Very thorough, gives a lot of work, HARD tests

Wears socks on the outside of his pants
He is kinda scary when talking to the whole class but in office hours and lab he is extremely nice. He is extremely helpful and he seems to really care about students. He loves chemistry and seems to really enjoy teaching.
Mean little man. Helpful in office hours but a butt hole otherwise and forget about getting the grade you deserve "you are a professional and life doesnt give you what you deserve"
I think that he felt like he needed to take it upon himself to weed out students who don't want to go all the way. Tests are pretty difficult. Kinda scary in class (lectures) but if you approach him he is willing to work with you!
To him everything is pretty straight forward. I don't feel like he explains things in enough detail. After he embarrassed a student in class no one asks any questions.
He is a great teacher who will spend lots of time outside of his office hours to help his students. He gives huge amounts of extra credit every semester. He is probably the fairest teacher I have ever known
Forget what these other fools wrote. This man can teach.Yes, he tore into one student in Fall of 2003, but that kid was a moron. I was there and laughed at him. Take him and you will learn your CHEM for sure, great teacher and he takes no crap.
I dont think that his test accurately represent the material all the time. To clarify, if there are 3 skills for example that need to be tested, they will all possibly be tested in one problem, meaning that a weakness in any one will represent a weakness
These peaple are deceitful!!!!! He is a terrible teacher. Who is outrageousness towards international students. Do not take him!!!!!
Very hard teacher... you have to teach yourself
Chamusco is a hard, has a different way of teaching, you learn in office hours not in class so if you want to do well be prepared to go to one hour of lecture and 2 of office hours a day. If you do that and do all the EC then you might get a C.
this guy does everything in class besides teaching.. if you want to sit in a classroom and listen to stories, or work on one (1) problem for more than 20 min, until the teacher gets bored and explains the problem himself, this is the right class for you
Real Strict and Uptight, no humor, offers help in office, but gives impression that you're stupid if you don't understand
looks like john lovitz and is about as annoying. you will not succeed unless "you are a professional" it is chem 1 but he expect us to be doctors and engineers already. help yourself and dont take him. if u must--spend your life in his offic
he really sucked at teaching
very difficult teacher. you have to teach yourself and he makes you feel stupid when you're not sure about something. his office hours do help though. i suggest taking someone else. homework problems often do not reflect test material.
His test are pretty easy. He gives lots of partical credit! He only gives you a notice for a test about 5-4 days before. you have to go to every class and his office hours to keep up

Most Anal Retentive A@#hole I have ever met. Too late for me but save yourself!
This guy is very hard. He spends most of the class telling stories or asking students to talk amongst them selves. Gets confusing if you are right or your neighbor is right. Doesn't give much notice for tests and he takes lab way to serious.
He is intimidating in class for the purpose of teaching people to be professionals. In person, he is very very helpful and interested in your success, but you must look past his classroom persona. Hard tests, but fair. Make good use of his office hours.
Pay no mind to the crap you hear about this man. Professor Larry, maybe a lil difficult, but that is to make sure you know the differences in what you are studying. He gives you plenty of oppurtunities to bail yourself out, if you care to. He loves what he does, and you see it in his teachings.
Don't bother going to class. Treat his office hours as you clas times and go to every one you can. Most of the class is spent telling stories bearing little relevance to the subject at hand. Kind of creepy. Looks like a guy that lives in his mother's basement and collects children's lunchboxes...
Chamusco is a great teacher. Hard class, but he keeps things interesting and entertaining. Gives plenty of chances for extra credit on tests. The labs suck, and he can be kinda condescending sometimes, but still a great teacher. Best chem teacher I've had!
Chamusco is an awesome professor. I hate chemistry, but he made it interesting through current events, and open discussions in class. He is the most helpful professor I have ever had (office hours are great!), and he actually wants you to learn. Lots of extra credit opportunities.
I took him for chem 1 and Nielson for Chem 2, TAKE NEILSON. Neilson might be harder but atleast he knows what he is talking about, Chamusco doesn't teach, I left Chem 1 not knowing anything and got into chem 2 and had to start all over, I got a B but for someone who doesnt know chem, DONT TAKE
for the love of god do not take a class with this man. i just sat in his class wishing i had a gun so i could put myself out misery. you could not pay me to take another one of his classes.
This guy has got to be the worst! His class seems easy until you start receiving your grades the last week of class. He will spend three hours plus lab teaching you something you can learn in 20 minutes with a half-decent teacher.
This guy does some things very well, and others just terrible. He takes way too long to grade things, and you don't know your grades until the end of the semester. He makes some things more difficult than i think they should be. However, I have to give him due credit for his diligence in his fiel
I couldn't of asked for a better professor. His office hours are invaluable, he is awesome at teaching his subject and doesn't make you feel stupid for bumbling through a problem. You have to put in a little effort, but hey it is chemisty.
Really enjoyed learning from someone who actually knows how to teach instead of putting up formulas and having you know them for an exam. will be taking him for Chem 3. Wish I would have had him for chem 1
This is an awful teacher! Looks like the actor Jon Lovitz, but not funny. Always tries to pick a fight with a student who doesnt agree with him. Thinks he's so smart and doesnt answer questions properly. He just gives you some educated sounding answers, but isn't quite near the answer-may be why some kids here think he's great-he just sounds smart.
I'm sure he knows his chemistry but he cannot teach it to save his life. The entire class period is spent telling stories rather than the subject matter. You will never recieve a graded paper until after the withdrawl date has passed so you really can't tell how you are doing until it is too late.
TERRIBLE! that's all I have to say!! Stay away!! Your GPA will suffer! It's a class that you either ace it or bomb it terribly!
