This is an amazing course that anyone should take! It's open to non-architecture majors so anyone just interested can take it. It's a sort of survey of architecture, but primarily recent ones. It's very interesting and I loved everyday of the lectures!
the best class ive taken by far. his lectures are amazing, everday is worth going. you dont even spend the whole period scribbling bc he puts the lectures online (audio). hes a fantastic teacher and everyone should have the opportunity to take one of his classes.

Speck is apsolutely one of the best professors i have ever had. He knows the material on a personal level, He is extremely well respected for his architectural work in Austin, and he is genuinly interested in the thoughts of students.
hes an awesome teacher, but when he starts goin through the slides it's sometimes hard to stay awake
larry speck is an awsome professor and he makes the class very interesting. he went to almost every place that he shows in the class, so he knows them extremly well. every lecture is worth of going and i never get bored in the class. in fact i always feel the lecture was too short!
His class is definitely worth taking. I'm not into architecture, but he made us see how it affects everyday life.
Clear, entertaining, and interesting. Speck really translates his love of architecture into his lectures. If you have good visual memory, this class is a breeze.
Prof Speck is absolutely amazing. I took his class for my FA requirements, and decided to change my career plans because of it. He loves what he does and helps you to enjoy it as well. Definately take this class!
I didn't find his lectures moving, but maybe architecture isn't my calling. I didn't like that there were usually over 100 pictures of buildings per test, and you had to memorize every view of every building along with its architect. The books for this class were also highly uninteresting. To each their own I suppose.
Architecture and Society is a turning point for all architecture students. This is an amazing lecture course that provides the groundwork for students' architectural thinking for their next five years at the UT SoA.
This is the best lecture I ever had and professor speck is an amazing teacher. his class not only interesting but extremely helpful if you are interested in architecture.
This professor is AMAZING. It is a very structured course, the multiple choice on the test can be hard. There are 2 mult, choice essay's but you receive them in advance to prepare. Love this teacher, LOVE LOVE, take him!!! GO TO CLASS AND READ THE BOOKS and you WILL pass. His love for architecture is crystal clear:) favorite professor :)
Dr. Speck is an excellent professor. He is an incredibly interesting lecturer. Quizes are partially based on texts but most quiz content comes from the lectures so attendence is critical to do well in the course. You will know what is expected of you on day one. He is very willing to answer questions, and selects TAs who will do the same.

Larry Speck is the man. As the former dean of the UT SoA, he clearly knows what he's talking about. The tests could be difficult, but he tells you exactly what you need to know to do well. His knowledge of architecture seems endless. The lectures are recorded and posted online so attendance isn't even really mandatory. Take this class.
BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD! if you ever get the chance to take one of his classes...DO IT! he is very approachable and his lectures are very interesting.
Professor Speck is one of the most passionate Professors i have ever had, the fact that he is also a successful architect only adds to the class and his credibility.
Creative Problem Solving- He is a great teacher. The class is about how ordinary people became creative and made a difference in the world, and impacts you to be a creative problem solver. There are 2 quizes, a project and a mandatory final. His class is very interesting and enriching. I highly recommend.I made an A!
best professor I have ever had! I loved his lectures! take his class!
Larry is funny, makes the class interesting and enjoyable. Extremely knowledgeable, he makes class fun and interesting. One of my favorite classes I have taken at UT.
I took this class because I had read great reviews about Larry Speck. Something I wish I would have read, though, was how difficult the class would actually be. You take 4 "quizzes" throughout the semester, but don't let the word 'quiz' fool you, they are more difficult than most TESTS. Other than that, Larry is a good professor.
Speck is awesome. You dont actually have to attend lectures because they are all posted online but the class is so interesting that you should go anyway. He makes you just wanna go out and really see the world how he has. Amazing class. Definitely take it!
The grade you recieve in this class is completly dependent upon the TA you get. I worked my ass off all semester and only made a B. The tests are incredibly easy and the project isn't too bad but I must say the grading is not fair at all. If you want to take a class that is very inteesting but don't really care what grade you get, then go for it.
I would recommend this class. It is my major so I am biased here. Overall, the class is well structured and excellently taught. There are no surprises. If you can schedule everything out, once you get the syllabus, it will be one of your easier classes (it was for me).
This class has great potential and can be very influential in your life, that is, if you want it to be. Anyhow, grades: don't expect to get a good grade, even if you do everything right and work your tail off. The grading is highly preferential, and really falls upon the selection of TAs. The grading is probably the failing point of the class.
Larry Speck is a brilliant professor. He makes you enjoy the class and the topic. He is funny and entertaining. His class is easy as long as you're prepared to do the work. Tests are really not difficult if you do the reviews.
Brilliant mind this professor has! He penetrated something that brought me to finally discover this incredible passion to & from ARC b/c of his class! Everything's pretty clear from day 1; fairly easy tests too. Just really listen (or listen to his recordings at least) and cross your fingers on a good TA b/c you're gonna do EVERYTHING w/ him/her.
Favorite class so far. I never found that I had questions over his lectures but the TA sessions are mandatory and my TA was also amazing. He is a really cool guy and gives a perspective on architecture I had never seen before. I took this because it was a VAPA but I almost wish I was an architecture student because of him.
This guy is AMAZING. Creative Problem Solving should be a must for every student at UT. The class seriously changes your life and yes best class I've had at UT. I mean come on he went to MIT, He owns a very successful architecture business, and he's funny! guaranteed you will be smarter after a semester with him.
Entertaining and funny guy, I was never bored in lecture. If you have any type of problem in your life that you would like to work on, I recommend taking this class. Exams are entirely free response and are worth a small percentage of your grade, while the writing assignments are worth much more. However, grading is entirely dependent on your TA!!
I took Creative Problem Solving and was incredibly disappointed. The course is way too idealistic. One of the main points is that there is no universal definition for creativity. However, your final paper, worth a majority of your grade, is graded based upon how "creative" your ideas were. Very disappointed, the TA and lectures never went together.
Larry is definitely passionate about architecture, but the class is way harder than it should be. The workload is rather high for a VAPA class and TAs take months to grade assignments. Lectures and test material don't correlate very well. Don't take this class expecting an easy A.
Professor Speck taught my Introduction to Architecture and Society. Although he is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about architecture, it is often unclear what is being tested and what he expects you to know. In order to make an A, you have to memorize responses to 4 different essay options, as well as study all lecture and reading notes.
Speck's class is so interesting! It is on the tougher side of VAPAs but is very eye opening and well worth it! Tests, attendance, and short essays make up your grade. He can sometimes be unclear about what will be tested, but most people usually end up doing fine. The class was created to have a B average, so if you want higher you'll have to work
Larry is VERY passionate about arc and he's HILARIOUS, so there's hardly a dull moment in class. One of the harder VAPAs. YOUR GRADE IS ENTIRELY DEPENDENT ON YOUR TA. You must work for an A, but it's honestly not that much. LOTS of essays. He tells you exactly what he's going to test you on a week before the test. Hated/loved this class.
Larry Speck is an extremely accomplished architect in Austin and his lectures are incredible - his passion for architecture and intelligence are so apparent in all of his lectures. He really makes you think differently about architecture and view it in a thoughtful manner. 10/10 recommend this class.
Amazing lecturer. I was always interested in what he had to say, even if I didn't like architecture. He's always willing to help you out if you need it. Tests are easy if you pay attention to the book and study the powerpoints really hard. He chooses the most obscure pictures for them.
He's a good professor, but I find him so annoying. I'm writing this review in class right now and I am bored out of my mind. He's just too idealistic and I get the impression that he doesn't know anything. He's probably pretty good when it comes to architecture, but I probably won't take another one of his classes.
