Said Alright and OK over 200 times in a hour. Seriously....why?
Once you get used to his accent he is easy to understand, and he writes everything out on the board clearly
if you are up for learning a new language along with understand sthatistics you know with all the thigamas ahk VERY hard to understand but if you can get ahold of study files you'll do alright
so perhaps it may be a challenge to understand him, however, he will repeat himself in order for his students to understand what he is saying. do the homework, read the book, look over quizzes, ask questions, and you will likely get an A.
If you can get past his accent hes a great teacher. Ive learned a lot from him.
He uses the exact same quizzes from previous semesters. if you take him, get the past quizzes and tests, and you are guarenteed to pass. definitely says ok and alright too much, but after you understand him, it isn't so bad
Its not too hard to get past his accent if you just listen to him. Get ahold of the old files and take notes in class...you'll get an A, easy! very good course
This class was very easy, but I couldn't understand him. It was hard for me to motivate myself to go to this class at all. But as others have said, find the tests and quizzes you can pass. I never went to class and got a good grade still.
you cant understand half of what he's saying
Speaks REAL bad english..says ok a lot..you have to stay caught up or you will get behind and get lost.
After awhile he's easy to understand. Very helpful once you understand. Easy to get a B, hard to get the A.
He's a really nice guy and is very helpful. His tests are pretty easy and so are his quizzes as long as you do the work. Is can be difficult to understand him in the beginning, but it gets easier as the course progresses.
He's a nice guy overall. He likes to joke a lot, but he's really not that funny. But it's a super easy class!!
A great teacher. Take him.
The material is difficult, but you can't get a better professor to explain it. He does not grade homework. If you can get by his accent, he is a very good teacher and his tests directly deal with material he covered. My favorite math professor.
he is difficult to understand in the beginning, but once you get used to him it'll all fall into place. he is an easy grader and exams are fair. quiz every friday you don't have a test.
If you are taking stats, take it with him. He teaches what you need to know and quizes and tests are extremely easy. The homework is not graded. Everyone I tutored had other professors and learned nothing. Larry is not scary!!!
tests are okay. generally not too many surprises. DO THE HOMEWORK! he sometimes is unclear and needs to slow down. once you get past his accent, you can understand him. not the best, not the worst.
He such a nice guy. It will take a little bit to get used to his accent, but it is well worth it. The tests and quizes are very straight forward. A great guy to take math with! I highly suggest you take his course.
I dropped this class. I could not understand him for ANYTHING and I tired teaching myself but the material was too hard. I wouldnt recomend it, but... its seems like others would...
I hated this class. I droped it because I couldn't understand his accent. He didn't offer me any help out of class and was usually tardy 4 the class. His tests and quizes were completely irelevant to the material he was teaching us. My advisor told me to take this at a community college if you can!
not very clear. average in the class is about a C. hes difficult to understand too. not the worst in the department however
Hate this class! Yelled at us before a quiz because we couldn't understand him. If you don't grasp him the first time very difficult to catch up. Time goes so slow in that class. Terrible to try and understand. Past quiz 1 problem was what we had covered, everything else just appeared.
This class is rather easy, however you have to get past the accent. At first it was tricky, but after awhile you get used to it. I never knew how to take him, one minute he was helpful, the next he acted like you cheated somehow. Overall, not a bad class.
A lot of people have been giving him negative feedback, but he is a good guy. Ok, so sometimes it is true that you might not be able to understand him. The homework problems are much harder than the tests. The tests and quizes are so damn easy. This comeing from a person who hates math.
He can be difficult to understand, but he tries to convey the message. More indpt. work. Average is a high C probably. Not the best, but by far not the worst.
I took him over the summer & the accent seemed overwhelming at first, BUT IT WILL GET BETTER! Willing to work through lots of examples. Might SEEM condescending, but really joking - sarcastic sense of humor. If u can't take it, I don't recommend him. Otherwise great teacher!
