This class is so boring. He makes us sit in seating chart and it's a big lecture hall. He goes off topic alot and puts in his own political opinion alot. He doesn't prepare well for the tests.
BORING!!! Not helpful at all!
He Sucks! I never went to class because i hated him so much, not going to that class was worth the "F" i got.
Easy if you go to class and study. Always reviews tests which is awsome.
Tests are hard, but if you go to the review sections then you'll be ok. It's interesting to hear him make remarks about the media and the gov't.
Nice teacher; class can be hard if you don't show up and don't study. IF you do what he says and talk to the TAs than easy A. Not a class for slackers.
Not a good professor. Teaching skills are horrible. Boring lectures and doesn't explain much but expects you to know everything for exams.
Worst teacher i have ever had. He is super boring and laughs at his own stupid jokes. Very monotone and does not help you at all. Cuts you off while you are speaking. Tries too hard to be a "cool teacher." also balding and i think he wears women
If i were to ever enroll in this guy's class again, there would have to be 2 open seats. One for me and one for the guy holding a gun to my head.

he was very through in lecture i thought, and also well preped. not much work, but some group work was challenging- he also has a wide range of experience to draw on- in my view, one of the better professors in poli sci
Very good class...I recommend it to everyone, this class gives you a hands on learning expereience. NOt easy but worth it.
his constant references to the good old days in someplace called "grr ting gen" were bizarre
good class, you learn a lot. you have to go to class, but the grading is fair. wish i knew the first exam was from the makers of the book, not the class notes though. he's interesting and an excellent teacher, very knowledgeable

If a haircut were equivalent to brainpower, then his toupee would be inducted into the baseball hall of fame. Confusing statement? Only a fraction of the befuddlement awaiting you if you wander into Larry's classroom. Good luck!
Excellent teacher as far as knowledge and intelligence. He is the kind of guy who explains alot of interesting aspects, but if you don't understand him or are interested by the first lecture than its not the class for you.
Lectures and videos can be interesting at times. Midterms fairly difficult because they do not go along well with the lectures. Take another poli sci teacher if you want an easier A.
This teacher was very thorough on lectures yet the first test we took was strictly from the text book which was a set back, but he gave out a lot of extra credit to catch up on the end. His study guides were pretty straight forward after the first test. This class was enjoyable and pretty easy.
ok these other people below me are BS... he is an awesome teacher and its a fun class. EVERYTHING you need to know for the tests are on the study guides... so study the stuff on the study guide and you'll be fine.
Awesome teacher! I loved going to class. He is really engaging and the material is straight forward. He throws no surprises and is always available if you have questions. He is big on attendance and make sure he knows who you are. He always gives you study guides and there are no new surprises on the examine. Great Great teacher!!!
Easy easy class. Basically pay attention, and go to class, and you are guaranteed to pass. Quizes are simple, and the exams were essays, that were graded very generously by TAs. Lectures were fun and interesting. We watched the Daly Show often, and talked about it. cool class.
the teacher is nice..however the materials are hard.. and his tests are hard!! i'm takin this class in the summer rite now.. so yea.. there's not enuff time to study-.- if u want to take him.. don't take him in the summer! take him in the fall or spring n if u really wanted to take it in the summer.take it w. another teacher!
Excellent teacher! He bring in more than the topic for the class into the discussion, and he is a very fascinating individual. As long as you take notes during class, you will be good on the quizzes. I loved being part of the class and finding out new stuff everyday.
One of the best professors at the University. He really made this class enjoyable and very interesting. He is also super knowledgeable about the subject matter. You should be able to easily get an 'A' with a little bit of effort.
I took him for a summer class last year--he was pretty cool and laid back. I didn't mind waking up early to be there at 9 (it was only a 3 week class). The material was mildly interesting--this is a big compliment as I am not into poli sci. Overall, I'd recommend him for p/sc 100.
Very helpful and easy. Does not take roll, does not demand too much from the readings. Few assignments, easy grader... if you know the content. Lectures are awesome, extremly knowledgable. If you do not pass this class, then you have serious issues.
Very relaxed class. We would discuss current international events. Tests had very little to do with lecture. Almost all questions were from book. Two short papers and five online quizes were also assigned. Overall it was a pretty easy class. Lots of assignments, but not too difficult. Would recommend him again.
i got an F in all of my test but with extra credit and the online test i pulled a B never read never took notes... take this class!!!!