I took this as my VAPA credit, yet it has been my favorite classes ever. It changed my life. I loved his lectures, and even the TA sessions. He's brilliant and passionate about architecture, and makes you become aware about architecture and look at buildings critically. Lots of assignments and obscure picture ID's, but totally worth it!
Speck is a huge deal on campus, but you would never know that just from his lectures. Super chill guy with a lot of experience, so he knows what he is talking about. This class helped me gain a worldview on arch. that I never would have thought I'd have. His TAs are awesome too! (S/O to Heidi). Not an easy A, but a fascinating VAPA.
Speck is great but basically his TAs are in charge when it comes to grades and organization and its down right frustrating. Speck nor his TAs use canvas and they grade too harshly for it to be an Intel class. They e pest you to write more than what is asked, saying its "implied." It feels like a hard, frustrating highschool class. Come one now, ugh
Dr. Speck made ARC 308 my favorite class at UT. His lectures are informative, interesting, and overall he relates the course to your everyday life to give you an enhanced appreciation for architecture. It's not a blowoff class, but I would highly recommend taking it for VAPA credit.
Specks lectures are amazing and hes a very well known architect, i feel lucky to get to take his class
Larry speck is one of the most respected professors on campus. His arc and society class is so interesting and he presents the material in such a great way. The class is by far the best class I've taken at UT and I'd recommend it to anyone.
Awesome teacher. Easy class if you put in the work and study.
I'm an architecture major so of course, I liked this class, but Larry Speck is still a great person and professor.
Very nice and inspiring professor. Understanding and flexible. You'll do some reading but it is interesting material. Lectures are captivating and he is big on discussions in class. Definitely a great class and highly recommend.
Speck is very knowledgeable and passionate about architecture. The class is quite a bit of work but manageable. Overall a fun class that I would recommend for sure
Love him:)))))
I regret taking this class. Lectures are EXTREMELY boring. Staying awake is a struggle. Most people take the class just to get their VAPA credit, but he makes you work for just a B in this class. Overall just an unwanted headache of a class and would not dare take again.
Dr. Speck is a remarkable lecturer, and his explanations of each region/architectural idea make studying easy. You definitely need to read the books but they're short and easy. Tests are easy to prepare for. I would definitely recommend this VAPA over others that sound more difficult and less interesting!
Speck is the first artistic genius I've ever met. The man has been teaching this class for decades and is a world-renowned architect. His lectures feel more like relaxing therapy than class, and he really makes you love and appreciate architecture. If you buy into the class it is a piece of cake. And no, you don't need to know how to draw!
Pretty chill guy, attendance is a big chunk of your grade
I took this class because of the reviews on here. It's an interesting class and I really have a new perspective on architecture. Larry really knows what he's talking about and he's passionate. However, this class was tough. It's a lot of analyzing and I had to work for a B.
Okay, the assignments were really hard for me because I'm not an artistic person and thinking about elements of art doesn't come naturally to me. However, it's the TAs that grade the papers so if you get a good TA you'll be fine. Read everything, study EVERYTHING, and show up to every lecture no matter what. It's definitely possible to make an A.
Speck is a legend. This class was a huge eye opener about the importance of architecture in our everyday life. The lectures were always interesting, and he is extremely articulate. The reading was helpful in understanding the material. Tests are fairly difficult. The presentation can be a real grade booster if you're well prepared. Fantastic class.
Speck is the bomb!!!!!! Such a cool guy, I knew nothing about architecture but his arch and society class gave me a completely new perspective! Def recommend
Larry is a great guy and an amazing architect. He knows what he is talking about and is also a very successful architect. He changed the way I look at the buildings and the environments around us. I would take this class every semester if I could. Larry will never bore you. He truly is an architect junky and will make you into one as well.
Professor Speck is an amazing lecturer. I cannot say enough positive things about his class. I took this as my VAPA credit knowing nothing about architecture before, and it completely changed my mindset. An easy A if you put some effort into it. Would take this class again in a heartbeat if I could.
Professor Speck was one of the best professors I've ever had! He is extremely knowledgable and passionate about architecture. He'll make you notice and think about things you've never considered before. Plus he's very witty! I would take this class every semester if I could. It's not impossible to get an A, but it definitely depends on your TA.
Speck is such a gem. Took this class for a VAPA & it was really easy to get a B+ and up. Definitely attend lectures as they are attendance based and you need to know the content for the tests. Tests are a little difficult, but as long as you go to lecture/read the book then you will be fine! He is so hilarious and you can tell his passion for arch!
Speck is an amazing professor. not an easy A, but if you put in a normal amount of effort into the assignments and tests, it's not hard to get an A. his lectures are full of information and insight and he has a lot of personal experience. take this class even if you already have your vapa credit. opens your eyes to architecture of your surroundings
WAY too hard to be a UGS class!!! Too much homework and reading. Attendance is mandatory in both lecture and discussion which are both terribly boring & painful to sit through. Short papers due each week, 2 tests (all essay questions) & a final, and a semester-long project. Smart guy but will never take him again
Hes reached over 35,000 students just to give you an idea. Hes been teaching the course for more than 10 years, almost 20. Hes a great professor and a great instructor, you will not be disappointed. Grade is easy to make, depends on TA and if you show interest. His class made me choose a new career path. Hes very inspirational, hands down best!
Dr. Speck is amazing! Loved every single one of his lectures. Grading: 3 exams + fInal 60% of grade. Attendance is 10%. You get a buildings and have to write/find out about it -- 20%. Discussion sxn is 10%. 3 books that you have to read, if not, no A. If you absolutely can't make it to class, there is lecture capture online.
Professor Speck is a wonderful lecturer and you will learn a lot about architecture. I definitely feel more open minded about the subject and took a lot out of his class. Test questions can be somewhat difficult but if you attend all (most) of the lectures and read the books, you should be good to go. Definitely would take Speck again!!
This class was amazing. Dr. Speck really changed the way I look at architecture. He is really passionate about the material and you can see it during every lecture. The class is not easy and requires you to read books and spend time studying. If you have an interest in architecture I would definitely recommend it.
Easily one of my favorite classes I've ever taken at UT. He changed the way I looked at architecture and made it accessible and interesting. Not an easy A, but very manageable if you put in some effort. He's the former dean of the architecture school and runs a respected arch firm in Austin. GREAT class!!
Creative Problem Solving was an interesting class and Speck is a great lecturer. The class structure can be a bit frustrating, and your experience will vary due to the large amount of influence the TA has. A solid choice for a UGS.
The most passionate guy I have have ever met over a topic! The class is organized and the lectures are always great because of the energy he brings with each topic. There are just a few books for reading and a short paper for each, but the class is amazing! I highly recommend this class to anyone on the edge about it.
For most, this is the first architecture class you'll be taking, and for some this will be the last. Keep in mind one thing: memorization is key. Recognize buildings from multiple different angles with architect, location, and date, and you'll be fine. Speck is awesome. You'll love his class.
Speck is the best lecturer I've ever had. This class is amazing and so interesting. You will definitely get a good grade if you put effort into it and the class makes me want to give effort.
Good prof but the lectures can get a little boring at times. They are mandatory in that there is a question at the end of almost every one that essentially counts as attendance. Overall not a terrible class but not the best either
Funny, passionate, and informative lectures. As someone with no background in architecture or design, this course was accessible and fun. Focus on developing the vocabulary of describing buildings as well as memorizing themes associated with buildings and architects. There's a lot of reading.
