His class is slightly difficult, but he is VERY interesting. I never fell asleep in class, and didn't miss a single class.

Hilarious! Very entertaining stories, but make sure you don't get distracted by the ever-growing unibrow hehe. Seriously, take his classes (even if they are slightly difficult). You will learn more in them than any other class.

He is an intresting teacher and you do learn a lot in his class, but it is hard to reflect what you learn on your tests. His grading system is messed up. You can make all B's and one C on the final and end up with a C in the class. I am still fired up about that grade. I deserved an A.

The teacher is very nice and sweet. However, unless you read ALL the chapters and EVERY word of the book is basically memorized you will NOT do well on the tests! Also not very understanding if you have an emergency and its a really one :)

Yet again Dr. Bates rocks a class. He is very clear on everything. The only way to fail this class is to not show up and not read your text. If you do both of these, you'll do pretty good.

he is a great story teller... and lets u know everything on the test, u have to take notes like crazy and read each chapter all the way through. and then u can still fail his test because they are just plain hard. but he scales them so thats why i am passing.

I am now in graduat school, but I took every class I could with Dr. Bates. He is the one who turned me on to psychology and encouraged me to go to grad school. I still keep in touch with him even though I have graduated UNA. Quite easily, the BEST teacher I ever had!

He has no attendance policy but GO to his class. It will benefit you in the long wrong. TESTS ARE FROM MATERIAL IN THE BOOK! His powerpoints are useless for his test

Great Teacher

I had him for physio, I greatly appreciate that he is so knowledgeable at this study, but his class is not an easy A. You have to study and read your text or you WILL fail this class. He is so interesting and that makes class fun. Although I did not get the grade that I wanted, I would take him again and I have.

Great class!! Dr. Bates is very interesting and very very funny. I worked really hard and earned only a B. He is very fair. When he says you need to read the book, he means read it more than once. The tests are heavily swayed toward the book. I would recommend this class to anyone. You will learn so much and have a great time listening to him.

Dr.Bates is the BEST teacher in the world and I recomend him for every class you can take. His tests come from his lectures and the book, but he tells you that. He has SOOO much knowledge and can teach you so much. Attend class and pay attention. I took every class I could.

Im in his class now & I absolutely love the class! He is a very interesting & fun teacher and makes psychology fun. He gives online quizzes for each chapter & they are 20 questions long, 25 min to take it! The tests are half from the book & half from the notes. He checks role sometime and gives extra credit! Tests are average, just read the chapt.

I made a C in the class, and i'm and A/B student, and i still am sooo glad i took Dr. Bates. His class is so much fun! His stories are hilarious. I would take him again if i didnt have to take the tests. His tests are killer. Half textbook (which you dont go over in class so you have NO idea whats its on) and half notes you take in class.

He's a funny teacher BUT his class is ridiculously hard. His quizzes are really difficult. You HAVE to read the chapters in order to make even a decent high C or low B. Only take this class if you're willing to read a lot and study a lot.

Dr Bates is an AMAZING person and a great teacher. His tests can be difficult, but it's because he's trying to prepare you for grad school. He's very entertaining and funny. He really cares a lot about each and everyone of his students. His courses are no cake walk though. Be prepared to study as instructed.

Not an easy A. Have to read a chapter weekly (~40pgs)& take quizzes. He'S pretty lenient, only grades 8/12 of them. He scales every test (AT least 12pts everytime, & 30 on final) The notes are online but YOU HAVE TO READ THE BOOK OR YOU'LL FAIL. Definitely not easy but he's a funny guy. Attendence not mandatory. Made over 100 in his class.

He is a great professor! His lectures are very interesting, but his tests are pretty difficult. YOU HAVE TO STUDY!! Also, he has timed online quizzes you take on every chapter. These are also pretty difficult. He offers some bonus points throughout the year that will help a little at the end. I ended up with an A because I studied my butt off!

Take good notes from his lectures and you'll do good. write down the random facts he tells you. at least one off the wall fact he mentioned in class will be on a test. He's HILARIOUS and I thought the class was super easy. I made like a 97 just from taking good notes.

Larry is an amazing teacher. His classes are difficult, especially in the summer, but they are worth every single second. He will make you work to even get a B, and he does not round up even an 89.999. However, it's worth every second.

His class is awesome, great lecturer. I look forward to going! But tests are very very very tough! You must take notes all the time and read text book. There's only 3 tests and a final. Plus quiz grades, but quizzes barely count and are very easy to master(they're online) highly recommend if you can buckle down and study!

I took his very first online class he ever taught. It was one of the best I've taken, because he uploaded video lecture for all of the chapters and gave us a weekly quiz. Be sure you read EVERYTHING in that week's chapter. and STUDY a lot. Luckily, he scaled every single test or I would not have gotten a B. I recommend him if you enjoy Psychology.

Hey this guy is for real and has lived life to the fullest, he can connect with anybody and conveys the material with passion and in a way anybody can understand. Almost all tests are 50/50 between class lecture notes / book material. TAKE NOTES EVERY CLASS. just write down what he says and enjoy having a teacher who will really meet you half way.

Dr. Bates was great. I enjoyed attending his class. He made the material very interesting by conveying his passion for the subject. His tests are difficult, 50/50 notes and book reading. However, he cut us slack by scaling them, usually 10+ points. It is not impossible to make an A in this class, but you must study hard.

I absolutely loved Dr. Bates class! It was the highlight of my day. He often gives quizzes, which are book generated, so I highly recommend reading the book. His tests are pretty tough, but if you pay attention in class and read the book you'll do fine. I would definitely take his class again.