Very full of himself and has his pets. If you are not one of them, you have to work harder for your grade. He relies on materials from his other profs at UCSB. He can be interesting at times when discussing Int'l law and space but don't listen to his career adv. He said I would never go beyond BA and I've been accepted to Havard for grad study.
fantastic professor. the only reason someone wouldn't like him is because they clearly don't understand the subject and/or didn't do well in his course. quite intelligent and knowledgeable about International Relations...best at LB state thus far.
He was really great for this class. It was easy and lots of fun. I especially enjoyed discussions of current events. Martinez is a very nice guy and this course was a very easy "A" for me.
he is a very intelligent and knowledgable professor. the class was easy, only grades you on 3 OPEN BOOK tests and an issue brief which is only 2 pages. most of the class was spent on talking about current events in the world and their impacts. definate recommendation.
Difficult bec. he is arrogant, and will quickly treat you like a child. You must be prepared to read EVERY requirement or course outline he hands out, word for word and then memorize it. If you have any problems, too bad, expect him to say "it was written down." dissapointment. ruined an exciting class.
Great teacher. Talks very fast, which can make him hard to follow. Assignments were challenging, but doable. Tons of reading, you'll need glasses after this class. I'd take him for another class.
Knows the subject like the back of his hand. But, can be a bit pompous at times. Assingments are challenging but if you prepare and dont wait till the last second you'll be rewarded. no surprises on the exams, he lets you know exactly what to expect.
Challenging to say the least. Int Law though so what do you expect!? 2x papers 2 pg max 2x exams 1 of which was take home (but take home doesn't meen its easy!) very knowlegeable and you should stop him when he goes too fast... because he will.
Great teacher. He's full of enthusiasm and energy. Warning: he talks very fast. You have to slow him down, otherwise you can't keep up with him. Read the material and have thought about it before class and you'll do okay. Don't do that and you'll struggle.
He knows his stuff but the work load for this under division class can be long and boring. Must know all countries and capitals. Must know all the readings. Must worship his international relationship knowledge. I got a B but had to put some effort into the class, most people got C's. Good guy if he wasn't grading me.
This teacher knows his subject! There's two test and Two essays! Essays are easy just make sure to include what he wants and you'll do fine! Test were hard! He was using a new book though! If you don't read the book tests will be hard! No reviews for test!
He's an arrogant Dr. but very knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches. doesn't really use the textbooks. test are derived mainly from lectures. assigns two 2 page single spaced essays, 2 tests that are a mix between multi choice and in class essay. VERY HARD GRADER (unless you are in his MUN class)
very difficult to get an A unless you took his MUN class first. (he plays favorites for those students) take him if you want a challenge but only if you dont mind your GPA getting hurt for it.
Dr. Martinez is great! You must do the readings or you cannot succeed, however his method of instruction is such that you will be interested in the material.
His class is not hard at all, i mean as long as you pay attention and not drift off i dont think its too hard to get an A. I bought both books and honestly i probably read about 2 pages all together, not becasue i didnt want to, but i didnt have time cause of work. But, i payed close attention to all his lectures and got an A in the class.
He doesn't take attendance, but you really should go to class because he gets his ideas for the exams from in class lectures. The first essay is hard, but he's willing to help you out if you ask after class or during his office hours. SERIOUSLY ask him for help if you need it! It helps if you get on his good side.
Dr. Martinez is a solid teacher. He's extremely well-informed, challenging, flexible, interesting, personable, and fun. Int'l Law is pretty tough stuff, so go to class and pay attention. Ask questions and you'll get answers. Good students who do the work and are interested in the subject matter should take Dr. Martinez's classes.
International law is an interesting class that helps give you a better grasp on how the world works. Martinez is a tad bit arrogant but intelligent and a great professor regardless. If you are striving for an A be prepared to spend a lot of time for the papers and work in groups to ease the load. 2 essays and 1 test worth 33% each. I recommend him.
ALright. Dr. Martinez is brilliant, but his exams are pretty rough. Probably because I took this class during summer, with a hybrid 391 class. Look, If you take him during fall or spring, you'll do fine, possible A. Summer is a BIG NO NO! Too much info, too little time. He lectures the whole 3 hours. I got 88% so an A is possible. But too much info
He's a great professor! He knows what he's talking about, extremely well versed and knowledgeable. His exams aren't easy, but they're not hard if you've done the reading and attended lectures. For 218, by the end of the semester you'll have every country's location and capital memorized (wasn't that hard, actually) which is cool.