I warn you guys, he is so horrible, Horrible, stay away, otherwise he will fail you. He teaches you one thing, he tests you another thing. Can't handle with this guy anymore. Take another teacher if you can
It's sad but true...What a semester..He'll look at you like you're dumb if you ask a question and he thinks it's easy, but he can never explain what the real answer is..Got a headache everytime I left his class..invest in tylonol...Lecture is horrible
His lectures are interesting but have very little bearing on what is tested on. If you really want to learn chemistry and go to his office hours you will. He knows the history behind goats and lunch box coatings. If you want a class where the tests are predictably from lecture material you've actually covered, this probably isn't the class for you.
This class will make you cry. I spent my days before class in his offices fighting for help everyday and barely scraped by. There were only a handful of people left by the end of the semester. If you value your sanity, do not take this class unless you absolutely have to! The final exam had nothing to do with anything! So depressing...
DO NOT take this teacher! I'm convinced the class is designed to make you fail. I should have listened to prior postings. He spends more time telling stories rather than teaching chemistry. You might as well teach yourself. He makes a hard subject extra hard. There are hardly any students left in my class. Avoid this teacher!
He answers questions w/questions. He doesn't show up to his office hours or he's always late. He tells you, you'll get a 100% on labs if you go to his office but he'll still find reasons to mark off points. He will do anything to stay off topic & posts all of your grades @ the last minute.
Mr C. is a great guy and very helpful. His class is not easy, but he wants you to learn how to think. Success in later hard science courses is all about critical thinking, and MR. C. attempts to teach that. He is VERY helpful at office hours. A heck of a nice guy.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. He was always late to class (15-30 min) and then would keep us longer than the scheduled time. His cell phone rang numerous times throughout each lecture. The lectures barely had any relevance to chemistry, it was more like story time, and therefore we were never taught what was actually on the exams.
This guy is a joke. He spends more time harrassing students to inflate his enormous ego, rather than teaching. I am irritated with him. AVOID!
I took professor Chamusco for all three of my chem classes. He explains material clearly, takes the time in office hours to help you if you need it, and goes out of his way to help you understand the material. He teaches by the Socratic method (ask's a questions, you answer), he is not trying to make you feel dumb. Best professor I have had here.
He is a nice guy. Very helpful but has a unique method of teaching. If he's reading this, all I want to let him know is that when his cell phone rings during class, it's a rude thing (distraction) too. But overall I recommend him for students who want to learn chemistry well enough. Recommended for Science majors!!! Good Job Chamusco!
I was a student of his a several years ago. His teaching sucks and he is a jerk! He inflates his own ego while "leveling" yours. He told me that I would never get into a Physical Therapy program. I would just like to let him know that I graduated PT school with honors and now own my own Physical Therapy pratice! HA!
he ok
Struck me as someone you just have to get to know. Definitely eccentric and perhaps offputting initially, with so-so lectures (often interesting, but not always clarifying,) though very helpful in office hours. Beware: the department final is killer, and you prob'ly won't be fully prepared, so grab as much EC as possible. (He gives quite a bit.)
Wow I can't believe what some of these people are saying! He is etremely helpful and you only need 85% for an A (and yes theres partial credit). Plenty of extra credit and office hours. Don't get me wrong this is a demanding class but hey thats chem for ya.
Good Teacher. Very helpful in Office hours. Gets on tangents which takes away from learning time. All in all a good but hard class. Very fair.
At first he will come across as a super-egotistical-know-it-all, but give him a chance and you might find that you actually like him quite a bit! He goes slow and is EXTREMEMLY helpful in office hours. Really wants you to understand. He can REALLY get into his lectures! Lots of energy! Oh, and VERY fair grading system!
If you want to get a good grade you must attend his class. His extra credit is you showing up and taking the quizes. He is very helpful during office hours. Overall he was a good teacher.
If you want to get a good grade you must attend his class. His extra credit is you showing up and taking the quizes. He is very helpful during office hours. Overall he was a good teacher.
Our class got screwed. Most of his office hours were in keystone, so it was difficult to contact him outside of class. He goes off on tangents, which makes the class linger on 45 minutes longer than it should. Tests are gradely fairly and he gives lots of extra credit. Practice conversions/equations so you'll be ready for the final.
Larry is an interesting guy. Comes off *way* too strong first class, almost threatening. Dude-- this is college level, you can chill a bit. Wastes a lot of class time with random stories, some are interesting, but not always. DEPARTMENTAL FINAL IS KILLER!!!!! REALLY HARD!!!! Chem is a tough subject. He will help you if you help yourself.
honestly... chamusco is probably one of the better teachers youre going to get at sfc. hes an awesome guy! he even has a facebook fan club. if you fail his class, its because you are lazy. its chemistry, you have to put in work. go to his office hours and he will help you with anything!
Mr.C is a great teacher during office hours but his class was kind of scattered. He does not have anything set to study for his tests and his notes are just not helpful at all. He gives you easy examples but hard problems on the tests. The way he grades is great. Overall he is a good teacher just go to his office hours.
If you plan on teaching chem to yourself youve foud the right teacher. Mr.C is a smart guy but his classes are just useless. You basically just have to teach yourself out of the book and go to class to listen to his elaborate stories that really dont help at all.Didnt have time to go to his office hours, hear there good, but what is class time for?
Mr. Chamusco is a unique teacher in his lecturing. I really enjoyed his stories on how he related chemistry to everyday life. He made chemistry interesting to me. He is also the only chemistry teacher to not use multiple choise test, so you do have to use your brain a little more!
Took this class with three other classes, while managing my four kids, and after being out of school for ten years. I am terrible at math and chemistry, but made a B in this class. Unique teaching style that I thought was GREAT! Book is somewhat helpful, Print EVERYTHING off the website. OFFICE HOURS ARE MANDATORY TO A GOOD GRADE!
