Awful teacher. Can't teach at all.
very impatient teacher
Um...He's awful.That's all I can say.
Ah? ???? This teacher doesn't teach well and he is very impatient towards other students. I recommend students to take another teacher if you want to improve your english. He is also a very hard marker.
Hard marker. Go during his office hours to ask for help.
I have read the other posts and I have to disagree. This teacher is the most patient out of all I have encountered at VCC so far. He's an amazing, gifted teacher. If you found it otherwise perhaps it is your attitude and not the teacher.
he is a difficult marker, but he is comprise and patient instructor. he is a social and funny . in the class, a lot of writing assignments. tiresomeness, he is able to compromise for an assignment extension if you have a good excuse GOOD LUCK lol
hard marker. good sense of humor though, and is helpful when approached with your questions. a class you have to work hard in. lots of reading and lots of writing.
window frame of 30minutes to see him and 10 people in line, expects you to do assignments before teaching the lesson. Extremely hard to please with homework, provides no criteria for marking. Unfair and no outside of classroom time to help.
Always makes time for students even if there's a big line up wanting to ask him questions after class. He considers giving reasonable extensions. If you're not a whiner and have realistic expectations, he seems OK. Good luck. lol
Great Teacher very approachable, VERY hard marker BUT you learn stuff in his class, i was scared of him at first but got to understand his humour better and him. its a good class just a hard marker
He's fantastic!
I got the mark I needed but I worked my ass off for it. My biggest gripe is his guilty first, innocent second, attitude when it comes to plagiarism. Yeah, I get it, ppl cheat but dont put the fear of god into ppl about it. He's a very hard marker, no doubt about it. And u better read your stories each class if u wanna do well. I just wish he was more approachable after class, u always get the feeling you're been intrusive asking questions. Good luck.
Larry is a fabulous teacher! I expected first year English to be dry and boring, but he really inspired me to work hard and enjoy his class. I am taking 1229 with him too and find that, like most things in life, you get out of it what you put in!! For all those haters out there, you really missed an opportunity to learn a lot from a brilliant mind!

If you want to have the worst teacher ever than take a course with him. He has no idea what he is doing and what is worse is that he does not mark the papers, but the student him/herself. if he likes you then he will give you a better grade; if he doesn't like you, then you can drop the course. Advice: find another teacher.
The worst teacher ever. Not teaching, has prefered students, very high expectation and not providing any feedback that would help the student. Find another teacher if you want to learn and get the grade you need.
Larry's class is amazing! His sense of humour is refreshing. His classes are interesting and entertaining! The best English class I've ever taken. He clearly details the changes needed to improve your writing. I am shocked to see negative comments. Remember, this is a university course. Don't expect a good grade if your not prepared to earn it.
What a nightmare. Avoid his class at all cost. Very bias, unavailable and not open to helping even though he claims to be. Just terrible.
The worst teacher I have ever met. He has no idea about how to teach. Very biased, weird, no feedback, useless. Take this class with another teacher. I do not know why VCC keeps him. A grade 12 student is way better than him. I took his class just for fun, but it was a nightmare.
Larry makes class super interesting especially for a boring english class. He's approachable, a fair marker, and if you follow the guidelines in the textbook and what he says in class your guaranteed to succeed, it's really not as hard as everyone in here makes it sound. I wished he taught summer semester =(
The worst teacher ever. Not teaching at all because he does not know what to teach. He does not have the knowledge. Useless, rude, makes inappropriate comments in class. Tries to make students to embrace his lifestyle. Those who do so have an easy way, the other ones are deemed to fail.He thinks that his lifestyle is the best. Find another teacher
can't teach
does not know how to teach
No help available outside the classroom.
The worst teacher ever. Does not know how to teach students.

Great teacher! Especially if you are wanting to major in English. He actually has a personality.. unlike some profs. This is a university course, teachers are no longer going to hold your hand. Do the homework and readings (KEEP UP WITH THE CLASS) and you will do wonderfully! Thank-you, Larry for such a great semester.
Excellent teacher. Funny and kind.
Hilarious professor. Helful in and outside of class, great personality, uses pink chalk.
Sometimes says pretty smart things. Hard marker. Not at all the worst teacher
I really liked the presentation part. Not judgmental at marking papers - at least thus far,,just wrote the last one.. He presents interesting ideas and can definitely help to improve the level of writing and critical thinking. Thanks, Larry! Regards.
He is an awesome teacher, if you are going to be lazy and want an easy grade don't bother even coming to college. He is very help and if you make an appointment with him he will be there. He gives you plenty of feed back and it light hearted and very funny!I would take him again in a heart beat!!!
He's an excellent teacher. Very understanding of situations/circumstances as long as you let him know and consistently update him. Attendance is a must! He is a very equal and intelligent teacher. Loved the class.