I enjoyed this class. Really good professor, friendly, knowledgeable, accessible. Tests are not hard, but you won't do well if you don't go to class or read sometimes; deviates from the syllabus at times, welcomes questions. 40% of the tests are memorizing geography but it's easier than you think. 2 midterms, a two page paper, and a final.
His is class is pretty boring, but I've never missed a day. He gives a study guide before a test & whatever is on the study guide, it will be on the test. His essay exams are easy, but his multiple exams are really hard. He gives a extra credit every time he misses class. He curves the exams as well.
Very knowledgeable professor and occasionally throws some good jokes. Attendance is mandatory in order to take notes. Grade consists of 2 midterms, an assignment, & final. Both midterms were essays except the 2nd one had m/c. Curves the test grades and gives good ec opportunities. So far I have an 86! I never read except for skimming thru summaries
Before the final, I had an A in his class, after the final I got a C. His final was extremely hard.
If you don't want to attend lectures and learn from reading straight out of the book, this class is for you. More than half the students don't show up because the lectures are useless for the exams. On the positive, He curves generously and gives you a lot of extra credit points. I had an A and the final dropped me to a C With the curve, I got a B
Great teacher, really into what he teachers, i thought his classes was pretty funny because he reminds my of my dad getting a new cell and being so excited to play with it, if you want to do really well make sure he remembers your name
Attendance is not mandatory. His lectures are pointless for tests. In order to do well in the class, you need to keep up with the readings and basically teach yourself. The essays on the midterms are not too bad, but the MC section is ridiculously hard. He curves tests because everyone does so bad.
By far my favorite professor in the POSC Department! We have a great staff, but Martinez takes the gold.
Take him for the International Relations class; it's a very straightforward and helpful class for poli sci majors. However, the Cyberspace class is disorganized and assumes that you already have a firm grasp of terms and concepts pertaining to communication systems. He's pretty full of himself but he doesn't put people down.
Dr. Martinez is a tough grader and may also seem very subjective. If you want an A in the class, its essential to get on his good side, try joining Model UN. Tests are pretty tough however he was very generous on the final exam and gave everyone bonus points.
Absolutely hated this class. Professor's lectures are boring and have nothing to do with what's on the tests. The three tests are difficult (esp. multiple choice). My advice - get on the TA's good side and read the chapters he assigns. Or take someone else.
initially was put off because of his Model-UN students favoritism. apart from that, took him for international law and was amazed by the subject. mostly learned from the book. Dr M really isnt good responding to emails. alot of case studies (using the IRAQ method). the final ate me alive since he didnt teach much. passable, but avoid if you can
Awful teacher. His test are as if its a 400 level class. Class content is significantly different to what he test you on. He can be rude at times. Just make your life easier and take it with another professor.
Awesome Professor. Super knowledgeable, approachable, funny.... great upper division courses on technology and international law. Highly recommend for upper division poli sci.
Lectures were not helpful, test were hard. He structures the course to be a 400, 4 unit course. He should not teach this class. His examples during the lecture generalizes his political views. If you don't want to get screwed take it with someone else.
Not only is this class extremely hard it is not informative. Prof often goes off on unrelated tangents. Tests are hard and do not relate to lecture. The books are long boring and hard to understand. I have a B right now but the work involved is unnecessarily demanding. A requirement of this class is to attend and report on a city hall meeting.
If you are looking to take this class as an easy GE class, find another professor. If you are considering PoSc as a major this class is just for you.Prof.M is genuinely passionate and has divulged his life into the political arena,he has vast knowledge and would be a vital contact to students trying to expand their network.3exams+1Project=400pts
I loved this course! This was a major factor in me changing my major. He is weirdly funny. His test are based on both the book and his lectures. He moves through his powerpoint slides very quickly however he post reduced versions on beachboard for you to follow along. Always available in office hours. You definitely can pull an A!
Very difficult class
Even though I personally did well, this is not the class for someone who is looking for an easy GE or if you really depend on the teacher to understand things. Class time was useless to me.All I did was to read the book and do the study guide. Luckily if he feels that the class deserves it, he'll give major extra credit. The TAs aren't great either
Really hard class. There were 3 test. The final was cumulative and online. 100 questions in 1hr and 20 mins. The only thing that helped me was the 50 pts from his social contract. With the social contract you can not walk in late or leave early.
