i thought Dr. U was a great teacher... it was a gread course and there were only 2 of us in there but he explained everything very clearly for me and i'm NOT a Philos. major. he was smart and funny and nice.

He is the most boring teacher out there.LIkes to say 'HUH' after every sentence which gets annoying. But he's Jewish, so your classes are cancelled for Jewish holidays

He's a great teacher, makes you think...A LOT. Blackboard info helps, also counts for class part. points if you post on the discussions. Req'd books are cheap and small, tests come from notes and readings. Not easy,but if an acctg major can get an A?

He is ungodly boring, although he is a nice guy, and trys to rub his love for ancient philosophy on his students but does a poor job b/c he ends up lecturing non stop to the point that I would usually fall asleep.

He's got a passion for his subject, and he tries to open students' eyes to it. Easy quizzes, lots of online (via Blackboard) info, cheap book that uses actual original philosophic texts.

This course is hard and you have to read and keep up but you really learn a lot. Knows his stuff but very openminded to student ideas. Extremely enthusiastic and seems to love teaching.

This was the best class I have had! It was hard but you learn so much about history and the philosophers and how to read them yourself. You have to go to class and do the readings the way he says but I did and got an A. Very fair and great personality.

Well I thought it was a good one. Readings were impossible at first but interesting after he explained them. He helped us understand difficult stuff and always tried to be helpful. He taught the philosophers ideas and I liked that.

Great guy, loves what he's doing, but extremely boring. Had him 7-10pm, and would literally be put to sleep. Wants you to learn, but I think too much for an intro class. Got away with not buying book, he posts readings on blackboard. Managed a B.

I found him fascinating. He really knows a lot, and I was surprised how much philosophy connects with science and politics and even math. The readings were hard but interesting after he explained them.

Dr Udell is a kewl guy, I had him for logic and he gives some of the clearest explanations you'll ever get from a philosopher. I wouldn't say the material is easy, but if you stick with practice problems (logic coach makes this EASY) it's hard to get a bad grade here.

he's explains everything so you basically don't even read the book (which he made himself), take notes in class and he drops your lowest grade if you go to 90% of the classes...even thursday nights aren't too bad.

Best class I have had here. The readings are hard, but you start to really like them cuz he explains them so well. He tells you that he really wants you to understand the different philosophers and teaches you how to read them. That is so cool. And he is totally not biased toward any philosophy.

He is awesome. I worked at it, had difficulty with a lot of the material. I did so bad on the tests, yet he said what I get on the final is what I get in the class. He doesn't care about the school agenda...He wants you to know the stuff. He is funny, smart, and witty. If you want some tools to take out in the world, Udell is the man!! Awesome

Good teacher, only really cares if you understand the material presented or not. He is very helpful if you ask questions of him and he words his tests so that they don't trick you. Can be difficult to listen to for 3 hours straight sometimes, but who isnt.

at first i thought this class was gonna be impossible because its very abstract but he is really good at explaining it and he is very good at explaining it. its not real easy stuff but if you keep up with the work you will learn it and do fine.

Nice, funny, a great teacher. He loves what he does and is ALWAYS willing to help. He is funny and has a great personality. I'm not taking any more philosophy courses, but if I was, I would definitely take him over again! Take him if you have the chance!

This class at first is hard, but once you understand udell, its not that bad. try to see if you can get this class in the afternoon because having it at 8am on tuesdays and thursdays the man willl put you to sleep. does tend to get sidetracted and can drag on with stuff that doesnt even partain to what you are learning about. overall, not too bad

I went to his class 4 times: the first day, the first exam, the second, exam, and the final. I still got a B. If you can teach yourself, buy the book and use the CD-rom in the back of the book to learn. Obviously, I don't know his true teaching style but he is the only prof I know that advertises his AIM screenname. I just that's cool.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Dr. Udell's class is boring but he really goes out of his way to give you extra credit opportunities and help. He says "Hmm?" after every sentence though. Once I counted how many times he said it in one 2 1/2 hour class period: 127 times. Ugh. Anyway, this class is easy, go for it.

