Excellent Outlook on Course
loves genetics!!!
not a bad teacher but poor techniques for note taking
A great leader and human being! He should be president of the university! I like his teaching and dedication to all that is living. A good partier too.
Poor material for notes, cannot pronouce some of the words. Spits when he talks, as well as taking out his teeth at some point in a conversation.... GROSS. He is also hard to follow in a lecture, interupts with what he did in his hockey game.
dodgy explanations. notes a bit spotty too. He's a bit full of himself; be prepared to hear about his personal life.
Enthusiastic, but lacks the cool gene
Knows his material, smart, expects a lot from his students, but is willing to help... he's enthusiastic (sometimes scarily so) and has a great outlook on the course; I loved his attempts to bring in current affairs and rock music was the best!!!!
EXCELLENT PROF!!!!

really bad notes- they're more like cue cards- , sucks air through his teeth A LOT, pronounces words wrong, stumbles on words and interrupts his lectures with something either irrelevant or confusing, and condescending.
He's a lot of fun, obviously knows his material and loves his subject. He tries to actually get to KNOW his students, and is usually very helpful.
Very hard prof, hes a funny weirdo, and he has very dry jokes
very unhelpful, poor notes, spits when he talks, takes his teeth out, interrupts lectures, boring, although he starts classes off with a song...
Genuine nice guy, who really puts forth an honest effort to make us understand what he's teaching. Very approachable, and a good with one on one teaching.
Where's larry at (Lariat)? Oh, he's out excising some introns...
This professor plays favourites. He can be very rude and inconsiderate. He is also very intimidating and very unfair. I am a good student, and I did do well in his class, so this isn't coming from someone who has received poor marks in his course. He can be very interesting, but on a one to one basisI do not like being around him.
didn't really enjoy answering questions from the students. Never said what was on the final exam.
He's really nice, and helpful when you go and see him in his office. Makes sure that you understand the material. Overall a good prof.
He makes a good effort but his notes are terrible. He's also very hard to listen to...he's all over the place when he lectures which makes things confusing in class...make sure to read the book and make ur own notes...cause he'll test you on stuff that's in the book and not in his notes!!!!
Notes aren't very good... you'll have to rely heavily on the text. His assignments for genetics are really helpful, so are the tutorials. Some of the best class resources you can get. Talks too much about his personal life. What a frigging nerd! Sense of humour extremely sub-par... if you find this guy funny, you need help.
I thought Dr. Hale was a very fair prof, he was very excited about his course which made classes interesting. Many people complain about the difficulty however if you put in effort and pay attention in tutorials there is no way to do poorly. He is really helpful when you approach him properly. Don't go demanding help, he won't like you, but if y
Interesting class, very enuthsiastic about genetics! Tests can be hard however, and it's hard to find time to get extra help from him because he is so busy doing research and he is the chair of bio. But, when he does give extra help it's good stuff.
Good instructor; enjoyed his class because he's very obviously excited about the stuff he's teaching - especially genetics. Definitely need to use the textbook a lot to 'fill in blanks' - but his notes are a good guide as to what to focus on. Friendly & helpful when you go to see him one on one. Made the class very enjoyable.
take this guy if u want to hear a song at the first of class not if u want him to teach you , have to do studying by yourself cause his notes suck
I went to every single class except one, but although his lectures did help me remember some of the information more his notes were quickly forgotten. They werent useful at all. I could have skipped class altogether because I learned everything off the text anyhow. Hours at the books. Expect this. But I found the bio text pretty interesting.
Genuine person, cares about teaching and students unlike other profs(hurta). Notes are sparse but they are meant to be, need to take your own from that. Awesome teacher , enthusiastic about material. Very fair
real good professor
Dr. Hale is very interested in bioogly and plays a song at the start of every class. However his lectures are poor, and his notes are very incomplete. I would suggest reading the textbook a lot and taking your own notes. His exams are fair if you know your stuff, mostly multiple choice.
He is knowledgeable and enthusiastic, but despite the theatrical nature of his delivery in lecture, I didn't remember a damn thing from class. Make your own notes from the book. Read it, pretty well all of it (yes, I know it's big). The exams are fair & labs are fun (instructors were hot so I paid more attention), but it's still pretty tough.
VERY enthusiastic and knowledgable. However, his exams are pretty hard and you really have no idea what to expect going into them. He expects a lot from a first year biology course. His jokes and long rambles were sometimes hard to listen to.
-tests are very hard, class notes do not help much YOU MUST READ THE BOOK to pass
Larry is the best prof in the Bio department (I've literally had them all). He is a great lecturer and I found his tests to be challenging but VERY fair. His notes are brief but they are ment to encourage people to go to class. Enthusiastic and very approachable. I think he has a bad reputation because people are bitter about their marks. Study!
