Excelent Professor, keeps you on your toes and working hard

He is VERY boring. Also, if you are interested in world history, note that for Marvin World=France, Germany, and UK. If you want to get a glimpse into the wider world take Amy Jo!!!
A truly knowledgeable and passionate prof. Very interesting classes!
There were two tests with about 200 pages of notes to study and absolutley no study guide or even clue of what was important. He graded really hard on the essays as well. If you're just lookin for a gen-ed TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
While Dr. Marvin's class was difficult, his lectures were by far the best I've had at Berry. He not only adds humor and topicalness by relating it to modern-day lifestyles, but he asks for more thought out of his students that other profs fluff off.
He has a serious Napoleonic complex
I really enjoyed his class, it was difficult but i really really got alot out of it
i think he is a great teacher, but he has too many lectures and needs to add some hands on projects.
His class is very hard, but so are most of the history classes at Berry. He is, however, very intelligent and very helpful if you go to him and ask for help. He's really fair, you've just got to study A LOT.
i enjoy his class and i kinda have to because i'm a history major, hard but good
If you like history, you'll like this class. He makes it at least somewhat applicable to the way we live today, and always asks for input from students. The class discussions over the reading were gernrally pretty interesting too.
Best lecturer at berry. Loves war and the west, but he states that on the first day. Exact opposite of Amy Jo, except the difficulty. 125 pages of notes. Difficulty tests, but worthwhhile course.
Napoleonic complex? Yes. Good professor? Yes. My experience is that his style discourages discussion, may be wrong for other classes though. I wouldn't recommend Film as His. Fun to watch the films, but it prob won't be what u thnk. rent them ins
Knows more about history than God. Can be intimidating, but trust me, he is a nice, helpful guy if you are willing to brave entering his office.

His tests might have been hard, and my term paper might have looked like it was bleeding, but Marvin is an excellent professor with an awesome sense of humor that keeps you awake!
Dr. Marvin is the most difficult teacher I have ever had (Got an A in Jo's class) but he is also the best. He grades his papers very hard but with good reason, after a semester with him you will either know everything or have failed and will cry.
I thought that his class, like Atkins, was wonderful and very interesting. He loves war and guts... I felt like I studied and got the grade I deserved...it's not impossible to make an A in his class!!!
Great history professor. Pretty hard class, but I learned so much!!!
knows his stuff...
WONDERFUL PROFESSOR. I LOVED HIS CLASS!
Dr. Marvin is awesome. This class rocks so far!!
I love Dr. Marvin. He is so nice and he really knows what he is talking about. He also always throws in fun stories to go along with the lecture to make it more intersting. Plus he is just adorable.
A fair prof who knows his stuff. His tests didn't seem hard to me at all. Pay attention to the lectures and use your brain, it's pretty simple.
This prof is hard, but you learn so much form his class. You do have to work for your grade, but it is a fun class that even x-history majors love.
Very smart and clear in teaching. Lets you know where you stand and is really fair.
Don't forget to staple your paper!
this guy knows a whole lot about history, but he doesnt have a clue what technique one would use to win the super bowl in the fourth quarter with 45 sec left on the clock. He needs to get his rubles straight!
Plan on reading, and he knows if you don't. Great professor if you want to learn. Must work for your grade.
He likes war and staples, and so do I!
Dr. Marvin is a great professor. He's clear when giving his information, not just in lecture, but when it comes to what he wants when it comes to papers/book reviews/synopsis. He was my advisor throughout my time at Berry and I graduated with a major in
Mr. Marvin is a hard teacher!! I asked him what I could do to get a good grade and even wrote my paper for him to read it before we had to turn it in.......and I still got a C in the class.
Marvin truly cares about his students and is always helpful. If you want to make a good grade, just study your notes.
Marvin's like a cute little Budda. He is funny, smart, and knows more about history than anyone I know. Not impossible to make an A, just work like your life depended on it.
Good teacher, but this class is definitely not easy. Requires lots of studying. Nice guy though, and will help you out if you need it.
Take all the lecture notes and you will make an A
Do not take this class if you are not ready for essay tests! He loves detail and grades strict. He is willing to work with you HOWEVER the class is still rough!

Very interesting class and very helpful if pursuing graduate school. He is hard but fair. I loved his classes.
Dr. Marvin is very difficult, but fair. He knows his stuff and is immune to b.s. Not crazy about his tests, but class definately held my interest. Go to class! He'll cut your grade otherwise. A's are few and far between. Take him to learn, not a grade
Yes, like everyone says, he REALLY REALLY knows what he's talking about, and he is helpful when you ask. BUT, every day consisted of 1 hr of frantically trying to write everything he said, I took an average of 2 pages of notes front and back per day. He is so full of himself its disgusting. And his tests: pure essay. watch out.
Excellent lecturer who keeps you engaged, but expects you to know everything from your billion pages of notes and apply all of it to your essay tests. Not the most compassionate person either.
