Reeeeeeeeally knows his ****. Intense simulation of Senate staff work involved.
LARRY IS THE MAN
LARRY RULES!!!
One of the best W&M Profs. You must take his class.
First of all, VERY knowledgable about Congress and policy making, one of the most intelligent professors I've had. That said, he's incredibly arrogant and has several habits that will get on your last nerve by the end of the semester.
VERY knowledgable, very helpful. Only take it if you REALLY like government though because its a lot of reading and work.
funny man, knows material well, good at teaching it... available outside of class and you're expected to see him about papers to make sure it goes well
Cool guy, but a lot of work. Papers are not graded too harshly, but an insane amount of reading.
Smart guy, real world knowledgable too. Interesting but very arrogant. Pretty intense work load. Sporatic grader on papers. Theres his good side and his bad side, and this can definately effect your grade. Participation helps. Whats up with his shirts?
Knows his stuff, and talks about endlessly; entertaining classes. Insane amouunt of reading: 6 books, all needed for the final exam, and rediculously difficult final paper. Easy grader, will work with you until you get it, good sense of humor.
Lots of reading that perhaps was not really needed. Really interesting class and presents the information very clearly. 6 books for a freshman seminar, way harder than most other seminars, but highly enjoyable
Great teacher, lots of reading, you will learn tons from him. true on the arrogant charge, but he does know his stuff.
evans is one of my favorite profs from william and mary. he is really helpful, great in class, and will give you great advice related to your education.
He teaches a fast-paced class. Good sense of dry humor often mistaken for arrogance. Grades fairly. Good lectures with anecdotes, won't put you to sleep if you like government/Congress.
I enjoyed it.
One of the best professors at W&M- is interesting, intelligent, respected in his field and very knowledgeable, yet down to earth and concerned with helping students succeed.
A great lecturer with lots of great relevant stories. A very nice professor who cares about his students. HOWEVER, his tests always end up being fairly random, so you totally have to read everything.
Completely one of those Chris Matthews, inside the Beltway, know-it-all types. Arrogant. That said, extremely entertaining and fun! No nonsense style that keeps you awake. Simulation is fun. I agree that tests are very random, though, so you better have read everything.
I had this at 9a, and the fact that I stayed wide awake every day... whoa. Very interesting. I did get a C- on the midterm: READ. Not an easy A, but you'll learn TONS. Extremely nice guy, but he is arrogant. The brilliant professors always are. He is one of the smartest at WM. Take and read.
EVANS IS AN ANIMAL. A supremely interesting class, and, like someone said, Evans has a tongue in cheek manner of talking that some might see as arrogance or abrasiveness, but those people aren't very smart. Awesome guy, fair grader.
Very arrogant but interesting individual. Not a lot of substance to the class other than his regaling students with stories from his glory days on the Hill and dropping names every two seconds.
Cool guy, TOUGH CLASS. Course consists of 5 studies of APD in different aspects; DENSE books. Research paper was a killer 15-20 pager with not a lot to write on, but he was helpful and supportive throughout. One of the nicest guys i've ever met.
Extraordinarily nice guy. You can joke around with him. Very helpful and easy to access. Will put a lot of effort into helping you. Knows subject material very well. You will learn a LOT. However be prepared for lots of reading.
Two Words: whip counts. Seriously, this class was a lot of work, but he's not too tough a grader, is very helpful outside of class, and really knows his stuff, so it's worth it if you want to be a gov major. If not, stay away.
Learned alot. INSANE READING. 6 books, all over 200 pages, and here is the kicker, you actually NEED to read ALL of them for the final. final paper was painful, two words- whip counts. final exam was fair, study in groups and hit the highlights of all the books, it really pays off. he drinks coffee every class out of the smallest cups ive ever seen
Evans is great professor- He's tons of fun. He told lots of stories from his days on the hill and he dropped names ever 2 seconds. Problem is that he has a pretty crazy schedule, so he'll cancel class sometimes and we'll be behind, so make sure you really discipline yourself to do all the readings b/c eventually everyone falls behind.
Plays favorites. Not the easiest grader, but if you visit him and let him ramble at you for an hour you'll do well. Gets interesting guest lecturers. No need to participate since he never shuts up in class. Heavy institutional and procedural focus. One of the few moderate to conservative profs. Very forgetful.