Dr. Bates is an amazing and passionate individual. He definitely knows his stuff. I have taken him for several courses and they are all structured the same way: three or four tests (95% from the book and 5% from noteslecture), a comprehensive final, textbook-based quizzes, and a few participation assignments. Take him but be ready to study.

LOVED his lectures. Gotta read to pass. Tests make you think. not definitions and easy stuff. You have to understand the material. Made a D but still liked the class. the D was my fault for being lazy, not his fault for not teaching.

He is my absolute favorite professor. This cals is different from his others, it is not as hard but extremely interesting if you participate/have a good class. You get to drop 4 of the homework grades. Even if you aren't interested in religion TAKE THIS CLASS.

I'm not even a Psych major and Dr. Bates has become one of my favorite professors at UNA. He provides short, concise lectures for his online class. The PP are provided and he makes it clear to study them along with the book. His quizzes and exams have very strict time limits so be sure to study. No time for hesitation or second guessing.

Very lovable professor. The class does require a lot of reading and paying attention to lecture, but you learn effectively. Hes super caring, usually replies to emails within minutes, and has plenty of stories to tell. Just work hard and respect him, and you should get a good grade and awesome learning experience.

My favorite professor on campus! His lectures are very interesting, he has many many interesting stories to tell. His class will teach you how to study if you haven't figured it out yet. Just stay on top of the homework and take good notes, and he will help you where he can.

Dr. Bates was VERY realistic in the intro to psych major class. He spent a lot of time telling us what he did wrong trying to get into grad school so we dont make the same mistakes. He tells a lot of fun stories.

Dr. Bates is absolutely amazing. Hes funny and interesting and makes the lectures fun to listen to. However it is a very work intensive class. Some weeks youll have 15 assignments due. Some of them you have to start before the due date too (Mindtap makes you take breaks when learning the vocabulary).

Larry Bates truly cares about his students. He taught this class online during the COVID-19 pandemic and could not have done a better job. He gave opportunities for extra credit and even gave 'Covid-19' extra credit points because he knew students struggles during this semester! Highly suggest watching/attending all of his lectures & read the text!

Dr. Bates is incredibly smart. He can be a bit tough, but he can also be very compassionate. His praise is highly respected and appreciated. His courses are tough, you need to stay with it and aware of due dates and study material, but you will learn something from him if you pay attention and do the work.

If you take the online class LISTEN TO THE LECTURES the open stacks is important for the quiz grades (which are a safety net for your grade). The test are pretty hard. I do not recommend taking this class on an eight week term because there is a chapter due every other day and then test for three chapters. Very fast pace but a good professor.

Class is labor intensive. Tests are very difficult with some of the questions requiring a very abstract manner of thinking about material... you can't just regurgitate flash cards. Read the entire chapter and all assignments/ handouts. Work ahead. Study loads... it's work to get an A but it's doable.

I absolutely love Dr. Bates! The work was hard and I barely got a B, but class was always enjoyable. Lots of quizzes, but does drop lowest ones. Concept checks are easy points. Tests are difficult, but they weren't cumulative. Wish I could take another class of his, you never knew what kind of stories he was going tell. Passionate about his work.

I took Dr. Bates for Gen Psych and he is a phenomenal professor. I would definitely recommend him to anyone wanting to take a psych course, but beware that his tests are difficult if you don't study enough. He really engages with students and is easy to contact outside of class. He also scales test grades, which is always a plus!

While Prof. Bates is a tough professor, he is clearly knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches. The online PY-201 class is composed of lectures and quizzes (and a couple of exams). While these are difficult, Prof. Bates ensures that students have the info necessary to do well. Overall, I really enjoyed this class.

The tests are very hard but if you go to class AND read the book, you will pass with flying colors! Quizzes and tests are online. Quizzes are NOT proctored but tests ARE proctored. Dr.Bates gives good lectures and keeps them entertaining, he explains things thoroughly, and overall was an excellent professor. His exams and quizzes are mostly application questions and are not easy but if you study well, you should pass. You need to read the textbook for each chapter and attend class regularly in order to pass.

Dr. Bates' tests are HARD. That being said, he gives you all of the material you need for them. He is an amazing professor who is very knowledgeable on what he teaches. I loved attending his lectures, though attendance isn't required and he uploads the lectures on Canvas. I've had three classes from him and would switch back to psych just for him.

Bates is a wonderful professor who has been doing this for years. His classes do present difficult material but I continue to take his classes because of how much I learn. Very kind and smart teacher. He offers lovely lectures that really make you think.

Bates is a great professor and very funny. His lectures have few points so he can go in dept on the topics. He makes sure to thoroughly explain the material. His tests can be difficult but if you go to class and study the notes, you'll be fine.

He gives fun examples and gives away a test answer on each exam for being on time. He also drops the lowest quiz grades. Sadly, he will retire after the fall 2025 semester. Take him while you can! His class started difficult for me due to the fact his in class teachings prob cover 10% of the test. You have to teach yourself a lot of topics by reading the book. Not too bad though because he has a lot of cushion grades and gives a bunch of extra credit. As a person he's amazing though. He tells stories that help with remembering topics.

It's an absolute shame that Dr. Bates is retiring. If you had the pleasure of taking one of his classes, you would know that he was a professor like no other. He undoubtedly had some of the most engaging lectures I have ever been in, with fair and relevant coursework and material to go along with it. I could not recommend him more.