Chamusco comes off as a mean guy, but really he is a true softie. He was probably one of the best teachers i have had. If you dont drop the class and go through the whole thing, it gets easier and he tries to help you as much as possible. In the end, if you dont take chamusco for into and chem 1 your a fool
He's ok once you get used to him. TONS of extra credit and 85% is considered an A, so he grades easy. He just has a wierd personality. Puts everything on website, so textbook is optional.
i did not like his teaching style and he's weird. he doesn't give you all the information in class so you have to go to his office hours to get clarification. annoying personality.
Not a bad guy, just not a good teacher. If you plan on doing well in his class you have to go to office hours, ask a lot of questions, and have the initiative to learn a lot of things on your own. just going to class and listening to lectures is not enough to do well in this class. If you take him, be prepared for a lot of work outside the class.
OFFICE HOURS ARE A MUST. He truly wants his students to succeed. He gives a ton of extra credit!! The book is not mandatory because he posts readings and optional worksheets online(will help on exam). Labs aren't too bad. WARNING: this class does requires a lot of time.
Likes to pause and stare dramatically. Hard teacher, but has a lot of office hours and is willing to help.
Wastes too much time in class, writes in small, barely legible script on the whiteboard and is a slow grader. I felt like he made learning/practicing the material more inconvenient than it needed to be. However, he's an easy A thanks to extra credit (relative to other professors; Chemistry is no joke and will require some effort to learn).
I took this guy in Spring of 2010. He's a decent guy. He does get easily side track. Like, if you walked up to him and said "puppy," he would be gone. Soemtimes this really interferes with class. His tests are difficult, but not mandatory. Decent labs. ALWAYS go to his office hours. Great guy. He'll make exceptions if you need one. Overall: 8/10
He was a 6/10 for me. Very helpful if you ask, but if you don't have a knack for chemistry/math you will need to study plenty. Labs are okay, ALWAYS do the extra credit quizzes. His lectures are not structured well enough to give you a full understanding of the material. If you don't have time for office hours(me) you need to compensate by studying
Omg where do I start he is simply amazing. Very helpful, one of the best Chemistry professors here. Loves Chemistry and thats what makes it more understandable. He tries his best to ensure to you'll pass if you simply put in the work. I had a F the majority of the semester but ending up with a C, I'm taking him for Chm 2046. Highly recommended!!
this guy saved me from loathing chemistry. i really struggled with chem 1 with a different professor, but chamusco is fantastic at teaching for different learning types, incorporating visual aids, non-chemistry models, many worksheets and practice problems that help guide your studying. and i LOVE that he relates chemistry to YOU and your life.
Chemistry is a demanding class in general but this guy... Oh Chamusco makes you learn this stuff. sometimes it gets annoying because you ask him something and then he goes off on tangents that dont relate. he means well. P.S. prepare to study 20+ hrs. a week for this class alone.
Simply the best. My CHM 2045 prof. made me think that I am one of the worst students. With Mr.Chamusco, I became confident again of my abilities and I got an A. Maybe our older CHM profs. need to ask Chamusco and learn from him how to teach.
Great teacher. Will teach everything plus more. Do not take him for an easy A, you will earn it, you will work, you WILL go to study groups. An A is possible, but I've never worked harder.
Very good teacher. He speaks with absolute precision and teaches clearly every thing plus more that one will need to know for the final. Though I got a B in his class, i got an A on the final, and i would recommend this class to anyone. He has office hours during which he will assist his students with any issues they might have.
Although his class is very time consuming and you must attend lecture and office hours, he is always willing to help. I learned precise laboratory skills and use them in my organic class now. An "A" is very possible considering it is only an 85%. Just be sure to study (homework problems from the book are very helpful)and keep up with the material.
Hard class. I did not have a very good chem background and he wastes a lot of time in class that doesn't pertain to the test material. You must study a lot. Very slow grader and it gets very annoying when you cannot find out how you are doing for 2 or three weeks waiting on a test.
Beware. If you have any interest at all in chemistry please stay away from this class. You will learn chemistry according to chamusco, not according to chemistry. If you have half a brain, you will be frustrated. Only a strict grader when he forgets to take his meds. Everyone who said this was hard is an IDIOT. Should have taken Swieter/Weinstein.
He was horrible! DO NOT TAKE! He does not teach in class, so after class you will have to spend another 2 hours in his office. Grading your tests takes 3weeks, so you don't even know how you are doing. Very condescending attitude.
I doubt this mans sanity. He is constantly having a temper tantrum and if you get in his way, watch out. Durning my semester he kicked our entire class out for "not bringing something" that he never asked for. He will specifically call people out for doing natural things. And worst of all, he knows absolutely nothing about chemistry.
Does not cover material that is on exams, or stays on Chem in class. To do good you have to go to office hours and that is no guarantee that you are prepared even if you know Chemistry well. Takes too much of your life because you do all the work, and teacher does none at all, no Joke.took CHEM 1&2for his curve-But Not Worth It.
This class sucked. Tests are extremely hard and dont reflect what is taught in class. HAVE to go to office hours if you want to pass. Very unorganized. Expects you to know things he is supposed to teach. Sadly from what i hear he is the best option. Made me hate chemistry. He makes it harder than it should be. Final exam average was a 59
Good thing is he gives extra credit and grades on a huge curve. Bad thing is that he HAS to because everyone does so poorly because his lectures are irrelevant to test material, and sometimes even chemistry. I never went to office hours, but a lot of students did, and according to them he was helpful then. Tests are very hard. Very late on grading.
For the first couple of weeks, I did not know what to think of Professor Chamusco. I neither liked nor disliked him; However, what I can now say is he is one of the best professors I've had. Chemistry isn't an easy class and requires a ton of studying (more than you'd imagine especially in the summer). I would definately recommend him to anyone.
Great teacher, the class is extremely demanding and requires a lot of reading/homework/office hour attendance. prepare to study! this guy can teach you about much much more than chemistry if you just talk to him. he helps some people in office hours with calculus even..
