Definitely an experienced and noteworthy professor. If you pay attention to the lectures, you'll definitely learn things about yourself and others. The papers have very specific criteria and honestly feel a little random, but if you GO TO THE TAs, they'll help you and you can definitely get an A.
AMAZING professor, not boring at all. There were two major papers all semester and getting an A on them is only guaranteed if you go to the TA office hours. That is the only difficult part of the class. Exams include questions like "you're halfway done, mark A for a free point". He makes the tests easy so you do well.
This class was by far my favorite! Dr. Nelson is obviously passionate about his subject and makes each lecture interesting and enjoyable! Only things in the grade book are 3 papers, 4 tests. The papers are very straight forward and the tests are a breeze if you follow his study guides. Take from Larry Nelson! He's inspiring!
Larry Nelson was great! just 3 papers throughout the semester and 3 exams + the final. Pretty easy if you just follow instructions and study the study guide.
Professor Nelson is not very respectful. He cuts off students comments/ thought sharing. He is very approachable either. You need to memorize so much for exams. Hard class, useless memorization.
I LOVE Dr. Nelson! He made my experience absolutely amazing in SFL 210. He relates what he teaches to the gospel beautifully. You HAVE to go to the TA lab for the papers or you will not do well. Tests are fairly easy if you know the study guide and have gone to lecture.
This guy. This guy KNOWS HIS STUFF. His lectures are fantastic & thought-provoking. If you're there for class, you will do better on tests; questions come from his examples in lectures. Comments & discussions are welcomed & it's a safe environment. The only grades are on papers & tests. I got a lot from this class & recommend it to everyone.
Prof. Nelson is a great teacher. I often left class very inspired. His lectures are important to attend because he gives lots of examples in class that show up on the tests. He cares about his students and his TAs are extremely helpful, but the TAs tend to grade hard so make sure to spend time on the essays (a significant part of your grade). Take!
TEST SUPER HEAVY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is a great public speaker! I don't know how nice he really is after lectures though. I don't think he is loving and caring for his students. I emailed him once, but he never responded. He was too cool to be a friendly teacher after class. Two faces!
Professor Nelson is the best professor I've ever had. I would look forward to his lectures every week and think about them all the time. The tests are fine as long as you study for them. The essays are the worst part, but if you meet with a TA you'll do fine. I rarely did the readings and still got an A, but you'll need to book for tests. Mom
Most people either loved or hated Dr. Nelson, and I thought he was great. I looked forward to his lectures each class; I often left class thinking about what we learned. The papers are manageable if you follow the instructions, and tests are also decent if you study well from the study guide he gives out. Would take this class again!
His version of "Eternal Families" was one of the top 3 classes I have ever taken at BYU! He is an amazing teacher, and challenges our stereotypes and preconceptions on much of Mormon Culture. Each class period left me breathless with new thoughts and ideas. Much better than your regular Religion Class version. Definitely recommend!!!
Dr. Nelson is a great teacher and he really knows his stuff. The only grades you'll have for the class are papers and test, so be responsible and prepare for them well and you will do just fine. This class has been so inspiring and I have learned to see the world in such a different light. DEFINITELY TAKE THE CLASS!!
Professor Nelson's Eternal Families class was absolutely amazing. This class combined both LDS Doctrine and Social Science Research together. His intent is to teach Doctrines and Principles so that the students can come up with there own practices. Incredible class and life changing in many ways.
Larry Nelson is one of the few teachers I really really don't like in BYU. He has two faces. He does not care about his student individually, but show his "kindness" in big lectures. He does not answer your questions if he thinks they are not important questions. He is also very disrespectful in class because he cuts off others' comments frequently
I don't know why he has to make this class so hard. He reads from his powerpoint all the time. It is not necessary to attend the lecture, but he tells his life stories in class and we have to know about his life for tests! I won't take his class again.
He makes you work for it. Your grade is based on 3 papers and 3 exams (none are comprehensive, not even the final) Dont get lazy with the papers. I hate writting, Im terrible at it and I got good scores on my 3 papers. They are not bad. This class is 100% worth the effort. Future you will thank you for taking this class.
This class was just phenomenal. I would recommend it to everyone who has the opportunity to take it. The hardest part was making time for all the reading assignments. His lectures are amazing, and you can easily tell how passionate he is about families. If you attend class, and pay attention, the midterm and the final are a breeze.
Professor Nelson is hands-down one of the best professors at BYU. He uses lots of examples that are easy to remember, and his tests are fairly easy. Attendance isn't mandatory but can be valuable if you want to succeed on the tests. You don't need to read the book, but skim before the tests. There are also 3 papers that are easy if you start early.
My all time favorite professor. His lectures are meaningful, informative, spiritual, and memorable. I took this class 3 years ago and still refer to what I learned. I sincerely think this class will make me a better teacher and mom. I almost switched my major because of this class. Tests are hard but fair. The TAs are a major help with papers.
GET READY TO WORK YOUR HEAD OFF
One of the hardest classes in Family classes. His TAs are just graders for him. No help or anything offered. He is a powerful speaker, but not so loving. He complaints about former students and their parents' emails in class too. He seems very strong minded and does not like others' opinions.
Make sure you follow his paper formatting sheet exactly, or he will dock you big time. Other than that, great teacher! I learned a lot that I use every day.
It is a hard class. His TAs don't help with tests or anything. He is not so approachable. I would not take class from him again.
I absolutely loved this class! Dr. Nelson does an amazing job blending religion with social science, because they totally go hand-in-hand. His classes were inspiring and helped me improve my testimony. He definitely knows what he is talking about, and it shows in his lectures. You'll report on whether you did the readings and attended class.
He is very powerful!! I love his testimony and the things he share with students from his calling. However, I don't like you have to know everything on the textbook and what he has in class. Everything you read and hear could be on the test. It is insane.
This class requires some work but it is sooo worth it! Every student should take Human Development from Professor Nelson. His lectures are entertaining, informative, and spiritual. I would take this class again if I could!
I took the 3 credit hour Eternal Families class, which was an incredible class. Dr. Nelson is a great story teller and lecturer. Lots of reading before class to do, and you fill out a reading log and attendance log. Do well on the papers! Gives a helpful study guide for tests.
I loved SFL 200 Eternal Families and Human Development from Brother Nelson. He is clear and concise about what is expected from the beginning of class and cares about his students. I learned a lot from this class. I hope you get a chance to take a class from Brother Nelson. You won't regret it.
Professor Nelson is the best professor I've ever had. He ties the spirit into his lectures wonderfully! I left his class everyday on a spiritual high. He's definitely going to make me a better parent. You must take this class!! Tests and papers aren't that hard, and you don't need to go to lectures to do well on them, but you absolutely should
Dr. Nelson really know what he is talking about. Has interesting personal and professional experience stories to add to his lectures. Very interesting class. Class Structure: assigned readings (not required to do well), class lectures, 3 papers, 4 exams (use the study guide and you'll do great).
Dr. Nelson is the BEST I was so nervous for this class because I heard it was super difficult. Within just a few classes, however, I was obsessed. I have honestly been considering switching my major to human development. I can't image trying to parent without the information we learned. YOU NEED IT! GREAT class, GREAT professor.
Dr. Nelson is AMAZING!!! He requires a lot of textbook reading, but honestly I didn't read the textbook at all and I got by. He is hilarious and down to earth and so real. He taught me so much I would take his class a million times over. All of the papers are graded by TA's and they are really tough graders, so talk with them, follow directions.
He is a great teacher, if you are on the same page as him. He says to come to class "with an open mind" or you won't learn and he means it. Does not take well to those who disagree with his ideas. It is an eye opening course, but also comes off as an egomaniac. I can see why he is respected, though. He's smart.
Dr. Nelson is by far my favorite professor at BYU. I took SFL 200 & 210 from him and I wish he had more classes I could take! Both of classes helped me shift my view on how to be a better parent. He gives study guides for exams and very clear rubrics for essays, and his TAs are always willing to help. It's not hard to get an A. Take his classes!
Dr. Nelson is my favorite professor at BYU. His lectures were AMAZING. He really cares about his students and if you put in some effort you'll do really well. I always tell everyone I know to take his class because he is so good! The readings aren't too bad and his tests are very straightforward. I would definitely take from him again!
I don't like you have to know everything on the textbook and what he has in class. Everything you read and hear could be on the test. It is insane.
Remember everything he says in class, otherwise, its not easy to get an A.
Dr. Nelson literally has brought me to tears because his lectures are SO inspirational. I have never had a professor so engaging and entertaining. You learn so much about life and just how truly beautiful life is in general. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Best professor at BYU! Such a powerful teacher, brings the spirit every time! Attendance is not mandatory but coming to class & paying attention is seriously the best way to prepare for tests. Test are clear and to the point. Follow rubric very carefully for papers! I would take a class from him each semester if he taught more classes.
