Awesome teacher... funny
larry is a riot. stats has never been so funny
He was a good professor, but we did call him Scary Larry!
Best teacher I have ever had.

I actually stayed awake in a math class! And he gave us candy...
Not helpful at all. He was somewhat of a jerk to me.
Very cool, knows what he is talking about
Great professor! He deserves a peppa!
study guide are VERY similar to tests. No real reason to go to class if you are good at math. just to go review.
If you're not good at math, even all his explanations & hand outs will not help! Also, all his examples are about sex, drugs and alcohol...strange.
Larry is by far the best professor in the world. EVER. He's the type of professor you would expect at HARVARD or something. I especially like his sweater vests and his tobacco pipe he smokes in class.
I have him currently and noticed that he wears the same shirt to every lecture... anyone else notice that? Also, the way he changes the pitch of his voice lulls me to sleep every lecture

i recommend dr. ries to anyone needing to take stats. not only was he an amazing teacher, he's hilarious. i loved going to class and wish i could take more classes w/him. for math being such a terrible subject, there needs to be more professors like him.
Don't expect him to be flexible with you, unless you're a sorority girl. He wouldn't let me take a test at a later date because I had mono. He's okay at teaching the class, but this guy doesn't know how to handle people. He's a sad, sorry man.
He looks like the Jared the Subway guy!! Except he doesn't weigh 300 pounds. Other than that, he's a great teacher gives a halfway interesting lecture.
Just go to class. His lectures are pretty good, being math lectures and all. He is enjoyable, but like someone mentioned already, not flexible at all. If you do the homework, go to most classes, and go to the review you will do well.
He is terrible
OH MY GOD! Everyone says he's so funny...this is THE corniest man alive EVER! All his jokes are about beer...hello, are you a freshman in high school? That's the only time you brag or laugh about or tell jokes about beer!

Very loud and annoying voice that was sometimes distracting during lectures. His multiple choice were too hard for an entry level class but the full work problems will help get you some points.
easiest class ever!! if you semi pay attention in class and absolutely memorize every question on the practice tests then you can get an A in the class
He is the worst teacher I have ever had
Dr. Ries is quite a character. He comes in and does his job and does it well. He provides lots of supplements to help you out. But if you feel like you have to be babied and accomodated, don't take this class.
His examples were clear and the class wasn't all that hard. The jokes were corny but he has charm.
Good teacher, seems to love his job. The class was pretty easy, but I actually looked forward to coming to class.
He is VERY good in lecture. He uses a lot of helpful examples, and he's really clear and structured. It definitely seems that he's got everything together. He likes to be tricky on tests though. So you would have to take your time and double check the questions before moving on. He also has very limited b.s. tolerance.
Likes to tell bad jokes. Tests can be tricky if you haven't studied the practice tests. Overall a decent teacher who does his job pretty well.
Professor Ries is a wonderful Statistics teacher and one of the best math teachers I've ever had.
Turned a scary class into an easy one. Very clear in lecture. Lots of unrequired homework, but between lecture and doing the practice tests before exams, I did fine. Recommended.
the class was extremely easy. He started posting the notes for the first time in my class which made me not ever go to class. I didn't go since the second week of classes and I passed every test with flying colors. All you have to do is practice ALL of the seven tests he gives you online and the questions on your test will look almost identical.
Easy class. If you took high school stat and did well, you don't really even have to go to class (except lab), as long as you look at the notes online and do a few of the practice problems.
Very easy class, he knows what he is talking about, and as long as you practice the exams you will do great in this class!
easy class; states exactly what is expected; refer to his practice tests to study for the exam
I thought he was an easy teacher. The things I would recommend are to practice in the workbook and the exams. Also the review sessions before the test are vital. Attend them and your grade WILL improve.

if you come to class and work on his practice quizes/exams, you'll be fine.
Dr. Ries is a very interesting professor. If you take the initiative, he is very helpful. Some of your grade really depends on which TA you get. He puts a lot of faith in them.
