It was a nice sunny day our first class, and the minute I saw her I knew why
Powerpoint clicks me into unconciousness
She is the defenition of Cougar
not possible to use any more powerpoint slides, doesnt care about students at al
She's so intelligent and gives very clear explanations.
She's a great teacher. Hard exams, but she's very smart and knows her stuff!
Excellent Professor. Gave out candy, but made impossible exams
Very smart, nice legs :) Candy is good, powerpoint is not...
Thinks she knows it all. Knows nothing other than 111/121 Memorizes the slides
very clear, ppt helpful, but way too cocky
Exams = brutal!
if you like to memorize old tax rates, this is the course for you. useless.
She's a heavy information prof. Learn your class notes !
very good teacher
Very sexy prof. it's always fun to go to her class, the exams are fair,
Her powerpoint lectures are tedious...click,click,click but a great looker
Shes hot
Learned more in the labs, doesn't get to the point
yummy yummy!
average prof, a little too aggressive, lots of info, goes a bit too fast
if she's up here, who's running hell??
Good from afar, far from good :(
She's kept herself in shape, but she throws candy like a girl :)
I like powerpoint, but don't fall asleep or u get poked... the labs are good
EVIL EVIL WOMAN!!!!!
SEXY!

Best prof of 1st yr...intelligent, interesting and fun :) Gets to the point!
A little arrogant but very intelligent; does not take crap from anyone
Good from far. FAR from good. Only went to class 4 times.
Can't explain crap!
Thinks shes all that. not very helpful. Dresses short skirts.
good from far, but really far from good. Very over rated teacher, expected so much more....Jim is a helluva lot better
Not as good as Jimmy.
Hot, and good. Not nearly as good as Jimmy McCutcheon but way better than most, especially the guy in GS100.
great legs ... amazing legs
Jim is so much better than Laura. He should teach both semesters of the honours program. Laura would be lost if it weren't for her stupid power point slides.
Very Condesending when addressing students. Laura...if u can hear me...you gotta work on that...it's very demeaning. Gave out candy for correct answers...ummm grade 2 class?

Went into extensive detail and elborated on interesting information, which was found to be very intriguing, helpful, and informative.

She sucked!
very nice legs. very easy on the eyes. nice ass. good teacher.
A business teacher that doesn't put you to sleep
good but a little quick

Actually, I meant that comment, the dude I was talking about was just embarassed and had to try to fix it, ha! I was pretty gone though, he's right about that...I LOVE YOU LAURA!
Doesn't let you sleep in class. Woke me up twice. Even on the first class of the year.
Her powerpoints slides are helpful so you don't have to write down everything she says. She doesn't really stimulate your interest in business, but 111 sucks anyway. Her multiple choice and short answer are easy, but watch out for problems.
Very easy to understand...her powerpoint slides are helpful but you still have to be able to add your own notes which is good b/c it teaches you to pick out the important stuff that she is saying!
great teacher!
Great teacher.
laura allen can't teach for shyt... her ppt. presentations jus make me fall asleep personally.. and she gets all in your face when you do fall asleep... jiM is a much better professor than she is....
i hate laura allan... her lectures are so boring.. the key point from last class are so useless... her powerpoint notes are the worst!!!
She is very arrogant and disrespectful of her students. She doesn't really care about them.
Laura is a bad prof! She doesn't care about her students, her notes don't make sense and she dresses like it's 1987. Worst Prof in the SBE by far.
She knows her stuff and is very clear but she can be pretty intimidating. She's not that friendly and is really arrogant about the BBA program. Wake-up BBA students are NOT perfect!
I think Laura rocks as an intro prof. The course is really easy to do well in if you put effort. The classes are pretty interesting as well. I've never had a problem with her.
horrid prof. Not helpful. watch out for the final exam.
Laura thinks she's all that, she thinks she knows it all and she thinks she can teach. If only she knew that she couldn't even explain why 1+1=2.
Really good prof
She is absolutely AWESOME. But she makes you work for your marks. Challenging and engaging. I loved her class!
Quite intimidating but very intelligent, this course is pretty difficult and she doesn't really simplify it very well, but she's still awesome at what she does
What ever you do. DOn't fall asleep in her class. Trust me on this one.
I was a TA working with Laura, and she truly is an amazing professor. The care she provides her students is amazing, and she is truly a motivating and wonderful educator. Great work Laura :)
Thinks that she is all that, simply because she is a woman in business. If she was such hot stuff, why would she not have her own multi-million dollar business. Get your nose out of the air!
One word...awful.
Ever get the feeling that you are much smarter than your prof? Well...you've probably had Laura Allan.
