Dr. Brown is a nice guy, but going to class is completely pointless because you will learn NOTHING. Reading the book probably wouldn't help much either. Going to outside tutoring would be the best idea for this class.
I've really enjoyed this semester in this class. It's a tough class, but its reasonable. Dr. Brown makes things pretty clear to understand.
He's a funny guy. Sometimes it's difficult to understand him because he talks a little fast. I didn't have problems understanding, but some people did. He's always willing to help-just go to his office hours-- he's pretty friendly. As long as you copy down the examples he works in class and do your hw, you'll be fine. I recommend this teacher.
Dr. Brown is a extremely nice guy as well as being a very good teacher. He is always willing to help during office hours and is actually kinda funny making chemistry lectures much less boring. Clicker questions done in class as part of grade. Tests arent bad, ex. and hw help a lot as well as a study session with his head TA right before the test.
He really enjoys chemistry and also wrote the class text book, so he knows what he is talking about. the tests were kinda hard, but I know people who got A's by barely studying, so natural chemistry ability helps. but overall a nice, understanding, guy who loves teaching chemistry!
Fast talker. Knows alot about chem.
Dr. Brown is a nice guy but I feel like there's no reason to go to his lectures. Outside tutoring is the way to go. Tests can be pretty tough. If you have any background in Chem a B is manageable.
He spoke clearly and was excited about teaching. I never went to office hours but I heard he was very helpful. He assigned seats for tests and kept a list of left-handers so they could be put in the correct seat.
Dr. Brown was very friendly and cared that his students learned the material. His homework assignments are very fair. My test grades were 97, 85, 93, and 97 on the final.I went to A+ tutoring after the second test and it helped me get an A.
Dr. Brown is a great prof but makes you work for your grade. Office hours are helpful. He works to make you understand the course instead of memorize. His tests are HARD and the homework takes hours. Class attendance is mandatory but pointless to go. Easy class if and only if you have no life and can spend all day reviewing the material.
The information for the course starts off not bad but gets harder as the semester progresses. All tests are manageable and he sticks to the same format as the past exams. Best way to study is to actually try to understand how to do problems instead of just learning how to because if you don't actually understand, the tests will be very hard.
Prepare to study your heart out. Dr. Brown is an amazing professor, but his exams are hard. He's willing to go over homework and exam questions during office hours, which is great, but I would really suggest doing the additional problems at the back of each chapter, since some of the exam questions come from there.
Dr. Brown is a amazing professors. His class wasn't one of the easiest, I must admit, but it's college, you have to put an effort to succeed. He enjoys teaching. Jokes a lot. His tests are challenging, but closer to the end of the semester, I was able to solve problems with my eyes closed.
Definitely my favorite professor this semester. He goes into enough detail for you to understand. If I was confused, I read the book. You can get the 2nd edition for dirt cheap nearby. You have to know the material for the test. He was always there to answer my questions and help me understand more. Get him, he's great.
Dr. Brown is a fast-talking and fascinating man. He loves what he teaches, but that doesn't mean he'll give out easy grades. Go to office hours, do problems from the back of the book, and some outside tutoring wouldn't hurt. Great professor.
Brown is awesome! The homework is online, fairly easy, and even comes with hints when you get stuck. Definitely the professor you want if chemistry isn't your strong suit.
If you put forth effort you can pass this class
Larry is awesome. He wrote the book so he knows what's up and how to explain it. His tests aren't that bad but you have to study for them, he gives you past exams so do all of them and you should be fine. He does some experiments in class that are super cool. Find a study group, do the homework, go to class, take notes, etc. You got this!
This class is so hard.....
Dr. Brown is a great professor. His joy for chemistry is clear as soon as you walk into class. Although his class is hard, it's fair. Dr. Brown loves helping students understand chemistry better and is easy to talk to. If you work, you'll get an A.