I had no knowledge over architecture but Speck shows you some awesome works and architects. Understanding the architects he lectures over repeatedly is important as well as understanding basic vocabulary. Work load is average and has the potential to determine whether you make an A or B. Read the books too because theyre helpful and interesting.
While in class, some of the lectures were boring and I didn't feel like going was super exciting, after taking the class, it was definitely my favorite class of the semester because of the amount you learn without realizing. Attendance is the only reason why it wasn't an easy A+
Larry is a great lecture and makes architecture such an interesting subject. There is 3 books to read none above 250 pages. If you read, take good notes, and participate in discussion section you'll definitely get an A. The test consist of 3 parts; pt1 slide identification(20 points) pt2 10 MCQ(30 points) pt3 2 Essays (50 points) given beforehand.
I am an Electrical Engineering Major and I took it because it was required by my FIG and I absolutely loved it. Professor Speck is Sensational, and makes all material relevant to all individuals, allowing you to walk away enlightened.
Creative Problem Solving class in a boring, repetitive course in a dull format. Spends the entire lecture glorifying examples of creative people without giving any opportunity to test and improve the creativity of the students I dont know how Dr. Speck managed to turn a creative class to something so boring and assessed on memorization.
Great Professor. Truly cares about what he teaches.
Wild and wonderful professor! Most of the grading is done by the TA. 3 test + final. Must attend discussion. One presentation (fairly easy). A few 1 page papers. Test are based on reading/lecture(moderate difficulty). 3 books to read. The content of the course is great but the workload is a bit excessive, definitely have to work for a good grade.
Professor Speck is absolutely sensational. He is extremely engaging and passionate about the subject of architecture and puts a lot of time and effort into every single one of his lectures. I LOVED this class. Best teacher I have ever had. This is a MUST TAKE for undergrads trying to get their VAPA credit.
Larry is great. His lecutres are super engaging and easy to follow, but the tests can be demanding at times and nothing is curved. Overall, pretty solid class.
Amazing professor overall, definitely an honor to be in his class. It is not an easy A for sure, there's definitely three books you will read throughout the course and memorization of buildings, but great class and great knowledge to carry in the future.
Be sure to go to class! Attendance will lower your grade from A to B! And a lot of work. Anyway, its not a hard class but need your time.
A ton of work the first half of the semester, lots of readings, essays, and the exams are manageable. Nothing is curved and hope you dont get a bad TA
REALLY fun class. Larry is super passionate and really nice so the class lectures aren't too bad for a massive class. the TAs are pretty nice and knowledgeable about the major/class/sector. if you want to do well on the tests you really need to talk to your TAs and get pointers on what to fix on your essays. my TA was super nice and was available
Larry is so passionate, and he is able to inspire his students. If you miss a lecture, have a friend present so they can catch you up on what was covered. There are a few books required to read for the exams, but tiny details are also covered, make detailed notes! TA's are the only ones that make the class hard. Larry truly wants you to get an A!
Amazing professor and wants everyone to get an A in the class. Go to the lectures, read the books, and memorize what you need to and you will succeed. But I cannot stress this enough - make sure your TA is nice and grades fairly. They grade everything you do. You have to get close with them and prove you deserve an A. But overall a really fun class
I was fooled into believing it was an easy A class and very engaging. It is definitely not hard, but he isn't as great as everyone claims. His lectures were kinda boring although the material was interesting. Tests were very specific and try to trick you. I think there are easier/more entertaining courses to choose from to complete my VAPA
I love Larry Speck. His UGS class of Creative Problem Solving was interesting. He presented a lot of case studies from big successful figures who did creative problem-solving. Attendance comes from the twitter cards that you have to give at the end of the lecture. There is little memorization in tests. Projects are heavy in the grade. And papers.
Im not even exaggerating, this class changed my entire life. I literally cried on the last day because I wasn't going to be able to come back. Dramatic I know but just take it I promise you won't be disappointed. Requires barely any studying as long as you go to lecture and pay attention. Really an inspirational and knowledgeable professor.
So far the best professor I've had. He knows what he is talking about. He really tries his best to get you hooked on architecture just like he is. I would take this class again in a heartbeat. That being said, be prepared to study, but not so much that you feel overwhelmed.
Good lecturer and excellent architect. Very experienced and makes lectures fun, a few books to read but nothing outrageous.
Even though I only took his class as my VAPA credit, Speck is the best professor I've had at UT. He makes the material so interesting and relevant and you are guaranteed to learn a great deal. The course is very easy as long as you show up to class and keep up with due dates. He tells you what to study for the exams which makes it easy to do well.
Incredible class! Take it! Larry Speck is awesome! That being said, it is not an easy-A you have to study, but it's worth it.
I took this class bc of RMP ratings, his lectures are interesting, but how students are graded is very deceptive. For a survey course, there is a lot of work. The tests are memorizing lectures & readings, basically regurgitating lines larry says in lecture This class was enjoyable at times, but if you want an easy VAPA, I don't recommend this one.
I love Larry Speck! His class was amazing but not an easy A. The work load is heavy for a VAPA credit but I enjoyed the lectures. He is very passionate and knowledgeable which makes it fun. The TAs are genuine people but don't grade easy. If you're okay with a lot of work or not getting an A, then it can be worth it. I would still take this again.
Took him my first semester and it was the best decision I made. I learned a lot about architects and their work. The tests were relatively straight forward and the discussion was a good way to get information nailed in. It was my one class that I really enjoyed attending. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for a VAPA! He's also really funny
architecture is the hardest thing I've ever done. do not take as a VAPA if you are not an arc major. Be ready to know what is covered in every lecture, be able to identify building names and their architects, read multiple books, and do multiple assignments and projects, and then apply all this to buildings on campus not covered in lectures.
I dont know why the grade distribution for this class is so amazing on UTs website. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Larry Speck is amazing but the class itself is too hard and is based on too many conceptual topics about subjective matter and a lot of memorization. It is a really had VAPA. This class hurt my GPA and Im a STEM major.
DON'T TAKE FOR VAPA. this class is so unnecessarily hard, so many projects, so much reading, for the exam we have to prepare four essays beforehand because 2 appear on exam. you have to go analyze buildings, and it's very tidious..
He is a great man. However, with this switching to online, he didn't do much for the students. he left everything the same, and aside from the hour and a half lecture we have to watch, he gives a zoom of 30 mins. that's 2hrs of class every T/TH!!!!! don't take for VAPA! save your time and GPA.
The class is all lecture-based and it's super boring. Professor talks for an hour and fifteen minutes straight and uses pictures only on his powerpoints. Can't use laptop/ electronics to take notes. 4 exams, 3 essays, 2 projects. Take another VAPA course seriously it isn't worth it.
Professor Speck is the best professor I've ever had and probably ever will! If you are looking for a course that gives you a new perspective on the world this is it. It is not hard as long as you do the work that is required of you. That being said, his tests require serious memorization, so if that isn't your strength don't take this class.
Larry Speck is an absolute gem of a professor. As said in lecture 1, he's turned me into an architectural fanatic despite being clueless about it beforehand. I found every lecture fun and looked forward to the next one. This class is work (heavy at first) but getting an A isn't hard. It's more than you'd expect for a VAPA but it's entirely worth it
Lectures were like Ted Talks & an eye opener! He teaches you how to be successful through creativity. The way that he speaks is captivating with his creative, unique power points. He always encourages us to speak, but you don't have to. Grades based on easy 1 pg papers every week, twitter cards (exit tickets), 2 exams (Qs given before)!