Evans is a great professor. His lectures are pretty much off topic, but between the reading and his examples, you'll learn a ton. He's extremely helpful and intelligent, though fairly forgetful. Midterm is difficult. You must do all of the readings to do well in this class.
Interesting class, good guest lectures. Evans also allows for discussion and argument in the class. He also doesn't assign long writing assignments. However, DO THE ASSIGNED READING. You will fail the midterm otherwise.
Funny, smart, quick, one of the nicest professors at the school. Lectures are not on the reading, just related. It makes class more interesting, but passing tests harder. So do the reading and don't fall behind. Though you most likely will fall behind.
Evans is exactly what you would think a college professor should be. He is very passionate about what he teaches, although at times way to academic in his thinking. He is someone that every government major should take at least one class with. He is a great professor overall but he is over-rated, you do not learn as much as other GOVT courses.
Right now I am looking at all the past posts and wish I saw them before I took the class. They are DEAD on! I felt my brain swelling everyday as I would see Evans attempt to sip from his tiny cup but never quite get there. Loves to call himself a moderate.FALSE. If you really wanna know take the class and while your there say hi to Skowronek for me
Prof. Evans is really dedicated to what he teaches and he's very knowledgeable about the political process. Funny from time to time. He also has a lot of Washington connections that he uses to bring in speakers. You have to do the readings (6 books, all over 200pp) because there is a final, but the grading is relatively easy. Def. speak up in class
Professor Evans is an amazing Professor in every way. He's passionate, funny, and super sweet. He makes the tests so only the hard-workers will get As. Create a study guide as a class because chances are you won't get through all the readings yourself. Talk to him about your paper (even if you aren't sure bout your topic)- he's so helpful.
DO THE READINGS!!! Other than that this class is awesome! He is very well connected in Washington and is more informed than almost any other prof @ WM. Exams are all essay/short answer based and the come straight from class discussions and readings. Class is lots of fun with open discussion, but he will make fun of you.
This class is extremely reading intensive. However, he usually tells you what you should read in class. All of our readings were online, so he saves you a ton of money. Very knowledgeable and an entertaining lecturer. Knows a lot of interesting stories about D.C. and you will learn a ton.
Public Policy with Evans was interesting, in that he talked a lot about current events (basically all about Health Care reform). But you will learn little about public policy in general, and he is very vague with lectures. Exams don't really test your knowledge of public policy, but instead test minute details of the readings. Take at your own risk
A-student telling you NOT to take this class. Cool guy but you will not learn anything, let alone anything about the Legislative Process. Unclear about what he wants on exams and will pick out specific tidbits from over 1,000 pages of reading for impossible questions. Too much reading, disjointed lectures, and overall just a terrible class.
You actually learn a lot in the class, but you would never know from the structure of his tests... NOTHING to do with the themes of the course. Final was 4 IDs from over a thousand pages of reading. Ridiculous? I think so. Do not take if you even remotely care about your GPA. Nice guy, very smart, but completely ineffective as a professor.
Awesome professor. Has a unique and practical approach to politics and tells great stories. His tests are designed to see if you've done the reading, which there is quite a bit of. Hard to get an A if you don't keep up, but otherwise he's not a harsh grader.
I think whether or not you enjoy his class depends on the teaching style you lie. Evans is very free-form; he uses a lot of examples and personal anecdotes to make points. If you're looking for someone really straightforward, he's probably not your guy. But if you want someone who will definitely try to engage you, I recommend him.
Smart, funny, and makes an effort to balance his teaching with the workload of students. His midterms and finals can be tough if you don't attend for the lectures and do all the readings, but if you take good notes and like the subject, you should do fine.
Professor Evans keeps the lectures interesting by sprinkling in anecdotes from his professional life. He cares about students and understands their academic pressures, and if you ask him for career advice he can be extremely helpful. The course material is easy, and his tests are balanced between readings/lecture. Congressional simulation was fun!
Evans is a funny and engaging lecturer. Readings can get dry at times, but there isn't too much to do relative to other govt classes. His lectures make topics much more interesting and incorporate anecdotes and stories from his time working in Congress. Exams aren't difficult, just do the reading. Great teacher who knows what he's talking about.
