I don't enjoy the ACTUAL class, PSYC 1, but Rudiger is a pretty good teacher. Somewhat boring class, so it's hard to stay focused, but he is decent...
larry rudiger is my favorite professor in 4 years at uvm. its a huge class so its hard for one-on-one contact, but hes funny and witty and really loves teaching. started usng technology that really helped in a big class if you don't like to talk a lot. wouldn't recommend him for psyc 1 because of the course, but take ANYTHING with him!!!!
really funny teacher, wants everyone to do well, makes attendance enjoyable with funny stories, pictures, and videos in his slides that relate to the material... all around good guy... highly reccomended
Larry makes Psyc 1 enjoyable with amusing stories, videos, and a friendly demeanor. Class is well-organized and extremely straight-forward (almost to the point of monotony), and the material is interesting enough. Larry makes all the difference, however. Recommended highly!
Awesome guy, and funny too. He loves those sign waves.

Awesome, funny, great teacher. Overall, a pretty hot guy.
he's awesome and definately colorful
He is a really funny teacher; makes learning interesting.
This guy is a great teacher, and he keeps his class interesting. There were so many extra credit opportunities in this class that I don't know how anyone could get less than a B but some people did. If you do the quick homework assignments you're SO money.
Annoying but does try to make the class as interesting as possible. I hate the iclickers word of advice DON"T FORGET YOUR CLICKER EVER. best thing is the use of note sheets for tests those saved my life

Does a great job with the online classroom environment - I actually felt like a part of a class with the way he structured it. Interesting character, good psych teacher. Easy A.
super funny guy, fun to be around
Nice guy, lots of busy work, easy A.
Awesome guy. Helps keep this incredibly boring class a bit fun and interesting. Class was a waste of time both inside and outside of the actual classroom.
awesome class
Oh.My.God. I absolutely despised this class. It was awful. So much busy work and completely pointless. He did not allow our class to have the one-page "cheat sheet" for our tests so it made them super hard. Also, the questions were about the most trivial things in the chapters. I can't believe I wasted so much of my time.
POINTLESS and waste-of-a-time class but Larry is cool I guess. the classroom was always stifling hot so i could never pay attention but that wasnt his fault. sometimes he doesnt explain things very clearly but other than that he gets side tracked easily
The class pretty much is the text book...and online writing assignments and quizzes. Class is mandatory--attendance taken with iClicker. Kind of a stressful class because he calls on people randomly, and people get participation points (part of the grade). Prof Rudiger is a cool guy though. He's funny and tries to keep the class interested.
His personality is approachable but pointless due to the class (and department) structure. Even though I only came to class for attendance, I enjoyed the lectures because he made them engaging. I definitely recommend him and this class.
He asks questions in class but he doesn't word the questions clearly so it's always a guess what he is actually asking. He randomly calls on people in class to answer the questions and you get negative points if you don't know the answer. You have to say something in class to get a good grade...there are like 160 people in the class. AVOID HIM!
Larry's a good guy he has a lot of students i think everyone should cut him a break... the only thing thats terrible is the "learning" chapters that are never gone over at all
Larry is very witty. He keeps the class interesting. While the class is very text heavy, the only issue I have with the text is in the introduction chapters, primarily because of length. He expects a lot from his students, and if you show up and do the work (plentiful, but helpful), you'll get a good grade. Relies on Blackboard for work submission.
Engaging? Please! This class is absolutely terrible, and every person I've talked to agrees. You never know exactly what he's asking, the chapters are dull and boring, and while he may crack a few jokes in class, they are far and in between and don't make up for how awful the rest of the time is. He's got a major superiority complex as well. Ugh.
Funny guy, great lectures
Pretty miserable class. Mandatory attendance, difficult quizzes, monotonous group writing assignments, and claustrophobic class settings. Rudy's a smart guy, but his pretentious way of speaking and overall uselessness will get to you by the first month of class. Just do the extra credit, read the book, and get together with friends for the quizzes.
I'd actually criticize this guy as a teacher, but that would have meant he actually taught us stuff. He's probably one of the worst professors I've ever had at UVM. His quizzes are stupid, his tests are impossible, and those questions he poses in class are useless. Avoid taking this class. Terrible, terrible teacher.
i hate you! YOU RUINED MY LIFE!
It is not a difficult class. The tests have not been that bad and the quizzes are open notes so you can usually get most of them right. But, the homework assignments are a pain. They are due at weird times like 26 hrs before class and it is very easy to miss the deadline. Also, he randomly calls on people during class which can be nerveracking.

WORST CLASS EVER! I took it online because i thought i could escape rudiger, but nope! The assignments are ridiculous and he just likes to cram all the assignments into one week along with an exam! Thanks professor.
Everyone needs to realize that Psych 001 is there to weed out people. The reading assignments suck and the material can be boring however Larry tries to make it entertaining. He is the only reason I didn't fall asleep in class and he is usually pretty funny
Rudiger seemed okay at the beginning, but soon it became clear that going to class was essentially a waste of time (although attendance was mandatory). The class was run as a discussion, with Rudiger asking questions and students answering the questions - although students answers only served to make things more confusing. A stupid, but easy class.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. Do not take it unless it is mandatory to you major. You have been warned. He somehow expects you to participate in a class of over 150 kids, and read the ENTIRE textbook, but ask you about minute details. Drop this class if you can.
Not a horrible professor, just doesn't know how to teach large lectures. Read the text, do ALL of the writing assignments, go t class, and participate once in a while to get a decent grade. The comprehensive final seems daunting, but is so general that it saved my grade.
Disliked the class completely. It was not what I expected, and nothing in class can be learned or comprehended. Discussions make everything much more confusing.