Even though it may not seem like going to lecture is necessary, towards the end of the class you will be very confused if you don't go. Also, I didn't go to RSD but two times the entire semester and was fine. Just do a bunch of pratice tests before the exams and you should be fine.
funny professor. listen in lectures and do many practice test and will do fine
My grandma passed away during the semester I took his class and he was not willing to help me out in any way. I ended up getting a C+ which I was NOT happy about because I could have done a lot better if he would have had a heart.
I am absolutely horrible at math...barely passed pre-calculus...and I got a 97 in this class. Go to the lectures (going to section doesn't really do anything, most of the TA's are foreign, hard to understand, and not helpful) and do the practice tests he puts on Blackboard and you will be fine!
Probably the most fun you'll ever have in a math class. Go to lecture and everything will become clear; lots of examples, moves slowly, surprisingly funny for early in the morning. Watch out for the Isle of Capri and angel dust jokes; he's an odd duck, but that's what makes him a great teacher.
Funny as hell. Has perhaps the best voice I've ever heard from a professor, at least in terms of being able to pay attention.
Really enjoyed this teacher. Was great for explaining things and kept class very interesting. Old tests are offered for study guides which were great because tests were almost identical
Great teacher! Funny lectures, helpful examples, straight forward tests, optional homework. I never thought I'd get an A in math! Go to class and do the practice tests and you're set.
Very good teacher. Gives you all the resources you could need to succeed - posts power points on blackboard, comprehensive book problems, LOTS of practice exams (and answers). He's funny and maintains interest. Take his class. It's easy to get an A if you do the homework and tests. Didn't go to RSDs though, not necessary.
Larry is a very easy teacher. If you go to class, he makes it almost impossible for you to fail. He gives you all the things you need to get an A! Class can be somewhat boring, but its not bad.
Always opens with "Gooood morning class," and tries to relate his life to something he finds interesting/funny. The material can be boring and may induce slumber.
Go to class, takes notes, and use the old tests he provides to help study. If you do good on the practices tests you will do good on the actual test. If you don't figure out what you need to study cuz chances are it will be on there!!
This class is pretty easy. Take the previous years exams from practice and you should do fine. Lecture is boring, but somewhat helpful. RSD is often taught by grad students that are difficult to understand. Lectures are boring, but effective. You will do well if you attempt to apply yourself, professors corny jokes aside.
NOT A NICE GUY!!! DOESN'T ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO GO TO CLASS! AND MAKES IT INCONVENIENT TO ATTEND HIS OFFICE HOURS! AND NONE OF THE TA'S SPEAK ENGLISH!
He doesn't encourage his students to come to class because he puts them up on Tegrity. He was a good teacher however. He used real life applications and made learning statistics not so complicated. The formula sheet was a lifesaver too.
RSD's are pointless.Just about everyone I talked to quit going after the first few weeks and still have a good grade in the class. If you listen to lecture(he posts them all on blackboard)and go through the workbook problems as he does them in lecture. Also,I've found the best way to study is by using his old exams, which he posts.Great formula chart
Very easy class. Records and posts all lectures online along with past exams for practice. No attendance is taken at all. If you go to the lectures or watch them all online before an exam, youll do well. RSD's are pointless unless youre having trouble with the material.
if you go to class, it will be the easiest class you ever take. i studied the night prior for about and hour for every exam and got A's on all of them. he answers your questions after class if you want to ask them and the online quizzes are SUPER easy. great teacher.
Larry is really entertaining and tries to joke around to make class worthwhile for those who do attend his lectures (his powerpoints and lectures are also online). Quizzes are very easy, though they're only 4 questions, and tests are easy as well. The best way to review is by taking practice exams online!
He is a complete jerk and will not work with you on anything no matter the circumstances. Doesn't matter if you have a completely legit excuse for not being able to take a test, he won't care. He is the biggest jerk I've had for a teacher ever!!
Professor Ries does an excellent job of keeping students interested in stat. He also post all the classes and review online just encase you miss. The quizes are short only 15 mins to complete them though.
I would've had to tried to fail this class. Lectures are all online, plus sample exams. I hate stats and math, and this class was still a breeze for me.