Larry, is an awesome proff. Attendance is mandatory (10% of your grade.) His humour is refreshing. I enjoyed his class. You must participate in his class. If you can't write a decent essay : don't take his class because he is tough marker.
Great professor. Very helpful as long as you show your interest in class! Very fun:)
The teacher is eloquent and provides the class with a lively atmosphere. The class time passes by quickly with his teaching style. Do note though that he often times get off track in response to questions. He is also a bit quirky with remarks. This class is great if you are comfortable with teacher-student interaction. If not, you will hate it.
Besides looking like Russel Crowe, Larry is by far the worst teacher I've ever had. His marking doesn't make any sense whatsoever, and his sick sense of humour is atrocious. Once he told a student "nice try smart-ass" after getting a question wrong during discussion. Don't take Larry if you plan on getting anything higher than a B.
I would look elsewhere. Poor quality teaching. Wish I got my money back. Have to retake the course again. Will not be doing the courses with any of the university English teachers at vcc.
really horrible, not clear at all. yells at you if you ask questions because you are unsure of procedure, but he always tells you feel free to ask questions. whole class got a bad mark
Horrible just horrible. So rude and unhelpful. If you want to do well in This course do not take with him. Unhelpful, unclear, picks on students. No room for improvement once you get a grade at the beginning he will never give you anything higher! Good luck if you want to fail take his class such a waste of my time and money!!!!
After being in school for many years, I would say Larry Peras is the worst teacher I have ever had in my whole life. He only likes certain ethnicity, does not help you succeed in the course, and picks on students. He is tough but when confronted is nowhere to be found. I ended up withdrawing bec I was just wasting my time.
If you want to learn how to write well, Larry Perras will teach you! You will find your papers FULL of helpful comments and corrections. He sets aside time to help students in his office, and keeps the class up-to-date on his availability. Larry is funny, engaging, and involves the students in discussions. Read your material before class!
Great teacher, I wasn't looking forward to this class however I ended up thoroughly enjoying it. Very interesting topics covered in class. Prepare to be called on randomly and do the pre-readings or else you're screwed.
Every student hates English just because of him. Horrible teacher
Avoid him. You can find better professors else where.
Larry is actually a great teacher and he makes class very enjoyable. He's funny and discusses important topics in a very respectful and informative manner. He is a tough marker for sure, so if you're in it for anything above a B+ be prepared. A tip: let him read your thesis before you write your essay. You'll get a better mark.
Class discussions were very interesting and the chosen subject matter is good. Larry is, however, a very hard marker. Expect to receive at least 1 letter grade below what you're used to.
I like the way he's so open with class discussion. He respects every student's opinion and he listens intently. More often than not, his feedback is always positive. He loves a student who participates a lot in class & vocal about their opinion. He's a tough marker but English is subjective anyway. Follow his comments on the paper & you'll be fine
I noticed when my peers and I were asking for feedback on our papers, he often told us to "not waste his time." Once he cut me off with a, "I don't what to talk about your paper anymore; end of discussion." I ended up with a C grade in the end which is a little embarrassing since English is my only language. I wouldn't recommend this instructor.
If you're religious, you might want to stay away from him. One of the open class decisions was about blind faith, and he asked the class "who here is religious?" I raised my hand, and in front of everyone he asked, "why do you believe in something so illogical?" Disrespectfulness to any student like that is a deal breaker, hence my rate for him.
Extremely difficult class, amazing discussions but unfortunately extremely difficult to get a good grade in that class. I needed a C+ for that class and I spent so much time and effort on my papers yet only received a C. I met with him once out of class time he stated that I was wasting his time, and that he's too busy with marking. Avoid class.
Larry is extremely hard marker. please avoid.
He is a very tough marker. His expectations are too much from student that English is not their first language . He is not a good instructor at all. don't take English class with him. It is just a waist of time. He does not teach anything in class. He does not care about the students. He failed more than half our class last semester.
Class was a nightmare. Don't take him.
He is a good guy with very interesting lectures. He will give you very interesting books to read and just participate in class, he likes that the most and you will be fine
Very bad teacher. Extremely hard and disrespectful. I got B+ in first year English at another college. However, in his class I barely passed. Extremely disappointed. Avoid him students. Doesn't even teach properly.
Very bad teacher. Doesn't give marks. doesn't teach the adequate material also. Pathetic class
Horrible instructor. Very rude and doesn't want to help his students. In class he tries to act nicer but outside the class time he suddenly changes to a mean person who talks down at you. Very bad stories, pathetic class, 100% the worst teacher I have encountered so far.
Very hard teacher. Extremely uncomfortable to stay in his class. Avoid
This guy is definitely the worst instructor in Vancouver community college. Doesn't know what to teach and assigned too much useless reading.
Tough marker ,especially when it comes to essays and paragraphs.