Very enthusiastic. Tests were pretty difficult.
Larry is a bit of a goof and geek, and it comes through sometimes...in a good way. Nice guy, knows his stuff. Genetics can be hard for some bio students because they're usually memorizers. I thought it was a breeze...just puzzles and logic.
The professor's notes are not helpful at all, they are very brief. The Exam is very hard and I would suggest to read the textbook. The textbook is more helpful than the notes and lectures.
He soetimes gets off topic and ca be hard to follow when he is running around. That being said, as long as you keep up with the readings and go to class, he is more than willing to go out of his way to help. Not eve one of my Prof's anymore and still willing to do 1 on 1 sessions when i need help with Physiology or Genetics.
Hale's teaching style is rather boring but he knows his stuff. The course is hard, hard, hard. It is an inch deep and a mile wide. You are expected to know a ton of mat'l. you must read the text and study your butt off. His test are hard but fair to the content clearly outlined by syllabus. Course notes are brief & a red herring for the lazy.
very hard questions
I find him a very interesting and engaging prof, especially since he's interested in making his students engaged citizens. He does rely heavily on the text and figures. Go to class. He will tell you what is on the tests directly, or will go over it repeatedly which makes it obvious.. Go to class, read the book, and you'll do fine. He is very fair.
Nice enough guy - even with some interesting moments - but he could be a better lecturer. I wish he wouldn't flip between the slides so much. It becomes confusing even though he's trying to relay topics together.
Nice guy, but I found his lectures impossible to sit through. He knows what he's talking about but forgets that not everyone else does.
Larry is a nice guy, almost too nice. The large class would take advantage of this and talk a lot during his lectures, which was very disrespectful and distracting.
I love Hale. He was tough in my first year but when I had him for micro van cell he was awesome. He really loves bio and uses the textbook a lot. You can do really well in his class if you read and listen to his lectures.
Dr. Hale has a lovely personality, and interacts very well with the class. A bad joke here and there but he does get the material across to you. Very good to keep you updated on goings on in the class via email, so check your inbox daily! TIP: He likes Pulp Fiction a LOT so if you talk to him about it, he'll probably love you.
3 words. Death By Powerpoint.
I looked up Larry Hale on this site before attending class, and something stuck out at me: "an inch deep and a mile wide". It's true. But he conveys it in a good way and if you really study the textbook it's nor impossible. I think he's the very embodiment of what you'd expect in a professor.
Awful prof. Very confusing and hard to understand. Expects you to know a lot about bio that most first years would not know. Rushes through material and asks irrelevant questions on tests. Good luck.
He's not helpful and tests you on the textbook but teaches something completely different. You need to do more than the classwork to pass the class.
Didn't learn a whole lot about bio, he giggles a lot to his bad jokes and his tests were mostly on the textbook (although he didn't mention to read it before them).
He has a great personality, but his teaching style was very hard to understand and his tests were very hard. The tests were not like what we learned in the lectures at all.
I'm only two weeks into his class and already completely lost. He expects his students to have way more previous knowledge than we do. He bases everything off of the textbook. He's making me dislike bio. He laughs at his bad jokes a lot and its awkward. The notes he provides are not good, read the textbook! Good luck; you'll need it.
Attended most classes but always look at the online notes if I missed a class but still had no clue what was on the tests
Says he wont test on certain names/tables from the text that he covers but there will be questions on them on the tests. Doesn't give clear instruction on what to read from the text. Suggested to by the new textbook for use of the online material because the quiz/test will be similar but it was not.
Larry Hale is an amazing professor with clear grading criteria. He also wants the progress of students during midterms so he organises a mini quiz to prep students for the midterm. Glad to take a class with him again.
Have heard nothing but bad things about him, however I thought he was a pretty good prof for microbiology. Clear on what is to be tested. Gives decent lecture notes on moodle.
Larry's one of the most engaging profs I've had. Read the material beforehand and go to class for in-depth discussions and clarifications. Available to help students outside of class.
lecture heavy. Read the textbook thoroughly and do the mastering biology assignments. There is a section on the mastering biology website called "dynamic study modules" and they are questions that are generated by Pearson. Majority of the multiple choice on the mid terms and exams are the questions from the Pearson test bank.
Has the potential to be a great professor. However, he expects students to know more than the grade 12 curriculum teaches, as well as says he will test on one thing and tests on another. Beware, his tests are full of surprises
Just one word. DON'T choose him if you are not a good reader and do not have enough time to do the online homework! Especially if you are a second language learner like me! YOU WILL GO CRAZY by his teaching style because he always jumps from one topic to another and always making non-related and nobody-care jokes!
He is a good professor, but you should be careful not to fall behind his lectures. Otherwise, you are gonna get screwed up for the final exam.