Absolutely hate math, but loved this class! Ries makes it interesting, and easy to understand. I didnt even go to discussion section because he explained everything well enough in class. Take previous semesters exams as practice for tests and you should do just fine.
Discussion class was not helpful at all. All discussion leaders are foreign. Mine hardly knew English. When I came to pick up my test from her, it took her three tries to say "what's your name"! I tried to get Ries to help me find a new discussion class, but he was not helpful. The tests are not hard except I never had enough time to finish.
I asked him for help after trying tutoring, group tutoring, and talking to the discussion TAs (none of which have any sort of proficiency in English) and he had no other options. He does not make himself available for help near the end of the semester, when people need it most. My advice is to get a tutor you can really work with.
Never went to class but watched all the lectures and did a lot of practice tests and got an A.
Ries posts all of the lecture contene online as well as an entire archive of past exams. Therefore you never have to go to class; the course is very easy to self-teach.
Loved it. He is a very smart guy and a very good teacher. He has a bit of a dry voice, but don't mistake it for him being mean. He also puts all the lectures, slides and audio, on tegrity so if you ever miss class you have nothing to worry about.
No need to to actually go to class. All you need to do is study old/practice tests and your fine. Especially for the final. I thought the weekly homeworks and online quizzes were harder than the exams.
No need to to actually go to class. All you need to do is study old/practice tests and your fine. Especially for the final. I thought the weekly homeworks and online quizzes were harder than the exams.
Larry teaches a SUPER easy class. if you go to class, or watch the tegrity, you should pass. Study off of previous exams and you should do well!
If you fail this class with this prof drop out of college. If you haven't taken stat make sure you take this dude when you have to enroll in it. Guaranteed A-B
Ries explains well and is pretty nice. Sometimes it's difficult to understand the statistics TA's English, so I mostly skimmed his powerpoints and tegrity lectures which were well organized and developed.
Such an easy class, never went to any classes and got an A.
Easiest course I've taken at Mizzou but would not recommend if you have any interest in Statistics. You won't learn any more than what you might have learned in high school classes and will be bored by the professor's lack of enthusiasm and monotonous tone. You don't need to attend classes either as he posts everything on Tegrity.
Larry Ries is the reason I changed my major to Statistics! He is a super great teacher and MU couldn't have hired a more knowledgeable professor. You can tell that he cares about making sure you learn the material. He breaks it down to a science and uses PLENTY of examples. He's funny and you never have to come to class because everything's online!
Unless you learn easily with just the book, you will not understand a thing he says. In lecture, he reads his slides to you and just tells you the answer. Isn't much help at all. He doesn't explain things well and never explains how he came up with his answer.
Cancels lectures after big events on TV (Emmys, Super Bowl, etc.). Does not cooperate with regard to moving exam dates, passive aggressively barks at you through mass emails, very unpleasant. You will get an A, but you will not like it.
Larry is one of my favorite professors at Mizzou. He records all his lectures on tegrity, so you can easily get an A without going to class. There is a purple formula packet, as long as you know how to use it, you'll get an A.
He posts all his lectures on Tegrity, so it was a lot easier for me to go at my own pace, and if I needed to pause or rewind I could do so. I never really went to class and still got an A. He explains stuff pretty well and I heard he gave out m&ms to the entire lecture class once. Pretty awesome teacher
Ries is a pretty good teacher. You can watch all of his lectures on Tegrity ( and speed up the pace because he talks so slowly). But I've found that the best way to learn in his class is to actually read the chapter in the book before and then watch the lectures to help clear things up. In lectures, he doesn't go as in depth as the tests are.
Whenever you have to wake up 7 in the morning to go to class at 9, Dr. Ries is the best choice. He is very interested in the subject that he is teaching to students and that he will awaken and entertain you to listen to his lectures as if you're enjoying his class.
I think I would do better in this class if the test-taking time were longer; it is 25 questions in an hour and I always run out of time before the main writing portion. I'm very disappointed with the "discussion" section because there is no discussion, they just sit on the computer instead of actively helping students. you have to go to them.