I know that a lot of people rate him poorly but I really think they are rating the class and that is probably because Psyc should not be their major Psyc001 is nothing compared to the higher level courses like 110 and it's not meant to be a fun elective it's meant to prepare you for a writing/research intensive field.
ok. so this class caused me so much trouble throughout the term. it stressed me out and i thought the whole time i would fail. but there are so many opportunities to get extra credit, i didn't even think about it while doing it (for example i did all the writing assignments and attended MOST classes. i got an A. larry is really funny sometimes.
way too intense for an intro class. lots of reading, quizzes, mandatory attendance/participation. fair tests though. I spent more time on this class than my science and calc classes combined. totally lost interest in psych. he himself isn't too approachable although he appears it during class. full of himself.
Full of himself. Book is made by the UVM psyc department and contains numerous non-real words. Cannot take time out of his "busy" schedule to meet with students and sends you to a bunch of grad students who often dont know whats going on. The class is a complete joke and the only reason to go is mandatory attendance policy. Easy but awful class
Brilliant teacher. He actually makes you learn, and think about the topic you are discussing. The class may seem hard if you are looking for an easy A and aren't interested in Psyc, but if you are smart you will appreciate him. He is also hilarious.
Larry has some ego problem, he has no time to help his students. He is very rude also even when you are talking with him he will walk away from you and say he is busy or getting late. Absolutely disrespectful sometimes.
Biggest ego ever. done. but....semi brilliant..... kinda like.. House?
Is not engaging and does not care about his students. It is very clear that teaching is merely a job not a passion.
He has a distinct system for teaching the class which causes many students to feel like one of his experiment subjects. He forces all students to participate in 180+ student lectures by keeping track of participation on a computer and randomly calling on them. He refuses to answer any questions and instead refers them to the "psych 1 office".
we basically learn from the book, which is a sham. It is riddled with errors, and I'm not talking about the content. The book constantly contradicts itself from one sentence to the next. Also be aware that you will be reading chapters weeks in advance of when you will be discussing them. and discussion is 80%-90% of the class-time.
He doesn't do anything. You have to do all the readings, learn all the material yourself, then get tested on it. He shows stupid slideshows that don't help you learn and loves the iClicker. He is absolutely worthless.
absolute worst. ever!
Look, I'm in his class now and I can honestly say that I look forward to going to it. Larry is a GREAT professor and DOES care about his students. He has always taken the time to help me out when I've had a question and out of the 230 kids in my class he knows my name, if you give him mediocre work he'll give you a mediocre grade. Put in effort
the worst teacher i have ever had, in high school and college. boring. annoying. dumb test grading method.
I feel bad for larry because he gets so much heat for trying to get all his students to actually do their work. Psych 1 is a great course if your interested and ready to keep up with work, which I found refreshing rather than zoning out half the semester. LARRY CARES AND IS THE MAN!!!
This textbook is the most worthless, irritating thing I've ever been subjected to. Psychology has been butchered for me thanks to this class.
The class was generally disorganized, but the information was interesting. I think Rudiger is misunderstood. People think he is how he appears and I feel he wants you to think that. He is a psychologist...so he obviously wants to get a certain reaction out of you based on his actions. He is a very busy person too
I have really learned alot from him, more than I thought I would get out this class. I only hope I can remember half of it! He is funny and really knows what he is talking about. If you do the homework and kinda pay attention during lecture its an easy A.
The class was not difficult but there was A TON of buy work. He acted as if he was too good for his students and his response to almost every question you asked him was, "That's something you're going to e-mail the psych 1 office about..". He never showed up to his review sessions or exams and the class was rather dull.
Larry Rudiger was the worst teacher I have ever had. He never met with students and a lot of kids struggled to even get by. WORST CLASS EVER!
Worst professor every! He doesn't do a thing and won't meet with students. His TA's do everything. This class is extremely hard and should be more than 3 credits. It was an awful class and most of the students hated it.
He is boring, doesn't teach anything, you learn solely from reading from the textbook. The class overall isn't difficult, pretty easy actually, but he is not a good teacher.. the TA's do everything. Don't expect much from him, as long as you read, you'll be fine.
THE WORST CLASS EVER. ruined psychology for me. he doesn't teach you anything. switch out of the class before it's too late.
He was really enthusiastic the entire time. He enunciates everything and is incredibly well educated in psychology. For example, when ever he calls on somebody (class participation is required) they will say something and he will expand on what ever it is so that it is clear to everybody and you learn more from it.
Rudiger means best, he is a nice guy and all, but I mean, this class is kinda really stupid, its all self taught, class is just a waste of 2 1/2 hours a week. He doesn't even let you email him directly. He is difficult to work with. Just switch out
The material isn't hard, but it is a lot of work. There is mandatory attendance and weekly assignments, but you really learn the material. Larry is a great guy and the class is always laughing. He is really busy, but he cares.
This class involves a lot of reading and work on your own, but it is definitely worth it to keep up with everything. If you do the work, you'll do fine in the class. Larry is an extremely knowledgeable professor and I enjoyed his class. He has a lot of enthusiasm for his job.
He's funny sometimes and really enthusiastic, but the class was not all that interesting. Mainly based on research, which I suppose is UVMs fault not his, but still..
He is incredibly enthusiastic, and really funny ? overall he has a wonderful personality in my opinion ? but his teaching style is far from wonderful. There is a huge disconnect between what we were reading and what we discussed in class. However, almost everyone has to take this class, and it's not awful, just make sure you do all the work!
This class is a lot of reading and has multiple assignments every week. By the end of the class you do end up learning a lot but it is not fun in the process.
He is the best professor I have had so far, people think the class is bad cause of him but its really just the material and the way the class is structured, he is a great guy! He also sang to us at the last day of class and it was AMAZING! I recommend him to others in a heart beat!