The class was easy so I didn't always attend class, but the weekly quizzes do a good job of preparing you for the tests, which are not too difficult if you know the basic ideas and formulas. His accent was not hard to understand and he does a good job of explaining the material.
The class itself is not that hard. He can be hard to understand at times and for god's sake don't ask him to many questions he'll get angry and start yelling "can't go backwards must go forwards" if you need help go to office our and he will try and explain it better.
I couldn't understand him or his terrible writing. I got a good grade though because i got a tutor and before every test she taught me everything and I got copies of past quizzes, which he follows. Honestly i never went to class except for test/quiz days because i didn't need him.
He is awful! His accent is horrible! I got sick with a few weeks left in the semester so I went in for help before the final and he wouldn't help me because I hadn't done the homework...how was I supposed to do the homework if I wasn't in class?!?!?! He is a horrible man!
I took this class because I needed the gen ed requirement and it turned out to be harder than the math 115 class. Hes a great guy and he's actually kind of funny, but you cant understand a thing he says. Try and stay clear of this teacher.
I have never been more frustrated about a math class in my life... His accent is very hard to understand and he does not understand your questions in English. It seemed like every question I asked in class was a bother to him. Statistics was an interesting topic, but his class made it frustrating. Avoid this professor at all costs...
His accent is really not bad, you'll just probably have to use the explanations in the book to supplement sometimes. I hate math and he made it *not that bad*. He's one of those teachers that you just have to be really relaxed and non-judgemental about because he's really spazzy, but it's kinda funny if you just sit back and watch!
All word problems and extensive analytical thinking! Larry was motivated to educate us but we could barely understand him. His horrible accent made the surprisingly difficult coursework unbearable at times; lecture Mon./ quizzes Wed./ go over the quiz Fri./ you can skip Mondays if you get tired of the class and KNOW what you are doing
Nice guy who is willing to help if you put the effort in.
Always willing to help...just ask...he WILL make time for you...very nice guy.
Hes very hard to understand. He seems to get made at you when you ask him a question.
This class is really easy. The quiz questions come right out of the book. As long as you go, you'll have no problem getting an A or B. On top of that, the man is hilarious. He laughs at his own jokes because no one else can understand what the hell he's talking about. Very willing to help, and he's buff as hell.
if your expecting an easy Math 101 blow off class do not take this teacher...the average in the class was a 70, impossible to understand his thick accent, i hated this class, and u will too
AVOID--DANGER!!!!! This is a math class from HELL! I already had a complex and he made it worse. he is not understanding. You cannot understand him at all. he wants you to come to his office rather than answering questions in class. He teachs as if he is in a race with someone and gets upset if he has to slow down or repeat himself
he's asian and sometimes very hard to understand
Xue is very hard to understand through his accent. Also, he does not explain things very well, so expect to resort to the textbook a lot if you want to pass. If you ask a question in class, he is demeaning. He can be amusing to watch though, because he gets into excited rants.
Though sometimes hard to understand, Larry takes time to answer all questions asked of him. He's enthusiastic and funny. Do all the assignments, even though he doesn't check them; they're key to understanding the material.
I will never recommend him to anyone.
On an eval sheet for him, I'd put neutral in the recommendation part. He's enthusiastic about the subject, and he is willing to help. When he taught things that weren't in the text, I found myself looking for help on the internet a lot because sometimes the book and lectures just did not click with me.
He's so hard to understand. Take this class with a different professor at Bradley. The class is easier than he makes it
Larry is hard to understand, but you get used to it easily. You have to teach yourself some things in the book because he makes it more confusing than necessary. I thought the material was fairly easy though.
He's nice, and funny cause he laughs at his own jokes. He's patient when it comes to explaining things if you ask him a question. You get used to the accent.
Teacher is hard to understand, but you get used to it. Sadly, you do not get used to the odd mispronounciations which are very distracting as his lectures are also very loud.
do not take this professor. He does not curve the class. He is really strict and assign so many problems that it feels like you aren't learning. Really messy handwriting hard to read. Take quigg instead a much better teacher.
