very boring and very hard tests!!
Straight up...this guy is an @$$. Walks around with a chip on his shoulder because he is an academic. I have seen him be unfair and disrespectful to students. He's lucky he's got tenure, because most of the SPOTs always suck.
One of the best at the school; cares about his topic and his students; makes a genuine effort to make early hst lectures interesting and in-depth. If you want to get your monies' worth, go Usilton!
This guy sucks. Not very nice.
Tests are impossible. If if come down to it and you have to take Usilton, drop out of college!
this class was interesting but no matter how hard you study, the tests are still difficult. the book was of no use at all and barely any of the information on the test came from it. it was a waste of money.
Awesome teacher. If you don't enjoy history he may seem a bit difficult because all of the test material comes from his lectures and nothing comes from the book. If you love history make sure to take Usilton!

this class sucks esp if you dont like history has a project due at the end of the semester n helps with none of your ?s his notes are only from what he says in class, no slides, book is useless puts not emphasis on anything spelling counts cont...
He gives very good notes and makes class enjoyable through his ****ed comments that he uses to "relate" to the material.
Mr. Usilton lectures the whole period and puts me to sleep. He thinks he is funny, but it is not funny at all. The test are very hard, while studying is non-helpful.
Not reccommended for non-history majors. Highly reccommended for them. He's brilliant but very down to earth and approachable. His tests are hard and picky, I admit. Teaches some great subjects though.

passionate about the subject...does have a way of making it interesting, tests suck! like writing essays, fill in the blanks without a word bank, writing out definitions on tests? if you do this class is for you, if not, there's sure to be an easier
Do not take Dr. Usilton unless you have to take one of his courses to graduate. His class is not worth the stress that it brings on. His tests are impossible and the book was a waste of money. He's a nice guy personally but an @$$hole on assignments.
Very nice and funny guy. Very hard class. He is a great teacher but the test and research paper are brutal.
Usilton is the man.
This man is a great professor. He knows his subjects that he teaches and teaches them very well. He is very hard and his tests were all short answer and essays. Not a teacher for non history majors, but is for those who want to learn.
He is a good teacher and very learned and passionate about his subject, but it's very difficult to get the swing of his tests and he's not very clear on essay assignmens, making it hard to make a good essay grade. Not an easy class.
Great Teacher......
AWESOME! You'll work hard but it's worth it! Great lecturer and expert in his field.
Usilton makes lectures almost entertaining, and I actually enjoyed coming to his class. Tests were not that brutal as long as you payed attention and took very good notes. Essays were a little more difficult in my opinion, but not impossible.
HE'S SO HOT!
Very good professor, keeps you interested, can be a strict grader, but earn what you deserve.
Awesome teacher- his class was always kept interesting. He is a funny guy and he is really into his subject. Tests arent bad, just take good notes.
Great Teacher - He knows his subjects and is a Funny Guy. I had him @ 8am and he got me awake. Picks on kids in class - tests are very hard - not b/c of material - but b/c of how he grades. you think you did well but end up w/ a 70. Not the easy class you would think for a 101 class.
He's one of the best professor's here. I learned alot in his class even though you must study alot for his tests. I highly recommend him for history. he's an expert in his field
Great Teacher. He really knows his stuff. He likes to make jokes during class and always keeps us entertained. I defintetly recommend him.
Great professor, really knows his material. Lectures are always entertaining and helpful. Tests are extremely hard. The material is not hard to understand but the way he grades is the cause of most low scores. You should take him but know that getting a good grade is hard to come by.
Awesome teacher. He knows his stuff, and is very entertaining. Grades are three tests and a research paper. Nothing too bad though. His grading is pretty tough, so you have to study well for the tests to get the good grades. I would recommend him, if you are willing to work for the grade.
I loved him..I was told at the beginning of the semester that I should drop cuz it is soo hard but I ended the class with an A. You definately have to study, test aren't ridiculous but they are not easy. He was fascinating!
