good sense of humor had fun learned a lot and he made it easy on us.
Excellent professor, very knowledgeable about the subject matter. The course texts, which are written by him, are very clear and comprhensive. Always helpful if you require assistance, but isn't always respectful towards some students.
He looks like an in-his-prime Kenny Rogers without the sideburns. Larry is a terrific professor. Very nice in person and capable/willing to answer any questions on the course material. Funny guy too, really enjoyed both courses.
While Larry is funny and a nice guy, he seems to relish in making tests harder and more confusing than necessary. The class notes are baffling at best and the course is structured to impede your progression. This is a weeder course. Sadly, all Commerce st
I always thought the A in L.A.W. stood for something else... at least that's what he told us
When I took it with Larry in 1996, he was cool but tough prof. And yes, he's a good prof.
He was a horrible prof who only taught you how to use the calculator properly. He didn't spend the time to have students understand the theory behind the numbers being plugged into the calculator.
Beware...his blacklist is bigger than his beer gut, and it doesn't take much to get****listed by him...don't ever question his "authority". He The fat jokes he cracked about himself were pretty funny though, I'll give him that.
Well, I know they made the course easier this semester, but I thought Larry did a great job. He is funny and makes the material interesting, and provided you are prepared, the tests aren't that bad.
Larry is a great prof. He seems to know virtually everything about finance. The course itself wasn't too bad. Three term exams, no "final". Simple math in the exams.
Larry A.Wood is a heartless man. He makes you feel stupid when you ask questions. He is very unapproachable and his tests are ridiculously unfair. Further, no one i know got through all the questions on the final b/c almost all questions were trick questions. If you can avoid taking this course with him do so!
Larry is not as bad as everyone thinks. He does expect you to keep up with the material, but if you go to class and do all the practice questions, this class is really no problem, it's just a matter or doing the work. The final is brutal though, you need to study twice as much as the midterm. But don't be scared by Larry, he really is a great prof!
Larry is a really good prof and he made the class interesting. However you deffinetly do need to keep up in class and do all the assigned work. THe final is super hard!
I thought that Larry was a good teacher, and that he really knew his stuff. But....I thought the class itself was impossible! The final would have taken me 7 hours to finish, so basically it was ridiculous and scary. But Id reccommend Larry since he wrote the books (which you use like crazy)and because he looks like George Lucas (which is a bonus!)
Larry is both approachable and condescending. Don't bother going to him for questions/help - he will not give you a clear answer and will make you feel like an idiot for going to him in the first place.
He was the worst professor ever
Tough class, but his book and lecture notes are very well written. I didn't buy the textbook or go to Tutorial and managed an A-.
I took his class a few years ago. I wasn't a finance major but in retrospect it was prob the most useful business class I took in my degree. At least he hated us all equally. And he bought beer.
I honestly don't understand how people can say he's unfair. All the information you need to know is right there, open book exams. Yeah the course material isn't easy, but he teaches it in a manner that makes sense. He's awesome.
The LAW made me lawl. Great prof, heavy course.
When he compares puts and calls to the wingspan of an airplane and asks if the bird will fly, the right answer is no since the fuselage is too big. Best joke ever made by a prof about himself in class!!
The class is not easy and you need to work at it. Larry is a decent prof but not the best. If you are someone who typically struggles with ACCT/FNCE classes he does not present the material in the best way. I found the TA, Ursula, to be my saving grace in this class, she explained things in a way that I understood.
Very clear prof and the course got much more interesting after the first midterm. He likes to reward students for doing well and tells hilarious jokes. Ursula was really cool and her teaching style was excellent.
the content wasn't that hard, it's just a lot of work and you have to come to class and stay on top of everything.
Great Prof! Great sense of humour, and knows how to teach a subject that some may find difficult. Very helpful, and would recommend him to anyone!
Funny, interesting, knows his stuff. Difficult class but no surprises on the exams.
Not a really hard class, but a demanding one. Keep up on your homework! Larry tells you pretty much the exact questions that will be on the test. Midterm and final questions came directly from the practice midterm and final from the course notes. Plus he is hilarious!
Hilarious guy. Writes the workbook and what not. Incredibly knowledable and has won several teaching awards. Really tries to make the lectures interesting. One of the best profs in Haskayne. But the course content...is hell. It used to be two courses, now it's 1. Be prepared to lose your social life if you want a B+ or higher in this course.