I'm a bio major and I took this class just to fill a gen ed. I never paid any attention in class or read the chapters. I got an A in the class for writing journals and good essays on the test. He's really nice and laid back.

i didnt realize how much math was involved with this class. no one bothered to tell me what i was getting into. so i found myself mid semester drawing pictures more then i was listening. udells definatly a good guy, but i'm not going to say that i didnt fall asleep a couple times before i stopped going to class. udells not bad

Didn't know what to expect going in basically dissecting literature and understanding termonology. I liked how he put the pieces together, cheaper book. Interesting character. Says hmm..a lot, but it snaps you back from you daze. You understand the material and discuss. Interesting how philosophy has impacted us today! Take him, learn, and do well.

Prof. Udell is extreamly help full and very easy to communicate with. You get points for attending class so go!! You have to read the book and take notes in class and you will do fine. He has three exams and three essays that are easy to write! def recommend him!

he's awful to listen to for extended periods of time, but gives you EVERYTHING you need to ace his tests. not only does he go over the text and provide powerpoints, he gives you study guides and the essays are take-home. find a study buddy and make outlines, and its really easy to ace.hes a really great guy and really helpful/easy to access.

Great teacher and helpful! Take notes IN the book and study from that, he gives you everything you need to do well on the test. The essays are harder, I had a lot of trouble with them, so if your unclear about something, just ask. I would recommend getting a used book (if you can) and have the notes already in them, mine is on amazon if you want.

Dr. Udell, a very nice guy and truly knowledgeable about philosophy, makes for a horribly boring 3hr class. He does not write on the board, use a PowerPoint, or any supplementary material. The entire time, he talks at you. The tests are not very hard, however they are poorly made. As an English major, the essays are not exactly the best either.

Have taken a lot of philo. classes at WCU and have to say that Udell has been the worst philo. professor. He doesn't allow for discussion in this course, nor does he condone questioning of the philosophies. He lectures for the whole class, which makes the class boring. I do not recommend him for his 101, maybe he is better for other philo. classes.

My 3 hour class was not the most exciting thing in the world, and granted he might be a tad dry regardless of class length. But he goes through the book, tells you all you need to know, and provides study guides. Smart guy and a good professor.

Class is easy if you attend, take notes, and read material. Tests are easy, essays are hard. I found that he makes dull, tough material easier to understand and actually kind of interesting. Definitely would take him again if I were a philosophy major.

Very hard for a gen ed. He is a nice guy but is so confusing. Makes you take a lot of notes and you always need your book. If you miss a day you get so confused. Essays were so hard and he expects a lot from you tests were multiple choice with some fill in the blank. He gives study guides but does not go over them. I suggest taking another class

Dr. Udell is great teacher. I would not be able to understand the readings without his help. His class is three hours long and at times could be boring. But he did his best at making the class fun, and he has a good sense of humor. Also, his tests were easy, reminded me of a history test in high school. His essays are much more difficult though.

Udell is a great professor. Intro to Philosophy was interesting. He gives you all the material needed to get an A. People in my class were so rude showing up late and talking in class, it really bothered me. He is such a nice person, be nice!

Lectures were boring, but as long as you do the reading and highlighting beforehand you can follow it and it'll help you understand best. Gives extra credit points at the end of the semester if you participate with the clickers. Nice guy.

This class was very challenging for me but dr. Udell is excellent at breaking everything down to help you understand the material. The people who complain about him obviously aren't willing to put in the effort necessary to get a good grade. Dr Udell is one of the nicest guys and very knowledgable. Hardest professor i've had he was no help at all when i went to him. Has no respect or care for students who have learning disabilities. the book you use is one that he wrote and edited himself so he knows everything. You really have to read and go to every class to class. I passed barely with a D.

Dr. Udell sincerely has a passion for Philosophy and his enthusiasm toward the subject is just about all you'll get with him. He is unclear, disorganized, and very forgetful. The whole class he will talk and talk and he keeps you after class time. The readings are very long and boring and the essays are impossible. SIMPLY DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS.

Don't do it. If you don't need to take this class, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It is confusing and so boring. You will have a ton of homework and will eventually have to teach the material too yourself. The essays are nearly impossible and he has some of them due after the semester is over.

