grade I got was just from posting a discussion reply too late. I got an A on all of my projects and I've never had a prof care more.

This is one of most engaging and supportive professors, especially online. As someone who was terrified of 3D design, she pushed me beyond my limits and supported me every step of the way. She was available DAILY through multiple platforms. She sent out daily announcements to clear misconceptions up and gave us feedback on projects very quickly.

Professor Montgomery is accessible for weekend extra help, she is there for you every day for office hours, she will go above and beyond to help you with anything, she gives really good feedback, and she is truly interested in you succeeding. All you have to do is meet her halfway. She's also passionate about design which gets me invested too.

Seems intimidating but as long as you work your hardest you'll be alright. Very knowledgeable and gives detailed critiques. However I've never seen someone both so specific about what she wants and yet so vague about dates and day by day expectations at the same time. Sometimes seemed not patient enough to teach 1st q freshies but she does care!!

Montgomery is one of the most intense professors I've ever had but also the most caring. I'm a transfer student and I came in not knowing what to expect and was initially stressed by the amount of work. However I realized that by touching base with her often both in and out of class helped so much. High expectations but also high reward.

She was a wonderful prof, just beware she graded on a total of six things three major design projects and three tests. Even with the few things graded she was a wonderful professor who does well with communication. The only issue I had was some with accommodations so make sure you make it clear what they are prior to even starting her class!

I loved her classes. She is a bit tough but you just need to go to the extra help sessions and you'll get an A. We had just 3 projects and 3 quizzes, the projects focused a bit on the process, and the quizzes were about the lecture slides which she uploads. She is great, I learned a lot from her.

I had Prof. Montgomery last year, I just wanted to say that of all my foundation classes, hers prepared me the most for my major classes this year- I managed to not only finish my ARCH design projects on time, but I also developed research and presentation skills that earned top grades. People complaining about her workload better need to wake up.

One of my favorite teachers at SCAD so far! Now, fair warning, Prof. Montgomery will really push you. If you get an A in her class you know you really earned it. Her lectures are great. I found that some of the organizational principles she teaches in developing your work were the most helpful. I use that for other classes now. Overall, GREAT!

The pacing of the class was helpful and the weekly checkpoints helped me stay on track. I went to a few office hours which improved my research and writing, she has a good eye for edits. Even though it's a lot of work, the class pushed me in ways that made me a better designer.

This class was about so much more than 3d design. We had discussions about the role of design in sustainability, the importance of human-centered design, how design offers solutions to real problems. We were taught about the design industries in critiques. My outlook on design was impacted by this course. Yeah, lots of work, lots of learning too.

She is the best design teacher I have ever met. She makes complex design theory clear and easy to understand. She gives very detailed feedback and encouragement to everyone and is never rude to any of her students. If you are willing to learn and want to start your own design career, definitely choose her class. She is worth everything!

Apreciate this one while you have her. There just aren't that many professors like her out there. I'm better prepared for my major because of the rigor and expectations she brings.

She really pushes you out of your comfort zone and is particular about a lot of things. But she cares a lot and is very encouraging during the actual critique. Had her for Winter '23. She was an overall great professor. She really prepares you for real-world presentations and professionalism. If you follow her instructions (which are very clear) you'll get an A. Also PLEASE follow her feedback because she lets you know exactly what she wants to see from you. Professor Montgomery is truly amazing. At first she was very intimidating but she truly just wants the best of all her students. She speaks what she thinks so be prepared for changing your project from the original idea, she gives a lot of helpful ideas and its best to follow them. She loves power points, lots of slides of info but you learn a lot.

Professor Montgomery Pushed us incorporate research into the deign process which is important, however Professor Montgomery can be very lengthy while lecturing while this is a studio class. She requires a-lot of homework outside of class that can sometime interrupt and halt the physical design process. She's a nice lady and very passionate!

Our projects were based on climate change and how dseigners help people visualize the effects on a local place. The first one we had to transform data into physical form. It was strangely difficult. While it's easy to get frustrated in the class, especially in the earlier weeks while you're still getting the hang of things, Professor Montgomery really knows what she's talking about. Professor Montgomery is AMAZING. She actually cares about her students and will not give you a bad grade unless you're absolutely the worst. The first week is the hardest to get used to the workload in the PowerPoints; after that, she's super chill and gives so much studio time. She emphasizes teaching us real world professional practices.

Though there is a ton of work, it's purposeful and I could see my work get better in each project. She puts a lot of effort to prepare us for the real world, her emphasis on best practices and good habits has helped me understand what's expected of me. We had a good time in the collaborative project.

After having more professors after her I can really say she was amazing, in the moment it might seem like a lot but it really isnt compared to other professors for fundamental studies. She is witty, cute and really cares about her teachings, helps build your work ethic. however leaned towards architect rather than your specific field.

A serious class with a serious load of work to do. More than double the workload of any other class I've taken at SCAD. She looks for commitment from her students and if somebody's noncommittal, she knows it right away. Out of this one class I've got a 160-page slide deck that documents the entire design process from reseach to thesis conclusion.

I now carry skills of perseverance and principles ingrained into my mind that changed the way I approach design in a great way. Prepare to end the course inspired.

Tough class and heavy workolad. You gotta keep on track or you'll get lost along the way. Interesting projects that build concept develpment and tons of research that I wasn't expecting. She's easily availabel to help but you have to take the first step. I had to warm up to her style but I respect her passion and her experence in design practice.

One of the best things my professor did was to encourage us to relate every project to our own majors. It made our work more interesting and we all got to see what our classmates could do pretty detailed assignments-very experimental and process driven. She also gave lots of extra help sessions and gave really good feedback just when I needed it.