By far the best professor I've had at UT. Super engaging lectures even though it's a massive lecture hall he makes the lectures personable. He's the most passionate professor I've ever had. Read the books - you'll learn something interesting and be set for the tests. It's an easy B but you have to put in the work for the A - sorta makes sense right
Larry is a respectable, cool dude. His lectures are interesting if you're into architecture, otherwise they aren't as provoking as everyone else seems to describe them. Your grade in this course is based solely off of your TA, and mine gave me 85's on literally every assignment without a good explanation for the points deducted. Love Larry tho
ARC 308 was an amazing class. Lectures were so thought-provoking, but I'm into design so this class was a good VAPA for me. You are 100% graded by the TA!! Mine was new but gave me a 92 on every paper/assignment so it was alright. Larry really cares about his students. Be sure to check out Larry's website. SKIM THE BOOKS! Study hard for tests.
Amazing lectures! Sometimes they got boring, but for the most part you are in for a treat. Discussion sections meet once a week and are mandatory. READ THE BOOKS! They aren't that long and are actually pretty interesting. All the VAPAs at UT aren't hard, just tedious & this one feels like it sometimes. But if you do the work you'll be just fine.
I would recommend this class if you are somewhat interested in architecture. Not the easiest VAPA class to take, which is why I would only recommend if you are interested in the field. Not an easy A, you definitely work for it. He's an amazing lecturer, and your grade depends completely on your TA. 3 tests, 1 final; can be tricky, read the books.
Larry Speck really is a phenomenal professor. I am a business major and I took his class for a Visual and Performing arts credit. Was this the easiest option? no. But his class was extremely interesting and I feel much better off after taking his class. Highly recommend giving this class a shot, I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did.
Larry is so passionate about what he does and an amazing lecturer which is nice during the pandemic! However, I think some of the grading is a little harsh for a lower division course. It should be easier to get an A in this class then for example Finance but the arbitrary grading makes that hard.
I took this class to get the VAPA credit, but I ended up really liking it. His homework this semester consisted of watching a couple of lecture videos before class. There were 3 books assigned that were relatively short and he gave you plenty of time to read them. He's a great professor and seems really passionate about what he teaches.
Larry Speck will always be one of my favorite professors. His youthful sense of humor and profound knowledge and passion about architecture makes him one of the best. After taking his class, I've seen the world a different way!
Larry Speck is one of the best professors I have had at UT. You will have to work to get an A, but if you study, and are passionate about the subject, that shouldn't matter. Professor Speck is very knowledgable about the subject, and you can really tell he loves teaching. The class is complied of 3 tests, 3 essays, and exit tickets, and a project.
Speck was great! Lectures were always interesting yet never failed to entertain. There is some reading required but nothing too bad.
Dr. Speck is by FAR the best professor during online learning. His prerecorded lectures are documentary quality and the architectural concepts of the course are taught so well. The TAs in the course also know architecture incredibly well and are fun to talk to. This class made me see architecture in a completely new light.
Took his Arch & Society class online during COVID, so had a bit different experience. This is a class that will literally change the way you view the world and the spaces you interact with. Did not visit his office hours, but heard he is a nice guy. Attendance isn't technically mandatory but there are short quizzes each class. Do your reading!
Larry is the coolest guy on campus. Took this class for a VAPA and cannot stop recommending it. If you're looking for an easy VAPA, pass. If you're looking to have your perspective/appreciation of the world completely elevated, register immediately. Interesting class, hilarious dude, and an easy A if you keep track of assignments/readings/tests.
Larry's amazing. I don't even study architecture and took this as an elective but he made it super interesting and really encouraged active learning. The class isn't hard; just watch the lectures. I only looked at readings when they were mentioned on the exams and had no issues. Think critically and use his vocabulary and you'll do fine.
I really enjoyed Creative Problem Solving! This semester, content was covered in short video "talks", and actual lecture time was used as a full-class discussion. Two tests, a few one pagers over the readings, and a project (report and presentation). Super easy class as long as you show up, pay attention, and participate in discussion/check-ins
Professor Speck is super passionate about architecture and loves engaging with students. We have to do a presentation and 3 'think sheets' that are technically 1 page but single-spaced (I averaged about 920 words). We also had to read required books and the tests had questions on them.
Great professor and very interesting class for VAPA credit. I highly recommend! The class does take effort, but an A is attainable even as a non-architecture student. Stay caught up and the class isn't challenging. Test questions were fairly straightforward and I felt well-prepared. Skim the required books.
Larry is so great. I was applying to architecture when taking his class, and he was more than willing to meet up in person during COVID and gave me amazing advice. I greatly enjoyed his class and getting to know buildings in the world. Would have this class over and over again.
This class maybe isn't the easiest VAPA credit, but this class is worth the little bit of extra effort. Professor Speck is a great lecturer who is really passionate about the subject and makes you realize the little aspects of architecture all around you. Tests are difficult, but easy to study for with essay questions centered around campus.
Professor Speck is truly a knowledgeable professor, his classes are always in the same order. Walk in, pick up the worksheet, listen to his lecture and look at the slides, and at the end he asks a "twitter card question" that counts for attendance. Pretty easy class, I took it as a VAPA credit. There are 3 tests, each with their own book to read.
Makes it easy to go to class and read the course material. His lectures are amazing! I took this class because I was looking for an interesting class to add on, and now Im applying to internally transfer into Architecture. Whoops! In the class you have to read the books, listen to the lectures, and get along with your TA and cohort members!
Lectures are amazing. Participation is a significant portion of your grade, so GO TO CLASS (and your discussion section). Take detailed notes to do well on the test. I found this class to be enjoyable, and about an average workload. It seemed more difficult around test time bc other stuff for this class was due simultaneously, but its manageable.
I took this class to fulfill my VAPA credit, but Professor Speck ended up being one of the best professors I took this semester. He is very passionate in his teaching, which inspires you to be passionate in the subject. The assignments and tests weren't difficult as long as you studied a little and read the books. Overall, a great class!
Really loves the buildings he teaches about, super enthusiastic about telling everyone about architecture.
Larry is a living legend and to have the chance to take one of his classes is a once in a lifetime opportunity. His lectures are phenomenal and although being an Architecture major, I found myself loving architecture all over again just from absorbing all of the interesting components and facts about architecture and design.
Took ARC 308 for my VAPA credit. Larry is such a great professor- passionate and makes you care about architecture even with no previous experience or passion for it. Easy A if you pay attention and put a little work in.
Tests have free-response questions pertaining to buildings on campus (pretty easy to do), multiple-choice, and match-the-building. Grading for the free response depends on the TA but overall the tests were easy. Lectures weren't really necessary but were all super interesting and fun. Larry cracked jokes often and just overall was super cool. 10/10
AMAZING DUDE--engaging lectures, loves telling anecdotes, tells you exactly what's on the test (study quizlets) & prepares you for them, a lot of writing assignments, but you FOR SURE WILL SEE BUILDINGS DIFFERENTLY (or want to switch into arc) LIFE CHANGING CLASS!!! TAKE IT!!
Pros: Hands down, the greatest lectures I've ever sat through. Speck will change the way you see the world. All of the work/readings are worth it because the content is so interesting. Cons: It's a lot of work: 3 content-heavy tests, 3 essays, 2 projects, 3 books. Yet, it won't feel like a waste. But if you don't have time, don't take the course.
Dr. Speck was awesome in Creative Problem Solving. The exams are easy if you pay attention in lecture and memorize the 10 word lists he gives. He's genuinely interested in knowing how the class feels about all of the topics, and appreciates opinions that differ from his own. There's a one page essay once every week or two.
the amount of engagement you get for a lecture hall class is genuinely impressive which really speaks to his dedication to hearing out what his students have to say. All the assignments are relatively free-form and malleable. the exams are easy just memorize the ten terms used in the lectures.