Larry isn't a bad professor at all. The only reason I hated this class was because of the way the class was. Attendance was part of your grade. A computer called your name to answer questions and you'd be nervous day in and day out. The TA's are horrendous people who grade unfair. Then the tests were too memorizy from the book for me.
overall good professor, their are a lot of assignments but they grade easy. its easy to get a lot of extra credit. tests are around 50-85 multiple choice questions, the final is around 200. just give some effort and you will do well.
I only heard terrible things about Larry, so I started off hating him but by the end of the class I loved him. If you just accept him for how stubborn arrogant and how much he loves himself the class is okay. You basically learn from the book. Questions from writing assignments/quizzes/and class are all on the test. You must try to do well.
He expected you to be committed to the class by giving homework assignments that took up a ton of time every week. Luckily the TAs were helpful and graded easily. Tests are pretty hard, he puts random questions on them
Larry is really nice, I have nothing against him as a person. However, the class itself was boring, and the only purpose of the iclickers was to make sure we were awake throughout the class. The only difficult things were the tests and final, but if you study, you'll do fine.
Funny guy, not always perfectly clear. Knows what he's talking about. TA's grade a bit unfairly. Do the work efficiently and do well. Don't do it, and you'll struggle. Whether you sink or swim is up to you
Larry is the man! He's so funny and a great professor
He is an excellent professor. It's clear what's expected of you, the TA's are available, he will listen to your ideas, and you get out of this class what you put into it. It's not a free A but it's not like trying to kill a T-Rex with your bare hands. He made the time to talk to me about German for 30 minutes. AWESOME.
I don't know why people think that Rudiger is such a horrible teacher. He's quite funny at times. He's also really nice. If you take this class, be sure to go to the office hours to review tests when available! Also review quiz answers; they are available on Bb after the time to do them is over. This class is pretty interesting too :)
Great guy, Funny and always has time for the students if you commit
goes off on tangents, exams extrememely hard
This guy doesnt teach a class he makes you jump through hoops.
This class was okay, but I extremely disliked Rudiger. I felt like he was disrespectful to the class as a whole and claimed we were being childish when we complained. He doesn't teach, but you have to go to class because he takes attendance. The way he grades tests is completely unfair and awful. I hope I never even have to see this man again.
Basically he is a huge jerk who does not care about his students. The class is not very difficult as long as you read the textbook and do the assignments. A lot of students are required to take his class so if you are one of them, good luck. Make sure you do not miss a class.
If your feelings are easily hurt or you just don't have a sense of humor, avoid Rudiger. He's actually a really nice guy and is really hilarious, his jokes just go over most people's heads. He's the best teacher I've ever had.
Rudiger is great! the homework assignments are long and tedious, but the class itself isn't bad, and the information is interesting. However, you have to be there to do every clicker question or you can't get some of the credit points.
Professor Rudiger is awesome. He uses entertaining stories to present psychological concepts thereby making them easy to remember. This class requires a lot of reading and the tests truly try your knowledge meaning that they are not easy either. However, if you do the work that is required of you, you will be fine.
This class and professor are awful.
Horrible class and horrible teacher.
A requirement with A LOT OF WORK. TONS of reading and writing assignments with multiple quizzes weekly. You learn more yourself than from the class. Rudiger seems like a fun guy in lecture, but if you talk to him he is rude and short-not very helpful at all. I wouldn't recommend this class at all if it's not required
He does try to be helpful entertaining and enthusiastic but his classes are a little boring. He gets distracted very easily about his personal life, and is sometimes not very clear about course material/requirements etc...
Rudiger is an amazing professor that really knows his stuff. He wants you to do well but he will make you work your ass off for a good grade. He's funny and explains things well. There is a lot of work. Assignments are basically do every day of the week. Grading system is complicated. You need to do the work. Just remember: Life isn't fair.
Rudiger is great! It is a lot of work, and its a class that you have to be very disciplined and independent in learning and doing the work. Exams really carry your grade, but there are oppurtunities for extra credit. He is funny, approachable, and loves what he does.
Pretty heavy work load for an introductory level class, but it is of course manageable if you choose to put in the time. I enjoyed Rudiger, he has a great, witty sense of humor. You never knew what pictures he'd throw up on a slide.
Funny, enthusiastic, and reassuring. But an OVER-explainer. Research Methods is hardly a 100 level class, but I felt like I was being babysat. Something was due every day of the week, including pointless "Concept Checks." Attendance is mandatory and the TAs do all of the grading. I liked him as a person, but he ran his class like a preschool.
The worst professor I've had so far. Don't ever take his class.
Larry was a friendly and funny professor. Although he was a nice guy this class was very confusing. He claims that if you do well on the exams, everything else is optional which is untrue. I went through all of the exams with A's and when my final grade came around i had a D-. He has way too much going on from writing assignments/concept checks
His lectures were very confusing and his powerpoints were kind of a mess. He's not boring or anything, but it was hard to make sense of the material and I had to rely on the book to get decent grades on the exams.
One of my favorite classes. It can be hard but you will do fine if you put the effort it and find the material interesting. Rudiger is awesome.
Honestly, I can self-teach myself pretty easily so this class wasn't too hard for me. But, it requires a LOT of studying since the lectures were not helpful at all. I was falling asleep for half but you have to attend because he uses the iclickers for attendance. If you can, I would avoid. Very boring. It was required for my major.
This class is absolutely terrible. Rudiger is a really nice guy, but he was not made to teach. He spends a lot of time telling you to properly take notes but rarely ever gives notes. Most of your time you'll memorize vocab out of the book for his tests. Avoid this class at all costs.