He was kind of hard to understand. I really would'nt reccommend him unless your good at math or already had a statistic class. If you can get someone else, I say go ahead.
I would never recommend taking a class with Larry Xue. It was the hardest class and it was awful with this professor.
I am thoroughly upset with this professor. My whole class tried to ask questions to try to understand the material, but he never really answered the questions. Almost my whole class struggled in the course. He wasn't willing to give formulas on final, even though everyone was struggling. Won't allow quizzes to be made up. Find another professor.
Awful awful awful awful class. Can't speak English, can't teach, doesn't care. Do not take him. Wait. It isn't even worth it
Overall, not a bad professor. He's a bit difficult to understand, but this homework is straight from the book which is later the base of his exams. My only advise (other than doing the homework and showing up to class) is that you DO NOT sit in the front of the class. He has a tendency to get in your face and be really loud, but he isn't mean.
Worst teacher ever. No help. Rude, and not willing to answer questions. Can't understand a word he says. Save yourself and find a new teacher.
Worst teacher I have ever experienced! He can't even speak English and you can hardly understand him! He will not go out of his way to help you if you are not understanding. Do not take him!
I had Larry for Differential Equations. Overall, I thought the exams and quizzes were fair and the class not overly challenging. Yes, he is hard to understand. If you copy what he puts on the board you should have no problem with the homework. He also made it a point to open up the first part of the class to questions questions. Overall, not bad.
Terrible at teaching. Half the problem is you cant understand his english. Kind man, but doesn't try to help you even if you go to his office hours and everything. Take someone else if you can. I got an A in calc 3 and couldnt pass this class because of him.
Awful. Cant understand what he says. His lectures are pointless because he just tells you what to do without doing examples of any problems. Take someone else. If you are stuck with him, DROP
Yes, he's hard to understand but once you're used to it, he's really funny! As long as you can read the board you're fine. He is very helpful and he gives good examples. He doesn't give too much homework, a couple problems everyday which really aren't too bad.
Larry has a somewhat thick accent making it a little difficult to understand what he is saying. if you follow what he writes on the board, it is easier to understand.
Very difficult to understand. Never really interested in helping you, and when you ask questions he acts like the question isn't a very good one. Not very approachable
Larry is a great professor. Don't let these other ratings confuse you. Larry will teach your everything you need to know about math. His accent is almost non existent and he is easy to understand. He will help you and is very approachable
He obviously knows his stuff, but if you ask a question most the time he talks down to you. Quizzes every Friday. Do some of the homework and you will be fine. Pay attention in class and take good notes and you will be fine. Overall it was fine. His accent isn't horrible.
Larry has the thickest accent of any English speaker in the world. He seems like a really nice guy but I could not understand anything he said during lectures. The book he chose was not very helpful either so unless you have a background in math or love the subject make sure you have help from somewhere else.
His accent is very hard to understand but did get clearer. However, even though I could understand his english the class still made no sense. Anytime anyone asks questions he looks at you like you're stupid. No one got better than a 75 on our last test and he still refused to curve it. Maybe it would be doable if you're a math person.
He is really nice and always willing to help.
Always answer students' question.
His accent is very hard to understand at first. It does get a little better, but never was able to fully understand him. He wants you to do well and ask questions, but when you ask a question he gets slightly frustrated and is very hard to understand while he is writing and looking at the board.
He's a great teacher. He may be hard to understand sometimes, but none of the topics are too hard to make it confusing. Just read the book and do the examples and you'll do well on the exams and quizzes. He's a very funny man with good spirit. It's not one of those classes to stress over, unless it's com 103.