Great lecturer! expects a lot from students, but rightly so. Definately an asset to Laurier.
man i missed 1st year.........
Very helpful and clear. Wants students to succeed. Can be serious, but usually quite friendly and approachable. Gives you candy for answering questions correctly.
She genuinely cared about the students and was easy to understand and follow. One of the few classes I liked attending.
Arrogant and awful.
Dont be fooled. She doesnt give a damn about you. Terrible lecturer. Going from Jim to Laura is a tough pill to swollow.
She's great!
Very cheery, A great teacher

Hottest **** in the University. But seriously, her strictness wrt sleeping in class is necessary, and she does give out candy if you answer the questions. Keeps her class on schedule. Loved her, but her stress on the CDN Business articles screwed me over.
very nice, but terrible lecturer. just terrible. powerpoints are useless to students, they are just to keep her on track. you MUST take notes on every little thing she says, dont even look at the powerpoint. not even the most important things will be on that, you gotta wirte every thing she says.
Her teaching style does not compare to Jim's. For starters, the power point slides are useless and it only ends up helping her and not the students. Basically, she posts power point slides that are useless and adds a lot of stuff to them in class. She speaks too quickly.
I must agree that she tries really hard do the best for her students. Although her lectures could improve, the efforts and time she spend is amazing.
Great teacher if you make an effort. You can't just slide by in her class.
Awesome teacher, everyone who is complaining about her slides obviously didn't go to class because they are just a guideline for what is covered. Learned more useful things in her class than I did for 2 years in University.
If you don't have a laptop, you are at a severe disadvantage in the class since you have to fill in the power points (not so easy on paper) as she talks and talks. Luckily Jim's GOOD notes are accessible on WebCT too, I highly recommend using those as part of your studying. Just can't match Jim.

she's hot
What are we in kindergarten? Who hands out candy in class, If I don't want to talk candy isn't going to make me. She yells at you when you fall asleep, her movies are 20 years old and her powerpoints are useless! Not impressed, Jim was better

I think Dr. Allan is a great teacher. She is very well spoken, and is concise with her wording. You do have to pay attention in class to get all the info down on your printed slides but she makes it interresting and its hard not to listen to all she is saying. She is also definetly a ****. The only criticism I have is she speaks to fast.
She's tough but fair
hands out candy in class to get ppls attention. She will stop & bring attention to u if u fall asleep AND YOU HAVE TO ATTEND HER CLASS TO GET NOTES or find someone who went to that class! notes arent always clear cuz nothing is written its all in speech. Attending a different lecture on the same day gives u different notes its never clear!
scared me. don't fall asleep!
Do the readings she assigns.
I have never seen someone talk with their hands so much and I am Italian. By constantly moving her hands it gives the impression that she is making the stuff up or is very nervous.
Very interesting lectures. I manage to stay awake even though it's an 8:30 class. Jus tmake sure to take notes and to stay awake, or she will****you. Which might not be a bad thing.
She Sucks

- she's not hot, she's old - she doesn't explain anything, and everything is "her" style of teaching it, it's not practical or even used in the real business world... for example: BU121 accounting is laura's version of accounting, which is confusing and stupid, not like real accounting
I dont get all the negative comments. She was excellent, lectures were clear and interesting (lots of real life examples). She's very helpful, fair, and I would gladly take a class with her again. One of the best profs I've had so far, since she actually made lectures enjoyable and informative.
Laura Allan was fantastic!!! She explained things in detail went over the stuff from previous lectures at the start of class. She had structured lectures and notes online did a review period before the midterm! She's always willing to help, truly cares about the students and keeps the class interested! One of the best profs at the school!
i hate your class
Made BU121 interesting. So helpful.
She is a really good prof.
Her notes are messy and uninformative.
She is willing to help everyone and puts her students first. She is always on top of things, knows exactly what she's teaching and loves what she does. Couldn't ask for a better first year prof.
Her notes were messed up so were her exams. Frequently, she tests on little details instead of the whole framework. She talks a lot during lectures, not just about the materials but other things unnecessary as well. It was very hard to study for her exams.
I didn't find her very effective. No doubt that she is a nice lady and cares about her students, she just isn't suited for teaching, unclear at times, most of the time I had to read my notes over and over again to get the jist of the material.
dont fall asleep in her class! extremely energetic and well-explained lectures. the exams are tough and require lots of studying (the mid term went bad but i pulled through on the final after seeing what level of studying was needed). oh, and definately a hottie
Overall a good professor, but there's one easier way to sum her up... She's good, but she's no Jim McCutcheon.