Rudiger is a nice guy but very skatter brained. His class made no sense to me whatsoever, made me hate psych and undeclare it as my major. He also makes you answer clicker questions every two seconds of class which is annoying. His tests are hard& you have to rate your confidence on all of the questions which wastes time and brings down your grade.
This class is absolutely terrible. I went in never having taken a psych class before and I will leave it never wanting to take one again. He is boring, doesn't teach, and isn't helpful. I suggest everyone avoid psych 001 and him as a professor.
In all honesty, at the end of his class I was very satisfied. Sit closer to the front of the class, listen to what he says, and actually do the things he tells you to do for studying. You have to be self sufficient in this class, but once you figure that out, you will do just fine. he does have good stories, remembering them helped me during exams.
I really hate the confidence ratings. Every other question on the exam is a rating of your confidence. If you rate yourself incorrectly you loose credit on the exam. I lost 18% on my last test. I don't like this class and while people were helpful; with the confidence ratings this class sets students up to fail.
I enjoyed Larry's lectures a lot and although there are a lot of things to keep track of at the beginning of the semester, you get used to it and getting an A or a good grade is completely in your control.
If you can at all costs take this online WITHOUT him being your instructor or take it with a different instructor. The class was awful, boring, and not help what so ever. You'll spend your time memorizing well over 500 flash cards. This class sets student up to fail easily and it's quite sad. WAY TOO hard for an 001 class that's for sure!
WAY too hard for an intro course. The lectures barely covered any material and the exams were brutal. AVOID THIS AT ALL COSTS IF POSSIBLE. If you can take it with another teacher, do. Professor Rudiger is kind of strange and not that helpful.
An extremely entertaining professor! He mentions how students only remember 20% of each lecture so -- 40% of each lecture covers class material and 60% he fills with good/memorable examples and funny stories. Everything that is included on exams is covered in the text- read BB articles carefully, they are on the last section of each exam.
Rudiger was one of the worst professors I have had. His tests are way too detailed and difficult for an introductory course. He was never completely clear about the topic material.
Awesome teacher with an unconventional approach to class. If you paid attention in class, and "knew what you knew" then it was easy to use them to get MORE than 100% credit on questions you were completely sure of, and reduce the point penalty on questions you guessed on. He's very personable, and cares about students. One of my favorite professors
Larry Rudiger is one of the most helpful professors you will find at UVM. Unlike a lot of other professors, he truly cares about how you do in his class and in life. If you have trouble with his classes go to his office hours and he will undoubtedly help you with whatever you need. Awesome human being right here.
I'm not sure why everyone is calling him a difficult professor. Boring, yes, but difficult? Pretty much just read the textbook, you could sleep through class if you wanted to and still get an A. He's a cool enough guy, not his fault the material is dry. Plus, if you do well on the tests you only have to answer 20 or so question on the final!
Good professor.
Although this class makes it appear easy - 600 points are available but your grade is out of 500 - the exams are extremely difficult. He also adds an extra question on your confidence about whether or not you think you answered the question correctly - and subtracts points if you say you are confident but get the question wrong. I HATED THIS CLASS
Rudiger is a good speaker and seems to be really passionate about psychology....but sometimes the lecture was EXTREMELY boring. Also, the grading system is AWFUL. His "confidence ratings" DESTROY your grade. Rudiger himself is fine and sometimes funny, but the class needs to be overhauled. Literally unavoidable if you have to take psych at UVM.
Seems like a nice guy at first but thats not the case
Very good teacher. The class was very simple as long as your willing to read the textbook and study.
Attendance is not mandatory, but extra points are given. Some of his exams are tricky, but very easy material as long as you study and pay half attention. I feel like I have to read the chapters, because he doesn't exactly outline the chapters for you during lecture. Grades on a point scale of up to 610, where you only need 500 to receive an A+.
I'm not sure why people are saying this class is hard, it's the easiest class of all time. Exams aren't hard as long as you know the terms and it's all multiple choice so you don't need a deep understanding of anything and you can literally skip parts of the class and still get an easy A+ because you only need 500 out of a potential 610 points
Good class, had to study a lot
Uses psychological principles of learning to teach. This entails completing small assignments all the time to reinforce material. Therefore, I retained a huge amount of it over time. Although the material at times was simplistic, I thought this was the best TAUGHT class I have taken.
600 some points available in the class, but he grades out of 500 (so basically 100 free points). Read the book and take notes, show up to class for the clicker questions, because you just have to answer to get the points. The online assignments every week may seem tough, but they're not graded on accuracy. Not a super helpful guy, but class is easy
He is an entertaining lecturer. His tests are hard, but he makes the grading system easier every semester. He no longer does the confidence rating that everyone complains about, so now if you put in any effort, you can get an A.
Worst Professor I have ever had. He never focused on anything that the exams were on and I never knew my grade until it was finalized. Horrible experience.
He was very disorganized. All over the place during lectures.
His lectures were pretty pointless, and you teach yourself everything. He assigns a lot of work, and the tests are long, hard, and cover a lot of material, but at the end of the semester you can re take any of them. Would not recommend this class.
I would definitely recommend taking the summer online course for psych 001. I was originally taking the regular course during spring semester and was really struggling with it. When I talked to Rudiger, he suggested the summer course. I ended with an A+. There is no comparison.
Larry is the man. His classes are phenomenal, easily one of my favorite professors at UVM. Hands down gives the best lecturers I've ever seen. He literally uses every trick in the book on presentations to absolute perfection. His passion and delivery are unparalleled. Psych 001 with the guy should be a must take for every UVM student.
Even though I only went to class five times I did all the assignments and just guessed on them or googled the answers. I lost some participation points by doing this but not much. He lets you retake all of the exams which I did and I got a B in his class. He is so confusing. You will constantly be wondering what your grade is the entire semester.
