TOOOOOOOOOOO Punctual
Be on time, interesting class, funny
Get to class on time, mildly hard, but very funny and very entertaining in class.
Very punctual. Just get there on time!! it is worth taking his class at 7 in the morning. Tests are ok if you read and come to class, and his lectures are great.
Very hard. Never tells you what questions were going to be on the test. You had to read all ten chapters and know them well. Otherwise you would flunk the essay. By the way he wants the essays to fill the whole blue book.

A fun professor, but did not help me understand American Government anymore than my high school government teacher. He has a very laid back teaching style, and don't expect any direct answers to your question. He tends to skate around certain issues.
Loved this class. One of the best classes I have taken yet. Very fair teacher who presents both sides of politics well. He works for NBC on the side as a political analyst.
hes nice, but grades tough...as in d+ tough
Well-informed and occasionally interesting. He has a fragile ego and likes to humiliate latecomers. A bit of a bozo, he does find himself rather too funny. This class is trivial, just show up and read the book and you should absorb enough to pass.
Cool guy I guess. he's funny but i dont know about reading a book he wrote himself!
Grades hard on midterms. Study for quizes and you'll be ok. Entertaining
Definately must come to class and come on time. Intelligent and enthusiastic. Great poli sci teacher. You have to read the books. Will ask questions that were only presented in text.
hes is an excellent lecturer, but you better be on time and pay attention. Read the book and beware of the midterms. They are tough if you try to wing it, he will see right through you.
His class is fine except for midterm/final, which he grades extremely hard. Other than that, he keeps the class somewhat interesting.
Great teacher, His quiz's are easy if you come to class every day, He will grade his midterm really hard though.
Pay attention in his class, you will have to remember the week's lecture for the quizzes. Clear and helpful teacher. Beware the midterms, though.
Great instructor. It was a difficult course, however senior seminar is not supposed to be easy. 30 page paper was a requirement, but gave us topics we could be creative with. Take POLS 130 with him in spring, teaching it with SoCal Edison CEO Bob Foster. Great reference too!
All his classes are very hard but you learned a lot. You have to be in class on time and take all the notes, pay attention and study the test would not be diffucult. PR. Greston is an excellent lecturer and has great sense of humor.
He would do things like while handing back you midterm he would look at your grade and if you did badly he would make a screwed up face as he gave it to you, and if you did well he would make a comment along the lines of, "happy birthday" or "looks like you woke up on the right side of the bed".
don't take his class!!!
Grades extremely hard and unfairly. Course itself is very difficult. Weekly quizzes that are pretty difficult if you don't read (which you probably wont cause the book is so boring) On the blue book midterm and final, expects you to be VERY specific which is hard to do cause the course has so much information. Just stay away if you can, trust me.
He was a great teacher. People said he was really hard, and he is, but you just gotta study that much harder. The more you study and the more dedicated you are the better you will do. To do your absolute best ask him questions and show an interest in the class!! Be really dedicated and you should do great. He expects you to know your stuff well!!
I think he is great. I think the comment about "Happy Birthday" was to me and that is because it WAS my birthday so he was being nice. He is a really great man and very intelligent. His class is a little tough, but come on people, it is college. Is it supposed to be easy? Read the material!
midterm/final grading was way harsh....too obsessed with silence and punctuality.....i loved Underdal's half but hated Gerston's
EXTREMELY hard grader, and don't get to his class even 15 seconds late or he'll chew you out and kick you out for the day. I wouldn't take him again.
This guy should be a gameshow host or something (sit through a lecture of his and you'll know what I mean). Very clear and concise, a ton of reading as expected from a class like this. Overall, an effective professor. Oh, if you happen to get him at 7:30am, DO NOT BE LATE TO CLASS! He'll stop mid-lecture to hound you about it in front of everyone!

Really hard grader, but you can get on his good side if you read his books or watch him on the news (i don't know what that will get you though) Arrogant, likes talking about all of the book that he's written. REALLY HARD GRADER!!
He is a good teacher. Pay attention and show up to class on time. He does grade kind of hard so be sure to study for midterms and final. His quizzes are pretty easy though.
Extremely hard grader! but well worth the pain. Just show up to class on time, read and go to class and you should be okay!
Can be a hard grader, and likes to have absolute silence when he lectures. Most of his quizzes are very straightforward, right from lecture. Midterm comes from broad understanding of the text and lecture. Must incoporate both in Midterm and Final Exam essay.
Great teacher. His lectures are interesting and they keep u awake.
Definately a challenge. If you take good notes during lecture, the quizzes are do-able, even if you didn't do the reading. Make sure you have a good understanding of the reading by the time the midterm/final comes around though. You have to have a good broad understanding in order to write a good essay.
He's a political analyst for NBC 11 and KCBS 740!
lectures are extremely interesting and filled with current events and information. a pretty hefty amount of reading, with routine quizes once a week. they are piece-o-cake if you do the reading. midterm/final is an in class essay that is rather scary, but if you show off what you've learned you'll impress him just fine. genuinely great guy, too.
"Or suffer the consequences" Been there done that. He scares me. I left. Bye.