Dr. Nelson has been my favorite professor!!! You can tell he loves what he teaches and wants all of his students to do well in his class. There's a lot of reading assignments, but you aren't quizzed on them. His lectures are amazing and he makes it fun to go to class! Take this class from Dr. Nelson!!!!!!!
His class is very clear and if you follow the rubric, you'll get an A on all his papers. Tests are heavily based off assigned reading... so do it!
TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Doctor Larry Nelson is by far the BEST professor Ive had! I literally looked forward to having his classes and you learn so much about life!! I left class everytime feeling uplifted and motivated!
I didn't read the textbook, but it would probably be best to. 4 tests and 3 papers. Go to the TA reviews for the papers; they practically write them for you. Dr Nelson is amazing. I leave every class feeling spiritually uplifted. He cares about his students and is very intelligent. I learned so much from this class and recommend it to anyone.
Dr. Nelson is very interesting to listen to. However, he does put his opinions out front and always acts as though he is perfect. I am a feminist and was worried about the class in that aspect, but he handled it very well. There are readings every day and 2 papers, but they are pretty easy as long as you talk to a TA.
Larry is very passionate about family life and is able to seamlessly combine secular and non-secular learning. He is such a good teacher that I am literally taking another class by him next semester. He is great about answering questions and is very approachable. His tests are moderately difficult but are fair and he gives extra credit.
I loved his class and what I learned but I was not a fan of the papers. I got points off because in parts of my paper the TA "didn't like what I talked about." He is a fantastic teacher but I had a TA take points off for things not on the rubric. Use the TA's, go to them so they tell you EXACTLY what they want and you will get an A!
Best teacher for 210 (I had to retake it b/c of papers) and one of the BEST teachers I have ever had! Lectures are fantastic, all slides are online, and he makes things personal even though it's a class of 200+ students--he cares about everyone and lets you know it! Papers suck but are the same for all sections. TAKE THE CLASS FROM HIM!
Dr. Nelson is the best professor I have had. His lectures are incredibly interesting and engaging because of how applicable they are, and because he cares so much about the topic. He doesn't just teach the material, but he really seeks for understanding of important things, even in a large class. More spiritual than a lot of the religion professors
Loved this class! I feel like this class is one of the most valuable classes I have taken at BYU and Professor Nelson is amazing. There are 2 exams and 2 papers that are pretty easy to get an A on. You track your own attendance and reading on the "honor code". I definitely recommend taking this class.
I love Nelson! His lectures were amazing. Tests arent bad if you know the study guide. You have regular reading homework but no quizzes. There are 2 assignments and 2 papers. Great class!
nicest professor ever. if you go to lecture, do the reading, and go to the essay reviews you will get an A. i learned so much and it was so easy. he really cares and is an awesome dude.
I think this class should be mandatory for everyone. And Dr Nelson is the best. He is an entertaining and captivating speaker, is passionate about what he teaches, and is so sweet and respectful. This class was so easy. Just make sure to go to class and take notes because a couple questions on every test have to do with stuff he says in lecture.
Best lecturer I've ever had. Course material is full of awesome knowledge and he gives great advice on how to apply it. This class should be required for everyone. I loved going to his lectures so much that I'm auditing his SFL200 (Eternal Family) class. If you can't take his class, at least show up to his lectures! You won't regret it.
I absolutely loved learning from him! I took Eternal Families and human development from him. He is a brilliant teacher and helps you learn the material while applying helpful information to your life. Though the classes were several hundred large, I have never had a professor cared so much for each individual. Take his class! You wont regret it!
Professor Nelson is amazing. One of the best classes I will ever take. This class is so useful and both spiritually and intellectually enlarging. Assignments are fairly graded and not too difficult. You can listen in class without worrying too much about notes. It is very reading heavy, but I listened to most and that was sufficient for me.
OUTSTANDING!!!! Dr. Nelson's SFL 210 class was one of the best classes I took in college. There is quite a bit of reading but it is manageable. Tests are multiple choice/ true false. The TAs are fabulous... use them to help you with your essays!
The guy drives me crazy. He assumes everyone in his class is a cookie cutter utah mormon with no culture. I felt belittled by his teaching. Every time he says something mildly controversial he prefaces it with "I'm about to say something controversial just trust me just trust me this is controversial" I mean come on just make your point.
Dr. Nelson is so sweet and such a great professor. There are 3 midterms and a final. There are 3 papers, which are kind of long, but for the most part interesting. That is all that goes towards your grade so you need to do well on those 7 things... His lectures are amazing and you can tell he is passionate about human development! Love him!
I love this professor so much I wish I could take this class a million times! Great and engaging lectures, interesting content, and only a few major papers and tests.
Honestly everyone hypes him up a ton and then it's not that great. He is amazing and I love his class, but not as great as everyone says. That being said, he is the kindest dood and actually cares about his students. He really loves what he teaches and helps you develop a love for it too. Great professor, definitely take SFL from him.
Dr. Nelson is the most amazing professor I have had! He cares so much about each student and takes time both in class and out of class to answer any questions anyone has. He is able to teach both secular and non-secular things with care and thoughtfulness. I always leave his class with so much more knowledge and new points of view.
Larry Nelson's class changed my life and I highly recommend taking his class. He is always willing to answer questions, is very funny but also serious when he needs to be during lectures and is just an amazing teacher.
Guys. Take this class! Dr. Nelson is such a good teacher and you can tell he really cares about child development. Even if you don't take this class for credit, take it anyways! The stuff you learn is so valuable for the future. It's not the easiest class, but definitely doable and worth it.
IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE AT BYU TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!! Dr. Nelson is the greatest professor and human and his class is AMAZING!!! I never left class without feeling totally inspired and with a totally new and incredible perspective on life. Lots of reading, but you'll be ok if you just look at key words, etc. Use TAs for papers. Tests aren't too bad.
Oh my gosh. I LOVED PROFESSOR NELSON! People were in tears almost every class period because of how inspirational he is, he's sooo passionate about what he teaches. His study guides are very direct, so if you study, you can easily get an A in this class. I learned so much from him. Open to questions, very helpful.
This class is the best. Prof Nelson makes it SO intriguing and engaging. I have never been so excited to go to class before. Tests are fairly hard, and based greatly on the readings -- but are doable as there is a study guide and there are no trick questions. The papers are fairly easy, especially since the T.A's are incredibly helpful.
Larry Nelson is one of the loves of my life and his lectures are incredibly inspirational and edifying!! He conveys information clearly and is passionate about his work. He is honestly the best professor I've ever had - is really funny, extremely qualified, straightforward, spiritual, and a wonderful deep and critical thinker.
Awesome
I loved this class. Dr. Nelson is one of my favorite professors. His lectures were always inspiring and I learned so much over the course of the semester. I wish everyone was required to take a class from him.
He is a great teacher, if you are taking human development, he is your best option when selecting a professor.
Larry Nelson is an AMAZING professor. This course is a perfect workload and his assignments are made to enhance your understanding. He is so inspirational and teaches his class with such passion. He loves what he does and is so genuine and authentic. I am not exaggerating when I say it that changed my life Do everything you can to take this class.
Larry Nelson is AMAZING. His lectures are phenomenal; he is able to explain material in a hilarious yet clear way with many examples. He cares so deeply about what he is teaching and he loves all of his students. There are three papers (go to the TA paper reviews and you'll get an A pretty easily) and four tests (clear study guides) in the semester
Dr. Larry Nelson is amazing! His lectures are so interesting, and the material is really enjoyable. As long as you go to lectures and do readings, its an easy class. One of the best professors out there!!
This was my first semester at BYU so I'm a little biased when I say that Larry Nelson was the best professor I've had. There are a lot of readings for the class but I just followed the study guides when reading and it made it go faster. His lectures are PHENOMENAL! I think anyone who wants to be a parent one day should be required to take his class
Dr. Nelson gets SO much hype, so I was really looking forward to taking his class. I was sadly let down. His tests make you APPLY what you learn, which was tricky for me. Take notes in class. TA's are really only helpful for the papers. They do not hold reviews before tests. Also the study guide he offers for tests are vague and leave you guessing.
I LOVE LARRY NELSON! No joke, this man is amazing and if you leave BYU without taking one of his classes, you have failed yourself. The material in this course is FASCINATING and applicable to everyone of every major. Such a strong spirit in this class; I cried about half of the time. Please please do yourself a favor and take this class!!
