Has a good sense of humor and seems to really like teaching math. He keeps it interesting in class. I recommend him to anyone taking college algebra. I can't believe someone gave him a rating of 1.

I thought he was going to be a very hard teacher but, he is much nicer than he seems. He was the best math teacher I have ever had. He made everything understable to us and always answered questions. Take him if you get the chance, he is very good.

Larry Southard is a great teacher. Really knows his stuff. Very helpful. He likes to joke around, if you cant take a joke you prob wont like him. I highly recommend him.

Mr Southard is the man, I had him for college algebra and elementary calculus. He was very clear and explained the material really well. He is very nice and ready to help in whatveer he can. He does joke a lot and sometimes people dont like him bc of that, hes a super nice man.

I knew calculus was going to be hard but, Mr. Southar makes it seem easy. I never had a math teacher as good as him. I think I am going to get an A!

Larry Southard takes us step by step to solve the problems he is very helpful. He always tells bad jokes but sometimes they ar funny. I nevermiss his class and u never want be late or you have to sing the teapot song

He is Hilarious! He jokes are crude, but he makes th class very interesting. He explains stuff thoroughly and clear. He is a great Math teacher!

I just got my midterm back and found out how much he curved the grade. Mr Southern rules! about 1/4 of the class dropped even tho he lets us do the homework till we get a 100%. He pretends to be tough but he is nice. He always answers a question with a question, so he makes you learn instead of just giving answers.

This turned out ot be an easy class. He posted a practice exam for the final on line and the final was almost the exact same questions listed online. I got an A on the final and so did my friend. I did study alot though. Statstcs is a hard class.

It's hit or miss with Lary. Luckily it was hit with me. He kept me laughing and I loved his teaching style. He picks on his students a lot, so be prepared. I ended up getting 103% on the final. Do yourself a favor and learn everything you can about the calculator functions in your textbook. Don't let him scare you, he's an awesome guy!

I passed this class! This was my second time taking stats. Mr. Southard is not easy but he is fair. He is pretty funny. I liked the pirate slides.

Mr. Southard is a great Professor. It's not an easy class but it's not hard either. Attendance isn't mandatory but he has "pop quizzes" when people don't show up which is an automatic 100%. He's a jerk at first but after add drop, he makes it really easy. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND taking him. The best stats teacher you can get!

Mr. Southard's personality before and after the drop/add period are dramatically different. When I first took his class I did not like him but after the first 6 weeks when he realized who the serious students were he became my favorite teacher. He is wonderful at explaining things and I would recommend him to anybody and I plan on taking him again!

Stats is a pretty hard class, but he made it enjoyable! He's really funny, which helps when teaching stats. He's realistic about the class, but the tests aren't too bad if you take the time to learn the material. He tends to over-prepare you for the test so you do well. I had a lot of fun in his class!

The class is fairly easy if you attend. He usually lets us out after 20 minutes, which is awesome. No homework and the online quizzes are almost identical to the in-class portion of the tests. He is very nice and helpful, just dont make him mad!

He is a great professor for calc. I had it with Amy Benvie and dropped it because she didn't teach it well enough. He doesn't use the clicker, and attendance is not mandatory, but if you want to learn the material you should go. Tests are hard but he puts a big curve on them. If you do the work you will pass the class. Best Teacher for Elem Calc.

Larry was the funniest teacher I've ever had. If you think he is mean, than you are a baby. He doesn't put up with any BS. Know how to use your TI-83/84/89-Very helpful. If you show up you will pass!!

Very sarcastic but funny. He makes the dreadful topic of Stats easy. Know how to use your calculator. Although most think he is out to fail everyone, that is not the case at all. He provides everything you need to succeed; show up, do your work, study and you will pass.

Pretty easy teacher. Very funny. Some are afraid of him but if you visit him in his office he gives unlimited help. He does want us to learn Stats. Highly recommend him, as he is very fair. I hate when we have peple show up late, he doesn't make them sing. I had him at edison he is very smart.

Do the hw and the reviews right before the tests and take notes. He helps whoever needs it. Would suggest him to anybody who is afraid to take Statistics like I was!

I took stats with Southard and it was great! Anyone that complains that he's mean doesn't have a backbone becuase he really isn't. If you learn how to use your calculator (and he helps with that a TON), work on the homework, and at least pay attention when he says to then you'll be fine. I highly recommend him!!

Well I took him for statistics and besides me having some difficulties further along in class was only due to me slacking off but as a teacher he was above all good! Very helpful and some people think his sarcasm is a joke but it was relatively funny and eases tension in the classroom. Would recommend him and dont slack off and get a C like I did.