One of the best lecturers I have ever taken. His enthusiasm for the material makes the class enjoyable if you are at all interested in actually learning something about how the American political system works. Weekly quizzes force you to be on top of the readings. Midterms are worth a ton of your grade, so study hard for them.
Anyone who can make a class interesting at 7:30 in the morning is a good teacher in my book.
Good guy. Tough grader when it comes to midterms. Quizzes are easy; just read the text.
Definately knows what he's talking about, but still tends to lecture from the book. There's a short quiz every Wednesday and never be late, especially the first day, you'll see. But, overall very good professor!
Professor Gerston is a great lecturer. His lectures are easy to understand and he makes the class fun
Professor Gerston is a great lecturer; very animated. Uses many current day examples and is a great story teller. Took his class @ 7:30; each student had to be to class 5 minutes before it started. Midterms and finals are challeging, but you really do learn a lot. Class structure is lecture and tests. Because of him, I changed my major to polisci
His lecture are very clear and straight to the point. If you do the reading and take the quizes, the midterm and final should not be a problem. The California politics book that he had the class read for 15B was confusing and boring but it's doable. Don't expect a study guide for midterms and finals, just study everything!
Good lectures. Don't be late!
Wow, this guy loves to hear himself speak. He comes across as interesting, but is not. Often when asked a question , he will respond with an irrelevant answer and move on. Avoid him if you can.
This professor have major problems. His midterms and finals are in an essay format, so it is subjective to his discretion. He based his grades on how much he likes you as a student. I dropped his class half way because I can't stand his way of teaching. Avoid him if you can.
Very interesting class although Poli Sci is one of my weaker subjects. Professor Gerston makes the class lively and fun. He uses great current examples to connect with the big load of reading material. Our class talked about the 2008 Election. We had 3 tests all in Essay Format. Fair grader. Do the reading, take great solid notes and you'll be fine
He really tries to keep everyone involved in the class. He breaks things down and makes it easy to learn.
great professor! very passionate about political science. there is a quiz every week and an in class essay for the midterm and final. keep up with the reading and go to class and you will be fine. DON'T BE LATE!!
This teacher makes you buy his own book, which costs close to $80. I am currently enrolled in his class, and thus far I resent the incredible cost of the book and its biased (liberal) contents.
grades the midterms hard, but quizzes are pretty easy. overall- wouldnt recommend taking class with this guy.
Great teacher. Never interested in Pols until I took this class. Lectures are very interesting, although he is a hard teacher. Do not be late or he calls you out. Very passionate and really wants you to learn and no bs quizzes or midterms. You must read the book and pay attention in class to pass the class.
Quizes are hard and midterms were tough. But he is a nice guy and i learned (too late in the year) that if you jus pay attention to the lecture rite b4 the quiz then you will get a good score cause he goes over it all rite before he passes out the quiz.
Don't be late to class because he gets all pissed off about it and he makes a big deal out of it. He always wears those hawaiian shirts, which annoys me. He is a hard grader! I would not recommend him! I would recommend Underdal though, but not Gerston. The quizzes are HARD. Even if you read, you have no idea what the questions might be.
If you are into poli-sci and want to learn, by all means- take him! He knows what he is talking about, he's fun, and he makes lectures easy. But if you're just taking this to get a GE out of the way, take someone else. His grades are based off of quizzes, midterm, and final. midterm and final can't be ****ted at all.
This professor knows his stuff well. Interesting lectures & he can be funny. Expects you to know way too much for a GE course though. Attend lectures & you should be fine for the quizzes. As for the midterm & final (not cumulative, thank goodness), good luck. Tip: Study EVERYTHING. There's lots of reading. Nice guy but a really tough grader.
Class was hard but teacher was very interesting and clear. Essays were hard but very broad so you have room to bs. DONT BE LATE...even if he is
Absolutely terrible. Pushes his agenda instead of teaching. I haven't learned anything from him and his crap book. Impossible to predict what he'll test you on so know -everything-!
Great professor. Knows his stuff. You will learn from him if you go to class, are prepared, and pay attention.
Had Gerston last semester for 15A and again this semester. Honestly, my perspective of him has changed. I don't like his teaching or grading AT ALL. Underdal's way better. His quizzes are solely based on his lectures, so attend them. Midterm/final= extremely difficult. Gotta know everything. Way too much material. Extremely boring books. Stay away
Good at explaining basic and important concepts of politics and current issues, but his push for his ideals in lectures and books got old after two semesters. Weekly quizzes are centered mostly on lectures and some material from the books. The final covers around 10 chapters and is an in-class essay based around one out of two questions.
Probably the worst professor I've had the misfortune of coming across. I would recommend this class to someone who enjoys being mind-effed for an hour and fifteen minutes by a long-winded old man. No help at all, and judging from his hawaiian shirts, I think he knows it's time for retirement.