Prof. Evans is FABULOUS. He's one of those professors who mostly just stands at the lectern and talks (often with, say, a chart in the background), but fully keeps your attention. Very funny and engaging. But more importantly, he really knows his stuff after actually working on Capitol Hill. LOVED his class.
GREAT! He really knows a lot and doesn't name drop. NO BOOKS! Great smile. <3
Evans is the best. He's incredibly knowledgeable, laid back and straightforward. He also makes sure that his class has practical implications for beyond college (like assigning everyone to write concise, 2-page memos instead of uselessly long term papers). And, he's just an all-around cool and funny character to boot.
Take his class. I'm telling you to do it. He's very knowledgeable and intelligent; even a bit intimidating sometimes. But you will get so much out of his class. There is work involved, but not an overwhelming amount. It only gets heavy near the end of the semester.
Evans is awesome. First 930 class ive taken that was actually worth getting up for, and probably the best class I've taken at WM. You have to go to class but its totally worth it.
Professor Evans is a great professor. The lectures are always interesting and the campaign commercial and committee simulation assignments are really interesting. One thing to note; there are a ton of readings so make sure to keep up with the class or you will regret it come exam time. Highly recommend!
First time Negotiation has been offered as a Gov. course. Material was interesting but the class lost structure as the semester went on. Evans is a funny/engaging/informative/helpful/etc. lecturer and papers and exams weren't graded harshly. Worth taking :)
I've had Evans for four classes now; he is great. If you don't pay attention in class, make a study guide of all the readings with your friends before tests. They aren't too bad as long as you know all they key terms from the readings. If you email him drafts of essays, he will help you out usually. Plus, his hair is really poofy and he's cool.
Evans is really great. He's consistently engaging, funny and makes any topic seem interesting. His assignments/exams were relatively creative and not especially difficult. He used the textbook for Negotiation a lot, but went out of his way to include practical examples. If you like politics, you should take one of his classes.
If Dr. Evans didn't choose to be such an engaging professor, he could probably be an actor. He has an old-fashioned cool factor, and he consistently amps up course subjects that could otherwise be bland. Incredibly informative and clear. He chooses articles and book pieces as the readings because he dislikes existing textbooks. Take his class!
Professor Evans is awesome. His grading is clear and specific. He is very helpful. He will help you even the day before a paper is due. He is also flexible. His lectures are funny and I felt like I actually learned something new every day. The reading is good to do but probably not 100% necessary
Engaging lecturer who uses the first 30 minutes of class to relate current policy issues to the class material. Very helpful during office hours in terms of formatting and outlining the memo. Lots of reading during the first half of class that applies to the in-class and take-home final. Made potentially dry material interesting.
I have taken several classes with Evans and I really like him. I did not enjoy the structure of this class. There was too much material and complex ideas were glossed over. DO NOT FALL FOR THE MATH IS EASY SMOKESCREEN. Non-math people are bad at math because of how it corresponds to the concepts. Yes, I can add. Take with caution. I struggled.
One of the most engaging and smart professors I've ever had, Professor Evans is extremely charismatic and an amazing lecturer. He's also not afraid to call you out for being dumb, so don't. Tests are challenging because they're both short and cover lots of material, but do the readings and you'll be fine. Again: DO THE READINGS.
Professor Evans is funny and extremely understanding towards his students! This class is not for someone who needs a ton of structure (lectures can feel haphazard and notes are often disorganized) but the book is SUPER helpful so read it the second you get lost. The paper is long but super interesting and Evans was happy to help outside of class
Professor Evans is so passionate about what he's teaching that it's difficult to not catch his passion. He doesn't just lecture on the readings; he brings what we're talking about into current events and what's happening right now, and makes connections that make the material relevant for everyone. It's A LOT of reading, but worth it.
Professor Evans is an awesome lecturer with a good sense of humor. He's a realist and understands student life, so he understands if you miss a few classes or don't complete all the readings on time. He's extremely knowledgeable.
In most part the course is not well-organized. He gave little amount of explanation on the takeaway point in the textbook, and spent lots of time for plain stuffs on which we don't need extra comment. We had a 15-page paper, but the grading criteria is lax and I have no idea why my paper got A- despite the poor quality.