This class: Feels like you can't understand. Lots of vocab. Learn it all. Confusing lectures. A psych experiment of "and this is how students learn best because a paper says so." Breathe. You'll feel like you're panicking until you realize you can retake every test as the final. That will save your grade.
After graduating from UVM, I can say that Professor Rudiger was the worst professor of my college career. The worst part about this class is not that it's boring or that he doesn't do a good job of explaining the material, it's the fact that he REFUSES TO INTERACT WITH STUDENTS. He won't talk before class, after class, or give out his email!
Doesnt explain anything in class, iust talks about random things that dont make sense. Gives alot of homework that you do through a program called acrobatiq which is also where you take quizzes, basically you teach yourself dont expect him to help you. Wouldnt even bother going to class if it wasnt for the iclickers
The online textbook, concept checks, and quizzes tell you everything you need to know... going to class is not essential unless you want participation points. In order to get an A, one needs to get 465 out of 610 possible points for the semester. Exams themselves make up 500, and you can retake them all. It's an ok class, but Larry is not helpful
Rarely schedules class, bleak and basic powerpoints, and arbitrary test information summarizes his teaching style. Class size is 150, average attendance is 40. Also, a graduate TA would conduct the test review sessions for each unit, and the entire unit's material was more effectively summed up in 50 minutes than all of Larry's lectures.
Interesting guy who doesn't care what you think of him. If you're being disrespectful in class he will call you out on it. Puts a lot of personal touches into his lectures and makes the time pass quickly. Funny guy. Highly recommended for psyc 001. Easy class if you do the homework. Exams are straightforward and all multiple choice.
The class is so easy, but the online homework takes forever, and the program is poorly put together. The material is mostly self explanatory. Rudiger is an entertaining lecturer; he covers random parts of the material that might be confusing or interesting. Calls out people for being on phone,or sitting on floor in the back of class. loves his cats
This was a was a disaster. I ended up with a good grade because I like and naturally get the material, but everything was confusing. There wasn't any communication between the TAs and Rudiger, and all of the assignments on the syllabus were completely changed. He puts recordings of the class & powerpoint online. TA review sessions really helpful.
Lots of time needed for homework but its interesting & engaging. Dr. Rudiger was entertaining & fairly clear in lecture; course was organized and supported different learning strategies. Catching him before class is tough because he is setting up but always approachable after class/office hours. Sign up early for mandatory research participation.
Rudiger was one of the worst professors I've ever had. We were his first Research Methods class and it was obvious. I don't think he actually taught us anything.... he gave no clear expectations to the students or the TA's. He ended up giving out good grades, but only after a semester of constant stress over nothing.
PSYS 001 was a great class, especially for an easy A. Super clear syllabus with tons of opportunities to earn points besides just exams. Exam material was about average difficulty, and homework was graded based on completion, not the grade earned on the exercises. Super fun material, but don't expect to get to go in depth on most topics.
I don't have anything good to say about this class.
I found he was very engaged and interested in your learning; I had a difficult schedule and he did help me try to make it work. Lectures weren't anything different than the readings, but did give you a lot of points. If you do the homework, CC's, and quizzes, you'll do extremely well in the class.
I had Larry for an intro to psychology class that I ended up not needing because I switched majors. This was one of the classes I had that I actually enjoyed going to, although I found it to be a little too easy. He uses acrobatiq and blackboard for basically everything, which I find helpful for studying. Funny and charismatic professor
Rudiger uses Acrobatiq as a learning platform which is basically an online textbook that has quizzes at the end of each 'module'. Its an awful platform and basically forces you to teach the material to yourself. He is constantly changing the due dates of the assignments without updating black board. This class is extremely unorganized and useless.
Larry has useless lectures and makes you teach yourself just about everything. You'll always have like 2 projects going and homework to do, but since he likes to have little class time, you have a lot of out-of-class time to work on everything. Still, his many timelines to schedule for are confusing and hard to work with.
The first few weeks you won't be given any assignments, but by the third or fourth week he slams you with a ridiculous amount of homework. He does not clarify ANYTHING so it is very hard to know if you have even completed the assignments on time or at all. He comes off really nice and engaged, but he is not and does not care about his students.
Rudiger seems like a very nice man but is a terrible professor. His lectures are pointless and the amount of material you are expected to learn is not worth it for a three credit class. He doesn't provide much guidance for his students and because of this many are lost when it comes time to make the research paper for the class.
He tends to go off on topics that dont relate. Grading is based off points, lots of ways to get points. Acrobatiq is the online textbook, its long. Go to class, blue slides are new material, gray are on Acrobatiq. Lots of extra hw with weekly due dates.
One thing I liked about this course was all the chances to get extra points. Dr. Rudiger was very funny. The online homework platform, acrobatiq, was kinda annoying as it kept glitching. Also we basically teach ourselves all the material and Ruiger would just go over certain parts in class.
Great professor. Very funny. We covered a lot of material in this class so be prepared to work.
I literally went and fell asleep in this class every day. Material is presented in a boring and hard to understand way, and a lot of his sentences are not relevant or connected to anything in general. Very aggravating.
This was the most pointless class I have ever taken. He rarely teaches class and for the first few weeks that I actually went he encouraged us not to even show up and told us we get 50/50 participation points for having a pulse. His lectures are beyond pointless, he clearly doesn't care about the course or teaching any material.
Larry is honestly the best professor I've ever had.
If you want/have to take this course, take it online. You don't learn anything in the lectures, you only get the attendance point (it's not mandatory to go). Acrobatiq platform is very slow and glitches a lot. There is way too much to memorize for the exams (4 units usually) and the units take forever to go through if you want to do well.