Professor Wood is one of the best profs I have had in university. He makes the dry material interesting, challenges students in interesting ways, and has fair grade scales and exams. The material is extremely difficult to some and very easy to others. Highly math based.
Take this class with Wood. He knows his stuff and will help you when you need it. Make sure you do all the work given, and you will be fine.
Take this class with Wood. He knows his stuff and will help you when you need it. Make sure you do all the work, and you will be fine.
Larry Wood is hands down the best prof I've ever had
Easy class if you do the practice questions. Class attendance not really mandatory as long as you read the course notes.
This is not really an academic course. The instructor sells his book to you and you will have to buy it!! The books are absolutely useless as well as the course. Easy course to pass though! You may take your tax return and some other documents to a bank so they can do a financial plan for you prior taking this course. This will be your final ass)
Great prof and not boring. The midterm and final are exact layout as his practice exams so do the questions and you will do good. Open book exams FTW.
Best prof at Haskayne. Never a dull class. Final was the most brutal.
You can't graduate from Haskayne without having the Larry Wood experience. Honestly, this guy is an incredible prof. That being said though, the course really is one of the most difficult in Haskayne. Even people who excel in it will admit that it is quite a challenge. Don't waste your money on the textbook, his notes are more than clear enough.
Larry is "like totally, for sure" a great prof. This course is definitely a challenge but he explains things very well. Don't buy the textbook, all the info you need is in the course notes. Do as much of the TVM beforehand as you can. Tutorials with Ursula were extremely helpful.
Take this course with Larry if you can. He's a great prof, but the material is definitely tough. Make sure that you start the TVM at least two weeks before class or you'll be behind and it's tough to catch up. Attend the tutorials- they're excellent.
Most entertaining prof I have ever had. Absolutely hilarious, and he knows his stuff. Easy to get an A, just do the work in the course notes and don't buy the textbook!
Larry's a nice guy. However, he does not teach, he just talks. Go to tutorials, TA is much more helpful. Larry is a good prof if you're taking him the second time around
This course is often regarded as the most difficult 317 but it doesn't have to be. Yes it does require quite a bit of work but if you put in the time and make sure you understand the material you're golden. Larry is also very helpful and I highly recommend asking him questions after lecture.
Oh Larry, you so funny! This man has the ability to make a very boring course quite interesting with his humor. He taught the course so well that I surprisingly still remember many concepts that I learnt a year ago. If you dread taking FNCE, take it with him and you'll be fine. Oh and it's not an easy class, YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE TO PUT SOME EFFORT IN
Larry's textbook is very well written. It lays things out in clear steps. However, I leave the class feeling disrespected and stupid EVERYday. His tone of voice is nothing but disrespectful and he ridicules every question. I'm not easily hurt, but Larry successfully makes me feel like a failure every class. He should be banned from the classroom.
FNCE 343 not a difficult class if you put in the effort to study. However, I have never felt more disrespected in my life. He entertains rude questions, (sensitive topics such as suicide. I felt stupid almost every class that I attended. I have never met such a rude teacher. He talks but does not explain. It was a challenge to will myself to class.
Ok prof. His exams are all open book, but you do need to do plenty of practice questions to prepare yourself. Time management during the exams is important. He gives hints on which questions are likely to appear, so attend the lectures. Some topics were rushed and not well explained though. This course is a lot of work just for an average grade.
He is an okay prof. He likes to call out on you in class and puts you on the spot. If you don't like that, go with Peggy. The course isn't "hard", you just need to put the time in to study and practice. If anything though, I passed the course because of Ursula. Go to the tutorials. She taught me the course. Not Larry. She's great!
Very entertaining guy, considering the dry material. The tutorials with Ursula are very valuable as she goes through lots of practice questions. Do the TVM ASAP, get all of the extra practice tests from the Business library, and do as many practice questions as possible! The text book is useless, don't buy it.
Do the TVM asap and get the extra practice final from the library for the quizess , midterm and the final : they really help.DUN ever miss the tutorials with ursula , she is awesome and helps you with a lot of questions from the TVM and the lecture notes. Starting FALL 2013 , the tvm will no longer be used so Its gonna get harder but best of luck.
Was registered in Peggy's class originally but after I went to Larry's section I realized that he was MUCH more clear than Peggy. This course requires a lot of work and you need to keep up with it but overall Larry explains stuff well and yeah he picks on you but so what? Know your stuff and he'll recognize that.
