Lagerstrom taught straight from the course reader, so it was a little boring. The class overall was not that difficult.

I thought he was a really cool guy. It was hard for me to stay awake when he turned off the lights though. Either attend lecture, or read the lecture notes (which are like 30 pages/chapter) so i'd recommend going to lecture and paying attention.

Dont go to lecture unless you need some sleep. Follow the lecture notes to do homework. His tests are a little out there though, alot of physics and algebra type questions.

This class is very important, but simple learn, making it boring. I suggest attending class when you can, because his lectures are all based out of his lecture notes which can be bought for about 20 bucks. MT and Final grading was strict(right or wrong).

Engaging topic makes for a great lecture! homework assignments are easy if you gp to lecture. no real need to read the book if you go. tests are pretty easy, just study everything on the study guides.. no oddball questions.

attendence isn't necessary since lecture notes are online. homework is very easy. tests were very hard since it had nothing to do with what we do in our homework. It's like a physics test.

Very boring class. If you are lacking sleep don't worry you will regain some sleep during his lectures. He reads over lecture notes practically word for word. For note-page make sure you bring all programs you've done, that's basically midterm & final.

Very clear and very smart. One of the better professors I've had so far. Tests are a bit tricky. Yes, you can fall asleep in the class, but that goes for about every class.

I had him for ENG 6 and liked him so much I decided to take ENG 7 (even though ENG 7 is not required for my major). He is just a great professor, very respectable and intelligent. His goal is to make you learn, not like some other professors at UCD.

Class is easy if you can sit through it without falling asleep, no fault of the professor, he makes the info more interesting that it could ever be and is very knowledgeable. The labs are pretty easy, and he prepares you well for the tests

He's a great teacher...very clear in lectures. He often repeats what's important or what ppl have trouble in so students will understand. Make ur 1 page cheat-sheet worthwhile and u'll do fine on the midterm...Good luck!

Material is easy to understand, and lecture notes are posted online. He curves really well, so dont worry if your midterm grade isnt all too great. HW is pretty easy also.

i first took 7, liked it the him so much, took 6. he is a really cool guy. to make lecture more interesting, count how many times he says "so on and so forth", my record was 25. hw easy, test even easier, his classes are MUST TAKES!

Taught honors section, very interested in helping students. Testing is fair, but difficult if you don't know the math already. Be sure to take 21A and B BEFORE taking the course, or you may be lost. Not lenient on any sign of cheating. Be aware.

Very boring class, beware of falling asleep but u have to go to lectures... really helps with the MatLab problems due every week. Midterm is based on MatLab and Lecture. Goodluck Engineers with no computer script knowledge... its a doozy

Fair teacher, but bring your own caffeine. Turns off the lights and projects his notes onto the wall, and half the class falls asleep. Lectures are useful. Weekly homework assignments tough, find a classmate to help. Full page notes for tests is godsend.

He's very easy. Count how many times he says "So on and so forth" in class to keep you awake because he's so boring!!! Otherwise, decent lecturer, fair tests, and homework assignments. Take him.

In lectures he explains topics thoroughly, but talks very fast and covers a HUGE amount of material. Midterm is long and hard. Final is extremely hard since it's cumulative and there are a million topics covered. Involves too much memorization.

He lectures very well and covers a lot of material. The homework is very difficult sometimes so its best if you work with a group. The midterm was very difficult but the final was much easier as long as you study and prepare your cheat sheet.

You'll sure learn lotz of stuff in his lecture! Very intelligent teacher. However, pract test and the actual test are completely 2 different thing. If you're good in physics, then you'll probably do gd in the test. He has a big curve, so it's a ok class

if you've done programming or are an ecs major you'll probably ace the class and it will be boring but if you haven't it isn't as easy as these programmers make it out to be. they probably copied the programs from buddy's in class Hw's take a long time.

This class requires you too work. If you have never taken programming you might struggle. The homework is borderline hard and easy. Dont be fooled by the sample midterm at all. It looks really easy but in reality you'll have to study really hard.

BORING. Voice is monotone, subject isn't interesting and puts me to sleep at 9 am. Made me never go to lecture. Buy the reader. Helps a lot for homework and tests. Tests pretty simple.