Had Chamusco for Intro to Chem in the summer. This is a very time consuming class, but he is a good teacher. Study hard, ask questions, and an A is possible (but difficult). Personally, he can be very condescending and arrogant (kind of an ass). Still a good professor who prepared me well for CHM 2045.
Excellent teacher! Chem is tough so you better be ready to study a lot, but he is there to help! Great in office hours! Show him that you want to succeed and he will help you. I would recommend him to anybody willing to put in the time.
Dont buy the book, its different from the test and the lecture...You have to spend hours in office hours to understand everything. Face it, its chemistry, its not going to be easy. He is helpful and forces you to apply yourself. If you work real hard (like 20hrs/week) you may make it out with an A
Chamusco is definitely not the easiest chem 2 professor at SF, but he is probably most reasonable. and yes, he is a slow grader. there is extra credit opportunities but make sure you do well in lab!take Nocito if you have no plans of taking orgo or any other sciences remotely close to challenging.take Larry if you need to take orgo or anything hard
I'm afraid to ask questions in fear of being ridiculed.
Mr.Chamusco is definitely the best chem professor you could ever ask for in SFCC. He is super knowledgeable, helpful, and seriously know how to teach! If you read his handout, take notes in class, and do his hw, you can't miss an A. His class is always interesting. He is always willing to help even if you are not in his class anymore. My fav prof!
Please DON'T take him. He is a nice guy outside class he really is, but his teaching style is horrible. Nothing he says in class is on the tests or covered well in the textbook. He also grades on a personal, bizzare scale. His random subject rants in class also don't help. Just very poor teacher
DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. With that warning out of the way, I have to say that Professor Chamusco made Intro to Chem a very intriguing and fun course. I know many in the class received poor marks because they thought Chamusco would just pass them an 'A'. Make sure to NEVER miss the simple online homework and quizes; those points at up!
He's awesome!! So helpful and patient if you attend his office hours. I have to agree with other posts: don't buy the book. NOT an easy A course but it's possible to do well if you ask questions during class and go to office hours. I learned a ton and really understood the concepts he taught. DO THE HOMEWORK. Highly recommended professor.
Not very helpful, he says you must study at least 20 hours a week just to receive a C. Homework is nothing like was taught in class. test are extremely hard never got over a 50 %. never stays on topic. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!
Do not take a class with him if you can avoid it!! He is a horrible teacher, and if you ask for help he makes you feel stupid and talks down to you. Save yourself!
STAY AWAY!!! Absolutely no structure never tells you what the point of the things he is teaching. Studied from the book, got a tutor. Still failed. .
He is one of the real chemistry teachers who wants you to learn the material and put it into your own words. If you are interested in learning chemistry or need to actually know it, take him and go to his office hours. He wants students to succeed, but he will not carry them if they don't put forth effort.
Absolute WORST teacher I have ever had! He makes you feel stupid if you ask questions, doesn't help in office hours, and never emails back or answers your questions. The tests are nothing like he says and our class average for tests were NEVER over a 50 %. Avoid taking him if possible!!
CONDESCENDING! HE KNOWS NO PHYSICS; ATTEMPTED TO EXPLAIN COULOMB'S LAW AND FAILED MISERABLY. TAUGHT IT INCORRECTLY TO AN UNSUSPECTING PEER OUTSIDE OF CLASS AND POTENTIALLY MADE HIM FAIL AN UPCOMING PHYSICS EXAM!!! WHAT A FOOL!!!
Mr. Chamusco is a very helpful teacher. He wants to help you learn. Don't be afraid to go to office hours, that is when I found him most helpful. He will explain anything you do not understand until you do. Very good chemistry teacher.
No. Just no. Don't take him. He makes everything so much more difficult than need be and when he gives you labs his instructions are basically useless they don't make any sense and when you ask questions it still doesn't help. Oh and asking questions during lecture it's like an attack he makes you feel stupid and it's rude the way he answers. NO!
Very passionate about his job. He truly wants you to learn and understand the material, but isn't the best at teaching it. Lectures are long and drawn-out, and the lab instructions can be extremely confusing. He's really helpful during his office hours, and will gladly walk you through any problems you're having.
I went to class every single day. I wrote down every single word he did and what he said. I read everything and did the optional work that he said would help 3 times over and I still got an F on the test. I don't fail classes, never have. I had to drop the class. He is a horrible teacher, you're better off learning from a 12 year old.
Short Answer: Do not take him. Long Answer: Tough tests (I mean tough), unorganized, inconsistent assignment due datesdetails, not clear on need to know material. Big on iclicker questions and extra credit. If you stay after the Withdraw period there's more extra credit but not worth it. Just barely passed. If you can't self learn, just don't.
A very good teacher. Make sure you go to office hours, that's where he helps you to solve most of your confusions. Tests are pretty tough relatively.
if you can avoid him, AVOID HIM! unless you clearly understand the objective your self he won't be very helpful in teaching you the material.
Chamusco was honestly a great professor. You will have to work for your grade. Hard! Read and practice the study guide and handouts until you know them. If you want to truly know and understand the material take him. His tests are tough but the final is easier.
I had Prof Chamusco for 2045 and now 2046. He made Chemistry very clear for me. He's very helpful in office hours, so there is no excuse for you not to do well in the class. His homework packets are very similar to the exams and he gives extra credit! I wish he taught Orgo because I would take him! Definitely recommend if you want to actually learn
This man's ego is out of control. If you want an A (or even a B) you have to be ready to attend his office hours so that he grades your work more nicely than the work of others in your class. He is incredible unorganized and flips out occasionally if he's in a bad mood. I wish there was a tag for "power trip"
This is the first class I've ever failed and it is waaayyyyy to stressful. The homework in the lab manual is nothing like the examples he does in class. He doesn't make study guides for the tests and you never have any idea what to study, which is probably why the class average for our first test was around a 36% DONT TAKE HIM IF YOU WANNA GET AN A
After 3 hours of lecture and lab with this guy, I had a headache. He doesn't let you pick your own lab partner so don't go in with the expectation of pairing up with your friend. He also forces you to switch partners every few weeks. The class average on exams was 50%. Teaching is a power trip for him. Save your GPA and take another teacher
Took Chem 2 with him and he was by far one of the most amazing teachers you'll either like him or hate him! He gives lots of work.. Funny thing it's extra credit and definitely boosts your grade. The best time is his office hours he gets off topic in class and doesn't give everything needed but ask for help he understands chemistry isn't easy!