For the online class, I often found the quiz questions to be hyper specific or not even in the text (I would go back afterwards to try and find it with no results) The class is self paced which was good, and broken into doable chunks. The reading assignments were also good practice but again the questions highly specific.
He spends most of the class time talking about flash cards, his cats or his neighbors. He barely mentions the readings, which take about 6 hours, give or take, each weekend. It's like an online class that you also have to do time for, but the actual classes are a complete waste.
The worst teacher I have ever had. He honestly doesn't seem to know what he's talking about or care about teaching. The class requires lots of out of class reading and he goes over basically none of it. Instead he talks about random studies that literally nobody cares about
Larry is hilarious, a ton of fun, super interesting as a person, and absolutely the most horrifically disorganized professor I could have possible dreamt up. His projects are creative, but not well planned, you will never know when anything is due, you will never get clear instructions, and literally never know what is going on.
This guy is so bad in lecture. He doesn't teach material, just rambles on about his personal life. Not a good teacher at all
Spends Lectures recapping what you have already learned. You basically teach yourself.
I have never disliked a teacher or class more than Larry's. He doesn't teach in lecture and he spends the entire 65 minutes just talking about random graphs that don't actually have anything to do with what we're doing. The tests are hard and the questions are more like trivia questions than anything else. Your attendance is part of your grade.
Larry is very funny and engaging; I never miss a day when he's teaching. He's deeply caring about his students and knows the literature so well that he can rattle off interesting studies for any part of psychology that catches your interest. Tests require thought more than memorization. Workload is not overwhelming but not light either. TAKE LARRY!
To be fair, he REALLY means well. He definitely cares about his students. That being said, this class was a joke. If iClickers werent used for attendance, I wouldnt go. I learn nothing there that I dont learn from Acrobatiq (the online interactive textbook you have to complete for a few hours each week). Not hard material, its just a force.
Dr. Rudiger is one of the best teachers I've ever had. Incredibly funny, kind, and devoted to his students. He and Dr. Fenstermacher make the 001 class really interesting and engaging, and they give you space to try lots of different learning approaches and learn as much about yourself as psychology. Larry's a GEM. I can't wait to take him again!!
Rude to students, strays from course content in lectures, confusing, not worth taking a course with him
Take this class online if you can. Lectures are pointless, very boring, and barely cover anything in the long homework assignments you do online. You basically teach yourself the material and if attendance wasn't part of your grade I most definitely wouldn't show up. Most of the lectures were spent talking about studying tips and random research.
Lectures are very long and he is not engaging at all. The content presented in class is not useful, you are better off learning on your own from the online textbook. Tests are difficult but you have the opportunity to retake all of them for the final. Don't take this course unless you have to.
Prof. Rudiger is a funny guy/lecturer, but not a good professor in the slightest. His criteria and deadlines are disorganized, chaotic, and hard to understand. It's hard to know what is going on. I would recommend taking the course online if you can.
I do not recommend taking his classes. He doesn't discuss material well and frankly, you won't learn anything from this teacher.
Dr. Rudiger is funny but his lectures are barely relevant to what you're learning on the Acrobatiq platform. This class piles literally hours and hours of online homework and the exams are extremely difficult. The material in the homework is not difficult itself, it's just such a large amount.
Larry is one of the nicest people I have met. However, his teaching ability is subpar. His class was one of the easiest classes I have taken, but I learned nothing. I got the A because of his inability to correctly set up deadlines on Blackboard (he remedied this by curving all grades from 50% to 100%). Classes weren't relevant just use a textbook
He is very hard to follow during lecture. His lectures seem to lack structure as well as meaning. I only went to class for attendance points. You can do fine on tests by just studying the textbook pretty thoroughly; however, don't rely on lectures because he will barely cover any of the material that shows up on exams.
I thought that this professor was really nice as a person but not a very good teacher. He made us use this online learning platform called Acrobatiq and it was just an incredible amount of work every week. The tests were pretty difficult as well. Unfortunately it is a required class for psych majors, but maybe do it online if you have that option.
He is a disrespectful teacher that does not follow his own syllabus. He literally told me I was looking at the wrong one so I had to send him screenshots of his OWN syllabus. Psych 001 is a joke of a class it is very easy. Rudiger just sucks
Rudiger seems like a decent person but really just does not seem to be an effective professor. He uses an online platform called Acrobatiq which is a ridiculous amount of reading and his lectures are extremely irrelevant, vague, and nearly impossible to follow. Doesn't teach anything. It is unfortunate that he is the only professor for Psys 001.
Overall Larry is such a good guy and he is also a great teacher. I would definitely take the class again if he was my teacher.
Makes lectures really fun
I can tell Larry is a great guy, loves his job and is passionate about his students and psych. However, he isn't the best teacher, his lectures are kind of random and can be hard to follow. Basically makes you teach yourself off of an online platform that is sooo much reading. If you put some time into the class you'll probably do fine though.
Dr. Rudiger is a really exceptional individual; however, perhaps not the greatest in a lecture-learning setting. His class is an easy A, given that you read each unit thoroughly in the Acrobatiq platform. Do not expect to receive much useful information from lectures-- they are comprised mostly of tangential monologues.
You wont learn too much from lecture, but you should still show up for the clicker points. Really, just do the acrobatiq (online platform & textbook) and look for the blue slides in class (info not in acrobatiq, but has a high likelihood of showing up on exams). Its an easy A!
Much of the criticism here is misguided. His expectations are abundantly clear: do Acrobatiq, make flashcards, come to class. Sure, class wasn't particularly useful for exam performance, and my engagement was rare, but you have to come for iClicker points. He tells you the best ways to approach the material. Follow his advice and you'll get an A.