Good Professor overall. She has a very articulate voice and is good at explaining things. However, when I went to her for help she told me not to bother taking the BBA program, and instead to sign up for some other arts program, like I wasn't worth it -- not a big fan of the discouragement.
pretty good teacher, but hard to understand sometimes
Laura is a first class B***H!.I think she actually enjoys that label. Not sure why she has such a chip on her shoulder but trust me, Laura is a very angry person and if you by accident are in her way, LOOKOUT! When I think of her the big 'C' word comes to mind. For those in favor, I'm sorry. Laura is a wolf in sheep's clothing..and very vindictive.
Very good.
um, the guy that said "Overall a good professor, but there's one easier way to sum her up... She's good, but she's no Jim McCutcheon." .......amen to that one buddy! Jim = the man!
Agreed. She's no McCutch.
She is a good teacher i guess, but it would really help if she could explain well like Jim:)
Good Professor. Helpful and clear.
Laura was very intimidating and unclear at first, but I then went in and spoke to her in office hours - VERY HELPFUL and NICE! She's so committed to helping you when you come in. DEFINITELY go talk to her if you have problems. Inspiring woman!
Jim was one of the greatest profs I had. Laura Allan? One of the worst. She's arrogant, stubborn, and she is out to get you, especially in her MC questions. Don't goto her class, the txtbk teaches better.
why is she a prof, go sell realestate get the hell out of here... I gotta most hated prof in Laurier besides kheller.... she claims we are the best business school , then why did u go to schulich ? be realistic now
Very good prof.I dont understand at all the negativity.....shes very fun and energetic. I liked her way more then Jim M.
goes ridiculously fast, and the class is brutally boring with her as the prof, really arrogant, not much help
Very helpful and she cares. Her in class clickers are annoying, but they don't really count for marks (she'll bump you up if you do well)...Generally, her lectures are average, its more the course content though. Its very broad and to cover accounting or finance in 2 weeks is difficult causing material to be skimmed sometimes. Its doable though.
Not a good professor! her lecture slides are the WORST i've had this year...they are literally one word bullets. If you miss something she says u are in trouble!
She's mean, arrogant, and has a bad attitude toward students. Worst prof ever!
The worst! She makes you feel stupid when you get a clicker question wrong, and makes for an amazingly boring lecture. Such a letdown after Jimmy.
Good prof overall. Liked her better than Jim because she was more on point and focused on the subject, rarely going off-topic. She move along the material quickly which is good as I tend to begin to fall asleep on slow-moving profs.
Worst prof I have ever had in my life.
laura allen is a great teacher! i got a B in bu111 and in lauras bu121 class i got an A+, has lots of bonus questions on midterms. if you study you'll do great. go to her lectures and take good notes and you will be set
I am a fourth year student. When I took her course I thought she rocked. But when I did real business courses, I found that her material was wrong and at best useless. Her knowledge of anything financial is very very poor. Once you take bu383 and bu393 you will all think so.
I struggled going to class. Her hand motions are incredibly distracting. I feel like she may have had something good to say but I struggled to listen to her because of her useless gestures...I feel like Laura Allan could power a small village with the amount of wind energy created by her hand gestures. Boom Roasted.
I didnt like her much
It's not hard to do well in her class if you study appropriately. However, she acts like she cares ... but she really doesn't. She tells you she will help you, but in the end she doesn't at all.
Arrogant-and I don't understand why because she was a really bad prof.
Jim is soooo much better.
class was pretty easy. as long as you made good notes it was a easy class. she is prety hard about marks, forget to do the peer evals, you get screwed over.
Her exams were almost completely from notes so going to class was vital. She speaks up when she teaches which helps to stay awake along with the clicker questions she does.
If you go to class, listen and take notes you should do fine. She tells you what you need to know to do well
She is a good prof. Midterm and final were not too hard and she gives alot of easy bonuses. Textbook is used only for 10MC Qs on midterm and exam, so dont bother taking notes. Attendance to class is manditory as all questions comes from it. Also write down what she says because her powerpoints will not be enought to do well on midterm or final
you have to work very hard for an average grade.
The course itself isn't hard. I hated her lecturers. Don't expect many Peer eval. bonus marks she doesn't give them. Throughout the year she acts like she cares, its all an act she could careless and doesn't really try to help you out marks wise.
She goes way too fast through lectures, but makes things clear the occasional time. I don't like her negative attitute towards students, as with Jim he gave you a lot of hope after the BU111 midterm even if you failed it. P.S. She makes you feel so stupid when you get her clicker questions wrong even though there were some relatively hard questions
I needed help for business so I went to her for help. She was so negative towards me that I decided to drop out of Business...that was how traumatized I was.