Dr. Brown is very enthusiastic about his class! If you aren't so great in chemistry expect the extra help but his exams are pretty predictable on what he will ask because he gives you previous exams. Take him! He's great! Chemistry is tough in general but in my opinion he's the best professor
Very hard class, the lab is even harder
Has a real passion for chemistry and knows how to teach. Homework for the class is pretty math heavy, but the exams are not. Exams are like puzzles that you have to get used to. Concepts in lectures were pretty easy to understand but I read the book before hand, so I would recommend that.
Tough tests, he wrote the textbook so you actually have to read it. Class is mostly math based.
Best Chem 107 prof
Dr. Brown's class is extremely hard. All his tests are write out, no multiple choice. He'll help you during office hours, but unless you're a chem god you'll probably need to go to tutoring. I personally would not recommend his class.
I always enjoyed his class, but definitely need to spend more time studying for his tests than some other professors. He has a lot of resources online (notes, previous tests) that are useful to look over. His office hours are also super helpful, and I visited him several times. He grades tough but its doable... just be prepared to study hard!
Tough Class. Tests are fully write out, class is basically just another math class.
Larry Brown was very nice and passionate about his subject however I wouldn't retake his class for Chemistry. Who knows maybe if he somehow switches to a subject I enjoy more I would retake his class but overall Chem teachers my friends has were much easier if you're just trying to pass. Nice guy, hard class.
This guy hands down knows how to teach. I only had taken chemistry at the sophomore level (that's required by the state) in high school and had no opportunity for AP Chemistry. I walked through this class and it's because of how easy he makes it. He forces you to learn the processes of what's happening, not memorizing. Easily my favorite professor.
Dr. Brown was a great chem professor! He explains the material very well during the lectures, but be sure to spend a lot of time on your own preparing for the exams. His exams are brutal and all free response. There are clicker quizzes in every lecture so make sure you go to class. Overall, I enjoyed learning engineering chemistry from him!
Though he is a very charismatic and charming guy, he lacks greatly in willingness to help. With Dr. Brown there is such a thing as a stupid question and he will be the first to point it out and laugh at your face. Is not the worst professor ever, lectures are interesting, but be willing to read and seek help from outside sources.
At first I hated the class, but as I learned how he tested, and what to pay extra attention to in lectures, I started to do a lot better. Also, he seemed unwilling to help at first, but after every lecture I went to his office hours with questions and slowly broke him down. If you're willing to work, then I recommend Dr Brown.
If you have taken an advanced chemistry class before, then Brown may be right for you. If you plan on majoring in something that doesn't require heavy knowledge of chemistry, DO NOT TAKE BROWN. If you need to know a lot, then go ahead. He wrote the textbook, so he knows what he's talking about. Tests are hard, tutoring may be required. No easy A's.
Generally thought of as hardest chem 107 professor. Not because he is a bad teacher but his tests are incredibly hard. He is actually the author of the textbook that every chem 107 student uses (no one actually reads it though it's mainly through lecture). So that tells you he is very very smart which is why his tests are so difficult. His tests are all free response where most other chem 107 profs have multiple choice. And a lot of other classes have 75 mins for test while he gives you 50 mins. Actually grades pretty nicely with partial credit but a lot of the times his questions at the end of the test (the REALLY hard ones) no one has a clue how to answer them.
Larry B is an interesting character. His lectures are good and he is very knowledgeable. Writes the textbook, so reading is important. Daily clicker questions. Tests are considerably more difficult than all other 107 professors.
Larry Brown wrote the book so he is the book. Very good lecturer who provides context and alternate explanations for material generously. Willing to take pretty much all questions. The book is great for reference but he covers mostly everything in lecture. Class comes with a "pre-curve" and he writes his own tests.
Dr. Brown is probably one of the most well-rounded 107 professors in the department. He gives great lectures, and is a bit quirky, or eccentric. Funny character, and covers most of the material in class. Notoriously known however for giving the hardest exams, however. Great guy, good instructor, would take again.
Dr. Brown is an awesome professor and he is great at what he does. But his tests are known for being the hardest ones out there. Most people don't get an A in his class even with a lot of studying. You don't want to skip his class, there are 2 clicker questions a day. Theres a homework set every week, 3 exams and a final. The tests are very tough.