Very passionate teacher, however he expects the students to retain so much information that everything starts to blur together.
Dr. Marvin is very passionate and engaging, but his class can shoot down your GPA if you are only taking it for a Gen. Ed. He gives all essay tests, and he grades hard. This is a history major class for sure.
Good teacher if he would just tell you what to study/let you see his outlines after class. If history isn't your major, don't take the class. Shot my GPA waaaay down. Essay test were so hard I cried after every one.
Dr. Marvin is perhaps the hardest professor at Berry, but the knowledge and historical awareness you gain from his lectures is remarkable and totally worth work. There's not any homework other than reading. He assigns two books (under 200 pages each). Two tests plus a final. One paper on one of the books you read. Take his classes! You learn a ton!
worst teacher i have ever had, tests are impossible you are doomed, i feel bad for you if you have him
Marvin is a great professor to take if you want to challenge yourself. However, he doesn't believe in abosolute morality or absolute truth, so be prepared for statements which contradict a Biblical worldview.
Write down everything he says. What I did to study was write down everything about one particular topic on a flash card and memorize it. He expects you to write well and be knowledgeable about the topics.
Good lectures. Takes out personal problems on students and seriously discourages participation in class. Don't trip his wires or he'll take you down. Discussions of texts in class were extremely pedantic and didactic, but the lectures themselves were great of course, as long as you're satisfied with meat and potatoes history without many frameworks
Personally, I like the man a lot. He's an extremely intelligent and kind man. Unfortunately, the class itself was very difficult. Tests are all essays and his grading is rough. Lecture is interesting though. I wouldn't recommend this class unless you are a History major. I got a D+. In a history class. Like, come on. Not cool
Was a physics major and had him 13 years ago; grad school in physics. Nonetheless, Marvin is probably the best lecturer I ever had in any subject--college or grad school. Keys to earning A: write down everything, ask good questions, then type your notes soon for better retention. Study well, and connect main ideas and stress importance on tests.
He is very intelligent, knows his stuff almost too well, and expects you to know it too. I studied for hours and hours before every test, and never made higher than a low C. He says that Cs are As and As are impossible. He will give you feedback if you make an effort to see him, but it won't guarantee a better grade. Don't take unless you have to.
Not an easy course. All essay exams, would not recommend just for a gen ed credit
Do not take him. He tells you up front that you will make a C. You can study all you want and think you will be the one to get a B. Nope. Just a dead GPA.
The class itself taught me a lot about history, but there in basically no chance of you making any higher than a C. It's almost impossible. The tests are essay only with no prior knowledge as to what you'll be writing about.
Will definitely sit down with you and go over your tests with you, and spend a good amount of time doing so. Also very willing to read your paper before it is due. Tests are all essay and very hard because you will have a ridiculous amount of notes to study.
Great teacher come ready to work
The lectures are hit or miss, sometimes he read straight from the textbook and sometimes he came up with unique insights and info you would never find if you missed class. He has his own personal standards when it comes to essay writing, so be prepared to improve a lot after the first exam. It is history, so study, study, study!
Attend every lecture, write down every word in lecture, rewrite every word for the tests and you'll get an A. It's not that hard once you get the hang of it because he gives lectures like stories so everything follows logically. You'll learn more history than you could've imagined if you pay attention and study. Gives fantastic feedback on essays.
Definitely take him if you want to learn a thing or two. He really REALLY knows his stuff and can hold your attention even if you're not into history (like myself). I wasn't that pleased with my final grade, but I enjoyed the course regardless.
This is arguably the best professor at Berry College. His expectations are very clear. If you pay close attention to little details in your papers, you can score highly. It is very hard to make an A though. His lectures are engaging and easy to follow. He even gives you a handout that helps you follow along with each section and subsection.
Dr. Marvin will give you a run for your money and you will work harder than you probably ever have before- you have to take great notes, talk in class, and know your stuff. He's very intelligent and you'll learn a lot, but you'll also have to work your tail off to make even a B-. Looking for learning? Take this. Looking for a good grade? Don't.
Dr. Marvin wants his students to learn how to be real-deal historians in his class. I felt like I was for once really engaged in learning actual history and its purpose today. Dr. Marvin has high standards for his tests; be in the class to learn, not just to pass, and you'll do fine. Show what you know!
Dr. Marvin is one of THE most educated professors I have ever experienced, but he is an extremely tough grader. I've never heard of anyone getting above a B in the class, and that's after spending hours upon hours studying. However, if you want to learn and aren't particular about your grade, he is a great choice.
Dr. Marvin is one of the smartest professors at Berry College. He is very engaging with his lectures. I look forward to his class everyday. He is a super tough grader. You will NOT make an A. No matter how hard you try, an A isn't possible. Do NOT get on your phone/laptop/tablet. He takes points off your final grade if you're on it.
Extremely difficult grader. His class was interesting, but to me it's just not worth it to take a class from him
Separate the teacher from your grades. He knows his stuff, but hes a tough grader. Know how to write essays. If you genuinely like history then take the class, but your gpa wont thank you.