While he does help in office hours, class was terrible. He would go off on tangents and yell at us for not knowing the material. Takes off points for every single wrong thing. There's a reason 2/3 of our class dropped and our test average was 50%. Would not take again.
Tested out of Intro to Chem & 2011, took Chem 1 that fall at a univ. and barely got a C. I signed up for him (2016) cuz he has bonus and has good prep for ACS final. WANT AN A? Go to office hours (10h/wk avail.). ONLY FINAL IS CURVED. Prepares u well for orgo, biochm, analyt., nuke, and pchm. "What is the always statement? Always go back to that!"
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Everyone in my class failed the first exam, and he still blamed the students. I even spent hours on the first lab with a tutor to make sure I did it right, and received a 0/10. He would not respond to me on why I got this grade. Albeit his lectures are entertaining, but way to hard of a grader, and this was just intro to chem.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. He just talk about everything except chemistry. He is not clear, he is not helpful, definitely not friendly and has a vein or racism
How does this man have a job? He is a sadist. He is a bad teacher and a bad grader. That vein of racism is noticeable too. I have no idea how Santa Fe still has him working there. He isn't in the class to teach the topic. If that were the case, you wouldn't have such high failures.
If you are totally in the dark as to what chemistry is... don't take this teacher. If you have some basic knowledge of chem. and are ready to learn, think , and be proficient with laboratory practices / procedures / and skills, sign up for Chamusco. He gives bonuses and a "curve! BUT be prepared to work. Be prepared to study. Be prepared to think.
I had Chamusco for Intro and Chem 1. Loved him for Intro, he was extremely helpful and easy to understand. However in Chem 1 he is not as helpful, no very clear in lecture, and always seems to rush things. He is a professor that you need to go to office hours to get help! However he is one of the better professors for Chem at SF.
For most of the semester I had no idea where I stood because no grades were posted in Canvas. Dates on the syllabus material for assignments and tests change without announcement. He rushed us at the end, lecturing new material on a Monday and testing us on it the next day of class (also the last day of the semester). Lectures seem unorganized.
How does this man have a job?? I have no problem with chemistry, but when it comes to taking it with him? Its a nightmare. He yells at the class and throws a fit if we don't know the answer, goes off on a tangent for 30 minutes, then tells us all we are going to be failures at life and school, He doesn't teach the material correctly. DO NOT TAKE!
Professor Chamusco is not a good teacher. He took forever to post grades online. He was average at best at explaining the concepts he was talking about. However, he was always nice and respectful to everyone in the class. If you want to pass, get ready to study a lot on your own, and go in for office hours.
Be ready to work! If you want to learn and understand chemistry take him. Office hours are always helpful. He will explain and make sure you understand if you've asked something to explain him during his office hours. Make sure you have to work for better grade. i clicker questions are extra credits. You can end up with more than 100 in the tests.
30 minute tangents in class (I timed a few of them). Random lab partners His hand outs are stolen from other professors. The entire course is terribly unorganized. 19 days to grade second exam. He doesn't grade the majority of the work until the end of the semester. You never know where you grade stands. This class is 90% self teach. DO. NOT. TAKE.
you better get ready to study a ton by yourself.
If you don't study with time & decide to procrastinate you're going to do poorly. During class, he goes off topic but I promise if you go to his office hours, he WILL help you out a lot. He really does care for you to understand the material. He gives a ton of extra credit at the end of the semester. Exams are HARD but you can get more than 100%!
I am a straight A student and can understand topics if explained to me, but I currently have a C in his class. Class ave on the first test was a 48%. He does not use slides and I often leave class with less than a page of notes. It is hard to study at home and you have to go to office hours for everything. Large assignments due day before tests.
I wish he was rated higher. This is a very hard class and I think a lot of students do poorly and blame the professor. You can't just sit in on lecture and do well in a course like this. That being said he is passionate about the topic and does everything to make sure you do well, as long as you do your part outside class. Don't sleep on CHM 2046.
Very hard class, amazing professor. Teaches the important concepts and does a great job of tying in the practicality for those truly interested in the topic. You will have to study on your own if you want to do well, but this is college, and a tough class at that, so this should not be a surprise. Come motivated to learn and you will do great!
Buy the ACS review book to learn the topics through the semester. Go to office hours to complete labs. Go to class just for the bonus he will give - it took me up a letter grade in the end. Otherwise, the class is pretty self-taught. It's normal to have a 50-60% in the class most of the semester.
Whatever you do DO NOT DROP Chamusco's class. It was the middle of the semester and I had a 38% F in his class but it was my last semester at SF so I refused to drop. I talked to him and was given two options: drop the course or go to office hours. I chose the latter and honestly that was the most intense but rewarding C I've gotten in college.
Starting this semester he did online exams in the testing center. You doing well on the exam is purely by luck because the question bank has a lot of questions to choose from. Go to office hours if you want to learn - class lectures are almost pointless, and watch the Organic Chemistry Tutor on youtube to learn what he attempts to teach in class.
indubitably!!
Best professor I've ever had by far. i've always struggled in chem but he explains all the reasons behind everything and made it very understandable. ive never gotten above a C+ in chem and got an A in this class
Do not take any classes with this professor. Not a good teacher, instead of teacher he gets side tracked and tells irrelevant stories. His test are HARD and the material isnt covered in class. He is not understanding! TERRIBLE TEACHER.