Laura is pretty knowledgable about the material however expects students just to 'get it' as she whips through lectures. She placed a huge emphasis on arriving to class on time in respect of other classmates and herself however has showed up late to almost EVERY lecture. Often negative towards students. Take the class with Sofy if at all possible.
Laura was an amazing professor. Not many students liked her after having Jim, but I thought she was great! She didn't take her time in lectures to explain things in depth, but thats what the readings were for. Her lectures were very straight forward and to the point with lots of structure.
Pretty good prof, the only annoying this was her MC questions in class... switching up a letter or two would make it wrong. She is good at what she does, however she is up against the great Jim McCutcheon from BU111... that is a hard act to follow.
Great prof, very helpful when it comes to explaining the content covered on the exams. Exams cover a brutal amount of material however.
She's a great prof. Really nice - should always book an appointment to talk if you have issues with late penalties for peer evals or questions about assignments. Quickly clears things up. All she asks for in lectures is common courtesy. Fast-pace but clear lectures. Exams aren't tough - just study. Oh, and guys are absolutely terrified of her! XD
very fair and professional prof. had some problems with late peer evals and after a couple of meetings and a written explanations, I was able to get the penalizations reversed. she's no jim, but a great "by the books" prof that is easy to follow.
Not only does Laura Allan deliver great lectures, she is also very helpful when it comes to adjusting those pesky peer evaluation deductions. Loved her
Avearage proffesor. Good lecture delivery but unapproachable and so arrogant. Not sure why either. Doesn't even have a PhD and her TAs poke fun at her. Not a bad course though.
probably the worst prof i've had. didn't make the material clear at all, had to make own notes to understand. her MC were unfair on the exam. overall, a terrible prof
Horrible exams, I agree. Have to memorize everything from her lectures word-by-word or you will not get close to full marks. And very unapproachable.
Bad prof. Still there only because of tenure. Other profs dont like her/Jim. Upper year profs are way better.
Awful - She doesn't know how to structure her class..she posts incomplete notes, and instead of paying attention during lecture, you're stuck filling in the slides. Her exams are stupidly hard..its pretty much impossible to get full marks on her questions. Doesn't have a PhD, and has no experience in the business world. Not a good professor!
She's pretty unapproachable but overall not a bad teacher. You deifnitely have to work hard in this class to get a decent mark. Paying attention in class is a must, as is taking notes-her ppt slides arent enough to do ok on the exams!
She's very fair teacher imo. The exams were above average in difficulty but doable. If you had any concerns, she would indeed respond to the best of her abilities to make sure you understand. The lectures are necessary like others said. However she is really unapproachable in person - she's always busy with things and the MC on the exam were random
I like her
good first year prof
Great prof, but gets a bad reputation due to the difficulty of the course.
Her exams are awful. The multiple choice questions are a kilometer long and you absolutley have to write a book to get full marks on short answer questions. I agree with other comments that she is unapproachable and full of herself. This does not help since she also doesnt answer student emails. :'(
She went too fast during lectures. It wasn't clear enough and left out a lot of information for students to figure out. The exam was overall fair, but the MC was just too obscure. Even if you read from the textbook, you'd still have a hard time figuring it out. I was relying on this course to boost my mark from BU111, but it didn't go as planned.
worst prof i have ever had. I'm in 3rd year and I still resent her. She actually lies about what is and isn't on her exams. they are unnecessarily difficult, and she thinks she is god's gift to the world. She is a serious let down after Jim and probably a deterrence from doing the Laurier BBA program
Good!
She's awesome! One of the best profs I've ever had. She speaks with clarity and confidence, and her ability to explain topics is unparalleled
She is a awesome prof. She is strict but gets you prepared for business and does a great job.
She has a reputation of being, well, you'll probably know. I feel it is not very justified since after taking the course, I left feeling she was a very good lecturer who provides very clear guidelines on what she expects, especially on examinations. The course should be fairly marked and one can achieve a very good mark with some effort.
Useless professor, basically talks about the most useless stuff for the whole class.
If you are not easily motivated or a big procrastinator, you will love laura allan. She'll bring up deadlines far in the future and get you worried about the difficulty of the course, thus causing you to prepare way ahead. However, for myself, a student who is often on top of things, I found her irritable and would cause me stress for no reason.
She is a very good professor who clearly prepares students to do very well. Pampered first year students should no that if they find her tough wait till you get into upper years and face real tough professors.
If you go to class, pay attention and take notes, it isn't that hard to get a good mark in the course. She gave out lots of opportunities for bonus marks too.
she keeps talking(not teaching!) about useless things during the lectures
She is straight to the point, gives clear, helpful instructions. Best 1st year Business professor, she makes her expectations clear, and gives students many opportunities to see her if help is needed and offers exciting bonus mark opportunities.