Prof. Speck is a phenomenal and passionate lecturer who is extremely skilled at imparting to his students the beauty and excitement that architecture possesses. The class is really well organized and laid out. I really enjoyed this class and believe Prof. Speck is one of the best professors I will have in my college education.
This guy got me going on what I want to do with my degree. Incredibly smart and wise over his field, and has a lot of insightful things to share. Unfortunately, the TA's in the class are a shame with crazy picky grading, which caused me to lose enjoyment in an otherwise exemplary class, since he is hands-off from the grading.
Awesome professor, best class I have taken at UT so far. Wish more professor's taught more actively like Dr. Speck. I recommend this class to anyone, 10/10.
Dr. Speck is by far the best lecturer I have had at UT, and he greatly shifted my perception of buildings. However, the TAs have a lot of liberty in terms of assignment deadlines and grades. Your grade is determined by lecture attendance, three tests, and five short assignments over a building chosen early on. Overall, the class is very manageable.
Such a good professor and very interesting content. Grading depends heavily on your TA, though, and it is a lot of work for a VAPA. All of your projects and papers are based on one building you choose at the start of the semester, so pick an interesting one. To study for the tests, use quizlet sets that already exist and you'll be fine ;)
Speck is a phenomenal dude. He makes his content enjoyable and relatable. Only issue I have is with the TAs in the class. Mine graded super harshly and gave me a B for all my effort. If there was a rate my TA she'd get a 1.
This class was fantastic. I paid rapt attention to every lecture, every minute. Attendance is mandatory, skipping will really affect your grade. Assignments are graded kind of harshly, but it's fine if you put effort into them. Not many assignments, presentation at end of semester. Kind of a lot of work since I took it as a VAPA, but so worth it.
His UGS class was very engaging and interesting. I loved the readings and the essays were usually only one page and I always received a 100. You do have to put enough effort in to read and form your own opinion on the topic, but he doesn't force his opinions on you like so many professors.
One of the best lecturers this world has ever seen. The class is moderately difficult and has a decent amount of work, but no class I have taken before has given a similar amount of understanding of the world.
Larry is a once in a lifetime lecturer and an incredible guy. Didn't think I'd be that interested in architecture but it is all I find myself talking about now! Grades depend largely on your TA but attendance is mandatory and 30% of your grade, so if you show up to Larry's lectures you'll do just fine. Tests are very easy if you study a bit!
Good professor, is interesting to listen to. Not many homeworks, but the exams are VERY dense. You have to draft 3-5 essays, memorize the names & appearences & architects of 40-80 buildings, and read a mid-sized textbook to prepare for each midterm, which are the main contributer to your grade
Prof. Speck is engaging, accomplished, and hilarious. Lectures are always interesting and Larry is always passionate and fun. You'll leave class looking at buildings in a new way.
I am Larry's #1 fan. I actually cried during the last lecture because I wasn't ready for this class to be over. The tests are super fair and they're genuinely interesting applications of what you learn in class. It's so clear how much he loves teaching this class and this material, and its infectious. Take this class if you can!
Speck has been my favorite professor so far. He is extremely passionate about architecture and that truly shows in his lectures. He is very caring and is a great professor to know. The exams are easy if you take good notes. You work up to a final project that was very interesting. Overall, the best class I ever took and it's not an exaggeration!
Very funny dude with a lot of good, interesting stories in his lectures. Actually makes you think in a way you haven't previously. However, as far as a VAPA credit, it is more work than some may want. Unless you are interested in architecture, choose a different class. It's very easy, you just have to properly prepare for tests and manage your time
Probably my favorite professors at UT. You do have to do work, especially in your discussion section with your TA, but guidelines are clearly laid out and there is plenty of review for tests and projects. He has the most dynamic lectures and makes the class so interesting. Do this as your VAPA. You will not regret it.
Easy but a lot of work. Grade is very dependent on your TA (most are chill). Lectures are interesting most of the time, but when you're tired you may have a hard time paying attention. Can make the whole room laugh with his jokes. Walks around the huge lecture room which can be hard to follow, therefore hard to stay engaged. Overall inspirational!!
This is an amazing professor. All of the pictures in class are buildings he's photographed, and the lectures are so good it is easy to remember content because it is actually interesting! It isn't a joke VAPA, but it is totally worth it. TAs grade everything, so build a relationship early on. Use quizlets, read, and tour the assigned buildings.
Larry speck is an AMAZING professor! He is truly passionate about what he does, which is reflected in how he talks about buildings. In the class, you choose a building at the start of the semester to do multiple papers, so choose wise! You do have to read A LOT in the class but you can get decent grades on exams by using Quizlet to study past exams
Super interesting and gained a new sense of appreciation for architecture through his engaging lectures. A high grade is also easy to achieve as long as you study a bit before a test and write your papers in time. A little more work than I expected for a VAPA though.
Larry was amazing professor! He was so passionate about architecture and really wanted his students to feel the same. When it came to grades, it was spread out across a bunch of smaller grades: 3 tests, 1 slides, 1 presentation, 3 short papers, and lots of attendance grades. Overall, I would gladly take a class from Larry again.
Larry is a fantastic lecturer who has been teaching this class with passion for years, and it shows. Very interesting class material that covers Architecture from a design perspective, practical perspective, and functionalist perspective. Pretty light workload, just go to lectures! Highly recommend for a VAPA/CD class!
I learned a lot during his lectures and have a deeper knowledge of architecture. He keeps lectures interesting with personal anecdotes. The workload is relatively heavy with 3 books, multiple assignments, and essay prompts. It is evident he is very experienced in the field and an amazing lecturer. His explanations were clear, concise and effective
TAs matter a lot in this course because that is who is grading your assignments, but all are amazing. Professor Speck is an amazing lecturer and never makes a class boring. He is absolutely great and teaches the material really well. Tests and assignments are easy if you prepare and are always graded fairly. Attending class is mandatory!
His lectures were extremely interesting. I always loved going to a new lecture and finding out what buildings we would talk about next. My personal favorite was when he went over how the windows of the John Hancock building started falling out- very chaotic!
His lectures are so boring. His voice is so boring. Talks about his architecture half the time. Lots of reading.
Larry is amazing. I learned so much about architecture from him, and I came away from the course with an appreciation for architecture I didn't have previously. Most if not all assignments and tests for the course are graded by your TA, so attendance at discussion sections is crucial. There are also three books you have to read. Highly recommend
As long as you go to the lectures and discussions the class is fairly easy. Do the readings too. Overall the class is pretty straightforward. Larry's pretty funny too. Kinda regret not going to his lectures.
Overall, the professor is a really good lecturer and the class is quite interesting. Some people say its the best class they've ever taken, I think that's a bit overhyped - no regrets though. Tests are fairly straightforward and easy but its a bit annoying memorizing architects/buildings, if that didn't exist this class would be a 5/5.
Your grade in this class is very dependent on the TA you get as they do most of the grading. The class requires some work (memorizing, reading, writing) but I think it is worth it. Lectures are inspiring, the material is really cool, and I'm coming away with a new interest and appreciation for architecture. Great professor, great class.
I had Larry Speck for Architecture and Society to fulfill my VAPA requirement and I can't recommend him enough. I'm not an arch major but he made the lectures super interesting and he's also just a funny guy. Lectures are required (they take attendance for a grade) but I didn't even mind going because of how interesting the class was. def recommend
LARRY SPECK IS AWESOME! Took his architecture class for my VAPA freshman year (as an advertising major) and it is still probably my favorite class I've taken at UT. Probably more difficult then some other VAPAs but so so worth it. Made me look at the world in a different way. Highly Recommend.