Great personality, hard exams, mostly clear with what you should know, interested in the topics, available for help, good luck passing if you don't go to class, posts everything online, provides sample exams, used his powerpoints more than the textbook, do the masteringbio assignments.
Larry Hale is a genuine guy. He goes through material fairly quick so you need to take on the responsibility of doing your reading after class. He is sometimes hard to understand but he gets the point across eventually.
Oh Larry, He's not the best at explaining things so get ready to read the textbook and to make your notes. Also he took all his final exam Qs from the study area of MasteringBio. I taught myself the course. If you have a good work ethic and like reading you'll do fine but if you learn better from hearing rather than reading find a different prof.
Hard to follow in lectures. Goes super fast on the material. He absolutely loves textbook figures and expects you to know everything. He is making me rethink my major.
Sometimes gets a bad rep for having a really difficult class, but does his best to make it applicable. Gives a practice midterm and exam just like the real things and offers 4% bonus for Mastering Biology quizzes. If you study, the class is not as bad as people say it is.
Im 23 years old and Ive been to 4 different universities around Canada, and Larry was by far the worst prof Ive ever had. He is very hard to follow in lectures so get ready to teach yourself everything. His exams are very unreasonable, he expects you to know exactly what he teaches and even more. Makes you feel like its a 4th year bio course.
Bases midterm off figures from textbook, be sure to read the textbook before midterm as his slides are not relevant to any test material.
Great prof, he is very enthusiastic. Tests can be somewhat hard but not impossible. Using the study area on mastering bio definitely helps and reading the textbook can also help. I did not read the textbook a lot but I still did well. Enjoyed his class.
I often laughed a lot in class because he would laugh at his own jokes which I thought was funny in itself. But in all honesty he relies too much on only textbook material. I almost felt like it was useless going to class because everything I was going to be tested on came from the textbook anyway, especially the figures. So be prepared to read!
Dr. Hale is an organized professor who works hard to make sure his students learn. He provides great lectures, typed notes, and practice exams. He also has dedicated office hours and is always happy to answer questions. I learned a lot from his class and would definitely recommend him.
Dr. Hale was very organized and always prepared. If he offers blackboard sessions it is a good idea to attend them. Mastering biology is very usueful for preparing for his tests. He is quite quirky and often laughs at his own jokes. He knows his stuff and is very interested in the content that he teaches. Make sure that you know th figures.
Runs a hard class, but the course is almost exactly from the book so as long as you read the right chapters before and test and truly understand the concepts you'll do well. I took notes at the beginning of the semester, but stopped because there was just too much material to write down. I studied for test just with the book.
He loves biology so much. He thinks all his students are as passionate about biology as he does so he doesn't teach the lessons very well, just talking about his experiences . He expected way too much from us, we had 6 pages notes, 10 page slides, a video and a live lecture per week. I never had time do any of it.
Dr. Hale is a wonderful human who is passionate about what he teaches. He's a very quirky guy which makes lectures more interesting. This is not an easy class though! His tests are HARD. You need to work for it. Read the book, understand the figures, memorization won't get you far. Even though the class is difficult, Dr. Hale is a standup guy.
Disgustingly incompetent when it comes to actual class interaction/teaching style. Lectures heavily on topics completely unrelated to course material and not covered on tests. In dire need of some train the trainer education.
I decided to change my major because of him. He thinks everyone is as passionate about biology as him, although very interesting and fun lecture, there is a lot of reading involved. His courses are all mandatory for bio major, so no running and be prepared to study the whole pearson bio book if you want pass the course with good grades.
Larry hale was overall a really good prof. He really loves what he does and it shows! Larry gave extra credit and was always open for questions! Text book is used a lot in this course and is worth buying!
Larry is a kind professor, I did find, however, that the course itself was difficult in a hybrid form.
He will put things in final that he has not thought, and will get mad at his students for having a poor average in quizzes when there is clearly a different source to this problem. You must put more hours in watching lectures outside class.
You can tell he's very passionate about what he's teaching but he doesn't do a good job teaching it AT ALL. He posts hour long videos that you need to watch before every class and then just goes over questions anyone has during the lecture time. Midterms and exams had super specific and random questions on them. Get ready to read the textbook.
Larry Hale knows the material well. However he uses his class time very poorly and does not teach the lectures. His leactures are posted online and are extremely content heavy and time consuming, this is not ideal when he could just teach the content normally in lecture. When we do have lecture he answers unhelpful questions and is unorganized.
Larry Hale is very energetic about his lectures, but he talks too much in my opinion and he jumps around from one thing to another before finishing anything. He's a nice guy, but maybe not the best professor. Lectures are very content heavy and he expects you to do all the homework (which is a lot).
