Best Canadain History Prof ever!
He is nice and very smart. Hard marker with high expectations!
Very methodical and smart, but always HAS to mention he is DR. Larry Hannant.
Very fair, and easy to do well if you understand him. Great instructor.

Okay, we know you have your doctorate, but learn some manners, Larry! Really...
good lectures, hard tests
knows his stuff, and expects you too as well!
Nice guy, really helpful but really hard!
This is a senior undergraduate course that he teaches at UVic. In general he is very clear and is certainly a master of historical material. As for grades, everyone I have talked to in the class thinks he is very fair--a lot of great grades came back.
Larry really knows his stuff.I heard horror stories about him but I really like him, he's a fair marker and an excellent teacher. No BS
great guy but his tests are brutal
So clear you can practically see through him.
very clear, doesn't waste time in class. makes a point of teaching from diverse and interesting viewpoints.
nice guy, try hard, sub standard
Nice guy, hard marker but really fair.
Can't stand the guy, class is a total bore and he marks way too hard!
worst teacher every, says "it Univeristy level" but we are college students in a first year class. get real to everyone who marked him good, the guys' a joke and his class it too
I should have stuck with the class. Dry and lots of reading, but later realized I learned a lot from him. Get to know him and he can be really caring and helpful. I was totally terrified, which wasn't a good approach at all. Go to learn.
This guy would make an exellent advisor to any political master like Stalin. Tends to be very fair providing one has woven the correct polemical slant in one's paper. I recommend reassignment to Henchmen for Lost Causes 101.
Very organized, and precise. Lectures flow smoothly, fits all the pieces of the puzzle together. Will do great if you are able to take a lot of information, and see how it relates to themes and concepts in a larger picture.
Well written Larry!
Worthwhile class for those who enjoy History. Near 2hour lectures can be hard to sit through. Hard exams, minimal essay writing. Glad I had him.
Oh my gosh! Most dull and boring teacher ever. History isnt that interesting of a course to begin with, he sure doesnt help the fact at all! Horrible, and DULL teacher!
More concise, clear, and interesting than the other one I had. Stays on topic. Says UH a bit too much tho, Breathe, Larry! Doesn't go too fast though... Very easy compared to History 110! Hurrah for 3-Question Quizzes and NO essays!
The class ranged widely in terms of previous knowledge yet he mangaged to keep a maximum of students interested. Also, he did not treat slower students condisendingly during seminars if they didn't answer what he wanted but they tried
Worst teacher I've ever had in my life!!!
when I didn't think post confederation Canada could get any more boring...along came Larry and his monotone voice. The only good thing that came from this class is now I have a book to make me fall asleep at night!!!!!!!
Larry is a great guy, he's very helpful and was really accomadating when I wanted to register for the class.Tons of reading...TONS!Exams are soul crushing. If you are looking for a casual course on Cdn Hist look elsewhere. For passionate historians only!
His lectures vary with the material. Cdn history was very dull, but 19th century world was very good. Tough exams, very personable
Very thorough, although I believe he subscribes to the death-by-reading philosophy...
Avoid taking 112 with him or any class. Monotone voice. Hard exams.
Not too sure what the big deal is, he's one of the best history profs out there, he just expects you learn the info. Try Uvic's History department, if you really want to **** about hard markers, otherwise do the work and stop whining.
Not an easy teacher but very knowledgeable and willing to help if you have individual problems. On the other hand, way way way too much dry reading.
Probably one of the worst teachers I've had at Camosun. Hard marker (which is fine, but I think he forgot that it was a 100 level course)and snooty comments on papers/exams. The material was interesting and relavent, he just didn't do it justice.
interesting instructor, answers questions in riddles and seems to enjoy it.demanding teacher, challenging.could use a little "sharpening of the saw," i think - maybe a little attitude adjustment would help..????
Before taking his 1600- 1970 class I loved history but afterwards I couldn't get out of there faster! His hour disscusions seemed to go on for 3 hours and his monotone voice put you to sleep! Not to metion his weird obsession with rearanging the desks in the class before starting it and moving everyone around in the middle of classes!
C'mon, Hannant's well-read and proves it in his lectures. He's also a pretty nice guy. Forget the comment below; this clown thinks he can discredit Hannant when he can barely spell or write? He's probably just testy because Dr. Hannant woke him from his hangover when he moved the desks. Remember: you can't cast pearls before swine.
I had Larry several years ago and still regard him as one of the best profs at Camosun. He is very clear and organized, and his teaching style demands that students really know their stuff.
Okay, granted Larry knows his****, however he can be a real hardass on quality of work. He's merciless when it comes essay errors and is quite full of himself. Fine, he's a good teacher, but could loosen up around the collar and stop bragging about his books. (Which by the way are terribly boring...) My opinion only. Please, make one yourself!
for those of you who are hoping to actually go somewhere with history, i do not recommend larry as a teacher, he is SO unclear and famous for rambling and going off topic. i found it very hard to take good notes because i was never quite sure what he was talking about. he's a nice guy and he means well but his teaching abilities are lacking.