Dr. Speck is a good lecturer but overrated. The workload is a lot for a VAPA class, so if you're looking for a low-effort one, this isn't it. There are 3 exams tested over 3 books, 3 short essays, and 1 presentation. The work is pretty easy, but more than necessary. Also, the lectures can be interesting, but I spent a lot of the class on my phone.
Probably deserves a 3 but Speck's rating is way too high. Course is ALL memorization. Gave everyone 92s on the first assignment just so no one gets an A. Gotta read 3 books, memorize 150 buildings and write 3 essays. Don't read the books questions get recycled so use quizlets. Finessed the class and got an A to flex on Larry Speck's ass in the gym.
dr. speck is simply the most engaging, passionate, and worthwhile professor. i wish i could take more classes from him. his lectures are never boring and usually contain personal anecdotes from where he's been and what he's seen. this class really gives you an appreciation for architecture styles we see and the ideas behind them.
Professor Speck is the best. I would totally recommend taking this class as your VAPA credit. The class is incredibly interesting and the lectures are amazing. Although rote memorization is important for this course, the grading criteria is relatively lenient. There are readings and discussion sections that are important for the overall grade.
Great class for a VAPA credit. Not extremely easy, but the content was very engaging for the most part and I found it enjoyable. Attendance counts (there's a exit ticket type thing every lecture) Grading depends on your TA. Memorizing buildings isn't as hard as it sounds. There are 3 books but you can find the comprehension questions on quizlet.
Grade entirely dependent on your TA. Have to write notecards at the end of lecture, how hard they're graded depends on your TA but you basically have to show up to do it. You have to read three books and write two essays per exam (they gave essay prompts the week before and you had to prepare all of them, including going to the assigned buildings).
He is a cool person and definitely worth listening to his lectures. I didn't know at the time, but after taking the class and reflecting it I realised sometimes he wants you to see something in a certain way. So if you are interested one of his lecture topics I would look more into after the lecture and not just take his word for facts.
This class was a blast because of Speck. He's really passionate about architecture and even for someone who was just taking the class for a VAPA credit he made it very engaging. There are multiple books you will read in the class, some of which are interesting, but others can drag on a bit. Tests are mostly memorization.
He's really funny and his lectures are usually pretty engaging. As long as you do your work and listen in class, you'll be fine.
Larry Speck is hands down one of the best lecturers at UT. While the lectures were an 1hr30m long, Prof. Speck, was able to keep the entire class engaged and always managed to make a joke or two to make the whole class laugh. The tests were difficult, but multiple choice questions could all be found on Quizlet.
As someone who isn't very artistically inclined, I would not take this course for a VAPA. The course was very conceptual and the lectures could at times be hard to follow. There are better lower-effort VAPAs.
Grading is dependent on your TA. Some TAs don't give feedback on the Think Sheet assignments and refuse to give feedback when asked. Other than that, exams are just memorization of Quizlets and buildings. Essay prompts are provided in advance.
Overall a great prof. but sometimes the work felt a little tedious. If you want good grades on the tests make sure to study the quizlets that they send out and go look at the buildings in the essay questions. The books are required to read, but I didn't like them too much besides the middle book 'Thermal Delight.'
Professor Speck is a great lecturer who knows what he is talking about and is passionate. However, the assignments are tedious (2 presentations, 3 papers, 3 tests with two essays each). There was a lack of clear grading criteria and your grades are TA dependent. As for tests, make use of quizlets to memorize the buildings and questions.
Professor Speck is an incredible UGS Professor that helps first-year students get exposed to life at UT. I took his UGS class in Spring 2023. He gives very wonderful lectures and life-long lessons that help us prepare for future success. We have the choice of choosing any 5 out of the 8 think sheets, term projects, and 3 tests with essays.
Great experience, and super interesting content. However, it wouldn't be interesting unless you know you would enjoy architecture. Not easy for a VAPA, but not too bad. Exams aren't hard because they are easy to prepare for, but if you don't know your stuff, good luck. Exam essay prompts given 1 week before exam. Get ready to read assigned books.
Larry's a cool mf. He's been at UT since the beginning of time & done some really impressive architecture. Ppl typically try to take the easy way out w/ VAPAs, but this one's worth it in my opinion. Underestimated and failed my first test and still ended with an A. Know your stuff for the tests, put effort into the assignments, & you'll be locked.
Larry is hilarious and you can tell he knows what he's talking about. He taught my dad at UT a million years ago. His lectures can get a little boring every now and then so try your best to pay attention as lots of exam questions come from lectures and the reading. Overall interesting class with cool unique perspectives.
Larry Speck is one of the most captivating and enjoyable individuals within the campus community. While this class is advertised as a lot for just a VAPA credit, it's actually quite manageable, and the material is really engaging, regardless of one's interest in architecture. I wholeheartedly endorse taking this course with Speck to anyone.
I liked Professor Speck, but not the head TA. The grading on certain assignments seemed very biased and didn't follow the rubric given by our TA leading our discussions. There are 3 tests, 4 assignments, and participation grade through attendance. And considering this is only a VAPA, I think this approach ruins everyone's perspective on the class.
He is so cool this man is an inspiration and he has awesome shirts. His class is not difficult if you do what is asked of you, the tests are pretty straightforward if you do the reading and attend the tours at the beginning of the semester.
Creative Problem Solving with Larry Speck is the most uninformational boring class I have ever had to take. Larry rambles about topics of little interest or relevance and comes across as extremely privileged. The entire class is so theoretical and not idealistic. Attendance is mandatory because of notecards you have to turn in during every lecture
Dr Speck is an amazing professor with engaging lectures. He has a lot of great insight into architecture all around the world and has interesting stories about them all. How hard the class is depends a lot on your TA as they can give a lot of info about tests/assignments. To do well on the MCQ part of tests it's important to read the books.
I could not recommend Larry's ARC308 more. I came into this class looking for a vapa credit as business major, and I am currently in the process of switching my major to architecture solely because of Speck and this course! Course content was engaging and fun to learn and the majority of the test content was given beforehand.
Hands down the best professor I've had so far at UT. He speaks so highly about prior students and you can just tell he cares so much. Lecture attendance isn't mandatory, but he has you write short responses to the lecture at the end of each class and those count toward your grade, so you should go as much as you can. Definitely an underrated UGS.
Had Dr. Speck for UGS303 and the Architecture & Society class. His lectures are so fascinating and he is the most amazing storytellers. I literally used to look forward to class. If you personally reach out to him, he is so kind and helpful! He helped me get a shadowing opportunity at his company!
He's very entertaining and passionate about architecture. I feel like I learned so much. There are multiple writing assignments, pecha kucha presentation, and three midterms, which can be a lot of work but is still doable.
Larry Speck is the best professor I've had in college, period. Even if you're only slightly interested in architecture, by the end of the semester your perception of the field will be completely transformed. His lectures are insanely interesting and he's super engaging, so make sure you show up. Your grade is entirely determined by your TA, though.
Absolutely love Larry Speck. His lectures are pretty interesting and attendance is graded. There are a few writing assignments and projects that are actually pretty interesting work on - depending on your TA, grading can be a little annoying sometimes. Exams can be difficult but not impossible if you use your resources.
Dr. Speck is extremely passionate about architecture and you can see it in how well he lectures. The class was extremely interesting and I felt like I genuinely learned useful information. The essays on the tests become fun to write overtime and as long as you look over the study materials, you'll do great.