Very smart man that generally cares for his students. Very fast at grading and always gives feedback. Homework is due once a week but can be done in 2 hours.
He's a great professor but his tests are much more difficult than some of the other professors. if you want to actually learn chemistry, take him. If not then find someone else.
Brown is probably the smartest professor out of any other chem 107 professors. Though because of his intelligence he likes to make his tests hard just cause he can. He'll claim that a lot of the tests are "easy" but when you get a doctorate from Princeton, I'm sure anything will be easy in a freshman level course.
Very hard prof., homework isn't bad and he has 2 clicker questions per class. His tests are very hard compared to all the other professors tests. I would only take him if he is last resort or you are stupid good at chemistry.
Brown is a very intelligent individual, and unless you are just as smart I would not recommend him. The way he explains things in class can be very confusing and hard to understand unless you have read ahead in your chapters. Outside tutoring is basically required to pass this course. I think A+ tutoring saved half my class.
Loved Dr. Brown's class! Tests are all free response so they are difficult but the homework sets and practice tests on his website are very useful. His lectures are informative and he often does cool experiments in class. It is helpful to have some basic chemistry knowledge before taking this class because a lot of information is covered quickly.
I came in only having a high school chemistry class in my chemistry background and have never struggled so much in a class before. His tests are very hard and are all open-ended. Get a season pass to A+, they will definitely help. Dr. Brown is a very smart man, he even wrote the book, but this class is very fast paced so be ready to work hard.
Dr. Brown was by far the best professor I had my first semester of my freshman year. His lectures are clear and consistent and he is willing to explain anything if you just raise your hand. Although all his lectures are online be sure to attend them and take notes. Homework couldn't be more scarce and there are 4 tests. He wrote the textbook, too.
Dr. Brown is incredibly passionate about his subject and speaks knowledgably about it. However, in his lecture's he speaks very fast and as if you already have a deep understanding of the material. I didn't learned one thing in his lectures, A+ Tutoring is the only reason I passed the class. Tests are also totally free response and very difficult.
Dr. Brown was a great professor. All his notes are online, but he doesn't put completed examples online so you have to go to class. He is very knowledgeable and is always willing to help. I'm not a huge fan of chemistry, but I loved attending his lectures. Test are a little difficult, but if you know material you will do fine.
It is clear that Dr. Brown is passionate about chemistry. His lectures are entertaining. The exams are pretty difficult, as they are all free-response, but many exam questions are very similar to the online homework questions. This class is designed to be difficult, but Dr. Brown does nothing to make it harder than it needs to be.
The class is meant to be difficult and Dr. Brown does a good job of making you actually learn the material. However, he can go fast at times or seem like he belittles the students. The class is definitely easier if you have taken chem AP before and even then you do have to really try for an a. Homework is pretty short and very similar to tests.
He's a big fan of hard homework, not a lot of homework. His lectures are good, but he's a little hard to reach outside of class. It takes a certain personality for him to like you. Overall, not a bad prof, and probably the best one that teaches the class. Tests can be very hard, and the class covers a lot of material.
If your major is chemistry or related to chemistry in any way, I would definitely take him. Great chem lecturer and although his exams are difficult, I left that class with tons of knowledge about the subject. Does clicker questions daily for a grade so attendance is a must.
His exam average is always failing (60s) while all other profs exams are in mid 80s. Do not take this prof if you want a good grade as he teaches and makes high school level chemistry difficult for no reason. Clicker questions are 5% of your grade so attendance is basically mandatory as well. I would give him a 0/10 if it was possible.
He wrote the textbook you use for this class, yet you hardly use it. He tells you everything you need to know in lecture, and leaves his notes online. His homework is tough, but you have unlimited tries to get the question right. He posts practice tests, so you know what kind of questions will be on there. His tests are hard, but doable.
Does well for a Lecture of about 300. He is relatively funny, and he gives weekly homework, except for certain weeks after a test. The class is hard, and Brown gives hard tests, and sometimes will make them harder if the class has been doing well. He tries to help best he can with the companion lab. He also usually answers questions in lecture.
