The easiest teacher i've ever had. He gives lots chances for extra credit and his class has no surprises. You can get an easy A if you take advantage of his extracredit.
A great teacher I would retake anytime!
his tests are very dificult. He seems upbeat at the beginning but then is just irritating. His class is rather dull and not very easy. Wouldn't recomend him for humanities.
Uses complex vocabulary to ball flex by means of his much studious education at the University of Illinois. Very condascending, and at times, he doesn't even realize he's doing it. I'm very displeased with the man, and I'm sorry I ever took the course.
I have never had to drop a course at COD, but I dropped his. I felt that it was extremely hard. I had no prior music experience, so I was lost.
one of the best teachers at cod make flash cards of everthing on the overheards and write quality papers and you will get an A. he is one of the few teachers willing to help you in you college courses. he wants to see you excel.
It is an easy class if you have a base knowledge in music.
one of the best instructors I have had. His extra credit questions make you want to be prepared for class. Not difficult to get an A if you have studied. Loved his smile and easy going style.
What a dullard. My God. Mother always said, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." I will abide and allow silence to follow...
He's an excellent teacher. His class is difficult but he knows his stuff and really wants you to learn.
Gets directly into complicated music terms, and if you have no music experience, you're screwed. Also, never give your opinion even if you're asked. He gets way too emotional over little things. His tests are impossible.
Awesome and engaging teacher. Definitely knows his stuff. Class was always interesting. As long as you do the work there's no reason for you not to get an A. LOVES his class!
I'm going to quote Larry directly here, "I will never teach another honors course again." Check your copy of the quarterly. The man is a liar. Case in point.
Yes, he knows his stuff, too complicated for me, he uses very complex vocabulary, he assigns concerts, of course you have to write a paper, bring the stub, from the concer too. I would not recommend this class.
Was not fair with grading. I wrote a lot of details on my test and he did not count half of it. When u r absent on the test day he doesn't care if u r ok. He will just take a lot of points off your test. I don't want to be mean, but it was boring.
He is very nice! His test are hard make sure you know your music terms very well. He really knows his stuff, and is very excited about it. He is always happy! He is very helpful. He as extra credit everyday, all you have to do is read the pages and answer him AND you points! It can be a hard class.
Dr. Larry Ward is a great instructor! You can easily earn 3 extra credit points a day (if you do the readings). His tests are directly from his notes and listenings, which are very clear. He reviews material before the tests and you have to go to two concerts, one of your choice! Easy A!
I had Dr Ward for 2 different classes and I LOVED the classes. He is very smart and knows his stuff. I have no musical background and still got an A in both classes. You get tons of extra credit if you do the assigned reading. I would highly recommend him to anyone who has an interest in music.
Very organized syllabus. Point system. If you read and do the work you will do fine. Alot of extra credit avail. Need to work for good grade. Ward is a music teacher, and there is WAY too much music taught in Humanities class. He is moody and looks at you like you speak Greek when you ask a question
Dr. Ward does give hard tests, but if you study for them you'll be fine! People only have problems because they don't want to do the work. Dr Ward is interested in his students as people- He gave me excellent references for the school I transferred to when I had no one else to ask. Great professor
Hard but fair...at least he is interesting
I dont understand the negative comments about Dr. Ward. He is the friendliest person, CLearest teacher, and his tests are not hard if you study. the extra credit points he gives also help on the test,if you're a bad test taker like me, that helps. he can be picky about papers, but he is willing to help you to get an A. Excellant teacher.
He was probably one of the most inspiring teachers i had at COD. He is very clear with every explanation and he is very helpful and understanding to any questions you may have. He inspired me to read novels again. Very good teacher! Very good!
This teacher is okay. Nothing special. His test were kinds hard but not too bad. You CAN pass his class. Lots of extra credit given.
I love Prof Ward~ His class was one of my favorite~
He expects a lot from you, and the class is a lot of work. He could have been clearer, he talks fast so you have to write fast as well. Besides that, it was an interesting class.