This is a warning, to any Santa Fe student in need of the a Chem 1 or any chemistry credit that this man offers. I can not stress this enough, do not take this man. You will end up teaching yourself the entire course, he does not teach, he "guides" (his words). Dont take this class, save yourself. It's too late for me.
I had Chamusco for intro & Chem 2 & I got an A in both. I took Chem 1 with a different professor & i struggled to get a B in that class. He may ramble on about random things, but he will teach you everything that will be on the exam. Each of his exams are cumulative, so it helps for when you get to the final. A TON of Extra credit.
He's a great person but has backbone, tests are cumulative but there's a good amount of extra credit, make sure you go into his office hours, he's very nice and explains in detail. he may bark sometimes but he's no bite :)
Does not care at all for his students, has an attitude, and goes off on tangents on a regular basis. Absolutely the WORST professor I've had my entire college career. He hands out extra credit like Oprah to make up for his inability to teach. It's the only thing that makes his class passable. Oh, and he wont respond to your emails. Good luck!
Chemistry sucks but Professor Chamusco does a great job at breaking things down as easily as possible. He is very passionate about chem which causes him to go off on a lot of tangents. He offers a lot of extra credit and is very accommodating when students are struggling. Go to office hours!!! He loves helping and will give you all the time needed!
Professor Chamusco is a good professor and very helpful in office hour. His exams are a bit hard. However, study the textbook and you should be fine. Textbook is helpful in exam. Make sure to study his handouts because he ask those questions in exam. He does exam review, has good amount of office hours, and give +100 points extra credit! Take him!!
Do not take any class that this professor teaches. The tests are extremely hard. Labs are complicated. I only go to class because of the extra credit quizzes at the beginning. The only homework is on ALEKS. Does not lecture. Doesnt help when you ask questions. Tests are not based off of the homework. Must go to office hours to actually be taught.
This was the hardest class Ive ever taken in my life, including nursing school. I studied for easily 60+ hours a week and still got abysmal grades in this class because of how hard he grades. With COVID he took any possible advantage away from the students (redoing wrong test questions for partial credit) and made everything much more difficult.
Labs that are to handed in are not clear, most people have to guess on what he wants. There is a plethora of other reasons for the bad rating, (frequently has questions on test I've never seen before in my life, has an attitude, goes in tangents..) but he is by far, the worst professor I've ever had the misfortune of "learning" from.
This guy does not teach. Be prepared to teach yourself everything. Now given he is very smart and knows a lot about chemistry but there are no power points, and lectures alone are not sufficient. Tests are extremely hard average was never more than a 65
Hes okay. You MUST try if you want to do well. He does offer a ton of extra points so do not get lazy. Every point matters. Errors with test questions on multiple exams. Definitely professors id take before him.
Not structured lectures. If you answer a question wrong in class he will blame it on you instead of explaining. When you ask a question, instead of answering he will just ask you another question. Labs are long and the reports are confusing. Tests are very hard since it is different from ALEKS homework. He will go past lecture time.
Goes past lecture time, rambles. By the end of the semester people would just walk out. Test has nothing to do with what he teaches. he does provide a lot of bonus doubtly you'll even receive them due to the fact he purposefully puts questions that don't even have the right answer. ONLY time you'll learn will be Aleks and after hours. Dont do it.
Mr. Chamusco wasn't horrible, but his way of grading is off the charts. It's difficult to understand what kind of a grade you actually have throughout the semester which adds to the stress of taking chem in general. He tends to get off topic though when he is talking about chem he seems to know what he's talking about. Office hours are helpful.
Will go on tangents for the first half of the semester and wont start teaching until around 10 students drop the class. Will never actually teach you anything you need to know for a quiz or test, just basic chem stuff like bonding and polarity but the test contains much more than just that. He will think your always catching an attitude with him.
Although I ended up with a good grade it was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken simply because he goes on tangents about completely unrelated topics in class. I taught myself using Youtube for 75% of the semester. He does give a lot of extra credit opportunities. Go to class/do ALEKS/turn in your lab notebook.
Definitely a challenging course. Lectures are disorganized, but the Prof has tons of office hours and is more than happy to take the time to help on any material. Very passionate and enthusiastic. Not great with canvas/tech in general. If you put in the effort, this professor will make it worth your while.
Office hours are a must if you want an A in the class, so be prepared to spend a lot of time there. Assignment instructions can be unclear but he always tries to help. He truly wants you to succeed, you just have to put in the work. Over one hundred points of extra credit available. Exams are tough. NOT an easy A. Read the textbook!
Probably the best professor I had who teaches great and is also passionate about chemistry. He gives insane amounts of extra credit to do. I had a 46 and a 51 on my first two tests and still got an A+. He also drops your lowest grade. Homework is on ALEKS which is super easy. This professor made me want to learn chemistry and pass with an A+.
Excellent professor! He is a very tough grader but if you work hard and attend office hours you will know how he prefers things and your scores for assignments will go up. Office hours is a must if you truly want to learn the material. He has plenty of office hours and is very patient with making sure one grasps the material they need help with.
I took this class over the summer, so it was extremely condensed. But I would 100% recomend taking it with Professor Chamusco. He can be intimidating at times, but if you are willing to work and try your hardest it will be worth it. The exams are difficult but do-able if you study the quiz questions. He is a VERY knowledgeable guy! Ask questions!
Took chem 2 over the summer with Dr Chamusco and got an A. I must say it's a mixed bag. He's a great guy personally who's extremely knowledgable, but his lectures are seldom helpful. His office hours are tremendously helpful tho and I learned more there. He gives SO MUCH extra credit. I did the math and it was like over 200 points of extra credit.