Dr. Brown knows his stuff and is good at communicating information. Go to class because 1.) they're fairly interesting (even if you don't like chem) 2.) he works problems ONLY in class that aren't on the slides 3.) 2-3 clicker questions per class. The exams are hard- work out problems as much as you can and repeat.
He is a really good Prof. He just really makes you work for your grade. I took Chem 2 AP in highschool so i sort of knew what was going on but i still had to study hard before tests and read tesxtbook before lectures
Dr. Brown is a great prof. He is clearly passionate about chemistry but he will definitely make you work for your grade. His tests are pretty tough but he puts old exams up on his website to study off of. Go to his lectures because he explains everything really well. Sometimes he can be a little sassy but he's a good prof.
Wouldnt of passed without A+. Tests are ridiculous. Attendance is checked by clickers. I would not recommend; take Goodie
There's barely any hw compared to all the other CHEM 107 classes. He is a really amazing professor, but He wrote the book so he really knows what He's talking about. His class will be pretty hard if you didn't take AP Chem, but all In all one of the harder profs for this class
I honestly did not like his class to much. His tests were very hard compared to other professors and I did not feel that his lectures were helpful. Most of the learning takes place on your own. I would recommend taking another professor if possible.
If you haven't taken chemistry since sophomore year of high school or don't have a strong understanding of it, don't expect an A. Dr. Brown is extremely smart but not the best lecturer. His tests are the hardest out of all the professors and includes a lot of free-response long work out questions. You will have to work extremely hard in this class.
His tests are extremely difficult .He only gives out previous tests with just the answers, which doesn't help that much. If you want to learn, you have to really make time or go to his office hour and ask. All his test averages are around 60. If you are really good at Chem or don't care GPA, go take him.
Brown is the hardest chem 107 prof and your GPA is better off if you take someone else. If you get stuck with him, go to A+ and study hard because his tests are really tough. He is a really sweet man and will help you if you ask. It's really hard to be mad at him when he giggles at himself during class.
He's an experienced professor and an excellent lecturer. In fact, he wrote the textbook you use, although you don't really need to use it except for studying. He's really cool, and pretty funny as well.
Dr. Brown is a very smart person, so his pace is often faster than the students can keep up with. The textbook is optional, although he wrote it so his test questions are similar to the textbook problems. He has clicker questions but a lenient, participation-based grading system so you can miss a few and be fine.
He's a good prof, and genuinely cares about his students. That said, he makes his class quite a bit more difficult than all of the other chem profs, so if you're willing to work a little harder and don't mind having tougher exams then take him, you'll actually learn something. If you just want an easy A, take someone else.
Tests are very difficult and have a heavy weight on the class. Posts past tests online with the answers but no worked out solutions on how to get the end result. He started a new style of testing this fall and previous tests were very different. Gives weekly homework. Also has an optional textbook that I didn't find useful. Go to outside tutoring!!
This man was the wake up call I needed for college tbh. If you didnt take AP chem or have sufficient prior knowledge, be prepared to work and study like you have never before. His tests are fiendishly hard not only because of content, but also because of time. He teaches very well but his tests will ruin your aspirations to become an engineer.
Toughest tests in107. Lots of students admired his lectures, but I thought they were a bit over my head. Definitely invest in a season pass at A+ Tutoring. Get as much practice as you can working out difficult problems (see his old tests and A+ tutoring reviews before the tests- merely reviewing class notes will fail. He cares about his students.
I hated this class with a passion at first but honestly looking back it wasn't that bad. Clicker question every lecture but 80% 100%, I skipped a reasonable amount of time tbh. I never really understand anything in class yet somehow studying the night before and still pass the exams with 70s. Only studied 3 hrs for final bc I got sick but issa B!
Chem 107 is a "weed-out" class regardless of the professors. Although Prof. Brown's tests are super hard (worse than the AP Chem exam), coming to his office hours after class will help you understand the concept better and prepare you for the exam. Prof. Brown can be humorous and cares a lot about his students (especially those in the front rows).