Terrific pfr. Good natured, jovial, and knowledgeable. Plenty of EC offered. Would take him again. Study the notes and youll be fine.
I didn't really like his class, he was a little borring, and focused on uninteresting points of music. his tests are really hard, you really have to pay attention in class to be able to answer his questions. he does give a lot of extra credit...!! but you have to go to 3 outside concers FYI/
tough professor, but knows his stuff. Not above helping a student with anything but you have to get to him. if you just need the credit for fine arts and are not a music major, try another prof. If you are a music major, go nuts.
Great teacher! Knows his stuff and is very understanding, not a pushover though.
A bad teacher. He is always "craby" because his students are not good enough for him. He is really hard on students for a music class. I would not take him
BAD teacher. He wants lots of work for a hum class and his test is really hard too. Do not take him take other teachers.
He is very hard, and makes you work for your grade. I do think he is fair and lets you know everything you will need to for a test! One thing I like about him is that if you work hard you don't have to take the final at the end! YOu have to get really high grades on all the assignments in order to do this though!
Great professor! Awesome class! I got an A. I never cared for music class but he made it fun!
Dont take him!!! any other theacher but him. His tests are very very hard.
if you're iat COD for easy stuff, skip him. if you actually want to learn, he's fair, helpful, knowledgeable, and interesting. losers with bad attitudes bring him down and make the classes suck. gives lots of extra credit if you just do the reading.
This class will be easy for anyone with any kind of music background. Didn't require much studying to get an 'A.'
Good teacher. He pretty much lays everything out on the table the first day. He follows his syllabus religiously. There are tons of opportunities for ec. so if you know you suck at tests take every opportunity you can and do the reading for ec. I will warn you his tests are very hard but he does a good job of letting you know everything ahead.
Dr. Ward is a nice teacher, but is sometimes ultrasensitive. He gives detailed notes, and his tests are directly from those notes. He gives a lot of extra credit, so there is no excuse for an average student not to get a good grade.

*Honors* Dr. Ward is a jolly guy I dont have any problem with him he is a little picky about tests and will take points off for english and grammer errors and sometimes he can be a little boring but i dont mind his class you do have to go to at least 1 concert and he gives alot of opportunities for extra credit not alot of effort is needed to pass
The worst teacher I've ever had. Very rude. Papers were heavily graded on grammar and not content- for a music class. He is ridiculous.
Fantastic teacher, wish he taught more nomusic classes
Very nice instructor. Tough grader. Very big on proper grammar and organization.
Very nice teacher. If you try and do the extra credit, you'll be fine.
I took this class online. He usually responded to me quickly and was very helpful. There is a fair amount of work involved, but it was not too tough.
Real big on proper grammar even thought you can find some mistakes in the way he writes his assignments. Comes off as a jerk when answering questions about misunderstandings you had while doing assignments. Online class had a lot of work, but it wasnt tough.
hard, but fair. lots of chances extra credit. don't come to class if you want to text or do other work. serious. but available and will help if you are serious.
Prof. is very nice, but strict. Will not move deadlines, and tests can be difficult. Make sure you attend every class! There is benefit to attending every class though because he asks extra credit questions about the previous night's reading at the beginning of each class. Makes for very easy points.
Awful teacher. He makes you feel stupid to ask questions, and just stares at you if something you say is slightly incorrect. Has a short temper, and doesn't use kind tones to talk to students--even if they just have simple clarifying questions!
Prof. Ward himself is in a weird way a jolly a**. though if you show up to class, take notes, write the two assigned papers, and study for about 30 minutes before each of the three exams you should get an easy A.
Mr. Ward is a tough teacher. He knows his stuff very well, but expects a lot out of you. If you show him you are interested and actually care, he'll help you out. He's a little stubborn, but he really cares. He hands out extra credit like politicians hand out shakes.