Dr. Nelson is without a doubt the best professor I've ever had at BYU. Take this class and you will not regret it! He handles even the most difficult subjects with compassion and openness. Don't be afraid of the extra credit hour, it doesn't add much work (I've had harder 2-credit religion classes) but adds a lot to the experience. TAKE THIS CLASS
Larry gives amazing lectures and handles tough topics really well. He wants you to do well. I would take his class again. I was slightly disappointed by how vague the test review paper was in comparison to the actual test. Some of his TAs grade papers leniently and some will tank your grade for minor details. Take the papers seriously. Great class!
Dr. Nelson is AMAZING!! I loved this class because of him! Definitely go to the lectures... they will always inspire you and Dr. Nelson makes them entertaining. This class was great!
I absolutely loved this class. Professor Nelson is AMAZING. I left every class mind blown and inspired. I definitely plan on taking another class from him and 100% recommend taking his SFL 210 class. Our grades consisted of 3 papers and 4 exams. Make sure you take time on the papers and study for the exams and you will do just fine.
I love Larry Nelson. He is SUCH an incredible teacher if you put in your part. Beware that your grade is based only on 4 tests and 3 papers. They aren't very difficult, but he does not curve so you can't slack off. Start working on the papers a few weeks early. I didn't ever read the textbook except when doing study guides. I LOVE THIS CLASS.
Larry Nelson is incredible! His Human Development class was so enjoyable!! Lecture attendance is extremely important, but he is a great lecturer, you'll want to attend!
You cannot take Professor Nelson's class and not go to his lectures! He has amazing lectures that make you think and keep you engaged. You do want to prepare by doing the readings before the lecture so you can better understand what he talks about.
Dr. Nelson is the BEST! I had him for SFL 200 (Eternal Family) and absolutely loved the class! I took human development from him last year and both classes were absolutely phenomenal! Eternal Family is a lot easier grade-wise and most of your grade comes from attendance and reading. His lectures are life-changing!
I never opened the textbook and I was successful in his class because I attended all of them all! (His tests are based on his lectures: sit in the front, take good notes and enjoy!) Professor Nelson is amazingly smart and knowledgeable as well as kind. He explains hard concepts very clearly. I highly recommend taking this class from him!
Professor Nelson was absolutely amazing. Favorite class and professor at BYU. I have learned so much from him that will be applicable throughout life. He cares deeply about the subject he teaches as well as his students. His lectures are so incredible. Wish I could take this class over and over! Study hard for tests & see the TAs for essays!
Everyone should be required to take this class no matter what major you are in. He is so inspirational and you can tell that he has a passion for teaching this course. I learned something new everyday and WOW. His lectures are phenomenal. The class consists of papers and tests, so go to the TA's and study the study guides! BEST!!!!
He was okay. His class was pretty easy so I can't complain, but I didn't like him much as a person. He seemed really fake, not at all genuine. He also refused to discuss a significant grading mistake with my friend because she brought it up after his grading deadline (not the university's). He also never mentioned this supposed deadline.
I hated his curriculum for his eternal families class. The TA's were very subjective when grading, plus, his participation points systematically punishes students for being honest. I received a 65% on an assignment because I used a scholarly article that wasn't peer reviewed. His amazing lectures aren't worth his frustrating curriculum.
Amazing teacher!!He is really passonite about what he teaches and it shows! His lectures were incredible and I looked forward to it everyday. He has TA reviews for all his papers, and his tests are pretty easy. MEMORIZE THE STUDY GUIDES!! As long as you memorize the study guide before you take the test you will do great! Never even opened the book.
This class was my absolute favorite! Dr. Nelsons lectures are interesting and engaging. He shares lots of touching personal stories and makes the class applicable. Do the study guides for tests and TA reviews for papers and youll do great!
Dr. Nelson gives amazing, thought-provoking lectures that make the material applicable to anyone's life. This is a great class to take, even if family life is not your forte. 10/10 would love to take again. Cant stress it enough. He conveys material very plainly with examples. Only 3 papers and 4 tests. READ THE TEXTBOOK. Saves lots of headaches
Dr. Nelson is the best!!! I loved his class so much I considered changing my major just to take more classes from him. He cares so deeply about what he teaches and does a great job incorporating the gospel into his lectures. If you are taking this class, you HAVE to take it from him. One of the best professors at BYU!!
Worst class I've had at BYU. He teaches his opinion as doctrine, and it can be horrible opinions. 1 class was on 'noble and great ones', all about how we're great b/c we were born in the church, and even said that europe has less noble and great people because they all left and that's why his mission wasn't about converts. He's very egotistical
Seriously Dr. Nelson is an amazing professor. He is passionate about what he teaches, cares deeply about his students, and is willing to discuss just about anything. The lectures are very interesting, and are important for the test. Your grade is solely based on 3 papers and 4 tests, so make sure you study up! Textbook is semi-necessary.
Larry Nelson is not just one of my favorite professors; he is one of my favorite humans. He feels like a top scholar in his field and he is highly qualified to teach. I loved coming to class, his lectures were uplifting and enlightening. I am not a Human Development major, but I think anyone who wants to be a parent should take this class. LOVE it.
Amazing professor and human being. I would take any class that Prof Nelson teaches. He is very caring and sensitive to all people, comments, concerns, topics, etc. The lectures are very engaging. All readings can be found online (don't buy the packet). Pretty easy A as long as you pay attention.
Dr. Nelson's lectures are awesome! He presents the material in a really interesting way and is very clearly passionate about what he teaches.
I loved this class not only because of Prof. Nelson's lecture material, but also because the information in this class is so crucial to know and so fascinating to learn. Tests are a little long, but very manageable. A few papers - but if you make effort to meet with TAs and request they grade your paper, you will do fine! Would take 100 more times.
Dr. Nelson is amazing--I loved the lectures, and he teaches so that you understand and learn, so that you can become your best self. I'm taking another class from him next semester. You are graded solely on 3 papers and 4 exams (100 questions). The papers look for specific things, if you meet with a TA it's easy to get an A. Study for the tests tho
I loved taking Human Development from Professor Nelson. He makes lectures interesting and applicable. He does test on what is in the book and doesn't always cover it in class so just know, you'll have to read a lot to do well on the tests.
I adored Dr. Nelson. In his human development class, we had 3 essays and 4 exams. He gives study guides for each of the exams and very clear rubrics for each of the papers. His attendance is not mandatory but I promise you will want to attend his class. I looked forward to his class every day. This is easily my favorite class and favorite professor
Professor Nelson is a kind man. He helped shape a lot of opinions I had and taught me how to be a better critical thinker. I found his lectures informative and I learned a lot. He really cares about his students.
Larry clearly cares about his students. Grade is based off of 4 tests and 3 papers. Rubrics for papers are very detailed: follow them, and you'll do fine! Definitely go to lecture, as he gives lots of examples that are used on the tests. Lectures are very enjoyable. Really glad I took this class with Larry!
DR. NELSON IS SO INSPIRATIONAL! I really feel like it should be a mandatory class for everyone. I just took it for fun and absolutely loved it. Tests are almost exactly what's on the review sheet. Papers take time but go to the TAs, they are SUPER helpful. Reading is so long, but not mandatory so don't worry. Seriously, take this class!
Dr. Nelson is a fantastic teacher. You learn a lot from his lectures and readings. I would definitely take another class from him.
Dr. Nelson really cares about all of his students, even in a class of hundreds of people. Lectures are so inspiring and the papers are easy (especially if you take advantage of the TA lab), but tests are more difficult, with specific questions on both lectures and the textbook as well as lots of application. Definitely take this class from Larry!
He is a good professor, I struggled being in a huge class but he does a good job managing it. He is very thoughtful and careful on topics. He has great lessons and is interesting to talk to. I appreciate everything that I learned in his class. You won't be disappointed taking it. I think there are only 4 papers and 4 exams. They are tricky though!
Dr. Nelson is an incredible professor. He cares a lot about his students and is very careful to make everyone feel loved and accepted. He is very passionate about his subject, and he wants his students to care too. attendance and participation are mandatory and self-graded on an honor system. He makes you earn your grade, but work and you'll get it
Dr. Nelson is a great professor and really cares about his students. He is very respectful of his students and all of their different circumstances. I definitely recommend taking the three-credit version of Eternal Families so you can have Dr. Nelson!
This class was AMAZING and I would definitely take it again because hes a great teacher. Papers are graded tough, but you can do well on everything else and still get a good grade.
There was so much reading for this class and we never used it. You get points for doing the reading, but you don't talk about it in class and it's not on the test. I felt like his class was always a pity party. He seems like a great guy, but he was always trying to please everyone's opinion. I often felt like he was preaching opinion, not doctrine.
Wow, probably one of my favorite classes and professors at BYU. Dr. Nelson does a great job of handling tough issues gently and in a way that is supported by both research and gospel teachings. There were a couple of big papers that were really not too bad if you follow the rubric. Dr. Nelson is a solid choice for an Eternal Families professor.