She is a good lecturer and has a really clear and loud voice. She's not as bad as some of the other comments. She is a bit more disorganized in terms on the assignments and online access codes, but it ended up being ok. Her exams were a bit easier than the ones in bu111. Her bonus marks were sweet too, as there were multiple occasions to get marks.
Any negative comments about Laura Allan I don't believe. She is the best professor I ever had, she made class interesting FOR ONCE! This course was really easy and she made it so great.
I loved Laura! She was so engaging...I actually enjoyed going to her lectures every week. She made deadlines and expectations very clear, and she offered help herself, as well as giving us other resources. One of my favourite profs!
Best first year business professor, very approachable and actually cares about her students. The content is fairly simple, but she managed to make her lectures interesting and engaging. I actually enjoyed attending classes (unlike BU111), took good notes throughout her lectures and I did very well in the course.
She acts like she is very approachable but when you actually go to ask her for help. She's a complete different person. I resent her...a lot.
Not an easy course, but listen well in class and take notes and it should be easy!
Laura is my favourite prof! Her lectures are amazing and are very easy to understand. She is very clear about what is on the midterms and final.
SHE IS AMAING, anyone who is rude about Laura was not paying attention. Best professor I had in first year without a doubt, she is CRYSTAL CLEAR and absolutely engaging.
Always has your best interest in mind, whether it's making sure you understand the material or relaying deadlines and project assignments ahead of time with constant reminders. Great prof!
Great prof, however her lectures contain a lot of information so you must attend every lecture
Laura is a great teacher, engaging, and always VERY clear at what she wants you to get out of each lecture.
She is really good at involving the class in discussions, but is a sometimes stuck up. She let the class know what was required on the midterm and final, but she needs to step off her high horse!!!!!
Allan was one of my favourite professors because she knew how to engage the class, and was able to easily and informally interact with students. I was in the Non-BBA lectures, so I didn't have much knowledge of business and the material was quite new to me, but Allan made difficult and intricate concepts east to understand. I really enjoyed it.
Tells you to "read the book" doesn't really explain many key concepts.
Very impartial towards her, she is clear and a pretty good teacher but can come across as stuck up from time to time too.
Decent overall. Don't bother going to her directly for help as she will either tell you to read the lab manual or talk to your TA.
She wasn't the most caring prof ever, but she definitely made concepts clear! If you took good notes the course was easy, and she explained things in more depth than other business profs. Almost never used the textbook in this course
Laura Allan was a great professor. She spoke with clarity and enthusiasm, she was very clear about the content on exams. People complained about the exams, but if you go to class and listen you should be okay! She is very helpful answering questions in her office hours, and dependent on the textbook for multiple choice on the exam!No surprises, fair
Laura Allan is a great prof who explains things very clearly and really helps you understand the core concepts. If you want to do well at Laurier you need work hard and go to class. My biggest complaint is that Laura spent too much time lecturing on concepts that were a huge waste of time and really should not have been mentioned at all.
Great professor and was always clear in explanations. Highly recommend - cannot go wrong with her.
really tries hard to help you succeed, not hard on the eyes either
I can't say I liked this class (nor the labs), however Laura is a good prof in that her explanations are very clear! She's sort of intimidating though when you speak to her outside of class.
Business is tough if it's taken as an extra credit. You must take a lot of interest in it. Extra help is there if you need it. A lot of group work. Lecture based course, I opened my text book maybe once or twice. Although I did not enjoy or succeed in the class, I found Laura helpful and willing to help out during office hours as well.
She honestly isn't that good of a teacher. She likes to ramble on about her accomplishments and is rude to students. 1010 would not take.
Great Proff but is really scary.
Her explanations are NOT Clear at all, and the stuffs she presented were not related to the exam at all. At the same time, her PPTs were not fully prepared!
Not helpful at all. Always tells you to read the textbook and not answering questions.
Definitely not the best business prof at Laurier. Often answered questions and explained concepts in the form of questions, thus leaving it to the student to make assumptions. When 80% of the midterm and final are short-answer questions, that just isn't good enough.
She is a great Prof. Nothing to complain. But if you want to do well in EXAM, PLS dun skip lectures. She explains everything on letcure.
Great prof! Its a lecture based course so make sure you go to class. Very clear, easy to follow and engages with students.
Feel is a more utilitarian professor , as a teacher you can , but not a big help for you .
Business isn't the easiest class. Although she would give clear explanations, tests were hard. Make sure you ask for help and know what they are looking for
The course is as expected; Laura tells you what's expected and it's pretty straight-forward from there as long as you show up to lectures, and make an effort in the course. Definitely not an easy A though
make no sense
Really hard course. Has a lot of teamwork.