Best stats teacher hands down, use the calculator for everything and a formula sheet on the test. He is a little crazy but he knows how to teach

This teacher is hilarious. If you know how to use the calculator then your good to go. The best stats teacher on campus. Makes class funny and enjoyable. And we get out early every class. In order to have fun in this class you ABSOLUTELY must have a good sense of humor. Hint: Don't come late and don't let your cell phone go off.

Had him for stats. Hes not a bad teacher at all you have to do alot of work on your own though. Makes class interesting with his stories. Statistics is not a fun class, period. But I thought Prof. Southard was funny, though his humor was dry and sarcastic. He's not exactly a nice guy, but he's not mean to you if you aren't doing anything stupid. As far as his teaching style, he will explain things more than once if you really need it, and he doesn't move too fast. I recommend him.

Excellent professor! He's very smart and knows what he's teaching. You have to try your best in this class. He will help you along the way if your on his good side. Dont be late to class or youll have to sing in front of the class. He has a great sense of humor. That's the only way I survived in that class. Pass all homework!

He is a funny teacher which is good. He has a low tolerance for stupid people, which is about 25% of my class. I went to his office and he helped a lot. Some don't like him because he makes students work and doesnt accept excuses. He is a very good teacher. I wish I had him the first time I took Stats

He knows and loves what he is teaching. If you are having problems DO NOT be afraid to ask. Otherwise you won't learn a thing. Also take advantage of his office hours, he will help you and you will with out a doubt pass. I didn't take advantage of them as I should.

I loved Southard as a professor and would take him again if I could. He has a VERY dry sense of humor and it takes a bit to grow accustomed to it. He doesn't tolerate stupidity or laziness. Grading is more than fair. If you ask questions, he'll be more than happy to answer, explain, talk or whatever you need so you understand.

Statistics is a really hard class but Professor Southard is really funny so it makes the time go back fast. The homework is different from what he teaches in class though. And his tests are different from the homework. This is a do-able class if you put forth effort and the Professor is nice and funny, really cares about his students.

He's funny but the homework does not reflect what you learn in class. You'll have to reference the book every second to complete the homework. He teaches the program SPSS a lot for his take home exams with little mechanical teaching of the math behind it which is what you'll need for the homework.

Very sarcastic teacher but its funny when you get used to him. He isnt a bad teacher at all, but he isnt the greatest. The homework is easy but the tests are difficult. Expect to actually do work and youll do fine.

this statistics class was honestly the hardest class i have taken at fgcu. Homework is completly different from what is in class and what is on the test. Homework and quizzes are very hard due to the fact you havnt learned anything yet. is sarcastic and rude and did not enjoy his class. DO NOT reccomend for a stats clss.

If your good at simple math already, take him. He moves fast so your not sitting there bored the whole time. He is very sarcastic but not in a rude way it's just his sense of humor. Show up, do your work, and you'll have an 'A'.

Prof. Southard took what can be a dreadfully boring class and made it bearable and even funny. Stats is really REALLY easy, it's just very boring. Highly recommend Southard's class. Also, you MUST have the book and a TI-83 calculator for this class or you WILL NOT PASS. READ THE BOOK! It will get you an A.

Stats was hard for me but if you ask for help he's always available. Dry and sarcastic humor that makes the class go by quickly. Does not tolerate phone use, quickest way to piss him off. Overall, great professor and would definitely take him again if I needed another math/stat class

GREAT PROFESSOR! He tries to scare you off the first few weeks, has a very dry sense of humor. Drops lowest quiz, 4 homework grades, and lowest test. Show up to class, and do a little bit each day you will pass. PUT IN THE EFFORT! If you fail this class it's bc you didn't try. Almost bailed bc of the poor reviews of him on here. So glad I didn't!

He stated multiple times that students pay for their education, and they have the right to ask questions. One of the best professors I've had.

Decent class. Since its required to take at FGCU its not all that bad. You will either love Southard and think he's funny or hate him and his sarcasm. I had mixed feelings depending on the day. DO NOT use your phone in class or any electronics or you will get called out in front of the class. Southard knows his stuff. I had to study to get an A.

This professor is hard. He helps you if you visit his office hours but you have to go in with knowledge of the class. The tests are hard. there is a huge research project that takes up most of your grade. Attendence is MANDATORY!

If you pay attention in this class there is no way you can't pass. His tests are mostly written tests but he shows you how to do every problem in class. The homework and quizzes are online and are very easy. He has very dry humor but and can be very strict but if you can get past that it's actually an easy class.

Textbook is online. He's very traditional and he'll tell you if you're dumb. He likes to tell stories in class, so he's fun. But if you fail his stats class I'm sorry... it's really not that hard. He'll tell you. "Is plastic okay?... Would you like to super-size that?"