Best professor at BYU!! Thank you professor Nelson!! Everyone should take this class!
I love Prof. Nelson! He does a good job of not having religious bias and makes you think. There is a ton of textbook reading, but Prof. Nelson tries to ease the burden and the tests are open note & open book. Despite this, the tests are still difficult. There are also 3 papers that you need to write, and those can be pretty tedious as well.
I loved Prof. Nelson! He is super generous and I really enjoyed taking his class. The tests are difficult but they are open book and open note. The lectures and reading are both incredibly mandatory if you want to do well in this class. The papers at first seem hard but he has amazing TA's who give you great instruction.
Dr. Nelson is the sweetest!! Not very many assignments, and the lectures were always really uplifting. He is caring and passionate and I definitely recommend!!!
Dr. Nelson is amazing. With a family class, there can be controversial subjects, and he is very aware of people and not wanting to offend. He states it explicitly, and you can tell from his lectures, he wants everyone to feel comfortable and cared for
Professor Nelson is super nice and good at teaching, however this was his first online class and he had no idea how to do a lecture under 2 hours long. I had trouble watching lectures and taking the quizzes on them. It wasn't that his lectures were boring, he just knew how to get on really long tangents. Outside of lectures it was an easy class.
I took this class online on-demand. He is THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Even through the screen, you can feel his care, and how much he loves teaching. When I emailed him questions, he was super responsive and helpful. Everything is open book open note. Just put in the time and you'll get an A. Can be time consuming but so worth it.
I don't know why but SFL 200 was not available. I took that class. I am a fair person but I left SFL because of him. He literally taught FALSE doctrine. I'm not kidding. I was SHOCKED. I showed my family and friends what he said. Everyone was shocked. Also, he is very arrogant and condescending. I was gravely disappointed with this professor.
I will always take a class from Dr. Nelson when available, he is such a caring and understanding person and really wanted to help when i struggled with personal life. He loves his students and what he teaches, he makes it so you want to be engaged in the lessons. 1 test and then final, you have 4 papers (2 smaller) and then attendance for grades
Dr. Nelson is real. His lectures reflect personal experiences that create meaningful connections with his course content. On top of being an expert in his field, his passion for childhood and the principles of development is evident in everything he does. His class structure is straightforward. His TAs are well-trained and helpful. 10/10 recommend.
Professor Nelson gives the BEST lectures. He spends a lot of time preparing for them and it shows. I felt uplifted after leaving each lecture. His lectures do tend to last long. There are 4 papers that are pretty easy. He also gives about 4 tests and they are moderately hard. I recommend taking Professor Nelson!
Professor Nelson is now my favorite professor. He loves and cares for his students and that shows, even in the online lectures. This class will change your view on life! Tests are open book and open note but they are long and tricky! Lectures are incredible. Papers can be time consuming but interesting topics. Can't recommend this course enough!
Be sure to read the book and listen to lectures. Otherwise, you won't pass. The papers look hard, but they're super easy. His lectures are amazing and I love him as a teacher. His tests can be hard. Sometimes, there are questions that you haven't talked about in class yet. However, it's balanced by at least 5 freebie questions. He's fun!
Phenomenal, fascinating lectures. This is the most engaging professor I have ever had. This class makes you think differently about everything! It is also an amazing parenting class. Dr. Nelson is hilarious, loves his students, and loves to teach. Awesome personal stories given. Fascinating class. I was genuinely sad when it ended.
The class isn't easy because it takes a lot of time, but it is totally doable. He shared experiences that strengthened my testimony. Tests are open note and open book & questions come straight from the lecture/book. I never read the textbook and still did good on the book quizzes. 3 papers over the semester - they took time but are super doable.
A friend recommended this class over the REL C 200 version, and I loved it. One of the best classes I've taken. I learned so much that I want to apply in the future. Because of being online, tests were open-notes/book and no stress. Only challenging assignments were two papers, so start early. But they were graded easily and uplifting.
I took this class on demand remote so it was 100% online with pre-recorded lectures. Dr. Nelson's lectures were really great though! I loved listening to them, however, because it was remote I didn't have much interface with him. He was willing to work with me when I had a death in the family and gave me an extension on assignments that week.
I LOVE this man, he is amazing and is one of the best professors I have ever worked with. He schedules the class so if you keep up with the work you won't get overwhelmed. One paper was graded by a TA and got a D even though I followed the rubric, so I talked to him and he looked over my paper and changed it to an A. So, feel free to reach out.
Dr. Nelson was born to be a professor. The way he talks, the way he tells stories, the examples he gives, the way he moves from one idea to the next makes his lectures a unique and inspiring experience. I took Human Development (got a B-) and The Eternal Family (got an A) from him. It is not an easy class, but his lectures are worth anything.
Larry Nelson is the man. I took this Fall 2020, so it was an On Demand course. Tests were kinda intense, but he gives you all the materials you'd need to know. For the papers, if you follow the TA outlines and meet with them, you'll be solid. Great teacher and was definitely my favorite class of the semester. 100% take this class from him if u can!
Prof. Nelson might be the most caring professor I've ever had. His lectures were well-done, but they had a lot of information to write down so they usually took me twice as long to watch. The book is superr long. I never did any reading but then I had to use a lot of control-F on the exams.
Prof. Nelson does a great job of teaching SFL 200 and is accessible when you need help. He has well trained T.A's that are there to help you. His lectures are great and his exams are pretty easy. There are a few writing assignments that are not super hard. I will say I wish he had made it clearer what he wanted from our papers with a sample paper.
Dr. Nelson is awesome! He really cares about his students being successful as people and makes sure what he teaches can apply to their lives, now or in the future. His lectures are good, but a little long. The tests arent too bad. He definitely incorporates the gospel into his class in a really uplifting and helpful way! He is a great choice!
Dr. Nelson is a great professor. Not only does he teach well, he is funny and enjoyable to listen to. He teaches in a way that is understandable and uses personal experiences to teach. Whenever I needed help, he was always willing to help! His tests are super hard though because there are multiple right answers and you have to choose the best one.
Professor Nelson was one of my favorite professors here at BYU. Most of his class is lectures, however he is super engaging and makes the lectures enjoyable. There is quite a bit of reading/listening to talks for this class but a big portion of your grade is based on finishing the readings and attending class.
Dr. Nelson is one of my favorite professors ever! He is so caring, but more than that, he is accessible. When you need to talk to him, he answers right away and I respect that so much. In addition, he really cares about what he is teaching. This subject is so useful to anyone in any situation!
Take this class!! I had it on-demand remote so I never actually met him, but I could still fell how much he cared about me as his student. He's there to help and support you and his lectures are memorable and applicable to life. Great professor!
He is SUCH A GREAT LECTURER. He knows how to articulate things really well. I did try to answer a question and he completely shut my answer down, I asked other people and they thought my answer was "correct" (it's religion so a lot of "correct" answers). Now I don't really want to participate in class. But other than that he is SOOO AMAZING!!!!!!!!
This class was completely on-demand, but he was still able to connect to the class through his amazing lectures. I felt the Spirit each lectures, and this class gave me a better life perspective. All tests & quizzes were open note, so I could find all the answers in the textbook. I recommend this class to any student of any major.
Dr. Nelson is one of the best professors I've ever had, he's a really talented lecturer which made class super enjoyable, and he did an awesome job of incorporating class content into current issues. Super inspirational as well, 12/10 would recommend!
Professor Nelson is so passionate about his job, and you can tell. His enthusiasm for the topics he covers is contagious despite the TON of information he crams into each lecture that might usually seem overwhelming.
Very caring and kind professor. This class was relaxing in some ways and challenging in othersperfect balance in my opinion. Also halfway through the semester, I realized that his voice sounds almost exactly like Michael Scott from the Office, which was pretty distracting.
This class is awesome. If you can wait until Winter semester to take SFL 490 from Dr. Nelson, DO IT. I learned so much & it was a very straightforward class. 3 papers, no exams, and weekly reading reports on your honor. He just is so dang inspirational and thought provoking. An awesome class to take your final semester!!
I love Dr. Nelson! Even though it's an on demand course, you can tell how much he loves the class and his students! There is a lot of work, but I found it so interesting! Everything was open book, open note, but I don't think he normally does that other than when it's online. Take this class! The work is soooo worth it!!
Prof. Nelson is one of my favorite professors. He's outline is incredibly instructive and the TA's are great resources. There really is no reason to not pass this class if you follow the outline, go to class, and have TA's read over your papers before you submit them. You will learn great things in this class.
Dr. Nelson is the absolute best. He has really cool insights that incorporates doctrine with what we learn from the class. There are a couple papers, but nothing crazy. Tests are open note. Lots of reading, but it is all super interesting. Lectures are long, but watch on 2 times speed;)
Love professor Nelson! He is specific with his papers, but you can follow the rubric and use the TA's to get near perfect papers. He does have SUCH amazing insights and lectures.