1) Doesn't do much problems in class. 2) Tests are hard and not enough time to complete them. 3) Attend every class or you will fail.
Brown is a decent prof, a good guy but doesent do the best job at clearly explaining the concepts. If you want to do well/understand the material, then GO TO 4.0 TUTORING @ northgate it's a must. There's a lot of online hw due every week but as long as you stay on top of it you should be alright. majority of grade is tests and he grades them hard
The only class i got a B in. Class is way harder than any other chem 107 professors class. Man wrote the textbook so he knows how to make a class fail a test. Will literally make a test impossible if a class is doing to well on his tests. In order to get an A you're going to have to do a ton of problems and just practice a ton or go to A+ tutoring.
Extremely hard to follow, too smart for his own good. didn't skip class once and still had an extremely difficult time. Went to A Plus, which had helpful tips but I am definitely making a point to not retake brown's lecture. Non-flexible office hours and I could never make it due to other classes. Made me hate chemistry even more than I did in HS.
Dr. Brown is easily the hardest professor that I've ever had. He takes pride in having low class averages because he equates that to having a "good" class. If you go to office hours, he'll make you feel dumb and will laugh at your frustration. The test are extremely hard compared to the other classes, so prepare yourself weeks in advance.
Really smart guy that knows what he's talking about but is on another level. Hard to pay attention in class. Helpful during office hours but won't do the problem. Just pay for the season pass at A+ tutoring and you should make at least a B. They "brought" my test average from a 63.5 to like an 83.
I took Dr. Brown last semester for 107, and he's super funny and seemed to really care about how we did. There is weekly online homework, but you have unlimited tries on each question and you can message him through the site to get help. This is definitely not an easy course- the tests are pretty hard- but if you put in work you should be fine.
Go to class and follow the lectures. Tests are based on homework problems.
Professor Brown gets a bad rep because of his hard tests, but he is a good lecturer and wants you to actually learn chemistry. His class is a hard A (I was just over the line) but is not nearly as impossible as everyone says it is. His A range is 87-100 and his B range is 75-86.
Prepare to study hard for Dr. Brown's class, because it is nowhere near an easy A. But with that being said, I would definitely recommend Brown. He is extremely helpful during office hours, and he knows the content like the back of his hand. The man wrote his own textbook, so I'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing.
Larry knows his stuff, but sucks at teaching it. He wrote the book we use, so reading it is just as hard as understanding him. A+ is the way to go. I've worked harder than ever before in this class, and I'm going to hopefully end up with a B. Not impossible, but try to get someone else.
He is a good teacher but his tests are significantly harder than any other chemistry professor. I had to work harder in this class than I have in any other class and I am leaving it with a C. Nice man but his class is ridiculous.
He is a really nice guy but his class is hard. If you had a hard chemistry teacher in high school and really learned how to think through chemistry problems then you should do fine.
Brown is a really good professor. I don't know why everyone thinks he is really hard. I had a really hard AP chem teacher in high school so maybe I was more prepared than most, however if you do the homework, read the book, and work the old tests, his class is quite easy.
I loved this class. I think anyone who has difficulties with Dr. Brown aren't putting in their fair of effort. If you do most of the reading, show up to class, do the homework, and do some practice exams, you'll get an A. It might sound like a lot but its completely manageable and doesn't take too much time.
Dr. Brown is a very nice guy, but easily the hardest teacher I've ever had. Compared to all the other CHEM 107 teachers, his tests are about 100 times harder because he wrote the book. Would not take again because his tests are insanely hard. Be prepared to get outside tutoring. Attendance is mandatory because of clicker questions in every class.
Larry is definitely not the easiest CHEM 107 professor, but his class really forces you to understand the concepts rather than regurgitate the formulas. He is a great lecturer and person, and if you do all your work you'll likely get an A. Take him if you really want to learn the content.