I would advise against taking his class in a short summer semester because there are tests every other week and everything is jam packed. Reading the textbook is also a really good idea because his lectures usually never completely cover the material. He offers a ton of extra credit during the semester and doing it will really help you in the end.
Professor Chamusco was amazing. Difficult class for sure, but the way he teaches is really fantastic. I've never had information stick in my head so well! He gives quite a bit of challenging work, but he's always willing to help and guide you in the right direction. Tests are hard but fair if you paid attention in class and did your work.
You need to teach yourself all of the material in order to pass this class. Each class there are iClicker quizzes but they go toward extra credit. There are lots of extra credit opportunities that was the only reason I passed because otherwise his class was stressful and time consuming.
Lectures are kind of helpful. I learned most of the material during office hours. He broke down all the tough questions during help sessions. Extra credit brought my grade from a C to B+. There are quizzes before test. Quiz questions will be on test. Key to passing is talk to classmates and work on quiz problems together or in office hours.
Rambles in class but if you actually listen he makes memorable connections that help you integrate the content. Go to all of his office hours, he's very personable and helpful/patient. Do every single xtra credit. I enjoyed his class thoroughly, and found him a humorous guy. He is not a straightforward lecturer, and enjoys participation. (Fun Labs)
TAKE THIS PROF. I ended with a 106. He is not bad at all. If you don't feel strong in chemistry he is the perf prof. to take this class with. LOTS of extra credit. he does use ALEKS every 2 weeks w 10-17 topics (of all the info u need for each test). Learned material through ALEKS and went to him in office hours which he has a lot of to clarfiy Qs.
He goes on tangents and makes inappropriate comments/assumptions constantly. I had one lecture and lab with him today and switched classes. If you do not want to listen to a man voice his un-called-for opinions, do not take this class!
This guy is flat out awful. I believe i speak for most of the class by saying his course is straight up miserable. Horribly organized and he'll ramble on about the most unrelated topics, then extend class past our scheduled time. Save yourself and take any other professor. This guy makes me want to rip my hair out. Don't do it!
Prof. Chamusco was a nice teacher and had a decent class. His lectures were rarely on track but he always delivered the information he needed. His tests are hard but he offers SO much extra credit, most of it is available only IN CLASS. If you go to lectures, do the i-clicker, do ALEKS, and complete your labs, you will pass with a good grade.
I didn't like Chamusco at first, but after getting to know him, he's actually a really nice and supportive guy and really does want you to succeed. He does go on tangents a lot during lab and lectures (which can be frustrating) but he means well. You HAVE to study for this class. No way around it. Gives tons of extra credit though.
Dr Chamusco was not the best at first, and I honestly disliked his teaching style. Over time however I will say there is kind of a method to his madness and overall enjoyed his lectures. His tangents are often meaningful despite being a bit off track sometimes. Despite all his flaws he really does care and had a passion for his craft. Overall good!
Mr. Chamsuco was easily the worst teacher I have ever had so far. He says he prides himself on student engagement in class, but when I answered a lecture questions incorrectly, he pointed and yelled at me and threatened to take 50 points off my next test for getting it wrong. That was uncalled for and highly inappropriate for a teacher to do.
Chamusco's lectures can seem disorganized. He will tell stories and explain the reasoning behind things often, which can cut into the time meant to cover topics. To be successful in his class you must go to his office hours and ask questions. He gives an absurd amount of extra credit (over 20% easily). His class was extremely fun.
Professor Chamusco understands the material very well and is great at explaining. He champions critical thinking, and that is the KEY to getting through this class. His Office Hours are great as well. If you adapt to his class structure, pay full attention in lectures, and take advantage of Office Hours and the Learning Commons, you will succeed.
This class was one of the hardest I've taken at Santa Fe. Professor Chamusco is a nice guy but be prepared to go to his office hours and the learning commons for help. Reading the text book can help for tests but I mostly had to rely on ALEKS to teach me the material. I would choose a different professor for intro to chem if I could go back.
I don't have enough space to write but save yourself and do not take him. His lectures are random tangents, he wants so much detail but is not specific, I went into office hours and for a couple hours for three days he had me working o stuff that wasn't on the quiz or test. The average is horrible. Don't be fooled by the extra credit.
He grades tough and your average will be low until the end of the semester but he gives TONS of extra credit. He has tons of office hours, which is good because this is where a lot of your learning will happen. His lectures have a tendency to go off on tangents. The short story is he cares and gives you opportunities to succeed, you should take him
Class is challenging but lots of extra credit. Go to office hours. Quizzes before tests so study the quizzes to prepare for the tests. No powerpoints just does questions from worksheets he posts on Canvas. Your grade will look bad for over half of the semester because he doesn't grade until the end but your grade will go up a lot. Would take again
Terrible. Some student created a massive texting group. Everyone was confused (15+ students) and he is so unapproachable. Disorganized class. Sad to think he has taught this class for so long and is so ineffective. Almost like he hates his job.I get it. Go do something else man.
Extremely difficult class. The class by nature is already rather difficult but the set up in which he taught felt more overwhelming. Typical module is 2 weeks of ALEKS (25-35 modules) then 1 week consisting of a quiz (mon-tues) and exam (wed-thurs). Take no other classes or only 1-2 other easy classes. This class will eat 25 hrs a week at least.
Horrible. Do not take. Rants about unnecessary things instead of teach. Does not go over things we need to know for tests. Only really teaches during office hours but not everyone has the availability to sit for two hours to get one question answered
His class is very forgiving, but the ONLY way to do well in his class is to attend office hours and ask him a lot of questions. It is frustrating being in his class because frequently he will spend all of class going over two iclcker problems. If you have the Green ACS book use it to learn and study for tests. A lot of EC but it won't feel that way
Although I failed the first three big exams, I was able to get an A in the class with the extra-credit. Most people barely pass the labs. If you want an easy A class, take Chamusco. Most people get B+ and As although the exam and lab grades are non-passing scores. If you need to know chemistry, however, probably go to another College.