Speck is a very good lecturer. He knows what he's talking about because he is so passionate about it. This is easily seen even after the very first lecture. The assignments aren't bad and can be very interesting. Your grade is pretty much determined by your TA + grader though, as they all grade differently.
Professor Speck is one of the best and most respected professors at UT. His lectures were very interesting and very clear, although he sometimes goes on tangents and runs out of time. Overall this was a very fun and fascinating class, well worth all the work it required.
Prof. Speck's ARC308 class is a must-take. His lectures are engaging and insightful, offering a fascinating exploration of architecture. The workload can be manageable with diligent reading and studying. Unstuck ai proved invaluable for test prep, complementing the course materials.
Best class I've taken. Larry and his TAs are sick. His method of teaching is so different but it's effective and amazing.
it would be tough to end out this class without a new love or at least appreciation for architecture. speck is a brilliant lecturer and the discussion sections are organized well, this is a unique class.
Highly interesting! It connects creativity to fields such as history, neuroscience, civil rights, and organized movements. The tests do have writing but if you attend class and take notes, should be fine. There is a project in which you have to solve a real-world problem creatively, but it is doable and fun to see what your classmates have done!
Dr. Speck is very passionate and a good lecturer, but as someone taking this for a vapa credit, it's not worth it. Exams are easy to get an A on, but there is an essay portion which takes time to prepare for/memorize answers. There are also 4 papers throughout the course, and discussions are mandatory. Overall, it was too much work for a vapa.
If you are taking this for a vapa it is not the easiest but not too bad. Larry Speck is very passionate and accomplished and his lectures are very interesting if you are fascinated by architecture. If you have no interest in architecture you will be bored (or will gain interest because of him?)
Speck was nice. The class seems daunting at first, but it's not that bad once you figure it out. Just attend the lectures, take notes, and read.
Professor Speck is one of the best lecturers at UT. He is very passionate about architecture and inspired me with some of the buildings he talked about. The workload wasn't too bad, however, the essays and tests often are due/happening around the same time, so it is important to plan. Grading depends on TA, but mine was great.
If your taking architecture and society you chose a good course with Professor Speck. He is such an amazing professor and always makes time for his students. TAs grade everything but are very fair, it is an option-based class. As long as you pay attention you'll get an A. Larry Speck is the best professor and is regarded as a legend by students.
Larry doesn't allow technology, but it works in his favor. His lectures are very engaging and likely the best I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. The workload is also very light, but it could be graded harshly based on your TA. Mine, however, was great! Thank you Sam!
Speck is a phenomenal professor. His lectures are highly engaging due to his teaching style, which shows his energy and passion for the course. I took this course as a VAPA but I learned deeply about architecture. The workload is manageable but mostly dependent on your TA. Thank you so much for a wonderful semester Sam!
Larry Speck is an entertaining & knowledgeable professor who makes architecture way more interesting than you would expect. The 5 short assignments are easy and tests aren't too bad. Overall, pretty easy and fun class for a VAPA. Use Anki for the building memorization portion & actually read the books he assigns and you should be set.
Larry Speck is amazing. This man should be retired in a house in the Hamptons living off of his millions, but he loves teaching and you can clearly tell through his lectures. His lectures are AMAZING hilarious and engaging. 3 tests that require studying, 1 project, four 1-page paragraphs (lowest one is dropped). Attendance is taken in lecture.
Larry is an awesome professor and the lectures are super interesting. What workload to expect from the course: choose a building in the world and do a research assignment over it, write three reflection papers, and final short presentation over it. Three exams that are easy to study for and no final. Highly recommend for VAPA credit.
Speck's lectures are detailed and very eye-opening. I'm not an architecture major, but this class was very pleasurable and interesting regardless. He is easily accessible outside of class and very cool to talk to. Tests were more on the difficult side, but study guides make them much easier. Go to his office hours if you can! You won't regret it.
Speck has been teaching this class for AGES and is very enthusiastic during his lectures. Everything goes through and is dependent on your TA (grades, feedback, questions, etc). Attendance is worth almost as much as tests. You do have 3 books to read, but there's no final, plus there were only actually around 8 graded assignments (tests included).
READ THE BOOKS, go to the lectures (they're interesting and he's funny), study the buildings (the TAs make Quizlets for you) and you'll be just fine. The class was HUGE, but it was really fun and worth taking!
This guy is my goat. genuinely one of the greatest teachers i've ever had. very engaging lectures especially if you are interested in the topic. A lot of the people in my FIG hated the class but they already hated architecture so that should tell you something. The class was lowkey super easy. Most people I met outside of my fig loved it.
This class is very TA dependent. If you get a good easy grading TA this class is a breeze. Attendance is mandatory as there are notecard questions (but you can always go at the end of the lecture and turn it in and walk out). Honestly, found this class boring esp with no tech rule (lost effect in about 2 weeks) Larry is very knowledgeable tho
Professor is very nice, however lectures are very long and boring. Depending on TA, grading is either very lenient or very tough. Exams are memory based (memorizing architecture and architects, hyper-specific details about books). I would not have taken this class if I didn't need to, overall course isn't very well organized.
Depending on your TA, it should either be the easiest class or one where you have to read. I have no interest in buildings, so prof will talk a lot about buildings so I thought it was boring but very easy class. Take this class for an easy VAPA. Other than that though Speck is an amazing professor and very passionate about what he teaches.
LOVE LARRY SM!! Best professor i've had to far, truly cares about what he is teaching, easy class but very knowledgable, get ready to listen to some crazy stories.
Fantastic lecturer who breaks down concepts so that everyone can understand their importance. I took this class as an architecture major (required to), but this class is great for non-arch majors to understand the importance/relevance of the field. Exams easy and predictable/preparable; papers were short; overall interesting and easy A for a Vappa.
Great and intriguing lectures. Super super cool prof who is passionate about what he teaches. There is an attendance check through a very short write-up you turn in at the end of every class. 3 tests, not too bad. Your grade is determined mainly by your TA who assigns you a few very doable projects throughout the semester. Would take Speck again.
Super super cool prof who is passionate about what he teaches. Great and intriguing lectures. Big auditorium. 3 tests total. Attendance is checked through a very short write up that is turned in at the end of each class. Your grade is basically determined by your TA through a few small projects throughout the semester. Readings not needed for an A.
Cool professor. once did an assignment for 6 hours. you will have twitter cards to do every class hence attendance matters. cool TA's. Will learn something new, probably only as someone new to architecture, but it is easy and fun and cool to learn about, even as a biomedical engineer.
If you're even remotely interested in Architecture, Id 100% recommend this class. He made buildings so fascinating, every lecture was like he was telling a story. His TA's are so so so amazing and help with whatever you need. The think sheets were annoying to do but the TA's were lenient on deadlines and helped alot. I love Larry so much
Best class I have taken so far in college. The class is very interesting and the professor's interest is reflected in the way he teaches and how easy it is for students to remember things. I became really intrigued in architecture as an Engineering major and I keep following his work to this day.
The grading depends on the TA. If you put in the effort it is still relatively easy to get an A in this class. No final, just 3 tests and he basically tells you how to prepare. I took this as my vapa with my fig so I stayed relatively engaged the whole time even though the lectures could be lengthy. Also Speck is sooooo cool.
LOOOVEEE Larry!!!! Took him for Fall 2024. I always looked forward to this class. There where 3 books to read that where on the test. You did have to memorize buildings and architects which wasn't bad. Larry is really passionate about his work and what he teaches. I would totally recommend his class. Inspired me to look at architecture differently.