Favorite prof of last semester! Very sweet guy! 11/10 would recommend. How to get an A: Go to office hours, please! Yes, tests were hard, but I had almost no chemistry experience and still did well mostly cause I went to office hours regularly. Make sure you know the problem sets well before tests. Find a study buddy! Textbook is helpful.
Dr. Brown is a great teacher who truly cares about teaching his students. If you took AP chem (and decently understood it), this class will be a breeze.
Brown is a funny and interesting lecturer, and it really helps to go to every class and take notes. He does not assign a lot of homework. But, you gotta study before the exams because they are a serious time crunch and have some trick questions. He is helpful during office hours.
If you didn't learn high school chemistry really well there is basically no chance you can pass this class. He relies on you already understanding chemistry and is very hard to understand. He goes on tangents and whenever he explains a topic it is hard to keep up. I learned more in my countless hours of tutoring than I did from any of his lectures.
i didt take ap chem in hs so this class was def a struggle! brown's tests were insanely challenging. the point distribution btwn the free response and multiple choice really brought down my grade and i had to drop it. lectures were good, hes a goofy dude, and def go to office hours and the si sessions for help! go over old exams and you should pass
Dr. Brown was a great teacher and was a good teacher for my first semester of college. Chemistry has never been an enjoyable subject for me, but the way that Dr. Brown teaches is pretty interesting and I was engaged to his lectures. He writes difficult tests, but they are definitely not impossible to pass if you pay attention and do the homework.
Dr. Brown makes you work for it. Mine was all online and almost impossible to focus. The class GroupMe saved my butt (ily chemcels). Dr. Brown is a very nice guy, but his quizzes and tests are genuinely really hard. It's entirely possible to work as hard as you physically can and still make a B. Doesn't really curve. It's doable, but be careful.
Dr. Brown is a very nice man who wants his students to succeed. His class is slightly challenging, but he is very easy to talk to and get feedback from. You have to study for the quizzes, but if you understand the material, you will pass.
First off, having AP chemistry knowledge will save your grade for the first half of the semester. I did not have any pre-existing knowledge and had to work hard for the grade I got in the class. He wrote the textbook, so reading will be extremely helpful for quizzes and exams. Easily the hardest class I have taken. Shout out chemcels.
Dr. Brown is super nice and a good lecturer. I started skimming through the videos and just read the textbook and easily understood everything. Having prior AP chem helps a lot, but even if you didnt take AP chem, it's still pretty easy to understand the material. Participate in the questions during class though.
If you have no Chem AP knowledge this class will be extremely difficult. Study in class questions and owl homework to pass quizzes/test. I passed by learning the material on my own through youtube. He also makes some concepts a lot harder than they should be. Nevertheless shoutout to CHEMCELS
He's amazing. I don't know why it has a 3.5 or whatever, chemistry is hard and the class was not easy. HE is amazing, will be extremely patient and answer all questions, is extremely organized, knows what he's talking about, and wants you to succeed. Work hard and you'll be fine.
I had to take this class twice, but it was not Dr. Brown's fault. He is a great teacher and clearly outlines what is expected. Super helpful and wiling to work with you for makeup work/ tests. I recommend really taking time to understand problem sets, not so much reading the book. His slides are all you need to pass the class!
Gives group homeworks. Practice exams are very similar to the actual exams, and the final is very close to questions you've seen on exams. Does iClicker but you only need 5/6 of the points to get full credit for them. There's a reason Brown is the goat PChem professor.
Dr. Brown is a great professor- his classes were very engaging and easy to follow. All homework was group-based, making it very easy to prepare in groups for tests. His exams are not particularly difficult if you have a good grasp of math and pay attention to lectures.
His class is the hardest class I have taken at A&M. However, he was a great professor. Kept things lighthearted and brought some fun into P-Chem when he could. He explained things well and always had a funny giggle. Seems like a great guy and an even better professor. Take him if you can.
Dr. Brown is a very good professor. He made pchem very digestible even when it did not seem like it. He also gave ample exams for practice and was available for questions. He is sadly retiring, but if he wasn't he would definitely recommended.