LAW is SOLID! He's very understanding and helpful. TVM is pretty much self learning. Do it 1-2 weeks in advance and then once you've done it once, go over it again and it should only take 2-3 days to review. Midterm and Final are very similar to the practice ones in the Lecture Notes. Textbook is useless. Got a 100% on TVM Quiz and A- overall.
The new course is still so hard and the midterm was the worst thing i have ever written, very similar to the practise midterm though. He speeds through the lectures so you have to teach yourself alot
Great prof in class. But the midterm was terrible. It was so long and difficult. Even though it's open book, it is unfortunately not curved which I fear the worse because 3 hour exam? I think only 3 people left before the time was up. This is not an easy course. Even taking out the TVM it was NOT AN EASY COURSE.
Midterm is the most brutal exam I have ever written. And I was prepared fully and did very well on all the practice problems. Which makes me think the exam wasnt very fair. As a teacher though, he's easy to understand and interesting/funny.
Yes his exams are brutal, but his notes are amazing and he is a very good prof. Dont take this class with anyone else.
Larry's lectures are great and entertaining. Read the textbook before class because he certainly won't be teaching you in class. Midterm was hands down the worst exam I've ever written. Get the textbook, it explains the concepts and the practice questions are good too. Good luck, you'll need it!
Larry Wood thinks he's being funny in class, but half the time he's just being plain ignorant. He doesn't teach you anything in lectures. You're better off just reading the textbook. His exams are absolutely brutal! I was very well prepared and felt very confident going into it, yet I still failed. I knew it was going to be bad, but seriously.
Assighments are easy, they are exactly the same as the sample ones. Read the chapters before class to keep up with his slides(he runs through them) and you shouldn't be that lost. If you don't attend class much or keep up with the material, then make sure you give yourself atleast a week to study before the midterm. The midterm is very difficult.
One of the best Finance professors at U of C. He is entertaining and keeps students engaged in class. He is both helpful and energetic in class. There is a lot of material packed into this course so make sure you put in the effort. If you work hard, you can succeed, despite what some people say. Great prof!
Larry is plan out mean and disrespectful, calls people out in class and is so ignorant. He obviously knows a lot about finance but does it at such a pace it's hard to retain anything. 3 exams and multiple assignments all in one small spring course is way to much. Exams are hell, people barely pass the course. I'm glad I passed but stay away!
Larry is the best finance professor at Uof C. He is so helpful and calls out his favorite students in class. He made me feel special. Do all the practice questions and you will be fine. Someone in my class had 100% in the course. It is not the worst course in the business school.
FNCE 317 is not as difficult as everyone makes it out to be. Its all multiple choice and if you are allowed to bring in notes and write down whatever you want (HINT. Write down how to do all the questions in the practice final and midterm in your book and you will be golden since the practice midterm and final are almost identical to the real thing
Larry is incredibly supportive when it comes to hard work. If he sees you participating in class and trying (you actually can easily become a favourite). He's a really good prof and one of my favourites that have taken. Work hard, don't slack off and you will do fine in his class.
easiest 317 in life, have to be an idiot not to get atleast an A. Everyone hating is probably going to end up in Arts anyways
Larry is a great prof. He can rush through the material at times. but do not hesitate to ask a question. He is very helpful and made sure everyone understand the material. You must do the assignments and work required to pass the class. The tests are fair. Plus, you get to bring your notes. Avoid procrastination and enjoy the class
This class was breeze, if you can take someone with a bad sense of humor then Larry is a great prof. Test are easy and almost identical to practice exams and marks are posted almost instantaneously. I would say it is almost impossible to fail his class and he is willing to help you with everything if you show you've tried by yourself.
Touch class, but awesome dude.
Decent prof, makes class interesting with his jokes but doesn't explain material very thoroughly. First exam class average was around 60%, must put in a lot of work for the A.
Larry is a great prof, even though his class was 3 hours long it always flew by because he's always joking and making everyone laugh, which makes the class even that much more enjoyable. Do his workbook practice questions and you will get a good grade. Finance 343 with Larry is one of the best, most fun classes I've taken.
Best class i have taken in all of haskayne. It is no longer MGST 577 it is now a personal finance course within the finance designation. I would not feel as if i am prepared for the real world through my degree without this class. Its an absolute joke that personal finance cannot count towards your finance degree. Love larry for keeping it alive.
Tough prof. Picks on students even if their paying attention. Very intimidating.
This course is extremely easy you do not need to learn anything to do well in it. Definitely don't need to EVER go to class. Completely useless. don't even bother learning the material, because the final exam is practically the same as the practice he gives.