He is a very good at his lectures. Everything is clear, everything is posted on Blackboard, and he religiously records on Tegrity. However, he is terrible to go to one-on-one. He makes you feel completely ignorant and speaks with a rather hateful tone. Luckily, this class is probably easy enough, you won't have to ask many questions.
Well the group weekly meetings you have with TA's are completely useless. None of my TA's spoke a word of english and couldnt help answer any questions I had when confused. His test suck because they are multiple choice which is fair than switch to show your work and its hard to gain any points when the TA's grade those parts so tough.
I hated this class. Larry is extremely strict and will make no exceptions. Don't bother going to the discussion as they're lead by foreign TA's that don't speak a word of English. You don't need to go to class either since he posts lectures online. Also DO NOT BUY THE BOOK! I literally did not open it and I am still mad I wasted $120 on it.
Larry clearly realizes that most of the students taking this class are not math or statistics majors. The material can be hard if you aren't used to it, but the formula packet is the holy grail. Also you don't have to go to class because all lectures are recorded on tegrity. I would also say the labs are pointless so don't go to those either.
He's horrible to go to for one-on-one help. I thought I should've had a different grade on an exam, and although it ended up being my own fault (which I accepted) he spoke very rudely to me and pretty much forced me out of his office. Other than that, lectures are okay but he doesn't give many examples.
Ries is good. It's an easy A--literally all you have to do is take a few of the practice exams that he posts on eRes, as all of his tests are the same thing, just different numbers. Makes stats simple.
Makes things easy and simple. Don't have to go to class, posts all lectures online. Gives practice tests from former years that are really helpful.
All lectures are posted online, so it's not mandatory to go to class. There's 1 online quiz and 1 online homework assignment a week, which are fairly easy. There are 3 exams, and 1 cumulative final. He posts past exams online and if you review those for the exams, you will be extremely prepared. Don't buy the textbook. You dont need it. Easy A.
He posts his lectures online, so you don't have to attend lectures. 1 homework and quiz a week. He drops the lowest homework and quiz grade at the end of the semester. He posts exams from past semesters online. There are 3 exams and 1 cumulative final. Use those exams he has posted because they help a lot!
Lectures are online and you'll want to watch them that way because he talks SO SLOWLY. I watched every lecture on 2x speed and he was speaking at a normal pace. The formula packet will be your best friend! It makes the exams a breeze. Pro tip: print the practice exams the week before the test!! If you wait till too late, the server gets overloaded.
Lectures are on Tegrity and textbooks are not needed. It doesn't hurt to go to lectures though- I took his class my 1st semester and now I am a junior and he is still one of the best professors I've had at lecturing. Very easy to understand. Get familiar with formula packets and do the sample exams. Easy A for me (a journalism major).
You don't have to go to the original class you signed up for, you can go to any of the ones that he teaches or watch on Tegrity. You are given a formula packet that you can use on the exams. He is very easy to understand, even on the Tegrity, which is straight from the morning lecture.
LARRY RIES IS THE BOMB WOW I have never had a math teacher as AWESOME as he is. You literally never have to go to class if you watch his super clear tegrity videos, and you get an INCREDIBLE formula packet for every test that helps you out so much. Leaving this class with a new found respect for statistics. YOU ROCK LARRY RIES KEEP DOING YOU!!!!!!
So let me preface this by saying I never once meet Larry. The course I took was exclusively taught by a TA which I found to be ridiculous. I personally believe he should had been involved in the class somehow, but this was not the case so watch out for getting a TA that does not speak English as their first language
You legit don't have yo go to class, just discussion. He posts everything online. Make sure to study with friends and do your best on tests. Easy B and most people will get a B+ in the class. Larry is really weird and may come off as rude, but he's very fair.
Pretty chill class. Tests aren't to bad at all... Basically exactly the example in the work book. Tegrity for every class. Theres some homework online but its not too bad if theres a group of you that can work together on it
Professor Ries talks really slow, so I recommend skipping class and watching Tegrity. The homework and quizzes aren't hard, and with the provided formula sheets the exams are pretty easy. My only complaint is he wasn't very friendly or approachable. Attendance only counts in discussion section if it will help your grade. Don't buy the textbook!