I learned more from reading the book than I did from his lectures. That has nothing to do with the accent, which I picked up on pretty quickly, but more to do with how little he discusses the concepts by themselves. Everything is hidden within giant examples he puts on the board which makes it hard to follow the concepts you're trying to learn
I'd be lying if I said it was easy, but overall, he's a great teacher and funny too. There's only 10 quizzes (9 total), 2 exams, and 1 final. The beginning was pretty easy, but then it went bad as I struggled with populations and sample sizes. For the final, he allowed us a cheat sheet (make sure to ask for it). There was difficulty understanding.
hard to understand at first but overall wonderful teacher
Bless Dr. Xue, but he's a bit of a mixed bag. My main criticism is that his coverage of the material for this class wasn't quite as geared towards conceptual understanding as I think it should have been. That being said, I did learn from the class and he is more than willing to help both within and outside of it. ASK QUESTIONS! You will need to.
I had him for Math 111 my sophomore year, he has a very thick accent and is hard to understand. The first few quizes are easy, but the matierial gets harder. Avoid at all costs, I dropped the class because he is a bad teacher and is impossible to understand. Better off taking math at ICC.
He has a very strong accent. I had to drop his class. It started of easy but then it started to get harder. He got mad for asking many questions. And you basically teach yourself.
Larry is a very nice man with a very strong accent. The class starts out easy and then suddenly its rocket science and your professor can't pronounce "zero." I deserve a foreign language credit for this class. If you're a math person you will be fine. Otherwise, kiss your GPA goodbye. But Larry is nice.
Class was based on lessons given and homework. This class is easy if you show up and care to learn. Larry does a good job of explaining and giving notes.
While he is a very nice guy, I would totally not advise this class for two reasons. 1) I am TERRIBLE at math and the material seemed like Rocket Science 2) I could not understand most of the words that he was saying, he has a very strong accent. I dropped out 2 weeks into the class if that says anything.
Larry is super nice, but has a super heavy accent. He also does not teach math well at all. Had to drop out of the class because of my grade. Do not recommend.
He has no online resources, there are only a few tests that determine your entire grade. Stats should not be hard but you have to learn everything on your own, outside of class which made it hard. His lectures are sub par at best and hard to understand or follow. Especially when he uses his 40 year old overhead projector on the whiteboard.
I wish this class came with a warning. It started out easy but then it got confusing. The lectures are hard to follow because he has a very thick accent and his handwriting is messy. You have to teach yourself because he doesn't grade the homework and sometimes he gets upset when you ask questions. Also your entire grade is quizzes and two finals.
His lectures are okay, but most of the work will need to be done outside of class. The majority of the class does not finish, nor pass the exams. He does not believe in curves (except possibly at the end of the semester). One benefit is homework grades as a buffer.
Multiple professors for mth 111. Take any other besides him. The others all give a curve and extra credit, but him. In addition, I was a straight A math student till I had Larry, its not the transition of going to college, its him. If you meet with him outside of class he is upset and seems like he doesnt want to help. Run the other direction.
He has a thick accent which made it difficult to understand him a lot of times but you get used to it.
Worst teacher/professor I ever had. I can't understand him or read his handwriting. I was a math student until I had him. Worst math teacher I ever had. Homework has nothing to do with the class.
Prof. Larry is interesting, some of these reviews aren't accurate in my recent experience with him. Personally, I hate math, always have, always will. However, Larry wanted to help and he loves to see his students succeed. He is so enthusiastic about math. Once you're doing poorly there isn't much of an option for redemption though.
Hard to understand.
Heres a tip if you have Xue go see a tutoring at least once week and have them explain how to do things. Xue lectures are not helpful. Not enough practice to get content down. Have the hw answers are not in textbook( odds only) Their are three exam and ten quiz make sure you know what your doing. I got an D on first exam it follows you.
He has a thick accent but once you get past that it's okay. Since we were online we had minimal chance to ask questions if we had any. We also had weekly quizzes which were a pain. Half of the quiz was homework which would be fine if we were given help or answers to the homework to know if we did it correctly.
He chose to deliver the class asynchronously, which worked well for me, not a hard class. I can't speak to his ability to help students since I never sought help and never spoke to him, but he was always available during normal class time and during office hours. He talks a little slowly, which makes it easy to watch the lectures at a higher speed.