He knows his stuff. Hell stand there and spout information, the thing is he expects you to do so as well. His tests are a series of essays where you need to know names and dates. 100% lecture from an outline. You have to put in work to just get a c.
If you want your GPA to be murdered, feel free to take his class. He knows his stuff, but he is condescending and the last thing he wants is for you to succeed. I had all A's until I got to his class where he told us all that the best we could hope for on exams was a C. He's an extremely difficult grader and he doesn't teach, just lectures nonstop.
It's going to be really hard for you to get a good grade, but he really does love the subject and he's very enthusiastic. If you love history you'll love this class, but it might not be worth it if you're just taking this for the credits.
I loved this man as a lecturer, he's the person who has taught me the most at Berry. He's an extremely harsh grader though, and he expects a lot out of you. I enjoyed his class, but I can't deny that it took a decent amount of effort to maintain a B. He gives lots of feedback though, and he's always accessible through office hours for clarification
Dr. Marvin is an incredible teacher, but you don't take his classes to keep your GPA up. He is tough regarding grading and really makes you work for it. I haven't heard of one person to leave his class with an A. Low B's and C's are common. He is really personable and cares about both the students and the material he teaches.
From the very first week of the semester, I knew I shouldve dropped this class. I decided to give it a good try, though. I studied for full days for the tests and still did not do well. The lectures have way too much information packed in. A half second of zoning out and you may miss something on the tests. If youre a bad test taker, you wont pass
RIP GPA if you take this class
Dr. Marvin is an extremely smart, well-read professor, and this class was easily one of my favorites. His lectures are engaging, and he genuinely cares about how his students are doing. However, tests and essays are grueling, as Dr. Marvin is an extremely hard grader. Fortunately, he can always be accessed outside of class or through email.
Lectures are all spoken, lots of dates and info to remember, and nothing besides your own notes to help you. Tests: one essay, three short answers; 55 minutes. Good luck.
If you are a History major, you want to take this class. He is very knowledgeable and is very specific. If you are not a history major, it will be very hard for you to get a good grade in this class. Tests are written essays and there are only 5 grades.
Dr. Marvin is one of the BEST professors at Berry. Be prepared to read and write, but that's what you do in history. He is a tough grader, but he grades fairly and quickly. You get the grade you deserve. Dr. Marvin is always available to give feedback and to talk outside of class and values interactions with his students. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Larry Marvin is an amazing person. He can be seen around the campus frequently and always has a bright attitude. Larry Marvin in the classroom is very different. During the one class I had with him 85% of the classes were him lecturing for most if not all of the class MUCH faster than you could take notes. But he did make the content very fun 2 lrn
There are 5 grades for the semester and they are all tests that are free response. There is no textbook and Marvin is an extremely hard grader. I ended up taking over 3 pages of notes every class and continued to miss important dates and facts. Do not take him if you can. If not, GOOD LUCK TO YOUR GPA!
It's a HARD class, and he's a harsh grader but he's very passionate and knowledgeable about his subject. Wants students to learn more than what he's just speaking in the lectures
If you aren't interested in history, I probably wouldn't recommend this class. He is known for having very difficult classes. Lectures everyday from start to end of class. Rarely gives an A, expects a lot. He is very smart, kind, and I learned so much taking this course, but if you just need a foundation, I would go elsewhere.
Dr. Marvin is AMAZING and i would take his classes again and again.
He is a very intelligent man and I respect his level of knowledge but he puts too much pressure on his students who take an intro course usually as an underclassman. He has very high expectations for all his written exams and is a very harsh grader for every assignment (only 5) however he does take the time to work with students who come to see him
He's very sweet and educated, however, for an introduction class he has very high expectations of his students & wants them to demonstrate their understanding in a way ONLY he likes. There's only 6 grades in the class and attendance is one. Don't take him if you're not interested in the subject b/c he grades super harshly and your GPA will drop!
Marvin is such an amazing person and is so knowledgeable about the subjects he lectures on. He is a tough grader and expects students to be masters of writing even though it's a foundations class. I've heard of very few people getting A's in his class but it can be done if you put in the work or have a natural talent for history.
He is a very hard grader but is always available to meet in order to discuss where students get confused. You have to be prepared to take detailed notes very fast. Participation, a paper, and tests are the only grades, so be sure to participate and write your paper with enough time for him to be able to check it before submitting it.
Dr. Marvin might be a tough grader, but his feedback is so thorough and precise you can't help but improve your grade in his class. If you miss something in his lectures he is more than willing to clarify if you're willing to ask. Taking his 154 class was the first time I felt like I was truly learning history.
He knows the stuff he teaches and it's obvious that he likes teaching it, but he expects a lot out of you. If you are wanting to take this class and are not a history major or don't have any history interest; don't take it. You will only have about 5 grades, and attendance is one of them. Take at a cautionary from someone who is not a history major