Dr. Nelson is very kind and respectful/open minded on sensitive subjects. He wants his students to succeed! I only wish I could have had an in-person class because the class is very interesting. His tests are straight out of his lectures and the textbook, so the tests are easy, but also detailed so pay attention! TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM!!!
I took SFL 210 on demand. I was surprised by how connected I felt to Prof. Nelson during his lectures even though they were pre-recorded. He is such an amazing man, he is willing to do anything for his students even if he hasn't personally met them. One of my favorite professors ever!
I took his human dev and eternal families class and Im so glad I did. He is the single reason why I have been able to stay in the church. He loves what he teaches and is so passionate about how the subject applies to our every day lives and the larger systems we are all part of in the world. My favorite professor I had at BYU.
I love prof Nelson!!! His class is so interesting and very applicable to real life, it changed my view on life and future parenting. He genuinely cares so much about all of his students (tests and quizzes are open book/note). There is a lot of reading, and you don't have to do it to pass, but it helps, and they are interesting. Highly recommend!!!!
He cares a lot about his students and is happy to answer any questions
Professor Nelson is amazing! This is literally the best religion course I have ever taken. There are a few difficult papers but as long as you meet with the TA, you can get a good great on it. The expectations are really clear. Professor Nelson loves the gospel and cares about his students and you can tell. BEST class! Take it if you can!
This is one of my favorite classes I have ever taken! The test were all online and the 3 papers were super clear and easy to complete. The lectures were so amazing and you can tell he really cares about what he is teaching and is so knowledgeable. I learned so much from this class!!
The epitome of an amazing professor. I have taken two of his classes now and will not skip his classes just because I enjoy them. He does everything he can to help you including open book/note exams, and keeping exams open for a long period of time. The papers were super cool topics too. I just love Dr. Nelson.
You write a few papers over the course of the semester but none of them are very hard if you just read the instructions. Tests are open book and open note. His lectures are captivating and he talks about difficult topics so well. GREAT CHOICE.
Professor Nelson is amazing! His lectures are engaging and he includes lots of examples and stories to help students understand each concept. He is extremely caring and often incorporates the gospel into lectures, leaving you feeling motivated and spiritually uplifted. I learned so much in this class and absolutely loved it!
He is by far my favorite Professor I've ever had. He is so caring and teaches relevant information that you will use in your life. I would 100% take this class again. He assigns 3 papers and the tests are open book. If you put a little bit of effort into this class you'll get an A. TAKE THIS CLASS IT'S AMAZING!!!
BEST CLASS AT BYU. Dr Nelson changed my life and I have the utmost respect for him. The way he incorporates the gospel into hsi lecutres makes it not only and educationale xperience, but a spiritual one too. Exams are open book, open note and allows you to really focus on having an experience in the class, not just getting by. Strongly recomend.
I'm a new freshman this year and I LOVED this class! The teacher is so amazing. The quizzes and exams are all open book/notes. Although you need to write 3 papers throughout the semester... they were pretty simple and didn't take much time. This was by far my favorite class I've ever taken. I highly recommend Nelson !!
I talk about the content of this class SO much in my every day life, I literally learned so many helpful things. I don't care what major you are, TAKE THIS CLASS! If you are willing to read a textbook for 45 minutes per week and write easy papers, you will do just fine. He is such a great teacher and I always left with a new take on things.
I loved this class! He has great TA's and cares about the subject. Get ready to read! One of the best classes I've ever taken at BYU. There are 2 major papers and 2 small papers. The tests are not bad at all. I always left his class feeling inspired. His rubrics are very specific and the TA's give great advise. A MUST TAKE!
HE IS MY FAVORITE TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD!! He cares so much about his students and it shows. He truly teaches through the spirit yet by being also politically correct. He is amazing and allows all quizzes, tests, and even the final exam to be online and open book :)
I would highly recommend this class to any major because I gained so much valuable life knowledge - from understanding the numerous influences that shape our development to parenting. At the end of each lecture, Dr. Larry Nelson tied the content to real-life application and the Gospel. Come willing to learn, to work, and to have your life changed!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Quizzes and tests are open notes. Amazing lectures. Very caring!
I LOVED his class. Tests and Quizzes are open note and open book. Papers are graded a little harder, but as long as you follow the rubric they're pretty easy to score well on. His lectures are SO interesting. Definitely my favorite class I've taken!
Lots of reading but most of it is actually pretty interesting and I survived by skimming. 4 tests, all open note, but 100 questions and they can get super specific and tricky. Nothing crazy though. Meet with your TA for papers and your life will be easy!! Lectures were so awesome most of the time where I could actually feel the spirit.
Amazing and super interesting and inspiring lectures! All tests and quizzes were open notes and online.
Professor Nelson is a really caring professor who does an excellent job of making his classroom a safe and welcoming place for all students. He also helps to apply what you're learning to your life and allows you to see things from new perspectives. He is my favorite professor and his class changed my life!
Professor Nelson is my favorite professor ever! His lectures were hilarious and super insightful. The tests and quizzes were open note, book, and lecture. Papers were easy as long as you followed the rubric. This was my favorite class ever, and I was always excited to go to it. If you're debating about taking the class, do it! You'll learn a ton
I've never heard a bad word about Larry Nelson. He's awesome! His lectures were incredibly entertaining and inspiring. Almost every time I left that class I felt like wiser person. His reasoning is clear and it's obvious that he's a very intelligent person, but also a really caring one. I've recommended it to many people, and now that includes you!
I love Larry Nelson! I took his SFL 200 version of Eternal Families because I loved his SFL 210 class last semester. He is the best professor- so caring and kind. His lectures are super uplifting! The tests are all open book and super easy. This class barely has any assignments besides reading due before every class period. Definitely recommend!
Literally the best professor at BYU, I've taken a couple of his courses and it always is the most incredible experience!
Teaching eternal families is hard so I'm not super critical of Dr. Nelson. Somedays I felt like he repeated himself over and over again for 75 minutes and I would get pretty bored. He is extremely knowledgeable and I definitely learned a lot in his class. One major issue was that his TA's were all kind of pretentious and difficult to work with.
Do not procrastinate papers!!!! (There are only 3, but they take you longer than you think they will.) TAs are a huge asset for papers, they will help you A TON! Honestly you'll be fine if you choose not to go to class, but you get so much more out of it if you go (and tests will be a little easier).
Prof. Nelson is one of the BEST professors I've ever had. I took Human Development from him Fall 2021 semester and loved it, and the same was for taking Eternal Families this past semester. You can tell he loves his students and wants the best for them. Exams are open note and book, even the final, and the final is not cumulative.
Dr. Nelson is amazing! His assignments are clear, lectures and thorough, and he applies everything on a personal level/shares stories to help with memorization. Took this for a GE and loved every second of it! Take notes, do the assigned readings, you'll do great. Assignments are clear and TA's are so helpful! Tests are open note/textbook!!
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! He is SO intelligent and cares so much about his students and what they are learning. I always left his class feeling the spirit, he incorporates the gospel in all his lectures. If you go to his class, you will learn so much more than just reading the textbook. The tests were difficult, but were all open book and open note.
I freaking loved this class. Not sure I would recommend taking it over a spring semester because the readings are super intense in such a short time! Tests are open book/note, but it taking solid notes on the readings makes a huge difference. Papers are straightforward and the TA's are SO helpful!! Nelson is great.
I LOVED Dr. Nelson's lectures. He is amazing at teaching the concepts, and you can tell he really cares about and lives what he teaches. I felt the spirit in that class, even when he wasn't talking about anything particularly spiritual. His tests are open book, open note, so as long as you take notes in lectures you'll be good.
Dr. Nelson's lectures are fantastic! Lots of TA's to assist in writing assignments. There are only 2 essays and 2 worksheets. 2 midterms and a final. I looked forward to this class every TUE/THU. Beware there is a lot of reading.
Best teacher ever
I loved his lectures so much! The tests are a bit ridiculous though. They are open note but are 100 questions and extremely hard ( like scouring the textbook, your notes, his slides, and STILL getting things wrong) I spent over 7 hours on a test only to get a 92%. Papers are straightforward, just not super relevant. Kind of teach yourself.
I loved SFL 210 with him, so I took this one, but I don't love it. I get that he's teaching sensitive topics, but It seems like he's walking on eggshells trying not to offend anyone. I walk out most days wondering if doctrine was taught or not. Don't get me wrong though, the class is easy (tests=open note&3 short essays) and he's a great professor!
Loved his SFL 200 class, but it seemed like he put tons of emphasis on not trying to offend instead of just going right into the topics. His class helped me decide my major. I didn't get good scores on my papers, but seems like it was mostly on the TAs who graded. Whoever was grading seemed confused on the reqs and didn't give clear feedback.