I enjoyed this class a lot. The tests are so hard becuase there is such an abundance of material...other than that he's entertaining and very sexy. If you ever wanted to have an affair with a professor....this is the guy.
we had 3 tests and a term paper which made up our entire grade. he's really interesting in class but the tests will kick your butt. don't spend too long on the term paper, no one really got a good grade. he's funny though
Good teacher, really funny, and goofy, but the tests will kick your ass if you don't know your stuff, you HAVE to study alot
Can we say anal? This guy is a good teacher and the test isnt impossible but he doesnt clue you in to how much information he wants in his answers. Basically sit down and memorize all your notes and write everything you know or your screwed!
Too funny and he doesn't even know it. He and Fonvielle are like Laurel and Hardy
ditto to what everyone says. He's very interesting in class, but the tests are pretty tough. I made a nice grade, but I studied my ass off. He's pretty fair, but also fairly anal.
energetic, interesting and happy. doesn't like for people to come in late; that really pisses him off... your only chances of getting off easy if you're tardy is if you're female, but other than that he's a nice guy. tests are pretty hard but he drops your lowest grade. he also goes really fast when you're taking notes and note-taking is all you do
don't be fooled by the nice ratings. this class will kick your ass. write lots of notes and study your brains out to pass.

I love this guy! He has such an awesome sense of humor and he holds the classes interest really well. I must say though, that his tests are really hard and studying is imparative for a good grade in his class. But I highly recommend him for history.
HE is toooo funny, You will have to have a good sense of humor to take his class. The classes aren't that hard just a lot of reading and he calls on you random, but he is really sweet and will be happy to help you in anyway he can. However, he does bring this really ugly rat to class sometimes...
I also got an F because I missed too many days but unlike other professors, he gave me another chance. He is very UNDERSTANDING. Learning History can be very boring and plain with nothing but dates and information to copy down, but he will make the class INTERESTING and he has a GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR.
good teacher hard as can be on tests, nice guy tho
Great Teacher. Makes history class fun. Really knows what he is talking about. He teaches every class without a guide and gets every date and name right. Tests are a bit difficult, but you get a drop grade. Also you will have to take a bit of notes every class. I would take another one of his classes in a heartbeat.
Such a cool guy! Really funny, I loved being in his class, he really knows a lot a/b the subject. The tests were pretty tough, but for me it worked best if you did notecards and then put them in the order that they happened; or to put your notes into diff sections and study that way.
I've had Dr. Usilton for several regular classes and liked him so much I took an independent study with him. He was incredibly helpful and provided alot of guidance with regards to my 25 page paper. Was always willing to spend time to further help me improve my paper and my knowledge in general. Very nice, funny, and organized.
Dr. Usilton lectures really well, keeps me interested in class and cracks jokes all the time. Hes a really nice guy but his tests are sortta hard. But he gives you a break on your grade if he sees that you came to class and payed attention. History is really boring but if you want to spice things up take his class.
so much needless info!
Great professor. Also funny.
this dude is terrible!
Very interesting lecturer. He is obviously passionate about his field.
Great lecturer, but his tests are impossible. Unless you are studying his answer key, you're not going to make a decent grade on any of the tests. I would not recommend taking a course of his unless you are a history major. The class is not worth the stress.
My hand hurts from writing. like a 300 level course, do not take this guy if you are not a history major, way too demanding. If you are a history major, good teacher. know his stuff.
Really good lecturer, knows his stuff. Tests are impossible though. Take super good notes while he lectures and make sure you know everything on his study guides and you might do ok. Funny and nice guy, but don't take class unless you really like history. Huge annotated bibliography at end of class.
Great lecturer and really knows his stuff. But he can be a bit of a dick though. Also, his jokes are pretty bad, like Bob Saget on “Funniest Home Videos” bad. Don’t take this class unless you have a clear interest in history. And if you do take him, take good notes and study them very frequently.
Really great lecturer that gives good notes and is very nice to talk to. However, he is an extremely difficult grader, and you really don't expect it at all due to his attitude. I would advise against him simply because of his difficulty.
very tough class, he tests off of his lectures, and only took 3 grades. The first test covered all of mankinds history up to about when jesus was born. Interesting mateial, but still a very tuff class.
good professor. would take another class from him again.
his tests are impossible
seems very nice, good teacher...however his tests are impossible. essay questions only...never can give him enough information, even when you have nothing else to give. hard to speak with about class also. VERY hard grader. take a different professor if you just need this course as a mandatory curriculum class.