Meh. Material is boring. Study for the exams and know how to work out all the formulas. You get a formula sheet for exams. Weekly quizzes and homework. Dr. Ries lectures via tegrity, so you don't have to attend class. It's honestly just a boring class and Dr. Ries doesn't make the material interesting.
I am pretty good at math and found this class hard just because there is a ton of work into it. I didn't find the information as hard, but his tests were really hard and had to study a ton just to get a B on tests.
He is a super easy teacher. His lectures are clear and if you still don't understand him you can go to your discussion and the TA will help too. He also has tegrity and gives out tons of practice exams for each test. If you have to take stats take his class. Also attendance in lectures is not necessary unless you're struggling
lectures are available online so going to class is optional. discussion classes with teacher aids really helped clarify questions. there is a homework and quiz every week but lowest quiz and homework grade are dropped. easiest math class i have ever taken for sure
Class wasn't mandatory, all lectures were on tegrity however i do recommend actually going to class. Homework once a week, quizzes once a week. I thought i wasn't going to do well bc im not math oriented but i finished with an A in the class. He's very thorough and made me understand stats easily. Can be a little boring but solid class.
Super easy class with a professor who gives you all of the information that you need.
Great class, you dont always have to go. Easy A if you watch the videos, and a lot of practice exams that are just like the test and finals.
If you have a question, it's better to ask the TA's than Larry. He wouldn't always answer people's questions in class with the utmost respect. He talked negatively of his ex wife a lot, but the material was fairly easy to grasp if you watch the Tegrity videos or go to class.
I'm not good at math, so I had to work especially hard in this class. Tegrity wasn't cutting it for me and there were distinct verbiage differences between him and the book and an entire unit outside of the text. That being said, I emailed him for help and he was very off-putting, unhelpful and rude. Also left for a week the week before the final.
Class is almost exclusively online, so you don't even have to go to class. I went to the first week of lectures and never went again, and I got an A. Study for the exams, and take the practice tests so you know the format. He's very vocal about office hours and meeting with him for questions.
The class is very simple as long as you bother to listen in. You don't have to actually go to lectures - they're also posted online if you can't make it. You only need to show up for the labs once a week which are usually just used as time to do the weekly homework assignments. As long as you pay attention, it's pretty simple.
Do not take his class. He is a terrible teacher and the tests are worth 80% of the grade. Homework and quizzes are extremely easy but nothing like the exams. He is very rude and is unhelpful.
Ries' class is the hardest math class I've ever taken. I usually do very well in math and have no trouble but in his class, I struggled. Even after getting continuous help from my TA and acing all of the homework and quizzes, I still did awful on his exams. His exams don't reflect what he teaches in class or are significantly harder. Do NOT take!!!
Ries is great. He makes the lectures interesting. There are weekly quizzes and homework but they are not hard and if you are struggling you can go to the discussions and if you can't understand your TA you can go to a different TA for help. I did NOT think his grading was hard, its math you either get the right answer or you don't.
don't have to go to class, but make sure to watch tegrity. I struggle with math but this class was extremely difficult. Practice tests are somewhat helpful, but exams are way harder. Rude prof and TA's aren't much help. Do attend discussion classes tho. that attendance will help for bumping grade if needed. would recommend taking at comm college.
Math isn't exactly my favorite class but he made statistics very understandable. Everything was on powerpoints that were easy to read. Also puts his lectures online in case you miss class. I recommend going to lectures though and studying for the exams
I've sucked at math, but I've thoroughly enjoyed Ries' stats class. However, it's a very dangerous class in the grading sense. Three exams (60% of your grade), one cumulative final (30% of your grade), and the homework (10% in total) make up your total grade. You cannot afford to do poorly on the exams. It's an easy class, but you need to study it.
Larrys lectures are enjoyable and they are all posted online so you can watch them later and not go to the lecture. Class grade is mostly made up of tests so make sure you study! As long as you watch the videos or go to class you will do fairly well.