The king himself. If you are able to land him in spring go make a charitable donation somewhere because you just hit the lottery. The practice quizzes and exams are the exact same as the real ones just with different numbers. I would say non business kids could take this as an option. Organize your schedule in advance to take fin317 in the spring.
Hard but if you have to take it, take it with Larry! He can be intimidating but really cares about the success of his students. Although it's not required I would recommend going to his lectures because he makes the material more understandable! Hint: make sure you do his practice quizzes and exams because they are VERY similar to the real thing
Larry is so hilarious, and all the materials were so helpful. In class activities taught me a lot in the real life. Mock exam helped a lot! Would definitely take other courses with him!!
Course was redone and now it is super easy. There is no midterm, the online quizzes are straight from the slide decks, the in class activities are mostly games and participation marks, and the final is extremely similar to the mock final with the added bonus that you're allowed to bring in a cheat sheet. Group cases are tougher, but still easy.
Larry does a good job at explaining the material that at times can get confusing. He's fairly funny too. He forces engagement onto people who come to class and posts weekly quizzes on D2L, for those reasons most people stop showing up, except for the graded in-class activities. Group work is boring. Final test is half of the mark, but is fair
Finance is a difficult course, but Larry makes it all better. He is one of the best professors I have had in my 4 years of university. He cares about each student and makes an effort to know everyone's names. Attendance is not mandatory but I went to every single lecture because of how fun his classes are. Not to mention he is absolutely hilarious.
Larry's just a super solid guy. His expectations are fair given the content of the course; if you prepare how he tells you an A- or above is easily achievable. You need to put in work to see the results though - this course is not to be taken lightly! Larry genuinely cares about his students and is a quality character through and through.
I heard good things about Larry, but I can't really see it. He just reads the slides + the quizzes are hard b/c you do them BEFORE he teaches the material. For the life of me, I cannot understand why it is set up this way. Averages on quizzes usually a C. No one attends Thursday lectures because we already taught ourselves the material for the quiz
As someone who knew nothing about personal finances prior to this class, Larry's class definitely did teach me a lot. He wrote the textbook himself, which provides students with problems and examples.. which he always recommends doing as the examples are on the exams. He also tries to incorporate humour, and he seems to truly care about students.
I heard good things about Larry, sadly he didn't live up to it. He was funny at times, but generally he just read straight off the slides. The quiz layout means no one shows up to Thursday classes. Beware the group case, bad members can bring your mark down substantially. Final was easy, being basically identical to the practice one. Beware quizes
Larry is a great instructor. Had a very good knowledge of the material and pulled no punches or tricks as to what was expected of you to succeed in the course. He also does care about the students and will offer any help he can give to help you succeed in the course. He wrote the textbooks himself and everything you need is right in there
Larry was funny but he usually read straight off the slides, and because we had to do quizzes on lectures before they were taught most people didn't show up to those lectures as they had already taught themselves everything. Final is 48% but very similar to practice, with wording of questions changed slightly and numbers changed.
First off hes funny so if you come to lectures you'll be thoroughly entertained. Larry copies his quizzes almost verbatim to the practice quizzes he posts, and his midterm and final are very similar to the actual thing. BUT DO NOT BE RELIANT on this because he sometimes the question looks the same, but hes asking something different. Decent Prof.
Very funny guys always keeps the class super engaged. Don't agree with how the course was taught but overall Larry did an amazing job.
Larry Wood was an excellent professor, his exams are based exclusively on practice exams and lecture content. There is a lot of content to go through, as there is in any finance class, but he makes everything easier on students. I plan to take more classes with him in the future.
Really good prof for MGST 451. In class activities are easy and fun. His weekly quizzes can be poorly worded and he only reads word for word off his slides so you end up teaching yourself the course. He is funny and makes classes interesting
FNCE 477 was definitely the worst class I've taken so far. Larry has very high expectations and provides NO guidance for the ridiculous amount of material which is covered. He expected all of us to be professional financial planners, so he overloads you with ridiculously specific information which is probably more applicable to other classes
Larry is very rude to students. MGST is a boring class however, the way he structured it makes it more doable. There are 2 group cases - it was unfair this semester because we never got feedback from our first case as there was a delay in the TA marking, so we were sent off to do the 2nd case without knowing how we could possibly improve.
His lectures are pretty okay. He can sometimes be funny but is very strict on his rules (0 compensation). Also, can skip the second lecture of the week because its the same thing as the quiz of the week. In class activities are basically a show up and get an A+. Really easy class and final is the same as sample final.