A professor that encourages students to drop out??? Lectures are filled with üseless prepositions to fill time while he's thinking about what he's saying - very confusing for notes. Goes FAR off topic at any question. He makes it clear that he reads his own ratings on RMP first day of class...maybe should impliment some of the ideas.
Larry's not so bad. He is a smart man, and definitely knows his stuff. You have to be willing to work hard and study. It's a difficult first year course. That's college. He's not going to babysit you! It's not about how well he teaches, it's about how much you're willing to teach yourself and how dedicated you are. Welcome to college.
Hands down, the most stupifyingly inarticulate prof I’ve ever had. Every lecture was two hours of ‘um’ and ‘ah.’ His reputation as a ‘hard’ prof comes from his insistence on scholarly sources, but his idea of intellectualism is wallowing in facile anti-Americanism; there’s no ‘hard’ think
larry you are the man.keep up the good work and dont listen too much to these comments-unless there is truth to them.the world needs more historians so be patient and remember its part of your job to inspire young people to learn history-and also what you may find intersting students may hate-so maybe consider them a little more. larry rules!
I was looking forward to this 1900-1945 class before taking it. But Hannant managed to turn me off history. There's a ridiculous amount of reading each week and no real way to gauge how you're doing in the course until the last week before the final. The only assignments are the term paper and final. I recommend another prof if youre thinking of 10
Very good class. Only complaint - there was no midterm (as a sample of his marking for the final). There is lots of reading for the seminars. Text is skimable and you can usually pull out the important parts. Likes to use political cartoons. Fair marker. Essay topics are very broad and general leaving room to insert your ideas. Would take him again
um, ah, okay then... a sample of the most meandering, ridiculously confusing prof I've ever encountered. All A's this semester except Hannant's course which I take full responsibility for, because I was THAT bored. No midterm, makes it hard to figure out final and his paper expectations are way too high.
children struggle with work and critical thought.i've taken 2 classes with larry and each time watched people drop out and complain, rather than work hard.then they come here and try and make a PHD, multiple time author look like the reason they got a bad grade - how pathetic.
GREAT
I respect Larry as a author and as a scholar of History. Being a student majoring in history and political science i am amazed at Larrys intellect. But his marking is gruesome. For first year history courses , he marks them as 3rd or 4th year courses. He lectures like he writes, which is dry, and he turns alot of students off of history.
I respect that Larry is a very hard working author, but i found the class SO dry. Burnt toast dry. He reminded me of Lumberg from Office Space."Mmmm.... yeeeaaahh." His monotone voice made me lapse into a coma. Also, the textbook was almost as boring as his lectures, but at least it could be used as a pillow.
Not a big fan. After giving me an idea for my final essay he pretty much undermined the fact that I chose it and because he disagreed with my opinion of the peice he graded me lower. I shouldn't have to agree with his opinion to get a good grade.
Hands down, Larry is the best instructor I've had yet at Camosun. He is both a wealth of information and a fair marker. I look forward to taking more classes from the man.
This man should be fired and shipped overseas. He is the worst teacher I have EVER had, the very definition of knowledge should not be placed anywhere near the traits that this man has. He is boring, mindless, narrow minded, and self centered. Very hard grading and very vague when asked about assignments or tests. Pathetic..
I need a pillow in this class - I used to LOVE history but I find myself needing a nap before, during and after his class. I hope my opinion changes on this guy but I completely dread his class... but I will remember to read his text because otherwise I am about as Clueless as Cher (from the show Clueless).... yeah.
larry is tough, no doubt about it.but how should college be?i guess at camo there are many idiots longing for a return to high school and the ease of it.larry might be the best prof in camo's history department.
Hrm yes my feelings about this class have not changed, but he's becoming less dry and is atleast showing a small sense of humor.

Larry is a great proffesor. I highly recommend this class if your not fresh out of high school and expecting an easy grade. He marks hard but if you do the work (such as reading the text) the class is great and an A is achievable!
Very hard marker, not for the faint of heart or those who think that they could earn a good mark by simply sitting in class. However, I liked him a lot, and I will take one of his classes again.
I really disliked him, he was a hard marker and shot down every idea you had.if you opinion is not his opinion, when he is asking for your opinion (make sence?) then he will look past you. JERK!
I wasn't happy with the class but you did learn a lot from it. He was only focused on his own opinion and no one elses. Hard marker.
Larry is an incredible brillant person who expects others to be, so yes he is a hard marker. However, he is deffinatly a great prof. His knowledge is not just limited to books, but rather real life. He lays out the entire course for you all you have to due is jump through the hoops.