Awesomeeee
She's very helpful and she wants you to succeed if you ask for help. Make sure you talk to her in her Office Hours, she's extremely dedicated.
I found laura made the course harder than it needed to be. the material was pretty interesting but she bogged it down with all the reading we had to do. My TA sucked, which made me hate this course. Overall easier than bu111 but beware of the readings and group presentations.
Laura is a very good professor, and is very clear and detailed in her lectures about which content to know and understand. DO NOT SKIP CLASS. She also gives out a decent amount of opportunities for extra credit, DO EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. Much like BU111, midterm and final are difficult, and the group project/labs are harder than BU111.
Whole exam was based on her lecture material and not the text, skip and you will fail
Interesting Class but DO NOT EVER SKIP THIS CLASS OR GO LATE. She is actually a good person though and very fair.
Amazing prof who cares for all students, from the captain of the top business clubs to any student struggling to pass. I would have dropped out of business, if it wasn't for her help. If you're struggling, always make sure to maximize the use of office hours before it's too late like before exams. Lectures are engaging and hands on. DO NOT SKIP!!!
Such an amazing an inspiring Prof. She goes at a pace that is not too quick, easy to keep up and stay engaged. Lectures are genuinely interesting and she always finds a way to make the important topics memorable. She doesn't just hand out marks but if you put the time and work in you will ace it.
She is an amazing prof! Laura always helped me out and gave me guidance. She is not a hard teacher or marker, but she is a fair marker. So, if you do your work, you should be okay. However, if you slack and don't go to class, good luck....
Laura knows the content very well and is able to explain it thoroughly so that all students can understand. I would say BU121 is more interesting than BU111, but harder when it comes to the group project (New venture) and exams which are worth more. Put the effort in and you should do fine.
RIP in peace everyone who takes BU121. get ready to either sleep through every class. most interesting thing that happened was the end of class. 10/10 would not recommend this prof, but if you're in BU you have to have her anyways so good luck
She is a really nice prof, but I found it rather hard to grasp the concepts compared to BU111. Also almost all grades are from New Venture, which is group based, so my mark suffered from that
If you can get notes from other people then there is no point to go to class. They are boring and not much value is added. I found the textbook useful to help explain connection not discussed in class, though textbook not needed to get a good mark. You can pass fine without the textbook. TA's in this course are amazing.
I did not love Laura Allan, I thought she could be a little condescending at times. A large portion of your grade was also from group projects which are great if you have a strong group but terrible with a weak group. It also seemed that each TA marked different and averages would be different lab to lab.
You really need to attend Laura's lectures in order to do well on exams. She wants very specific answers so study well. As far as profs go, she gave a review guide for the midterm and final, which was very generous. She is very honest during office hours.
The BU121 course in itself is meant to be a challenge to all students taking it, it is supposed to intentionally take more time than your other courses and have way more assignments, it doesn't help to have a professor like professor Allan who makes it more difficult. Her hard to understand lecture style and last minute exam alterations don't help
So far she's been the worst prof that I've had. She is never specific and will tell you that things are not on the exam even though there were on it.
Terrible professor. intentionally making people fail the course on purpose, making points to make the course harder and doesn't care about student's success.
She is the best prof I have had during my first year. Her lectures are amazing and inspirational. As a person, she is very supportive.
She has no experience in entrepreneurship. She said she has been teaching for almost 30 years! I found her to be rude and condescending. I don't know why she is teaching this course. It is very introductory and not very useful.
Tries to trick students with trick questions and is excessively sassy when answering students' well thought out questions that require guts to ask in front of a class of 200 students.
Laura definitely knows what she's talking about. If you work hard in the course then you can succeed with her, but she does have high expectations. She's not always the most kind professor; however, I learned a lot from her.
She has a very annoying teaching style, thinks she know everything. If that was true I'm sure you'd be at a better place than a first year business teacher at Laurier. She doesn't want her students to do well.
Unorganized, materials are explained poorly.
Brutal professor. The class isn't fair since most of your mark is based off how lucky you get with your new venture group. If you get a terrible group in BU111, your mark will suffer even more in BU121. Content was extremely boring, and mostly common sense. She made exams super hard and vague.
Laura appears as a great teacher on the outside. But after being hypocritical, and a confusing marker; Im not sure what to rate her. Would NOT recommend
Amazing prof. Going to lec is very important if you want to score high. Clear explanations and lots of examples that's really helpful. She prepares an exam review guide which is really helpful since it gives you an idea of the mark breakdown and topics to focus more. Didnt follow the review for midterm(got 67%) but followed it for final(got 83%)
Terrible prof. Never takes time to address student concerns. Want to go to office hours? Forget about it... teaches vague content which is essentially useless.