You get lots of reading assignments, 3 tests, and 6 essays to write. The course requires a lot of your time for no reason. Rather than teaching you the philosophies Udell has you listen to him talk about them without ever actually explaining them. Expect to do a lot of work and maybe get a C+. Class averages for tests were always in the low 70s,

Udell was a great professor. His lectures are long and he assigns six papers but the papers are only like 600 words each. You have two exams and one final exactly like the other two exams. You will have to read but I didn't read everything and I still walked away with an A in the class. You're going to have to go to class though. I'd take him again

Class is hard because he doesn't make you copy notes nor teach you about anything that will be on the exam. Makes you watch videos of him actually giving his lectures instead of in class. Plus the very confusing textbook ,he wrote and edited so he knows it inside and out. DO not recommend

Professor Udell loves to talk in class and his lectures are easy to follow. There's a lot of reading involved outside of the classroom. As long as you highlight the text, read it several times, watch his video lectures, and pay attention to him in class, you'll do fine. If you write notes in the margin of the text, it's helpful for studying.

HONESTLY, WORST CLASS I HAVE TAKEN AT WEST CHESTER. I am a freshman and am 3/4 done with the course and this man has taught me nothing. I was excited to take this class then walked in on the first day to this man. I take back every thought of excitement I have ever had. Hard class and pointless to even go if your not going to do the hours of work.

Do not. I repeat do not take this professor. He is absolutely awful. The material and textbook (which he wrote) are super boring and hard to understand. The readings/hightling are no help in understanding the philosophies. The entire class consists of him talking non stop and he frequently goes past class time. Don't waste time with this class

Udell is not a good professor. The topics aren't hard and if you do the readings, and are a strong reader, you will be ok, but he is very unorganized in his thoughts. He only takes attendance when he remembers, or when someone reminds him, and going to class is pointless because he puts his lectures online. Overall, the class & prof. were annoying.

This class is absolutely horrible, I recommend nobody take it. No matter how much work you put into his essays, he will most likely give you a bad grade. His exams are very difficult, and his class in general is so boring. I do not recommend this class and it's teacher.

His lectures are so boring and usually end up off topic. The only grades you have in the class are the two midterms, with two essays for each and then the final with one big essay to go along with it. When it comes time to study for the test you basically have to teach yourself everything because his lectures are so useless. I would not recommend.

Don't do it. He makes you buy a textbook that he wrote, and he only lets you highlight what he says. He assigns a million papers that are graded very harshly, and each exam includes tricky multiple choice that aren't easy followed by two essays. Even for the final it is a long exam AND TWO essays. It is all lecture and attendance is graded

In this class you get what you work for. If you work for the A then you will get it. When he talks in class, he will say almost every question/answer on the tests, so you have to listen/ pay attention in class! Do the highlighting & write down what he says exactly because those are the test questions. Anything he emphasizes will 100% be on test.

I've literally never hated a class so much in my entire life. He expects way too much for a 101 class. Attendance is mandatory and yet he also posts HOUR LONG lectures on d2l and expects everyone to watch them. He only lets you highlight what he tells you to highlight and he lectures a full hour and 15 mins with a 5 min break. SO BORING.

First, he spits when he talks don't sit in the front.. He tells you the only way you can learn the class is by reading the book which is extremely confusing with or without his highlighting. Also i fought the urge to sleep every class because his lectures are so boring and always go off topic. Never talks about tests or gives a clear guide for them

His class is a fairly easy A, especially if you're a good writer. Bothers me that he makes you buy his book brand new and highlight it so you can't sell it after the class is over- definitely a money-making scheme on his part. He is actually a great teacher, if you pay attention and come to class. I didn't read a single thing, I just took notes and watched the videos. He will tell you exactly what will be on the test, and his study guides are pretty specific. He does get off topic often, though.

Incredibly boring. Makes a sound similar to Kanye Wests Huh?!? several times every lecture. Something like 40% of your grade depends on his subjective opinion of your philosophy journal. Would not take again.

By far the worst professor I have ever had. He does not explain anything well at all. He talks the whole time and there is no room for discussion. He talks all nonsense and does not make sense. Made me want to rip my hair out. It is not hard to get at least a B if you use sparknotes for the readings, quizlets to study, and take notes.