One of the worst professors I've had. He didn't teach at all and made us watch videos before the class and ask questions in class. If you have a busy schedule it's easy to fall behind. The midterm is hard and the question are worded weird
Worst professor I've ever had, he's a great person, he's a terrible teacher. As 1st year course, there's SO MUCH. Used to go to lectures but found it useless as I ended up having to teach myself everything. He tends to jump from one place to another which has nothing to do with the course, VERY DIFFICULT to follow. use TEXTBOOK, way more helpful.
Worst prof ever! Great person but a TERRIBLE teacher. Way too much material to go over BEFORE class, talks about random things in class, VERY difficult to follow. I honestly don't bother with the videos, I used the textbook to study,1000x more helpful. Wording on any questions is very odd/weird and makes it extremely complicated.
He posts his lectures online that you have to watch, and his classes are just answering questions. You have to read the textbook too, because about 10% of his tests are things mentioned in the textbook that he did not teach. Needless to say, his tests are very hard. With over 150 people in the class, the average for the midterm was in the low 50s.
This class is brutal as your first university-level course out of high school. Don't bother going to the lectures because he doesn't go over much unless people ask questions. Do the Poll Everywheres for bonus points. Lectures are on YouTube, take hours to go through, and he filmed them two years ago, so he really doesn't do much teaching at all.
In my five years at UPEI I have never had a worse professor. Simply put, he cannot teach. None of his lectures are useful, nor will the content he tells you is on the tests show up. The midterm was a low 50 average with 300 students. Avoid at all costs.
Dr. Hale was funny, but a terrible prof. The midterm + exam were virtually impossible to do based solely on what was in his video lectures. You have to memorize the textbook and spend 3+ hours per week outside of in-person lectures watching his videos and taking notes. Several questions on the final were never discussed and no one knew.
Lectures were videos posted that you had to watch before class. Class time was used only for questions and simple explanations. The midterm and finals were completely different than any practice given. Questions are pulled directly from the textbook so study that. If anything, the textbook was more useful than the lectures.
He doesn't teach during his lectures, there are hour long videos you have to watch before every class but he does live stream so you can watch from home. I personally am not a fan of his teaching style. Videos are super content heavy and test questions are pretty specific but Larry is super engaging and very interested in what he teaches.
You will need to teach yourself everything. Not a good prof at all.
probably the funniest man I've ever met, and for the first half of semester you'll love him until the midterm. his tests are so specific and he puts fill in the blanks that are impossible to understand.
I think I would just give up if I had to take another class with this man. he doesn't teach during lectures so don't bother going. Tests are very specific and even if you know the notes word for word you're not scoring very high. I memorized everything and got a 64 on the midterm. worst experience ever for my first semester of university.
It is very clear that Dr. Hale is passionate about science. He starts each lecture with a “science in the news” story. I didn't mind watching the pre-recorded lectures, as it allowed me to pause the video to write notes and make sense of difficult topics. He is available almost every day for office hours to give additional help to students.
The midterms and exams were completely different from the practice questions and notes he'd given us. If you plan on taking this class, start studying now!
Professer is nice but his tests are extremely difficult even if you study all the material he provides for his students. His practice midterms and practice exams don't help prepare students, and his tests are very specific, which doesn't show your understanding of the actual main topic.
Lovely human being, quite passionate about his subject, however, he is not great at the actual teaching part of his job.
Uses a "flipped classroom" teaching style; he doesn't teach during lectures, and you learn everything via YT videos. He uses Poll Everywhere; if you participate, you can get 3% extra credit, which can save your grade. Very lovely person, but not the best (not worst) professor. Very specific with tests too; get ready to memorize a lot of details.
no point in me saying much because he's retiring this year, just wanted to leave this out of spite.
Very dependent on textbook and will quiz you on something he may have briefly mentioned once. The midterm was harder than the final. All of the lectures were videos online, very time consuming to get through. Says class is for questions only. He will call you out in class if you are not paying attention. Overall, was not a comfortable environment.
Lectures did not cover what came on the midterms/final exam, you basically have to read everything on the textbook and teach yourself
Lectures were mixed, with some useful info but a lot of jumping around. The textbook was more helpful than the class. unstuck ai and other study aids like ChatGPT were lifesavers for prep. Overall, a tough but passable course.
Literally the class average on the midterm in my 1320 class was below 50%. A class average of fails is crazy and most definitely the professors fault. As someone who studies hard and usually succeeds in biology courses I got a 78 on the 1310 midterm and 69 on the 1320 midterm. He is a crazy hard grader and definitely do not rely on the slides.
hes retiring this year, but while he's here, i'll say that he's very dependent on the bio textbook. all his questions are taken from the quiz bank so most of the questions are word for word. despite that, it feels like the course focuses on memorizing rather than actually learning. good person, harsh grader and prof.
He doesn't actually teach during lectures, only answers students questions. Goes on rants a lot. Spends the first 20 minutes of a 50 minute lecture speaking about random stuff. Overall sucks