I can't stand Hannant's class. He is opinionated and doesn't appreciate a variety of opinions (although you'd think a seminar would be a good place for discussion/debate). Hard marker and his lectures are terrible. Half the time I have no idea what he is talking about, not very good for note taking. I don't recommend his class.

Very helpful and interesting in lecture. Listened to other people and was a fair marker on exams and papers. Knowledgable, kinda funny, and the class was easy!
Larry is... Larry. You either love him or hate him. Very intelligent, as helpful as he can be, but by no means easy. There is a lot of reading, the tests are hard, and you might find yourself constantly ranting from frustration. Still, though - if you are looking to learn some serious History, his class is where it's at. Just work hard!
Larry is intelligent and enthusiastic about history. He is disorganized at times. His classes are not easy; he is a fair marker but you need to work hard for an A. My criticism of Larry is that many of his readings are very hard left, with little to balance them out.E.g, I did not feel we got a fair overview of the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Although Larry's lectures are disorganized, if you put in the work to go through the information he gives you, you will be surprised at how much he has to teach. Hardest class ever. Learned more from him than most of my other teachers. Enough said.
I found Larry'sd class really easy, but you do have to be at least a little motivated to actually work. If your having problems he'll bend over backwards for you, though you wouldn't know it to look at him. Honestly, what he really needs is to crack a joke once in a while. I've met morticians with a better sense of humour.
He studders in his lectures, and is impossible to take notes on. He also doesn't lecture using the textbook. So it's hard to study when you don't have any notes from his lectures since some of the material is not in the textbook. NOT RECOMENDED!
Really nice guy but his lectures are really hard to follow (lots of ums and uhs) and his seminars are done in such a way that only a minority of the class seems to speak.
Larry gives the worst lectures imaginable, and has managed to completely ruin history for more than half the class. He gives little to no feedback, is biased, and not-so-subtley attempts to convert the class to communism. I highly recommend you run the other way.
This class is hard but rewarding. Hannant is highly intelligent and academic. His lectures are very interesting but can be hard to follow. It is VERY important to know how to take good notes. If you want to be challenged this is an exceptional class but stay away if you expect an easy A. That said I would definitely take another class from Hannant.
Hannant is one of the best profs I have come across during my many years in the post secondary world. He is tough but fair and makes himself available for advice. Many students are unnecessarily intimidated by his intelligence and miss his quirky sense of humour altogether. I loved my classes though they were a challenge. Definately recommended.
Dropped the ball on this one. He's a smart man, but I've yet to see him figure out how to actually teach his students... Or, at the very least, get ORGANIZED so that his students have a shot at teaching themselves...
How to put it? The course is a good one, but he doesn't add any humor, even if he is inspired by world history :(Otherwise, if you use the textbook, not many useful note is class, then you should be okay)
His teaching technique is not favourable. He goes on about (well what he is talking about is unclear) his seminars seem to be centred around him and the discussion leader. The assignments are unclear. If you read the text book you'll be okay but that's about it. Seems kinda pointless to have him teach if all you learn is from the text book.
Long drawn out lectures which do nothing except evoke sleepiness and doodling. The marking for the mandatory "discussions" is rife with favoritism. You can just skip the lectures and read the text book. Its more interesting.
Larry's lectures are awesome if you are interested in the subject. I didn't open my textbook all semester and got an A. He cares about the subject, and is passionate when he speaks, which keeps you interested. I hate the weekly discussions. I still don't understand how he decides on your mark for that part. You can talk all class and not get 10/10.
Larry clearly cares a lot about history and has a great deal of knowledge. If you follow his lecture notes by using the book or taking notes, you'll do fine in the course. Discussions really depend on who's there and what class you're taking. They can be great, other times very dry. It really depends largely on the STUDENTS. Great Course.
Larry is a great professor. Extremely intelligent and thoughful. You need to be prepared to learn, write well and put in some effort in his courses. If you are not a first-year post-secondary student, this courses will be the best you ever take. History of the Middle East is an amazing course, well designed and great material.
For a first year hist teacher, Hannant was fairly poor. The first exam had almost nothing to do with his lectures and relied solely on obscure information from the textbook. Get used to it. He's a hard marker. That's fine. It isn't his job to babysit. It is, however, his job to realize that we are not all interested in "achieving" a PHD in History.
Hannant is a solid teacher. You better be willing to put in your time if you want a possible A. People are sometimes put off by him, but he is an excellent professor in theory. Not everyone will find his teaching style preferable, luckily he is a nice guy and will totally help you out if you just ask!
Larry knows his stuff, that much is for sure. Other than that, his teaching is terrible. An extremely hard marker for first year courses, and speakers during his mandatory discussions are not encouraged. Opinionated and probably turning more students off history than onto it, I do not recommend Larry as a teacher.