Attendance mandatory, regardless of the fact that he literally doesn't do anything in class besides ramble on about nothing. Everything you need to know he posts in long lecture videos and is too vague when it comes to studying for a test. You also need the book and he requires it to be a brand new one. Kinda scammy to me.

Udell's class required a lot of reading and was very heavy in class conversations and he wasn't afraid to call people out who hadn't come prepared. He takes attendance and never lets out early. Is weirdly obsessed with The Matrix. His exams are pretty easy if you keep up with the work and the journal entries are easy to make up, but take time.

Professor Udell lectures in class about anything he would like, and it's not very specific to the book. However, he assigns videos and powerpoints to watch on your own time, and recommends you read the book multiple times. Lots of readings, and boring classes.

No open class discussions on philosophy. Readings are boring, hes boring, and long winded. If youre sensitive to odors he could use a shower I could smell him from the back. If you do have the displeasure of taking his class do the readings, and dont forget about his journals he is very picky his mother was an English teacher. PS he loves Rawls.

he has good intensions, but his class is so difficult. attendance is mandatory for absolutely no reason because he posts 15-20 minute lecture videos online. requires you to buy his book (new) for class so you can read and do highlighting every single night. you'll get a good grade if you actually pay attention but i highlyyyyy do not recommend.

He doesn't write notes for class he just spews out random things about philosophers and expects you to remember it for the exams, doesn't give any study guides for any of his quizzes, doesn't tell you what to write about in weekly graded journals but then grades them very very harshly. He's a nice guy I guess but wouldn't recommend not taking him.

Dr. Udell lectures the whole entire class which ends up being extremely boring and hard to focus. Although, if you know what is on the study guides you should do just fine. Also, if you utilize his office hours he will give you a point towards your grade. He just wants to see you put the work in. Definitely more work than any other level 100 course

For your own sake, do not take him. He lectures the entire class period, and as if listening to him drag on for an hour and a half wasn't enough, he makes you watch his lectures and do about 15-20 pages of reading for homework. He gets off topic very easily and if you stop paying attention for one second, you'll lose the entire discussion.

Prof Udell is one of my favorite professors at WCU. I am not a philosophy major, but have gone to him outside of class and he is so sweet and just wants you to succeed. You will like the class more if you put in the effort. If you just sit there, you won't get anything out of it and it will seem boring because the material is not straightforward.

Very hard class and I almost dropped it but I'm so glad I didn't. I have gained so much from this class in literally every single class since. You need to be engaged in the class especially when it comes time for your journals. Make sure you come to class with the highlights done. STUDY for the tests. The readings are mentioned throughout life

He is a nice person and definitely shows a passion for philosophy - however, the class is rather dry and boring, and he lectures the WHOLE class period which seems to make me want to leave and take a nap. Get ready to read - A LOT. Lots of difficult readings. If I could go back and choose a class, I would choose a different one.

Do not take this class if you want a good gpa. His grading is very hard and in the beginning he warns us about not having above a C for our journals, so that means he is already setting you up for failures. I am warning you, do not take this class.

I had Dr. Udell this past semester and do not understand all the negative reviews. Is he tough? Yes. However, if you genuinely try and put in effort, you will not fail. He also has a true passion for what he is teaching and helps any student in need.

Professor Udell is an interesting character. You'll enjoy his class more if you don't have other intensive writing courses at the same time. He is very knowledgeable, and loves to lecture. His favorite philosopher is certainly John Rawls, a person you'll hear a lot about. The work can seem like a lot at times but just stay on it and you'll be fine.

Professor Udell is such a sweet guy but I really struggled in his class. There are no tests or quizzes but you have to do journals. The journals have to be at least 7000 words if you want a decent grade. you also have to highlight the textbook which is pretty easy but the journals are what got me. If you dont like writing def dont take this class.

If I could go back in time I would not take this class. The professor seems very into philosophy and is really nice but he grades ridiculously hard for no reason. He automatically thinks you do not understand the subject when your journal is under 5000 words. Do not take this class if you cannot write long papers about such a hard topic.

The class isn't that hard to pass. He gives you a couple pages of highlighting before class and posts a pdf telling you what to highlight, then go to class and take all the notes in the book. Write down what he says and use that in your journal. I hit 5000-6000 words easy that way. I also write the journal the day before its due and still passed.