I won the faculty wide new venture competition in her class. Our group asked for copies of the photos taken with our trophy. After many empty promises to provide these she never did. If you win new venture, don't expect more than the minimum.
why are y'all hating on probably the best prof ever. She is kind, generous, and a leader in her profession. She is a star. Y'all don't know now, but she will make a business leader out of you. Count your blessings!
Lectures are absolutely necessary in this course as half of the Midterm/Final questions are lecture-oriented, and require specific terminology to be correct. A general lack of caring in regards to the success of her students. Turned an easy course into a hard one, very power-trippy. Would not recommend.
Best prof I have had so far. Her lectures are very clear, and she genuinely cares about her students. Grading is tough, as exams contain lots of lecture and textbook material, and the answers have to be very precise and clear. She has very flexible hours, and a great personality. I would definitely take her again :)
The professor is amazing. Tough class overall but she makes it much easier with the way she teaches. She cares lots about her students!
Overall I found the course content decently interesting. Laura is pretty engaging at least for in-person lectures. I found everything easy to expect I got a little confused for the midterm/exams. It's basically just straight memorization those parts.
She is a nice professor but you don't want to get on her bad side. Don't sleep in class, she will call you out. The content is way more interesting than BU111. But your grade will depend heavily on if you got put into a good group in BU111. There's more group work to do in BU121 but it's pretty easy and more creative.
Laura Allan is a fantastic professor who made BU111 lectures interesting. Frankly, she was my favourite professor this semester. However, this course is not easy. If anyone is considering taking BU111 in the future, the midterm and final exams will feel rough so prepare ahead of time. Make sure you memorize/understand to do well. Goodluck :)
Professor Allan was a solid prof for BU111. BU111 is a very tough course, and she took it upon herself to make it less stressful for students. The midterm and final were considerably difficult, so be sure to study the material well in advance and participate a lot in labs. Also, work hard in the group projects.
Laura does not care about her students even though she pretends to. She needs to learn how to structure her course so that children are not being penalized for simply taking it. You are not only working to understand course content but fighting against the disorganization of the course. Please do better. Also stop talking about enactus.
BU121 with Laura has been a mess. Instructions have been horrible; any information is frequently contradicted by other TA's and professors, and nobody really knows what's going on in the class. Deadlines and assignment instructions are frequently changed. Does not show compassion or admit to mistakes either. Overall very disorganized.
BU121 was literally the most confusing course I have ever taken. There is no real content you cover and they mark extremely hard on the tests.
Maybe the worst course and professor ever. Laura if you are reading this please stop talking about enactus, changing assignment requirements 2 hours before they are due, giving the most vague and unclear assignment instructions, and please stop giving us such a short amount of time to write these quizzes that quite frankly are structured horribly.
BU121 with Laura Allen in 2021 is the worst trade deal in the history of trade deals. Everything just sucks. I don't understand how she manages to make common sense and BS difficult. Even the poor IAS don't know what to do and just say "it isn't ideal, but it is what it is".
Honestly one of the best prof I've had ever had and really understanding with different circumstances even a few days before something big. Though the content may be a bit hard and confusing she provides us with the resources to actually do well and explains her lectures really in depth. I also recommend not opting out of the lab manual.
BU121 is the most poorly structured course of all time. I went from getting an 11.4 GPA last semester to barely passing. Ill never complain without reason or be disrespectful/rude, but I am not impressed by Professor Allans handling of the course. Incredibly vague instructions, unjustified mark deductions, and a joke of a time period for quizzes.
Disorganized. Uncaring. Unhelpful. No understanding of what students have been dealing with during covid. Time is ridiculously short for LAs. Would not recommend.
If I could rate this course with a negative score I would. What a complete and utter waste of my time. Not only is the content being taught disorganized, but the instructions are also consistently unclear or changed last minute. There is no doing well in this course regardless of the effort or time you put into it. Worst course ever.
Lectures were pretty engaging, open book LAs instead of midterms were a godsend. The class gives many opportunities to get good grades even with NV taking up 30%. Seeing a lot of people complain about "last-minute changes" and "unclear instructions". The last-minute changes are super minimal and instructions are clearly explained. Super fair class.
Laura Allan provided many opportunities for her students to succeed. She went as far as breaking the midterm into three un-proctored, open-book Learning Assessments, and has also just announced the final exam will now be un-proctored. Many of her students don't realize this is a hard course and it ALWAYS has been! You have to work for a good grade.