Great teacher! Really knows his stuff! Makes it interesting and fun! I really learned alot in this class, everyone should take him.
Pardon my french, but, this class will kick your ass! You will find yourself spending 33-55 percent of your time studying for his class all to make a lousy c- on them. Is an extremly hard grader. What's worse is, he won't tell you when the tests are! All essay questions, can never give him enough information! Immpossible! Avoid at all costs!
he likes girls with enhanced "features" a little too much. His lectures are the exact same year after year. he memorizes them to the word and to the corny jokes. a great teacher and a great class to take for history. no books to read which is wonderful. If you like taking notes, take Usilton.
Really nice guy. Great for teaching history because he isn't boring. He is very knowledgeable and his tests are a little hard but you never have any homework. He is a really good teacher.
great teacher, really knows what he is talking about. he gives a lot of notes, but everything on his tests come from his notes. if you study your notes you will do fine. he also gives a study guide, though his tests are a little harder. only one paper the whole time, and he lets you drop your lowest grade, either on a test or the paper.
Tests are graded extremely hard and he does not explain what he wants on the tests fully.
One of the worst professors ever. Talks about braveheart all semester. Favors the athletes and women in his class (show the goods in his class and you'll get an A ladies). Makes crude jokes, and his lectures are terrible, and vague. Gives one of the worst study guides. Very nonchalant in class, but grades exams and papers with heavy hand.
Usilton's class starts with note taking, and it doesnt stop until the end of class. Be sure to take very good notes on the terms he posts at the beginning og class. There are three tests, including the final. There is also a paper due about halfway through the course. The tests are just terms and one or two essays, but he is EXTREMELY SPECIFIC!!
An interesting and funny lecturer, overall very kind to students, provided they do not disrupt his lectures. A brilliant man, he has memorized his lectures, and has learned to effectively supplement them with multimedia and internet. His tests are very hard and specific, which is bad for those weak in history. History lovers should take him though.
LOVE LOVE LOVE him. amazing lectures, awesome way of linkin his own personal adventures into the class and what were learning. i thought the tests were easy. i never studied, and got an A on every single one, even after being extremely hungover. def. recommend!
Most Awesome Prof. Ever- Changed my major to history because of his great lectures and stories of history!
For an entry level FRESHMEN history course, he is rather lousy. At first, you'll find his lectures to be fun and engaging (with all of his unnecessary sexual references - ugh), but you'll find that his lectures do not prepare you for the EXTREMELY DIFFICULT tests. When he grades your essays, he'll leave smartass comments.
He seems to understand his subject matter, but when it comes to actually committing himself toward the progress of the students, it seems he is less interested in teaching and more interested in getting his point across.
You may enjoy his lectures but they will do you no good on his test. He asks useless questions. He grades his papers entirely on grammar and gives you no credit for how good your actual information is!
I can't believe some of the comments on here. So yes his tests are hard, but he is a brilliant lecturer! Just make sure you take good notes and you will do fine. I never got below a B on any of his tests. His papers I didn't do so well on, but he's a great guy and amazing lecturer. Take him if you are a history person or even if you aren't. :)
Don't take this class!!!! I'm an A student and have a D- in his class. I studied like crazy for his exam and still almost failed it. He may seem nice, but he grades like it's a graduate class.. Not a 101, freshman level class! PLEASE LISTEN... I DIDN'T LISTEN TO THE COMMENTS BEFORE ME AND I SERIOUSLY REGRET TAKING HIM!! DON'T TAKE HIM!!!
I listened to this site and took history with this guy....BIG MISTAKE! His test are ridiculous and he expects you to write a 3 page paper,a handful of short essays in a 50 mintue period for test. DO NOT TAKE HIM...way too much work for a 100 level class. Definitely not worth it, take another teacher!!
worst prof i have even met. very unhelpful and rude.