His lectures can go on tangents that don't really provide much of the material. However if you do the Acrobatiq platform and make flashcards like they suggest, succeeding in the class isn't hard. They are funny but just not the most beneficial to actually learning the material.
He makes an easy subject extremely difficult. The quizzes sometimes don't even match the text you are supposed to read. This professor makes psych seem impossible to pass. If you want to contact him for help, forget it. You'll never get an email back. This class is mandatory, but I wish I could take it from someone else.
While I didn't really enjoy this class, it wasn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. You can tell how much the professors do care and even if the class may be messy at times I did appreciate their effort to connect with the class. I found the textbook to be the most helpful for studying for classes and never got much out of the lectures
I love Larry. He gives amazing, engaging lectures, is very clear about his expectations, and gives you TONS of resources to help you learn how to build an effective study strategy. He truly cares, is funny and knowledgable, and takes no BS. He is truly a gem and I am psyched that I got to have him this semester. Pun intended.
Professor Rudiger is super funny and loves to talk about his beloved cats and his life. His lectures can be hard to follow if you do not read the unit before class, but it is overall fairly simple. He loves using the clickers in class, so being present is very crucial to get a good grade. If you study and pay attention, tests are fairly simple.
The lectures had little to do with the readings, as well as the AV presentations. I would read the chapter, take notes, and the quiz would not even have material from the book. The quizzes are extremely hard, and you have to get an 9/10 to be able to go onto the next quiz. I didn't get a good grade, as I couldn't pass a certain test and those after
Professor Rudiger is amazing! The class itself was "eh", but he always made it a good time. He cares about his students and always leaves time for question sessions at the end of class. Class is not mandatory, but it helps to go. Grading criteria made it LITERALLY impossible to fail the class which is wonderful! Minimal effort! Easy A! Recommend!
Prof. Rudiger was really passionate about psych and I'm sure this class would've been great in person. The online format of this class was very disorganized at the start. I was excited to learn psychology but for me (and other students I spoke to), the online format was difficult to follow.
Larry is a great professor. He's funny, he loves to talk about his life (and his cats), and he's very passionate about psychology. The class itself isn't too difficult, as long as you do your Acrobatiq and keep up with Blackboard tests. Your final grade in the class is determined by how many tests you complete, so it's important to stay caught up!
Dr. Rudiger is entertaining, engaging, makes you feel comfortable, challenging but not too difficult, and explains things very well. He always gives excellent answers to questions and I learned so much over the semester with him. I hope I get to take another class with him before I graduate.
I feel like this class would've been so much better in person, but online I found it to be very boring and there was a lot of quizzes. The material was not engaging and the professor didn't try to make it engaging as much as I hoped he would.
honestly, teaching style sucks. seems like a good person, but wouldnt recommend as a teacher
I saw bad reviews for Larry for the 001 level classes, but taking 240 with him Spring 2021 was great! He's super easy going and accessible, and the class was very much project based. If you do the work and your group members are decent, it's an easy A+
Easy class. You can get as involved in the class as you want. Talk to the professor after class for questions and just have great conversations. Easy A
I took the online section of this class and it was one of the easiest classes I've ever taken. It was super easy to go at your own pace, and if I ever had any questions, I could reach out. Easy A if you do the work you're supposed to.
PSYS 001 was the worst class I could imagine to have my first semester of college. His lectures were not very focused and mostly irrelevant to hw and exam material.
I would definitely not recommend taking intro to psych if it's not required. The amount of reading you're expected to do for a 001 level class is completely unreasonable. You need to get a 90% on each test to pass and his questions are typically ambiguous and poorly written. This class was truly a displeasure and waste of my time and tuition.
They'll spend the first 5 or so classes trying to convince you the structure is well-researched and designed. The only thing it does effectively is make you question if you should switch your psys major. Tbh not worth going to class or doing the readings. Larry seems cool but the structure of this class sucks.
This guy called me out in a room of 300 people because I was on my phone. He was talking about how he failed chem in college because he was too busy hanging out with "his hunky bf". Some might find this funny. I never went to class again. I not paying to hear about a 60 year old man's college dating life. I never went to class again. I got an A.
Larry is not only a great instructor, but he also cares about his students. LR has been an invaluable resource as an undergrad. Don't pay attention to all the negative 001 students on this page, they're all likely not psys majors, don't like readings, and/or don't have a sense of humor.
Larry is fine, his lectures are somewhat boring, but I can tell he tries his best to make them interesting. Notetaking on laptops is not allowed with him unfortunately, but you really don't need to attend class as long as you do the readings anyways.
Larry is not only rude when communicating via email, he also shows very little interest in the course because he's probably taught it a million times and is bored with the material. The lectures are like a script and are so boring to sit through. It's not even worth coming to class. You are graded by 33 tests and 1 paper. I HATED this class.
This class can be an easy A if you know how to motivate yourself. I am a big procrastinator, which made this class hard for me. If you are also a procrastinator I do not recommend the online course because I could not attend lectures, which would have held me accountable. The class is all self-paced which made it hard for me.
Larry's lectures are interesting but have little to do with the material. He spends most of the time talking about his personal life. The class is an easy A if you do well with self pacing, everything is due at the end of semester so its okay if you procrastinate. You don't need to go to the lectures if you read the textbook chapters.
Professor Rudiger is a great person, but not a good professor. He rambles about his personal life more than teaching and is very anti-technology for note-taking during class. It was an easy class but the lectures were so boring and pointless that by the end of the semester, only about 30 people were going to the 300-person lecture.
He talks a lot about his personal life and hates technology. If you want to use a laptop to take notes you have to sit on the outside of the rows or the back. And don't even think about having your phone out because he will call you up after class and tell you not to have it out, very high school. Class is super easy though and you don't have to go
This class is great when taking just for credit. This class was at your own speed, with 33 quizzes you could take at your own time. There was a final PEA project, which they gave feedback on your draft for. Attendance is not mandatory. You should easily succeed in this class if you do the work.