Love love love Larry and this class. Love that he is able to integrate his lectures and the material were learning with teachings from the church and his own testimony. I have actually switched my major to human development after this class. He is so passionate about what he teaches and it makes a HUGE difference. Quite a bit of reading.
Nelson is amazing, take this class. You won't regret it.
Professor Nelson has such inspirational lectures that he finds a way to relate to the gospel, and they're always so interesting. His tests are all open note, open book, online, you can save and come back, and have a long period of time to take them. There are three papers that are kind of long, but there are so many tools to be successful on them.
Professor Nelson is seemingly respectful. As class progresses I noticed that he would somewhat mock the things that students who had previously expressed questions/concerns had said. The class had 4 tests (100 questions each, open note) and 4 papers. It is a lot of work. The TA's will help on papers but they are very time consuming.
Professor Nelson is really good. I do believe he is genuinely trying to be respectful and also faithful to the gospel, but it does sometime seem that he is "walking on eggshells" to avoid offending people. I think some of those concerns do have some merit. The class is fair, pretty easy, and you learn a lot. Long lectures can get boring though.
Dr. Nelson is an amazing teacher. He addresses some pretty tough issues with so much compassion alongside revealed truth and science. Papers are a bit tougher. Be sure you know what your TA is looking for: mine was pretty particular. But Dr. Nelson is seriously one of the best! I learned so much taking this class.
I loved Dr. Nelson's class and would totally recommend! He incorporates the gospel into all aspects of human development and it was obvious that he was passionate about the subject and wanted to help his students. Tests are open-note and kind of time consuming; 3 papers for the semester but they're pretty straightforward.
Dr. Nelson is phenomenal! Learned so much from his lectures, inspirational, entertaining, and factual.
The professor is wise, intelligent and passionate. Don't take this class if you want to actually learn or have an easy religion class. His TA's grade the essays unfairly and give low scores. He gives too much reading material that doesn't don't even correlate to the lessons and bc there's so much you can't comprehend it well. Overall it sucked.
Amazing Lectures given!
Dr. Nelson really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He discusses sensitive topics with kindness and empathy. Definitely take the eternal family from him if you can. There are 2 papers, tests are open book/open note, and you get points for coming to class and doing the readings.
Definitely my favorite of the semester. Work was minimal and not too difficult. Lots of readings to complete, but if you use audio of talks at 2x speed, not too bad. Points for coming to class and doing readings. Two essays that were not too bad and TAs will help you if you schedule an appt. Tests open note/ open book. Loved this class!
Larry Nelson and this class changed my life. His lectures are so beautiful and so inspirational. I walked away wanting to be a better disciple, and prepared for marriage and family life. Lots of reading but it's manageable. Only a couple papers and tests are open book open note. He cares so much and is so empathetic. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Such an amazing class. I am so glad I took from him. If you do all the assignments you are essentially garaunteed an A. He is super respectful and I still think back to lectures. The reading is honestly optional. I just listened to it (it's church talks) while doing house chores and all open note tests!
Dr. Nelson is one of my favorite professors. His class taught me so much about human development and gave me a very open-minded view about things that I had been taught incorrectly before. Some of the things that he said that seemed very dogmatic but if I got paid every time he said "this is on AVERAGE" or "the research shows.." then I'd be rich.
Dr. Nelson is absolutely fantastic. He gives his lectures on difficult topics in such an understanding and loving way. I have learned SO much about the gospel and families in this class. There are two super easy papers, and the tests are open book/open note. There is quite a lot of reading, and the readings can be really long.
Nelson is an amazing person, really cares about his students (which he manages to convey even in a 300 person class). He does make sure to make this a 3.0 credit class though, if you want an easy religious class this probably isn't for you.
Amazing class. I loved having scientific studies to back church principles. He knows how to tackle sensitive topics. Lectures are awesome. Very reasonable workload. For the research papers, see the TAs two-three times, they grade harshly. Tests are open-note with no time limit. Take this class for your eternal families credit, it was well worth it.
Professor Nelson was an amazing teacher! I loved all of his lectures and was always excited to be in class. I would often walk away talking about the things we had discussed in class in my own friend group and with my family. He tells very engaging stories that help you to learn and remember the concepts.
Professor Nelson is an incredible and inspiring teacher. I do not know how he conveys his message and love to 600 students in a huge auditorium, but he does. He teaches in a way that is easy to see how much passion he has for his discipline. He is an exceptional scholar and teacher. His lectures are some of the most thought-provoking at BYU.
Highly recommend this class with this teacher. I have learned so many useful things about future parenting and how kids' brains develop, and my testimony has been strengthened a lot! Dr. Nelson is inspiring and kind. It is pretty time consuming, but manageable. Frequent quizzes, 4 tests, and 3 papers. All open notes/slides. Worth the effort!
Take this class from Prof Nelson!! His lectures are amazing, he is incredibly sensitive, and he really cares about his students. It was so interesting to see The Family Proclamation backed up by research and science. Your grade is based on self-reported readings, a few easy papers, and two open-book open-note exams. Highly recommend!!!
Dr. Nelson is a true professional at his job. I will always hope to take another of his classes. There's very little work, but some papers which are very toughly graded. His tests are definitely manageable, and his class is well organized. Be ready to write a few long papers that unless you meet with your TA consistently you won't do that well with
This class with this professor should be mandatory for how applicable and inspirational all the concepts that are learned. Highly recommend taking this class. Dr. Nelson is amazing and inspiring and helps you deeply understand and care about his passions. Beware, there are 3 long and difficult papers, but if you start them early it's not bad!
Dr. Nelson is by far my favorite professor I have had at BYU. He truly cares about his students and their success. He always found a way to tie human development back to the gospel. Class itself was very manageable. A few long papers and open note exams. Don't leave them to the last minute and you will be fine!
Dr. Nelson is one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are captivating and inspiring. He is very professional and teaches controversial topics well. He passionate about teaching and openminded. Start on papers early and go to TAs for help. It would be a mistake to take this class from someone other than Larry Nelson.
One of the best classes/professors I've had at BYU. He is so caring and good at explaining content even to a large class. Learned SO much and LOVED the class way more than I expected. The tests/quizzes are open note/book, and papers are not as hard as everyone says. As long as you take good notes and start early on papers, you'll do well.
The lectures were amazing and everything was open notes! Take good notes and you'll be set!
Professor Nelson is amazing! I took his human development class and absolutely loved it. He is very respectful of everyone's opinions, and beliefs. He taught every lecture with understanding of others and created a comfortable atmosphere every day in class. I always felt welcomed in his class. I would strongly recommend taking this class from him!
Larry Nelson was a great teacher for this class! The content was interesting and he taught it very well! The tests were open note which made it hard to find motivation to attend class but honestly it was super nice. There were four essays which it was hard to find the motivation to write but as long as you looked at the rubric you would do great!
Prof Nelson is hands down my favorite prof I've ever had. Even with a huge class I could tell how much he cared about his students. Attendance isn't mandatory but I would highly recommend going to lectures and taking good notes because some test questions are based off of examples he only gives in class. Would take his class again if I could!
Dr. Nelson is the best. He is so empathetic and makes you want to be a better person. Ties the Gospel in seamlessly to whatever topic he is teaching and is super passionate about his field of study. Tests are open note, but don't take that as an excuse to not do the reading. He seriously wants to help his students. Life-changing teacher, honestly.
Inspired professor who is super aware of our current needs and concerns. I loved going to class! He prepares you for exams, but get ready to write a few toughly-graded papers. Use TAs!
Dr. Nelson truly cares about his students. Despite the huge class size, he really worked with me and my individual circumstances. I highly recommend this class to anybody and everybody. You learn how to be a good parent in the future, how kids work and develop, and how humans work in general. If I could make it a required class I would.
I took this class a couple years ago as well as others with Dr. Nelson and this one was my favorite. He is such a kind professor who truly cares about his students. He approaches tough subjects in a very respectful manner. His exams are open book/note but there are readings you will need to do before each class. Highly recommend!
A fantastic guy. He deeply cares about people and healthy human development. He wants you to learn and there are great discussions during class about the material. Highly recommend this guy and I have a lot of respect for him. Take his class, it's really great.
Hands down my favorite professor ever!! The class is organized well, lots of good readings, a few papers, and 2 exams. He teaches concepts so clearly, and his lectures are so engaging. He is a very caring professor and teaches with such love of both his students and the gospel. I learned so much from this class.
Most entertaining class ever! His lectures are funny, emotional, and interesting. He's amazing at teaching concepts. The most caring professor you'll ever meet. Loves the gospel but loves his students even more. I've never felt so seen in a room of 500 people. This class should be required. You will learn so much! Don't take it from anyone else!