Good teacher...lecture is boring but it helps for the homework problems and tests. If you go to class the online lecture notes are really necessary. If you've had programmning before its easy...if not its a bit harder. Tests are fair but practice midterm/final are nothing like test STUDY EXAMPLES

Professor is very intelligent, and he presents the material in a relatively clear manner. The midterm is tough, but the homework problems and the final were not too difficult. The class itself is kinda boring, but if you show up and pay attention you should be able to get a decent grade.

Lagerstrom is a good professor, but thats too bad cause the material he has to teach is extremely dull. I dont know anything about programming, so the course wasn't easy. For midterms and finals, find someone's old tests to study. Unless you have to take this class, don't take it.

wow, what a ridiculously boring lecture: it would consist of lagerstrom reciting the manual for eng 6 until time ran out. his lectures were planned well but just boring. homework was very hard, tests were very hard, huge scale for tests. everybody copies the hw so if you dont, you'll be behind.

Bring a sweater to Hunt100 or else you can't fall asleep in the cold A/C. His lectures are straight from the reader, but his explanation makes the class much more clear. His homework is challenging, but not impossible. Tests are moderately easy if you study the notes and do the homework.

Teacher is very well prepared for class, lectures are clear and helpful. Homework is easy to do, even if you're doing it after waking up on Saturday after a long night of partying. Midterm and final are not very difficult. Don't bother with the book, his notes are online. class time == sleep time

Good teacher, good person, boring class material. The class is easy if you know programming, hard if you don't. If you go to lecture, easy A. Homeworks won't take too long, and you get a cheat sheet on your midterm/final. It's just too bad he had to teach such a boring class.

Class was easy as long as you attend lecture. Problem with that is that it's extremely easy to fall asleep in his class since his voice is so mononotous and he turns off the lights all the time. Bring coffee or caffeine to stay awake and you're sure to pass the class.

If you are a right-brained person, this class will hurt your brain. Take this class if you're up for a challenge, and you will learn a lot. Professor is helpful and the material is useful. If you haven't pulled out all your hair after de-bugging 300 lines of javascript, you'll be glad you took it.

Does well with the information he has to present. MATLAB is not the most interestering of material but Lagerstrom does a pretty good job with it. Study hard and work with smart buddies. He offers good notes.

Wow, what soporific lectures. I swear I should have brought a pillow, some pajamas, and a night cap to his lectures. His lectures funnel the lecture note material. You do not have to go to them in other words if you read the lecture notes with interest. His exam and final are ridiculously hard for a freshman class. Lectures != Test difficulty

Homework/examples are fairly easy but watch out for the midterm and final-- they are harder. If your final's grade>midterm's, he lowers the midterm's grade-weight(from 30 to 10%) and raises the final's (from 40 to 60%), a second chance should you flunk the midterm. In my class, the average is 50% for midterm, 67.75% final, and 69.88% final-grade.

Definitely a mistake to take this class as a non-engineering major. MATLAB sucks, it is hard and its boring. I look around and see hella ppl fall asleep in lecture. They're all based on online lecture notes, so no need to attend lecture. Midterm is pretty hard, avg was 66%. No need to take this class unless u thoroughly enjoy programming.

I love this guy. Everytime i go to his lecture i can sleep so well. I've never slept so well anywhere else. I woke upa t 2 pm... without an alarm just slept for 14 hours.. then went to his class at 3:30pm and fell asleep. Try to do the homework by yourself. And read All the lecture notes. I mean read ALLLL of them. it is helpful. I aced the midterm

If you went to class you could do fine. It was really easy to fall asleep tho cuz he turns the lights way down. Just don't fall behind cuz then you'll be screwed. He was pretty helpful inside & outside the classroom. Matlab can be lame if you're doing a problem and it keeps giving you an error message. You want to punch the effing screen sometimes.

Never been to the class before. The only time I walked in without knowing and we had a midterm that day. Go to your lab hours. TAs are very helpful. I heve gone only to the labs and never to the lecture. 10/60 meathod really helps. Pulled a C with only 3 hours of reading before final. Midterm score = 23/100! :( LOL still pulled a nice and FAT C!