He's a really smart guy and you'll learn stuff about Game Theory. It'll even change the way you look at some things. However, the class was not very organized. There was a midterm, a paper, and a final. He did not clearly give expectations for the paper or final. Grading was also vague.
Dr. Evans has a very unstructured class. I often left lectures confused about what I should've learned. I was also upset that he spent so much time talking about current events rather than course material. The readings help give clarity, though, and he brings in outside speakers. I would say take his class pass/fail, mostly to go along for the ride
His lectures were good but sometimes boring. Midterm & final: IDs & Essay which is why MUST read. IDs are really specific & some are randomly drawn from any one of the readings & are worth so much. Paper is straightforward & he grades fair. He's a very accessible, nice, and well seasoned prof. If you need help see him. Work smart & you'll be good
this guy is the GOAT! Highly recommend taking any of his classes if possible. I took both his Presidency course and Legislative Process class. Very approachable at office hours and never fails to be engaging during his lectures.
Every class with Professor Evans is kind of like his presidential race/ impeachment stand-up routine. He's pretty funny, the class is fairly current events heavy, it will help you to read the news before going to class. Lots of readings, most were relevant and interesting but fair warning, you will read a lot. All in all, would recommend.
He is such a gem. He didn't always stick to the readings when he lectured because we talked about impeachment legit every day, but I didn't mind. He's so funny and so so smart and I would really recommend you take a class with him just to experience it. Tests and papers were not too bad either.
Evans is hilarious which makes his lectures pretty engaging, although I sometimes left the class confused what the lecture was actually about. The Presidency was centered around current events; connecting the news to the themes was harder. LOTS of reading but usually helpful. His expectations could be confusing but he's not too tough on students.
Professor Evans is an extremely well-respected member of the political science forum, and his expertise was on fully display during the Congress and the President seminar. Extremely entertaining lectures, and while the class is long, it flew by. Brought in authors on Zoom and in person to provide an extra level to the coursework.
Professor Evans is super knowledgeable and articulate in class, and uses his knowledge to explain the themes of the course in a very approachable way. He routinely works to bring in new material in order to contextualize current events and illustrate the readings in a practical sense. Evans also brings in outside speakers and does online class well
My main complaint with the class is that we spent way more time talking about the news than the readings, and then the exam questions were very specific to the readings. I thought the exam questions were pretty hard, but it seems like he didn't grade them too harshly at least. We had tons of interesting guest speakers, including Jim Comey.
Larry Evans is a quality professor. He's passionate about the subject and has Capitol Hill experience. There are 3 textbook, 2 of which he authors. These readings are CRUCIAL to your success in the class. Luckily, the most important textbook isn't too dry. Fun campaign project & congressmember simulation as well. Midterm & final were 10-14pgs each.
Evans is my favorite at this school. He can always contextualize your learning with current events, and his senior seminar during covid involved reading the best books in the literature and critically discussing them with the authors who wrote them. Evans is happy to help students who need it, but his classes are also pretty reading heavy.
Larry is the goat. Assigns a good amount of reading, but he's super witty and the classes are engaging. Recommend for sure
Evans is very passionate about teaching. He's certainly an expert in this as he can address very detailed and specific questions we ask. After this course, I feel I understand much more about Congressional process. The reading is a bit heavy (sometimes 80 pages before class), but he illustrates the important points during class.
SO MUCH READING. Sometimes upwards of 100 pages before each class. You have to do it too because the tests are only about the readings. Class time is spent talking about current events on the hill. He is a nice guy but the reading takes over your life.
Prof Evans knows congress in & out. In LP, there is a midterm & final exam (he gives u essay topics in advance). There are 2 group projects that are a big deal. Only opened the textbooks for the exams. Make a group & divide the study work & it's an easy class. He is a bit dull when it comes to lecturing. Attendance isn't req. besides project days.
The class wasn't bad, I wouldn't take him again. His assignments aren't straightforward, but he's flexible. He spends very little time talking about the class readings assigned for the day, he hops around with what readings he talks about, if he talks about them at all. He still heavily relies on the readings for the papers, tests, etc.
I love Prof Evans! He is absolutely hilarious and extremely knowledgeable about American politics. He is nonchalant and easy-going. Do the readings (which are interesting) and the assignments won't be difficult at all. You will come out of his class with a deep understanding of the U.S. presidency.