For a class I expected to be very interesting, it wasn't. His lectures are very dry, is a hard marker, and the mandatory discussions are a pain. However,he is very helpful and fair when approached with problems.
Larry was often very humourous during lectures, making light of rather grim situtions that were being discussed. The course content was a little dry, although many dark avenues of Canadian history are visited. I hated Canadian History before this course, now I am very interested. Larry is a hard marker aswell.
I read the comments before registering for his class and thought"I can do this, it can't be that hard"...but it was. However, I am pleased to have finished a course with a real professor. He knows his stuff, expects his students to know it too. He respects others opinions and demands the same. If you're willing to work, u'll get a good mark.
I was really interested in the topics to be covered in this class so I quickly signed up. However, every lecture I was dreadfully bored. Larry clearly knew the material really well, I was just not interested in the way he presented it.
Not good for first year, better for advanced. We had 200 pages to read over 5 weeks. No vocabulary was reviewed and I was discouraged to ask. I was very excited and eager for this class but was quickly overwhelmed. The text was excellent, assigned readings were difficult. If you want to bring down your GPA, this is a good place to s
Yes, the classes are challenging. Yes, you will read a lot. Yes, you will be held to a high standard. You may dislike that because most of the other instructors at Kindermosun will not treat you like a functioning adult. Plans to go on and do well at university? Get prepared by taking a class (or two) with Hannant.
Larry is a real Prof, enough said.He expects you to listen, attend and do all the readings. If you show interest, he will show interest in you but don't expect him to babysit.Seminar is big so make sure you do your readings and pipe up when you have an opinion,he loves this. He will open your eyes, so don't expect any history channel lessons.
Larry is a nice guy, but his lectures could sometimes verge on unbearable. Attendance not mandatory. I definitely would say I had to learn from the text on this one.The discussions were interesting but he is a hard marker + discussion content can be very difficult to read! If you study you should do okay but you'll be mainly learning on your own.
Such a boring class. I was so interested in this subject until the class started. All he gave was the facts, such as dates and places, but no real substance that you couldn't learn from reading a textbook. If you're going to take this class, be able to take fast notes in lecture, and make sure you attend and participate in the discussion.
Spoke in monotone. Hard to pay attention.
Hannant is pretty cool and an Author to say the least... With an award. This man knows his stuff. Still lookin good for a guy of about 60 and has such a smooth voice.
Larry is an incredibly intelligent man who knows history of the 20th century inside out. He is insightful and while at some points a bit dry his lectures are extremely informative. You wont have to read the textbook unless you miss a class. As long as you participate in the discussions and think outside the box you'll do great.
Larry is a really cool guy. He is not necessarily the easiest or most approachable of professors, but I loved my class with him. The reviews here had me worried about my class with him, but I really enjoyed it. If you are willing to work hard and put in effort, you will do well in Larry's class. I would absolutely take another class with him.
Dr. Hannant is hands down my favourite professor ever. The man possesses such an insight into history and the human condition that I consider it a great privilege to have taken 3 of his courses.
His lectures can be a bit dry if you aren't listening, but he REALLY knows his stuff. If you put effort into the material, he is happy to go out of his way to help you. A really good professor as long as you are interested in the material.
If you're shy, he comes across as unapproachable, but if you actually talk to him, he is really helpful and knows his stuff! Great teacher. Had him in 3 classes. Would totally take another class of his any day.
Dr. Hannant is such an intelligent and wonderful professor. I learned a lot from his class. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to be ready for upper level University years. His lecture will open your eyes and guide you to think outside the box.
Larry is a great prof. His lectures aren't super lively, but he knows the material extremely well and will answer any question thrown his way. I've taken a few classes with seminars and I found Larry's to be the most rewarding, but don't expect to get a decent grade in the seminars without doing the reading and participating. He's a good guy.
Larry is an excellent teacher. He is incredibly knowledge and passionate about history. His seminars are done in a round table format, and you will be graded on your participation. However, Larry wont grade you harshly for incorrect answers or contributions. Simply being willing to contribute is sufficient for a good grade. An excellent prof.
Professor Hannant is an amazing teacher. He helped perk my interest in history and prepare me to go on to the history program at the University of Toronto. He covers the material clearly and thoroughly while making classes interesting. You will have to work for your grade, but will take so much more from it as a result.
Larry is extremely knowledgable, but his lectures are quite dull and hard to follow, as he delivers information in a story-like fashion. Make sure you do all the assigned readings from the textbook and articles; his exams are tough and based off this material. Good luck.
Witty, classy and inspiring. I personally loved his lectures, and the way he uses humour to illustrate the history. I enjoyed all of the assignments, and the format for his tests. Careful when writing the papers to stay on point as the relatively small number of words allowed doesn't leave much room for anecdotes or straying from the criteria.