Content was engaging, TA's were very well organized, and fun bonus opportunities. However the prof itself was not my cup of tea. I understand you have to work for your grade, but she is so unorganized and is overall not that helpful in general--in my experience. I have never not liked a prof but professor allan made me turn to dislike BU121.
In lectures, Laura doesn't really teach you much. She doesn't care about the students, nor the thing she teaches. She spent a lot of time saying things that save her face and doesn't take responsibility (like post the final exam review guide four days before the exam). Just don't take her classes.
Great professor and super accommodating. At least 3 or 4 times she extended deadlines and she also made tests longer when students complained about timing. Laura is a great professor and anyone who complains 24/7 is just trying to push the blame of their poor marks onto her. Super helpful in office hours, people just don't go and complain instead.
Laura is not a bad prof. You can tell she cares, keep in mind she has basically been put in charge of a weeder class that is meant to be difficult. Workload is insane but it is very possible to do well.
Prof Allan was not a bad prof. While I do dislike many aspects of the transition of BU121 to an online environment, she was accommodating on many fronts including tests and the finals being open book. I think some are losing sight of the fact that this course is meant to weed people out, and that she had to maintain that rigor during covid.
I know a lot of people have been complaining about Laura but overall, I think she was a fair prof. This course is meant to be hard so you do have to work for it (and it's always been that way). The amount of time to write tests was short but they were open book so if you knew your stuff you'd be fine. I didn't go to a single lecture and I did well.
Inaccessible takes at least 3 emails to get a response, terrible organizational skills, the course this year was horrendous with insane expectations. Not enough time to express learning during tests. New venture was a nightmare with crazy expectations every week. Grading criteria get changed the day before stuff is due. Not the right fit for course
Also, Laura will pressure you into buying the textbook, I used the textbook once and gained nothing from it, completely useless.
Decent teacher but really doesn't care about her students. Never answers her emails (and I mean never) and when she does she is very rude in them. She will not sympathize with your concern or issue and doesn't offer very much leniency. In my opinion she would rather see her students do poorly then to do well. Just my opinion.
BU 121 is a difficult course. I think a lot of people blame Laura just because they find the course hard. My biggest advice is to first really listen in lectures. Make good notes and copy down the examples/extra info she gives in class. Second, GO TO OFFICE HOURS! She's a completely different person at office hours. She's so nice and understanding.
Try to pick the best group possible for New Venture, because Laura gave terrible and vague instructions as a way to keep the class averages not too high.
Course depends on who you get as an IA. She was not helpful when there were issues with the IA.. Class average kept low on purpose. Avoid her if possible.
Seriously, 3 weeks to mark a 20% final exam??? Wrote on April 17, still waiting for grade on May 5. Good thing she doesnt work in the real world. So much for the business schools reputation. Wish I had chosen somewhere else. Its PATHETIC.
Laura Allan did not adapt great to the online environment although she did try. Course was very rushed especially with new venture being condensed as well 'learning assessments' failing to test knowledge rather than testing how fast you can speed run questions. Although she was not great class was not hard and exam was very fair. Overall very ok.
Disclaimer: I did get a 12 in the course so this isn't a 'I got a bad mark and coming back for revenge' This is the most disorganized course I have ever experienced. There was a constant change of expectations such as what is to be submitted, when, and rubrics. There was extremely poor communication about those changes. Avoid her at all costs.
The most disorganized teacher I have ever met. We did not receive a grade back until almost the end of the semester. So we had reached around the second last week of the semester and still did not have our grades back from SEPTEMBER!!!! This also did not bother her at all and she couldn't care less about this issue
Didn't get any marks back until the class was over (including the midterm we wrote 2 months ago). So you're pretty much going the whole semester with no feedback unless you personally email her, and even then you might not get anything helpful.
Clearly knows how to teach, but what she makes up for in lectures and engagement, Laura lacks in grading and assessments. She only marked a few assignments a week before the final exam, with the remainder marked late december (after the final). We had little to no feedback on many of our graded assignments and our group projects were disappointing.
I do not understand how she can be teaching here so long. Rude, disorganized, not experienced in the subject matter. Can't the business school find someone competent and experienced? Terrible. Not recommended.
She is the worst professor I've ever had. Half the course is done through "Wavemakers" an online course. Why am I taking a class that is going to be taught by someone else. Content is awful, she isn't accessible and she clearly lacks knowledge about the program. Terrible course and a waste of an elective.
She was a terrible teacher
Laura has no practical experience. Lectures were based on self-help books and first 2 covered content of entire class. Unclear instructions on grading scheme. Returned all of our assignments after finals. I was pretty open about the course, but don't let her public speaking fool you. She knows nothing. Enactus program that she runs is a mess too.