Dr. Ries explains concepts very clearly. He sends lots of canvas announcements for reminders. Do the practice tests when studying for the exams; they help a ton. The hmwk assignments are online and easy to get 100s on. If you put in some work, youll do well.
Dr. Ries explained things pretty well, and has a good voice. Kind of hot in an offbeat way. Funny.
I hate math and everything to do with it, but Larry was amazing. The way he explains concepts makes them SO easy to understand. Yes, he does Panapto but I would really recommend going to class. The discussion section was useless and I went maybe twice. Unless you have questions, it's not worth attending.
Excellent class, math is fairly straightforward, concepts are easy enough to grasp. Watch the videos (can be watched at 1.5x speed), do the practice question. You will get a good grade. Exam is the same exact format as the practice questions with different numbers. I used a $3 calculator and got an A!
SOOOOOOOO BORINGGGG. Talks extremely slow, takes super long pauses for no reason, and goes off on random tangents that have nothing to do with classes all the time.
Voice is monotoned and boringggggg - makes going to class really hard, but fi you go to class and pay 1/2 attention, you will get an A
He will post all the lecture slides and recording online so just view them at home at x2 speed since he speaks really slow. Exams constitute 90% of the course but they are really easy as long as you do the practice papers that are uploaded online! You will surely get easy A as the practice papers are very similar to the exams!
Larry is a pretty cool guy, even though I personally struggled with his class since I've always been bad at math-related courses. He does try to set his class up to have help available as much as possible from TAs, etc. The formula packets help too. If you're like me and struggle with math, watch his tegrities as MUCH as you can! Tests are big too
Really nice teacher and very helpful. I got the feeling that he just wants to help the kids learn and have an enjoyable time. No doom and gloom like a lot of profs.
Lectures are heavy and he talks really fast, but he's a really funny guy and makes coming to a non-mandatory attendance class worth it.
Larry is one of my favorite professors. He is rather knowledgeable, and he actually makes going to lecture quite fun and entertaining. Some may say his pace is slow, but its actually better because he allows time for you to grasp the information. He wants you to succeed and he holds you accountable for all your work.
Can't say I actually learned a lot from this class, felt like the content itself is pretty basic. Easy to watch lectures on line (on double speed - he's a slow talker) and get by just fine. Never went to discussion; if you put in the time with homework and practice times and make sure you understand the content you'll be good for the tests.
Ries is not that bad of a professor. He does lecture really slow and boring, but he posts his lectures online, so really you don't have to go. He tries to make the class interactive which makes it better if you do go. If you suck at stats it's not the easiest class but he gives lots of resources for help.
You don't have to read the textbook or do any of the optional homework problems. All of the past exams are on eRes, and he changes the numbers in the problems but that is it. It's kinda funny how easy it is actually. Like I think if I took it in high school it would be more difficult.
Larry was a fun professor. His lectures were pretty boring but he cares about his students. In high school, I couldnt do math. I got an A- in this class. Big tip: do webwork during your discussion class. I did that and always finished within the hour. The TAs are very helpful.
Pretty standard stats professor. Not great, not bad.
As long as you keep up with the work and lectures, youre totally fine. He posts everything on canvas so you dont actually have to go to class. Just try to keep up with the lectures because they can feel long if you have to do several in a day. Read the emails he sends and syllabus and youll stay informed but he does respond to emails quickly
nice guy really funny, posts lectures to panopto so no need to go to class just watch and make sure you understand examples, online homework is pretty easy, dont really need to read online textbook, 4 tests are multiple choice & written but super easy if you understand workbook practice test, discussion is optional only go if you have questions
There is no one worse at math than me. Going in to this class, I was terrified, but ended up getting an A! The class is truly not very difficult and Ries seems to understand that this is just a required intro level course for most people. He makes the content easy to understand and explains it slowly and deliberately, which was so helpful for me.
Professor Ries was a good teacher, but didn't have the best personality. He was rude to students for their internet going out during a test and needing to retake it. Elementary-level math course for me. If you watch the lectures and did the online homework, you'll be fine. Barely used my textbook. Drops the lowest test score and two lowest homework
He definitely knows what he's talking about when he's teaching stats. He could work on being a little more personable. His lectures are hard to watch since he talks like a game show host and yells the whole time. The one time I reached out w a question and a personal situation he sent me the link to a canvas reminder. Very happy to be done.