Class was in person, but everything is online so there's no point in going. Larry hates technology, so if you want to use a laptop you have to sit at the very side or the back. It's graded on 33 tests, 10 questions each that are googleable and 1 project/writing. Take the class if you want easy credit.
Larry is the best! I've taken 3 classes with him and he is smart and caring. Highly recommend.
literally such an odd man but so lovely. i took psych 1400 and it was literally 33 quizzes you take at your own pace and they were all so easy. other than that no tests and you dont have to show up for class. literally that is all the class is. def reccomend if you need a gpa booster. larry is quite a fella.
Professor Rudiger's class is an easy A if you stay on top of the 33 online quizzes. While his lectures can be tangential, the textbook covers the core material well. unstuck study AI was a lifesaver for quiz prep - highly recommend using it alongside the free course materials.
Larry's class is very easy if you just want an easy A, but a bit harder if you actually want to retain any psychology knowledge. The entire grade is based off of 33 online quizzes that are each 10 questions and can be taken as many times as needed. He's a great guy, but the class's structure may need to be reworked a bit.
Larry is a really nice guy, but the most unorganized professor I have ever had. That said, this class is by far the easiest 3000-level psych course to take at UVM. You will have no trouble getting an A+ as long as you submit something for assignments and do the projects. This is a hybrid course so you only have about 2/3rds of classes in person.
prof. rudiger is a fun dude to hear a lecture from. which is why it's a shame they decided to base the entire class on an online platform that is mind-numbingly boring. the idea of having no deadlines is generous in theory, but in practice has been not nearly structured enough. i have procrastinated myself into oblivion, and i'm sure i'm not alone.
The course is almost completely online with an online textbook. If I attended class, I was disengaged from lecture. It repeated everything I had learned in the online textbook and the professor kept going on tangents from actual psychology material. The benefit to this course is it being self-paced with no due dates until the end of the semester.
The class is almost completely online with an online textbook in addition to lecture material and tests. I didn't go to lectures because the professor kept going on tangents from the actual psych material and the lectures were disengaging. A positive about this course is that it's self-paced with no due dates until the last day of the semester.
This class was honestly a waste of time as it was basically an online class and no one showed up to class after the first week. Professor spends all of class talking about everything besides psych and cared more about sharing his own opinions and life that nobody needed to hear. The self pace aspect of this course was the only good thing about it.
Larry is a very nice professor and interesting to listen to! I do think he could move this class fully online though. Attendance isn't mandatory and all of the course materials (textbook + quizzes) are online. As long as you pass all of the 33 quizzes (there are some funky grading criteria) you get an A. Overall weirdly structured but I liked it!
Larry is a really nice, funny guy. He really wants his students to succeed and if you build rapport with him he's a great resource! People that complain about his style of teaching drive me crazy, you get out of the class what you put in, and he's not trying to crush your dreams or GPA. Just lean into it a bit and have a good time! Also loves SITC!
Larry is a fantastic professor! His passion for psychology is contagious, and his lectures are always engaging and clear.
Larry is a fantastic professor! His passion for psychology is contagious, and his lectures are always engaging and clear
Larry has a gift for making even the most challenging topics in psychology feel interesting and manageable. The class discussions were always insightful and helped deepen my understanding of the material. Highly recommend this course to anyone interested in psychology
This class was mostly online and very few people went to lectures. I went to lectures regularly and I liked Larry. People will complain because he does tend to ramble but I found his personal stories interesting and they always had to do with the modules we were doing. Really nice guy
Coursework is quizzes unlimited retakes with specific rules, if you retake a quiz before two hours elapses, it can be a violation of academic integrity (automatic fail) unless you can demonstrate it was a mistake. Incredibly easy course, he and Dr. Fenstermacher explain the specific structure and pedagogical reasoning and research early on.
I'm sure the professors are nice enough, but I struggled so much to keep up with the assignments that i withdrew. the format of the quizzes is impossible. do yourself a favor and take psych with nicole bresland
Whoever's rating Larry less than a 5 can go ---- yourself. Super chill teacher and if you really want to learn you can do that.
LOVE LARRY WHAT A KING! Literally the most helpful in the psych department I am a senior and he is the ONLY PROF to help me with letter of recs. He helped get me into my counseling grad program and an internship within my undergrad. He is the most genuine and understanding professors his courses were so easy and made me actually want to learn!
Had him for organizational psych and psych of law both were group based classes and very easy no tests or exams and weekly assignments which he is lenient with and one workshop and job fair at the end which are very simple and way more useful than exams LOVE his courses. He is a very helpful professor and so funny I def recommend if you want an A+
Larry is awesome. Seems to genuinely care about teaching and the success of his students. Org psych has a lot of reading but if you put in the work, you will get a good grade. No tests. Highly recommend this professor for his upper-level courses.
Larry is the most disorganized professor I have ever had at UVM. I went into the class hopeful for an exciting class that would tailor to my interest in Org Psych, and I left the class extremely disappointed because everything was so disorganized. I only ever felt challenged by trying to organize all of the disorganized content. #1 worst class.
I love him so much he is such a sweetheart! Professor Rudiger wants you to do well and will help you, you just have to reach out to him. He's super nice and if you want to learn you will, that being said if you don't want to learn you won't. It's really up to you but he gives you ample opportunities to do well.
This class is basically an online class, which was not what I was expecting. Larry is a great professor and funny and nice, but the actual course was based on 33 Brightspace tests that you had to complete, and the learning was entirely from the online textbook, so you had to teach yourself everything. The lectures were all from the textbook.