Lectures were really engaging, but left classes confused with the main takeaways because we would focus a lot on current events and less on the readings. His grading structure on participation was confusing, but overall, he was a great professor to get insight from.
If you want to do well on the exams do EVERY SINGLE READING and go to class. The exams and paper were tough but he graded them fairly. However, he assigned an additional project and paper that was not on the syllabus. He is passionate about Congress so he spent a lot of time discussing it rather than the president. But his lectures are engaging!
Professor Evans is an interesting guy, he is super passionate and knowledgeable but can be a bit sassy. He encouraged participation but would be snappy and rude in response. The exams are difficult to study for, and you never really know what material actually matters but as long as you try you get at least a B.
I have taken several classes with Evans, and I am not disappointed. His big-picture, loose lecture style, which often draws upon narrative and current events, may be messy or unorganized to some, but he truly gives you a feel for Congress and what matters.
I'm not sure any college student ever has enough time to do all the reading he assigns. The group projects were interesting but seemingly pointless. He rambles during class about current events which can be interesting but does not add to the course content. He's accessible outside of class but his feedback on exams/projects is often unclear.
Prof Evans is funny, entertaining, and knowledgeable. Genuinely some of the most interesting lectures I've sat through. However, he has a very flippant attitude toward grades. It's invalidating and super frustrating knowing a professor isn't taking your performance/grade as seriously as you are. Participation matters but he won't learn your name.
Evans is hilarious, kind, accommodating, and insanely knowledgable. However, this class has a heftyyy amount of reading. And he goes over it, but there's so much so we don't really hit everything. And the midterm, final, and paper are all about the readings so you HAVE to read. I love him but I don't know that I loved his teaching style or class.
Despite his intimidating persona and the over-the-top reading, Prof Evans was a very fair grader. Exam questions were easier than expected. As long as you pay attention in class, go over his review questions, and get the gist of the readings, you should be able to do well. Accessible outside class. Great in office hours. Timely course themes.
Professor Evans was a hoot and kept each class interesting with his hilarious personality. The only issue I had was exams being solely on readings when what we went over in class was just him talking. It was interesting, but unpredictable. Exams were graded fairly though, and he is fun to listen to with his personal anecdotes and opinions.
Evans is funny and very very smart. The reading load is a lot, and we often were behind/unorganized, but grading was very fair. The exams were pretty doable, and the 15 page paper was actually a really interesting assignment. Would recommend! Just be prepared to put in a lot of time into this course.
Professor Evans is probably the funniest professor I have ever had. He is incredibly knowledgable and very entertaining. He does tend to get off topic, but it makes the class so much more fun. There is an insane amount of reading, but if you keep up with it it is not too bad. The class consists of a midterm, a 15 page paper, and a final.
Professor Evans is insanely knowledgeable and engaging, but bro gets so caught up in talking about current events that we don't even cover the material. As a result, 75% of the avg class is current events, and the exams are mostly readings material, which are pretty boring and long. However, if you skim them, the exam isn't hard at all. Solid class
Easily the funniest professor I've had at WM. Class was fairly reading intensive and somewhat disorganized. Assignments were interesting and not very challenging.
Professor Evans is a master at explaining the Legislative Process and its affairs. He is very witty and decently engaging. My only gripe is that he spends a lot of time in class talking more about current events rather than the readings but it's not too much of a big deal. Just skim through the readings and try not to fall behind. Great class!
The classes are nicely split between discussions on current politics and reading material. However, taking the time to follow the reading or cram before exams is necessary to do well. He is very passionate about teaching the class. Larry Evans adds his unique and tenured sense of humor to every class- one of my favorite professors.
Evans is an expert on Congress. Class included 2 fun simulations. You need to study well for exams, and don't fall behind on the readings. His lectures were 80% chatting about current events, which was interesting but I wish we spent more time on the material. Study using his review questions. He's hilarious; by no means a boring course.
Sharp, witty and entertaining. Clearly experienced and always willing to talk about the class or any topic of your choosing in office hours. Regarding the class, game theory is not easy, but it's not difficult, either. There's plenty of abstract reasoning that will throw you off at first, but practice is key. Fair exams, clear expectations.