He makes it clear in the beginning your lowest test score gets dropped and the two lowest homework gets dropped, but there's no extension on dates at all. He explains that's his "built-in" flexibility for emergencies. His classes are really easy. If you watch his zooms or recordings you'll be fine. I barely used the textbook.
Easy if you put in the work. He's kind and takes class slow so that it's easier to keep up.
Pretty easy class just make sure to do the webworks. The quizzes are similar to problems on the webworks.
Easy class, requires minimal effort. As long as you do the webworks and understand how to do all the problems, you should not have any issues with the quizzes. Never read the book or did the recommended practice problems, but good if you need some extra practice.
Dr. Ries's STAT 1200 class is one of the easiest courses I've ever taken. Homework was due once a week (on Monday nights) and quizzes were every other Tuesday. These are the only things you will be graded on, so you'll want to prepare for them, but if you did the homework and wrote down the lecture notes you will be completely fine. Easy A.
Dr. Ries made his lectures pretty easy to follow, but if you don't go to class you'll be able to catch up. There was a homework assignment for each chapter but most of the time you get unlimited attempts. Rather than big exams, there are quite a few mini-quizzes (3-10 questions) if you need help the TA's are there for you.
Stat 1200 was a very easy A. I rarely went to class and did fine. Your grade is entirely webwork homework and online quizzes, both of which are open book and have a formula sheet with every formula you'll ever use. Lowest homework and quiz scores are dropped. TA's are there to help you in discussion if you don't understand anything.
Dr. Ries is a great professor. He has simple expectations: a homework assignment and short quiz each week over a couple of chapters covered in lecture, using the online website Webwork. They are all open-note and quick, and you can use his formula sheet for them. If you watch his recorded lectures, or attend the class in person, you should be ok!
Dr. Ries has got his format of teaching down. He clearly states every due date in the syllabus and makes an announcement every week to ensure students know what will be going on. He is very positive and easily approachable.
Lectures are easily accessible and easy to understand. Quizzes were straightforward and followed the class examples and homework.
Likes to talk a lot about things that aren't important to the class and tends to get off topic
He posts his lectures online and is good about sending out reminders for deadlines. He is a pretty snarky guy, so I can see why he rubs some people the wrong way, but I don't find him that off-putting. This class is also super easy. If you are able to complete the homework without problems, there is no need to go to discussion.
If you have dealt with any sort of trauma growing up do not take his class as his emails are aggressive and rather triggering. Went to ask for help and was met with rudeness as well.
It has been some time since I had the professor, but I have vowed to give him a proper rating. He is very cold and unempathetic to his students. Had to go on a deployment that semester. My schedule conflicted with class. I asked for consideration in this. He said he was not able to and the only advice he could give me, was to withdraw.
I've never really been good at math and this was a pretty easy class. Homework covers what you learn in lecture and theres quizzes every two weeks that are very similar to the homework. Quizzes are also open note/book and taken online. Take good lecture notes and you'll be fine.
He was very clear and really had his format down. Class could be attended live or online, and he covered what was on the tests and quizzes. Somehow statistics wasn't my most boring class thanks to him!
He's pretty much there just to get you out with a passing grade. The system he uses for homework and quizzes is weird but they are pretty easy until the end where you will have to work just a little bit harder than what you were doing before which is most likely nothings. His lectures are super boring just watch the lecture at home or read the book
Overall, it was pretty easy, you don't have to go if you don't want to but at least watching the recorded lectures is helpful. All tests and homework are open note, and all tests are weighted the same including the final.
I took it online so I just watched recorded lectures, but he seems like a great prof and person. His class is the first time I've ever laughed in math class because he tells hilarious stories. Very easy as long as you read the slides, but quizzes are worth a lot so try hard.
Easy A. Watch the lectures, take notes, and use the formula sheet like your life depends on it. There was homework like every other week that took 15 minutes and quizzes every 2 weeks that took 5 minutes. Put the lecture in 2x speed and you won't spend more than 2 hours on this class a week. So easy and well-taught.