He doesn't really teach at all, just assigns useless reading for students to do on their own. I feel like I didn't really learn anything. He expects us to just read short stories and write academic papers with unclear grading criterias. Doesn't really set up students to succeed.
Prepare to work hard & engage in class discussion. Put in the effort & see Larry outside of class for help; you will be rewarded. He is very respectful of student opinions; don't misinterpret his questions for judgement. When he questions a belief, it is for the purposes of reflection, dialogue, and growth. Excellent & thought provoking instructor.
1) Very knowledgeable teacher, dont be afraid to ask questions, he doesnt make you look dumb or stupid, he just redirects the question to make you think. He doesnt attack you. 2) He is not racist one bit, its an English class. He did say there were things that are going to be discussed that might offend people. Who cares. Embrace it.
Larry is a great teacher who is very insightful and open minded. He allows class discussions and makes sure everyone is involved. His marking may seem hard, but he backs up his grade with constructive comments. He teaches you to analyze and how to write about analysis instead of summarizing which is probably the hardest hurdle to overcome in essays
Wonderful teacher, hilarious, but be warned, if you are a rude, disrespectful student as some tend to be, he will call you out on it - which kind of makes it even better! He's accessible outside of class for feedback, book choices for Lit class are great. I will miss him for sure!
Avoid this professor at all costs if you plan on registering in this course. He's not helpful during his office hours and very unfriendly to students who ask for help during class time.
Larry is hilarious! Great in-class discussions with lots of insightful views on the pieces that we read. I also appreciated that he gave bonus marks for attending protests, voting, and attending musicals! He is a hard marker, but utilize VCC's learning centre and going to his office hours and it will be okay.
I found him tough grader. I got C in his class and repeated same course with another teacher same year guess what I got A-. I am not sure whether I did better or the teacher...
He will call you out randomly in class, does not give good feedback on papers and when wanting to improve, does not support the students that are struggling in class, tends to favor people who are doing well.
Larry gives grades reflective of where you are in your writing journey. His rep as a tough grader may come from students not used to the scholarly standard for literary writing. If you're ESL, prepare to be graded against the same standard, to get a lower mark than you're used to, and to get detailed feedback that'll improve your writing a tenfold.
It's clear Larry loves teaching English and has a passion for it, but he is quite difficult, especially for an intro to English course. He is a very tough marker but gives a lot of feedback which is helpful for future papers. He does call on people, which can be quite stressful too. Take this class only if you are a strong English speaker/writer.
never take him, avoid if you can... he teaches nothing to do with English. no words to explain him/her
Awful
Uses offensive language and makes jokes that are inappropriate for a classroom setting. A very tough grader who focuses heavily on in-class hand-written work. No constructive feedback was given. A mean person inside the class, but he turns into a bully if you try to utilize his office hours and never answer any questions. Avoid him
Unclear about the ways he marks students, he does whatever he wants to, whatever suits him, not according to any fair marking, no rubric or any clear instructions nothing. Not good with if asked how to improve in his course, very condescending and thinks he knows it all
He does favouritism and marks accordingly. He can be rude at times. He set his mind with what student deserve and stick with that from first assignment onwards. People with barely getting C in major assignments passed with B- and people with 70% also getting B-. 10% is attendance and participation which he can manipulate.
Doesn't give much feedback, the way he grades you from the start is the grade you will get for the rest of the semester. Brings personality and political bias into classes. He will randomly call on people to ensure everyone is reading the material. Never heard of anyone getting an A, but also no one failed. But very little work for the class.
Stay away!
I've had Larry for both English classes. Make sure to always engage in his class! I find his humour quite funny and he's a great teacher but his grading is way too harsh. Me and my peers have not gotten a grade above 80 in his class.
Aside from his tough grading, he is pretty rude most of the time. Also get ready to be called randomly during class time.
Larry's grading scale might be challenging, but his lectures are excellent. The material he selected for our 1200 class was so engaging! That said, his course is better suited for those who enjoy writing and have a strong grasp of the English language. If you're not confident in your English skills, I would advise choosing a different professor.
I took Larry for English 1 and 2. I will say English 1 was a lot more difficult than English 2, there was a bit of reading but not too. I would recommend taking both English classes with Larry, taking English 1 with Larry definitely helped me get a better grade in English 2. I felt the need to write a review since everyone wrote so poorly about him
He tells students that they have learning disability
He is funny in class but a very tough grader. If English is your second language, then it is gonna be hard for you.
Learned a lot - if you're willing to put the effort in you will do well. He's very willing to speak to you during office hours and values participation even if you're unsure of the answer.
I went through 4 years and received my bachelor's at UBC without any professor or instructor accusing me like this. This is the first time I've ever been accused of plagiarism, and I am not happy about it at all. He is a tough grader and gives the same score for all the assignments. His writing is messy, and feedback is limited. STAY AWAY!!!