Most of the comments on here seem to be from a bunch of lazy people in freshman-level classes. Usilton expects you to actually work and you MUST do that to succeed. The man knows his material and he fully expects COLLEGE-level work from his students, which means taking some initiative for oneself. Lazy people need to get over themselves!
I took his 100 level history course my junior year as an elective. His test were not easy and required extensive amounts of preparation. He knows his material very well and precise note taking is a must. I work a full time job, married with 4 kids, have to drive 75 miles to school, and still earned an A in his class. To all the babies, grow up!
Makes lectures sound very interesting, but the tests demand great detail. He knows his stuff but teaches the 100 level classes that we are ALL history majors!!!
Very good!
Just awful and I am not a lazy student!
What are these people talking about? Sexual? He's a true gentleman! Rude? He's the NICEST professor at UNCW. Difficult? 100% of the exam material comes straight from his interesting, brief lectures. Papers? Ummmm, yes, because it's a HISTORY class. Dr. U. is the best choice for HST and one of the best at UNCW as a whole.
This professor is awesome! I had him and took great notes from his lectures. I made an A in the class, and he IS helpful if you meet him outside of class. I would highly recommend this class to people. Truly knows what he is talking about and passionate about it.
the tests are impossible!! he grades them in such an absurd way. It doesn't matter how much you write on the essays b/c he looks for certain points and if you lack them its -10 or -15. He is a good teacher but the way he grades is INFURIATING !
WARNING. HST101 not an easy A! 6-8 page paper on a topic so narrow you would not believe, using only PRINT SOURCES!!!!! I got the best grade on the multiple choice on the first of 1 of 3 tests but I left out a few TINY details on my essay, he took off 16 points. He said it's not unusual for 50%+ of the class to fail the first test. DO NOT TAKE!!!
He's incredibly sweet and is always lighthearted and entertaining. He is an EXTREMELY difficult grader. Test essays are almost impossible to do well on and the term paper made me want to gauge my eyes out. Not an easy 101 course.
Dr. Usilton is a great teacher who inspires his students to learn. He knows his history and likes to keep the class light hearted while serious
Worst professor at UNCW. He believes the use of powerpoint is babying students. If you do not have a fetish for greeks and romans or do not have a doctorate in western history DO NOT TAKE. Absurd grading.
Interesting lectures, but very difficult upper level class. Do not expect to get an "A" unless you are up on your writing skills and can regurgitate your notes word for word on a blue book test.
I took Dr. U for HST 101 and granted I?m a history person, but I learned SO much in his class. You get 6 absences which is more than enough, but that?s the one class I enjoy going to. He?s funny and laid back and is extremely smart. Yes, he?s a stickler for his detail but he lets you know that full in advance. Overall I love this class.
While lectures in this class were pretty engaging, even at 8:00 AM, you cannot sit back and take them in. You must takes notes on every word that comes out of his mouth, since the textbook is useless since 90% of his questions come from his powerpoints, which he does not provide you. Very demanding tests.
Very hard, especially if you do not like history. You have to take notes on every word he says, and his tests are so difficult. But!!! If you do all the extra credit, and meet with him on a regular basis, you can pull your grade up. Just try!
He is not an easy teacher, but he is remarkably enthusiastic and easy to understand. I'd never had to really study for a history course before his and didn't do well the first test as a result. I put a little effort into and walked out with a B+. I clamored into one of his classes the next semester. He's great.
This class is not too bad but it is no joke. Going to class is helpful because he will put questions on the test that he has just told you in class during lecture. He really lives the topic he teachers, and is always ready to go. Not a easy A but a fun and interesting one.
Dr. Usilton was not the best professor for history. His tests are hard & he's not the most lenient grader. If you do the reading it helps, but not much. Taking notes in class is a struggle because his powerpoints are only pictures, and you only get to study what you write down. One research paper at the end and it's tough! Would not recommend him.
Dr. Usilton is a tough but fair grader. He is entertaining, especially at 8am, but don't take his class if you're looking for an easy A.