One of the worst professors I have encountered at State so far. I should have known better when my boss warned me against taking him in the first place(yes, he's that old) Tests are based soley on books (which are all written by him)Lectures aren't even relevant to the book reading. He's an old fart who grades rediculously hard and expects too much
Ok reading the reviews below me, I am guessing these were the people in my class who texted, talked to friends and came in late. He will strongly dislike you if you do that. So don't. He TELLS you that the first day! He willingly helps you if you don't get the material and he is straightforward in expectations. Wonderful lecturer. Take him.
Gerston is a passionate prof who is active in political science. It uses textbooks he wrote because he is a respected commentator in TV and printed news. His expectations are that you learn. His tests are an essay based on a broad question you can answer any way you want. I would take a his class again in a heartbeat. Great prof!!!
Worst professor ever!! Midterm and Final are essays in which you have to know every single thing and he doesn't even point you in the right direction to which way to study. One of the worst classes at SJSU
This professor was by far my favorite professor! He actually teaches you something and is hilarious! As long as you read and come to class you will be fine! Don't be late!
weekly exams are easy but finals and midterms are too hard .i attended all the classes but i got a c :(
this professor is a hard grader no extra credit and the finals and midterms are hard
Plenty of enthusiasm in regards to the government and how it was run. Midterm and final were slightly tricky, but gave you plenty of room to give your interpretation. He was very fair when it came to grading, as there didn't seem to be an apparent bias. Anyone who ends up having him will come out of that class satisfied with their investment.
Polished, professional, & a no nonsense attitude when it came to attendance & being respectful. You can tell that he puts a lot of effort into making us become educated citizens. Overall, as long as you did the readings, you should be fine for the quizzes and Final. If not, he would be glad to clarify. You'll take a lot from this class. Trust me.
I went to class every single day. I paid attention and read the books but the questions he picks are sometimes difficult! I think I'm going to get a B in the class but I want an A. I put a lot of work into it. The weekly quizzes are based on his lectures and he is a tough grader when it came to the exams! Only 2 people got A's. For a GE course -_-.
Good professor, passionate about what he teaches. Hint hint, dont be late and dont use electronics.
Extremely knowledgeable in American Government and California Government. Loves to joke around during lectures. Whatever he discusses in class ends up on the quiz; literally. 11 quizzes total (10 count), 1 essay Midterm, and 1 essay Final. If you want an "A" in the class, expect to study a lot. Do not be late to class or use your electronics.
Professor Gerston gives out 11 quizzes (top 10 count), one written midterm, and one written final exam. That's it. As long as you keep up with the reading you should be fine. Overall Gerston is a great professor who cares a lot about his students. He wants you to pass, but you're going to have to earn it.
Lectures were very clear and engaging. The quizzes were extremely easy (multiple choice and fill in the blank type), but the midterm and final were somewhat challenging (essay type). As long as you did the readings and attended class, you should be fine. I definitely would take him again.
Overall, you had 2 midterms consisting of an essay portion and a vocabulary section, one group term paper, and a journal that you had to maintain while working on the group project. Gerston was very clear and direct about his expectations for the project. Follow instructions and you should be fine.
Gerston is awesome. He really cares about the material he is teaching, so its easy to learn. Midterms are straight forward and as long as you show up to take notes (because nothing is posted online). We needed two books written by him, which were easy to find at good prices. Theres also a big group project thats easy if you just participate!
Professor Gerston is an amazing lecturer and his class was very thought provoking. I truly enjoyed coming to class everyday. However, as a Professor Gerston fails. He does not give clear expectations for his exams and his quizzes are somewhat based on arbitrary facts from lectures and the book. There is not a lot of framework to help you succeed.
only had 3 tests, all equally weighted. also had a chance to not take last test if satisfied with our previous test scores. No hw/assign/projects. pay attention in class because stuff he says is important if ur living in USA. if u don't get it, ask. Test terms easy if u paid attention and study notes. Essay Qs are general Qs and nothing tricky.
This class was pretty easy. 2 midterms including an essay (4 pages) and defining 10 terms. The whole of the class was based on a group project. Some classes dedicated to working on project. A significant amount of time outside class to work on it. It is 25-30 pages long. Hes a funny guy but if youre late by a few mins makes a lil comment or face.
Dr. Gerston is okay. Lectures consisted of him just talking for about 2 hours. Jolly guy tho! He does not provide slides or study guides and only specifies which pages to read for the upcoming exam. There is a LOT of reading so form a group to split it up. Study textbook terms and familiarize yourself with lecture concepts- you will be okay!
Our entire grade is pretty much 3 tests. No hw, no class work, no quizzes. Based on lectures and readings. No study guide. You need to make a study group to pass.
ENTIRE grade based off 3 exams, so you NEED to attend class | nice guy, but literally nothing to boost your grade | EXAMS are multiple choice + essay questions. he gives you topic options for the essay, which he hints about in his LECTURES. you'll need to study (terms, concepts) | also, if you took ap gov, this is review of that
An old fashioned professor that doesn't allow laptops for notes and teaches solely from the whiteboard. Lots of reading from textbooks that you definitely need to do to prepare for the exams. No homework, only 2 midterms and a final. For all exams you have to write an essay that should be about 3-4 pages long or longer and to define 10 terms.