Online, he sent us videos that somewhat helped, but I eventually just used them for the notes and skipped his explanation. He wasnt that hard to understand (about 1 word per minute was hard to make out), but his notes were better for me because it felt like he droned on about unimportant stuff. He wasnt very interesting but seemed nice
I felt like this class was more difficult that bio stats. I couldnt understand him at all so I just did the practice problems. I did what I needed to in order to pass. Only graded by quizzes and exams. The good part is half the quizzes are answers from the practice problems.
I have always hated math, and he made it so much worse. You can't understand what he is saying and has very sloppy handwriting. Wish I would have gotten another professor
Prof Larry is the worst Math teacher I have had ever. He doesn't teach other than writing words on the board that have nothing to do with math. He is funny, but highly don't recommend unless you want to fail.
I had Larry in person, while most other reviewers did not. Apparently, this makes a big difference! He is very willing to answer questions you have, and the content is not difficult. He dropped our two lowest quiz grades as well as the lowest homework assignments to help our grades. As long as you show up and ask questions, you will be just fine.
He is not willing to help if you are struggling. He wants questions to be asked but if he misunderstands what you ask or finds it to be stupid, he will yell at you. He wants participation but if you say an incorrect answer, he will yell at you as well. He is very excited and interested in teaching stats but has no interest in teaching you.
He doesn't talk about stats only orange juice and American women and their heights. His handwriting looks like a 4-year-old was writing. If you as a question in class about a quiz he will say in front of everyone " I remember you getting this wrong"
I stressed about his class A LOT. He is quite hard to understand at times, but he is willing to help if you do not understand. Larry has a great sense of humor which I think made the course tolerable. Make sure you do the HW he assigns in the book bc most times it is on the quiz. His lectures are all over the place...so pay attention.
Larry is very good
Worst professor ever. Lectures are impossible to understand. Grading is ridiculous the final was 30 questions, 200 points. Rude to students who ask questions. Handwriting is worse than a 5-year-old. Only talks about the height of women and orange juice both of which have no relevance to statistics. No amount of prayers will help you in this class
cannot read his handwriting to save my life. makes terrible jokes and then laughs at himself while the class sits there awkwardly. will not give any extra credit when you ask. (his exact words to me were "this isn't high school. this is college." when I asked for extra credit after getting a 36 on his first test).
If you take Larry, then the class will be more challenging than if you were to take a different professor. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it is up to you if you are into that. Lectures are very proof heavy, even though the problems we do are only applications of the things he is proving. If you are a math major, you may like his class.
Larry does a pretty good job at conveying course material. Don't trouble yourself with the long and drawn-out proofs that you don't need to know, but rather pay attention to the main points that he is covering. That being said, definitely be prepared to put some good work into figuring out and practicing concepts.
This class is a breeze. Professor Larry makes it super accessible and the homework is easy if you study and pay attention. People struggle to understand his accent sometimes, but he's a great teacher. Easy A
The only reason I knew what I was doing in this class was because I took an elementary statistics in high school, so this was a review for me. I can't imagine not having any knowledge of stats before this class and having to take him. His explanations were not helpful and made concepts more difficult than needed to be. I taught myself everything.
Professor Larry's class is a mixed bag. While he can be difficult to understand at times, he's willing to help if you engage with the material. Utilizing resources like the textbook, study sessions, and Unstuckstudy can make a big difference. Stay on top of the homework, and you'll do just fine.
This class was very easy. You get one assignment due per week and the course is mainly graded by tests. He can be a bit hard to understand in the beginning but it you actually pay attention you will understand 95% of everything he says.
Larry probably has one of the thickest accents you've ever heard, this is coupled with being extremely loud in class, and having unreadable hand writing. I wouldn't ask a question in his class simply because he turns it into a grill session. His course is also made up of only a few hundred points with no curve or extra credit.
I took a previous stats class which helped a ton, especially when he is hard to understand. If you are struggling, he is very ready to help. I would say the homework was mostly harder than the actually quizzes/exams which was nice. Make sure you look and remember the quiz/tests dates because he won't remind/tell you.