He's a wonderful professor! Really knows what he's talking about and keeps you interested in the subject. He's a tough grader and his tests and papers are very hard, but it's worth it. The people giving him bad reviews for lower level history courses are most likely freshman who didn't expect college to require actual hard work. His class is GREAT.
Horrible teacher. Class was very difficult and hard to pay attention to. DO NOT TAKE HIM
This class is super easy.
Good Class
He allows for several absences but you should go to class if you want to understand. There are three essays and tests as your only grades and he grades pretty harshly. Would recommend if you can take good notes
Great professor, fun class.
I would take the class again if possible!
I'm not a fan of history, but this class was rather interesting! I may take another history class at UNCW:)
I've listened to a few people complain about Usilton, but I took him for an intro class and a seminar. He's wonderful. It's not easy, but history isn't. Put the effort into your work and he'll reward you. Easy as that.
Refused to work with me being in the military which I had to miss class days for. He uses the textbook that he wrote for class and between the textbook and notes there was still subjects on the test he did not mention is his lecture or in the textbook. Would not recommend.
Funny guy with a nonchalant style, which kind of sucks considering his tests are so hard. Make sure you copy down what he says word-for-word, he will dock you for failing to mention even the aspects of a subject which are only tangentially related. I'd advise not taking the class.
Dr. Usilton is one of my favorite professors, he made history fun and interesting (and I'm not a history fan at all). His lectures are interesting and he is very funny. He is a great professor but he is a hard grader and your only grades are 4 test and 1 paper. But the 4th test or 1 of them is optional since he drops the lowest grade at the end.
Dr. Larry Usilton is a great professor. I really enjoyed his lectures and he knows how to keep you entertained. It's a lot of information and sometimes unclear just how specific he wants things to be on tests. He is a hard grader and expects a lot from his students. The only time you need your textbook is for a few questions on the tests.
Dr. Usilton is really funny and I enjoyed his lectures, so I was really surprised that his tests were so difficult. I went to all the reviews and the highest test grade I got was a 75. I think his tests are way too long (we only had 50 minutes for a three section test). If you're a history major, you can probably handle it, but he's way too hard.
Hardest class I have ever taken. I would study for days before an exam. Make 100+ flashcards per exam. I knew all the material that was needed for each exam throughout the year and after he graded it i never received anything above a 75. When I met with him about my grade, he said that it is what to expect with the course. NOT helpful. NOT easy.
Usilton's lectures are great and interesting and makes you interested in history but he is a notoriously tough grader. He gives 3 tests and with each test 60% of that grade is a paper you write. I got everything right on the tests and took my paper to the writing lab but he is such a harsh grader that I never got above a B- because of the paper.
Dr. Usilton's class was never boring--he's hilarious--but reading his textbook was the worst. You NEED the textbook because he gives textbook quizzes and his papers use the documents in his textbook. Tests are hard if you don't at least review your lecture notes, and the assigned papers are 40% of the respective test's grade--so write your papers!
Dr. Usilton is not a bad professor. He's a cool guy and he presents the material clearly enough, however he fails to communicate exactly what he expects out of you on the tests. Most of my class ended up failing as a result of this. I ended up neglecting most of my other classes to study for HST 101 and only skated by with a B.
Umm... not here for the students. Brags that UNCW cannot fire him. And does not care about you so don't ask questions.
This teacher does not give clear reasoning behind his harsh grading and is solely dependent on lectures to pass his course. No homework, just 3 extremely hard tests to determine your final grade.
Dr. Usilton is a GREAT professor. He makes history come alive, and he is very knowledgeable. He does only have four grades. 3 tests and a term paper. He drops the lowest test grade, and he offers TONS of extra credit. You have to take very good notes in his class to do well, but it is very manageable. I would recommend his class to anybody.
Funny and entertaining, made morning lectures not so bad. Although, really tough grader. Only 4 grades for the whole year, all of which were difficult. Tests were hard and papers were graded harshly. A good professor and person, just difficult work!!