Goes off on random tangents. 5 tests (lowest replaced by final), 5 lab reports. About a letter grades worth of extra credit given (not easy btw they take time). strict in lab. Test averages ranged from 40-60 percent. Overall, if you have to take higher level chem classes/other really difficult courses, this prof will condition you well for it.
Professor Chamusco can be a bit unorthodox, but if you engage with his teaching approach, you'll learn a lot. Definitely utilize unstuck study, the Learning Commons, and office hours to succeed in this challenging yet rewarding class.
------------------------
Larry cares but he is unorganized. I would look at all your options before choosing this professor. Also, do your pre labs. His policy for starting lab is silly and needs to be reworked. I understand the discipline aspect but completing your prelab ahead of time can set you back if most of the class didn't complete it.
Please listen to me when I say do NOT take this professor. He is the worst professor/teacher I have ever had in my entire life. He doesn't even teach and goes on tangents for no reason. He is never clear on what the tests will be on and you will have to teach yourself a lot.
Not a mean or bad guy by any means, but his classes are rough. Hate to hate on him as he's a nice professor that I really enjoyed talking to, but he doesn't teach the material, and yes all the other reviews are not BS, he goes on ridiculous tangents. I never leave reviews, but I am leaving this one to let people know that his class is not the one.
Professor Chamusco is one of the best professors that I have ever had!! His class was tough but def doable and worth the effort if you apply yourself! You can get an A!! Go to his office hours and you will learn so much. I really enjoyed his class.
Professor Chamusco is a solid teacher! He is super helpful during office hours and gives a lot of extra credit. Participation really matters to him, so make sure to show up to every class. Although he does tend to rant during his lectures, he does break down the topics very well and makes it clear what will be on the test and the labs.
This is the first time I rate a professor but he deserves it! I had to drop this class because Professor Chamusco was extremely disrespectful every time I would ask for help (mind you this was the first lab). He lacks pedagogy as a professor which is important to engage with students, but he rather be condescending than help you. DO NOT TAKE HIM
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He asks you the test questions that he didn't explain in class. You have an iClicker test the first few minutes of the class, so if you're late, the points are gone for you. Sometimes he ask you questions on the iclicker, which he will explain in the class so you will lose the points cuz how would you know how to answer.
Very nice guy, but does not communicate what will be on the test. He will start the class with an iClicker quiz and only do that for the whole lecture. The aleks hw is bad, it usually ranges from 20 to 26 topics, 3 questions per topic if youre lucky enough. On top of that, he also does graded homework and lap reports every other week.
Extremely disorganized, constant rambling during lectures. Can't properly use Canvas to save his life. Unclear grading criteria, no slideshows for lectures. He can't answer even the most straightforward questions. You have no idea how you're doing in the class because everyone has a failing grade in Canvas, though he claims it is Canvas's fault.
love/hate relationship-Love his attitude, humor, enthusiasm, lectures, his little tricks/tips that help you so much if you listen. Hate his canvas set up, the confusion about how/when to upload labs, the minimal wiggle room. If you're just trying to take chem to check it off, he's not it. If your major relates to chem and you care, hes amazing.
extremely difficult to get an A, but he is still undeniably a good professor
Review chm 1 tests/ACS early asap. Get chm 2 syllabus early (ask chm 2 profs, email) & lightly read & track ACS chem 2 portion per syllabus (SQ focus). Avoid more than 2 course schedule, make time for his & others office hours. Prof gets off topic alot, needs to shorten metaphors; but solid guy! Does best to teach hard chm Extra credit & TEST heavy
Extremely disorganized, unclear, and tough grader. Unable to be helpful or answer simple questions. You will have a failing grade in canvas all semester and have no idea if you're doing well or not until the very last week. Awful class for my mental health, caused me so much unnecessary stress. The content isn't even hard, he just makes it hard.
Save yourself the stress and don't take his course, you'll wish you listened to the bad ratings.
I had him for summer so it was very hear with tests every two weeks and learning material FAST. I failed almost (50's/60's) every test and managed an A with the extra credit he gives. He's an ok teacher and relies on office hours and review days. Focuses on understanding concepts and isn't straight to point. He's a nice guy. Attendance required
Larry is the goat. At first you might not like him, just like i did, but in reality he CARES about YOU. He teaches you not just for this class but for the future. Best Chemistry teacher i took so far. He is a tough grader; be ready to work your ass off, but it is worth it. If you're taking something related to chem, take him without hesitation!!
I love Professor Chamusco so much! Chemistry was never my strongest subject, but the way this professor explains things really clicks. Even though he is a tough grader (like pretty tough grader), the tests are soooo easy. Even though there is no clear or organized lecture, all what you have to do is the ALEKS and u will be fine for the test.
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE DO NOT TAKE. he doesn't teach anything you have to teach everything yourself even though attendance is graded. 50 online hw a week, yaps the entire class abt bs goes 20 mins over class every. he does not gaf about us and expects chem to be ur entire life. makes things due at random times and posts day of. wont email, no contact
At the beginning he will seem like a tough guy and hard to get along with, don't read too much into the bad reviews on here. He cares about his students and wants to ensure that each of them will succeed, he has an odd way of lecturing sometimes but, if you take in the information and actually talk through difficulties with him, he can be great.
Honestly a bad professor and a bad person. Told me i never know when to keep my mouth shut to my face, very unprofessional person. Doesnt care if you have family or medical issues. Grading is very unclear. Gives you insane amount of hw only to say its like 10% of your grade.lectures are a waste of time, good luck teaching urself.would rate 0.
If you want stories, this is the class. If you want chemistry, not so much. Lectures are long personal anecdotes and random facts, with nonstop iClicker and points disappearing fast. Quizzes feel like riddles instead of questions. You don't really choose this professor—you end up with him after the good ones are gone.