Sometimes the lectures can be boring but the class it easy to pass. Ten question weekly quizzes, 3 midterms, and a final. As long as you have the books to look up key terms you will pass.
I absolutely hate history and government classes, but this class was totally doable. He was really great, even with the dry (at least to me) topics. He puts his lecture slides on beachboard, gives study guides for exams, and has an online final. Pretty easy A if you're willing to put in some effort, but not too bad. :)
He is a great person and wants the best for all of his students. Attendance was not mandatory. Textbooks are optional but may be useful to study from. He assigns weekly quizzes and drops two of the ones you scored lowest one. There are three exams that he refers to as midterms and then a cumulative final. Electronics are also not allowed.
Not the best professor I've taken, but not the worse either. Still managed to get an A in the class. There is a quiz every week and 3 "midterms" throughout the class. The final was accumulative. Every quiz and exam was done online, so you can use notes, books, internet and friends. He knows what he's talking about. Maybe he just wasn't my style.
Professor Martinez is decent, he covered broad topics in class that later became essential test questions so if you weren't paying attention you're out of luck. Read the textbook chapters and don't skim through! Overall you have to really work for the high grade.
If you do end up taking this course with Martinez, my best advice is to just not show up. The only reason to is because he gives weekend quizzes but most can be answered online or with common sense. He drops the lowest 2 anyway. Do the study guides for the exams. They'll save your grade.
Quizes every week. 10 questions you have 10 minutes. It's kind of a hassle because some questions are lecture based some are reading. If you aren't good at google-fu I recommend going to the classes. If you have no interest in polisci don't take this class. It just makes it more difficult to care and lowers your desire to work for a good grade.
Yet another professor that rambles and does not make sense during lectures. He makes jokes that are funny but I don't know how they correspond to class. We have a lot of quizzes and midterms. They are tough! I barely ended up passing!
You definitely learn a lot, even in topics that have nothing to do about politics. Quizzes are every week and easy to pass even if you don't do the reading. Midterms are tough. A very knowledgeable person, though, and it's clear he knows what he's talking about.
Good teacher. Lectures a little long but are really interesting. No quizzes, but 3 midterms and 1 final. Each midterm has 40-50 mult. choice questions, and one 24-hour take-home essay. Each exam is fairly easy if you pay attention at least 80% of the time in class, and complete the study guides. I don't like POSC, but was motivated by him to learn.
Literally worst person ever. He spends all class not talking about anything that will be on the test then releases the study guide days before the test where you have to go out and teach yourself. He barely even shows up for class. But expects you to just know everything. His powerpoints suck and doesn't provide any information. Stay away.
He really wants you to understand the material, even if it won't be on the exam. He'll spend a long time on a slide of the powerpoint but it won't be on the exam. He always asks if anyone had any questions before he begins his lecture. The study guide will have a list of topics that will be on the exam. Final is compilation of previous midterms.
He is a great person. His POSC100 class is based on three midterms and a final. Most of the material comes from his lectures. I am not a fan of politics which is why it was difficult for me to pay attention. He does give out study guides that are very helpful for the test. I don't recommend you miss any midterms because the makeup is 10page paper
Interesting lectures. I learnt a lot. Got me interested in politics. I would highly recommend this teacher. 3 quizzes, 3 papers, 1 final exam and an extra credit project.
Took POSC 199 in the summer. We had 4 class sessions for 4 hours, with a quiz on the assigned readings at the end of each session. The quizzes are hard, tricky, and refer to specific material from the readings. Prof. Martinez is a really cool and funny guy. He does ramble on and get off-topic often, but he appreciates the in-class participation.
He's funny and really does care about the subject he's teaching and tries to make it interesting (but fails a bit). All tests and papers are extremely dependent on the book and he grades under the assumption that you've read it like 3 times over and over. His lectures are a bit boring and super complicated, you don't retain much. Hard grader too...
Professor Martinez is a nice guy, when he does show up to class. But when he lectures, he goes in depth of things irrelevant to the exams. There are 3 midterms (multiple choice and take-home essay) and a cumulative final. The extra credit was what brought my grade up. Beware, this is not an easy GE class. Stay away or good luck.
no homework/extra credit offered/lectures are posted/he goes off topic frequently/he knows what he's talking about/willing to guide and help you/always asks if students have any questions from reading/textbook will help you with exams/often times lecture based exam questions/hard to stay awake/take home essay same night as exam days/nice guy
took this class over the summer. 4 days, 10 chapters with 2 or 3 chapter readings per day. quiz due every night. If you are not willing to actively read so much per day, do not take this class over the summer. The quiz questions are from very specific material, so you MUST read. Professor Martinez is overall very interesting and approachable!!!