Good lectures, but he grades EXTREMELY harsh, only has 6 assign. and offers you 6 absences. This includes tardies (as he locks the door) and leaving early as well. He will not work with mental illnesses, as I am registered with the disability office and he wouldn't work with me being late. Not clear on grading material. Requires you to buy his book
Very enjoyable course. Dr. Usilton will more or less return the same level of respect you show him, so if you're upfront about your issues and genuinely try to pass his class, he'll do his best to help you succeed. If you're the type of student who's often late, skips class, or tries to dip out early, he'll call you out on it.
This class is extremely hard, and his textbook lacks a lot of information. Studying for his class requires A LOT of google. His slide shows lack information, and he doesnt post them on blackboard after class. His text book lacks any valuable information including dates important dates, and factual information. Dont take this class!
Dr. Usilton is a great professor! His tests are incredibly easy if you take good notes in class, I got an A on every single one and I crammed for them all. The paper is a bit difficult and the grading criteria is not clear, however, it isnt a grad ruiner. Dr. Usilton gives you so much extra credit and is very wiling to help during his office hours.
Makes you pay for his book for the class and makes you use it for the papers so you cant skip out of it. Really tough grader and shows no reasons behind his grades almost like it is always something with a paper. worst professor at UNCW hands down
Professor Usilton's lectures are very entertaining, and you can really tell he loves lecturing. However, he does not give you much to be graded on, and what assignments are graded, he provides little to no feedback about how to improve.
Dr. Usilton is trying to beat the student, not teach the student. His tests are ridiculous. They have insignificant details from the lectures that play no part in the greater point of the lecture, he's just trying to play "gotcha!" and it's absurd. On the short answer you can be correct, but he may still take off points.
I would highly recommend this class. His lectures are interesting and entertaining. There are so many extra credit opportunities. As long as you take good notes and study each day, the tests will be easy. He is so genuine and really cares about everyone's success in the class.
The tests for his course are extremely difficult. There will be questions on insignificant details that he just glosses over during the lecture. The slides he presents with do not have the information that you need. He also does not use any kind of website, (blackboard, canvas, etc) so you have no way of catching up on what you miss.
Dr. U is a good lecturer but every word that he says in the lecture could be on the test, so it's very important to take very detailed notes. If you don't listen in class there is no way to pass. Also, if you aren't good at tests this is a hard class to pass. He takes the final grade from 3 tests. So you have to do really well on all the tests.
He keeps his lectures upbeat and interesting, but get ready for the tests. Everyone in the class failed the first test and expects us to finish in under an hour. Very very very tough grader. Expects you to write like a historian. Don't take him for HST 101 unless you absolutely have to. This was the only class I've ever struggled with.
Has very interesting lectures but his tests are insane. He grades very hard and if you don't write a specific way that is suitable for him you will do horrible. Expects you to write like you are an Ancient Historian. Thought this class would be good because he is a nice person but your work will never be good enough for his taste.
Testing and reports are hard to understand exactly what he wants. He is vague in a lot of aspects. Does not specify how to use the particular format, and I have never used this format . Youll probably never get a 100 in his class.
Dr. Usiltons lectures were very enjoyable. However, unless you write like and ancient historian good luck. He doesnt grade due to accuracy of what you put, it has to be exactly like he would write it. You need to be present in all lectures because every word matters. You will never know what he actually wants from you.
I didnt like this class at all. There was way too much material to be covered through lectures and extremely long and vague study guides. There are three tests and one long research paper. He grades really tough.
Very unclear when it comes to tests and papers- 5 grades total all semester make it impossible to bring your grades back up. Grades very tough
Do you want class with an old-school professor? Dr. Usilton did not provide rubrics for essays, just general expectations. The overall grade from 2 exams and 1 major paper. He is quite behind the times as far as technology is concerned. Despite this, I enjoyed the course as an avid historian, but if this description scares you, look elsewhere.
You get 4 assignments, one drop grade and a HUGE berth when it comes to material. Study guides are 7+pages long and you may need to do a short answer, essay , or remember a timeline. STAY AWAY. His lectures are fine, mildly weird sexism is included, free of charge. He's retiring. I recommend staying away from the retiring profs generally. They DGAF