Personal finance is a great topic and important to learn but taking it with Larry did not help. He made it stressful and harder than it should be. The final was hard. Hes also not the most respectful or kind professor to talk to one on one. Rambles way too much about pointless topics in class...
Larry is super rude and picks on people in class, which can be fun but he definitely takes it too far sometimes. He's a decent prof, not the best but not the worst. The course is pretty easy, especially the final. Don't be intimidated that its worth so much.
Weekly assignments are a pain that take forever but they're only worth a little. Larry is a decent prof that as long as you try, you can get a good grade. For the lectures he reads off the slides (word for word) but we also does fun activities so thats cool. Final exam was easy if you took full advantage of the cheat sheet.
if you enjoy him yelling out "what could you possibly not understand" when you put up your hand to ask a question during an in class activity, then I guess take this class with him. be prepared to be called out A LOT
Larry goes over the content very clearly and in depth, so attending lectures is key (he also gives out very similar exam questions at the end of each lecture). The textbook is not mandatory but good for practice questions, and the practice quiz/exams that Larry provides are VERY similar to the actual thing! He is a spicy man.
Larry is hard to evaluate. If you're shy and don't like being called out in class, avoid! He makes jokes that can be deemed insensitive but he really knows his stuff. There's no midterm (just quizzes every week) so there's alot of material to study for the final. Also beware of the case quizzes and just write everything you can on the cheat sheet.
The hard parts of this course were the two Case Quizzes, which required you to study extensively and have in-depth knowledge of texts seemingly unrelatted to the class. Make sure you study hard for those. Overally, Larry is a hilarious professor and the In-Class Activities are essentailly free marks. Make sure to study from his Sample Final Exam!
This guy truly is the L.A.W. of Personal Finance. I thoroughly enjoyed this course, and it was probably the most useful course that I have ever taken. This course teaches you valuable ways to increase your personal wealth, and the strategies these methods entail. His Sample Exams are exactly the same as the Final Exam, he just changes the numbers.
Very lazy prof. Very redundant class. I feel as though they had to give Larry a course and let him do what he wants before he heads out to pasture. When Larry teaches you must take the content theoretically as the man has zero real life experience in the financial field. He is institutionalized and will have no practical advice on the real world.
Case quizzes are the drag on your grade in this class so study hard for them. Sample final is a good representative of the final, but definitely not a 100% copy. Lectures he reads right off the slides so if you miss a class don't worry too much, but you will end up having to attend basically every lecture for group work/individual assignments
Larry doesn't seem to enjoy teaching. He is rude to students and reads directly from per-prepared slides. Often in class he misreads his slides making what he says the opposite of what he means. For students with visual impairments his class will be difficult. What he says and what he writes do not always align. His emails responses are one word.
You aren't allowed to review tests with Larry so if you think you understood the material and get a bad grade there is no chance to improve. His exams are full of grammar and spelling mistakes which makes it hard to understand what he is asking. You can't revisit questions on an exam to check it over. Doesn't answer in class questions well.
Larry is rude and condescending to students: when asked questions he is dismissive and quick to blame the student. Don't bother showing up to class unless there is an in-class activity, he reads directly off the slides and is confusing. Weekly quizzes are easy, but the cases are difficult. Final is worth 50% which is insane!
I really enjoyed taking this course. One of the best from my MBA and undergrad programs so far. Advice/lectures were relevant to my life situation. I was very interested in the content, but I did find it difficult to maintain an A. Definitely study the practice exam that is posted for the final.
Larry is hilarious and a veteran who really knows his stuff. Case quizzes were tough and the final was a tough read but overall he prepares you well.
Larry was hilarious and made online lectures bearable! Given the online format, there were a of of deliverables and group activities. Everyone gets the same MC quizzes, midterm, and final.
Dr. Wood is an absolute legend. Any issues you would have with this class would come solely from being dissatisfied with course content, not with the professor or the way it is taught. Dr. Wood will call you out for questions etc. to keep you engaged (if your video is on). This class is what you make of it. If you study/test well, you will be ok.
Provided minimal help along with the TA. Little to no practice for exams
Unless CFP is your pursuit, this class will not make sense to take at all. For the amount of work that is required, and the breadth of niche and hardly retainable knowledge they expect from you is a bit mindboggling. Calm down and be more inviting to students that have more important classes and only take this class to aid in their personal gains.