Larry is amazing, highly recommend for VAPA. Easy as long as you try hard, TAs are also super chill. Attendence is through notecards at end of class and are big part of grade. 3 exams and a couple of assignments graded by TAs. Awesome class and I now look at architecture differently because of it!
Good VAPA even if you aren't interested in architecture, Speck makes lectures very interesting. Easy to get an A if you go to most lectures for attendance and take notes. TAs are also very helpful, lenient graders and helpful to prepare for tests during discussions. Tests are straightforward and easy to study for!
Larry is frankly one of the best and most impactful professors at UT. You will be blown away by his lecturing skills and knowledge. Leo is the best TA ever and really made the course great. It is a great class that changes the way you think, although the exams are all handwritten essays and there is a project you work on during the semester.
I went from not caring at all about architecture to talking to my friends that the PCL was built with great thermal considerations in mind. Speck is a rock star, favorite class I've taken at UT! Grading very TA based, easy exit quizzes every lecture, some memorization required for the tests, but not a big deal IMO
Larry is very good at lecturing, he is so passionate about it and it makes you interested in what he is talking about. Tests are not too hard, mostly some memorization. As long as you keep up with the readings and pay attention in class, you should easily be able to get an A. TAs are very helpful in helping you prepare. Would recommend.
Super fun class. You will definitely learn a lot and the class is super interesting overall.
Larry Speck is a class act. I originally took this class to fulfill a VAPA requirement, but it ended up giving me a deep appreciation for architecture. Although he doesn't allow computers during lecture and insists on handwritten notes, he truly makes the class worthwhile. Professor Speck is one of the most brilliant professors that I've ever had.
Really engaging class. I took it as a VAPA credit and don't regret it. As long as you do your work on time and study the buildings for exams, you are guarantied an A.
Speck is the best! I didn't think I'd enjoy a UGS class as much as I did. His lectures are funny and engaging and it kept me wanting to come to class. He can be a bit blunt, but loves discussion and is very approachable. TA will decide your grades (and mine graded very slowly), but otherwise a very solid UGS!
Tests are based on books and lectures so always take notes; building identification is common but if you study, they should be easy. Your TA should prepare you with practice test and book summarization classes. Besides the tests and a few building analyses, the class is mostly lectures that I found entertaining and enjoyed thoroughly.
Larry speck is THE greatest professor of all time. He has so much aura you can feel it anywhere on campus. I once ran into this man in the gym reading brothers Karamazov. I love this man.
This man is very accomplished, and learning from him is an honor. The course itself isn't hard, but you have to put in some work to get an A. The grades you get are decided by the TA you have, so if you have a strict TA who grades harshly, the class will feel more difficult. The course content is interesting and very enlightening. Amazing lectures.
Fall 2024. Speck's lectures are very interesting, and if you miss them, there are recordings of all of them on his website. This course is split into 3 sections: Form, Physical, and Human Factors. Each section is paired with a book you are expected to read outside of class. Lots of buildings to memorize for exams. Pay attention and you'll be fine.
The class was a bit tough because my TA was a picky grader and the only reason i didnt q drop this class was because of Larry. I see this guy at greg every day and bro he's so chill and the funniest lecturer ever. The class is honestly a hit or miss because your grade really depends on your TA. There is a curve though and my 92.4 got me an A.
Take this for your VAPA. Very interesting class, Dr. Speck is so passionate and it makes the class so much better. Genuinely changed the way I think and see the architecture around me. Not too bad in terms of work, seems heavy at first but it gets lighter as the semester goes on.
There's a reason he's consistently rated one of the best professors at UT. He's worked with some amazing architects, and he has a ton of notable works himself. Have to take this class if you're an architecture student. Tests are largely memorization, book questions, and essays that are posted beforehand. Lectures are really entertaining.
His lectures are quite engaging, but the content is extensive—taking notes is essential. He has archived videos available for review. The exams are challenging.
I absolutely loved this class. I didn't try very hard, and I still ended up with an A. Professor Speck is so passionate about his work, and the lectures are fun and interesting. He makes you appreciate the beauty of buildings. He took us on a field trip around campus instead of class once. There is barely any homework, and it really is an easy A.
This was my favorite class this semester. Professor Speck is so passionate that it's contagious, and now I love buildings too. While this definitely isn't the easiest class, some basic effort really pays off and it's really easy to get an A.
Assigned 3 books for the semester, long repetitive lectures, class is very heavily based off of your TA, they decide if you do well or fail. Class is interesting at times and you do learn but it isn't worth it due to the large homework load.
This was easily one of the greatest classes that I have ever taken in my entire life. Larry is hilarious and teaches some of the most entertaining lectures. The class requires a bit of active work, including projects and examining architecture, but it is honestly very enjoyable. Made me consider changing my major to architecture. Love Larry!
Don't risk it. People that rate higher had great TA's. If you are unlucky and get a TA that is not one of the few good ones tough luck. The lectures were boring and almost impossible to stay awake for. 3 books that you have to read, but you can get away with skimming them and looking for the same buildings mentioned in class.
Dr Speck is incredibly qualified and a fun guy once you talk to him. The workload was pretty light aside from a few assignments spaced throughout the semester. 20% of your grade is attendance, so if you show up this is a nice buffer. There are some readings, but I got by with skimming them and reviewing the questions on them from past exams.
Dr. Speck is a career architect and an amazing guy who is more than happy to show his deep passion for architecture. He has a natural sense of humor, and his experience in the field makes his lectures great. 10/10 choice for a VAPA credit for those who want to learn a lot from a highly decorated architect who even has his own Wikipedia page.
Good professor, easy material, but the class was definitely TA-dependent. Lectures were pretty boring, but all the test material can be found online, so it's not too bad. Just pray for a good TA because they grade everything.
Amazing professor, Speck clearly cares a ton about the topic and is an accomplished architect himself. The difficulty is really based on your TA, but you get tons of information to prepare for tests.
For this class it is best to take notes on the buildings listed on the handouts and anything discussed in a list like format. There is not a lot of coursework and the TAs grade all of it. Your grade can depend on the TA. My TA graded harsher than some, but gave excellent feedback that helped with future assignments. (Shout out Kayla, ILY!!)
Lectures at times can be repetitive, I ended falling asleep quite a few times. Tests are based on building identification, books he assigns, and essay prompts that are given a week before the test. Good amount of studying was required for me personally, but depending on your TA, essays and other assignments will be graded fairly as was in my case.
Professor Speck has truly made architecture so much more interesting and important to me! His lectures were captivating and humorous most of the time. Most grades depend on your TA. Resources are generally accessible through his website and Canvas. As long as you keep up with the work and read the books, it should be manageable.
Professor Speck is an extremely inspiring person. If you have even a slightest interest in buildings please take this class!! You will 100% think about your surroundings differently after each lecture. The workload isn't too heavy and it's not hard to get an A. I would recommend this class to everyone Speck is such a goat.
I took this class for my VAPA & would highly recommend it! Lectures were interesting and funny. Tests are not bad either, so long as you memorize the buildings and use the study guides provided by TAs.
This is a required course for architecture majors, so if you're using it for a VAPA, take another course. Mandatory attendance, difficult tests, numerous essays, and a lengthy research presentation. The lectures aren't interactive, and you have to read a lot. Speck is passionate, but there are way easier classes to take. Had to grind for an A.
Great and passionate lecturer. You can tell that he's done this for a long time and he's super engrossed in the topics he teaches about. He barely uses his slides for his 1.5hr lectures because he knows the info by heart. Great prof, relatively difficult class. Would definitely recommend. (Test grades depend heavily on TA quality).