Do not take this professor First off he makes you buy a 55$ textbook that is written by him so he gets most of the profit im sure. 2nd off there is no tests which sounds awesome but instead there are 4 ten thousand word papers. No exams, only 4 large journals that require about 8000+ words in them throughout the semester. He makes you buy a physical copy of his book, and highlight specific passages in it that he checks along with attendance every class. It is also the most boring class you'll ever take. He spends half the time repeating what he said the last class. Yawn.

Dr. Udell is absolutely one of the best professors across WCUPA. He wants to teach people HOW to philosophize rather than to just force them to memorize ideas and who they are associated with. Only journals, no tests or quizzes. The journals should be exploring the ideas. Highlighted readings are great for those learning to read Phil. 10/10

Im currently more than halfway through his philosphy 100 course. while he truly cares about what he teaches and wants you to learn as well, if you are just taking this course for an elective go to another professor. He only teaches for people who are very into philosphy. Plus he wrote the textbook and makes you buy a physical copy. its 55$+ taxes.

This class only has six graded things and 4 of them are journals which basiccaly make up your entire grade. You have to write a crazy amount of words and really take notes in order to get a decent grade on the journals. Its so time consuming and difficult as he doesnt provide a clear prompt for any of the journals.

His lectures are extremely boring and he just rambles about random things. Journals take a lot of time and need to be long but he isn't a super hard grader and I got good grades on all of them. Do the highlighting and show up to class for easy points. And try to pay attention in class and just write whatever he says in your journal.

as my first ever college class, and it was something! the textbook for me, at least, extremely hard to i think i cried more than read the book. but try to pay attention, just write down everything he says, he goes over every page of the book. but the highlighting is annoying, and counts as a grade but helps you figure out what to talk about.

Each lecture is him talking for the entire 50 minutes, and he often kept us a few minutes late. We also had to do lots of highlighting in the textbook, which he wrote and is required for the course. The worst part of the is the Journals. You have to do 4 journals, each of which needs to be extremely long and in-depth to get a semi-decent grade.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WORK. Should be offered as a writing requirement. Done an ungodly amount of reading and writing. Assignments include highlighting in textbook, and up to 2-3 books to read a week on Kindle. No tests, only 4 journals (must be 7000+ words) about the philosophers and their philosophies based on the textbook and articles.

Really cares about the material. Very clear with what he expects from the class. The amount of writing required for the class is very high. Grades fairly. I submitted something late and he was really understanding. If your good for the writing then you are good for the class. Lot of writing.

The class is graded by attendance, highlighting material before each class, and the four journals. I wrote 6500-7000 words for each journal and got an A on all of them. Pay attention during the lectures, take notes of what he says, and you'll have enough material for a good grade. Class demands a lot of outside work for the journals though.

This class consists of Udel lecturing/rambling 50 minutes a class. No tests but there are four journals throughout the semester, based on a book that makes sense after being reread 15 times. "A" standard is 7,000+ words. You need to go to class and write everything down that comes out of his mouth or you will have a very difficult time.

Udell is passionate about philosophy and a nice man. He made philosophy interesting to me. Lectures for the whole class. A lot of difficult reading material, but if you listen in class, it's easier. Grade consists of several very long journals, so you need to read and write as much as you can about the readings. DONT PROCRASTINATE

You're graded on very few things and it can be difficult to recover especially since he doesn't allow/offer any sort of extra credit. Be prepared to write because even though he says that the amount of words doesn't matter for your journal he is looking for upwards of 7000-10000 words per journal and there are four during the semester.

Did his journal and even did the tutoring center. He said the tutoring center won't help and that they just gave me random things to write. He said we should spend 2 hours alone on his class outside of it. He makes you write a bunch and I have trouble reading and writing and cant write what is expected. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS.

He gives us 4 journals that need to be at least 4,000 words and you need to basically listen to every word he is saying to be able to add it into the 4 of your journals. People complain most likely because they don't show up or care for the subject. Prof Udell is engaging and you can tell that he loves what he teaches. As constructive criticism I will say that the length of our journals is a lot especially for a 101 class. Other than that he's very kind and cares about his subject.