HE IS THE WORST TEACHER KNOWN TO MANKIND. HE WILL RUIN YOUR GRADE FOR YOU. HE IS EXTREMELY MEAN AND WILL NOT WORK WITH YOU TO GET A GOOD GRADE. DO NOT TAKE HIM. NOT EVEN IF YOUR LIFE IS DEPENDENT ON IT. WORST TEACHER EVER!
Larry Ward, hmm where do i begin? He has a really bad temper, things HAVE to go his way. He is not flexible AT ALL. He is disrespectful and will treat you like you are 16 years old. He will put you down and yell at you even if you aren't doing anything. Exams are horrid & class is so boring that you'll fall asleep.Take it with a diff teacher.
First of all, Mr. Ward is a great professor. Anyone who writes something negative about him obviously has NO brain. He's a fair grader, and he's a very reasonable guy. If you show effort, you'll do well. Plus, I find him very aesthetically pleasing and I can't keep my eyes off his crotch. Take his class!
For an intro class, this professor expects soo much out of you. His lectures are so dry that even Arizona might seem cooler than that. He is extremely rude to his students and intentionally grades your exam essay responses strictly if he doesn't if he doesn't like you. Please take it with a different teacher otherwise GOOD LUCK you'll need it!
I absolutely adore this man. I have never been so thoroughly challenged in my life. He makes sure that you get your money's worth when teaching you. He is a no nonsense kind of teacher but I promise when leaving his class you will have learned something! He is very open with his students, and he cares about their education. Im taking him again!
Dr. Ward is an exceptional professor. His LOVE of music is crystal clear. He expects a lot but he gives a lot in return. If you do the work assigned it is an easy A. He is a lot of fun. I would highly recommend him to anyone.
Dr Ward is extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about music and teaching. His expectations are very reasonable for a freshman level college class.
If you take his class - good luck - you will need it - very boring and it's all about him and what music he likes.
serious but reasonable and very knowledgable. a liberal arts education at community college price. disrespect makes him cranky
Why are all of these people being so harsh? I'm in his honors Music 1104 and he is extremely nice. He is literally always smiling. If you treat him with respect he will treat you with respect in return. I recommend him for sure.
serious but sweet. helpful in person.
Worst teacher I've ever had. DO NOT take him as a professor. I'm a music business major and he literally talks down to everyone. I've always been an A student until this course. Pick any other teacher.
I'm in his Honors Music 1104. He is very difficult to describe. He is nice but can come off as rude or as some people say can "talk down to you" I would not recommend unless you are an amazing student who can take harsh criticism and try your absolute best. Difficult tests. You have to memorize everything to do well. I have an A but still...
I am a great student, but I did find him a very difficult teacher. Homework in the book every night, impossible tests (unless you memorize the power points), and he is very hard to please. He never seems quite satisfied. He is overall nice though and passionate about the subject. Continue to work hard and you can get an A. Attendance is mandatory.
Intro to music with him was a breeze. He is so jolly and happy all the time, really knows his stuff and cares about the subject. The class is not difficult, HE GIVES EXTRA CREDIT POINTS for reading the homeowrk (that isnt mandatory) so take advantage of that! He sets up the class so that you create your own success.
He's is a good teacher, always happy never yells and he has alot to give when it comes to music, extreamly knowledgeable. Lots of extra credit oppertunities. His tests are hard though and He grades like an english teacher so put actual effort into his class if you want to succeed
He's alright. Kind of annoying and teaches you like a high school kid. Tests are easy enough, and the assignments are too. He also gives out a lot of extra credit.
Gives out SO MUCH extra credit. I didn't even have to take the last test because I had so many extra points and got an A. Tests are easy as long as you study and memorize key points. Really opened my eyes to different cultures and I found this class really interesting!
Gives a lot of extra credit!
I hadn't taken a music class since 6th grade and I'm so glad I got him as a professor for music 1100. He knows pretty much everything about music and the way he talks about classical composers it's like he's met them. Strongly recommend this man.
Mr Ward was great. He gives so much extra credit, responds to email, and is clear on expectations. He outlined everything in the syllabus, nothing was a surprise. Do the reading, get extra credit, simple as that. Just a couple of tests, STUDY HARD. i highly recommend this class, i really got my moneys worth, i learned a lot!