Larry is very passionate about what he teaches, but unfortunately he does not always stay on topic when lecturing. A lot of times he goes off on tangents and things become confusing very quickly. Also, there is readings every week and if you don't read, you won't pass the tests. (coming from someone who usually always passes without reading)
Lectures seem to only touch on a couple of things on the test which is nothing when we have 3 midterms and an accumulative final, all of which are 50 questions. If you don't have prior knowledge, it's difficult to pass. There's an extra credit, highly recommend you take advantage of that. Martinez is intelligent however his teaching is not ideal.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Professor teaches this 100 GE class as if students were experts. Super hard to understand.
This was by far one of my more difficult GE's of the semester. His lectures tend to get really boring and he spends a big portion of his time lecturing on one slide. His GA's have graded the midterm papers and they were pretty tough graders as well. Your grades are based on 3 midterm papers, your top 5 scores on globalyceum (online), and 50 mc.
dont take this class. lectures are long and boring. goes off topic all the time and GAs grade essays as if us undergrads taking it for a GE were graduate political science experts.
The lectures will put you to sleep. He tends to go off on tangents so be ready for that. The text book is mostly supplemental, I hardly opened it at all throughout the semester. The most important resource is the Globalyceum access code you need to buy. He doesnt make it effortlessly easy but the class isnt difficult.
He gives really dense lectures and there are weekly quizzes. He gives 3 research papers and a multiple choice test which are fairly difficult. He did bump my grade at the end of the semester though. You can get the A if you understand whats going on
Hardest class Ive ever taken. Lectures are too long and boring. Mostly goes off topic and half of the time the class is on hold because theres always something wrong with the technology he uses. The GAs are tough graders and try their best to help but at the end it doesnt help much.
FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT DECIDED WHICH POLITICAL SCIENCE CLASS TO TAKE, I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. THIS CLASS WAS BY FAR THE WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. I JUST WANT OTHERS TO BE WARNED AND AWARE THAT THIS COURSE IS NOT EASY. LARRY WAS A GREAT PERSON, BUT NOT SUITABLE FOR TEACHING A 100 CLASS. I HOPE THIS HELPS.
Not a great prof. Lectures go on many unrelated tangents. Gets offended easily and not very tolerant of political views outside of his own. Threatened to fail students who left class early, made TA's block doors. Obviously, a very knowledgable and smart man, just not fit to teach a lower div GE class.
Hes terrible!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM. You won't pass unless you already understand political science. Be prepared to teach yourself and just read the book. Showing up won't even matter since he just goes on irrelevant tangents . He is rude if you get a wrong answer he shuts you down so you become discouraged and don't want to speak up again.
He is pretty chill and he just speaks facts, both related and unrelated. His tangents happen every class but it's interesting for the most part. You really only have to show up for review days and to take the essay tests, other than that just read the book and it's doable.
Wonderful professor, really enjoys what he teaches; difficulty is easy if you are familiar w/ the topic, if not def read the textbook and pay attention to lecture, exam/quiz answers are discussed in lecture so take good notes; bare min: ctrl + F all your answers from the 2 textbooks, final exam is all the quizzes combined so make a doc for answers
Honestly a joke of a class and a joke of a professor. Doesn't attend office hours and is condisending and has very niche understatnding of the world. He's only successful do to him being very smart in an area that no one has any idea about space law. Don't take him he talks off subject and rambles every lecture.
I bought both textbooks but never read them. as long as you pay attention in lecture you will be good. there are weekly quizzes online (12 throughout the semester but only the 5 highest scores count towards your grade). I suggest going to office hours of the TA the day of midterms which help alotttt.
His grading is based on 3 exams, the final, and 12 (only 9 scores count) online quizzes. The quiz answers can mostly be found in the textbook, online, or from the last 5 minutes of his lecture. His lectures are long and boring but he talks extremely fast and has a tendency to stray off-topic a majority of the time. GO TO TA OFFICE HOURS!!!
I think Professor Martinez was okay. I got a B overall, but I got A's on all my work except the final. I ended up with an 89%, but if you participate a lot he says he'd bump your grade up if, at a border, I didn't participate so. His lectures are pretty boring and I had difficulty staying awake, he's just average I guess.