Classes are super interesting and makes everything you read in the textbook super clear. Take really good notes with lots of examples since you can also use them on the exams. Chapter quizzes in the textbook but open book. Go to class because there is stuff he talks about that is not in the textbook. Definitely take this class with him!
Dr. Nelson is AMAZING! Get on his waiting list and make sure to buckle up for some of the most life changing lectures of your life. I always looked forward to his class! There are 2 big papers that you should get head start on, a lot of reading but manageable. He creates such a safe and loving environment, i want to take more classes from him!
I do not usually come and write reviews but professor nelson is amazing. He is the kindest man and an amazing professor. The content is already interesting but he takes it to another level. I highly recommend taking this class from professor nelson. Some people will complain about the papers but started early enough they are a breeze.
prof nelson is awesome. his lectures are very impactful and honestly changed my viewpoints on some things. he's very caring and accepting, and balances that wonderfully with absolute loyalty to the doctrine and teachings of the church. 10/10 would recommend
Not only is Dr. Nelson incredible in teaching, he is very engaging and understanding. You will walk out of his classroom changed. He focuses on creating a welcoming, comfortable environment for everyone. I wish this were a required class at BYU; it honestly was the favorite, most useful course I've taken
Such an interesting class, even though you just sit through lectures. He is very caring and does a great job balancing the church view, his view, and the outside world view. You only have a view papers, weekly quizzes about the textbook info, and 4 exams, including the final exams and they are all open note. He is such a great professor.
Professor Nelson is an amazing guy! I really enjoyed his class. He taught with the Spirit and managed to make every lecture personal, even in a room of 200+. I am super grateful for all he taught me about God and about human life! Papers are pretty heavily weighted, but other than that 10/10 recommend!
Best professor I've ever had. I feel the spirit in every class and I learned so much. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. There are a few big papers but the grading criteria is super clear, you get plenty of time to complete them, and the TAs record reviews where they go over everything you need to do for it.
Easily the best class I've ever taken. I couldn't say enough good things about him. TAKE. THIS. CLASS. Go to the lectures. Listen to him. He speaks with an amazing spirit, and you can tell he loves what he teaches. Seriously, he's amazing. Please take him. (+powerpoints are available before class so take good notes, all quizzes/exams are open note)
Professor Nelson is easily one of the most knowledgeable professors I've come across at BYU. He is so caring, and his lectures are AMAZING. Professor Nelson teaches lots of thing that I find myself applying in my own life. There is quite a bit of reading, but it is all reenforced during lectures. Tests are all open note.
I loved Professor Nelson! It is so obvious that he cares about his students and that he is truly passionate about Human Development! A few things I wish I would have know: The TA's aren't the greatest sometimes and will grade super harshly on papers. I went to office hours multiple times and got a C on my first essay. Tests are super hard!
I loved the beginning of this class. But as it continued he went more emotional and less doctrine-based. I found the topics he was teaching did not relate to the family at all. And in reality, hurt the family. His last topics went against church doctrine. His class is muddled with beliefs and opinions not based on logic or truth. Wouldn't recommend
Dr. Nelson's class was LIFE CHANGING. I will be taking another class from him next semester. He teaches sensitive topics without any sense of politics. He is professional and well-organized, but I also feel like I have a personal emotional connection with him. Amazing guy.
Great class! Sometimes boring, but he has great stories. Don't be fooled by open note/open book quizzes and tests. His class takes time, and the grade is only papers, quizzes, and tests, so you can't afford to lose many points if you want an A. As a person, I admire Dr. Nelson so much. He is very loving and truly cares about students.
The way this class is set up maximizes learning and enlightenment. I can't say enough great things about the applicable content and the insightful perspective of Nelson. He is the most respectful and kind human I've ever met. I appreciated how he listened to all sides and tackled difficult topics objectively. he's careful to stick to doctrine.
Dr. Nelson was so caring, insightful, and impressive. Disclaimer: it seems this class was really catered toward those who have a troubled relationship with the church. If you are in a good spot with the LDS church you may get impatient while he, at times and mostly understandably, walks on eggshells while discussing certain topics. Wonderful man
Super friendly and an amazing professor. Really cares about his students and what is being taught. Will answer any questions you have. Assignments are few but they are very applicable to what we are learning.
TAKE THE CLASS WITH HIM. He knew what to teach, how to teach it, he loves what he teaches & who he teaches. It's a beautiful, brilliant class, & he changed the way I understand life. If you want to take this class, you'll never regret taking it from him. HIGHLY recommend. Higher than anyone I've ever recommended. TAKE IT FROM HIM!!!
I couldn't help but want to share just how amazing Dr. Nelson is. His class was easily my favorite class I've taken. Dr. Nelson is so engaging and cares so much for his students. The workload is completely manageable and Dr. Nelson is so willing to help you and work with you. I would absolutely recommend this class to anyone.
Dr. Nelson is easily the best professor at BYU. There could not be a single more passionate or involved professor, he seriously teaches with his whole heart and makes every single student feel known and loved. This has probably been one of my favorite courses I ever have and will take. TAKE THIS CLASS!! It will seriously change your whole life.
Dr. Nelson is amazing! His lectures are always so interesting and often he'll connect the concepts that we are learning about to church doctrine which is so cool! He is so kind and creates such a great atmosphere in his classroom. The papers are not too bad, they give outlines and getting help from TAs is super helpful too.
As far as the professor goes, I really enjoyed his lectures. He handled sensitive material well. The tests were not bad as long as you did the reading, and the reading quizzes were alright. The papers were the worst thing, and I spent more time on them than in any other class, and they were pretty harshly graded. Nelson was decent though, good TAs.
This class genuinely changed my life and made me so excited to be a mom. The 3 papers were the worst part of the class, but instructions were very clear. Highly highly recommend.
I cannot hype Dr. Nelson up enough. I looked forward to every lecture, and his class was easily one of the best I've ever taken. I walked out of every class changed in some way. I wish he taught every class at BYU so I could take all my classes from him. So considerate, smart and funny! There are long papers, but if you prepare, you'll be fine.
Dr. Nelson is INCREDIBLE!! He really cares so much and makes everyone feel accepted. One of the best classes I've ever taken, and I know it will truly bless my life forever.
Dr. Nelson is honestly one of my favorite professors at BYU. I took both SFL 200 and 210 from him, and both times his lectures were absolutely amazing and honestly changed my life. Everything he teaches is super applicable to life right now, not just a career, and I feel like I was able to really grow. Would recommend to everyone!
Alas, this course won't be offered through the SFL department after this semester so I'll focus on his teaching overall. He's passionate and makes you think about things differently. Can handle controversial topics with grace. Readings do actually prepare you for a class discussion.
I really enjoyed taking SFL 200 from Dr.Nelson! We had very few assignments and there were very clear instructions on how to do them all.
Honestly only went to class twice and finished with an A-. Don't do that. I regret not being present and giving this class my full attention. There are so many good things to learn from Professor Nelson and this class and I totally ignored that and thought I was above it for an easy grade. Don't make my mistake. Take this class and be present!!!
Larry Nelson is a great guy but, I felt like this class was a waste of my time. He dragged out topics that could have been taught in 30 minutes or less. I stopped attending class at the end of the semester and still got an A on the final. Tests are open notes. Papers can be difficult to execute.
This class wasn't too hard. Tests are 100 questions open note. There are 3-4 papers due that definitely take some time but are graded easy. I didn't love his lectures. He does tell stories in lecture which helps but they were pretty dry and I feel like I learned more from the textbook. Seemed judgmental of people who think differently than him...
Professor Nelson is super engaging, though the class can drag at times. Attendance is a must, but the workload is manageable. I found unstuckstudy AI and the free textbook super helpful for acing the exams. Overall, a solid class!
Fantastic class! Professor Nelson is one of the best professors I've ever had! His lectures were spiritual and funny and fascinating! He taught this subject very well and went over hard topics. I would definitely take this class again or another course with Professor Nelson! I felt the spirit more in this class than I have in any religion class yet
Dr Nelson is very smart and passionate. But his class is boring and pointless. The assignments are unrelated to what he teaches in class and his quizzes are really hard and overly specific. There are a bunch of quizzes and papers. He thinks he's generous with his exams but they actually suck. He also takes 3X as long as he should to explain things.
Amazing Professor! It is obvious that he cares about what he teaches. There are several papers that can take time to do well, so plan accordingly. Exams are open note and take a lot of time and many questions get really specific. He is a tough but fair grader. Can spend too much time on one topic but I always loved the extra details.
HE IS THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER!! His class honestly changed my life! I tell everyone about Dr. Nelson and would 100% recommend him to anyone. Grading is super straight forward, TAs are always happy to help (get help from them it is worth it!), and the tests are open note open book. He is a great teacher and honestly motivational.