Even though I did not rate Mr. Ward very well. He is still a great person. He really enjoys his job, but takes music to seriously. Tough grader when it comes to test so you have to study. He give you the power points for class, but you still MUST show. Gives lots of extra credit, dont wait last minute to do assignments. He hates phones and laptops
He is a really good teacher. You learn a lot in music appreciation 1100. I enjoyed the class. However, it is NOT a blow off class. You shouldn't miss a lecture because you can understand it better when he explains it to you. Lots of extra credit. 3 relatively easy paper projects and he is a tough grader on those. He was also very jolly everyday.
Dr. Ward is serious when it comes to lecturing because this is his passion, but he is normally very cheerful and can laugh with the class. He offers extra credit points at the start of EVERY class about the assigned reading. Lectures can feel long and boring if you aren't interested. He can be a hard grader, so you have to study hard to do well.
I've taken 2 English 2 psychology and 2 history classes at COD, and Dr wards class is by far the hardest class I have taken, it doesn't make sense why he's so hard. For example his quizzes don't have wordbanks and spelling counts, it's not like this is an English course it's a music class , comon now
I had him for music 1100, let me tell you i was in for a far greater class than i thought. i think a musician should actually teach a music class. you might as well go to the bathroom before class because if you go during class he deducts points. He writes his own test which are tough because, spelling counts and you must know pointless things.
It is so important to read for this class as he gives out extra credit based on the reading literally EVERY SINGLE DAY. Some people in class were able to avoid the final completely by getting an A on extra credit alone. Read, read, read. He takes attendance and docks points for tardiness, though, which sucks. Just read and show up.
Want to spend several hours a week reading just to barely get a C? Hardest class ever and it's 100% irrelevant to anything most students want to accomplish. He is very rude and isn't understanding. He wonders why students go to the bathroom or text in class. Well it's because no body cares about his LONG BORING LECTURES Don't take this class please
If you are getting your music major I would definetly recommend him becuase he knows a lot when it comes to music. However, if you are taking it just to take it for a credit towards Gen Eds, then look for a different class. I took him for a Gen Ed credit and I was really bored and hated the class.
the thing about this prof, he expects you to read the text and come to the class. if you do, you can get a ton of extra credit just for knowing the reading. But I didn't come to college to read books and go to class.
Ward is awesome. took him for world music and he was very passionate and everything was straight forward he got my interest. Overs tons of extra credit if your not lazy and read the book.
I had him for Honors Music 1100 and he is one of the most passionate professors I had. His syllabus is straightforward, so nothing is a surprise. He is extremely clear about the guidelines for homework and essays and offers extra credit DAILY from the nightly readings. It's hard to fail, because he sets you up to succeed if you put in the effort.
Has very high expectations. Get ready to read the book cover to cover. Has a quiz at the beginning of each class from the reading, and all the points are added as extra credit towards the next test. Very knowledgeable, although he expects you to know a lot of silly stuff. Textbook is required to pass.
Do not take him., His expectations are way to high. Unless your a music major, do not take him. You've been warned
I would not recommend taking his classes unless your a music major, if then I would still refrain from this *Doctor*. I don't think he understands he is teaching a pre-rec course. He acts like this is for a M.D. He will count you tardy if you leave to use the bathroom. Takes a point off everytime someone walks in late. too much to keep up with.
Why don't music profs understand there classes are supposed to be easy? This guy corrects spelling, expects u to be there, to read book, etc. Ridiculous. I didn't come to college to learn or be held to a high standard.
He has high standards, but gives tons of extra credit just for doing reading. spends time with you, willing to really help. one of most dedicated profs on campus. don't take if you want to skate.
He was super annoying and didn't consider that this class was for people who didn't know anything about music but excepts you to have some knowledge in music. He gave a ton of homework and was rude during the sight singing quizzes. I'm glad he is retired after the 2016 fall semester.