He's a good teacher and knows the material and knows how to present it. It's true that many people fall asleep in his class, but that's your choice to listen and pay attention or not. If you choose to pay attention and take notes it's not difficult. Use your notes on the cheat sheets he allows for the exams and you'll be fine.

Prof. Larry is the epitome of a great Professor. After my stay in Davis I realised that he was one of the best professors in the Engineering Department. To all those who did not like Prof. Larry, be warned there are many awful professors you have yet to meet in your other Engineering classes.

Firstly, do not buy the $45 recommended book on matlab; Prof. Lagerstrom will offer a course manual with all of the class notes for sale for $20, which is all you will ever need. If you go to class, the homework and tests are pretty straightforward. Be prepared to spend upwards of 3-4 hours on some of the weekly homework assignments, though.

Yes, do not buy the textbook-it's all online. He is monotone, and his lectures are quite dry but he's pretty friendly. His tests have 3-5 parts to each question. He has taught this class for many years. He explains everything very precisely but in doing this, he can make things more confusing. He's hard to understand unless you're the techie type.

Good professor! Lectures are clear and he explains everything well. Only problem is his voice is monotone and tends to put a lot of people to sleep. If you can stay awake, props to you! Hw was easy, but I thought midterm was difficult. Final was fair. Very fair class, a little on easy side. Don't buy books, just software unless you get it cracked.

He is super clear in what he is saying. Just go to lecture and you're fine. He goes over things more than once and the tests are challenging but fair. Do Not buy the book ($50), but do buy or download the lecture notes($20).

Larry is very clear in his lectures. Homework can be pretty challenging, but between going to lecture and looking through examples in the reader it is doable. I recommend buying Matlab so you don't have to spend hours in the lab each week. Also, matlab is boring, but knowing it well can be useful to help solve hw problems in other courses later.

Good professor. Only attended first 2 or 3 classes. If you have any programming background, only value of going to class is learning syntax (which you can learn from the book or the 'help' command in MATLAB). HW not too difficult. Can work with others. MT/Final difficult, but page of notes allowed

The homework is rather difficult at times, but it's very easy to get help with it. The midterm and final were rather difficult, and it's important either you're a genius or that your notes are VERY good in order to get a good grade. Know how to do the homework problems.

Larry is a decent professor. He is clear in class. So if you go, you will understand everything. The sample scripts are useful when doing the homework. I never went to discussion. But going to lectures helps.

I had him for ENG6 and took his class again in ENG 17. He's one of the best prof. I've had. Fair grader. Reasonable amount of homework. Exams are hard but doable.

Very helpful. It is certainly possible to get an a in his class. Study the lecture notes very carefully, put the hw problems and sample scripts on your cheat sheet, and go to office hours if you dont understand something. The midterm catches people off guard, but if you do well on the final he will only make the midterm worth 10%

Lagerstrom is a solid prof. He can be boring at times, but his lectures are clear, grading is fair, and tests are reasonable. He is also helpful in class and OH. He made circuits a halfway enjoyable class. Take ENG17 with him if you can!

Pretty cool class. Ended up getting a B+ w/o too much work, could have gotten an A easily if i tried harder. The lectures seem to drag on because he would go into detail about topics that i found easy, but could be nice for people who are lost. Disc not mandatory, and my TA (swedish woman) was pretty hot. I recommend getting matlab on your computer

Dr. Lagerstrom is funny and personable, if a little long-winded. I never even had to go to this class to get an A. All lectures and assignments are done exclusively online. Optional labs and discussions for students who need extra help. Recommend getting MATLAB for your personal computer, if you have the cash to spare.

Great course and teacher. I rarely went to lecture and mostly learned from the reader and from classmates in lab. Earning a B is certainly doable (especially for the CS kids); an A is definitely in reach if you try a little harder. Do well on the final and the midterm gets shrunk to only 10% of your grade. Recommended!

Entire course is available on DVD that he provides and online. Course is meant to be done at home, except for the midterm and final. Very easy class, especially with one pg of notes for the midterm and 2 for the final. He is very thorough on clips and powerpoint lectures, and homework is easy. Get your own copy of MATLAB!