Great teacher, but you have to show up to class if you want to pass. Homeworks are important because they prepare you well for the exams. He is intimidating at first but don't get scared. If you don't know something go to his office hours , it will help you big time.

He is very open and honest, does not put up with anything. If you skip class you will most likely fail, he takes attendance randomly but it counts towards your grade. He drops 2 quizzes and 2 homework grades! Also at the end of the semester there is extra credit available but he won't tell you that until the end. Go to office hours!!

Southard is hilarious and a great teacher. As long as you take notes, do the work, and show up to class you will succeed. It's not hard if you do the work. As he will tell you one hundred times and in the most condescending ways possible. I was always excited for his class and I had it at 8 AM if that tells you anything. Never a dull moment.

This subject is one of the toughest subjects out there, but with taking this class with this professor not only will he go through the material, but he'll also make the class entertaining. He knows what he's talking about and he knows how boring this class could be, so he uses a lot of sarcasm and humor to help you stay involved.

Prof. Southard is an all around good professor. If you put in the time(this is key) to complete the readings, the work and the ever-dreaded "final project", you'll do fine in his classes. You have to show up, but he lectures most of the time and there is rarely any dead air. Will help you understand his expectations for you and is a fair grader.

If you're good at math and are looking for a professor who treats you like an adult I highly recommend taking Prof Southard. I showed up maybe 10 times all semester and finished with a 94. Attendance is 1% of your grade and the homework will prepare you better than class. He drops your lowest test, and 2 lowest quizzes and homeworks.

He's a great teacher, if you need help, he is there to help you. It's a good idea to make it to class because it is very helpful. He makes jokes and doesn't hold anything back so if you get easily offended, that might be a problem. He makes the class fun and engages with his students.

You MUST do the homework if you want a B or better but all homework and smartbook is online (you must buy the access code) and you are given multiple attempts for homework. Drops the lowest test grade. Tests are NOT multiple choice but if you know what you're doing it's ok.

Took him for STA 2023 and dropped him. Took him for this class and he is different this time around, hes funny but very sarcastic. May come off as rude but its just his sarcasm. You can tell he loves statistics. This was a 6 week course, 6 tests, wasnt as hard as I thought, 3 take home tests that you work on with a partner. Attendance matters !!

Professor Southard is on a mission to weed out whoever isn't serious about passing the course. Pay attention, come to class, have a graphing calculator and you will pass. He's very sweet and very sarcastic. Overall, he is a wonderful professor.

Be respectful, dont use your phone, and pay attention to what he teaches. some times it feels like it's all over the place but it ends up making sense. the homework and quizzes are very easy and even the tests are manageable. sometimes the tests are easier than the hw

He is hilarious but if you're easily offended don't take him because he says what he wants even if you don't agree with him. Stats is a hard class, but he taught it very well. Teaches you how to do everything on your calculator. He doesn't tolerate stupid people so if you are looking for an easy class and a lenient teacher I'd look elsewhere.

Professor Southard is a very sarcastic guy and will say what he wants, and comes off a bit arrogant at first; but other than that he's a very good professor that knows what he's doing and makes sure everyone knows the material. Before tests he does in class reviews that are very helpful, and he has great lectures. I would highly recommend him!!

The teacher is amazing. He is funny when you are not the one that comes in late. He makes a big deal about the little things but its the little things that really count. He genuinely cares about the students that are trying to pass. If you are lazy then dont take this class. He doesnt like lazy students. He doesnt ask much of his students.

Great intermediate algebra professor! Although he doesn't grade attendance, I would highly recommend going to class because he likes to give surprise quizzes when students don't show up. Lectures were easy to understand and tests were easy.

Great guy. If you don't put any effort in you will hate him. If you do what you're supposed to and participate he is a great professor. Make sure to participate and ask questions. He goes over the content quickly but if you tell him when you are confused or don't understand he will explain it better. If you don't care he wont care.

If you have the pleasure of having Southard as your statistics professor I can guarantee a few things. Your first day of class, you will absolutely hate him. Honestly, wish I could take him again. If you are looking to put in zero work, do him and yourself a favor and pick a different professor. He explains stats in the simplest way possible and tells you exactly what will be on the test. His class is an easy A if you genuinely respect the class. Hes always trying for a laugh. If you do the homework assignments and online quizzes, you can literally fail the exams and still pass the class. He doesn't make it hard, it literally depends on how much work YOU put into it.

As long as you attend class and participate, you will be fine. He enjoys students that participate, and will call out students who don't pay attention/stay on their phone.

Very standard math course; lots of material to cover, lots of HW for each section to practice the material. Every section had concise lectures on the material & applications, and extra videos on how to use technology so you don't do everything by hand. Southard can seem blunt/harsh, but was witty, polite & understanding of tech issues I encountered