Honestly, I never went to lecture and you aren't required too, I only ended with a B because I did badly on one quiz. Quizzes are taken online anytime between noon-midnight and are open book. Could easily end with an A if you do a little prep before each quiz. Only homework and quizzes.
He wants you to get a good grade, so he is there to help. However, your grade is based on homework and quizzes (which are weighed like tests). You fail one quiz and your grade will drop significantly. Dr. Ries is laidback and knows how to push info out to students electronically. If you are taking the "in-person" section, he doesn't require you go.
Professor Ries' STAT1200 is a manageable class if you stay on top of the weekly quizzes and use resources like unstuck AI alongside the lectures. Attendance is required but the material is straightforward, and you can get an A with minimal effort.
This class was super easy. Watch the lectures and you'll pass easily.
There is a textbook, but do not get it. He posts his lectures online so you do not have to go, but he only mentions one useful thing in each lecture. Tests are 80% of the grade, but they are online.
He is great! The class can be taken fully online, but make sure you watch the lectures! Tests are worth a lot of points so make sure you study and don't miss any!
Grades very easy but he is pretty rude and unhelpful
He has timed quizzes which should honestly speak for itself. He gives you 24 minutes to complete 18-20 questions. His lectures are so painfully boring and he is not flexible with late work whatsoever. Would only tell someone to take this class if they actually needed it.
I took DATA1030 the first time it was offered so the class was a little rough around the edges but it was good. I think Larry expects us to have some statistics knowledge before the class. Lots of lectures about statistics and a few R assignments+labs. Labs/tests are not open book but the HW before it is so similar you can use it to study.
Very easy class: 3 exams very similar to 3 corresponding homeworks, & a simple project comprise your grade. There really isn't much coding involved; it's mainly simple statistics. The prof is nice but the lectures aren't super interesting and he spends a lot of time going over not much content. There isn't attendance and he records lectures
Quizzes are graded 85% of your entire grade,100 points for 10-12 questions. I scored a 60 on a quiz and had to ace several quizzes to finish with an 87. No quiz drops, no extra credit, everything is online. He doesn't even teach in class; he stands there and provides surface-level explanations on slides that also fail to clarify anything.
The content in the class itself was fairly easy, my only issue was the way it was graded. 9 quizzes are basically your entire grade, and doing bad on one of them can easily ruin your grade for the entire semester. Quizzes are also only 12 questions so getting a few questions wrong can really mess you up.
Overall good professor! I was signed up for his in person lecture but after a while I just started watching his lectures online still got full attendance points. His exams are very very easy.
I struggled in this course because the lectures did not provide support for students who need material broken down clearly. There were limited opportunities to ask questions or revisit confusing concepts. I believe the course would benefit from teaching methods that recognize different learning styles.
He is a great lecturer, his quizzes are incredibly easy, easy to follow lectures, in person attendance is optional as you can watch the same lectures online for full credit, and not a lot of homework assigned. love this guy fr
The class focused almost entirely on tests due to the professor's worries about students using AI to cheat, and I ended up learning almost nothing. We barely used R, and the 3 HW assignments didn't actually teach the material well but were only for test prep. Don't take this class unless you have to or until they improve the content and structure.
Dr Reis not only talks in slow motion, but also describes things in a very confusing way. However, the material itself isn't super hard. I just had to teach myself different ways from YouTube. The hw tends to be harder than the quizzes. You can show up or watch online for attendance. Textbook is optional, but definitely get the workbook!!
This class is a breeze if you've taken AP stats in high school; they're exactly the same. The homework is fairly easy and can be used as a study guide for the exams. No quizzes and only one final project at the end of the semester. Exams are worth 75% of your grade and are pretty short which sucks.
Dr. Ries is a pretty good professor all things considered. I'd say that more than anything - at least if you plan to take STAT1200, whether for major or as a gen-ed, study - the grades are mostly based on quizzes, but should be pretty simple. Watch the lectures on Canvas as they're posted there too and you should do OK.