At the beginning of the semester, I found I could get by with doing other assignments in class, and still doing well on the exams and papers. I decided to change halfway through the semester, and it made all the difference. Dr. Nelson teaches with the spirit, and his lectures changed my life. Really, take his class, and choose to be present!
I absolutely loved Professor Nelson! His lectures were so entertaining and he did an awesome job of giving examples and metaphors for concepts instead of reading off the slide. Also had super spiritual lectures and I felt so good coming out class. There are 3 essays and 4 exams but they are open note!
Dr. Nelson is amazing! There are weekly quizzes which are open book. There are 4 essays- have a TA look over them before you turn it in. Midterm and final are also open book open note! You don't need to go to the lectures to do well. BUT, his lectures are AMAZING! They are so inspirational for how I want to raise my future family. Amazing class!
I joined the major because of this class. Next semester, I am taking human development with him, and I am also TAing for this class. He taught many gospel principles better than any other teacher in school or church. He used both secular and religious knowledge. We had one research paper and one other paper. Tests were open book, note, and slide.
Dr. Nelson is an amazing human being! His lectures are lecture heavy, usually he speaks the whole time. However, he is very interesting, and shares a lot of personal stories to keep you interested. There is about a quiz a week, but if you read the textbook and go to class you will ace them! The papers are graded pretty hard depending on the TA!
If I could only take courses taught by one professor, I would choose Professor Nelson! He is very uplifting and inspiring and you can tell he really cares about his students. He uses a lot of personal stories and anecdotes to relate the material to the real world which makes it a lot easier to understand. Exams aren't bad and very light workload.
Dr. Nelson is INCREDIBLE! He is very intelligent, & is so caring. His lectures are very engaging & I found myself actually looking forward to them each class. He explains concepts so well & does an amazing job at connecting Human Dev with the gospel. There was more than one occasion where people in class teared up from feeling the spirit so strong!
The rumors are true, Dr Nelson is absolutely amazing. Epic lectures!!!!!!!! This class completely changed my perspective on so many things! Everyone should take his class. Papers are a little tedious but pretty sure all the 210 classes have the same one. Exams are not easy but are open note and open book
Best professor I have had at BYU! And best course thus far! The only reason I didn't say this course is the easiest possible is because it made me want to put in more effort than I normally would just because it was that inspiring. Seriously every day brought something significant. Dr. Nelson has changed my life for the better through this course.
He stretches out a topic that should take 20 minutes into an hour and 15 minutes and turns every minuscule detail into the most important thing the whole world which gets incredibly old and boring incredibly fast. don't recommend.
I LOVE DR NELSON. Great man, very kind and caring. I really think everyone should take this class from him, they really changed my perspective. Loved it and it wasn't too bad. Tests are open note and online. Hw is 2 small quizzes a week on textbook. They are also open note. You write some papers but I thought they were pretty interesting.
Dr. Nelson is such an awesome teacher! I can not imagine taking Human Development from anyone else! Dr. Nelson has made Midterms and the Final open book, open slides, and open note which is super nice and makes the tests way less stressful! This course goes into depth of human development throughout the lifespan and I have learned so much!
I cannot stress enough how much I loved this class. Seriously, Dr. Nelson was so engaging and talked about things that I always wondered about. Online, open note tests, three papers, and chapter quizzes is how he runs the class. Take Human Development with Larry Nelson!
One of the best classes I've ever taken at BYU. Professor Nelson gives amazing lectures throughout every step of human development and I really enjoyed going to his class. There's a required textbook that's a bit expensive and the essays are graded toughly by the TA's but the lectures and content are so good that it's worth it.
I loved Dr. Nelson! This class was so good! I learned a lot and loved it! If you're thinking about taking human development, do it
Honestly, 10 out of 10. His lectures are well done and engaging, and his exams are open-book and open-note. I really enjoyed his class and took a second one from him another semester.
Dr Nelson's lectures are engaging & I wish I could take them again! There is a lot of reading, reading quizzes & 3 papers but they're doable. TAs are helpful & give actual feedback. Dr Nelson is the definition of high love, high expectations. He will do all that he can to help you & really wants you to succeed if you do your part of the work.
Great guy who cares about his students. I thoroughly enjoyed this class. I had all the resources I needed to succeed. TAs are easily accessible. I would say the three papers are the hardest part of this class (because the tests are open note/slides/textbook) and that's what took my grade down, but I also never met with my TA to look over my paper.
Absolutely incredible class - I would absolutely take it again. Teaches you loads about human development and how to interpret it as a parent. Midterms and quizzes are open-book and open-note and you can save, exit, and return. Talk to your TA about your papers early. Textbook website is hard to use. Nelson was my favorite professor this semester.
Assignment expectations were clear and very easy but teach you something. An honest man who cares about the details and teaching you something that can be used for the rest of your life. Great class. definitely recommend.
Professor Nelson is a fantastic professor. His class was one of the most spiritual classes I've taken at BYU and I was in the Human Development class not a religion one. He made it so that the subjects were interesting and fun to learn about and his lectures were incredible. He was also able to handle delicate subject matters really well!
Great professor, entertaining lectures, the way he teaches the material is very applicable to life, I felt like I actually learned useful things. Pay attention in lectures. Considerate guy if you have concerns.
So good! Would take again!
Prof Nelson is great. Easy class and very interesting. He is a great lecturer. The quizzes are really easy if you do the readings but you can honestly just skim them. There are a couple of papers, but they were fun to write and pretty easy. Good class and Prof Nelson is great.
Amazinggg class! I think everyone should take it! Brother Nelson truly cares about what he teaches and I always went away feeling uplifted! I enjoyed attending class and will take away so much to use in my future life! A few quizzes, a few papers, but very achievable! I highly recommend this class and Brother Nelson!!
This has been my favorite class Iv'e taken this semester! Professor Nelson gives the most engaging and passionate lecture. I always leave class feeling enlightened and learn so much! Everything is open book! The papers can be a little time-consuming, but the TAs make them really easy to write. You just have to follow templates and it's not bad!
Work hard and you'll be fine. His lectures are really impactful!
This class was by far my favorite class I have taken at BYU. Professor Nelson's lectures are beyond inspiring and he seriously cares about his students. I learned so much and it was not difficult. Take this class if you have the chance!!
Dr. Nelson is a super nice loving professor. He is willing to work with you. There is a few papers in this class. Meeting with the TAs was super helpful for these. Tests are open note, however they can be slightly challenging. His lectures were cool and he had good stories for all his examples.
I went to class because I genuinely enjoyed them (even in the MARB haha). His tests are open note/open book. He has a weekly reading quiz, 3 papers, and 3 midterms. The hardest part of the class was finishing the reading every week. It's totally manageable and definitely worth it. Dr. Nelson is name brand for SFL 210.
I do not usually come and write reviews but Professor Nelson is amazing. He is the kindest man and an amazing professor. The content is already interesting but he takes it to another level. I highly recommend taking this class or any from Professor Nelson. Some people will complain about the papers but started early enough they are a breeze!
TAKE THIS CLASS! This class is my favorite class I have ever taken and he is an amazing professor! He is so inspiring and you can tell he really cares about his students understanding the content. He's passionate and has some of the best lectures I've ever been to. Open note quizzes and exams, papers are thought provoking but not super difficult!
I absolutely loved Professor Nelson!!! His lectures were amazing, he was really good at connecting content to personal stores (which made it easier to remember!!) and tests were formatted really well. You can use notes and the textbook on exams, essays are pretty chill as long as you meet with your TA, the only annoying thing was the homeworks.
Dr. Nelson genuinely cares about his students and is very passionate about his field. All quizzes and tests are open book, and he focuses more on learning than grades. However, the papers can be challenging, and the TAs grade very strictly, so be prepared for that.
Loved this class. This class is very lecture heavy. Most lectures were amazing, but some were boring and I would fall asleep lol. ATTEND THE BIRTHING VIDEO LECTURE!! I seriously have never felt the spirit more. Dr. Nelson is considerate and has beautiful takes on human development. You can truly tell this is his passion!!!!
The lectures were amazing. He would end class and I would be left wanting more! Exams were easy- you have access to all class notes and PowerPoints. TA's grade a bit harsh for whatever reason so pay attention to rubrics! Weekly quizzes are important- make sure not to miss, even once can drop ur grade a bit. No extra credit offered... :(
Professor Nelson is the best teacher I've ever had. He is wise, knowledgeable, caring, personable, and engaging. I looked forward to his class daily and often left emotional as I was moved by his stories and lessons. The lectures are fascinating and dive deeper than the curriculum. I'm taking another class next semester just to learn more from him.
